WINDBOATS ENTERS ADMINISTRATION

NEWS

Ship designer dies New, larger premises Virtual boat show pages 1-13 Windboats Marine Limited, based in North Walsham, Norfolk, has entered administration, in part due to the impact of Brexit and ultimately the Covid-19 pandemic. Administrators Mark Upton and David Scrivener of Ensors Chartered Accountants are actively looking for a buyer for the business that took out a secured term loan facility of £250,000 with Ray Maritime Facilities Ltd in February 2020. “Unfortunately the Covid-19 pandemic and the disruption caused by that, together with a downturn in orders and cash flow difficulties has meant that Windboats Marine Limited has had to enter administration,” said joint administrator Mark Upton. “The company has a well-respected name in the market and builds a fantastic British product with a highly skilled workforce and we are hopeful that we will be able to find a buyer for the business.” The company was established in 1920 and initially built small wooden yachts and larger powerboats. For around 50 years, Windboats ran a hire fleet until the company decided to concentrate on building pleasure and commercial craft.

8 Hardy Marine was acquired by Windboats in 2013

The business diversified into building aluminium boats in 1957 and soon after started using ferro cement construction under the trade name Seacrete. In 1983 GRP production began at Windboats and an association with Oyster Marine was formed resulting in the building of nearly 300 Oyster yachts. In 2013, Windboats acquired Hardy Marine, expanding the range to encompass models from 32 - 62ft and in 2014, a new partnership began with Gunfleet Marine, with Windboats building, marketing and selling the range under licence. In 2018, the company's Wroxham yard was merged into larger premises at North Walsham where the Hardy motorboats are built. The company had previously announced plans to introduce a hybrid option for its Hardy range and the launch of a new model, the Hardy 52DS. The company has been privately owned by the James family for 46 years. The vast majority of the 60 staff are currently furloughed under the government's job retention scheme.

OCEAN FOOTPRINT GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND Ocean Footprint has been awarded a contract to supply millions of face masks to the NHS to help protect health workers from the coronavirus. The company has previously supplied face masks to Italian doctors and has now been awarded the NHS contract from the UK government. “We’ve been supplying masks to many Italian healthcare workers through our current supplier network,” Ocean Footprint MD, Peter Harrison, explained. Our supplier has the capacity to produce more than 80,000 masks a day and we’re building more machinery in order to increase capacity still further.” He added: “It’s a significant contract for Ocean Footprint. The company was set up by myself and naval architect Guy

The company has already donated thousands of masks to health workers and Peter says it’s a really good feeling to be able to use their skills to help out. The masks will be delivered to the UK in batches over the next few weeks.

An excuse not to pay invoices? As we continue the coronavirus lockdown, I’ve been hearing from several suppliers about how the pandemic is being used as a reason not to pay overdue invoices. Suppliers are now being asked to plan and prepare for an increase in operations however several boatbuilders seem to forget that their suppliers have invoices and bills of their own to pay. I’ve heard stories of how some invoices were overdue long before coronavirus hit but how some boatbuilders are now asking their suppliers to be patient in view of the current obvious economic difficulties caused by Covid-19. Some suppliers say their invoices are more than 150 days overdue which in smaller companies is leading to cash-flow issues and claims that the industry is in a holding pattern waiting to take off with some boatbuilders trading above their capabilities. Suppliers however feel that they have no other option but to keep supplying goods in the hope that payment will eventually follow. Obviously a potential problem to any business. One industry person has gone as far as to say that boatbuilders need to be honest with their suppliers when it comes to their orderbook as preparations get underway to ramp up manufacturing levels again. ORDER SHORTFALL I’ve been told that at least one company built up more than £1.5m of debt and had a similar amount of order/budget shortfall after boat numbers fell short of those previously stated. Prior to the pandemic, we heard how boatbuilders had full orderbooks and were claiming great figures for 2019, without any stating the level of debt being built up and the number of loyal suppliers at risk because of a push-out of payment terms. On a positive note, apparently boat sales have still gone ahead during the coronavirus lockdown. With the spring and summer boats shows postponed or cancelled and social distancing on the cards for many months to come, boatbuilders and brokers have had to investigate new ways to sell their craft. Nothing beats seeing a boat in the flesh – being able to touch and feel a craft but virtual boat tours are the next best thing and a great way of getting an initial feel of a boat or product. Ancasta was one of the first in the UK to hold a virtual boat show, an event that was hailed a great success with website traffic and enquiries increasing dramatically. And Fairline has now launched its virtual marina with 360-degree boat experiences and an interactive live chat facility with dealers. With an industry going through significant changes due to the lockdown, those who invest in technology now should benefit in the longer-term. My guess is that people looking for their next boat or piece of equipment will soon get used to relying on seeing it virtually on their computer screens and companies need to adapt now to survive.

Tributes are being paid to Colin Mudie RDI, yacht and tall ships designer, balloonist, author and inclusive-sailing advocate, who died in March aged 93. Contemporary of Edmund Hilary and Donald Campbell, whom he knew, Colin forged his reputation as an adventurer, supporting sailtraining and charities, particularly those dedicated to disabled sailors, whilst designing some of the world's most memorable tall ships. “He will be remembered by the international tall ships family with great fondness and his legacy will be with us for many decades to come,” said Paul Bishop, head of race directorate at Sail Training International. Born in Edinburgh in 1926, Colin studied engineering at Southampton University before serving his design apprenticeship at the British Power Boat Company in

Southampton. After working for designers Laurent Giles and Partners in Lymington, he set up his own firm.

ATLANTIC ADVENTURES Colin successfully completed a 1952 Atlantic crossing in the 19ft Sopranino without radio or engine and in 1958 attempted to cross the Atlantic again, this time in a hydrogen balloon. “After 94 hours the balloon crash landed but dad had designed the gondola as a boat and he took command and they sailed 1,500 miles to Barbardos, arriving two weeks later,” said his son, Max. It was perhaps as a designer of tall ships that Colin was best known. In 1971 he won a Lloyd's Register Award for Royalist, a 23m sailing training brig for the British Sea Cadet Corps and designed a number of other tall ships throughout the 1980s including the 43m barque STS Lord Nelson. Colin's charitable involvements included the RNLI, of which is was a life vice-president and part of his local crew in Lymington. He was also involved in the Jubilee Sailing Trust whose mission is to give everyone, regardless of ability, the chance to enjoy sailing.

Groupe Beneteau is confident it will weather the COVID-19 crisis with a robust financial position and with some plants already up and running. The company has â‚Ź609 million of equity as at end of February and over â‚Ź300 million of credit lines already in place but warns that the financial impact of the pandemic will not reflect in the company's accounts until the second half of the year. First half consolidated revenues for 2019/20 came to â‚Ź519.4 million, up 4.7% year-on-year, thanks to a sustained level of business for both the Boat and Housing divisions.

revenues. On the European markets all segments, with the exception of monohull sailing, show growth. Sales in North and Central America have been affected by a destocking throughout the market with the sales of

American brands continuing to fall. Markets in other regions recorded low levels of activity representing just 8% of first-half revenues. Buoyed by growth in fleet sales for charter firms, the percentage of sailboats is up

3.5 points to 53.5% of Boat division revenues, compared to 46.5% for motorboats. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE The group has restarted production at three sites since 27 April and plans to gradually resume operations at all industrial facilities by midMay. Both divisions have recorded relatively low levels of order cancellations to date and they mainly concern deferrals to next financial year.

CANAL AND RIVER TRUST EXTENDS LICENCES The Canal and River Trust is extending all licences by a month to help boaters affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Licences due to expire at the end of April will be extended to the end of May

and all other current boat licences will have their current expiry dates extended by a month. Additionally, the Trust has also deferred licence fee payments for business boat companies for three months.

“With no hire or trip boats operating during the lockdown, most of these have seen their trading reduced to nothing and all their income collapse, said Trust chief executive Richard Parry.

BRIEFS Rescheduled The new West Country Boat Show, due to take place at MDL's Queen Anne's Battery Marina in Plymouth, has been rescheduled for June 2021. The show had initially been scheduled for June this year, but organisers feel that due to the coronavirus pandemic postponing it to next year is the right approach.

Retained Premier Marinas Falmouth and Gosport marinas have retained their Five Gold Anchors Award. The award is made by The Yacht Harbour Association and indicates the quality of customer service and range of facilities provided at both marinas. Recent investments at both marinas have included a new ticketless car parking system.

Donation Berthon has donated its supply of Molton Brown hand lotion to the critical care unit at Lymington Hospital. He added that the shipyard was alerted after a post on Facebook mentioned the sore hands of the hospital staff.

PLANNING GRANTED FOR SWANWICK MARINA WASHINGTON POST JIM NOLAN runs US based marketing agency James Nolan Associates One way to describe the current state of the US recreational marine market is that it is disjointed. Disjointed in the sense that there is no national unity or harmony of its elements other than the COVID 19 pandemic. While the federal government issues guidelines it is the states that make the rules. A good example is an announcement Brunswick Corporation made on March 20 “that it will suspend production at certain of its propulsion and boat operations over the next few weeks in response to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19).” You can go boating in some states and not in others. Fishing in some states and not in others. Some brokerages and dealerships are open some are not. The consensus is that boating is being hit badly but it will be May or June before the initial impact of COVID 19 on statistics will be known. Among the more immediate impacts is that the NMMA has let go 23 members of its team while introducing a significant temporary reduction in compensation and benefits for its Executive Leadership Team. On a positive note, both the NMMA and MRAA have issued guidelines and resources on how their members can weather this storm including how to participate in the massive federal stimulus program.

Swanwick Marina has been granted planning approval for a new pavilion for boat sales and marine businesses. The approval also includes new food, beverage and facilities building, a new bridgehead entrance structure, additional car parking and trolley storage at the marina. “In these most testing times, this is great news for Swanwick Marina,” said Graham Bristowe, Swanwick Marina general manager. “We know that our tenants and berth holders alike will be happy to see the continued investment on their site.” The new developments follow the completion of Swanwick's new £4m 333 berth floating marina.

INDUSTRY STANDARD With berths available from 6m-40m, all berth holders are now able to benefit from a berth measuring at least the length of their boat. In addition, explained Graham, the fairway and pontoon specifications

exceed industry standards with berths in the centre section set 700mm above water the water - 200mm above standard industry height - to reduce sailing boat customers' deck to pontoon 'jump down' when berthing their vessel.

THEPERSONBEHINDTHEFACE Interview by Alice Driscoll

SEAN ROEBUCK

How I got into this industry... I've been boating for over ten years and while my boat was in the Med I realised that sun and hot decks were an issue. After some investigating I discovered SeaDek but it was only available in the USA. I called them, flew to Florida and three years later we're now fully operational with a full UK manufacturing facility and an exclusive licence from SeaDek.

One thing the industry needs less of is... e-mails. Pick up the phone and speak to one another, things generally happen a lot quicker.. Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... Think outside the box'...what does it even mean? Best place I've been... Alaska in mid-summer, what a fantastic wilderness. I am lucky enough to have been a couple of times and look forward to returning one day.

Best advice I've ever received... Don't be afraid to question anything or anybody, even if you feel that your questions may not be relevant, they quite often are.

Don't worry about... Anything...unless it's going to kill you.

You should really read... First Man: The life of Neil A. Armstrong by James R Hansen. A very interesting and inspirational read.

One thing I couldn't live without... Music such a mood changer on even the most miserable of days.

Favourite meal... Any meat that's smoked or barbecued.

How I cope with stress... Turn off all electronic devices, take an hour away from everything and have a cup of tea. It helps put everything into perspective and remember, the world won't end if it doesn't get done, tomorrow is a brand-new day. Something about you that people might be surprised by... When I was 22, I spent six years in the Royal Air Force as an engineer on air to air refuelling aircraft. I was lucky enough to be posted to the mobile support team and flew all over the world in support of the aircraft. The environment made me take responsibility for my actions...it focuses the mind when you fix an aircraft that you then fly in for eight hours. Sean Roebuck is director of SeaDek

VOLUNTEERS WORK TOGETHER Whale has been responding to an increase in demand for sanitisation products during the coronavirus pandemic. The company manufactures a range of manually operated foot pumps - its Babyfoot range - that are used in portable hand sanitation units. Although production at Whale's facility in Bangor, Northern Ireland, has been suspended, a team has been pulled together to support the demand. “In responding to the increased demand for our Babyfoot pumps, we were keen to take this opportunity to play our part in combatting the spread of COVID-19 around the world,” said Whale MD Patrick Roberts. “Without the dedication of the team here at Whale and our supply chain partners, this would not be possible. I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work and contribution during these challenging times.” One of the main applications for the Babyfoot pump is within portable hand washing stations.

UK boatbuilders are expanding production following a major slow down due to the coronavirus pandemic. And orders are still being received - although not to the same level as previously predicted prior to the pandemic. “We are continuing to sell boats,” said Kiran Haslam, chief marketing officer at Princess Yachts. “We're trying to understand what patterns will emerge as countries release their lock-downs. “We believe many customers will have no faith in commercial travel for a long time and will want to instead head off on their boat.” OPERATIONS REVIEW Pendennis shipyard is hoping to increase its current 40% capacity within the next few weeks having carried out a review of procedures and operations. “We've put in place detailed measures,” said Stephen Hills, Pendennis commercial director. “We carried out back to work inductions with 120 members of staff.” And he said additional safety measures have been implemented such as temperature checks on everyone arriving on site. “At the end of the first week, we had everyone back on the grid to give feedback and have adapted some procedures,” added Stephen. “We've listened to employees concerns. People are scared, it's a frightening time.” ON SCHEDULE Fairline Yachts has continued to build boats throughout the lock-down with five manufactured in both March and April. The company is on schedule to complete an additional five boats in May. “We are still taking enquiries and having discussions with current and potential clients,” said Miles Moorhouse, head of marketing at Fairline.

BOATBUILDERS CONTINUE TO RECEIVE ORDERS

And he explained that the company is using the current period to rethink its route to market. “The industry is going through significant changes, particularly with the loss of boat shows, which has given us time to reflect,” he said. “One-to-one video meetings between our dealers and their clients have become very popular, as has this communication channel between the dealers and us.” VIRTUAL PLATFORM The boatbuilder has launched its Fairline Marina a virtual platform for its yachts, with 360-degree experiences of the boats, live stream tours from its dealers and an interactive live chat facility. “We are embracing the change and will continue to build our calendar of branded interactive digital events and experiences whilst lock-down remains in force,” added Miles. The company is also developing a regular calendar of livestream boat tours to be hosted by dealers.

At Sunseeker, manufacturing has continued on boats that were nearing completion prior to the lock-down. “Clients are keen to take delivery of their new

boat,” said Bryan Jones, marketing manager. “We look forward to returning to normal as soon as possible so we can progress our exciting new model development plans.”

Engineers at Aqueduct Marina have won a tender to work on a new project they believe could help shape the development of the next generation of boat engines. The RIVER project, of which a new boat to be built by Aqueduct Marina for the Canal & River Trust will play a major part, consists of nine partners from five EU states and five associated partners involved in the capture, storage, treatment of CO2 and waterways. The project aims to develop internal combustion engines to virtually eliminate CO2 emissions. The marina has been involved with the Trust for many years building and restoring its workboats and was particularly pleased to win this latest tender. “It is excellent that CRT is involved in this European environmental collaboration and we are naturally delight here at Aqueduct Marina to be building this boat,” said

Robert Parton, Aqueduct MD. “We look forward with interest to seeing how the theory works on the water.” ADAPTED The new workboat will be adapted with a test rig

added that will enable the project's engineers to evaluate the effectiveness of the technology in real-world scenarios. Tests will include recovering exhaust energy that will be combined with

carbon capture technology. The expelled CO2 will be stored as compressed gas in containers. At the end of the project Aqueduct's engineers will remove the central section of the 65ft boat and reduce it to the more usual 55ft. Once reconfigured it will then join the Trust's fleet of maintenance boats. The project is being led by the French research establishment Yncrea Hauts De France based in Lille.

BRUNSWICK RESILIENT DESPITE COVID-19 IMPACT 8 Brunswick reported consolidated net sales of US$965.5m for the first quarter of 2020

Brunswick Corporation has demonstrated resilient operating margins despite the impact of COVID-19, as it reported results for the first quarter of 2020. The Illinois, USheadquartered company reported consolidated net sales of US$965.5m, down from US$1,050.7m in 2019. "The COVID-19 pandemic had a material impact on our results in the quarter, primarily due to lower revenues stemming from the suspension of production at many of our manufacturing facilities, almost all of which resumed production in April," said Brunswick CEO, David Foulkes. "However, our global distribution businesses continued to operate and we were able to offset half of the earnings impact through operating expense control. This enabled us to generate operating margins consistent

with prior year, demonstrating the resiliency of our businesses in an extremely challenged market." The boat segment reported lower sales and earnings against prior year due mostly to the temporary suspension of manufacturing

in most plants towards the end of the quarter. The parts and accessories segment reported lower sales and earnings in the quarter as strong growth at Power Products was offset by lower sales in the other businesses.

The propulsion segment reported a slight sales decrease in the quarter as continued strong demand for higher horsepower outboard engine categories and related controls and systems was offset by weaker sales of lower horsepower outboards and sterndrive engines as anticipated. Brunswick anticipates that the global marine market will be down significantly in the second quarter of 2020 with declines moderating over the second-half of the year.

BUSINESSMATTERS ADAM BERNSTEIN: Freelance Journalist

It's remarkable to think that something as small as a virus has stopped the global economy in its tracks. There are countless issues for businesses, but one that is vexing employers is what to do with staff? In a special feature, Adam Bernstein spoke to Arwen Makin, a senior solicitor at esphr, about the options open to employers. DON'T PANIC It's ever so easy to panic in times of crisis, but employers should keep a calm head about them. And for Arwen, good communication is key: “It is difficult in these unprecedented times to provide reassurance, but employees should be told that the business is following the current government advice.” In particular, she points to a link: https://www.gov.uk/ government/topical-events/ coronavirus-covid-19-ukgovernment-response that should be sent to all employees. PAYING STATUTORY SICK PAY (SSP) In general, Arwen says that SSP is payable if employees are incapacitated due to injury or illness or incapacitated despite being 'capable' of work because of necessary self-isolation. “The 2020 budget,” she adds, “made changes to allow eligible workers to claim SSP from day one of absence; temporarily extended SSP to cover people caring for those within the same household who display coronavirus symptoms and have been told to self-isolate; and also said that businesses with fewer than 250 employees will be reimbursed for any SSP paid to employees in respect of the first 14 days of sickness related to COVID-19.” The detail is at https://www.business

CORONAVIRUS - KEY INFORMATION FOR EMPLOYERS

support.gov.uk/statutorysick-pay-rebate/. The changes were radical, but they still beg the question of whether a business needs to pay statutory sick pay if a worker chooses to self-isolate? For Arwen the answer is clear “a worker who chooses to self-isolate where none of the requirements are met is not entitled to statutory or contractual sick pay.” One solution, she does recommend, is allowing an employee to work from home if the role permits it. “But,” she adds, “employers should consider whether it would be discriminatory to refuse home working, take disciplinary action, or withhold pay in light of the employee's refusal.” And this is more of a problem if a worker has a (disability) health condition that puts them at higher risk of serious illness or death as discrimination claims could follow. But if there is no disability, and the public health advice is such that the employee could reasonably be asked to attend work, then the absence would be unauthorised and disciplinary action could follow. Further, as Arwen notes, “the employee would likely not be entitled to pay.” There is also an elephant in the room - contractual

sick pay. Arwen's advice here is to look at the precise wording of the contract. She says, “it is tempting for employers to regard a nonsymptomatic worker in self-isolation as not 'actually sick' and only pay SSP. However, it is very difficult to argue that a worker is not entitled because they are not symptomatic, in circumstances where SSP regulations 'deem' them to be 'incapacitated'.” SENDING WORKERS HOME But what if an employer sends a worker home against their wishes? Here Arwen thinks the right to pay depends upon the circumstances - “where the employee is able to continue to work from home then they will generally continue to be entitled to their normal rate of pay. If working from home is not possible, and an employee is suspended by their employer on health and safety grounds, it is likely that they will still have the right to continue to receive full pay.” The situation is murkier where an employer suspends due to official public health advice to selfisolate. Here Arwen says that if the employee falls within the category of people who have been advised by government guidance to self-isolate, then they will fall

within the new deemed incapacity rules for SSP. An allied question is whether employers can make employees take holiday to cover absence. On this Arwen notes that “it is possible to require employees to take annual leave at nominated times provided that they are given the required level of notice.” Of course, employees can also take annual leave instead of being on SSP or nil pay. Sight shouldn't be lost of the government's advice for those considered vulnerable - those over 70, women who are pregnant, and those with an underlying health problem. People in this category should either work from home or vary their daily commute to use less public transport. LAYING OFF STAFF The natural reaction when an employer is in trouble is to cut costs and lay off staff. But as Arwen advises, employers should first “check if the contract contains a provision, which allows the employer to temporarily lay people off work or reduce hours.” But before pulling the trigger, it should be noted that the government guaranteeing workers' pay to 80% of £2500 per month per employee. Again, the government has

more detail on the subject which can be read at https://www.business support.gov.uk/coronavirusjob-retention-scheme/. Next Arwen talks of employees with at least one month's service. If they're laid off, they may be entitled to claim a statutory guarantee payment (SGP) on up to five workless days in a three-month period. The current SGP maximum is £29 per day. If workers are laid off for longer, they can claim a redundancy payment from the business if it's for four or more weeks in a row, six or more weeks in a 13-week period, where no more than three weeks are in a row. But if there is no contractual right to lay staff off, Arwenkin says that an employer faces two main choices -“either seek the agreement of the staff to a temporary lay-off or reduced hours; or seek the consent of the employees to change the contract to include a lay-off provision.” Here she says that the negotiation must be handled fairly and will require a consultation process and reasonable notice. She warns, however, that if there is no lay-off provision in the contract, “any lay-off without agreement, would be a fundamental breach of contract, an unlawful deduction of wages and could lead to various employment claims.” IN SUMMARY Coronavirus has put employers and employees in very difficult situations where businesses are placed between a rock and a hard place. The key message, if there is one, is that employers shouldn't act in haste, but with, instead, the benefit of knowledge.

MEETING TARGETS The government expects that by 2025 all new vessels ordered for use in UK waters will be designed with zero emission propulsion capability. Graeme points out that Hybrid Marine's parallel hybrids have met this vision since 2007 and that the company is well ahead of government targets. "Our hybrid systems are very well placed to take advantage of improvements in infrastructure," he said. "As more charging points become available then a larger part of a crafts' operating cycle can be performed from zero carbon resources." By 2035 the government expects the UK to have built clean maritime clusters, combining infrastructure and innovation for the use of zero emission propulsion technologies. It also expects that low or zero emission fuel bunkering options are readily available. Hybrid Marine's propulsion system can operate for extended periods in electric

8 Owatrol's Deco paint does not need a primer or undercoat

The coronavirus lockdown has seen a rise in demand for paint products as more people have time to complete projects on their boats, reports Midland Chandlers. The company sells ranges from International, Craftmaster, Teamac and Owatrol. Whilst International continues to be the most popular product, Midland Chandlers is seeing a surge in orders from Owatrol Rust Inhibitor. “This is the basis of a good paint job and popular among professional painters especially if the project is being completed in adverse conditions such as full sun or wind, where the 'wet edge' is easier to maintain,” explained Ellie Menzies, Penkridge store manager at Midland Chandlers. 8 OEM’s are looking at the cost versus benefit when it comes to onboard power

BOATERS BRING BOATS UP TO STANDARD Jeremy Usher, sales director Solar Technology, is noticing a 'step change' in power requirements onboard. This is being driven by boaters bringing their boats up to a standard that can keep up with the power requirements of gadgets that make every day boating safer, more pleasurable, navigable and allow them to keep in touch with others. Many of the historic problems, Jeremy contends, are located around lead acid batteries being big, heavy, slow to charge and having a short life span. “We see a conventional lead acid battery achieving 150-200 full cycles before it degrades,” he said. “Our lithium phosphate batteries will do 2500-3000 full cycles which makes them a far better prospect in the long run, if you work out the charge per cycle.” FAST CHARGE And he explained how that an added benefit of Solar Technology's lithium battery is a fast charge rate around 1.5 hours from flat to full charge. The company's LiFePO4 units also have a built-in system to protect against full discharge, overcharge and high temperature. “What are we seeing is diligent end users converting their boats to lithium and solar as they have seen the potential,” added Jeremy. “This has spurred OEM's to look long and hard at the cost versus benefit and also customer request and this is slowly becoming accepted.”

BOATING CAN BE HIGH RISK Wearing a lifejacket or buoyancy aid is important for everyone using the canals, especially around the locks. That's the message from Alistair Hackett, Ocean Safety MD, who explained how it's not just people but canines too that should wear the appropriate safety equipment. “It's not uncommon for dogs to take an unexpected swim in the canal,” he said. Wandering up and down the coachroof, boarding and disembarking between the boat and the towpath can be high risk for a dog as well as the rest of the family.” Ocean Safety has recently introduced the Four Water Dog Buoyancy Aid to its range. The product is available in four sizes, is bright orange making it very visible, easy to put on and has a haul-out handle and lead loop attachment point. The dog lifejacket joins Ocean Safety's large range of children's and adult's lifejackets all suitable for the inland waterways. Alistair added: “Although canal boats are rarely cruising in exposed waters, being able to retrieve a person from the water is still important so it is useful to have a lifebuoy ready to throw.” And he explained that traditional lifebuoys are still the most commonly used solution. Ocean Safety's Standard Lifebuoy, is a round lifebuoy available in 24in and 30in, constructed of a long lasting hard cross-linked polyethylene, with grab lines. 8 The Four Water Dog Buoyancy Aid is available in four sizes

ADDITIONAL TURNAROUND DAYS FROM ABC ABC Leisure Group owns and operates 14 inland waterway marinas as well as operating boats out of an additional six partner locations. The hire fleet is around 190 boats, but the company also operates around 100 boats for other organisations. One trend becoming more noticable is customers requiring more flexible holidays, which the industry is having to adapt to. To help cater for this demand, ABC introduced additional turnround days. “Consumers want the 'Airbnb' type model where they can choose a start and finish date,” said Carl Onens, ABC MD. “This is already a feature of our holiday lets but, in the future, will also need to be available on the hire boats.” FUTURE CHALLENGES In addition, technological advances have led to many improvements on the boats.

“Over the last couple of years, we have replaced classes of boats with boats of the same floor plan, but have included zoned LED lighting, low level mood lighting, powered extractor hoods and shower screens rather than curtains,” said Carl. And he pointed out that

future challenges for the sector will include meeting the target of a carbon neutral country by 2050. “The waterways do not lend themselves to long term holidays on electric boats as infrastructure is not available,” he said. “Equally as challenging is the move

towards electric cars. With most marinas being rural with limited electricity supply, infrastructure to and from the marina by boat and by car will become a key issue to be solved.”

FLOATING DRY DOCKS FROM PDMS

It goes without saying that Covid-19 has rapidly impacted every aspect of life and in response British Marine has mobilised quickly delivering member support and government lobbying. Our Membership Services Team is proactively contacting each British Marine member to see where we can assist at this difficult time. Our dedicated COVID-19 Microsite available to the entire industry is updated daily and hosts extensive information focused on our industry needs. Our government lobbying activity has included bringing together UK boatbuilders to collectively request appropriate government support, in order to keep employment intact and to look after the supply chain. It is through this joint approach we are more likely to garner substantive support in policy making decisions. We will continue work to seek greater fiscal support of all types for our smaller businesses at this unprecedented time. Following a call to the industry I am delighted that many members have come forward offering support to our wider industry, including legal, financial, and communications. This is in addition to marine businesses donating PPE, premises, and expertise to the national effort against Covid-19. This serves as a reminder of how resilient the marine industry is, and whilst there is much uncertainty ahead, I believe we will rise to the challenge.

designed to be eco-friendly and available in a range of sizes to meet the customers specification, enabling safe and easy use.” The dry docks can be offered as either open or covered designs and with an internal layout to suit the end-requirements. Any required civil works and/or dredging can also be provided to offer a complete 'turn-key' solution.

The docks can be used in conjunction with the range of modular pontoon systems from Pontoon and Dock. The dry docks are manufactured in the UK. PDMS represents a range of manufacturers of boat yard equipment including Roodberg slipway trailers and BoatLift Hoists and boat stands from Brownell and Mecanorem.

SURGE IN DEMAND ELECTRIC DRIVE SYSTEMS HAVE LOW NOISE Fischer Panda UK is seeing a growing demand for its electric drive solutions from the owners of inland waterways craft. The company has developed a portfolio of electric motors, battery management systems and complementary generators and offers full-system consultation and installation services. The systems incorporate either a Fischer Panda 'Easy Box' electric drive system or Bellmarine system. Both solutions offer dependability and low noise levels associated with brushless, water-cooled motors. “From the feedback I receive from boat owners, they are interested in low emissions and protecting the environment, plus they want electric

systems that are reliable and quiet, with minimal maintenance,” explained Chris Fower, director of sales and marketing, Fischer Panda UK. “Sizing the systems is down to experience and expertise. As a benchmark, for inland waterways vessels, we work on 1 kW of electrical motor power per ton of displacement, while for seagoing boats it is 2.5 kW per ton.” And Chris explained how the future of the electric market is especially strong in the inland waterways sector due to the low cruising speed of the vessels. Fischer Panda UK offers drive systems in the range from 2kW to 100kW, available with voltages ranging from 24V to 360V depending on the power requirements.

LeeSan's range of selfcontained self pump-out systems are proving invaluable in helping boat owners dispose of black and grey water during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current crisis is bringing difficulties for those who live on inland waterways and canals where access to supplies and services is very different from those available to domestic dwellers. During these challenging times, it is essential that boat owners can continue to dispose of their black and grey water. LeeSan's technical director Karl Sutcliffe says the company has seen a surge in demand for its systems. “Currently we have good stocks available for fast delivery and since we build the units ourselves, will be able to replenish these as required,” he reassured customers. He also added that LeeSan staff are still available to give advice and

RCR LAUNCHES MIDI BILGEAWAY FILTER

Recent testimonials from satisfied boat owners are showing that Perfection Pro from Marineware is still providing a high gloss finish even some years after application. Sally Tooze of Willow Bay Boats has been using Perfection Pro since its launch. She has visited some of the boats that were painted three years ago and reports that high gloss levels remain, even on boats that have had very little maintenance. Sally says she uses Perfection Pro because of its “ease of use and confidence in drying times which is pretty important although it can always be quicker.” LONG-LASTING AND COST-EFFECTIVE The longevity is a major factor, she added, stating that she hopes the paint will

TWO NEW PAINTS FROM TEAMAC Two of the latest paints available from Teal & Mackrill for the inland waterways market are a galley paint and an anti-slip deck paint. The Teamac Galley Paint has been formulated to be used on cabin walls, bulkheads, ceilings and all interior surfaces. It is designed to reduce condensation forming on interior surfaces, by way of a lightly textured surface that can be overpainted with Teamac marine products. The paint can be used in galleys, heads and shower rooms where condensation is most likely to form and is available in one litre size tins. The paint is water soluble and can be recoated after four hours. Teamac Suregrip Anti-Slip Deck Paint contains a coarse aggregate that provides slip resistance. The product is designed to

River Canal Rescue (RCR) has extended its range of Bilgeaway filters with the addition of a new smaller midi filter, suitable for boat owners who have little or no bilge pollution. The cartridge-free, 'plug and play' filter removes up to quarter of a litre of hydrocarbon contaminants (petrol, diesel, engine oil etc) from the bilge area, using a non-toxic solution to render them non-reactive. “The midi and 10in filters are 'no-brainers'; if everyone installs a bilge filter it will dramatically reduce the oil/fuel vessels discharge annually, reducing environmental pollution,” said RCR sales director Damien Forman. “In France it's mandatory for boats to have bilge filters fitted and I hope the UK follows this example.”

NEW ANTENNA FROM WIFIONBOARD With the growth in live aboard and continuous cruising, the key issues for most boaters is the ability to connect to the internet. In addition, boaters want their connection to be equivalent to a landline broadband provision. The demand is driven by the use of streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon, along with productivity applications such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Reliability is key, particularly highlighted during the current CoVID-19 crisis. As the UK sees high-speed mobile networks in 5G and 4G+ becoming more available, Wifionboard has launched a new antenna, that will allow connections to all the 4G and 5G bands along with the legacy 3G bands. The antenna includes the same key features as the company's existing products - high gain and low noise and is also designed to be flexible enough to cope with

UNIQUE CHALLENGES The marine leisure industry has been slow to act when it comes to embracing electrical power. Ross believes that the current crisis will help kickstart a green revolution but is realistic about the challenges facing the industry. “Moving things by water requires a lot more torque and thus a lot more power [than by road],” he said. "Seawater is also a rather harsh environment for moving parts and electrics to operate in. "We ran into these problems when looking for a suitable motor for our electric jet boards ‒ a kind of bodyboard that powers you across the water. To make the motors safe to swim and roll around in the water with, we needed them to be completely enclosed, yet almost all marine engines are designed to work with an open propeller." A crowdfunding campaign to help develop and promote electrical power in the marine industry has exceeded its target. ASAP Water Crafts aimed to raise £150K to develop a new category of electric jet board. Currently the campaign funds stand at £154,420. Founder and chief executive Ross Kemp believes the COVID-19 pandemic will only increase demand for emissions-free technology in the marine leisure sector. “I believe current world events will be the catalyst to a sweeping industry change,” he said. “Watersport enthusiasts, boat owners and anyone else who enjoys the sea will surely want to see cleaner, less polluted waters and this is a key benefit of electric motors."

enclosed engines that are protected from the water. The company applied this thinking to an electric motor designed to travel over the surface of the water and after hundreds of prototypes and tests, has

developed an entirely new system, from the propeller design to the motor casing and insides. Lithium-ion batteries are used to deliver high power and torque whilst keeping weight down.

"Developing the engineering science for a new category of marine vehicle is a slow, painstaking process," added Ross. "However, we hope to have paved the way for new variants of electric marine

Teak has been the preferred option for ship and boat building since the European empire navies lost their battle against the Toredo worm, says Neil Wason of Marine Hardwoods and is the undisputed 'King of Hardwoods'. However, he says, teak from Myanmar - the most well-known source for the product - not complying with UK or EU certification standards, boatbuilders need to look elsewhere. “In stark contrast Indonesia has a centuries old healthy and vibrant teak industry that is tightly regulated,” said Neil. “This system conforms to the strictest standards of sustainability as witnessed by the varying grades of furniture readily available for decades in UK garden centres.” And he pointed out that

SOLAR PANELS SUPPORT ATLANTIC Solar Technology International's PV Logic semi-flexible solar panels will be used to support a team of serving and former Royal Marine Commandos as they row across the North Atlantic Ocean in the Ocean Revival 2020. The panels have passed strict testing to ASTM B117ISO 9227 standard in an independent laboratory with tests including a panel being placed in a sealed tank with salt water spray jetted at it for 10,000 hours. This was in addition to accelerated ultraviolet weather testing. “Both tests represent far more hostile conditions than the team will encounter on their challenge but it is their guarantee that when things get tough they have solar panels they can rely on,” explained Jeremy Usher, marine sales manager for Solar Technology. The panels are suitable for fitting on the curved surface of the specially designed boat and will provide 320W of power.

8 Solar Technology has provided solar panels to support an Atlantic rowing event

CHALLENGE In addition to the panels, Solar Technology International has also supplied two Lifos advanced, lightweight lithium batteries to support the challenge. “This upgrade from the previous batteries and panels is hugely important,” said a team spokesperson. “The North Atlantic is notorious for low pressure systems meaning lots of clouds. This upgrade means that alongside a good power

management plan, the team should have enough power to run their navigation equipment the entire route across with few or no issues.” The crew will attempt to row from New York to London, a 3,700-mile route. They will row for two hours followed by two hours resting and anticipate the journey will take around 60 days. The team aims to focus attention on keeping up the momentum in the fight against plastic in our oceans together with seeking to raise awareness of the Royal Marines family.

8 Ultramar’s new cleaning tools are manufactured from recycled material

While there is a wide range of environmentally-friendly cleaning solutions available, Ultramar has now enabled boat owners to go completely green with their cleaning products by introducing a range of cleaning tools marketed as 'a small step to a better world'. The range consists of four washing brushes of different sizes for use with one telescopic and two fixed long handles and two extrasoft hand brushes. WATER ECONOMY AS STANDARD A runner-up at last autumn's DAME Awards, the range is made of recycled material (98% recycled, 2% ink) covering both the fibres and the plastic, although Ultramar does point out that the percentage of recycled material varies from product to product, as other materials are used in addition to plastic. The products also have a built-in water saving system that feeds water from a hose into the handles and down into chambers within the brushes and from there into the fibre bundles. By dispensing water directly onto the cleaning surface, it can be used more economically. Split fibre tips also hold the water for longer for better cleaning. Other features include rubber bumpers to prevent scratching.

His role will encompass ensuring both the build quality of the Gemini RIBS remains high as well as working closely with BHG Marine and its wide range of RIBs, powerboats and aluminium crafts. Fairline Yachts has appointed Steve Leeson as sales manager for the Americas. Steve began his career in 1986 as an apprentice with Fairline in Oundle, relocating with the brand to America in 2004. He rejoins Fairline from Sunseeker USA where he was vice president. Steve will be responsible for sales and delivery of boats across Canada, North America and South America and will work alongside the already well-established dealer network to support their activity. “I have great aspirations for developing the brand's dealer network across the region and am looking forward to achieving sustainable sales growth and exploring new opportunities in both the established and emerging boating markets,” he said. Stuart Downie has joined the Safinah Group yacht team as consultant. Stuart previously spent eight years at Lloyd's Register as lead coating specialist, managing regulatory, class compliance and product approvals for coatings used in the marine market. Prior to that, he spent 16 years working for AkzoNobel, across various paint and coating markets, in different roles and departments, finishing in Yacht Global Technical Services as the company's application specialist, solving problems in the field, developing yacht specific spray equipment and managing new product field trials. Safinah Group create and deliver solutions to coating issues and engineering challenges aimed at reducing costs, extend asset lifespan and improve quality.

PROFILE

ANDY ASH-VIE FORMER MD OF HARKEN UK

When the biggest regret of recently retired Harken UK MD, Andy Ash-Vie, is not being able to host his retirement party due to Covid-19, it's clear he's enjoyed his career. Like many in the marine sector, Andy starting sailing at a young age. “My dad had me crewing on his Flying 15 when I was three.” But unlike the norm, Andy learnt to sail on the Shatt al-Arab river in Iraq. “My father worked in the oil industry so our family lived in Iraq initially, before moving to Kuwait.” Andy and his four siblings went to boarding school in Canterbury, heading back to Kuwait to visit their parents during the holidays. “We had some great times as teenagers; we were selfsufficient, often travelling alone, socialising in friends' houses and sailing with the local yacht club.” TEN-DAY TRIP One of Andy's lasting impressions is his father being given the air fare for family trips home, only to find they would then be driven back to the UK. “Three months before the journey, my dad would contact the AA and get a ring binder with all the routes. Then we'd pile into the car for a ten-day trip through Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, behind what was the 'iron curtain', into Hungary, Austria and France. “This broadened my outlook. As a family we saw different worlds and it instilled a belief that everything was an opportunity and there were always solutions to problems.” An ethos Andy has followed throughout his career. After school, Andy completed a three year yacht and boat design course in Southampton and went onto make sails for Hoods and build customised boats for John West. In 1986, he joined

yacht designer Warwick Collins who invented the Tandem Keel, working on numerous designs for 2480ft boats. “This was when I first came across Harken, using their deck hardware.” HARDWARE DISTRIBUTOR After working at Southern Ocean shipyards, Andy set up his own yacht design consultancy. In 1992, he suffered a back injury and feared he might not walk again. “Thankfully my operation was a success, but these were difficult times. My wife Cathy was made redundant and we ended up taking in lodgers so we could pay the mortgage.” Andy then joined Harken hardware distributor Peter Fairley, who sold his business to Simpson Lawrence. “When I found out in 1999 the parent company was going to buy our direct competitor, I knew it was time to take matters into my own hands and control my future.” Having asked Harken founders, US-based Peter and Olaf Harken, to set up a standalone business, they travelled to the UK to meet him. “I had a strong belief in this business and its products and I knew with my skills/expertise and Cathy's supply chain management experience, we could build something great.”

HARDWARE PRODUCTS The couple ran the business from their house, but soon space ran out so they moved it elsewhere. “We set up at the Berthon Boat Company and when land in Lymington became available in 2004, we built a warehouse/office.” Alongside hardware products, Andy and Cathy provided dinghy builders with complete kits “We were more than a distributor, we undertook light assembly too, offering a portfolio of products.”

A random call from someone wanting a mainsheet car and track sample resulted in Harken supplying 1060 mainsheet cars and 3/4km of track for a global rock band. “This single order - to hoist up background on-stage visuals - equated to nearly double our annual production.” THEATRICAL CHANDLERIES Realising a gap in the market and with yacht OEMs in decline, Andy joined forces with theatrical chandleries and set designers. In 2009, Harken modified its track and rail system to meet 8 Andy Ash-Vie serves behind the bar at the legendary Harken UK annual party

land-based working -atheight regulations. “Our equipment was particularly popular with superyacht designers/ builders, people who worked at heights and architects.” The portfolio also expanded to include the PowerSeat, Rigger's and LokHead winch range of mobile lifting devices used in rescue and working-atheight applications. With the marine sector still a top priority, Andy's desire to 'make the best products at a fair price' and 'serve customers beyond their expectations', has left the UK business in good shape for his successor and early days colleague, Tom Peters. TRACK SYSTEM “Post covid-19, the market will look very different, but Harken UK is in a safe pair of hands with Tom. Looking back, I'm so happy I jumped in to grow the business. One of my most rewarding achievements is developing the track system, which saved the life of a factory worker.” Retirement for Andy is spending more time on his local councillor duties, honing his guitar-playing skills (he has ten to choose from), helping a local boat builder and taking part in regattas on his modified international 6m yacht.
