options include outboard engines, sterndrives or jet propulsion. The Patrol 12 RIB can be equipped with detachable wheelhouse, ballistic protection, machine gun mounts and telescopic radar mast. Deck layout and seating options can be configured to fit the customers’ needs. For example, position and quantity of shock mitigating seats are easily convertible thanks to a deck rail system and a telescopic mast guarantees the best signal for the antennas and radars during operation while also enabling compact solution in low-height environment (under bridges, etc) or for trailer transport purposes. BWB describes Patrol 12 RIB as an excellent solution for the customer who requires premium quality and highly multifunctional RIB for rough conditions. 8 Find out more: www.bwb.ee

Mercator Media Limited has released the following information concerning the postponement of this year’s Seawork until the Autumn. It has become clear that it will not be possible to hold the 23rd edition of Seawork exhibition in June. The risks caused by the COVID pandemic and the uncertainty around free European travel means we have little choice but to postpone Seawork and the Marine & Coastal Civil Engineering Expo (M&CCE Expo), due to be held from 15-17 June, and Speed@ Seawork, on 14 June. We are all aware that many people and their businesses depend on Seawork and regret that we have had to take this decision. Over its 23 years it has become a vital business tool for the commercial marine industry. The team are working with our stakeholders and suppliers on an acceptable alternative date in the early Autumn and will let you know as soon as possible, and certainly by Monday 21 June which is when the UK Government currently plan to exit Covid-19 restrictions. Swedish wind farm developer Vattenfall has again selected Denmark’s Port of Hvide Sande as the operations and maintenance base, for new wind farms being developed. The two wind farms Vesterhav Syd and the Vesterhav Nord were approved for construction back in December 2020 by the Danish Energy Agency although the actual location of the wind farms has been changed after protests about their closeness to shore. Vattenfall had initially planned to commission the wind farms in 2020, but had to delay the projects after the Danish Energy Agency initiated new EIA processes. The company then changed the layout of the wind farms, locating the planned turbines as far offshore as possible whilst keeping them in relatively shallow water. The commissioning of the two wind farms is now expected by the end of 2023. This new wind farm will be close to the Horns Rev 3 wind farm which Vattenfall currently has under construction and for servicing that wind farm, the company selected to establish a support base at the nearby port of Hvide Sande for its O&M base. That was in 2019 and to construct the base they selected an undeveloped site in the outer harbour at the port. Now Vatenfall plans to expand these facilities.

VESSEL & EQUIPMENT NEWS A Dutch vessel operator claims its new multicat due to hit the water in summer 2021 will be ‘the most sustainable workboat in the market’. The 36m Acta Marine vessel, to be named Coastal Crown and currently under construction at Bijlsma Wartena shipyard in The Netherlands will be an ultra-shallow draft Multicat-type, equipped with Tier III engines to lower NOx emissions by 73%. She will also be equipped with a 300kWh battery-hybrid pack for both propulsion and the ship’s accommodation, resulting in up to 15% reduction on fuel and CO2 emissions. With this new vessel, Acta Marine will be able to support its clients to include more sustainable workboat solutions in commercial offerings and projects. This is relevant in both the offshore renewables market and for coastal infrastructure construction projects. ”Sustainability criteria are increasingly becoming part of the offshore marine value chain. With our new Coastal Crown we are taking a big step in offering our clients marine services, such as anchor handling, route clearance, cable burial, wire laying and dredging support with substantially reduced emissions “says Managing Director Govert Jan van Oord. “As a company that is in business for

MARCEL FLIPSE Orcan Energy “Waste heat is the world’s largest unused energy source,” Marcel Flipse of Orcan Energy told MJ. “We have solar, hydro, wind... but this is so simple - and it has vast potential for the maritime industry.” The possibilities are large in more ways than one: the most recent, headline-grabbing contract sees eight thermal efficiency units installed onboard the heavy lift and installation ship Green Jade, currently under build in Taiwan. Despite that the footprint is “quite small” he said: “About the size of a shower cubicle”. As Flipse remarked there’s a lot of sub-steam temperature but still potentially useful thermal energy “going up into the air” from vessels of all kinds: here, Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology can recover a slice of it by effectively working “a little like a fridge” in reverse - instead of cooling-frompower, it’s power-from-cooling. Notably, it doesn’t need particularly high temperatures exhaust and engine jacket water will do nicely. So, five years ago Flipse and his team in Munich-based Orcan Energy started working on transferring the tried-and-tested ORC
technology from systems engineering across to vessels. This posed some challenges: a ship’s engine room is a more extreme environment than usually encountered in land-based applications. As Flipse underlined, “onboard, nothing is stable, just about everything is dynamic”: the new ORC product had to withstand vibrations, shock loads and roll, yaw and pitch movements, and of course, engine room temperatures. The first order for the new Efficiency PACK came from two clean, green hybrid ferries for Rederij Doeksen, with a route around environmentally sensitive areas in the Netherlands. Delivery of the ORCs was accomplished in 2017 and an early commercial breakthrough seemed on the cards. Fate intervened. The far-east yard went bust, resurrected itself, then went under again. The boats were eventually rescued and put onboard a semisubmersible for transport back to the Netherlands, but were damaged in the process. By this time, both vessels needed extensive refurbishment. Having expended so

‘‘
much effort with little to show, “it was a very steep climb upward”, he admitted. In fact, it was another three years before the ferries finally went into service in 2020, and perseverance was necessary to keep trying to find another market opening. However, these days of careful energy conservation favour technology that can utilise alternative energy streams: Orcan Energy now has Efficiency PACK installations onboard river cruise vessels, an inland waterway barge and to prove a point about its flexibility, there are also orders for units destined for two water injection dredgers alongside Green Jade. It’s a matter of some satisfaction for Flipse that ORC technology is finding a niche in this particular market. “I believe in it. And introducing it to the maritime industry... well, it is probably my last big challenge.”

KANAL ISTANBUL TO GO AHEAD Turkey’s Environmental Minister Murat Kurum recently confirmed that the country has approved development plans for a huge canal that would run parallel the Bosphorus Kanal Istanbul is planned to run more or less north to south over a distance of approximately 25 nautical miles and it will increase the capacity for shipping to and from the Black Sea, connecting it to the Marmara Sea in the south and then on to the Eastern Mediterranean. Proposals to build a canal linking the two seas have been talked about for many years. The canal is aimed at by-passing the busy Straits of Bosphorus and to reduce the delays for shipping on this route which features sharp bends and shallows. There have been proposals for four alternative routes for the canal and now after years of discussion and research the final route for the canal has been selected and the final approvals are underway. The route planned is west of the Bosphorus Strait, and includes the area from the Kucukcekmece Lake to the Durusu region. This is on the outskirts of the city and it would be a sea
level canal with no locks. Based on the current specifications for the canal it will have a depth of 25 metres and the width will vary from 250 to 1,000 metres. Spoil from the excavation work with be used to create new islands in the Sea of Marmara. Studies are continuing about the potential earthquake risks on the waterway and the need to protect the entrances at both ends with breakwaters. Included in the project are up to five high level bridges and the development of the canal’s banks into a major logistics hub serving the Black Sea. It is expected that the total cost will be in the region of $9 million and it is likely that it will be financed by public-private partnerships. Currently the Bosphorus handles around 160 transits per day with no charge for a transit under the Montreux Convention. It is anticipated that there will be a charge for the transit of the new canal with restrictions on the size and number of vessels allowed to transit the Bosphorus in the future.

MARITIME HUB FOR MALTA The Mediterranean Maritime Hub Malta (MMH) is investing more than €20 million to turn Valletta into a hub for vessels from the maritime and oil and gas exploration sectors Located in the far reaches of Valetta Harbour at Albert Town, the first investment of €8 million went towards the preparation of the site, with a large proportion dedicated to the dredging of the basin to a depth of 10.5 metres. This dredging successfully removed pollutants from the main dock and allowed the port to accommodate larger vessels from the offshore sectors, including supply and construction vessels as well as superyachts. “Today, thanks to the collaborative work with Jan De Nul Group, Malta’s harbour can accommodate larger vessels within the oil and gas field including supply and construction vessels. This investment sets us well on the way to achieving our ambition of turning the port of Valletta into a bustling Maritime and Oil & Gas Hub,” a spokesperson from MMH commented.

The next stage of the development includes the provision of two travel lifts, one of 300 tonnes and one of 700 tonnes which will allow vessels to be lifted out and placed on hard standing or in the workshops for further work. This 5 month long project will involve creating two 45 metre long piers on which the hoists can operate and these will create two basins, one with a 9 metre width and one 14 metre width which are necessary for accommodating wider vessels. The
travel lifts are part of the second investment of €5 million that has been allocated for the upgrading works on the quayside infrastructure. These current investment projects will make it possible to move onto the next stage which will include 120,000 sq. metres of paving and servicing works upgrades, the upgrading of the sheds and equipment, to include new workshops, blasting and painting booths as well as new offices and facilities.

A geotechnical investigation for the world’s longest immersed tunnel has been completed. Fugro has completed a nearshore geotechnical investigation for the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel that will connect Denmark and Germany by road and rail. Fugro carried out the work for Femern Link Contractors, the consortium building the 18km tunnel that will reduce travel time between the two countries and contribute to a greener transport system. Michael Neuhaus, strategic sales and marketing manager for Fugro in Germany, said: “We are proud to play a significant role in this iconic project. Detailed knowledge of the subsurface soil properties has helped Femern Link Contractors to improve cost and time management during the preconstruction and design phases, and to
meet their engineering objectives.” Fugro has been involved in the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel project for the last 10 years, from early site investigation work up to the current geotechnical study. This latest phase included geotechnical site characterisation of the sub-seabed soil at both tunnel entrances and, on the Danish side, the production facility where the hollow concrete tunnel elements are being made. Fugro deployed their Skate 3 jack-up platform, a custom-designed geotechnical spread, and a specialist data acquisition team to perform core drilling and downhole cone penetration tests. The resulting data was then analysed to determine subsurface uncertainty to reduce the contractor’s and client’s ground risk exposure by providing secured geotechnical design input parameters.

WORKS IN PROGRESS
HOWTH HARBOUR DEVELOPMENTS Howth Harbour near Dublin is undergoing a transformation with the re-development of the Middle Pier plus proposals for dredging the harbour and the creation of a reclaimed area of land
Included in the contract is dredging works at the proposed quay wall face and the treatment and re-use of the dredge spoil within the structure/reclamation area Over the rest of the harbour The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and the harbour authority for Howth Harbor Fishery Centre are proposing to dredge seabed material from within the harbour. The main goal of these works is to provide better water access to the fishing, leisure, and RNLI craft using the harbour, the Government of Ireland’s DAFM said. It is proposed to reuse the material to create an area for what is called ‘public realm’ on the west side of the West Pier which will effectively create a new area of land for

At the Middle Pier, which divides the harbour into fishing and leisure areas, work on the construction of a 134m-long quay wall on the western face of the pier and associated deck area, road access, hard standing and parking is already underway. Contractor John Sisk & Sons is undertaking the construction of a rock armour revetment at the eastern side of the Middle Pier plus land reclamation at the eastern side. Included in the contract is dredging works at the proposed quay wall face and the treatment and re-use of the dredge spoil within the structure/reclamation area. The job will be finished with the installation of new ancillary services and mooring furniture.
development outside the harbour but with access from the West Pier. The volume of material to be removed is approximately 240,000 m3, and the reclaimed area that will be created will extend to approximately 4.8ha. Enhancement of water depths within the harbour area is now required to maintain safe access during any state of tide. This is necessary because of increased fishing vessel sizes, siltation, and a desire to improve the usable water area. Lack of sufficient water depths due to siltation in the vicinity of the public and RNLI slipways is also resulting in restricted access to the water for the public and RNLI rescue craft at low tide. To this end DAFM is preparing a planning application, for the proposed dredging and reclamation project.

HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY
SPECIALISED MARINE DATA ACQUISITION SERVICES Nicola Offshore GmbH, a new company specialising in turnkey hydrographic survey services has started operations from its HQ in Hamburg Working from an agile logistics and technology platform, Nicola Offshore was established to service the more complex and specialist aspects of marine surveying, including underwater object detection, unexploded ordinance (UXO), and subsea cable investigations, as well as pre- and post-dredging reports. The company is a joint venture between Nicola Engineering GmbH, a German marine survey provider with over 40 years’ experience and ProMarine BV, a Dutch workboat manufacturer. Fulfilling its laser-sharp focus of providing fast-turnaround surveys for offshore oil & gas, and renewable energy clients, Nicola Offshore has developed an advanced marine data acquisition platform based on ProMarine fast workboats fitted with the unique integrated Hydrographic Survey System (iHSS) from marine data acquisition specialist, Subsea Europe Services GmbH.
We are building capabilities to tackle the toughest survey projects that demand speed and agility to collect high quality data while meeting strict deadlines, often under extreme conditions
‘‘
Andres Nicola, CEO of Nicola Engineering said, “We have noticed a significant upturn in requests for unplanned multibeam echo sounder-based surveys especially around offshore wind farms, and are confident that establishing a team to specialise in producing high quality data in these challenging conditions is the most effective way to meet the specialised needs.”
Waterschap Scheldestromen has awarded Holland Shipyards Group a build contract for a new survey vessel. The new vessel, a replacement of their current vessel, is expected to enter service by the end of 2021. The vessel measures 15.15m by 4.90m and will be suitable for surveying along the Zeeland coast, up to five nautical miles offshore. It will be provided with two permanent magnet motors, each with a capacity of 85kW, and a variable speed generator set, ensuring optimal fuel consumption and operational reliability by switching generators on and off automatically. For its hydrographic survey duties it is equipped with both a singlebeam and multibeam echosounders. While launching as a hybrid the ship’s design takes into account future plans to be potentially converted into a battery powered full electric vessel. Building of the vessel will start in March at the Holland Shipyards Group’s yard in Werkendam.
Daniel Esser, Managing Director of Nicola Offshore added, “We are building capabilities to tackle the toughest survey projects that demand speed and agility to collect high quality data while meeting strict deadlines, often under extreme conditions. The team we have put together has the drive, expertise and experience to respond to the most daunting challenges in marine survey.” Dick Duin, CEO of ProMarine concluded, “The combination of fast vessels and cutting-edge survey technology positions Nicola Offshore as a unique resource for offshore clients that need gap-filler surveys actioned quickly and effectively. We’re looking forward to saying yes to the jobs that many would decline”.

TUGS, TOWING & SALVAGE
DELIVERY AND ORDER ROUND-UP This month’s review covers tug deliveries and orders from European shipyards and a series of newbuildings from an Ohio USA-based yard with European connections
8 Great Lakes Shipyard is building ten ice-class Damen design tugs
Med Marine is well established as a tug builder but also operates its own fleet and the Turkish yard recently transferred an ASD tug from its own fleet to Chilean multinational company SAAM Towage for operation in Ecuador. SAAM Tarqui was built in 2016 as Efesan Port, a MED-2575 class tug based on Robert Allan Ltd’s RAmparts 2500W design and follows Med Marine’s delivery of the MED-A2360 class SAAM Itza to the same owner a year ago with another MED-2575 about to be sent to the region. Med Marine offers 60, 70 and 75 tonne bollard pull versions of the marque and SAAM Tarqui provides 70tbp via Wärtsilä main engines (3,600kW total) and Kongsberg thrusters. The RINA-classed, fifi1 equipped tug has DMT towing winches forward and aft along with a Mampaey towing hook. Great Lakes Shipyard is around halfway through a tenvessel order for sister company Great Lakes Towing under the terms of a licensing agreement with Damen Shipyards whereby the Cleveland, Ohio-based shipyard is exclusive builder of the Stan Tug 1907 ICE in the US. The new tugs are replacing existing vessels being retired from Great Lakes’ fleet as part of a modernisation programme in response to USCG Subchapter M regulations and will operate throughout the Great Lakes and up into the St Lawrence Seaway. Five of the ten are currently listed: Cleveland, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, operated by two-man crews. The 30tbp tugs have hybrid propulsion systems via Canal Marine designed Logan FlexaDrive power systems and operate on electric power while idling, underway at low speeds or under low loads. Main engines are MTU Tier III, 1,000hp diesels, Great Lakes stating: ‘The tugs’ compact size and high manoeuvrability makes them ideal for the narrow waterways and low bridges that characterise harbour towing on the Great Lakes.’ It was in June 2018 that you correspondent along with MJ’s editor inspected the first example of Damen’s ‘next generation’ RSD Tug 2513 Innovation at Southampton during its European showcase tour. This opportunity for prospective clients to see the tug in action has been credited with the

order and subsequent delivery of Senglea the ninth named vessel (out of 12) in the series bearing yard number 515011 to Tug Malta, part of the Rimorchiatori Riuniti Group. Senglea features Damen Triton, a digitalised remote monitoring system that collects data including fuel, oil and water levels along with performance indicators such as power, RPM and fuel consumption from sensors throughout the vessel. Tug Malta’s new fifi1-equipped addition provides 80tbp and is fully compliant with local Maltese regulations. Turning now to orders and staying with Damen, in 2005 Ports of Jersey took delivery of the Shoalbuster 2709 Duke of Normandy. Following 15 years of service Damen has again been selected to supply a slightly larger Shoalbuster 2711 on the back of expanding requirements including supporting forthcoming windfarm projects in nearby UK and EU waters. Ports of Jersey selected this particular Shoalbuster design at Seawork Exhibition in Southampton where the first of class, now Ems Tug for German principles was on display. The 2711 is an evolved version of the 2709 where the additional two metres beam will provide extra stability, workspace, storage and space for a larger (Heila) crane. It will offer 40tbp and is due for delivery in Q4 this year. Shipbuilder Chantiers Piriou offers a variety of tugs, including its own in-house designs and an interesting such reference has been reported with the order for a 16m, conventional twin-screw harbour tug for Société Coopérative des Lamaneurs of Brest and Roscoff harbours. To be built at Piriou’s Vietnam facilities, the 15tbp tug is adapted to the client’s requirements and specified for harbour towing operations over the stern, alongside and in push mode together with deepsea towing from astern. MLC 2006-compliant accommodation is at main deck level and the vessel is equipped with ‘a new generation motorisation’ compliant with IMO Tier III regulations, other characteristics include: length 16.5m, breadth 6.56m, maximum draught 2.5m, fuel oil capacity 15m3 and propulsion from two 440kW engines with a bow thruster. Delivery is scheduled for August 2021 and it will be home-ported in Concarneau.

REMOTE TUGS A STEP CLOSER 8 The tug will be remotely controlled from ashore
Credit: Kongsberg
Svitzer, Kongsberg Maritime and classification society ABS have signed an agreement to jointly develop RECOTUG, the ‘world’s first fully operational and remotely-controlled tug’. While Svitzer states it is several years away from seeing remotely operated tugs in commercial operation, the collaboration could be seen as an important step towards a tug performing towage operations remotely controlled from an operations centre ashore. Kongsberg believes digitalisation and enhanced automation are vital for sustainability and a profitable future for the maritime industry. The collaboration brings together Svitzer’s operational experience, a newbuild tug with crew and tug-specific solutions with Kongsberg’s remote-control and autonomous technology and finally the expertise and guidance from ABS necessary for regulatory approval. Svitzer is well positioned operating extensively in the near-shore environment of harbour towage. The project is expected to run ‘for the years to come’ leading to Svitzer conducting commercial remote tug operations in the Port of Copenhagen, a natural continuation of the first Svitzer/Kongsberg Maritime (formerly Rolls-Royce Marine) project from 2017. This
involved remote navigation of the tug Svitzer Hermod in Copenhagen carrying out nontowage manoeuvres from the quayside where the vessel’s master, located in a remote operating centre berthed the tug alongside, undocked, turned 360’ and undertook a short passage before safely berthing again, Svitzer Hermod was manned throughout the trial. Kongsberg are involved in several projects
that ‘define the remote and autonomous vessel control systems for tomorrow’ this venture taking work a step further by integrating these key technologies into a new context of operation. For ABS, chairman and president Christopher Wiernicki, said: “As a data-centric organisation, ABS is a leader in the maritime application of digital technologies. As safety moves away from the things you can see and touch, to things you cannot see such as software and data, ABS has been spearheading development of next generation safety approaches that draw on our expertise as a technical integrator. As a result of this tradition of constant innovation, we are uniquely well placed to support this project, which is genuinely breaking new ground for the entire industry. Greater industry collaboration is going to be key to meeting the challenges of digitalisation and maritime sustainability, so ABS is proud to be part of a team that has such a significant role to play in shaping the direction of both.”

MAKING THE TOWING CONNECTION QUICK AND EASY Credit: Lankhorst Ropes
Maritime and offshore synthetic fibre and steel wire rope manufacturer Lankhorst Ropes has introduced Lankoloop, described as the world’s quickest and easiest towing and mooring connection. The theme when reporting activities in the towing industry generally revolves around technical developments be it digitisation and automation or advances in reducing emissions. It is easy to forget however that basic hardware and seamanship skills present since day one are still fundamental to the sector including one of the most basic, connecting towing and mooring lines. Lankhorst’s Lankoloop connection uses a simple knot and eye connection to ‘complete the connection in seconds’ and can be repeatedly opened and close if needed. Feeding it through any smooth strongpoint completes the connection. A feature of Lankoloop is that no other hardware is required with the connection replacing a conventional cow hitch or shackle. The manufacturer states that ease of handling and the ability to connect lines safely and quickly are ‘vital’ in many towing situations, particularly in adverse weather conditions and that simplifying the connection to a single openable eye ensures ‘a safer
operation without compromising on the strength of the complete line configuration.’ Lankoloop follows earlier development of the Lankonect soft line connection (see MJ February 2018) and is constructed from a twelve-strand HMPE (High Modulus Polyethylene) rope with an ‘unmatched weight-to-strength ratio’ compared with a steel wire sling of the same length and capacity. Compared to such a sling it will match the breaking strength at only 15% of the weight and typically a 44mm Lankoloop will have a breaking strength of 143.1Mt MBF. Wilco Stroet, Lankhorst ropes managing director said: ‘For both towing and mooring, the Lankoloop is a breakthrough in terms of safety
8 The Lankoloop towline connection eliminates the need for other hardware
and ease of connection without the need to handle heavy shackles, allowing single person towing and mooring connections. Lankoloop is an important development for the maritime industry that makes soft line rope connections quicker and easier to complete.’ Lankhorst Ropes was established in 1751 as a ropery and sailmaker in Sneek in the Netherlands where its headquarters is still based with a global sales and stock point network in: Canada; north and south America; the Middle East; Singapore and Australia. Within Europe it also has local sales offices at Redford UK, and Bilbao Spain.

SAAM COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF INTERTUG
Credit: SAAM Towage
SAAM Towage has completed its acquisition of 70% of fellow South American tug operator Intertug in a deal valued at US$49.7m. The completion of the acquisition, first announced in January 2020 and involving purchase of 70% of post-capitalisation shares of Intertug will see SAAM offering towing services in the Colombian market, expand operations in Mexico and Central America and gain an important base in the Caribbean where Intertug has established a prominent commercial and operating presence. The purchase will be financed through a combination of debt and corporate resources, the stake acquired via a capital increase and share purchase which SAAM states will provide an adequate capital structure to advance its growth and efficiency plans. Intertug’s history dates back over 25 years, its 25-vessel fleet carrying out more than 18,000 taskings a year. SAAM Towage is a larger operation with over 150 tugs at more than 70 ports throughout the Americas logging over 100,000 taskings annually and as well as traditional shiphandling services is also active in the offshore and LNG terminal sectors. A deeper look at SAAM indicates continuous growth since forming in 1961. After initially operating in Uruguay, by 2006 it had a

presence in: Ecuador, Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica and Guatemala. In 2014 SAAM commenced joint operations with Smit (part of Boskalis) starting in Brazil and Mexico along with two new markets, Canada and Panama
and the entire joint operation with Boskalis was acquired in 2019. In 2014 SAAM worked with Consorcio Puente Chacao providing support with construction of a bridge joining the island of Chiloé with continental Chile Two years later SAAM became part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Chile and in 2018 was recognised by Huella Chile for measuring and verifying its greenhouse gas emissions. Another milestone in that year was signing of its first regional towage contract with its first Tier III tug entering service in 2019. Seldom a month seems to pass recently where news of the partial or complete acquisition of one tug company by another usually larger enterprise is announced. The history of the industry is of course peppered with such activity, but as smaller often independent operators are taken over, each subsequent re-birth involving larger fleets and operations become of more significance with some interesting geographical realignments emerging.

ISU WORKING TO REVISE WRECK REMOVAL CONTRACTS Wreck removal operations along with their contracts and the way tendering is conducted are described by the ISU as ‘some of the key issues for the salvage industry’ and the representative group is working with international shipping organisation’s representative body BIMCO and others to revise the ‘popular and well-regarded’ wreck removal contracts. At the same time ISU is working with the International Group of P&I Clubs to revise the tendering code of practice agreed in 1998 and not updated since. Wreck removal contracts are used for traditional ‘wet’ wreck removals and occasionally other salvage work accounting for around 50% of ISU members’ annual gross revenue. Income from these is considered important maintaining the industry’s emergency response activities which, given the urgency of the situation and uncertainty of success can be risky from a business impact angle. The ISU’s high-profile line-up points to the project’s importance, its president Smit International’s Richard Janssen chairing the BIMCO group considering wreck contracts, supported by vice president Nick Sloane and executive committee members Leendert Muller and John Witte, both past ISU presidents. The International Group of P&I Clubs are central to the process and Tony Goldsmith of Hill Dickerson and Andrew Chamberlain of HFW jointly provide independent legal advice to the review committee. ISU considers transparent tender processes and contractor selection, the use of Quantitative Risk Assessment and fair apportionment of risk are key matters and speaking about the discussions, Richard Janssen said: ‘I am sure that the spirit of cooperation will prevail as insurers and salvors both serve the shipowner and must work in their interests.’ Customer client relationship is all important in the salvage and wreck removal business with Mr Janssen laying out the salvors situation: “Assessing the exposure from different angles to then jointly develop the optimum solution sounds like a logical way forward but is not often recognised as such. As several cases have already demonstrated, price is not everything. Contractors with a proven track record of wellmanaged, successful operations provide more certainty and when performance is under government and media scrutiny an efficient, clean and safe job is essential. Transparency and realistic pricing are also essential to ensure a range of contractors are able to compete fairly for work internationally and in all territories.” At the recent virtual Salvage and Wreck Conference, Standard Club’s Sam Kendall-Marsden agreed that price isn’t everything stating: ‘Salvors ought to be renumerated appropriately to support a viable, healthy salvage industry for the benefit of the broader shipping industry.’ Commenting further from the shipping industry’s angle he stated: ‘It is also worth noting that recent years have seen an increase in the

cost of wreck removal which has had an impact on P&I Clubs’ finances. The shipping industry is looking at ways to make the process more cost effective’ adding that he hoped ‘the spirit of cooperation would prevail.’ At the same conference, ISU secretary general Roger Evans said that Quantitative Risk Assessment should not be used to effect risk transfer and not be the default position at the start of contractual discussions. Resolve Marine’s Nick Sloane, salvage master with the Costa Concordia wreck removal emphasised the need for ‘fairness’ and the importance of would-be contractors getting the ‘feel’ of an operation they would base their risk assessment on. ISU and the International Group are working to revise the wreck removal contract tendering code which as mentioned has not been updated since 1998. Environmental concerns have increased in importance as authorities’ requirements become more demanding including a very different context being created for wreck removal tendering due to increasing size of vessels. ISU expresses concern that confidentiality, fairness and transparency of the process should be central to the way the contractor is selected remembering that the cost of tendering can run into six figures. Salvors and ship owners need each other and need to work together. Salvors can diversify into other related work if returns make survival difficult but the grounding of the container ship Ever Given in the Suez Canal and subsequent response by Smit demonstrates how the professional salvage industry would be sorely missed if not around with resultant financial impacts for the shipping industry.

TUGS, TOWING & SALVAGE
As the UK gradually emerges from winter we look back at activities that have kept the country’s northern towage fleet busy. When in September 2011 UK government ended its arrangement for provision of four emergency towing vessels (ETVs), strong local opposition resulted in retention of the Stornoway-based ETV, the case strengthened by the hostile winter weather experienced around the UK’s northern coastline and the region’s natural beauty including being a wildlife haven. The Italian owned and flagged Ievoli Black is currently chartered by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and during a particularly stormy weekend in late October 2020 was tasked to stand by a large cargo vessel with engine failure north west of the Shetland Isles. The tug was stood down the following day when the ship regained power and continued its voyage. The same storm led to a vessel losing containers in the Pentland Firth with 33 confirmed as lost overboard, two of which washed ashore in Orkney. Ievoli Black acted as guard ship in the area before being relieved by Northern Lighthouse Board’s vessel Pharos. The MCA’s ETV is not the only tug available for emergencies in the region of course and

the October storm saw Orkney Islands Council’s two new tugs Odin of Scapa and Thor of Scapa deployed when a cargo vessel dragged its anchor in 60 knot winds in Scapa Flow. Two drilling rigs and an accommodation platform were also in the anchorage and it was reported that within an hour both tugs had a line on the vessel and with assistance from Orcades Marine and a local pilot were able to hold the ship in position and halt its drift. Towards the end of the year Odin of Scapa and Thor of Scapa assisted a bulk carrier which suffered engine problems off Orkney. The vessel was escorted to an anchorage in

8 The steam driven, 117-year-old preserved tug Daniel Adamson is set to return to service offering short trips in the river Weaver following installation of new propeller shaft bearing by Thordon Bearings Inc. Initially, just one bearing was planned to be installed following loss of a propeller but it was agreed that both shaft bearings should be replaced with 203mm diameter SXL bearings for each shaft. Daniel Adamson is a charity supported by volunteers with a limited budget but it was considered prudent to carry out the replacement so soon after the tug’s restoration three years earlier. the sheltered waters of Scapa Flow where locally arranged assistance helped resolve the vessel’s engine problem. Moving on to February 2021 four unnamed local tugs assisted a moored vessel in bad weather conditions at Hunterston Terminal in Ayrshire. Also at Hunterston, HM Coastguard was dealing with a Mayday message from a drillship drifting without power. All the above incidents reinforce the importance of adequate emergency towage provision in the region.
8 Finnish towage operator Alfons Håkans has formed a joint venture agreement with marine construction company Merikuriiri Sea Courier Oy Ltd. Alfons Håkans has 23 years’ experience working with the Keveri family business which operates in France, UK, the Netherlands and Baltic Sea region and Sea Courier OÜ’s assets will be combined with Håkans’ tug, barge and workboat fleet. The combined fleet will include dredgers, split hopper and flat top barges, strengthened by Alfons Håkans extensive fleet of over 50 tugs and workboats along with its own barges. 8 Proving age is no barrier to service, Wagenborg Towage has given a new lease of life to its near 50-year-old tug Waterpoort with the installation of a selective catalyst reduction system. Built in 1962, Waterpoort is still equipped with its original Stork Werkspoor 850hp engine and while still going strong has been overtaken by strict emissions regulations. The modification will reduce nitrogen emissions by 85% permitting its continued use on inland waterways. As well as inland towage activities Wagenborg also has a fleet of seagoing tugs up to 60tbp, barges and a 300t sheerlegs.

INNOVATIVE TIDAL ENERGY PROJECT LAUNCHES IN IRELAND A new project, launched at the start of March, is exploring the potential of a novel energy generating system that pairs floating hydrokinetic energy with battery storage technology As part of the CASE-funded Vertical Axis Tidal Turbines in Strangford (VATTS) project, a consortium of partners including Queens’ University Belfast, GKinetic Energy, Grant’s Electrical Services (GES) and The Electric Storage Company (TESC) - will harvest kinetic energy from two market-ready 10kW vertical axis tidal turbine device deployed in Strangford narrows, Northern Ireland, and develop enhanced resource assessment standards to validate the Annual Energy Predictions (AEP) for floating tidal energy technology. In an effort to edge the technology even closer to commercialisation, the team will also explore the potential of linking the GKinetic system with cutting-edge energy storage technologies and end user demand profiles - and develop a framework for ‘specifying an integrated system to provide an affordable, zero carbon alternative for baseload electricity directly to end users.’ By removing the need for a cable connection to shore the team also expect to demonstrate how costs, complexity and environmental concerns can all be ‘immediately reduced.’ As Roisin McCormack, Co-Founder & COO of GKinetic Energy, explains, traditional subsea cables ‘are not always feasible and, depending on the deployment site, can be expensive.’ In recognition of this fact, the VATTS project is viewed as a ‘really exciting opportunity’ for the project consortium to investigate the use of energy storage technologies as an alternative for power delivery in a move that ‘could accelerate market rollout of tidal energy solutions.’ Meanwhile, Vincent McCormack, CEO at GKinetic, points out that floating marine energy solutions have ‘really come to the fore in recent years, with fantastic large-scale projects in floating wind and floating solar proving that this is more than a pipe dream.’ “With continued support, floating solutions can be a viable player in the clean energy mix and hydrokinetic energy has huge advantages and benefits it can bring to the table. The predictability of supply means power can be flexible and

reliable, allowing it to be managed in an incredibly efficient way and that is a huge part of the work that will be carried out in VATTS,” he adds. POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS Key potential applications identified for the system so far include local energy generation for remote areas with good hydrokinetic resources nearby, such as rivers, canals and estuaries - as well as ‘smart city or urban applications where land space is scarce.’ According to Roisin McCormack, a number of other potential applications currently being looked into include floating ‘charge points’ for drones, electric ferries and outboard vessels, aquaculture, survey vessels - and tying in with solar-topped canal projects and floating solar.’ “GKinetic is also a key technology solutions provider in a leading smart cities project involving 32 consortium members from all across Europe called +CityxChange - and sees huge replication potential for deploying turbines in various smart city applications,” she says. Moving forward, McCormack reveals that the first step for the project team will be to carry out a site evaluation including preliminary resource assessment and micro-siting for the turbines - in parallel with commencement of the environmental consenting process alongside local authorities. “Environmental consenting is an important part of the project, because Strangford Lough contains special protection areas and is a marine conservation zone and area of special scientific interest. In tandem, GKinetic will begin building two 10kW hydrokinetic turbines. Deployment of the two turbines is scheduled for later this year,” she says. “Deployment should be relatively straightforward thanks to an experienced team and test site that is set up for this type of demonstration. The design of the unit means it can be craned in and towed to site, up and running within a matter of hours. Challenges foreseen include limitation of testing by weather and daylight hours and how much the team will be able to meet in person as a group due to ongoing COVID restrictions,” she adds.

FLOATING TURBINES, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE SUBSTATIONS? A Basque consortium believes that the future of offshore wind power lies in the design of new floating offshore substations The project was launched in 2020, has a budget of €6.8M for the 2020-2022 period and is funded by the Basque Government’s Hazitek Programme, with the support of the European Regional Development Fund. Offshore, at depths above 50 metres, wind turbines as powerful as expected, require substations to collect and distribute the power generated. Aside from this increase in wind turbine power, the trend to make even larger wind farms to favour scale economy, and their locations pose certain challenges in terms of power evacuation. Therefore, alternatives in direct current (DC) are being assessed. WIND2GRID says these substations will need to be floating, flexible, reliable, and modular, so as to adapt to different powers and requirements. Additionally, substations are exposed to the same challenges and demands as the new wind turbines and their floating platforms: new digitalized infrastructures to improve the substation’s O&M, corrosionresistant materials that can withstand the marine environment, and the overall cost-reduction of the wind farm.
The project is also expected to contribute to improve the benchmarking of the Basque industry in the offshore wind sector. In addition, optimal positioning of the Basque marine sector within this key market is essential for its future To date, there are no commercial floating substations. Thus, the market opportunity that will be created with the development of floating and fixed offshore wind power at increasing depths is paired with the lack of developers with renowned experience. This creates a unique and unmissable window of opportunity, considering the experience in the development of offshore wind power technology that we have accumulated in the Basque Country. In fact, the two sectors involved in this project, wind and marine power, bring together over 200 companies that could benefit from this new trend in the energy sector. PROJECT GOALS The project’s goals include the development of a new comprehensive solution that includes new concepts for floating structures that are appropriate for different locations, advanced numeric models applied to studying the hydrodynamic performance of complex structures and dynamic umbilical cables. It also seeks to research on the mooring dynamics of large structures in shallow waters, and new DC and AC electric transmission systems. It will delve into specific high-performance concretes for marine structures and hybrid coatings applied on metallic components to
prevent corrosion. Finally, it aims to implement Lean Manufacturing concepts and BIM methods for large marine structures, as well as innovative systems for the repair of submarine cables to reduce O&M costs, while adapting Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality concepts for O&M optimization. In the end, the new floating substation concept that the market is waiting for will be hopefully developed. The project is also expected to contribute to improve the benchmarking of the Basque industry in the offshore wind sector. In addition, optimal positioning of the Basque marine sector within this key market is essential for its future.
8 The future of offshore wind power lies in the design of new floating offshore substations
CAPABLE CLUSTER The project is led by IDOM, which will also establish the conditions for the design and the requirements of the substation, as well as the conditions for the evacuation technology. Similarly, the engineering firm will take part in the development of the floating solution, leading the design of the topside of the substation. 5 NAUTILUS FLOATING SOLUTIONS, leader in the development of floating platforms for offshore wind turbines, will be responsible for the design of a new floating substation concept. 5 GALVANIZADOS SALA, a company devoted to surface treatments and the development of new materials, leads the work package to assess the application of new materials for offshore structures. 5 OGERCO develops concretes for different structures; whereas VIUDA DE SAINZ is a large construction company committed to R&D and focused on developing new sensors for concrete structures. 5 NAVACEL, a manufacturer of large metallic infrastructures for the offshore sector (wind and marine), leads the work package responsible for demonstrating the technical and financial feasibility of the floating substation operations for topside transportation. 5 PINE is a leader in electric facilities in the marine and offshore sectors, as well as in the energy and industry sectors. As a true O&M benchmark, the company coordinates the work package to improve and innovate the O&M tasks of offshore substations.

VIABILITY OF FLOATING OFFSHORE SOLAR POWER Equinor and Moss Maritime are joining in a unique test to explore the potential of floating offshore solar panels writes Dag Pike Norwegian energy company Equinor, which is a major operator in offshore wind, will be working with Moss Maritime to test the solar technology in the exposed waters offshore off the Norwegian coast. “We have been working on this concept for the past three years, most recently through our partnership with Equinor,” says Alexander Thøgersen, vice president of engineering at Moss Maritime. “The concept has been substantially matured, both technically and economically. The floating pilot plant will be an important step on the road towards technology commercialisation and an important arena for further development and optimization of the concept.” The planned test which is expected to be launched later this year will be the world’s first pilot plant for floating solar power in rough waters. The plan is to build a floating plant about 80 metres square with the solar panels about 3 metres above the sea surface on floats which will be established in the waters off the coast at Trondheim. The purpose of this experimental unit is test how durable the system is rather than to see how much power it can produce because Norwegian waters are not noted for their sunshine. “If can we succeed here, we can succeed anywhere,” says Hanne Wigum who is the head of the Equinor technology unit focusing on wind and solar power. Equinor has filed an application for the test to last a minimum of one year. Equinor is already involved in the production of floating solar power. One test unit is in Sri Lanka where the panels are located in a calm water area and another is on a lake in Holland where alternative types of technology are being
tested. Combined with the proposed testing in rough seas, these tests will give Equinor a clearer picture of the possibilities of generating energy from floating solar power. “We choose to perform several research projects in parallel because of the rapid growth within renewable energy,” says Wigum. “This enables us to acquire optimal knowledge about this as early as possible.”

Testing will begin shortly on a new wave energy converter (WEC) that allows the conversion of wave motion into electricity and desalinated water. Danish company Wavepiston has installed the first full-scale modules, of its wave energy converter (WEC) at the test site of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN), said Ocean Energy Europe. Silvia Hildebrandt, PLOCAN, said: “The placement of Wavepiston’s device in PLOCAN’s test site represents a very important milestone for the MRE sector. Despite all the challenges of 2020, Wavepiston overcame the difficulties and successfully completed the installation of two full-scale modules of their prototype. Here at PLOCAN, we are proud to support the development of initiatives to accelerate the energy transition and foster a blue economy.”
Wavepiston’s wave energy prototype was assembled in the Port of Las Palmas and towed to PLOCAN’s test area. The system comprises a chain of wave energy collectors stretched between two anchored buoys. The plates of the collectors move when waves roll along the system,
pumping pressurised sea water into a pipe leading to a turbine or a reverse osmosis system, in order to obtain energy or desalinated water. The current set-up is a pre-installation where the company are testing two energy collectors. The first full string with 24 energy collectors is planned to be installed in the autumn. The main characteristics of this technology are its flexible, robust and light structure, its modular design and its low impact on the marine environment. In November 2020, Wavepiston launched a crowdfunding campaign which has raised more than EU2.3m for the final phase of the development and full-scale demonstration of their technology.

VESSEL LAUNCHES
MEDIUM SPEED ALUMINIUM MONOHULL FERRY BMT has announced that its latest passenger ferry design, for Aran Island Ferries, successfully completed sea trials and has now been delivered The Saoirse Na Farraige is a 40 metre medium speed monohull ferry built to a BMT design by Cheoy Lee Shipyards in China. Niall O’Brien, Director at Aran island Ferries, commented: “We are thrilled to welcome Ireland’s largest and most environmentally friendly domestic passenger ferry to the fleet. Designed by BMT, the vessel also provides maximum comfort in all weather conditions and, with additional space for our crew and passengers, Saoirse na Farraige will greatly enhance our overall travel experience and operation.” BMT supported Aran Island Ferries from initial concept, through the tender process and finally developed the detailed production design with Cheoy Lee shipyard. BMT’s involvement throughout the project provided Aran Island Ferries with the design continuity necessary to reduce risk and ensure that the vessel fulfilled all their expectations. The vessel is the largest domestic passenger ferry in Ireland with a capacity of 394 passengers, a footprint including a spacious main deck for 306 passengers divided into two seating areas that will provide comfort onboard, and a semicovered space for 88 passengers on the top deck. The design also features a large wheelhouse with excellent all-round visibility, and a crew rest area with comfortable amenities. Sylvain Julien, Director of Naval Architecture at BMT explains: “This design is part of a growing family of medium speed vessels designed by BMT that are based on high-speed craft design paradigms with the aim of significantly reducing fuel consumption and, more generally, operating cost.” For a 40 metre vessel operating at 20 knots, a low displacement is key to achieving minimum installed power. To achieve this, the vessel was built out of aluminium while still providing a ruggedized platform suitable for operation in the Galway bay. Sylvain Julien further comments: “Despite the constraints associated with the use of aluminium for vessels that do not fall under the IMO High Speed Craft [legislatory framework], this construction material significantly improves the through life cost of the vessel while reducing the day-to-day exhaust emissions thanks to reduced power requirements.”

To complement the lightweight design approach, a new double hard chine hull form was developed and optimised specifically for operation in the challenging environmental conditions experienced on the route. The semi displacement hull form provides both excellent hydrodynamic characteristics and a high level of comfort. The propulsion system consists of two Caterpillar C32 (1081kw) diesel engines driving fixed pitch propellers which, together with the newly developed BMT hull form, enables the vessel to hit speeds in excess of 20 knots. BMT is committed to leading the way in designing vessels that lower the environmental impact, and the company continues to work towards increased sustainability by leveraging alternative approaches to ferry design.
Waste barges delivered UK vessel operator Cory Riverside Energy has taken delivery of five new barges from Newcastle-based shipyard A&P Tyne and Belgian shipyard Meuse and Sambre, following the signing of two multi-million-pound contracts over the past two years. Cory has now taken delivery of six of 35 new barges which form part of the ongoing modernisation of its fleet. The new barges will replace the existing four types of barges with just two types (20 and 30 box), adding a

POWER TO MAAS: INLAND SHIPPING TURNS TO H2 Maas is a typical inland container vessel running up and down the Rhine, but what makes it unusual is that it’s aiming at a full zero emission future It’s not taking the easier option of retaining any kind of hydrocarbon power, a refit will soon take out both main engine and gearbox, replacing it with fuel cells. It seems ambitious, but as Prasanna Colluru of Future Proof Shipping underlined: “Zero means no GHG. Not just end-of-pipe solutions which can lead you into creating more demand for a non-sustainable fuel.” That’s a very interesting argument, though admittedly that entails meeting technical challenges head on. However, the company is willing to put time and energy into forging a sustainable pathway for the industry. Onboard, the shaft of this 110m vessel will pick up the power from a permanent magnet motor connected, via a thruster bearing, to the fuel cells: these will sit in a pair of repurposed, 40ft standard ISO containers “creating one large room” said FPS Senior Integration Advisor, Milinko Godjevac. He added that while “fuel cells are still not quite an off-theshelf item” yet, the system’s basic requirements aren’t particularly onerous: additional ventilation, ducting and pipework with H2 leakage sensors, plus special fi-fi detection and response. However, while technically ready, configuration and energy management for this kind of operational profile “is still something we are learning about” he added. PEM fuel cells of the kind utilised onboard Maas have one or two interesting characteristics for inland vessel applications: they can benefit from automotive developments and, as Jogchum Bruinsma of fuel cell developer Nedstack explained, unlike a combustion engine they exhibit a ‘flat’ correlation between power and efficiency, “even at low loads”. And because FC’s work electrochemically rather than by combustion, they have fewer losses and can reach around an 80% energy efficiency. Further, they run at modest, sub80C temperatures, which means no special waste-heat recovery or shielding is necessary. However, for economy and to yield the best stack lifetime, the fuel cells will be paired with a 504kWh battery located in a separate room. So, while the vessel can move at 17km per hour (the metric rather than knots for inland vessels) on hydrogen power, when the speed drops to about 4km, the propulsion power will come from the energy storage system, recharged from the main plant via a DC bus. This still leaves the challenge of refuelling. Godjevac explained: “We are not going to try bunkering the vessel but swap out tanks in containers - it can come in a truck, making it a lot easier to get the project up and running.” However, H2 isn’t anywhere near as dense as diesel, so the margins are somewhat tighter when it comes to refuelling patterns. Usefully, there are figures from Maas’ regular transit of the 200km route between Rotterdam and Belgium: the calculations show that it will need about 500kg of hydrogen for one of the 17-hour journeys. This will be accomplished with around 300bar pressurised cylinders stacked into one, road-transportable 40ft ISO standard container. This pattern also takes advantage of the lifting capability of the cranes at the ports.
28 | APRIL 2021
While it means sacrificing four 40ft boxes in total, that still leaves the vessel with 200 teu capacity. However, according to Godjevac, “aligning regulatory and class processes is quite challenging”. The IGF code hasn’t yet been updated for onboard hydrogen, and Bruinsma pointed out “you have to move to risk-based design approval”. While Nedstack has several years of installation and operational experience with megawatt-sized fuel cells this technology is new to the marine industry - so the burden lies with the design teams. Despite all this, the refitted Maas should be in the water by the end of this year. It is, admittedly, a jump right into the heart of a new type of propulsion power. “You usually have people say, ‘we’ll wait for the first steps and see how it goes’,” says Bruinsma. “Future Proof Shipping are different: they really want to make this work.” The retrofit will be performed at Holland Shipyards, and the project has received support funding from the Dutch RVO (Subsidie Duurzaam Scheepvaart scheme), Interreg North Sea Program (via the ZEM Ports NS project), and a stimulation scheme for sustainable inland shipping from the Port of Rotterdam, which is executed by the Expertise en InnovatieCentrum Binnenvaart (EICB).

OLDTIMERS TEST TRADITIONAL REPAIR SKILLS Top of the list is the restoration of the 89m x12m, threemasted Navy training ship Gorch Fock II. Some 150 specialists worked on the 61 year old steel-hulled barque, which was refloated at Lürssen’s Berne yard using a 4,800 ton capacity synchro-lift. The ship was then towed to Luerssen’s refit and repair yard in nearby Lemwerder for final outfitting. A German Navy spokesman told MJ handover and return to cadet training was expected on May 31st. Since 2015 Gorch Fock has been at several German yards for renovation originally expected to cost some €10 million. But in 2017 the almost complete replacement of hull plating as well as deck renewal and refurbishment of the ship’s 6-cylinder Deutz auxiliary was ordered at a controversial price of some €135 million. Now also restored and berthed in Hamburg is a second historic German ship, the legendary four-masted Flying P cargo sailing ship Peking. Refit and repair yard Peters Werft said the project was “technically challenging” and coverd steel hull and rigging reconstruction and many other projects. The three-year restoration cost €38 million - all funded by Berlin - and Peking will eventually be part of a new German Port Museum in Hamburg. Built in 1911, the rusting hulk of the 115.5 x 14.3m Peking was carried home from New York in 2017 on a project load carrier. It is the second Flying-P sailing ship to find a permanent berth in Germany: sister Passat is moored in Luebeck as a museum ship. KIEL SHIPYARD BUILDS REPAIR PIER OF THE FUTURE A Kiel shipyard has built a €9 million multi-purpose repair and maintenance pier capable of handling bigger ships and future new fuel and propulsion systems, reports Tom Todd The 100 x 15m pier boasts 1,500m2 of work space and has taken a year to build at the Gebrüder Friedrich Werft. It replaces a 40 year old facility no longer capable of meeting modern demands and is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken by the 100 year old family yard. The first ship to use it has been the 29.8m German fishery research cutter Littorina but the yard has long handled ferry and workboat repair and the new pier expects many types of ship. Particularly prominent are pilot boats: the yard is close to the Kiel Canal and is the repair and maintenance contractor for nine local pilot boats.
A shipyard spokesman told Maritime Journal the yard wanted to stay abreast of and serve changing needs. The aim was to utilise and offer customers innovative new processes in the ship repair supply, components and materials chains all bundled into a single location. The Gebrüder Friedrich pier is described as the first building block in a three-phase development programme called Service Maritim 4.0 described as “a bridge into the future” for ship repair. Manager Katrin Birr said the yard was a pioneer - “developing and offering a completely different and unprecedented service to that on offer so far from conventional yards”. Demand is expected to be high and cover a wide range of activities as local shipowners switch operations increasingly

A shipyard spokesman told Maritime Journal the yard wanted to stay abreast of and serve changing needs to eco-friendly forms of propulsion and fuelling like GTL and LNG and also consider further future-oriented systems. The new pier is designed to be capable of handling ships with these new systems as well as conventional fossil, renewable energy and electric or hybrid systems. The shipyard says it is already able to handle ships with GTL or LNG propulsion. The new pier is being followed by the creation of an ITsupported repair sector environment in which data from many sources will be integrated. The German Government is putting up €2.7 million of the €9 million cost of the project under its “Innovative Shipbuilding” programme while local federal state SchleswigHolstein is providing a further €1.3million.

Photo: Bolidt
A ship that has undergone an extensive refurbishment is preparing to support Extreme E’s first electric off-road racing series. Extreme E secured exclusive use of St Helena, a former Royal Mail ship, in 2018. The ship has been refurbished by Wilson Ship Management at a dry dock at Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead, UK to prepare it for its new role as a floating paddock and base for the Extreme E Championship, taking place between 3 April and 12 December 2021. This refurbishment included total overhaul of steelwork, engines, generators, propellors, interior and cabin space. St Helena’s engines and generators were converted to allow the ship to run on low-sulphur marine diesel rather than heavy marine diesel. The vessel’s
ability to operate on a single engine at cruise speed further reduces emissions by cutting its fuel consumption. St Helena departed from the Port of Liverpool in February, sailing through the Mediterranean to Saudi Arabia, ahead of the
debut Championship race in the country’s Alula region. Resin applications specialist Bolidt supplied outdoor decking for St Helena. The Netherlands-based company installed 240sqm of Bolideck Future Teak on the ship’s aft terrace. This is a lightweight, hardwearing and eco-friendly alternative to genuine teak. With the Extreme E Championship taking place across five remote locations on four continents, St Helena will transport the all-electric SUVs racing in the event - along with the necessary freight and infrastructure - to the ports closest to each site.

BUSINESS AS USUAL FOR GERMAN YARD Pandemic concerns do not appear to have troubled Germany’s Schiffswerft Diedrich - busy as usual at this time of year with ferry and workboat repair and maintenance, reports Tom Todd The Ems shipyard reported a string of regular local customers booking in boats prior to the 2021 season. Many are involved in ferry traffic with North German Frisian islands while others are workboats operating with local shipping, waterway, offshore or port authorities. The servicing of offshore CTVs is an important part of Diedrich business and the 22m offshore catamaran Wind Force III has been among recent callers. One of three CTVs with Frisia Offshore, it underwent above and below-water hull conservation and “diverse” class repairs. Wind Force III and the 19.4m Wind Force II were built by Baltic Work Boats (BWB). It looked like the latest Diedrich work on Wind Force III, in service since 2016, was the first five year class renewal for the tender, which is powered by twin CAT C32 engines providing 23 knots. Frisia Offshore’s first CTV cat, the 22m Wind Force I, was actually built by Diedrich itself in 2013 and billed as the first German-flag offshore wind catamaran. It was also Diedrich’s first all-aluminium vessel and the yard said when it was built that it felt it would be the first of many similar newbuildings. Recent ferry work at the Ems facility has included bow thruster, propeller, shaft and rudder inspection as well as conservation on the veteran 24.29m ferry Ditzum. Another oldtimer, the 26.48m island ferry Jens Albrecht III also came for repair and maintenance as well as similar conservation and machinery and class inspection. The 45.9m ferry Langeoog IV called for much the same treatment.
Elsewhere four ferries from main customer Norden Frisia have already visited Diedrich this year. The 49.50m Frisia VI, carrying 1090 passengers, spent 12 days for bow thruster, double rudder and propeller and shaft inspection. The 57.13m Frisia IX underwent a propeller swap and DNV class renewal inspection. Owners also used the opportunity for rudder and bottom checks. The 59.88m Frisia II came in for below water hull conservation, repairs and maintenence. That 1350 passenger ferry also underwent propeller, bow thruster and rudder inspection. Finally the 59.80m Frisia I came for similar routine annual checks.

DREDGING
NEW DREDGING HEAD ‘VASTLY REDUCES TURBIDITY’ A new low turbidity dredging head that promises to make ports and harbours’ dredging activities significantly less damaging to the environment has received seed funding in the UK Cornish specialist company Lutra Marine has received investment from the British Design Fund to bring its patented environmentally friendly dredging technology to market. Lutra’s technology solves a huge problem within the dredging sector around how to maintain harbours and ports without causing damage to the local habitats, something which often results in dredging licenses being withheld or withdrawn. The team at Lutra Marine, led by Daniel Wormald, have developed a unique approach to dredging silt, sediment and rock from harbours and other marine environments. By using high-precision cutter heads the team claims it can vastly reduce turbidity and sediment being stirred up. All the dredged material is captured within the cutter head unit and is pumped safely to the chosen disposal location. Daniel Wormald, Founder of Lutra Marine said, “We have been blown away by the interest shown from harbours, ports and more recently the mining sectors. We knew we were solving an important issue around helping the harbours meet certain environmental standards, but we never expected to see such interest in the high-precision element of our products.” Lutra’s technology is incredibly important for sites of special scientific interest or where dredging poses a risk to local natural habitats. But further, the cutter heads that the team have developed also allow for extremely high precision and can dredge to within 10cm of underwater obstacles and harbour perimeters. This is possible due to the 90-degree angled sides which allow for cutting all the way to the edge of the unit. This also allows the team to cut straight, deep edges right to the bottom of harbour walls.
Damon Bonser, CEO of the British Design Fund said, “We are delighted to be supporting Lutra Marine, they bring a huge amount of technical expertise to the table and their product has been borne of frustration that all the alternative dredging solutions were so damaging to their local environment.” The British Design Fund invests in and supports earlystage, well designed, product and manufacturing businesses in the UK. The BDF works with extraordinary entrepreneurs with scalable products who are ready to accelerate growth and build long term value and thriving stand-out businesses.

C-JOB SEES CUSTOMIZABLE FUTURE FOR DREDGERS Netherlands based C-Job Naval Architects has launched an in-house developed trailing suction hopper dredger series intended to fill the gap between standard designs and fully tailored vessels C-Job’s CEO Basjan Faber explained: “We’ve noticed a mismatch where off the shelf TSHD designs will not match specific project profiles, while fully tailored dredgers can be seen as limiting itself to the type of project it can perform. Plus, any small adaptations to standard designs usually require a hefty fee. In comes the customizable C-Job TSHD series.” Modular options of the C-Job TSHD Fleet include modifying main parameters in addition to dredging operations and functionalities such as dredging depth, type of dredge pump, pump power and discharge method. The THSD series also allows for easy up or downscaling of the hopper capacity, ensuring any cubic metre size is made possible. All dredgers within the C-Job series will feature a Green Passport and Clean Design notation.
The first concept design released from the C-Job TSHD series is a 14,000m3 capacity multi-functional dredger optimised for shallow water performance. It features two extendable 1,200mm diameter suction pipes, self-unloading systems and eco-friendly features The first concept design released from the C-Job TSHD series is a 14,000m3 capacity multi-functional dredger optimised for shallow water performance. It features two extendable 1,200mm diameter suction pipes, self-unloading systems and eco-friendly features. The V-shaped hopper has eight self-emptying bottom doors in one row and four closed diffusion boxes for reduced turbulence and maximum control of trim during operation. There is a jetwater system in the hopper and on dragheads and an adjustable overflow system with anti-turbidity valve. Capable of dredging to depths of
35m, there is an option for extending to depths of 100m with a submersible pump on the trailing pipe. C-Job research and development knowledge supports the customizable TSHD series. The automation process ensures any proposed changes can be quickly checked. The system will show how changes will alter the design and whether they are indeed feasible. The company’s research into hydrogen based renewable fuels offers another possible customization element for customers. Basjan Faber added:”In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry we must consider hydrogen based renewable fuels. With technology progressing at an ever increasing rate, what is not possible now may be possible in five years’ time, especially as it becomes more readily available and affordable. “At C-Job we aim to show these possibilities in our TSHD series and share our vision of the future of dredging with our clients.”

STRALSUND APPROACH IMPROVED FOR SHIPPING
Photo: WSV Ostsee
Central handling facilities in the Port of Stralsund are now more accessible to shipping after the dredging of the east German Baltic facility’s eastern approach channel, reports Tom Todd
The 94.86m x 17.02m hopper suction dredger Costa la Luz, owned by Dravo in Spain and part of the van Oord Group, was hired in to tackle the extensive three-month job which has cost €1.6 million. The co-ordinating authority has been the newly created WSA Ostsee, the locally based representative of the Germany government’s Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV). A WSV spokeswoman told Maritime Journal the job involved the improvement of some 20 kms of the total 29kms long eastern approach channel - the Ostansteuerung. It runs from the Bay of Greifswald close to Poland to the east as far as the Ziegelgraben Bridge in central Stralsund, where the port’s most important facilities Stadthafen, Nordhafen, Südhafen and Frankenhafen are located. The WSV said the aim had been to restore a channel width of at least 70m on a depth of 7.5m and the spokeswoman added: “these parameters are the prerequisites for safe and easy shipping in the Oststeuerung”. Officials said that in the past few years the eastern channel had become increasingly silted up, endangering access to

Stralsund for heavy cargo ships. Detailing the work, WSA Ostsee construction engineer Hannes Nehls explained that land slips on the flanks of the fairway had over the years lowered the profile and water depths making transit dangerous for vessels using guaranteed navigation charts. The latest dredging work had deepened the channel and removed some 240,000m3 of sediment during three dredging project stages and in eight separate areas, they said. As well as removing sediment, the versatile Costa la Luz also transported each individual 3,700m3 load of dredged material some 35kms to an approved deposition dumping site in the Baltic. Port authorities said the expansion of facilities likely to benefit from increased handling as a result of projects like the Oststansteuerung would remain at the top of the agenda. They declared: development will continue” as Stralsund cooperates on available sites with the local state of MecklenburgVorpommern. And they noted the completion over the past few years of major future-oriented terminal projects such as the development of the Südhafen and Frankenhafen facilities.
Nominations sought for IADC Safety Awards The Netherlands based International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) is now seeking nominations for the annual IADC Safety Award. CREMYLL FERRY TO GO ELECTRIC Plymouth based Voyager Boatyard will receive funding to design and build an electric ferry that will operate on the commuter route between Plymouth and South East Cornwall, UK The funding comes from Innovate UK, a fund set up with £191 million to award to help develop innovative projects. This funding award follows after the successful conversion work on a small, diesel work boat into a 12 passenger design powered solely by electric energy by the yard. The team at Voyager Boatyard have taken full advantage of quieter times, caused by COVID-19, to focus on the development of zero-carbon, fully electric propulsion systems for the domestic passenger vessel and under 24m commercial workboat sector. It is planned for this larger, 150 passenger capacity vessel to be able to operate for up to 14 hours a day on a single charge which will make the ferry suitable for the short ferry route across The Narrows on the west side of Plymouth Harbour. This Cremyll ferry route is currently operated by Plymouth Boat Trips using diesel powered boats. Voyager Marine and Plymouth Boat Trips will be working with Solis Marine Engineering, a team of expert naval architects, to

A global classification society is helping lead the charge towards decarbonisation with its recent publication of new rules for wind propulsion systems. The new Bureau Veritas rule notation for WIND PROPULSION SYSTEMS (WPS) - NR 206, builds on pre-existing BV rules released in 1987. Now two new notations have been issued to provide the classification requirements for modern wind powered ships: WPS 1 for standing rigging and WPS 2 for standing and running rigging. Both provide load cases and coefficients for all types of wind propulsion technologies including free-standing rigs, wing sails, kite sails, and wind turbines. The new rules provide the key classification

life, wherein the rules address survey regime and maintenance requirements. Yves Pelpel, Senior Vice President Technical at Chantiers de l’Atlantique, said: “With the concept of solid sail, a first of its kind of a new generation of very large sails made of rigid panels and its Aeoldrive balestron rigging, Chantiers de l’Atlantique is offering the most advanced and innovative solution of sailing propulsion in the large ships market. The integration on-board a passenger ship of such an innovative solution is only possible thanks to the tremendous collaborative work done with Bureau Veritas on its new rules for Wind Assisted Propulsion.”

DEEPSPEED AIMS FOR LARGER UNITS Italian company DeepSpeed which has developed an innovative concept of electric pod drive is now changing its focus towards larger versions after a successful fund raising drive. Now operating under the company name of Sealence, the DeepSpeed project initially developed a rim drive electric powered pod drive system for small fast boats. After proving trials with these small units the company has announced that development will focus on larger versions that will create suitable propulsion units for craft such as patrol and workboats. The new 500kW unit, the DS780 will develop 1500Nm of torque and will produce a peak power thrust equivalent of 780hp. A smaller unit is also in development with a power rating of 220kW and a torque rating of 560Nm which will be the equivalent of a 420hp unit. It is expected that both of these higher rated units will be available later this year and with this new development it will mean that Sealence will be able to offer units to suit most fast boat applications up to 15 metres in length. Whilst the DS420 unit will be optimised for

faster planing speeds, the larger DS780 is being optimised for operation in the 16 to 24 knot range which will open up the possibility of using it on semi-displacement hulls as well as fully planing boats. This will widen the application in the work and patrol boat sector considerably but so far the company has not offered any comparison figures about the relative efficiency of their system compared with other electric propulsion units. At present the Sealence units are fixed units will no direction variation but in the longer term there would seem to be the prospect of
Now operating under the company name of Sealence, the DeepSpeed project initially developed a rim drive electric powered pod drive system for small fast boats adapting the units to make them fully steerable in a similar way to Volvo Penta’s Pod Drive. The actual propulsion unit is fully self contained and only needs the electricity supply to be connected. In the longer term Sealence is proposing to be able to offer a complete electric installation that will include expandable lithium battery packs and solar panels as well as diesel generators and range extenders all combined with a single control panel. This will allow the company to offer complete hybrid and fully electric systems depending on the application.

POWER & PROPULSION Norwegian company Yara Marine Technologies has agreed to give financial and other support to Phinergy Marine, a company that has developed container housed aluminium air battery systems. “Phoenician Energy’s use of aluminium-air battery technology for the maritime industry triggered our scientists’ curiosity. Their container battery is especially interesting. The concept taps into several recent trends and developments, such as circular economy and electrification of marine vessels. We believe this technology may have an important role to play in a greener maritime industry for future generations,” said Thomas Koniordos, CEO of Yara Marine Technologies. Phinergy licenses aluminium -air battery technology and adapts it to marine applications. The company has developed a 4.8MWh system enclosed in a 6m shipping container. The aluminium air battery actually consumes aluminium with alumina as a by product of the production of electricity from the battery. The container based concept developed by Phinergy would see the battery container being exchanged in port for a new one rather than being recharged on board. Jesper Hellström, Yara Marine’s head of research and development, highlighted,
PHINERGY GETS SUPPORT FROM YARA MARINE
8 Phinergy licenses aluminium -air battery technology and adapts it to marine applications
“Charging an Al-air battery actually happens at an aluminium production plant. You may say that the battery consumes aluminium, the most abundant metal in Earth’s crust. Furthermore, the alumina generated from the
aluminium in the battery, as it depletes, is a valued commodity. The alumina can be recycled back to aluminium at the aluminium plant, but it also has uses in other industries. Together with Yara Marine Technologies, Phinergy will move into its next phase.” “Al-air batteries have one of the highest energy densities of all batteries, with more than four times the capacity of the conventional lithium-ion battery,” said Udi Erell, founder and president at Phinergy. “Higher density means that longer ranges can be achieved, and a smaller footprint means more space for revenue-producing cargo. Aluminium-air batteries do not lose capacity when not in use, nor do they degrade over time. They are also inherently safe, with no danger of temperature runaway.” The container system is claimed to eliminate downtime that would be required for recharging conventional batteries. The consumed battery is then re-equipped with new aluminium and it is ready to go another turn.

DECK EQUIPMENT & LIFTING GEAR
HEFTY LIFTING GEAR TAKING SHAPE FOR ALFA LIFT The deck cargo ship BigLift Barentsz has recently left the Liebherr site at the port of Rostock with two remarkable, giant crane components ready for installation The white painted slewing platform, as well as the characteristic A-frame of the upcoming Liebherr Heavy Lift Crane HLC 150000, are now on their way to being assembled on OHT’s next-generation offshore wind foundation vessel Alfa Lift. With its unique combination of features, the Liebherr HLC series will be a key element for installing current and future wind farms around the world. Following their arrival in China, the slewing platform and the A-frame will be the first crane sections to be assembled on the Ulstein designed offshore installation vessel Alfa Lift. The slewing platform and the A-frame will be assembled on Alfa Lift at the shipyard of China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI) in the province of Jiangsu, close to Shanghai. When the installation of the two components is finalized, the boom will be delivered just-in-time to complete the HLC 150000. “The crane can only be assembled and installed once the vessel has reached a specific phase in its construction. Therefore, the manufacturing timelines are finely balanced between Liebherr, OHT, and CHMI,” said Gregor Levold, Sales Director of Ship and Offshore Cranes at Liebherr Rostock. “Another important element of the partnership with OHT is our support and guidance for the initial setup of the crane onboard Alfa Lift. A team of Liebherr specialists will travel to China to support this part of the operation.”
The crane can only be assembled and installed once the vessel has reached a specific phase in its construction. Therefore, the manufacturing timelines are finely balanced between Liebherr, OHT, and CHMI
‘‘
With a maximum lifting capacity of 3,000 tonnes at 30 metres and 1,000 tonnes at 76 metres outreach, the HLC 150000 is ready for a wide range of applications. In general, the Liebherr HLC series design is characterized by a small footprint. The slew bearing diameter of the HLC 150000 is just 14 metres, consequently, the crane requires little space on deck and offers more storage space. Due to the special slip ring configuration, the HLC has a 360degree unlimited slewing range. In addition, the Liebherr HLC’s foldable A-frame reduces the height of the crane as needed. “Unlike many other crane vessels of this size, the Alfa Lift will be able to navigate waters crossed by bridges. This feature reduces transit-time, for instance when the vessel enters the Baltic Sea crossing the Storebaltsbroen in Denmark,” said Gregor Levold. “The foldable Aframe provides more flexibility, which in turn leads to both operational and cost-efficiency, increasing the number of charter days and vessel availability.”
42 | APRIL 2021
For faster maintenance during operation, all components of the HLC are safely accessible via stairs and platforms. A key element of the maintenance concept is the integrated telescopic knuckle boom crane that is capable of lifting up to six tonnes. This service crane allows the exchange of the heaviest single components without the help of an external crane. This means comfortable, fast, economical maintenance is guaranteed, independent of the vessel location. “Customers for this type of crane have very high quality and reliability demands, which we can meet and exceed”, said Gregor Levold. “Our cranes are made in Europe with strong partners within the Liebherr Group as well as proven and reliable external suppliers. Main components like winches, slew bearing, and slewing drives of the crane are designed and manufactured by other Liebherr companies. This results in an independent supply chain and guaranteed availability of components.” Alfa Lift will start operating in the North Sea in 2022 with the HLC 150000 onboard. The vessel’s first project will be the construction of Dogger Bank A windfarm.

BESPOKE RUNNING LINE MONITORS FOR VESSEL 8 One of the DLM Running Line Monitors (RLM), being calibrated using a 76mm wire rope sling, the same diameter as installed on the vessel mooring winches
Photo: DLM
Eight bespoke Running Line Monitors (RLMs) have been provided for a new next generation, 5,000t capacity floating installation crane vessel currently being built in China. Dynamic Load Monitoring (UK) Ltd. (DLM) provided the RLMs to monitor the tension on mooring winches aboard Jan de Nul’s 236.8m-long Les Alizés, due to be completed in 2022. DLM delivered the RLMs to NOV’s BLM division, which designs and manufactures ship and offshore equipment products. The solution is for an eight-point mooring system, that will keep the vessel locked and stable during operations. The original performance criteria was 0-2750 kN, but that was later changed to 3,500kN (approx. 350t). DLM chose a customised solution, based on its standard 200t-rated RLM, adapted to a larger rope diameter and increased safe working load (SWL) and minimum breaking load (MBL) requirements. Jamie Woodcock, business development manager at DLM, said: “The initially-quoted working range was up-rated by the client. The calibration was also a challenge due to the high working load and proof load requirements. We tested to a safe calibrated load using wire rope, then proof tested the pin
in a compression machine to simulate the resultant load the pin would see when in service. This negated the need for risky and potentially unsafe wire rope tests to this very high tension [5,000 kN].” Woodcock added: “By enlarging the frame we could use larger wheels to suit the 76mm diameter rope. We also needed to up-rate some components for the higher SWL, but still maintained a high safety factor.” Other standout features of the RLMs included maximum design speed of 30m/min
up to 200t, 15m/min thereafter; proof load 1.5 x SWL, which equalled 5,625 kN line tension; and high repeatable accuracy up to the full working scale. The calibration process required multiple 76mm slings, as each RLM needed to have multiple runs.

Worldwide demand for davit systems has increased to enable rapid deployment of military vessels. Norwegian davit supplier Vestdavit saw record sales of US$19.2m last year Xxxxx - up 25% on 2019. Orders have mainly been from the US, Europe and Australia, and primarily from navies and coast guards within the public procurement sector that account for more than 75% of Vestdavit’s davit turnover, according to managing director Rolf Andreas Wigand. He sees this as part of an “underlying market trend of global threats and uncertainty” fuelled by the proliferation of piracy, terrorism, smuggling and the narcotics trade, as well as resource nationalism.
SUBSTATION CRANES FOR HORNSEA 2 Having supplied 14 cranes for Hornsea 1 offshore windfarm, Palfinger has announced an important part of its lifting gear contract for Hornsea 2. At the heart of the Hornsea 2 installation is the offshore substation (OSS). These offshore substations collect the power from the wind turbines, stabilize and maximize the voltage of the power generated, and transmit the electricity to shore with as little loss as possible. Halfway to the coastline 120 kilometers away is the reactive compensation station (RCS), which allows transmission over much longer cables using high-voltage alternating current. Palfinger will equip the OSS with one telescopic crane (DKT400), two davit cranes (PF17000) and the RCS with one stiff-boom crane (PSM400) and two davit cranes (PF17000). Both substations are constructed by Sembcorp Marine’s wholly owned subsidiary, Sembcorp Marine Offshore Platforms. The cranes will be used to safely load and unload cargo between the crew transfer vessels and the decks of the substations, even in the most adverse conditions (for which the North Sea is well-known). Palfinger Singapore is also involved in this project, having received the order from Singapore-based Sembcorp Marine to install the telescopic, stiff boom and davit cranes. Palfinger Singapore’s involvement ensures language and geographical barriers are

resolved while providing local expertise in terms of the legal framework and after-sales requirements in the region. Alexander Lee, Area Sales Manager in Singapore, plays a vital part in this global contract. “We are working closely with our long-term business partner, Sembcorp Marine Offshore Platforms, and are coordinating the sophisticated requirements with our design engineers in Austria and Norway.”

MONITORING, CONTROL & AUTONOMY
MANAGING THE ENERGY CHANGE Greening the workboat and support vessel industry requires engaging with the new, alternative power systems, said Tim Munn of iconsys
Although it’s tempting to hand it all over to a chosen supplier, the one-stop shops offered by manufacturing tie-ins might not yield an appropriate solution. We’ve found that the product ranges offered by a single OEM aren’t necessarily fully compatible with each other
‘‘
Further, this segment requires careful configuration and energy management that leaves an appropriate redundancy: for example, “a charge level in the battery that allows you to get home”, he explained.
Photo: Rolls-Royce
Unfortunately, it’s not quite as simple as signing up for a single OEM solution. “It’s been diesel engines for years, then lately batteries, but now there are fuel cells coming onboard,” said Munn. But all these different technologies have very different characteristics and needs: for example, fuel cells react fairly slowly therefore it’s better to use batteries to take the immediate demand. While larger vessels have weight and space to spare, iconsys will initially be targeting its systems toward yards and owners operating small to medium vessels - especially those in the windfarm, patrol boat and short sea ferry segments that are now being driven rapidly toward clean running, “but which have much more of a problem sticking 16t of batteries on their back”, pointed out Munn. He added it gets even more challenging when other constraints come into play, such as rapid recharging demands “which can impact the battery’s lifetime”. Although it’s tempting to hand it all over to a chosen supplier, the one-stop shops offered by manufacturing tieins might not yield an appropriate solution. “We’ve found that the product ranges offered by a single OEM aren’t necessarily fully compatible with each other,” said Munn. Moreover, they can fall short of specific demands. Importantly, iconsys, with its roots in a wide swath of automation systems - used in everything from manufacturing robots to greening cities - offers independence and the necessary security: it already has OEM agreements in place and a good understanding of how to integrate the various systems. As Munn concluded, “flexibility” remains key: “It may well be that a motor from Danfoss, a drive from ABB and a control system from Siemens would give you the best fit, both from managing demand and onboard space.” Even given tight parameters.
8 New technology onboard windfarm, patrol boats and short sea ferries will be supported by iconsys’ automation without single-OEM constraints
IoT remote access for vessels

8 Vessel owners now have access to an easy to use remote access solution
Photo: Danelec Marine/ TeamViewer
Trials have been completed for a low-cost and simple to deploy system for ship data transfer and remote access that will help vessel owners embrace digitalisation and improve efficiency. As an alternative to Virtual Private Networks (VPN) for Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, Danelec Marine and TeamViewer have developed a customised version of the TeamViewer IoT agent, that embeds into the operating system of Danelec’s Vessel Remote Server (VRS) and launches on demand. “Combining the convenience and security aspects of TeamViewer with the VRS has given fleet managers new opportunities for any remote actions or root cause analysis capabilities from shore,” said Patrick Giezen, IoT solutions excellence manager, TeamViewer. “Also, simple tasks like the
remote calibration of sensors can now be carried out whilst the vessel is deployed and without interrupting any onboard workflows.” The system enables a secure ship-shore connection to be established quickly and easily, with a user-friendly interface
providing remote access management centrally for a whole fleet. This reduces the IT department burden of enabling remote access while providing a foundation for secure and easy to manage access for employees and third parties. Three Danelec customers took part in the trials, which started in August 2020 and finished in December. Cypriot ship management company Interorient used the solution on five vessels, easily meeting success criteria based on pre-annual performance testing of the VDR and remote data download. Interorient generated further operational savings by using remote access to optimise configuration of a new VDR and its connected sensors, as well as exploring new applications.
