New Quick Cleats New windlass Safe boarding pages 14-16 Dream Yacht Charter is to invest £130m in its fleet during 2019/2020. The company has increased its fleet by 228 yachts in 2019, with 59 due for delivery in Q4 alone including 44 destined for the company's Caribbean and Nassau bases. The company has committed to 195 yachts for delivery in 2020, of which 112 yachts will be delivered in the first six months. The Mediterranean will benefit from an additional 83 yachts in the first few months of 2020, 25 of which will be Sun Loft 47s. The new Caribbean fleet includes yachts aimed at attracting a younger customer to sailing holidays. Loïc Bonnet, founder and CEO, explained that the Caribbean and Mediterranean remain key areas to growth.

Exotic locations are also important with additions to the company's fleets in Asia, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. The company has also added seven new destinations across Europe and the US east coast for bareboat and skippered charter customers. The latest additions means the company now offers sailing holidays from 64 bases worldwide. A large proportion of the boats are equipped with watermakers, gensets and air-conditioning to make sailing holidays as comfortable as possible.

STRONG PERFORMANCE FROM BRITISH COMPANIES Increased use of environmentally friendly materials and greater adaption of technology to improve accessibility to boating are among the themes in this year's DAME nominations. The nine-strong jury of the DAME Design Award 2019 competition has chosen 59 products from a field of 118 entries from 27 countries to enter the final rounds of judging. Around 25% of the nominees are from British companies including Teignbridge Propellers, Rooster and Dura Composites. The nominations represent products from new materials and items of personal boating equipment, to complex

electronics and large items of machinery. “It is critical that marine companies focus on design, in all of its aspects, to ensure that consumer expectations are met, said Birgit Schnaase, jury chair, who has 24 years of experience as an engineer and interior designer. “We also need smart design to address important issues like production efficiency, environmental impact improvement and greater integration.” Winners will be announced at the METSTRADE business briefing on November 19.

WILL HARM CANALS

Despite the continued confusion over Brexit, not to mention the time and energy it is costing businesses, October appears to have been a positive month. As the marine industry across the world gears up for METSTRADE, this month we have also seen much emphasis on apprentices and how important they are to the industry. Apprentices have been recognised and valued at events including the British Marine Electrical and Electronics Association apprentice’s competition in which teams from boatbuilders across the country completed an electrical technical task. And we have also had the Shipwrights Lectures, aimed at young people working in the marine industry and organised by the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights and hosted by the University of Southampton. It’s been refreshing to see so many apprentices being inspired by key figures in the industry and it’s been interesting to hear about the career progression some of the apprentices have taken and their goals and desires for the future. It’s clear that the industry is responding to current challenges, whether they are dealing with the skills shortage and lack of training we hear so much about or whether its sustainability and environmental protection with these issues key in the DAME Award and METSTRADE Boat Builder Award nominations. On the subject of sustainability, once again, the subject of how to handle and what to do with the increasing number of redundant boats, particularly GRP craft is on the agenda at METSTRADE. It’s a subject that keeps cropping up, but there are some positive steps being taken. Italian based Amer Yachts has chosen to address the issue by investigating the properties of Filavia, a recyclable composite fibre and using it for non-structural components while analysis and tests are carried out by industry bodies paving the way towards certification. Amer Yachts hopes that eventually all parts of the boat including the initial model will be recyclable. In the UK, MarineShift360 is a system that evaluates the life cycle of materials and processes involved in boat construction in an attempt to understand and reduce the environmental impact of the boat. One of the latest businesses to sign up is marine logistics and transportation company GAC Pindar. The aim is to reduce fossil fuel consumption and packing materials, together with developing sustainable solutions for transporting marine boats and equipment beyond carbon offsetting. Last year, an Italian project was launched to experiment with the most efficient methods of dismantling and disposal of GRP boats and also campervans and some trains. The project aims to develop a platform to manage the recycling process, from disassembly to material treatment in order to obtain fibres and resins that can be used again. I’m looking forward to hearing progress updates. I’m sure it’s not just marinas and harbours that would like to see a solution to disused and discarded GRP boats.

Gearing up for METSTRADE

Heathrow's expansion plans will cause significant harm to the local canals and rivers, destroying habitats and heritage and reducing access to the waterways. That's according to the Inland Waterways Association in its response to the government's Heathrow Airport Expansion Consultation. The IWA states that around 13 miles of the Grand Union Canal and the Slough Arm will be affected by the permanent loss of 900 acres of land in the southern part of the Colne Valley Regional Park. This loss of land will narrow the park and disrupt wildlife connectivity between

the Thames Basin and the Chilterns. The government's preferred masterplan will mean combining three rivers (Wraysbury River, River Colne and Bigley Ditch) into a single waterway that can pass under the runway whilst the Duke of Northumberland's River and the Longford River will do the same in a parallel covered channel. The IWA has expressed concern that roof voids allowing daylight to the rivers will be open to spillages, causing pollution that could potentially threaten the ecology of the Thames.

8 The Grand Union Canal – the IWA is concerned about the effect of the Heathrow expansion on local waterways

According to the IWA, measures to reduce the effects of the expansion will be insufficient to mitigate the harm to the natural environment. Likewise, the expansion of the airport will be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of those in the entire area, not just those close to the airport. Potential community funding should therefore be widened and include measures to create new open space and improve access to the waterway corridor.

MARATHON SIGNS NEW BRANDS WASHINGTON POST JIM NOLAN runs US based James Nolan Associates The opening presentation at the recent Grow Boating Marketing Summit was “The Who Behind the How: The people we need to reach with digital marketing.” Given by Jack Ellis, Info-Link it provided compelling statistics and information about today's and the future's boating market in the US. Ellis said that overall we are a U$40 billion industry and that there are about 8.5 million boat owners that own about 11 million boats. Annual sales of new and pre-owned boats dropped from almost 1.5 million in 2000 to just over 1.1 million in 2011 and have risen to almost 1.3 million in 2018. Today, the boating industry serves three distinct macro segments, each of which is unique in their experiences and expectations. The largest segment, Our Dedicated Core, are predominantly repeat boat buyers and represent about 6.5 million boat owners with an average age of 58. They will account for about three-quarters of 2020 recreational expenditures and are expected to buy over 850,000 new and preowned boats in 2020 a quarter of which are likely to be new boats. Some 6.5% or 425,000 leave the segment each year. The primary long-term threat to this core is biology. Over a million people in the US who own boats are over 70 years old with an attrition rate of 15%. Fortunately, half of Our Dedicated Core are Baby Boomers, the wealthiest generation in history.

THEPERSONBEHINDTHEFACE Interview by Alice Driscoll

EDOUARD FEISS lessons, humility, adventure and a ton of great tips.

How I got into this industry... I fell in love with sailing over 15 years ago, thanks to my friend Benjamin. Ten years later, we had the idea of creating a cruising guide fuelled by the sailing community. We quit our jobs and created Navily. Best advice I've ever received... If you're not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you've launched too late. In today's fast-paced economy, it's important to launch fast, learn and then improve. Trying to do everything perfect is often a great way to miss a window of opportunity. You should really read... If you're fluent in French, Bernard Moitessier's books are great to get back to the roots of sailing. Simple

One thing the industry needs less of is...Fear of innovation. The industry still relies heavily on the old sailor who likes things the way they were, however too few turn to the younger generation who will be the main source of growth for the industry. Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... Synergies' is a hidden way of saying 'I'd like to work with you but I don't how, please find a way for me'. A word that's thrown around too hastily these days. Best place I've been... Florence, Italy. I lived there for three years. I love Tuscany, the food, the wine, the people, the amazing landscapes. Don't worry about... Failing. You have to try if you want to succeed and failing is also part of the adventure.

What matters is doing your best to avoid failure and learn from your mistakes. Favourite meal...Italian food for sure. Bistecca Fiorentina? Pici Cacio e Pepe? Such a hard question for a food lover like me. One thing I couldn't live without...Probably food again. I love trying new things, new combinations, eating out, discovering new restaurants. How I cope with stress... Running is definitely a big help. Sailing too although it now reminds me of work. Something about you that people might be surprised by... I speak four languages fluently; English, French, Spanish and Italian. By the age of 25, I had lived and worked in five different countries, USA, Argentina, Spain, France and Italy. The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) has responded to the government's latest HS2 Phase 2b consultation, saying changes have brought additional impacts and earlier concerns remain unresolved. The IWA response was submitted to the latest consultation on design refinement proposals for Phase 2b, Crewe to Manchester and West Midlands to Leeds. The proposed changes affect the Coventry Canal, the Erewash Canal, the unrestored Nottingham Canal and the Aire & Calder Navigation.

fencing on the viaduct and embankment. At Stanton Gate on the Erewash Canal a change of route to avoid diverting the M1 means the motorway bridge will no longer ned to be demolished and replaced. However, because there will be a new road bridge, an auto-transformer section needs screening and concerns about the height of

the viaduct, the design of its two canal crossings and the need for noise protection remain. Although the Nottingham Canal at Trowell is abandoned it forms part of a long distance footpath and nature reserve. There are concerns that the new HS2 route will sever this with a deep cutting and IWA has asked for an aqueduct to

RESEARCH SHIP TO FOLLOW IN MAYFLOWER'S WAKE 8 A replica of the original Mayflower

A global consortium is building an unmanned, fully-autonomous research ship to cross the Atlantic on the fourth centenary of the original Mayflower voyage in September 2020. The Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) project is coordinated by the University of Plymouth with support from IBM and ProMare. If successful, it will be one of the first selfnavigating, full-sized vessels to cross the Atlantic Ocean and opens the door on a new era of autonomous research ships. “Putting a research ship to sea can cost tens of thousands of dollars or pounds a day and

is limited by how much time people can spend onboard – a prohibitive factor for many of today's marine scientific missions,” said Brett Phaneuf, founding board member of

ProMare and director of the MAS project. “With this project, we are pioneering a cost-effective and flexible platform for gathering data that will help safeguard

SAIL SHAPE TAKES OVER QUAY SAILS Sail Shape. The company started a full rigging service replacing masts, booms, furling systems and running and standing rigging. Sail Shape doubled in size in three years and by 2014 Alan was successfully CAD designing sails using Smar Azure techniques. In 2016 the company expanded from its small 1000 sq ft loft in Fowey

to a 5,000 sq ft purpose-laid out production loft in Lostwithiel. In 2017 Sail Shape bought an 8m Blackman and White Orion 2100 CNC cutting machine and in late 2017 the company invested in the Prodim Proline tool for digitising flat templates and patterning boats for covers which allowed the

With METSTRADE 2019 around the corner, you may want to raise greater awareness of your brand and a content-driven PR campaign could be just the thing. It’s about telling your brand story, focusing on producing engaging content that directly connects with your audience. Always begin with a plan: Consider your audience what do they love? What inspires them? What will resonate? If you can't answer, do some market research. Once you have identified your target audience, work on developing a strategy and tone of voice which appeals, as well as choosing topics of interest for the content plan. 5 Create a blog: Once you have a plan, you then need a platform. This might seem obvious, but it can be easy to fall at the first hurdle. A blog is the most effective way to provide your audience with updates and keep them engaged. And it's great for SEO. 5 Combine digital and print content: While you might be tempted to neglect print media in favour of a digital PR strategy, this may limit your reach. Print media is still important and allows you to appeal to a wider audience. 5 Think carefully about social media: Keep your content and brand - consistent across all channels. And don't be shy, promote your blog on your social channels. With so many people accessing news this way, its key to ensuring your content is reaching your intended audience. 5 Be authentic: Create content people can engage with. Write about topics that genuinely interest you and your audience and provide ways for them to engage with you.

HONDA GROWS ITS BOAT BUILDER ALLIANCE Honda Marine has bolstered its boat builder alliance with two new purpose-designed Honda-powered leisure boat ranges. The H-Series is a line of aluminium RIBs, designed and built in partnership with Highfield Boats and the 4XC range is a powerboat line created in collaboration with Ranieri International. The new lines follow on from Honda's alliance with Dutch inland boatbuilder Maxima and are available exclusively through Honda's authorised marine dealer network. “Our aim was to make the boat buying process as simple as possible,” said Steve Morris, head of Power Products at Honda (UK). “Though each of the 12 boats has a subtly different application, they all come as ready-to-go packages with the most important features included in the price.”

GROWING He added: “Both these brands are very well established and growing, both are easy to do business with and both have factories with ample capacity to accommodate the increased production that exclusive Honda-branded packages will require.”

BUSINESSMATTERS HELEN THORNLEY: Technical officer at the ATT

Crew-cab panel vans are very popular and a recent case involving Coca-Cola has thrown doubt on the tax treatment of these vehicles. Back in 1997, Coca-Cola moved to supplying technicians with vans instead of estate cars. The vans were three types of crew-cab vehicle - a series 1 or 2 VW Kombi and a Vauxhall Vivaro. All three look very similar and are based on a panel van design. Each had additional seating and windows behind the driver and had been subject to further modifications after manufacture, such as the addition of racking. All the vehicles had been treated by Coca-Cola as vans for benefit-in-kind purposes. HMRC challenged this, arguing that all three types were cars. This resulted in demands for additional National Insurance contributions (NIC) and income tax from both Coca-Cola and their technicians. They appealed and in March 2019, an earlier tribunal ruling which decided that the two VW Kombis were cars and the

CREW CAB VANS AND TAX

Vauxhall Vivaro was a van was upheld. BENEFIT IN KIND When an employee is provided with a car and they are allowed to use it privately they must pay income tax on the value of the benefit in kind - a percentage of the list price of the car, including any accessories. If private fuel is provided, the same percentage is applied to a set figure to calculate the benefit for the year. The employer must also pay Class 1A NIC on the benefitin-kind. Where a van is used privately, the benefit in kind is calculated using a flat rate

regardless of the cost of the van or its CO2 emissions. If any fuel is provided for private use, then the fuel benefit charge is also a flat rate, which is much lower than the car equivalent. As well as a van having a lower benefit in kind charge than a car, it is possible for there to be no benefit in kind at all if the private use of the van is incidental or limited to ordinary commuting from home to work. For a car, any private use means a benefit in kind. What differences there are between the vehicles in question appear to centre around the seats to the rear of the driver. The Vivaro

vehicle held to be a van left the assembly line as a panel van and was subsequently modified by Coca-Cola to add a second row of two seats behind the driver, together with a single window. The seats did not span the vehicle, leaving storage space to the side. These extra seats could be removed with tools. SEATS ALREADY FITTED Both models of the Kombi vehicles held to be cars arrived from the manufacturer with a second row of seats already fitted. This row spanned the vehicle and there were windows on both sides. However, the

whole row of seats could be removed without tools and it was a company requirement that the seats were removed during working hours. The type of vehicle also affects the capital allowances available to the employer and the VAT recovery. Again, being classed as a van is preferable for tax. Following the Coca-Cola decision in March 2019, employers should review the tax treatment of all crew-cab type panel vans provided to their employees. Unless it was possible to distinguish their vehicles on the facts, some employers will have found themselves where certain vehicles can no longer be considered a van and must be taxed as a car, significantly increasing the tax cost for both them and their employees. If the outcome of the Coca-Cola case changes on appeal, employers may need to revisit their 2018-19 P11D returns. If the current decision is upheld, then employers must consider if they should amend returns for earlier years. Good advice should be taken.

BREXIT NICK HOLLAND: Mastervolt and Power Products

FIND AN AGREEMENT AND MOVE ON Nick Holland, international sales manager at Mastervolt and Power Products, has, over the last three years, become fed up with the whole Brexit process and the political bickering both in parliament and within the EU. “Levels of uncertainty and confidence across all market sectors are increasing daily and our politicians need to find a way to reach an agreement so we can all move on.”

12 | NOVEMBER 2019

Fortunately, since the referendum in 2016, Nick has seen overall business within the UK and the EMEA region increase year on year; some growth has been organic and some down to acquisitions that's added premium brands to the portfolio. “The increase in business,” says Nick, “has allowed us to recruit another individual within the UK team and focus on the additional technical support that our customers require.”

DIFFERENT OPINIONS However, keeping manufacturing costs under control has been challenging as raw materials prices have risen globally. All of Nick's customers have different opinions on how Brexit is going to play itself out - “Our main UK marine distribution partner, Aquafax, is holding at least three months stock across all of the brands in our portfolio.” But whilst Nick sees uncertainty, he says that

there are also high levels of optimism that the future may bring many new and exciting opportunities for our customers. POSITIVE He notes that “order books within the marine OEM sector have been healthy since the referendum, in part due to the weakening pound, however, long term outlooks in the main are still positive.” As for the future, Nick believes that “if the UK can

negotiate a free trade deal with the EU in a timely manner and sterling remains weak against the euro and the US dollar, I'm confident that our business and our UK customers will continue to grow.” However, he sees skill shortages in manufacturing if freedom of movement is curtailed. In summary, he says that as a business leader “it is difficult to make longer term plans with all the uncertainty and yet it looks like it is set to continue for quite some time more.”

DECK HARDWARE

FOUR NEW QUICK CLEATS FROM BARTON MARINE

BEST IN CATEGORY FOR HARKEN Harken's CLR mooring winch won best product award in the deck equipment, sails and rigging category of the 2018 DAME Awards. The pop-up winch is now being installed as an option on at least three MFGrs offerings. B-J, Solaris and XYachts with more on the way. The winch is flush to the deck when not in use stowing completely below deck, offering weight and space saving over predecessor models. The CLR incorporates five aluminium columns that rotate together around a centre axis. Working together, they create a very light drum that Harken says provides substantially more lineholding power and low-speed torque than would be available using a traditional drum. The CLR also has internal LED lights at the bottom of each column for use in lowlight mooring situations. Harken has produced two versions: 600kg max pulling force for boats from 13.7m 18.2m and 1200kg for boats from 18.2m - 27.4m. It is available in 12 or 24 volt electric or hydraulic power. The flush deck plates are available in aluminium, chrome or wood grain finishes. It is suitable for both sail and power yachts.

14 | NOVEMBER 2019

New for 2020 Barton Marine's Quick Cleats are available in multiple sizes for smaller and larger lines providing an easy solution for securing lines. The product is designed to enable guests to assist with jobs such as hanging fenders or securing a kayak without any knot tying knowledge. “Quick Cleat is an innovation that provides the best alternative to tying knots, securing numerous items for leisure craft and water sports, fishing and work boats,” explained Suzanne Blaustone, Barton MD. “When sailing single handed or with friends and family who may not have experience on the water, handling all the necessary tasks at the right time becomes stressful.” Sizes range from the 316

marine grade stainless steel 60040 which handles working loads up to 540kg and 610mm lines and large and small heavy-duty nylon Zytel

by Dupont versions that have working loads of 70kg or 30kg. A fourth version which is designed to adhere to inflatables using a special

NEW ANCHOR WINCHES FROM VETUS The new Maxwell Tasman series of winches from VETUS are suitable for high performance RIBs and tenders among other craft. The high-performance drum winches have been developed to be robust and reliable. They feature the Maxwell 1000 watt and 600 watt motors and have a line speed up to 60m a minute. The winches provide are designed to ensuring an anchor can be deployed and retrieved quickly and efficiently. The gearbox is made from marine grade aluminium and anodised for optimal protection. The winches have larger diameter shafts, large

bearings and seals and a robust design. With the 5mm thick drum plates fitted to a high strength 2205 grade stainless steel shaft of 28.5mm diameter, the assembly is sturdy enough to pull up to 1000kg. Large diameter plain bearings ensure a longer life in the harsh marine environment, while the non-gearbox end has a self-lubricated composite bearing for minimal maintenance. The Tasman winches can be installed in 14 different positions with 15° increments and have a large diameter stainless steel output hub. An emergency operation allows anchor deployment if power is lost.

C-Quip launched the Båtsystem range of deck hardware to the UK at this year's Southampton International Boat Show. The Swedish manufacturer's products include those for boarding and disembarking on and off a boat such as ladders, bathing platforms - for bow and stern - davits and those for anchoring. “With the right equipment onboard, boating can be even more fun and safe,” explained C-Quip MD Ian Cooke. “Båtsystem is a leading specialist in creating solutions for comfortable and safe boarding and disembarking for crew, equipment and even pets.” Båtsystem davits are available in several different models. The removable products are strong enough to hold up to 150kg each. A hinged mounting on the transom allows a dinghy to move forward when hoisted and aft when lowered. Boarding is easier and there is a better weight distribution while the dinghy is hoisted pointed out Ian. Short ropes avoid sideways movements when the dinghy is launched. The ladders can be used from the stern, bow or from the side of a boat and telescopic ladders are also available. Cranes to facilitate the handling of an outboard engine, shopping or other heavy equipment are also part of Båtsystem's deck hardware range. The products are made from quality acid-proof AiSi 316 stainless steel that has been hand polished.

Technical Marine Supplies has expanded its range to include new INO rope padeyes and three new winches from Karver. Deck hardware is a big part of business for the company that distributes brands such as Selden deck hardware, Karver and INO. "As always the trends are for new lighter, stronger and more efficient designs often utilising soft or dyneema attachments rather than a more traditional metallic solution," said Nick Cook, sales manager for TMS. The Ino-Padeye range includes three sizes catering for maximum working loads

IMP has expanded its deck hardware offering with a new windlass from Italwinch. The IKI windlass comes in standard or PRO versions and is designed to optimise space on board. Available as 12V or 24V (PRO model only) and suitable for boats up to 9m, features include an incorporated motor gearbox, a stainless steel body and chain counter sensor. Further windlasses - from MZ Electronics - are also available from IMP. The NV-16 anchor windlass is for boats from 28 to 40m and for chains with stud links measuring from 12 to 16mm. LIGHTWEIGHT LIFEJACKET TeamO Marine Safety Products is to launch its new Micro lifejacket at METSTRADE 2019. The Micro been designed for day sailors, rib drivers and anyone who is on the water for daytime sport activities including fishing. It has been developed to be a comfortable, lightweight lifejacket that will not hinder movement but which still offers all of the ISO-standard performance needed to keep wearers safe. “The Micro is the smallest, lightest inshore lifejacket available on the market,” explained Lauren Mead, TeamO marketing and sales director. “It is 15% lighter than any other lifejacket at just 750grams (based on research of ten other styles from the market leading brands).” She added: “The new cover shape allows for an absolutely tiny lifejacket, particularly over the shoulders and behind the neck. You really can hardly feel that you are wearing a lifejacket at all. “I think it is going to be an easy choice for coaches and support crew who spend long days in ribs supporting race fleets who find current lifejackets heavy and cumbersome.” The lifejacket has been ISO approved to 170N. It has a micro cover with racer back styling and an ergonomic profile that reduces size without reducing performance. Other features include a quick-burst zip, increased manoeuvrability with a thinner profile and a lightweight dogbone style closure. A whistle is also included. Three colour options are available. The jacket is made in the UK. 8 Stand 07.251

Hempel's Silic Seal primer removes the need to remove existing antifouling when switching from conventional antifouling. “This product works not only on motor boats, but also on sailing boats, where sailors claim they gain an extra knot due to slippery silicone surface,” explained Zeljka Bassanese, Hempel's market communication manager. “Once when applied correctly there is no need to re-paint for two years, only occasional gentle cleaning might be needed.” She added: “Hempel is therefore not only ready to meet legislative changes in this area, which everybody is talking about, but they want to lead the way in the industry by showing that biocide-free coatings are equally as high performing as coatings containing biocides. “At Hempel they feel responsible not only to have biocide-free products on the market, but also to educate the market.” 8 Hempel will be exhibiting at METSTRADE 2019 on stand 07.339.

Seaglaze – The Professionals Choice

Marine equipment supplier, Seaview Progress, will show KiwiGrip's new and improved packaging at this year's METSTRADE. KiwiGrip is a durable, nonskid deck coating applied with a roller. The product has been re-released in a pouch rather than a can bringing a

number of benefits. The roller cover now has less plastic per litre than the existing version whilst the new design makes the spout easier to wipe and reseal. The product can be more easily stored by squeezing to remove the air before resealing.

8 The new KiwiGrip pouches

"When ordering a 4L and only using half the product you will be left with two fully sealed one litre pouches as opposed to a half-full can that usually skins over and suffers product loss," said Simon

Wood, UK sales manager for Seaview Progress. The new pouches ship better too. "When a can takes a side impact during transit, often the lid will pop off creating a mess," said Simon. "KiwiGrip pouches are less susceptible to impacts from drops or strikes." Seaview Progress will also show the PSS PRO shaft seal, designed specifically for applications requiring increased durability and resistance to harsh environments. The PSS PRO is a mechanical face seal using Seaview's stainless steel and carbon sealing components but with a reinforced silicone bellow, a secondary shaft retention collar, stainless steel hose clamps and an optional Nitronic 50 rotor upgrade. 8 Seaview Progress will be on stand 12.606.

OLAS Guardian from Exposure OLAS is a new wireless engine kill switch. Acting as a virtual kill cord it will stop the engine within two seconds of a person going overboard. The product works by wirelessly logging and tracking up to 15 crew members to an engines' kill switch via small, wearable transmitters, the OLAS wrist Tags or OLAS Float-On light. If the transmitter is submerged overboard, or is separated by distance, the connection is broken, cutting the engine and triggering an inbuilt 85 decibel alarm and if connected, an alarm on a mobile phone. The engine can be restarted after five seconds and a rescue can be performed. “OLAS Guardian enables leisure and professional drivers to move freely around their powerboat,

without constantly having to remember to detach and re-attach a wire kill cord,” explained Exposure Lights, product manager Tom Harrop. The product has been designed to run alongside an existing kill cord and will operate even if the physical

NEW ROD RIGGING FROM OYS

8 The PS440 is Typhoon’s flagship drysuit

METSTRADE will see a launch of a new series of rigging design from OYS. The N-Series of rod rigging will focus on sustainability, extending the lifecycle of products and the reduction of waste through the yacht's life. The series will launch with rigging fittings providing the interface between the mast and deck.

NEW BLOCKS FROM ALLEN BROS Allen Bros has a new range of plain bearing blocks using 100% recycled plastics and 20% less material than the previous version. The blocks use the outer cheek and ultra-strap from the 20 and 30mm dynamic range, allowing Allen Bros to manufacture the products more efficiently. It also helps to reduce the long-term impact of plastics and un-recyclable materials on the environment. The new range also features a grey sheave to differentiate them from the existing dynamic range, that has black sheaves. The blocks' static loading capabilities makes them suitable for take-up systems or applications that don't require high dynamic performance. In addition, Allen Bros launched a new pivoting mast step earlier in the year,

28 | NOVEMBER 2019

8 Allen Bros blocks are made from recycled plastic

designed for dinghies or small keelboats that have easily adjustable rigging whilst sailing. The design has been developed to reduce loading points in the deck of the boat when the mast pivots, spreading the forces more evenly. Having a pivoting mast step and heel also allows for a consistent mast bend profile resulting in more accurate rig setup. The mast step is CNC machined from 6082 aluminium and anodised black. The mast heel is made from nylon and currently available in three diameters, 37.5mm, 41mm and 45mm. 8 Stand 03.216

The concept is for a more modular approach, making the component parts more accessible with less replacements required during the rigging's lifecycle, reducing both ownership cost and waste. “The design team here have really enjoyed this new challenge,” said Ben Green, head of design at OYS. “We have a dynamic team of talented designers and it's

NEW HEAVY-DUTY CLIP Hidden panel mounting systems company Fastmount has released its new LP-SMX, adding a low profile, high performance clip to its range. The LP-SMX is a screw fix male clip that offers an extra-heavy duty 15kg pull out load, making it suitable for both heavyweight and large thin interior panels on superyachts. It is the third clip across Fastmount's range of products that provides such a heavy-duty fixing. “We really see this being taken up by designers and

installers that are after a bit of a 'one size fits all' solution,” said Gregg Kelly, MD and head of innovation at Fastmount. “It is low profile, incredibly easy to install and great for preinstallation and flat packing due to its extremely durable head design.” An additional feature is a pin on the back of the clip, which drops into the mark on the panel made by the CP08ST centrepoint, helping to locate the clip onto the panel. 8 The Fastmount LP-SMX will be demonstrated on stand 02.224 at METSTRADE.

POSITIONING VULNERABILITIES ARE IMPROVED Digital Yacht's new TriNav GPS160 is a new, high performance positioning sensor using GPS, Glonass and the new Galileo satellite systems for positioning accuracies and redundancies. The company says typical accuracy is better than 1m and data can be set to output at up to 18Hz for smoother plotter track displays. TriNav software technology also improves positioning vulnerabilities that could occur through spoofing and local interference. The device can be field programmed for a variety of modes such as single GNSS operation such as Galileo only as well as output configurations such as update rate or NMEA sentence structure. The GPS160 is available with a NMEA 0183 output and a USB variant for PC, MAC and Linux. For NMEA 2000 systems, a bundle is available with a Digital Yacht iKonvert NMEA 2000 gateway. The GPS160 also supports an external MOB switch or device. When activated, the product creates a 'synthesised' AIS SART MOB message on its NMEA output which can be interfaced with a local plotter for MOB identification. Galileo is the new global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that has been developed over the past two decades. It joins the GPS and GLONASS systems and offers mariners a third reliable positioning source. It is planned to be fully operational in 2020.

CONNECTIONS ARE DOUBLED The new SBN-2 device from Actisense has been developed to give boat owners and installers the ability to set up a plug and play NMEA2000 network with a NMEA2000 backbone in a single device. With built in termination resistors, the SBN-2 allows up to eight NMEA2000 devices to be connected. “When we released the SBN-1 a couple of years ago, it came with four NMEA2000 drops,” said Phil Whitehurst, Actisense CEO. “Our engineering team has been working on ways to give our customers the ability to connect even more devices to their vessels.” The SBN-2 is manufactured using ruggedised, watertight and flame-retardant overmoulded housing, making it suitable for potentially wet and harsh marine environments. 8 Stand 03.132

LEGAL, INSURANCE, FINANCE AND SERVICES

A-Plan commercial marine insurance provides insurance solutions to the UK marine industry covering all types of businesses from marinas to boatyards, businesses to sole traders. Using its industry connections, A-Plan utilises a panel of insurers to provide the right solutions for business directors and officers with solutions for legal, engineering, personal indemnity, motor fleet and all forms of terrorism. “The UK marine insurance market has a number of challenges at the moment,” said Malcolm Stewart, A-Plan branch manager. “The market is starting to harden, resulting in higher premiums with more conditions and some insurers are withdrawing from certain high-risk classes of marine insurance.” And Malcolm says the rise of cybercrime has also resulted in cyber insurance becoming more important for businesses. DATA BREACH Cyber insurance will provide cover in the event of hacking or malware attacks and provide support for the business in the event of a data breach and the resulting legal implications and potential fines that would follow, he explained. And he added: “The difficulties in the marketplace and evolving risks that face UK marine business have made the use of specialist marine insurance brokers more relevant. “We ensure that each client is placed in the best market for the type of risk and the exposure that they face and cyber insurance is an example of a service which is now becoming increasingly relevant for the marine industry.”

- as part of a four-year transformation plan. The withdrawal is as a result of a strategic review resulting in the company exiting from a number of operations. It is currently unknown whether this will result in redundancies or whether any of its regional offices will close as a result of the restructure. “The decisive measures we are taking across our underwriting portfolio will allow us to focus and build on our track record of providing risk solutions to our clients' most complex needs,” said Simon Beale, MS Amlin CEO. “It will refocus our business and ensure we are best placed to serve our clients and their shifting demands, as technology, digitalisation and data and analytics trends continue to change the nature of insured risk.” Software consultancy SRO Solutions has a new cloudbased service following a partnership with US distributor Projetech. The deal allows SRO Solutions to offer Projetech's cloud-hosted Maximo as a service solution in conjunction with its own tools that offer ship to shore data replication and allow users to carry out software upgrades and data migration without shutting down their systems. “Projetech is extremely excited about this partnership with SRO Solutions,” said Darrell Tucker, enterprise SaaS executive at Projetech. “SRO has a great reputation within the Maximo community and brings forward proven tools, like SDU and SDR.” IBM's Maximo asset management system is designed to help marine companies reduce operation risk and cost, manage assets

SPECIALITY BUSINESS As part of the restructure, MS Amlin instead plans to create a speciality insurance business by combining its Marine and Property and Casualty sectors. “This is in no way a reflection on our renowned UK yacht business or our people but comes as part of a group wide strategy to reposition our business for

the future,” says Keith Lovett, who heads up the yacht operations division at MS Amlin's office in West Malling, Kent which currently employs 30 people. And he explained that while the UK yacht sector is a 'brilliant business' that is expected to thrive in the future, all areas of the insurance market are cyclical with yacht insurance no exception.

8 MS Amlin is to combine its Marine and Property and Casualty sectors

The yacht insurance sector has been hardening over the last couple of years, with many exiting the class. The office will continue to operate and trade in the same way including its claims service until MS Amlin finds 'suitable long-term solutions' for its UK yacht business.

PROFILE

JEREMY USHER SOLAR TECHNOLOGY

Many people would be envious of Jeremy Usher's childhood. In the mid 1970s, aged nine, his mother and stepfather took him out of school and together with his two younger siblings, the family set sail on a Golden Hind 31 for the trip of a lifetime. “They owned two drycleaning shops in London and we lived in Hertfordshire. Having learnt to sail, they bought a boat, put a manager in charge of the shops and set off.” From England the family headed to Greece, stopping off in Alicante for six months over the winter and once in Greece, they flew to Australia, exploring the east coast in a jeep and caravan. By the age of ten Jeremy could strip an engine and he and his brother indulged in their passion for fishing. While home-schooling was a priority, Jeremy says 'life experiences' gave him the best education. “We were caught in a Force 12 for nine and a half days trying to get across the Bay of Biscay, strapped in our seats, when a tanker pulled up to check we were ok. It was thumbs up from all of us.” TRAINEE OFFICER After three years, the children returned to mainstream schooling, settling in Emsworth, Hampshire, where their parents bought a pub. Jeremy worked for Emsworth sailing school in the summer and at 17, he joined the Merchant Navy as a trainee officer, working on Shell tankers. “I completed enough sea time to secure my second mate's ticket, but then wanted to change career so returned to college in Southampton to study for a HND in Yacht and Boatyard Management. During the summer months I worked for Sunsail abroad which is where I met my wife Lucy.”

32 | NOVEMBER 2019

Jeremy joined Ian Terry Engineering as a production manager, providing lightweight titanium sailing equipment and during his time there, supported three America's Cup, Admirals Cup and Whitbread teams. In the early 1980s, he moved to Camper & Nicholsons as a project manager working on super yachts. STRIP-PLANKED YACHT “This was a career highlight as it enabled me to demonstrate my boat building skills. I delivered a Bill Dixon western

red sealer strip-planked epoxy boat 'Yannakee II' on time and on budget - it was the largest strip-planked yacht in the UK and winner of the Fort Lauderdale Super Yacht Award.” The birth of his first child prompted Jeremy to take a home-based role - as European sales director for Pompanette Inc who owned Hood Yacht Systems and Bomar. This was followed by a sales/senior manager role for glazing specialist, Trend Marine, involving a family move to Norfolk.

8 Jeremy Usher is sales director at Solar Technology

After 12 years, Jeremy wanted to move his growing family to Devon. Once there, he initially worked in marine propulsion, but was then appointed general manager at Lewmar with a brief to set up a glass plant in Havant. “This was a fast-paced business and a 'tough gig' to set up from scratch.” After four years' commuting to Havant, in 2017 Jeremy joined Tewkesbury-based Solar Technology as sales director.

QUALITY SYSTEMS The solar engineering and innovation business provides 'off grid' solar solutions for sectors including marine, caravan, RV and equestrian and it recently acquired a lithium phosphate battery firm Lifos. “Everyone's looking to use solar technology, however we are one of a few to design and provide quality systems at the top end of the market.” As more people use more devices on boats and other vehicles, demand for solar power continues to grow. “We're expanding around 10-15% across the board, we have more product designs to launch and we're in the running for a Queens Award.” When Solar Technology started in 2000, there were three staff. The firm now employs 12, plus four European distributors. Jeremy still sails; he has a Channel Island 22 boat, moored in Kingsbridge, Devon. “I love being afloat around Devon and holiday in France with my wife and three boys.” He describes Oceanair founder, Andy Fitzgerald, as his mentor: “I met Andy when he started running his business from his shed. Although I didn't work with him, we've always kept in touch and his pragmatism and advice 'the hardest thing in life is to sell yourself; if you can do this, you can get anywhere' helped my career.” So too did Jeremy's optimism and his mantra 'there's always a way, you just have to find it'. Tips for others entering the marine sector? “Network - this industry is still about who you know as well as what you know, and talking to people shows your personality. Once you're in it, it becomes part of you - I wouldn't trade it for anything." 8 Jeremy loves being afloat around Devon
