COCKWELLS ACQUIRES HARDY MARINE

Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2021, has acquired Hardy Marine. The deal will see all of Hardy's operations move from its Norfolk base to Cockwells HQ in Cornwall. It is expected that the Norfolk site, owned by Windboats which has gone into administration, will close. Cockwells hopes to create 'a number' of new jobs in the region and is looking for additional premises to make that happen. “Both Cockwells and Hardy are committed to building exceptional motor boats that deliver style, reliability, customisation and all the advantages that technological advances can supply,” explained Cockwells founder and MD, Dave Cockwell. Alongside refits, restoration and engineering services for customers both local and around the world, Cockwells is the originator of the Duchy Motor Launches. “We plan to build on the seakeeping and styling of the Hardy brand, and introduce Duchy-like finesse to some of the fittings such as Cockwells' famous joinery and cutting-edge superyacht technology,” said Dave. By 2021, Cockwells will have built 32 Duchy Motor Launches since the company launched the Duchy 27 in 2011. Cockwells plans to chart the same course with the Hardy 32 to 65 range and increase demand for these trawler yachts.

Cockwells operates from two sites, one at Mylor Creek near Falmouth and one in the town itself. It has recently increased its staff numbers from 30 to 80 and has appointed Julian Weatherill from Hardy Marine to the position of sales manager. “Having worked with Hardy clients and owners for the last few years, I am passionate about the brand and know that this new alliance will propel it forward,” said Julian.

VIEWPOINT

VIRTUAL 2020 METSTRADE

KATINA READ | Editor

kread@boatingbusiness.com

You couldn’t make it up Frustration, disappointment, disbelief, outrage – the feelings of exhibitors at British Marine’s BOATS2020 and MDL’s Ocean Village Boat Show after they were cancelled at the last minute. Earlier this month we heard of the cancellation of Cannes 2020 and also METSTRADE 2020 which is instead going to be a virtual show. And now the cancellation of BOATS2020 and the Ocean Village Boat Show. After the dearth of boat shows over the summer season and cancellation after cancellation, the two shows represented a more positive outlook on the future. OK, so we have had some smaller shows take place, primarily organised by MDL and Premier Marinas and these appeared to have had some success so many were pinning their hopes on BOATS2020. There was the initial confusion – prior to the show many were not sure of the procedures put in place and how to book tickets – particularly for MDL’s show. And the fact the two shows were to have been held at the same time only added to the confusion. BM had made it clear BOATS2020 was not going to be the usual Southampton International Boat Show that we’re used to. There were to be no attractions, no awards and limited networking. It was to have been a good start and would have helped to support the industry at a time of need. And extensive consultation had taken place with Southampton City Council. However to have it cancelled the night before, when all the exhibitors were set up, had booked their hotel accommodation was appalling. The cancellation was blamed on the City Council not wanting to risk a spike in Covid-19 cases, however the way people were notified could have been improved. Ocean Village exhibitors received a phone call telling them the show could no longer go ahead shortly after the council’s 6.34pm announcement. BM still hadn’t notified all its exhibitors by 9.30pm and those who had booked tickets received an email around 10.30pm offering a voucher towards a ticket for next year’s show. After hearing a rumour the show was cancelled, I left messages on several answerphones - BM’s CEO, BM’s commercial director, the press officer, the President and Vice President’s phones trying to find out the truth but couldn’t raise a response. The fact that it was an outdoor show, with Covid-19 precautions put in place didn’t seem to come into the council’s decision making. However it has left many companies out of pocket, some by several thousand pounds which can only compound the problems they’ve faced this year. Will these exhibitors want to run the risk of exhibiting again? Several have already told me they won’t be renewing their BM membership as they see it as BM’s responsibility. Perhaps BM should say ‘goodbye’ to Southampton and move the show somewhere else next year. There are many other locations that would jump at the chance to have so much money going into their economy. I for one can’t see the hotels and restaurants in Portsmouth turning away the extra bookings.

METSTRADE 2020 has been cancelled with organisers working to hold a virtual show instead. The show was scheduled to take place from November 17-19 in RAI

Amsterdam however the decision to cancel has been made as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic. “We have worked towards a safe and

8 METSTRADE 2020 will not be held

successful METSTRADE with great dedication,” said Niels Klarenbeek, director maritime METSTRADE. “The cancellation of the METSTRADE 2020 show has been a tough blow for my team and I, but listening to the multiple voices in the industry including the exhibition committee, ICOMIA, partners and the stakeholders this is the only right decision we could make.” And he pointed out that although RAI Amsterdam is ready to accommodate METSTRADE in a Covid-19 secure way in line with all health and safety guidelines, the uncertain worldwide situation means a high-quality show cannot be guaranteed with the usual and expected face-to-face contacts. Organisers say they are now working together with partners on different virtual ways to connect the leisure marine industry with more details due to be announced. 8 METSTRADE 2021 will take place on 16-18 November 2021 in RAI Amsterdam

NEWS BOATS2020 and MDL's Ocean Village Boat Show have been cancelled by Southampton City Council. TThe news - received on the eve of the show - is due to the rising risk of COVID-19 and growing Government fears. BOATS2020 organisers British Marine had worked closely with the council to ensure Public Health England requirements were met. “We are desperately disappointed that BOATS2020 will no longer be taking place, especially receiving the news at the eleventh hour before opening, said Lesley Robinson, BM CEO. “A tremendous amount of work has been put in and it was heartening to see committed exhibitors onsite today getting geared up for opening. She added: “British Marine has remained committed to staging this not-for-profit boat show to support the leisure marine industry and

our host city of Southampton and I am deeply saddened that it will now no longer be taking place. “Alongside our exhibitors, we were ready to open a show that exceeded all safety requirements. We are truly perplexed as to why we are unable to run the show at least until Monday in line with the government restrictions imposed yesterday.

“The global pandemic and unprecedented times mean that the latest circumstances are beyond our control. Public health and safety come first and naturally, as the show organiser, British Marine must comply with all guidance. In a statement, MDL's sales and marketing director said: “As we have done over many weeks, we are working with Southampton City

Council's events advisory committee to establish if we can open the show later in the week.â€? He added: “The company has, from the outset, strived to develop a show that oers visitors an appointment-only, controlled and safe show - specifically designed for serious buyers. This last-minute decision is devastating.â€? Both shows were due to take place from September 11-20. BM received the news of the cancellation at 6.34pm on September 10. BM says it will be communicating with exhibitors, ticket holders and further stakeholders.

This year’s Grand Pavois La Rochelle has been cancelled after organisers failed to gain an exemption to French Covid-19 regulations. The Grand Pavois Organisation Association had requested an exemption and clarification to the rule stating a maximum of 5,000 people could attend gatherings. The Association says it has been working on its Covid protocols since March and had made modifications to the show.

BSS ENDORSES BILGEAWAY River Canal Rescue's Bilgeaway filters have been endorsed by the Boat Safety Scheme. The move means that BSS examiners will automatically accept the filters meet their hydrocarbon content requirements and will no longer ask boaters for proof. “I'm delighted the BSS has reviewed its procedures but frustrated that filters are yet to be mandatory on boats,” said Bilgeaway sales director, Damien Forman. “At least this may go some way in increasing take-up and making them more widely acceptable.” Bilgeaway uses a nontoxic solution to extract hydrocarbon contaminants such as petrol, diesel or engine oil from water

8 The Bilgeaway filter is now automatically accepted by the BSS

and render them non-reactive, leaving decontaminated contents

in a cartridge which can be disposed of. “Bilgeaway has the highest environmental credentials; other filters' contents will continue to

harm the environment when they're taken to landfill, shifting the problem from water to land,” added Damien. And he explained that in the past, boaters have been required to prove their bilge filters comply with the Scheme's 'less than five parts per million hydrocarbon content' criteria. Now that Bilgeaway designers have successfully demonstrated their performance capability, a paper trail is no longer necessary. Bilgeaway launched its 10in and 20in filters in January 2019 and In March 2020, Collingwood Boats agreed to fit the filter into all its narrowbeam and widebeam vessels. A smaller midi filter was added to the range in April 2020.

customers require of marine equipment.” Barton's history dates back to 1948 when founder Ron Barton used Tufnol to develop a range of lighter and stronger blocks before turning to plastic moulding in the 1960s. In 2018 the full block range was redesigned to include new contemporary styling, lower profiles and higher load ratings. The range is competitive for everyone from dinghy sailors to cruising yacht owners.

Princess Yachts won the award for 'positioning apprenticeships as a viable career choice'. The company was recognised for having invested in its apprenticeship programme to ensure that it has a strong talent pipeline in place. SEASURE SUCCESS IN SAFETY COMPETITION Seasure has been recognised in a competition to improve operational safety in the oshore wind sector. With social distancing reducing the number of technicians permitted to undertake inspections, maintenance and repairs, a cross-sector crew transfer vessel (CTV) innovation challenge was launched using the KTN innovation exchange (KTN-iX). SeaSure's designers came up with an air filtration and extraction hood which will allow crew on transfer vessels to be seated in closer proximity, a product that SeaSure MD Graham Brown points out is also suitable for other marine sectors. “It is about how to deal with Covid-19 on wind farm crew transfer vessels, but is relevant in other sectors of our industry as well as wider post-pandemic mass

transport,â€? he said. The five finalists also include Flameskill, who oers a particle filtration head top, Entex with its portable disinfecting unit, Canary Sentinel for its early warning service for Covid-19 symptoms and Life's Shield, which is validating a UV light unit that kills viruses and pathogens almost instantly. John Ransford, knowledge transfer manager, energy, at KTN, said they were delighted with the responses. “It was a crucial problem to solve for this industry, but we can also see potential for cross-over into other transport modes," he said. "The transfer of skills and knowledge from other sectors is a key driver for the iX platform and allows the challenge holder to explore potential solutions they might not otherwise have considered or been able to access easily."

MARKETING KATE O’SULLIVAN is MD at ADPR The cancellation of so many shows has aected marine businesses significantly. Here are some suggestions for marketing your business in a post-Covid world. 8 Make a plan: Create a plan based on research. Reviewing your past boat show outcomes should shape your new approach, helping you reach the same goals in a dierent way. 8 E-commerce success: The increased trend for shopping online shows no sign of slowing. Is it possible to sell direct to your customers online? Having some element of your business that is e-commerce will help to future-proof your business. 8 Market your business online: Whatever business model you have, you can still promote your business online. 81% of searches start online, so advertising on Google makes sense. 8 Get social: If you mainly use boat shows for keeping in touch with prospects and customers, developing an online community can keep you front of mind and help reach new customers. Not just for B2C businesses; B2B organisations use LinkedIn, WhatsApp and private Facebook groups to keep in touch. 8 Content is (still!) king: Ensure your website is regularly updated with fresh, relevant content crucial for feeding social media channels and for notifying Google to index your website regularly. This helps increase your site's search engine rankings, putting you in front of potential new customers. SEPTEMBER 2020 | 7

WASHINGTON POST JIM NOLAN runs US based James Nolan Associates The current interest in boating and the dramatic surge in boat buying is driven in a large part by people who are new to boating. Many are embracing the boating lifestyle to escape COVID'S restrictions on travel, however selling to people who are new to boating is different than selling to experienced boaters. Our industry has not seen this level of entrants in a long time and so should adjust their sales approach accordingly. Courtney Chalmers, VP marketing, Boats Group, explained: “Nearly half of the consumers we see entering the funnel now for YachtWorld, BoatTrader and boats. com are new and most importantly, they are highly engaged and are ultimately purchasing boats. As this interest grows and new boaters enter the funnel, they are looking for as much information as possible to help them with their purchase. “Most importantly, they're looking for information that gives them confidence in the quality and condition of the boats they're interested in - so the more authentic and detailed the information is, the better." Courtney suggests video is one of the most effective forms - it's easily digestible and engagingly covers a lot of detail, it 'shows' versus 'tells' and it establishes a rapport between the viewer and the expert. 8 | SEPTEMBER 2020

LOCKDOWN EASING A BOOST FOR WATERSPORTS Helly Hansen has reported a record-breaking summer of watersports sales, as an increasing number of the British public head out on the water. The Covid-19 lockdown easing in the UK resulted in a sharp rise in watersports activity with the company reporting that sales of its personal flotation devices (PFD) increased threefold over May and June compared to the same period last year. Piers Barnes, general manager for Helly Hansen in the UK and Ireland said it was encouraging to see water-based activities on the rise but reminded people to stay safe. “We are equally pleased to see that the public are committing to their own personal safety and making sure they are

wearing the right kit while they are out on the water,” he said. To help ensure that people are staying safe, Helly Hansen has collaborated with the RNLI to share vital safety and technical messages with this new group of watersport enthusiasts, advising on how to buy and PFDs. The huge increase in popularity of water-based

T THEPERSONBEHINDTHEFACE DAVID JOHNSON

How I got into this industry... Weekends on the family boat on the River Thames in the 1970's led to boating holidays abroad. With the sea well and truly in my veins, my working life started with four years as an engineer in the Royal Navy. I then moved into the commercial vehicle industry, but bought my first boat, a neglected, non-running Fairey Huntsman which I completely restored over a couple of years. I got back into the marine industry joining Cummins as its UK marine business manager and 12 years later joined Halyard.

Best advice I’ve ever received... Be honest with yourself and others; empower, support and motivate others to succeed. One thing the industry needs less of is... At present it has to be uncertainty relating to how Covid-19 may affect demand for boats and products and also how Brexit may impact import and export costs. Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... I don't really object to any of them as long as they are used in the right context and not too often. Best place I’ve been... Canadian wilderness, British Columbia.

Interview by Alice Driscoll

Don’t worry about... What is in the past and did not go as planned, because it's done and enables us to learn and improve. Favourite meal... Good fish and chips and a decent pint (or three) of beer. One thing I couldn’t live without... Family and friends. How I cope with stress... Continually review, progress and reset the priorities and to take time to relax and enjoy life away from work. Something about you that people might be surprised by... I'm a trained firefighter having worked at Heathrow Airport for 18 months after leaving the Royal Navy. David Johnson is sales director at Halyard (M&I) Ltd

Boats.co.uk has teamed up with Kawasaki to become the exclusive UK distributor of its new personal watercraft (PWC) range. Kawasaki released its first mass-production Jet Ski in 1973, paving the way for the beginning of the PWC market. After a six-year absence in the UK market, the company now plans to reinforce its position at the centre of the PWC scene. “We are delighted to be working with Boats.co.uk on the re-introduction of Jet Ski watercraft into the UK,” said general manager of Kawasaki Motors UK, Howard Dale. “The PWC market has become very specialised so we took the view that to fully exploit Kawasaki's market potential, we needed to work with experts and we are confident that Boats.co.uk is the right partner for us." Trading under the name Kawasaki Watercraft UK, Boats.co.uk will introduce the new 2021 Jet Ski fleet comprising multi-seat models and the latest standup Jet Ski, the SX-R. Each new model is equipped with either a normally aspirated or supercharged four-cylinder, four-stroke specialised Kawasaki marine engine which has power outputs ranging from 150ps to 300ps. Boats.co.uk MD, James Barke, said that there had been an upsurge in boating in recent months. “With fewer people travelling due to the Covid-19 situation, we see this trend continuing. PWCs are a relatively lowcost way of getting on the water so all the signs point to a big demand in the future,” he said.

Following last month's handover of the Spirit 111 sailing superyacht, Spirit Yachts has launched its largest modern classic motor yacht to date. Custom-built to the owner's specification, the 21.7m Spirit P70 has twin MAN i6 800hp engines allowing it to cruise 1,000nm at an average of 18 knots. Spirit Yachts MD, Nigel Stuart said that the launch of the P70 represented a significant step forward for the Spirit Yachts power range. “Whilst the company's core business remains sailing yachts, we are seeing increasing demand for larger motor yachts tailored to suit an owner's cruising plans,” he said. DEFINING A BOUNCE BACK LOAN With a BBL a business can borrow between £2,500 and £50,000 to a maximum 25% of its annual turnover over a six-year period. No interest is charged and no repayments are made during the first year. For the remaining five years of the loan interest is fixed at 2.5% which is very low compared to a normal commercial loan. On top of the low cost is the ability to repay a loan early without being hit with any repayment charges. Further, there's no requirement or need to offer personal guarantees to secure the loan as it's backed by the government. The scheme is open to all - sole traders, (sole) directors of limited companies, and also those who are self-employed. But there is one snag the business must have been going before March 2020, be still running, and have been affected by coronavirus. Other criteria are that 50% of income must be from trading, it's not a business in difficulty as at 31 December 2019, it's not in a restricted sector, and it's not in receipt of another government lending programme.

BOUNCING BACK TO HAPPINESS

Just as the government has been handing out money to businesses under threat as a result of coronavirus, so it has a number of loanbased programmes to keep struggling firms afloat. One, the Bounce Back Loan (BBL), is a cracker but it's closing to new applicants in November.

All of the details are on the gov.uk website, under Apply for a coronavirus Bounce Back Loan. Seeking and obtaining a BBL doesn't remove the ability of the applicant to apply for the SelfEmployment Income Support Scheme or Universal Credit. Also, unlike the furlough scheme, directors and employees can carry on working in the business. It's also not taxable. BBLs have been very well received. According to data on smallbusiness.co.uk, the banks loaned £3.3bn on the first day with more than 100,000 businesses applying, with an average loan size of £30,000. And by the first week in August, the government released figures that stated that some 1.13m BBL's had been agreed out of more than 1.37m applications, to a

value of £34.34bn; the statistics show that more than 82% of applicants were successful. It's worth noting that applicants, once approved, cannot top up or increase a BBL. Nor can they apply for a second BBL for the same business. Thought must therefore be given to the amount requested. A natural question to ask it what a BBL can be used for. As per the rules, there are few restrictions. All the regime says is that “the business must confirm to the lender that the loan will only be used to provide an economic benefit to the business, for example providing working capital, and not for personal purposes.” This is so wide and can therefore include investment, the cost of running a business such as bills, debts and employees. Directors could also take

money as dividends. Or the money can be used as a buffer against income shock. The reality is that a BBL could be used to refinance expensive debt or even pay tax bills. WHERE TO APPLY As to where to apply for a BBL, the government's website - gov.uk - lists all of the currently accredited banks. All the usual suspects are there - HSBC, Lloyds, TSB, Barclays, Santander, NatWest, RBS and Bank of Scotland, plus the Co-operative Bank, Clydesdale Bank, Yorkshire Bank, Danske Bank, Ulster Bank and Starling. Also, there's Starling, Paragon, Capitalontap, Arbuthnot, Coutts and Metro. Noticeably missing is Nationwide and Monzo. Clearly those who already

bank with these accredited institutions are going to find life much simpler as they're a known quantity. Those who want to get funding from these banks will have to open full (or feeder 'basic') accounts if they don't already bank there. Now here's the catch: While limited companies need a separate and distinct business account, sole traders don't. BBLs generally require separate business accounts and this may lead to the need to have a fee-bearing account - only a handful including HSBC, Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank will lend to existing personal customers. Fundamentally, the chances of success are improved by applying to the business's own bank or one where the owners (directors) have a personal account in good standing. Applicants should set their expectations accordingly - with such a volume of applications it can take time to progress from a waiting list to being granted (rejected) for a loan. Partly, this is down to press of business but it's also down to due diligence checks to reduce fraud. Lastly, a rejection by one bank does nothing to prevent an application to another, subject to the need to open a new account. TO END It's entirely true that a BBL is a very attractive proposition, and one that is backed by the government. Even so, a BBL is still debt which must be repaid, with interest, if it's kept for more than a year.

BOATS2020 Following the cancellation of BOATS2020 on the eve of the event by Southampton City Council, show organiser British Marine says it is seeking clarification with regard to the reasons for the late notice of decision. BM is appealing to the Secretary of State for Public Health and the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport about the decision and the Direction under Regulation 5(1) of the Health Protection Regulations 2020 that was served to the event at 6.34pm the day before the show was due to open, with a view to understanding the decision. BOATS2020 was due to take place from September 11 – 20 2020 and the late decision to cancel has left exhibitors stunned and reeling. For those that could move their boats, this was the best alternative option – Princess, Fairline and Ancasta were quick to announce their boats would still be available for viewing at alternative venues, however for others, they were left with no choice but to pack up and head home early. “When Mets was cancelled in August, I was expecting an announcement that BOATS2020 would not be going ahead,” says Jeff Webber, MD of Davey and Co.

EXHIBITORS WANT ANSWERS

ADVANCE TICKETS When Boris Johnson made his announcement on Wednesday stating a maximum of six people could meet socially, Jeff says the show could have been cancelled. Instead the show was cancelled just a few hours before it was due to start. And the public who had bought tickets in advance were still turning up and being turned away. “It’s all very last minute,” says Jeff who was supporting Drascombe Boats at the show. “The public were sent an email at 10.35pm last night. It’s very disappointing.” And it’s not only the exhibition costs but also the hotel costs and

time out of the office that Jeff says have left him out of pocket. His feelings were echoed by all the exhibitors that I spoke to. “Notwithstanding the diligence and planning under which this new show was conceived and the fact that the Council were consulted during and throughout that process by BM makes this unilateral decision doubly disappointing,” said Colin Watts of The Boat Showroom based on the River Thames. He points out that a delegation from the Council of approximately 17 members took place the day before - Thursday September 10 at around

3pm - and that delegation was more that content.

8 Boatbuilders and dealers were quick to move their boats to other marinas

INCREDULITY “The news on Thursday evening was met with complete incredulity given the Councillors earlier visit and comments,” he says. Like others, Colin can’t understand why the show couldn’t have taken place over the weekend at least allowing exhibitors to recoup some of their costs. He points out the changes in government guidelines in recent days requiring a change in gatherings to no more than six in one place only relate to indoor activities. “Instead of allowing the Covid situation to be managed like most companies and private institutions have done in order to keep the wheels of commerce on the move, it seems that the Southampton City Council is using Covid as a reason not to although they were seemingly happy less than 24-hours before the show was due to start. So what was their reason?” he asks. “It could be said that

Covid was a convenient excuse, or even a ‘bottom’ covering exercise by who ever made the decision, all to fashionable these days it seems in local government,” adds Colin. “All perhaps too easy when your pay cheque comes not from your own intuitive and entrepreneurial toil but the safety of the bank of government.” Alex Haig of Anglia Yacht Brokerage bought an 18ft Deben Lugger and a 10ft Roach Dinghy to the show. He arrived at Southampton’s Mayflower Park around midday Thursday to set his boats up and says he received an email and phone call from show organisers British Marine at 10.30pm that evening saying the show had been cancelled.

TRADE BOOST He now estimates he’s around £1,200 out of pocket, which as he points out for a one-man band is a lot to lose. He’s already one of the many businesses that have suffered as a result of Covid-19 restrictions, though he did have a boost in trade after the

The Southampton show usually sees us through the winter. I had several clients booked in for this show. It’s vital for us to have this show to see us through. More than half my sales have come through boat shows initial lockdown was lifted with staycations helping a little. “When I took the stand, I knew there was some risk, but I expected it to have been cancelled sooner,” he said. And he says although he had a boom six weeks with people buying his cheaper boats instead of spending the money going abroad on holiday, he was hoping the show would give an extra boost to sales. For Sharon Geary owner and MD of Drascombe Boats, the decision by Southampton City Council to serve notice on the show is something she can’t understand. “The Southampton city report says Covid-19 cases are low and they don’t want an increase, but they could have made the decision earlier. Why was it such a late

decision?” she asked. “I was screwing bits to boats on Wednesday and flow-coating the back of the boat. I could have done without the hassle and done without busting a gut this week to get ready.” Luckily for Sharon, she didn’t have any accommodation costs as she lives close enough to Southampton to drive in, but she still feels it is a ‘kick in the teeth’. DISTRAUGHT “I was a bit distraught last night,” said Stephen Blake of Dynamic Sailing and consultant to Pontoon & Dock group. He’d arranged for two launches to take place at the show – one for the ASTender that was to have its world launch and the other for a new to the UK range of trailers from P&D Marine Services, part of the Pontoon & Dock group.

“It’s not easy when you’re launching new products,” he said. “All the stands are very well-spaced out with very wide gangways. People could easily have looked at the products. It’s very short-sighted.” He added: “It’s cost around £2,500 with fuel, accommodation and stand cost, in addition to the cost of buying the boats for the show. “What this show does for Southampton is immense. If I’d sat at home, I would have earnt a consultancy fee and also could have spent the money on marketing and advertising and would have sold a boat that way. It’s money down the drain.”

LAST MINUTE Silver Boats UK, there was always the possibility the show would be cancelled but he feels the council decision was too last minute and wrong. “I feel the decision could have been made earlier and that at least the show could have taken place over the weekend.” Representing Silver Boats, he was promoting the company’s new GRP range. “Silver Boats has an aluminium range from 4.5m to 6.5m in length plus the GRP cabin range from 6m to 8m that are new this year,” he said. “I’ve been a Silver dealer for three years and have had tremendous feed-

back but it’s still a fairly new brand to the UK. “The Southampton show usually sees us through the winter. I had several clients booked in for this show. It’s vital for us to have this show to see us through. More than half my sales have come through boat shows.” The exhibitors I spoke to say they have been told they will get 18% of their stand costs back. I’ve also heard the stand cost will go towards a stand next year. Whatever the situation, there are many unhappy people – not just exhibitors - wanting answers and clarity.

LEVELLING SALES INCREASE Modern boaters' level of expectation of comfort continues to increase year on year, with product innovations contributing to make boating an even more enjoyable experience. Trim tab control is no exception, says Rhiannon Read, marketing and customer support at ASAP Supplies that distributes Lectrotab in the UK, with trim tab manufacturers seeing more sales of their automatic control options. ASAP has seen sales of the Lectrotab Auto Levelling Control (ALC) continue to grow, partly because the standalone panel can be used with not just their trim tab systems, but also with those from other manufacturers, allowing boat owners to upgrade without the need to change their complete system The control is designed for planning and displacement boats from 20ft and above and using

8 The trim tabs automatically retract whenever the boat is off plane

the press of a button will maintain the required attitude, countering pitch and roll as required in all sea conditions. “As wave and wind conditions change, or as passengers move around the boat, the Lectrotab automatic levelling control adjusts the trim tabs to maintain a comfortable ride

and improve fuel economy,” said Rhiannon. The control has LEDs that provide a visual display of tab positions and automatically dim at night and brighten in sunlight. Dual control panels are available for the helm and flybridge stations with manual control available from either panel.

An internal GPS means no external antenna or network is required and for single tab/actuator installations, the actuator connects directly to the display panel, eliminating the need for an external power module box. A feedback sensor for tab position is not needed. The trim tabs are automatically retracted whenever the boat is off plane or when using the optional key switch connection. When power is switched off the tabs are retracted and the tab position is re-calibrated. Trim tab corrections are prevented while the boat is turning by the microprocessor control, preventing overcompensation. The Lectrotab range is available from ASAP Supplies, along with free technical advice.

NEW QUICK DC MODELS Quick has expanded its range of gyro stabilisers and introduced new DC models for 12V systems. The five models are designed for easy plug and play installation and are available from the X2 up to X13. “We are experiencing a requirement from owners of smaller boats for stabilisation systems, it's particularly noticeable in the 25 to 40ft boat range, with the smallest, the X2 perfect for centre console or day cruisers,” said Quick UK MD Andy Sims. “The gyro market is steadily increasing and particularly gyros that don't need a generator or secondary system.” Quick's MC² gyro is designed and engineered in house by Quick Spa. It is equipped with a mass that

revolves on a horizontal axis resulting in low mechanical stress, less friction and lower heat output. The system is air cooled and does not require water pumps or seawater inlets so can be retrofitted while a craft is in the water. “The gyros are very easy to install, there's no need for additional holes to be made in a boat; it's a very compact installation with the units fitted onto a base plate and just wiring required,” added Andy. “Units are generally installed within the main mass of the boat such as in the engine bay area but they can also be installed in a garage area or even in a forward cabin. “We survey and advise on the best place for a unit to be installed for optimum performance.”

8 Quick has five sizes of gyros in its DC range

Other features of the gyros include interconnectivity between systems through the Quick app and a fast stabilisation time. “From the time the gyro is turned on to stabilisation is under 20 minutes in most

cases,” said Andy. “Classically this is around half the time of other systems.” All Quick gyros are assembled and tested for a minimum of 12 hours, simulating maximum stress and roll.

RINA approvall for steering system Dometic has received Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA) approval and certification for its Optimus 5000 Electronic Power Steering System (EPS). In order to gain the certification, Dometic Vancouver - where the Optimus 5000 EPS is designed and manufactured - was required to provide RINA auditors with evidence to support superior manufacturing practices, quality control systems and product design. “Receiving this approval from RINA is a huge win for us,” said Eric Fetchko, president of Dometic Marine. “Not only does it raise our standing in the large yacht and commercial world, it opens up the door for us to do business in a whole new area of the marine market.” The steering system was engineered for inboardpowered vessels from 40ft to 140ft in length. The 24-volt DC system delivers on demand hydraulic power, designed to provide an OEM with savings in cost, complexity and weight. The Optimus system's design and CAN bus communication network simplify wiring requirements. A variety of steering parameters can be set to provide a yacht with 'the ultimate in sports car' steering, says Dometic. The RINA certification has already resulted in the first customer order, to be installed on an Azimut 99. 8 Dometic's trim tab system can be used with outboard and inboard craft

Greater control from Dometic Dometic launched its new Trim Tab System earlier this year, designed to give owners of inboard and outboard powered boats a higher level of precision control. The company developed the system for use with inboard and outboard vessels, as well as today's popular high-performance boats powered by single, twin, triple or even quad outboard motors. “Today's modern vessels are becoming smarter and more connected,” said Eric Fetchko, president of Dometic Marine. “With this new introduction, we've taken trim tab technology and performance to a new level for boat builders and boaters alike. This will be a true game changer for the industry.” CONTROL SYSTEM The system has the ability to connect with the Optimus Electric Steering System, joystick control and shift-throttle controls. Dometic's CAN-based actuator can also be used as a standalone component that can integrate with a boat's control system. Using the connected technology on a towable craft, wake boarders and wake surfers will be able to precisely control the shape/size of their wake by commanding an exact actuator position, rather than guessing actuator run time to estimate the position. 16 | SEPTEMBER 2020

Seakeeper launched its smallest and most radically different gyro stabiliser earlier this year. The Seakeeper 1 is designed to eliminate up to 95% of boat roll on vessels of 7m to 9m or up to approximately 5.5 tonnes. Seakeeper president and chief executive, Andrew Semprevivo, called the launch day 'monumental'. “Since Seakeeper started, this is the product we wanted to bring to the industry,” he said. “The Seakeeper 1 is the smallest, most innovative, and most efficient gyro stabiliser on the market. Today is a monumental day for us as we realise our goal to bring stabilisation to the masses.” Weighing 165kg and with a height of 40cm, the

Bennett Marine trim tabs now available Bennett Marine's trim tabs are now available for shipping following their launch at METS in 2019. The company has launched three new control systems for its range of adjustable electric and hydraulic trim tabs, a joystick control for BOLT Electric Trim Tabs, plus two new ALL-IN-ONE rocker switch controls with LED tab position indication for BOLT Electric and Hydraulic trim tabs. Andy Scott, MD of Marine Components International (MCI) which distributes Bennett Marine in Europe, explained that the new allin-one controllers eliminate a lot of wiring. "The relay module used to be in a separate box, but is now incorporated in the control unit," he said. "This means you can run the cables directly from the tab motor to the controller, without an additional connection to the relay. This greatly simplifies installation as well as minimising the installation time." In developing these new controllers, Bennett Marine had the boat builder and retrofit enthusiast in mind. The emphasis is on quick and easy installation, with retrofitting assisted by using the same footprint as the original controllers. The original four-stud fixing bolts on the ALL-IN-ONE controls have also been replaced with a single lock nut whilst the cable connectors are all plug-and play. MCI is due to show the Bennett trim tabs at this year's METSTRADE in November. 18 | SEPTEMBER 2020

Sleipner Motor has overhauled its product and service offering, putting the customer experience in the front seat. The company's review of its business has resulting in the opening of more service centres for yacht owners including possible remote access support and an improved algorithm for its Side-Power Vector Fins stabilisers. “We have primarily focused on the whole customer experience side of our products,” explained Marius Torjusen, head of sales and marketing at Sleipner Motor. “Modern customers have high expectations to the ease of use of new products and if something happens, they expect swift and easy support. This is a global trend and why we have put so much effort into the new stabiliser software which

was launched this summer,” he added. BETTER STABILITY, EASIER TO SERVICE The new algorithm now automatically adjusts to various sea conditions and includes 'intuitive gain control' which allows the captain to better control the

fins. How the fins operate at anchor has also been changed, making the boat more stable, and the new software now allows for remote adjustment and trouble-shooting. Side-Power has also opened a new service centre in Italy and partnered with new service providers along

the Mediterranean coast. “Even though we will be able to fix many things from a distance in the future, increasing the number of trained service personnel in the field, remains a priority,” said Mr Torjusen.

ZIPWAKE CATERS FOR LARGER CRAFT IMTRA expanded its Zipwake Dynamic Trim Control System products with the new Series E line of interceptors earlier this year for larger craft. The new product line evolves from the company's Series S that was designed for vessels from 20-50ft and includes three straight, three tunnel and two chine interceptors. The large, modular design of the interceptors is designed to be durable, affordable and suited for planing or semi-planing boats between 40-100ft. “The Zipwake system has been embraced by boatbuilders, anglers and boaters looking for a comfortable ride and an efficient solution to trim control,” said Jamie

Simmons, Zipwake product manager, IMTRA. “Larger vesselss have their own unique e design challenges and d the Zipwake system has been expanded to o accommodate these hull shapes.” The Series E deploys ys at a speed of 1.6in per second econd (40mm per second) forr a total stroke of 2.4in (60mm). 0mm). The tunnel interceptor's tor's constant radius curvature ture allows for mounting above a propeller tunnel. Each of the three tunnel models (R500, R600 and R800) have different radii, enabling most large boat propeller tunnels to be covered with minimal deviation between hull and interceptor curvature. Chine interceptors

help control pitch and roll motion by using the furthest outboard surfaces of the hull bottom for lift generation and roll reduction; 3D controls with a LCD display provide the helmsman with control of running trim, heel or heading. VHF radio acquires certification Vesper Marine's marine VHF radio has completed certification requirements. The Cortex radio has wireless touchscreen handsets, built-in Class B SOTDMA smartAIS transponder and remote vessel monitoring. “With the intention of completely changing the paradigm of onboard VHF communications, the development of Cortex has been years in the making,” said Carl Omundsen, chief technical officer at Vesper Marine. “We are delighted to announce Cortex has received regulatory approvals for North America, Europe and Australasia (FCC, IC, CE).” Cortex alerts boaters of collision risks, providing key information about nearby vessels and making it easy to communicate directly with them. The handset's touchscreen makes typically complicated VHF functions easy to use. For example, touching a vessel onscreen and pressing ‘call’ makes a DSC call directly to that vessel. Cortex continuously calculates crossing situations and even allows trial manoeuvres. Up to ten handsets, either tethered or portable, provide up to 85dBA of clear audio. A 10W output enables audio and alerts through an external speaker, even while handsets are turned off. Cortex includes dualwatch, favourite channels and one-handed operation via the click-wheel. Pressing the dedicated man overboard (MOB) button activates a track back mode on all handsets and marks the MOB waypoint on NMEA 2000 connected multifunction displays. Cortex also includes remote vessel monitoring through the Cortex Monitor app. SEPTEMBER 2020 | 21

Furuno Marine Electronics and Victron Energy have announced new compatibility between the TZT2BB and all TZtouch3 models with Victron GX Series energy controllers. The new interface provides monitoring of a vessel's power systems including inverters, chargers and batteries, directly from the TZT2BB display or NavNet TZtouch3 multifunction display (MFD). Furuno's NavNet TZtouch3 Command Center provides an interface for the navigator to display and control third-party equipment directly from the MFD. Onboard equipment such as Seakeeper Gyro Stabilizers, Quick Bow Thrusters as well as Lumishore and ShadowCaster LED Lighting can all be accessed and controlled from custom pages on the MFD, in full-screen or splitscreen presentations. VICTRON ENERGY Victron Energy is the latest marine manufacturer to take advantage of the ability of the TZT2BB and all TZtouch3 MFDs to control third-party equipment. With a software update to the MFD, the Victron GX Series devices can connect to the NavNet network via Ethernet or NMEA2000 connection. A custom Victron presentation on the MFD can display tank fluid levels, battery status, voltage and current as well as DC status such as state-of-charge and time-to-go. Supported models include the Victron Cerbo GX, Color Control GX, Venus GX, CANvu GX, Octo GX, and Maxi GX controllers. 22 | SEPTEMBER 2020

British Marine has remained absolutely committed to supporting the industry through the provision of an event this year. Therefore, I am delighted that BOATS2020 presented by Southampton International Boat Show Ltd is taking place. Visitors will be able to see and experience a super range of new boats and equipment, something that many have not had the chance to do this year, and I am delighted that more than 100 boats and over 60 exhibitors will be there. It would not have been possible without the support of so many in the industry and Southampton City Council. It has not been easy, but I am so pleased we were able to arrive at a solution which, while different to previous years, is COVID secure and sure to excite the industry and visitors. BOATS2020 will be different to the Southampton International Boat Show that we know and love. Restrictions this year mean that we have taken considerable measures to ensure safety, including reducing overall footfall and the removal of all social attractions and features. However, after a difficult year, this not-for-profit event offers the industry a chance to come together in a safe environment. I look forward to seeing you there. Tickets must be booked in advance at BOATS2020.co.uk.

OPTIMUM POWER IN A SMALL PACKAGE

8 Solar Technology's new solar panels are available in two power output sizes

of panels so that we can maximise the power output in the limited roof or deck space available. By designing an aero bracket specifically for the panels we've created a super smart package that not only

performs exceptionally well but looks really good too.” Low profile aero brackets make the depth of the panels and fixings just 40mm. The panels are available in two power output sizes; 120w and 155w.

The MHD panels are available in kit form with a PWM charge controller. The panels are also available on their own in packs of two. They have a 20-year cell output and ten-year panel build warranties.

New controller measures power draw Oceanic Systems has launched a dedicated NMEA2000 navigation light controller designed to control and monitor eight, 16 or 24 LED navigation lights. The 5971 controller is designed to control the switching of LED navigation lamps, monitor each lamp's power draw and measure the power of each navigation lamp. The controller complies with DNV classification rules with built in manual overrides for each channel and a local mimic panel which indicates the state of each lighting channel. It uses 12 or 24 volt primary and standby power feeds for the LED navigation lights and shows a power good indicator for both supplies that automatically falls back to the standby supply if the primary display fails.

Solar Technology's new Mono High Density (MHD) solar panels have been developed to deliver optimum power in a smaller, lighter package. Part of the PV Logic range, the panels incorporate the latest solar cell technology with the conventional silver electrical ribbon seen on the surface of most solar panels replaced with a passive rear solar cell contact. The development, says Solar Technology, means the new panels are 20% smaller and lower in weight than a conventional solar panel of the same power output with shading losses and hotspots reduced. “We are constantly looking at how new technology can improve the performance of solar as an energy source,” explained Adrian Williams, Solar Technology MD. “We've listened to our customers and end users about the size and weight

PROFILE

RICHARD HADIDA

Oyster Yachts CEO and Owner

Oyster Yachts CEO and owner Richard Hadida is literally 'living the dream'. When he acquired the business in early 2018, he knew it would be a challenge, but such was his passion for the iconic brand and its luxury bluewater sailing yachts, it was one he was keen to take on. Richard describes himself as a sailing 'late starter'. Growing up in London, his first experiences on water were family holidays and sailing lessons on the Norfolk Broads. His epiphany was around aged 30, when after completing a day skipper course, he chartered a boat from the Greek port of Piraeus to sail to a family wedding in Lesbos. “It was the most magical night's sail and at that point, I realised it would be a lifelong passion of mine. Richard went onto charter Oyster yachts yearly and then shared an Oyster 885 with his close friend and former motorsport team boss, Eddie Jordan, before buying one for himself. “Oyster is the pinnacle; the number one luxury yacht brand and impossible to emulate. When I read Oyster had gone into administration, I was 100%, heart and mind, ready to acquire it.” SUCCESSES So what career gave Richard the funds to invest some £25m in a stricken business? “Halfway through A Levels, I decided to leave college to become an 'entrepreneur'. My father and his friends were talking about how they'd made successes of themselves, despite not having an O Level between them and it made me realise I wanted to get out into the world and do the same. My mum went mad.” First stop was the job centre where he secured 26 | SEPTEMBER 2020

a role at London Zoo, at the Centre for Life Studies, looking after animals including boa constrictors, cobras and giant African bullfrogs. Richard then joined the computer firm ICL and self-taught, learnt about multi-media programmes and explored software systems. By the time he left, he was running the company's internal systems. “My vision was to launch a paperless office concept but it didn't take off. Undaunted, I developed internet-based software.” His business, Evolution Gaming, provided software for bookmakers and what started as a company in Latvia with ten people, 12 years later had over 10,000 employees. In 2015, the company floated on the Stockholm stock exchange and Richard decided to take a back seat in the business. In early 2018, he was set to acquire Oyster and return the business to its former glory. ADMINISTRATION First priority was to buy Oyster's assets out of administration, finish boats in the building stages, invest in the infrastructure (including buying the hull-building plant) and

upgrade every business element, such as IT, communications, design and manufacturing. “Oyster now owns everything, which is a great position to be in.” Richard also asked Oyster founder, Richard Matthews, to join the Board. “Richard was the brand's inspiration but the previous owners didn't appreciate this. The business lost its way from a financial, not a boat building perspective and with his input, the boats will continue to be magnificent.” Three new yachts - the 1225,595 and 565 - have been added to Oyster's portfolio and Richard says 'things are looking very positive' with a full order book for the next 18 months. In response to increased demand, the firm is also looking to recruit around 100 people across its Southampton, Wroxham and Ashmanhaugh sites. “There's nothing more exciting than watching a new yacht come out of the yard and into the water in front of its owner, and it's great to see that people who were perhaps cautious about what was happening at Oyster, but loved the brand, realise it's in safe hands and are taking the

plunge. Yachting is after all, the oldest and purest form of transport; you cannot find a more ethically correct way to travel.” DISPOSABLE PLASTIC Onboard Richard's yacht Lush, there's no disposable plastic and he makes his own water. Could his skills as a software entrepreneur, coupled with a genuine love of Oyster yachts, be the perfect combination? “Yes, I think it is. I always fight for what I believe in and I'm proud to be involved

8 Richard Hadida's yacht Lush

in such a noble industry, with a great British brand. We're building adventure machines that can go anywhere in the world.” Richard's motto is 'Carpe Diem' - an ethos he says that has got him to where he is today. He also believes every person should have a plan A and a plan B. “Although I've never needed it, my plan B was always to open a beach bar in the Caribbean. Thankfully the Caribbean's loss is Oyster's gain.
