Making their debut at the 51st show will be new yachts from Sunseeker, Fairline and Rodman together with products from first-time exhibitors, UK distributor Celsuis UK and industrial equipment supplier, Mirka UK. This year, show organisers British Marine have extended the purpose-built marina to accommodate additional boats and on-water activities. Alongside the more than 300 boats at the marina will be displays such as flyboards and the tall ship, Shtandart, a seagoing training ship and full-size replica of the flagship of the first Russian Baltic fleet whose build was directed by Peter the Great. BM is also continuing its environmental commitments, building on initiatives introduced in 2018. This includes the introduction of water refill points around

the event and the removal of all plastic bottles at catering outlets, as well as a continuation to move away from all single-use plastics, serving only sustainable fish and recycling waste wherever possible. “Last year's show was our most eco-friendly yet and this year we're proud to be entering the second year of our long-term pledge to promote the plight of our oceans and importantly, ensure that we keep our environmental impact to a minimum,” said Dean Smith, BM commercial director. BM is also launching its Environmental Award, introduced to recognise exhibitors who have gone above and beyond to reduce their environmental impact and introduce sustainable working practices whilst at the show. The organisation also organised a beach clean in the run-up to the show. 8 The show runs from September 13-22.

Can boating be truly green? The subject of environmentally friendly boating is one that keeps cropping up. The latest occasion was a conversation I had with some sailing friends of mine regarding Greta Thunberg’s Plymouth to New York Atlantic 3,000 nautical mile crossing on board the racing sailboat Malizia II. It cannot be denied that Greta has done wonders for raising the subject of climate change and emissions around the globe and she’s achieving enormous amounts of publicity for the cause. She’s a great ambassador and spokesman delivering a fundamental message. The boat she chose for her trip was an IMOCA 60, initially built in 2015 to take part in the Vendée Globe race, equipped with a solar system and two hydro-generators so the trip can be completed emission free. The boat was chosen as it offered a zero-carbon mode of transport to the USA. However can boating ever be considered environmentally friendly? Greta herself is travelling emission free, but if the bigger picture is looked at, we do have to take into consideration the materials and emissions when building the boat – any boat - and its equipment. Also, while Greta is raising the issue of climate change, one has to think of the emissions of the journalists covering the story – no doubt flying or driving. And what happens to the boat when it reaches the end of its life? And the equipment and sails? Where does it all end? Can the marine industry – can any industry – ever be really environmentally friendly? While it’s true that any steps taken can only be a good move, the feeling among the sailors I’ve been speaking to is that we maybe need to tone down the headlines and instead be more realistic in our aims. GREATER DISCOUNTS While for many the summer has been lovely and they’ve made the most of opportunities to get out onto the water, the last few weeks have been difficult for many in the industry, particularly those in our supply chain. I’ve heard of at least one distributor that is asking for greater discounts from its suppliers and extended payment terms due to uncertainty in the market and less favourable exchange rates against the Euro and US dollar. And it’s not just distributors – some of the major boatbuilders are also asking for extended payment terms from their suppliers. Margins are being squeezed all round and it’s clear that this is unsustainable in the long term. Many will be able to offer new terms, but it does add to the worry that they face. It’s the time of year when chandleries are stocking up for the winter period with some of our major distributors planning their dealer days. Will extended credit help and incentivise the dealers to place larger orders? The state of the economy remains uncertain and looks to remain so for a few more months yet (is Brexit actually going to happen at the end of October?). Two facts remain certain – we need a successful boat show in September and we need the sun to shine.

LACK OF IMPARTIALITY CLAIMS Clipper Ventures has called on the Department for Transport to hold an independent inquiry to establish the full extent of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Marine Accident Investigation Branch investigatory teams' failure of professionalism, impartiality and honesty. The call follows an investigation into the death of Simon Speirs by the organisations. On the November 18 2017, Simon, a 60-year-old retired solicitor, fell overboard while helping to reduce sail. The yacht, CV30, owned by Clipper Ventures, was participating in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and was experiencing increasing winds and sea state in the Southern Ocean. Simon was tethered to the boat but fell overboard due to a failure of a tether safety clip. He was recovered but could not be resuscitated. He was buried at sea. CONSIDERABLE CONCERN The accident was investigated by both the MCA and MAIB with the conclusions the cause of considerable concern, said Clipper Ventures in a statement. At a meeting between Clipper Ventures and the new MCA CEO the statement continued, “it was revealed that, after a new enquiry into the actions of the MCA Enforcement Official who had initiated and headed up a number of investigations concerning Clipper Ventures, multiple errors and distortions of the truth had been discovered.” These errors, says Clipper Ventures, include the fact that the MCA claimed there was a vessel within 60 miles of the yacht that could have taken the body home for burial which the MAIB has not admitted was not true - the nearest vessel was actually 1500 miles away.

LACK OF RESOURCES In addition, Clipper Ventures says it has carried out all the MAIB's recommendations except for the MCA inspection which the company says is due to the organisation's lack of resources. Clipper Ventures therefore has had its systems assessed and approved by two independent auditors. In addition, the failure of the safety tether is being examined by the sailing industry, however, these industry learnings have been diluted by a number of factual errors in the MAIB report, continues Clipper Ventures. The statement concludes: “The MCA and MAIB investigations followed remarkably parallel courses and it has to be suspected that significant and improper influence was applied to the MAIB investigation by the MCA team. “Clipper Ventures has often complained of lack of impartiality at the MAIB, a belief now held more strongly than ever. The safety of its crew is the highest priority for Clipper Ventures and has been since the race was established in 1996.” Simon's widow, Margaret, said that his family has no

reason to believe anything in the report is incorrect. "The MAIB accident report, which took 18 months to research and write, was very detailed. The MAIB is an impartial government body tasked with making recommendations to prevent future accidents on UK registered vessels," she said. “All parties who had a material interest in matters covered by the report, including our family and Clipper Ventures, were given 30 days to respond to the draft before it was published. If these parties' representations did not result in changes to the draft report we understand that it was because the MAIB were confident of the accuracy and fairness of their conclusions and recommendations." She added: “With three fatalities plus the grounding of a yacht in the last two races, we believe that this record warrants scrutiny of the race organiser's risk management and safety procedures to ensure that no other family has to suffer in the way we have."

"For eight years in a row HanseYachts was able to grow its turnover by 9 to 15 million Euros per year," said Jens Gerhardt, HanseYachts chief executive. CANALS PIONEER, JOHN WILLIAMS, DIES WASHINGTON POST JIM NOLAN runs US based James Nolan Associates It's that time of year again when our industry concentrates on the 2020 boat show season while waiting for the big shows to start With nothing much of strategic importance happening, it is an excellent opportunity to look at how we are doing from a different perspective - the stock market. It would be reasonable to assume that most boat owners and prospective buyers have a stock portfolio of some sort. They would likely be aware of quoted boat companies. Here is what the market shows about four of the better-known boat builders and brokerage companies as of the close of business on August 9 2019. Brunswick: High U$69.82 52 Low $41.02 Current $47.99 MarineMax: High $26.11 Low $13.73 Current $14.76 Malibu Boats: High $59.57 Low $27.05 Current $27.16 MasterCraft Boat Holdings: High $39.50 Low $14.47 Current $14.49 All of them are trading near their 52-week lows. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal headlined 'Boat Stocks Battered Amid Foul Weather and Uncertain Economy' gave the reasons as 'Investors are concerned that enthusiasm for big-ticket items such as boats is waning. In addition, rainy weather this spring and summer may have deterred sales'. Setting aside the 'the weather did it' rationalisation it is more likely that the current political turmoil with its corresponding impact on consumer confidence is the prime cause. We will know more in a few weeks.

A champion of inland waterways, pioneer of electric boats and owner of the eponymous John Williams Boats on the Norfolk Broads has died at the age of 81. Initially training as a carpenter within the building industry in Shrewsbury, John Williams joined the Shropshire Union Cruisers at Norbury Junction becoming responsible for fit-outs. Canal holidays were starting to become popular and Shropshire Union Cruisers was well known for its custom-built boats and service. John played a key role in establishing Shropshire Union Cruisers' standards of construction and operation and presented the company on the then trade body, the Association of Pleasure Craft

ADRIAN BEVIN Chronicles. After reading this book I very nearly sailed off over the horizon. How I got into this industry... I've been actively sailing since the age of eight and progressed to Mirror dinghies at age 11. I then moved on to dinghy racing in Paignton sailing a range of dinghies including Fireballs before starting offshore sailing and racing from Brixham - I was fortunate to have the opportunity to compete in the Rolex Fastnet. Best advice I've ever received... Successful people surround themselves with successful people. You should really read... Jason Fox, Battle Scars: A Story of War and All That Follows. A truly inspirational read. Also Ken Duxbury's Classic of Open Boat Cruising: The Lugworm

and Haylett before moving to The Staithe in Stalham where he opened his eponymous boatyard, building, restoring and servicing classic Broads sailing yachts. The Museum of the Broads, situated nearby, will take over his yard. Paul Wagstaffe, former chief executive of British Marine and friend, paid tribute. “He was very much a character but a complete professional. “His office door was always open with a queue of people looking for advice." John was also an innovator, becoming involved with the Electric Boat Association and working with naval architect, Andrew Wolstenholme, in developing trailable electric-powered cabin launches. “John was a true and loyal friend and the boating industry has lost a much respected boatbuilder and innovator,” added Paul.

One thing the industry needs less of is... Barriers to participation. We still suffer from too many barriers to entry and participation in the marine industry. Some may just be perceived barriers, but we really need to work on encouraging and engaging more widely. Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... “It can't be done.” The truth is there is always a way. Best place I've been... I have travelled far and wide and I'm fortunate to live and work in South Devon. Despite all the stunning places I've visited, I believe you cannot beat the south west coast and the walk from Torcross to Start Point is a personal favourite.

Don't worry about... Failing. To quote Elon Musk, “Failure is an option here. If things are not failing, you are not innovating enough.” Favourite meal... Mussels and chips, with a glass of cider. One thing I couldn't live without... The sea. How I cope with stress... Escape out to sea and go sailing. Something about you that people might be surprised by... I'm fortunate enough to have encountered many varied experiences in my life and I expect to be faced with even more that might surprise me. Through an online questionnaire, the Marine Industry Salary Survey 2019 is asking both employees and employers to share information on remuneration and recruitment practices. The analysed data will be published and all participating employers will receive a report of the survey's complete findings. The results will highlight market rates for specific roles, the positions that present the most significant recruitment challenge, and help ensure fair salaries for staff. The survey also explores job satisfaction and whether skills are transferable across industries.

Social media is as popular as ever, but the landscape has shifted considerably over the past ten years and it's important to align your marine business with this new age. Privacy scandals are continuing to test user trust. Even if your brand has a strong social media presence, this may not be enough to convince your audience you are legitimate and not out to steal their data! Social media advertising should be a key part of your strategy, but also look to create a trustworthy organic presence - nothing is more imperative in an age of instant distrust. Similarly, the rise of 'fake news' is adding to this overall sense of distrust. Brands should prioritise finding new ways to generate trust online. Link to well-known and credible resources, speak up about important issues that are relevant to your brand and act ethically and honestly, showing a genuine presence in an era of pretences. Another aspect marketers should consider is the safeguarding of children. Social media is already linked to growing mental health issues, with online content blamed for causing rising levels of unhappiness in young people. We must think carefully about how our branded content might impact a young and impressionable audience and strive to create positive campaigns that boost self-esteem and celebrate our differences. Above all else, brands today need to be authentic and offer relevant, valuable and honest content in order to maintain trust with consumers.

ELG Carbon Fibre is working with British America's Cup challenger, INEOS Team UK to ensure sustainable materials and practices are incorporated into the build programme for the 2121 event. ELG has been a technical supplier to the team since the campaign began in 2018 and since then has processed 1000kg of carbon manufacturing waste and end-of-use parts for the British challengers. “The reuse of carbon fibre products is a real game changer,” said team naval architect Alan Boot. “We are diverting waste away from landfill and closing the loop in our production methods wherever possible. “ELG's products have fitted seamlessly into our manufacturing processes which demonstrates how successfully these materials can be in a range of

commercial markets.” From ELG's facility in the West Midlands, INEOS Team UK's recovered fibres have been converted into milled and chopped products to make thermoset and thermoplastic compounds and non-woven mats. The reprocessed products have been used to

manufacture composite structures during the production of the AC75 boat that will compete in Auckland in 2021. These include two cradles to support the AC75 during transit as well as the hull and deck moulds. “ELG's recycled carbon fibre products are helping to

BUSINESSMATTERS GWENDOLINE DAVIES: Head of Commercial Dispute Resolution, Walker Morris

ONLINE PRICING AND UNFAIR PRACTICES

THE LAW The Consumer Protection Regulations (CPRs) were introduced in 2008 to implement the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive into UK legislation and prohibit businesses from engaging in unfair commercial practices in their dealings with consumers. The regulations include, for example, giving false or misleading information; failing to give material information; exerting undue pressure on consumers; or engaging in any of the 31 specific banned practices listed in Schedule 1 to the CPRs. Crucially, consumers are not only those people who actually buy from or pay a business - they also include anyone who is a prospective customer.

Credit: Walker Morris

In a recently publicised case, Signet Trading Ltd, the owner of high street jeweller H Samuel, was fined for providing misleading pricing information online. The case drew attention to what retailers can and can't do when it comes to posting prices. In detail, it is a breach of the CPRs to give information to consumers that is misleading to a material degree; relates to one or more pieces of information which consumers are likely to take into account when reaching a buying decision (such as the nature of a product or service, specification, price, locality, sales service, terms of sale, incentives or other aspect or characteristic of the product/service) and causes, or is likely, to cause the consumer to make a different buying decision. For the purposes of the law, information might be misleading because it contains false information, because it is deceptive or likely to deceive a consumer even if, strictly, it is factually correct. This includes

information which is given verbally, in writing or visually. Giving false or misleading information under the CPRs also specifically includes any commercial practice or marketing which creates confusion with competitors' products or services and advertising that the retailer is bound by any code of conduct but is not adhering to that code. The CPRs require businesses to be proactive. They impose a duty to disclose material information that a consumer needs to make an informed decision. A common trap for the unwary is that liability for misleading by omission cannot be avoided if the retailer does not know what it should know and has taken no reasonable steps to find out. The CPRs also prohibit

commercial practices which intimidate or exploit consumers; which restrict or are likely to restrict how they act or make choices; utilise harassment, coercion or undue influence and/or which significantly impair or limit or are likely to impair or limit a consumer's freedom of choice. Finally, the CPRs place a general prohibition on commercial practices where a business fails to act in a professionally diligent manner in accordance with honest market practice and/or good faith and they list, at Schedule 1, 31 specific 'banned practices'. There is no defence if a retailer knowingly or recklessly allows its or its employees' conduct to fall below honest and professionally diligent standards.

PRACTICAL STEPS If trouble does arise, there are tools that can be deployed in defence: Initially, consider if the complaint is time-barred. There is an applicable limitation period which provides that no prosecution can be brought more than three years after an offence was committed or one year after the discovery or report to trading standards, whichever is the earlier. Secondly, look to see if a complaint be negotiated away. If it can, note that negotiating a settlement with a consumer complainant may not, of itself, prevent a prosecution and it may not guarantee confidentiality. Treat every customer and potential complainant fairly, politely and professionally and be honest and open in all dealings so as to foster good relationships. Good customer relations can avoid or quickly resolve complaints and can help to avoid reports to the authorities. If none of these steps work, then consider whether a due diligence defence can be raised.

BREXIT PAUL GULLETT: Wave International MD

UK MANUFACTURING IS KNOWN FOR ITS QUALITY Paul Gullett, Wave International MD, a designer and manufacturer of marine filtration systems, says that although the past three years have seen uncertain times he remains optimistic for the future now that some form of decision has been made. “As manufacturers, suppliers and exporters of mainly niche, innovative, eco products in a growing environmentally aware marine sector with increasing

14 | SEPTEMBER 2019

legislation globally, our products are going to be in demand within and outside of the EU,” he says. He thinks that UK manufacturing and services are known for quality and that non-EU countries will recognise this leading to opportunities post Brexit. Interestingly, Paul says that since the referendum business has improved significantly, while some of that is due to new products, he is sure that the

devaluation of the pound has helped too. “Costs have been stable but if there is further, significant, devaluation of the pound then raw material and component prices could rise, then of course there are import/export tariffs which may add to costs.” NERVOUS CUSTOMERS He says that the company is presently looking to increase manufacturing capability “which would mean added

factory space and workforce here in the UK.” Some customers are more nervous than others, Paul believes. He says that most of this sentiment comes from the UK, “which is natural I guess.” He adds that his EU distributors and agents are not thinking that sales will be affected after Brexit, so Wave is now increasing marketing efforts and intelligence gathering in the EU as well as elsewhere. For Paul, business is done

through personal contact and relationships in one way or another and he sees no reason that that will change in the future, especially if there are pricing and supply issues where those working relationships will become so important. He's of the view that “retaining strong sales in and outside of the EU, having a robust distribution network with good lines of communication is going to be very important for us post Brexit.”

It is also equipped with night vision and smart detection software which reduces potential false alarms.

WIRELESS WI-FI CONNECTIONS SAVE TIME As Wi-Fi has developed over the years, it has become more prominent in marine electronics. The convenience of a wireless connection is one of the main reasons why it is being more commonly used in marine electronics, explains Phil Whitehurst, Actisense CEO. “Running wires behind a bulkhead to create a network can cause challenges through a lack of space and limited areas to run wires through,” he explained. “Creating a network through a wireless Wi-Fi connection saves a considerable amount of time and effort on installation.”

8 Actisense's W2K-1 is a Wi-Fi gateway

And he added that connecting marine electronic devices to a Wi-Fi enabled device allows navigational data to be viewed remotely on a boat or ship. Wi-Fi gateways such as Actisense's W2K-1, have this ability and transfer NMEA 2000 messages from marine

electronic devices to any device connected to it via Wi-Fi, allowing an individual to remotely view a variety of vessel data. WIDELY USED “The Internet of Things (IoT) allows for ship-to-shore viewing of vessel data and

overcomes the range restrictions of Wi-Fi,” said Phil. “Data shared on the IoT can then be analysed anywhere in the world.” However, although Wi-Fi is becoming widely used in marine electronics, there is still a necessity for hardwired networks. “Standards such as NMEA 2000 are much quicker at reacting to commands and more reliable than Wi-Fi essential for high reliability data such as throttle command and alarm systems. “That's why it is important to combine the convenience of Wi-Fi and the 100% reliability of wired networks using Wi-Fi gateways,” concluded Phil.

"The IC-SAT100 will be a perfect communication tool for governments, military forces, humanitarian, multinational, energyexploration organisation plus any user that need communication in remote, isolated areas or for emergency assistance where terrestrial communication does not exist." The delay is roughly 500 milliseconds and the IC-SAT100 also features AES 256 encryption providing extra security in communication. Icom has also introduced the VE-PG4, a radio-over-IP gateway that is based on LTE technology. It acts as an interconnection to various devices including PMR, LTE/PoC Radio, IP phones and also maritime and aviation radio.

GOOD LOOKING DECKS ARE ADMIRED

Marine Components International (MCI) is the UK and European distributor for the Groco range of bronze valves manufactured in the USA. MCI advises that all ball valves should be flushed with fresh water to remove any salt residue, opened and closed to ensure they function properly and then greased. “Laying your boat up means you can check the valves, known as seacocks, to ensure they are in proper working order and look for any signs of corrosion,” says MD Andy Scott. “If the product is brass and there is any 'pinking' this indicates corrosion and you should replace it before the next boating season. Check that the ball, particularly if made of chromed brass, does not have any damage to the chrome plating. If it does, it is likely to corrode quickly and you should replace the ball valve." MCI recommends using a bronze valve rather than brass as bronze is more durable in seawater conditions and will prevent break-downs and repairs. “Better quality ball valves should have a zerk fitting around the ball housing to allow lubrication,” says Andy. If the ball valve is fitted with a drain plug, boat owners should remove it over winter, replacing it before relaunch. “This will ensure that water cannot freeze in the valve during the winter which may cause the drain plug to split,” concludes Andy.

To prevent teak decks going grey over winter due to mildew or other growth, C-Quip recommends using SEMCO Teak Sealer. This solvent based teak finish with water-like viscosity contains pigments,

SELF-DISCHARGE IS MINIMAL Looking after a boat's batteries over the winter layup period will help to maintain performance says DBS Leoch. The company was formed from a partnership between DBS Energy and Leoch Battery PTE and supplies batteries for leisure and commercial boats. Research from the company shows modern batteries will retain 90% of their charge over the six months of winter. At 10°C a battery will only lose 20% of

capacity over 12 months. “There's no need to worry about batteries over winter,” explained Henry James DBS Leoch MD. “You also need to disconnect from any other power source unless there's a hook-up system where it's permanently connected to the mains or an adapter.” And he advised to store batteries in a dry place - in a damp environment the top of the battery can get wet and electricity can flow between the terminals.

mildewcide, UV inhibitors and moisture protection. It does not contain silicone, varnish, polymers or exotic oils and is available in three shades; Natural, Goldtone and Honeytone. It is sold in US quarts or gallons and one quart will cover approximately 10sqm of deck. “When Semco Teak Sealer

is applied the wood will look as if it has nothing on it but it won't turn grey or support the growth of mildew,” added Ian. “Seasonal recoating will ensure the teak looks great and is preserved in its natural state for many years.”

“Spending time cleaning and protecting a boat prior to laying up makes the start of the next season much more enjoyable with people admiring well preserved and good-looking decks,” says C-Quip MD Ian Cooke. C-Quip supplies UK manufactured Sleek Ecopower plant-based products which include concentrated boat wash, upholstery cleaner and conditioner, bilge cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner and lubricant. Sleek concentrated boat wash is safe to use on fiberglass, vinyl, plastic, rubber, glass, metal and painted areas. COMPLETE WINTER CHECKLIST PROVIDED Mylor Yacht Harbour offers a range of practical winter shore storage packages and all the necessary equipment and experience to safely lift boats from the water for winter storage. Its team of marine specialists are also available to help with any aspect of preparing yachts for winter lay-up. Engineering manager Nathan Percival explains, "Even though Cornwall doesn't suffer from the coldest winters or the heaviest snowfall, it is still a wise precaution to winterise an engine to protect against the cold and damp and prevent corrosion problems or damage from frost and freezing.” To keep boats safe but also accessible over the winter, there is the option to store your boat ashore in a sheltered boatyard or take a berth in Mylor's marina. The company provides a comprehensive winter checklist on its website to help boat owners prepare for the change of season while the boat is still in the water and when it is hauled out. “Many owners are happy to discuss winterisation work but also look to our experts for more technical work, such as hull and decking repairs, electronics installation and other equipment which needs servicing or repair, so it's great to be able to offer all these services on site,” added Nathan.

GENUINE PROTECTION FOR LESS 22 | SEPTEMBER 2019

When laying up a boat for winter Paul Williams of The Yacht Leg and Cradle Company says users should always ensure they have the correct size cradle for the boat. “The ground needs to be level and the mast lowered and all sails and covers removed first,” he recommends. “Once in position, use tie downs if the storage area is exposed.” The Boatowner Transportable yacht cradle is a modular design enabling additional keel base and arm sections to be added depending on the yacht size. When not in use the cradle can be broken down into segments small enough to fit into the boot of a car. Stackable cradles fold flat when not in use and the Ex Large Modular Cradle is designed for use with boat movers where boats are closely positioned together. Designed to withstand 80mph winds, ground anchors can be added to The end of season lift out is a good time to check the condition of your anodes, says Toby Biddlecombe of MG Duff. The company's marine cathodic protection systems prevent corrosion that occurs in all types of water and has catastrophic impact on boats and coastal structures. MG Duff recommends regular visual checks of anodes and to replace the anode when it is 50% wasted. “Boat owners need to ensure the anodes will last until the next time the boat is lifted and not risk leaving the vessel unprotected,” says Toby. Without anodes steel and aluminium corrodes resulting in localised pitting in areas

models are fitted with attachment points to enable the units to interlock with chain or webbing. The Yacht Leg and Cradle Company supplies ancillary equipment such as bow support V pads, heavy weather lashing kits and keel base stands.

VISUAL CHECKS ARE RECOMMENDED including the hull plate, rudder and bilge keel. General wastage of the bilge keel also occurs below the paint coating. “The impact of corrosion can be disastrous and very expensive,” Toby added. “General wastage can critically weaken the hull and localised pitting can lead to complete penetration of the hull below the waterline.” Wooden and GRP boats also suffer with corrosion on stern gear including propellers, shafts, shaft brackets, stern tubes and rudders. Using the right type of anode depends on the water

Making sure that safety equipment is ready to use at any time is vitally important. Taking safety equipment to a reputable agent for servicing over the winter while the boat is laid up is a good habit for boat owners to get into, says Dave Godfrey, service manager at Ocean Safety. “It's important to get into a routine of checking safety equipment annually. "Safety equipment that has a service date or needs components that have to be periodically replaced need to be taken to a reputable agent for servicing and getting your liferaft booked in at the beginning of the winter will beat the sudden rush in spring.” Ocean Safety offers the opportunity to book appointments at its UK-based branches so boat owners can see their liferaft being

SAILS SHOULD BE SERVICED Falmouth-based Penrose Sails provides winter servicing for sails and boat covers which includes inspection, repair and storage. Gavin Watson, partner at Penrose Sails explains: “One of the worst things for yacht sails is to leave them in place when your boat is ashore for the winter. As part of our valeting service we carefully carry out basic repairs and if we find any larger issues, we'll get in touch and discuss options for repair or replacement which will avoid any nasty surprises at the start of the next season.” Once any repairs are complete, Penrose Sails' valeting service includes removal of dirt and salt and cover reproofing if required. “The whole servicing process

goes a long way towards increasing the longevity of sails and covers, reducing the chance of future failures and ensuring there is no delay to getting back out on the water,” added Gavin. Properly designed and fitted winter covers will also add years to the life of an

BOATS SHOULD BE LEFT DRY August Race's UK-made line up of products include yacht, RIB, SUP and kayak cleaners, protective UV wax, synthetic teak cleaner and gel coat stainer treatment. Growth of mould and mildew occurs over the winter months when boats are left covered. If not properly dried and ventilated then a boat will sweat, causing condensation on the inside of the cover. “Cleaning a boat at the end of the season is time consuming but restoring a damaged boat more so,” explained Peter Wallbank, August Race sales director who recommends cleaning a boat fully prior to layup. “It's important not to miss any areas of dirt or bird foul that if left could stain the gel coat or other finishes,” says Peter. For a total pre-layup treatment August Race's Boat Bomb is an anti-mould sporicidal treatment designed to kill mould spors. SOUTHAMPTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW PREVIEW

FIRST TIME FOR MIRKA Mirka UK will launch its new Polarshine 45 polishing compound at Southampton International Boat Show 2019. The latest addition to Mirka's Polarshine product portfolio has been designed and developed by the company's R&D department in Jeppo, Finland, as a coarser and faster compound. It is suitable for hard surfaces and coatings and has been produced to provide a deep gloss finish to enable boat builders and yards to offer a high-quality end product in a shorter time to their customers. “The marine sector is a growing opportunity for Mirka, so as a brand we decided to attend the Southampton International Boat Show for the first time as part of our strategic plans to increase our market share,”

said Pete Sartain, national, sales manager industrial for Mirka UK. “We see the show as the perfect platform for our team to debut the new Polarshine 45 polishing compound.” Also on display will be the Novastar abrasives range that has a multi-hole pattern and precision coating to repel dust to avoid clogging, while offering users an aggressive initial cut, especially with coarse grits (80-100). In addition, it is wear-resistant for increased durability and its flexible backing means that it does not lose grain, even when folded. Supplementing the new polishing compound and abrasives on display will be a selection of Mirka's tools headlined by the DEOS sander. Stand J311

PROFILE

JUSTINE HEELEY DOMETIC UK BLIND SYSTEMS 8 Justine Heeley is MD of Dometic UK Blinds

As a horse-riding enthusiast growing up in Sheffield, a career in the marine industry was not the predictable choice for Justine Heeley. Even an early introduction to boating with her father, fishing in Scotland, was more memorable for the midges than as a potential trigger for her decades of success in the sector. Yet water did in fact prove to be an early theme in Justine's working life that started at Biwater Industries. Gifted with a range of talents and attributes, from multilingualism, sales acumen and people management to an insatiable appetite to learn and mentor, Justine now has a range of awards and achievements to her name. Her current job is Dometic UK Blind Systems MD, yet Justine still manages to encompass and encourage charity and ambassadorial roles while supporting company employees, the UK marine industry and women in business. RISE TO THE TOP Justine obtained her degree in business studies with Spanish and French. After a spell working for Epel SA in

“It's important to get people to work to the values of the company, make sure that everyone understands their roles and that we are now share-holder responsible. “I told everyone at Oceanair to be proud that a small company had attracted the attention of a huge Swedish corporate Dometic. We are doing well, ahead of the previous year on turnover and profit.”

Madrid, she returned to the UK, joining Biwater, where she was involved in negotiations to win contracts to manage the water supply for the Canary Islands and the water supply infra-structure at Hong Kong Airport. She started at Chemring in November 1998 as European sales manager, working on marine electronics including McMurdo distress beacons, Pains Wessex distress flares and McMurdo lights. As the company grew, the electronics and lights were sold off, with Justine going with the Pains Wessex brand to form Chemring Marine which then acquired by the German company Comet in 2005. As sales director, Justine ran the Pains Wessex and Comet brands with a

team of four salespeople. Then in 2009, Robert Hill moved to the chairman position and Justine was appointed the first female Chemring MD and the only woman MD out of the 22 operating companies. Justine carved Chemring Marine out of Chemring plc and sold it to US PE (JF Lehman) backed Drew Marine in 2012. Then, in 2013, Drew Marine was sold to Jordan Company, with Justine selected to return as MD, before her step up to CEO of Orolia UK. “I definitely grew the most when I was at Chemring. It was a really good grounding in the marine business and Robert was very encouraging and supportive of developing a diverse leadership team.

I gained a great corporate understanding and had good mentors.” NEW CHALLENGE In June 2018, Justine joined marine blinds, screens and soft furnishings manufacturer Oceanair after its acquisition by Dometic. “I had always admired the Oceanair brand and thought it was a company at the top of the maritime industry. In February this year we became Dometic UK Blinds. We had to train people, develop a five-year strategic plan and implement strong growth targets. We have 200 people working for the company with more than ten different nationalities and we also have a factory in Vermont, US, with 30 people.

8 Justine Heeley supports company employees to further their careers

PASSION TO LEARN AND MENTOR Driven by her background in sales, Justine is motivated to succeed in business by a continued interest to learn, but she also has a passion to inspire, teach and help others. She also finds time to continue her membership at Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club. “I have always been interested in companies that make things and have a purpose - such as saving people lives. “At Orolia, I was responsible for the corporate social responsibility programme, something which I have carried on here at Dometic UK Blinds. I have worked with the BMF on the membership and marketing committee and with SMI and also as an ambassador to The Sailors Society, a great charity that supports the welfare of seafarers across the globe. “As part of our CSR program, we also support Chestnut Tree House, a hospice for very ill children that gives parents some respite. “Women in business is another important topic for me. We have seven women managers in senior positions. My aim is to promote more women in engineering and to mentor my team. Sometimes women lack belief in their abilities, so I want to help women have more confidence in business.”

PEOPLE: MOVEMENTS

Chris Hill Marine Components International

Marine Components International has appointed Chris Hill as operations manager to help drive growth in the superyacht, leisure marine and motorboat markets across Europe. Chris joins MCI having held similar roles at other companies including the manufacturer John Guest International. MCI MD, Andy Scott, who took over the company in 2017, said having grown turnover by a quarter in the last 12 months to £1.35m, more investment is required in operations. “We are delighted to welcome Chris to our team, he brings years of experience with large warehouse operations at several companies,” he said. “He has already started work on maximising use of our 4,500sqft facility ensuring we are prepared for new products that we will be launching shortly.” Chris's roles will include managing logistics suppliers to ensure customers receive products efficiently. Kevin George has taken on the role of chair of trustees at UKSA youth maritime training charity. Kevin George is currently chair of Red Funnel Group, having held the position of CEO of the company from 2014-2018. He is also a business director of the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership and has a strong interest in sailing. “I have long been a supporter of UKSA for the amazing work it does in helping people achieve changes in their lives through sailing and water sports.” Kevin takes over from William Garnett whose three-year appointment has come to an end. He will continue to be involved in UKSA as an ambassador for the charity. Ben Hodgson has replaced Gareth Brookes as RYA Midlands regional development officer. Ben has previously been involved with the management of a commercial training centre - Carsington Sport and Leisure - for around ten years as well as running his own training business. He is one of a handful of individuals who hold appointments as a dinghy coach assessor, powerboat trainer, windsurf trainer and a personal watercraft trainer as well as being an active centre Inspector. “It's a personal challenge for me to bring on what Gareth's done over the past decade,” he said. “Wearing all the different hats I have, there's probably only half a dozen venues in the Midlands I've not been to, so I've got a good feel for everything that's been going on in our clubs and what centres are up to, plus I know a lot of the individuals.” Stone Marine Shipcare has appointed Fran Johnson as MD following the retirement of Don Quilliam. Fran joined the company in 1997 as an apprentice and has been promoted through various positions culminating in his becoming operations director in 2015. During his years as a service technician and later as a service supervisor, he travelled extensively, gaining knowledge and expertise in propeller repair and servicing. Don, who has more than 50 years' propeller manufacturing and service knowledge, continues to be employed by Stone Marine Shipcare on a part-time basis as a technical consultant.
