Plymouth Sound, the home of UK’s first National Marine Park has been awarded £9.5 million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to make its vision of a park in the sea a reality. People across the city and surrounding the Sound are celebrating after learning the bid for the Heritage Horizon Awards has been successful.

Electric outboards Torqeedo has announced the appointment of Anders Hård as its vice-president global services. Hård is responsible for developing Torqeedo’s international service and aftermarket sales and support strategy.

In addition, his team develops tools, processes, and standards to ensure that Torqeedo customers have the best owner experience possible.

Electrification

Torqeedo, a specialist in marine electromobility solutions, celebrated the groundbreaking of its new headquarters and production facilities on 30 June 2021. The company will remain a tenant of the Air Tech Campus (ATC) Oberpfaffenhofen in the Munich metro area, where it has been located since 2012.

Cromarty

Opportunity Cromarty Firth has appointed its manager to lead The PowerHouse, a global centre of excellence in the Scottish Highlands aimed at bringing together the foremost academic partners and innovative renewable energy organisations to the region. Mina Hanna, a former petroleum and renewable energy sources engineer, will be tasked with managing the centre, housed at North Highland College UHI’s Tern House, in Alness Point Business Park, Easter Ross.

PENZANCE DRY DOCK UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP After more than six months of negotiations, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group has announced the successful completion of the sale of Penzance Dry Dock (2009) Limited to Penzance-based engineering business Linked Solutions SW Limited.

It will continue to be business as usual at the Dry Dock as all current employees will remain employed.

Further, Linked Solutions has also pledged to maintain the dry docking facility for leisure and commercial vessels.

The dry dock, which is fully equipped for marine engineering and maintenance activities, has been leased and operated by Isles of Scilly Steamship Group since 2009. But in January this year, the Group announced its intention to concentrate on its core transport business and confirmed they would not renew the lease on the dock.

Linked Solutions SW Ltd, which provides marine engineering, design and fabrications as well as project management and consultancy services has purchased the entire shareholding of the operating company. The Steamship Group is providing financial support to enable the sale to proceed.

Bottoms blowing bubbles again in decisive decarbonisation drive A shipping major that can lay claim to inventing friction reducing ship bottom air lubrication over one hundred years ago is diving back in.

Air lubrication for marine vessels is a developing solution that Rotterdam-based maritime technology company, Alfa Laval says will radically reduce fuel consumption and environmental impact. Having acquired a minority stake in Marine Performance Systems B.V., Alfa Laval will be instrumental in making this long-sought technology a commercial reality.

The idea of using bubbles to reduce a vessel’s friction - which is the largest driver of fuel consumption as it moves through the water - has existed for well over a century. Nonetheless, it has taken time to realize. Alfa Laval has chosen to invest in Marine Performance Systems, whose unique method of producing bubbles with fluidics is a breakthrough that promises

to reduce fuel consumption by 8-12% at a vessel’s normal service speed.

“The use of fluidics creates a larger air layer of superior quality,” says Frode Lundsteen Hansen, who founded Marine Performance Systems in 2018 with innovators Pieter Kapteijn and Fulko Roos.

“Our FluidicAL technology enables truly effective air lubrication, with immediate environmental benefits and substantial savings for shipowners.

Alfa Laval shares our belief that this technology will facilitate the transition to green shipping.”

Apprentices are being offered a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to play a role in the future of zero-emissions vessels.

Artemis Technologies and Belfast Met College in Northern Ireland have announced the three-year Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship programme that will combine classroom tuition with hands-on experience at Artemis Technologies, working alongside its team of experts.

It marks a major milestone for the Artemis Technologies-led Belfast Maritime Consortium project to create transformative marine technologies and a new range of zero-emission vessels in Belfast.

Artemis Technologies CEO, Iain Percy, said: “The Belfast Maritime Consortium is working on some real world firsts and this is an opportunity to get involved at the very cutting edge of developments in advanced manufacturing.

“The technology we produce here will make it possible to have fast boats all around the world, not polluting, and that’s a big deal.

Stena

Swedish ferry company Stena Line is strengthening its position and expanding services in the Baltic Sea Region, by deploying two new large and modern ferries on the route between Ventspils in Latvia and Nynäshamn in Sweden this year.

The first of the two vessels, Stena Scandica has entered Ventspils port on Tuesday 29 June to get ready for its maiden voyage on the route.

A new powerhouse in the heavy lift sector has been established with the launch of a joint venture (JV).

Jumbo Shipping, the Dutch maritime heavy lift transport and engineering contractor, and SAL Heavy Lift, the German-based breakbulk and project cargo specialist, have launched the Jumbo-SAL-Alliance.

Michael Kahn, managing director of Jumbo, said: “We believe that the flexibility and competences that our clients are looking for are best served by SAL’s and Jumbo’s combined assets and knowledge.”

Jens Baumgarten, director of chartering at SAL Heavy Lift, added: “This collaboration allows us to bring an unrivalled shipping product to market. It provides a solid answer to the needs of big contractors and EPCs as well as manufacturers and forwarders.”

POLITICIANS ASSESS RENEWABLE ENERGY

Politicians are assessing renewable energy in Scotland ahead of the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference.

Members of the House of Commons Scottish Affairs Committee visited the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney last month as part of their evidence gathering. A report on their findings will make recommendations to UK Government this summer ahead of November’s COP26 in Glasgow.

Neil Kermode, managing director, EMEC said: “We have tested more than 30 different wave and tidal technologies in Orkney, giving us valuable experience and insight into the existing UK supply chain and importantly, the economic potential for Scotland and the UK. Marine energy’s predictability offers energy system resilience, and quality job generation provides valuable economic opportunities for maritime communities. Internationally, there’s huge UK export potential as a global marine industry leader.

“However, to deliver these benefits, the sector urgently needs positive signals from government,

and we hope the Committee members can help amplify our message which is calling for dedicated support for wave and tidal energy to be part of the UK’s green economic recovery.”

Five Committee members went to EMEC’s tidal test site where they saw two tidal energy devices on site: Orbital’s O2 device, which was developed with around 80% UK supply chain content; and Magallanes’ ATIR device, a Spanish company bringing inward investment via technology demonstration at EMEC’s world leading facilities.

PONTOON BUILD ON TRACK

Manor Marine recently won its first contract with VolkerStevin to build two pontoons for the Thanckes Fuel Depot upgrade project in Plymouth, Devon.

Build of the pontoons commenced at the beginning of March 2021; they will serve as an upgraded crew access and refuelling pontoon. The refuelling pontoon will be 33 metres in length and the crew access pontoon will be 19 metres in length, both constructed from heavy duty steel. The pontoons are being built to meet Lloyds Classification Society rules.

THE SCIENCE OF BREAKWATER BLOCK PLACEMENT Coda Octopus has announced the release of a new Management Reporting Tool for its Construction Monitoring Solution software suite.

The Coda Octopus CMS Solution, which benefits from many patents, provides real time visualization, tracking and placement of blocks underwater.

All Block types are supported in the program. The CMS Management Reporting Tool is an extension of Coda Octopus CMS Solution. Using its Physics Engine, it calculates the contact points of each block and from that it estimates whether the block is “a good placement” or “a bad placement”.

Using Coda’s Pose Estimation Method which, amongst other things, assesses contact points of the AsLaid Blocks, the CMS Management Reporting Tool is intended to aid a user to identify poorly laid blocks within breakwater constructions. It integrates with CMS and imports an ‘AsLaid’ file with the block data. This is then displayed in a grid view and a user can filter and interact with the data to refine the blocks they would like to examine. This is further enhanced

with a visual rendering of the block and its neighbours to illustrate how the block is placed.

Blocks can be reviewed and marked as accepted if the operator deems them to be well placed. Once the blocks have

been reviewed a report can be generated and viewed in a browser. The CMS Management Reporting Tool can also be used as a “Project Placement Review” Tool at any stage of the block placement project.

DECOMMISSIONING INVESTMENT

A specialist engineering company has invested more than £700,000 to develop tools which provide greener, faster and safer solutions for decommissioning in the energy sector.

Decom Engineering’s latest R&D investment has updated their Pipe Coating Removal (PCR) equipment, which cleans

Sensitive restoration Southsea Coastal Scheme made the top five of this year’s ‘People’s Choice’ category in the 2021 SECBE Constructing Excellence Awards.

The project team was a finalist in the awards for its sensitive approach to restoring Long Curtain Moat - one of the last surviving parts of Portsmouth’s town fortifications.

Crucial heritage and enabling works were undertaken from September 2019, involving repairs to the inner moat walls as well as preparation work for the start of the Southsea Coastal Scheme.

Methods used were sympathetic to the historic significance of the area and included using floating pontoons for easy access that limited damage likelihood. Where possible, hand tools were used to ensure the necessary protection of the heritage asset.

Portsmouth was the only British town where moat defences were adopted. Lord Nelson passed through the brick-lined sally port under Long Curtain Moat in 1805 on his last departure from England.

Climate change being overlooked

In a recent survey, conducted by the UK’s Institute of Civil Engineers, more than 60% of civil engineers do not feel climate change is prioritised sufficiently in infrastructure design and delivery, according to new Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) research.

A survey of 900 UK-based ICE members found that more than half (66%) of infrastructure professionals felt greenhouse gas emissions were given less or far less importance than they would like. Some 59% said the same for climate change adaptation. A lack of joined-up thinking (47%) was seen as the primary blocker for both issues, while absence from the project brief (44%) was second.

The survey was carried out in collaboration with the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) Design Group and based around its Design Principles for National Infrastructure.

KENC Engineering has been awarded a contract to design a Hydrosound Damper Deployment System.

To install monopiles at an offshore wind farm, the clients’ heavy lift vessel will be equipped with a hydrosound damper system to minimize underwater piling noise.

KENC will design the HSDDS to enable a safe and quick deployment cycle of the hydrosound damper system. The project is well underway and the client - a Dutch offshore wind contractor - stated KENC showed a solid performance.

Eric Buining, managing director at KENC said: “The challenge here was to develop an HSDDS in such a way that it can be fitted into the existing monopile handling system gripper design with a minimum of interfaces and within a very short timeframe. We’re very proud to contribute to the construction of the offshore wind farm and look forward to bring the project to a successful end!”.

Flood alleviation project In the UK, BMT has been awarded a project by Essex County Council (ECC) to assist with the development of flood alleviation measures from surface water flooding within three Critical Drainage Areas (CDA) identified

by BMT within the County.

Using the advanced modelling functionality from BMT’s proprietary TUFLOW technology, BMT will provide critical information to be used in support of flood alleviation measures for each impacted area within Essex. This will include appraisal, hydraulic modelling of a preferred mitigation, economic assessment of the preferred mitigation and a Partnership Funding Calculator (PFC) to assess the FDGiA funding potential associated with each area. BMT’s environmental consultancy business has invested in developing long term relationships with its customers and has a long history of collaboration and partnering with Essex County Council on sustainability issues and flood modelling work.

Monopile driving sound mitigatrion

For floating wind technology to meaningfully contribute to the renewable energy mix in the next decade there must be a significant standardisation effort around substructure technologies.

This is according to clean energy consultancy K2 Management, which has forecast an increase in both partnerships and OEM acquisitions as investors look to secure supply chain confidence.

Will Sheard, director of analysis and due diligence at K2 Management, said: To boost broader investor confidence in the sector, funding and consolidation will be critical.”

Sheard believes that in order to move beyond the R&D phase and into full-scale commercial deployment, floating wind

technology, and with it the supply chain, must be consolidated as per conventional offshore foundations previously.

He explained in more detail: “The big OEMs are cautious about taking on R&D risk...but this attitude is forcing the risk and R&D pressure elsewhere - and now we have as many base concepts as we do base OEMs. “Base OEMs are typically smaller businesses without the balance sheet to drive convergence of design and therefore commercial scalability.

In order to achieve floating wind at the required scale, however, investors need confidence in the supply chain - and there are potential procurement risks in having such a disparity of options available from highly specialised firms.”

Prysmian Group has been awarded a contract worth a total of around €140 million by the Turkish utility TEIAS for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of two highvoltage submarine power cable links, one between Europe and Asia, the other across the Izmit Gulf in Asia.

The first project — Dardanelles III — includes the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the third high-voltage submarine power cable link between Europe and

To secure the future of floating wind in the next decade, we expect to see an increase in larger players including many from the diversified O&G industry with experience working with floating substructures - acquiring smaller base manufacturers, therefore providing the balance sheet backing that will support the transition to commercial scale.

This will make R&D conversations between turbine manufacturers and base manufacturers equitable, and accelerate development of complete, connected, commercially viable floating wind structures.”

HIRTSHALS HAVN PREPARES FOR NEW GREEN FUTURE New facilities and green port development will prepare the Danish Port of Hirtshals for what it is calling its ‘version 2.0’

The facilities at the port will be expanded with a new entry and an outer port basin which should improve the navigational conditions significantly. This will make it possible to open the port to larger vessels and in harsher weather conditions than today. Furthermore, it will be easier for vessels to navigate the port, and their loading and unloading opportunities will be improved with further quay areas and ro/ro berths. The expansion will also include more commercial land and parking areas for trailers and lorries.

The port is part of the EU’s prioritised transport network TEN-T, and the development will ensure a better utilisation of the total capacity on the North European sea, road and rail network.

The port wishes to involve the public, including the local population in Hirtshals and in Hjoerring Municipality as well as tourists and other visitors. At the moment, they are working

on initiatives such as viewing platforms, areas for recreation and angling, and the opportunity to move around the new port areas either on foot or by car.

Part of the plan is support for the development of different means of propulsion, including for instance green power for e.g. hydrogen, ammonia and other green fuels. The demand for a larger production and utilisation of power means that further wind turbines will be erected at the port in addition to the existing wind turbines. Previous experience shows that the turbines can be an economic advantage and contribute to the financing of the new port facilities.

Hirtshals expects the company to be founded during the summer. After this, the work of strengthening the green perspectives at the port can begin, it’s first job being securing authority approvals. The plan is for the new facilities to be ready for use in 2025-2026.

North Sea subsea cabling consultation Planned HVDC links between England and Scotland have been deemed ‘essential’ by a recent Ofgen consultation.

SSEN Transmission has welcomed the recent publication of Ofgen’s consultation on the assessment of plans submitted by all three GB onshore electricity Transmission Owners (TOs) for the strategic and timely development of the first two of a series of planned subsea electricity transmission HVDC links connecting Scotland and England along the east coast.

The initial two links are essential to alleviate constraints on the GB transmission system, enabling growth in renewable

electricity and supporting the transition to net zero emissions. They will also support hundreds of green jobs throughout construction and operation, playing a key role in the green recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

Work to progress each of the 2GW links will now split into two projects. The Peterhead to Selby link, which has a targeted energisation date of 2029, will be progressed jointly by SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET); and the Torness to Hawthorn Pit link, with a targeted energisation date of 2027, will be progressed jointly by SP Energy Networks and NGET.

To further support the forecast growth in renewables, particularly offshore wind and the UK and Scottish Government’s 2030 targets of 40GW and 11GW respectively, a second series of HVDC links from Scotland to England is also planned.

As part of the UK Government’s Offshore Transmission Network Review (OTNR), the three Transmission Owners are working with Government, Ofgen, the GB Electricity System Operator (ESO) and wider industry to help accelerate the significant investment in transmission infrastructure required to deliver a pathway to these 2030 targets.

REAL TIME PROCESSING MODULE New Zealand Multibeam Echosounder specialist ENL Group has released the latest product in their WASSP S-Series range with the updated S3 and S3r kit with new Real-time Processing Module The new S3 builds upon previous iterations of the S3 improving both hardware and software to give amazing performance for money within the mid-range survey market.

The new WASSP S3 is claimed to be one of the world’s most cost-effective, professional survey and mapping multibeam echosounder solutions able to survey up to 10 times faster than a single-beam echosounder. It combines data from a multibeam transducer simultaneously generating a 120 degrees swath with up to 100 pings per second. This functionality now incorporates advanced signal processing from the new RPM (Real-time Processing Module) along with position, heading, motion and sound velocity to create an accurate bathymetric map meeting hydrographic survey standards such as IHO S-44 order 1b, 1a and Special Order, capable of mapping objects within 2cm depth accuracy. These new improvements make the WASSP S3 one of the worlds most cost-effective Multibeam Echosounders on the market.

The S3 includes an improved IP66 waterproof DRX processor, along with the new RPM processing module and a high performance fairing transducer perfect for pole or hull mounting.

WASSP’s own user friendly CDX remains the primary UI and interfaces with an even greater range of 3rd party software options such as BeamworX, HYPACK, EIVA, Qinsy, SonarWiz, Echoview and many more. Testing has confirmed the Geometrics MagArrow magnetometer to be efficient at low altitude flights.

SPH Engineering, developer of UgCS ground control software and solutions for industrial applications, as part of its strategy to expand its range of supported sensors, completed tests of the Geometrics MagArrow magnetometer together with a radar altimeter and True Terrain Following technology for surveys requiring extremely low altitude (1-2 meters between a sensor and surface).

Alexey Dobrovolskiy, CTO of SPH Engineering, said: “As of today, MagArrow has been typically used for surveys conducted at high altitude, like minerals prospecting or abandoned wells detection. We can confirm with confidence to UgCS and Geometrics clients that True Terrain Following and MagArrow are fully compatible allowing

During the tests over lake magnetic anomalies were detected at half a metre under lake bottom, water depth 1-3m. The existence of anomalies was confirmed using a low-frequency GPR system.

In terms of R&D adjustments, UgCS Industrial Solutions determined the optimal position of a radar altimeter on a drone carrying a MagArrow, which is affixed to the UAV using suspension cables.

The True Terrain Following system was fine-tuned for this application, and this simplified the workflow to refine the coordinates in the magnetic data with the help of more precise position tracks from UgCS SkyHub onboard computer.

8 Fratelli Neri has named its trio of Damen RSD 2513 tugs

for a ‘next generation’ tug comes with the order for an ASD Tug 2312 from South32 GEMCO to support its manganese mining operation in Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory.

Modifications will include installation of a push-bow, CCTV, a crane and a second towing line and anchor. Around six ASD Tug 2312s are now in service globally including in Europe with a substantial stock-build list in the pipeline from Damen’s Vietnam facility and delivery of this example is due

by October this year.

Finally, last month mention was made of an unknown number of tugs to be built by Sanmar for operation at LNG Canada’s new export facility in British Columbia. Further information now confirms the order involves two LNG-fueled RAL RAstar 4000DF escort tugs and three first-of-class ElectRA 2800 battery-electric harbour tugs (see elsewhere in this issue). The 40m RAstar examples will provide over 100tbp and generate indirect escort forces of approximately 200t and will be the most powerful ASD escort tugs on Canada’s west coast with Sanmar proudly adding that they will ‘rank among the world’s highest-performing escort tugs.’

Aalst, the Netherlands-based Neptune Marine has delivered a EuroCarrier tug/workboat to Jifmar Offshore Service’s Scottish subsidiary North West Marine. Jif Mairi is a EuroCarrier 2409, a variant of the 2209 with the 14tbp vessel modified to the client’s specific requirements for supporting its fish farm activities while still retaining standard role capabilities. Removable wooden bow doors are included along with upgraded fendering and ladder arrangements on the starboard side with deck equipment including a 50t anchor-handling/towing winch, 10t tugger winch and two Heila cranes. Accommodation for the BV-classed vessel includes three ‘properly sized cabins.’

Italian towage operator Fratelli Neri has completed its procurement programme for a trio of Damen RSD 2513 ‘always bow first’ tugs with the naming of Romito, Calafuria and Gabriella Neri. All three Italian-flagged vessels are fifi1 equipped with notation including escort, oil recovery and salvage and while the first two have a bollard pull of 70t, Gabriella Neri offers slightly more power at 80tbp.

Turkey’s Sanmar Shipyards is seldom out of the news and following last month’s reporting of delivery of the RAL TundRA 3200 design Selene to Finland’s Alfons Håkans, vessel number two, built as Sanmar Tundra II is now in Håkans care reportedly to be named Helios. The pair is Sanmar’s first venture into heavy ice-breaking tugs and now part of its standard portfolio while for Alfons Håkans these highspecification vessels will enhance its fleet of over 40 conventional, ASD and tractor tugs.

Tugs come in all sizes and along with Kotug’s CityBarge mentioned elsewhere in this column another that falls into this category sees Cummins providing interesting details of five tugs with the designation ‘work boat docking’ built by Modutech Marine of Tacoma, Washington and now in operation with the US Navy. Providing support to naval installations these ‘Swiss Army knives’ assist vessels including submarines for mooring and drydocking, operating security barriers and providing other push-pull services for port equipment.

The rectangular-shaped tugs are just 7.62m by 4.27m but with a requirement for high maneuverability have a relatively deep draught of 2.4m. A single 450hp Cummins QSM11 engine drives a forward-mounted Schottel SRP150 azimuth thruster providing 4.5tbp and protected by a heavy pipe guard, manoeuverability enhanced by hull-mounted fins.

Removable push-knees are fitted forward and while they normally operate with a crew of two there is room for an additional five passengers.

Damen recently reported orders (all vessel types) more than doubling to a record €8bn relative to year-end 2019. Its tug building activities are contributing to this including the awarding of a contract from Australia-based Engage Marine for three ASD Tug 3212s, a marque recently upgraded and designated by Damen as one of its ‘next generation’ series described as taking ‘an evolutionary step forwards in terms of safety, sustainability, reliability and efficiency.’ The 85tbp tugs, due in Q3 this year are on the back of a ‘non-exclusive towage licence’ awarded to Engage Marine by North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation for provision of towage services at Port of Abbot Point.

As the drive to make shiphandling tugs more environmentally friendly gathers pace, in parallel is work by ports such as Rotterdam to move freight away from increasingly congested road networks to other forms of transshipment such as inland waterways and rail, a process known as modal shift. Moving inland barges from fossil fuel to battery power offers an intriguing opportunity to avoid harmful emissions being simply transferred to other communities. Pusher tugs also offer enhanced utilisation swapping between barges rather than waiting for cargo operations as with conventional barges.

Kotug International is well-placed to develop this concept, experienced in a range of towing from inland to deepsea and based in Rotterdam with connections to Europe’s inland waterway system. The project involves three modular and scalable electric E-Pusher tugs between 5.5m and 22m in length with draughts 40% less than conventional pushers.

They are powered by swappable energy containers offering various fuel sources including stage V diesel, biogas, hydrogen and battery. Kotug’s OptiPort AI-driven dispatch and route planning application uses historical and real-time

information to optimise expected arrival and departure times, routing and speed controls and will be used by Kotug.

OptiPort has been available since 2017 and currently in use in Australia, Japan, US, Canada, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Kotug CityBarge BV is a partnership between Kotug and Circle Line Logistics BV and started activities recently with a 5.5m E-Pusher in the municipality of Leiden providing a ‘zeroemission alternative for heavy truck transport in inner-cities ... restoring inner-city waterways by using them to transport garbage, construction materials and retail products.’

Regional Inland Shipping Minister, Jeannette Baljeu said: “The Province of South Holland is involved since the start of the project around reinstating waterways as a means of transport with the development of the CityBarge, the smallest version of the E-pusher. Clean transport is one of our priorities, by bringing together business and government to solve mutual challenges, solutions like the E-Pusher are no longer just paper ideas but market-ready products. Transport Malta has identified lessons after a tug crew member was seriously injured in a fall from his vessel to the quay.

The tug was alongside a wharf with two crew tasked with changing the cover of its rescue boat located on the accommodation forward of the wheelhouse. One crewmember stepped on the unprotected outboard side of the rescue boat, using the drenching curtain pipe as his footing to ease the hoisting arrangement tension, release the hook and pass the lifting slings through the new cover’s opening. There then followed a sequence including where various controls for the lifting arrangement were operated but the crewmember involved activated the crane’s slewing mechanism which dragged the boat

outboard pushing the crewmember horizontally where he fell on to the wharf. His injuries included several broken bones and lacerations requiring surgery and he was discharged from hospital 13 days later.

The investigation by Transport Malta’s

Marine Safety Investigation Unit included a detailed technical examination of the crane’s hydraulic and operating system and concluded the slewing mechanism was activated accidentally leading to the fall. It established that a risk assessment was not considered necessary for the task and identified that the crewman moved outboard where no guard rails were fitted and was not wearing a safety harness or helmet. It concluded the crew members were not entirely familiar with the davit operation and that during drills only the engineers actuated the davit’s controls and was always carried out from the local control station.

ROBERT ALLAN INTRODUCES THE ELECTRA SERIES

News of the recent tug order for HaiSea Marine with Sanmar Shipyards also marks introduction of the ElectRA, Robert Allan Ltd’s (RAL) new range of battery electric tugs.

There is clearly no turning back now with development of alternative fuel tugs with RAL progressing the concept of battery power head-on and offering a range of five vessels between 21m and 28m in length and up to 70tbp.

The attraction is to significantly reduce or even eliminate exhaust emissions in ports and the HaiSea/LNG Canada order will see three ElectRA 2800 variant tugs ‘fuelled’ by clean hydroelectric power from the local grid, each vessel’s battery capacity of up to 6,102kWh allowing them ‘to perform a majority or even all missions on battery power alone’ realising the near complete elimination of CO2 and other potentially harmful exhaust emissions.

The range includes ElectRA 2100, 2300, 2500 and 2600-T variants, each offering a distinctly different take on battery electric propulsion. The 70tbp 2500 marque includes backup diesel gensets for fire-fighting and extended endurance but in a compact hullform with approximately 3,200kWh of battery power, RAL stating ‘these are still formidable battery electric tugs capable of a

wide range of missions including escort.’

The ElectRA 2300 meanwhile recognises that battery tug operations will mostly take place in harbours with reduced requirements for overnight accommodation. By sacrificing some of this space, over 3,500kWh of battery capacity will be accommodated while

maintaining some backup diesel generator capacity and a very capable bollard pull in excess of 60t.

The ElectRA 2100 is different again by eliminating the main gensets entirely along with associated space consuming diesel, exhaust, ventilation and cooling systems but retaining a small get-home generator in the deckhouse. This pure battery tug therefore allows a maximum installation in excess of 5,000kWh ‘designed to reduce costs associated with battery electric tugs to a minimum’ the 2100 model offers a bollard pull of 50t.

As the designation suggests, the ElectRA 2600-T is a tractor configuration compared to the previous ASD variants with nearly 4,000kWh batteries providing 70tbp and capable of fire-fighting and escort duties. The series can be customised to client’s requirements, described as critical to ensure the battery capacity meets the required energy needs while avoiding excessive investment compared to what is needed.

Tsavliris Salvage is known for its global emergency response activities, particularly involving Lloyd’s Open Form (LOF) contracts and the first incident to report followed a classic ‘T-Bone’ collision around 10 miles NW of Kythira Island Greece between the bulk carrier Kiveli while underway from Morocco to Bulgaria laden with 36,100t of Khouribga rock phosphate and another bulk carrier Afina I also laden, with 12,069t of hot briquetted iron on passage from Russia to Spain.

A LOF was agreed with Tsavliris and a fleet of tugs assembled along with associated equipment and divers. Kiveli’s bow was embedded into the port side of Afina I forward of the accommodation and as common in such situations the two ships were not immediately separated. The following day the two vessels, still in the locked position were moved by tugs to Vatika Island, Elafonisos where they were separated without any environmental impact. Six weeks of salvage work followed including during spells of bad weather involving moving the vessels within the anchorage, diving operations, offloading of

TUG OPERATIONS IN ICE

Such tugs break ice with their acceleration, weight, hull shape and power, their proven spoon-shape bow and round bilge hull form developed following extensive model testing.

RAL explains further: “This hull shape merges into a modern ship-docking style bow, providing low fender contact pressures for shiphandling duties.” Ice-knives under the stern prevent large ice blocks contacting the propulsion units, the hull shape allowing dynamic clearing of a channel with a width twice the tug’s beam. More specifically the design has to be capable of ice breaking, ice management and channel clearing with covered foredeck winches and heated decks combating the elements.

that the slightly less efficient open water performance resultant from a design optimised for the most onerous ice performance criteria can be minimised by using diesel mechanical electric hybrid power configurations designed to match the operational profile accompanied by the usual emissions and maintenance gains with such choices.

The recent deliveries of the TundRA marques mentioned above and reported in this column recently are the 65tbp Svitzer Edda and Svitzer Embla TundRA 3000 versions built by Eregli Gemi for Svitzer’s Scandinavian operations and the slightly larger Sanmar-built 3200 variants Selene and a second reportedly to carry the name Helios for Finland’s Alfons Håkans.

With recent deliveries to Svitzer and Alfons Håkans, Robert Allan Ltd (RAL) reflects on the detail of its TundRA class tug/icebreaker.

Shiphandling tug operators have a multitude of choices when it comes to selecting a suitable design to meet their requirements. As well as satisfying the obvious towing requirements some may need additional capabilities, for example pollution response, anchor-handling and navigation aid maintenance. A particular challenge for designers however is to produce a tug able to qualify as multipurpose but also to work in and manage ice conditions at ports affected by such and the TundRA is RAL’s answer.

In the northern Europe scenario, the TundRA hull structure meets Finnish-Swedish Ice Class Rules capable of continuously breaking ice up to 1m to 1.2m thickness at up to three knots. They are described as ‘multi-functional tools’ with open sea capabilities, also capable of escort duties and within a range of sizes including what is described as ‘compact designs.’

When the 76,619dwt bulk carrier Navios Sun became disabled in ballast condition SE of Kuril Islands, Asia, Tsavliris mobilised the 132tbp tug Koyo Maru to assist along with three salvage personnel. Within two days a towing connection was established but the passage to a safe port was hampered by spells of bad weather along with a fishing net entangled in the towing wire. With the assistance of local tugs, Navios Sun was safely berthed at Fujian Huadong Shipyard, China three weeks after the initial breakdown.

A calmer operation for Tsavliris saw the tug

Six weeks of salvage work followed including during spells of bad weather involving moving the vessels within the anchorage, diving operations, offloading of cargo and vessel towage to Piraeus AH Liguria tasked from Malta to assist the MV Solstice N immobilised in Genoa, Italy with rudder problems, the ship was safely delivered to Piraeus Roads. An unusual call for assistance resulted when the bulk carrier Master reportedly ran low on fuel due to bad weather during a westbound transpacific crossing. Koyo Maru was again tasked and after escorting the vessel towards Muroran, Japan established a towing connection when it did run of fuel. The operation was completed when Koyo Maru delivered the bulker to Muroran anchorage to replenish its bunkers.

8 Dutch Marine Contractors (DMC) has been selected by HST Marine to handle the commercial management of its newbuild Multi Cat due later this year.

It follows the recent securing of a four-year contract with Oiltanking which sees the 2010, Chinese-built, 60tbp tug Svitzer Honour attending and servicing the Oiltanking Ebytem SA mono-buoys Punta Ancla and Punta Aigüeña in Puerto Rosales. TURBINES SET TO SURVIVE TWO DECADES UNDERWATER Rigorous tests have proved that a tidal power developer’s underwater turbines have the necessary build quality to survive for twenty years in the field Tidal power developer Sustainable Marine joined forces with the MaREI Centre at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI Galway), through German engineering partner Schottel Hydro, to test its new ‘ultra-durable’ turbine rotors.

The project was delivered under Marinet2 - Horizon 2020 programme supporting offshore renewable energy testing across the EU. It took place within the Ryan Institute and School of Engineering at the National University of Ireland Galway, which houses a 375m2 Structures Research Laboratory - the largest of its kind in the Republic of Ireland.

Sustainable Marine’s novel floating tidal energy system uses a common drive train and two different rotor diameters, measuring 6.3m and 4m, to suit requirements at different resource sites.

STRONGER CURRENT Having completed extensive tests on the 6.3m rotors at NUI Galway, the company returned to the Irish facility to assess the performance of its shorter 4m rotors, specifically designed for stronger current flow resource sites.

The state-of-the-art laboratory carried out ‘accelerated lifetime testing’ subjecting the rotors to conditions equivalent to 20 years of operation in the field, in just a matter of weeks.

It covered a broad range of parameters including stress, strain and vibration.

4m rotors, which is now undergoing commissioning and testing in Grand Passage.

ACCELERATED LIFETIME TESTING “We were delighted to return to NUI Galway to extend our partnership with this world-class test and research facility.” said Ralf Starzmann, Vice President of Business Development at Sustainable Marine. “This international collaboration, through our German engineering partner Schottel Hydro, provides a firm indication of our ambitions to continue raising the bar and advance the field of tidal turbine technology. In order to push the boundaries, it is essential that we challenge our solutions at leading facilities that can push the limits of our technology. Accelerated lifetime testing is an essential process which allows us to rapidly speed up normal conditions, to better understand how structures will react over time. Our new 4m rotor blade has proven to be ‘ultradurable’, providing full confidence in the design and structural integrity. Reliability is a key factor in tidal turbine development, particularly as we are now moving towards our first commercial projects.”

The complete analysis in the MaREI Centre at NUI Galway tested rotor behaviour under fatigue loading, reviewing aspects such as torsional deflection and overall structural performance. Further in-house testing carried out by Schottel Hydro involved ultimate loading and testing the integrity of the blade until failure.

Sustainable Marine is currently preparing to deliver the world’s first floating tidal energy array in the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia. Earlier this year, it launched its new 420kW PLAT-I 6.40 floating tidal energy platform, featuring the new

These projects also help train the next generation of energy engineers. To date, over 100 engineers have worked within our group, as either staff or students, and have gone on to work with some of the world’s leading companies.”

NUI Galway has decades of experience delivering fullscale testing for structural components and systems to static, dynamic and cyclic loadings. Its structural testing of tidal stream rotors is delivered in line with IEC and ISO standards, allowing manufacturers to achieve industry certification.

€2.5M EIC ACCELERATOR GRANT FOR FLOATING WIND A Spanish developer has secured a multi-million euro grant through the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator programme to launch its first commercial floating wind project It was named among 38 of the most promising start-ups by the EIC after being shortlisted from 4200 applications to receive funding to ‘develop and scale up ground-breaking innovations’.

X1 Wind CEO & Co-Founder Alex Raventos said the grant will provide resources to rapidly accelerate the detailed design and certification process of its first commercial largescale floating wind units.

The firm is currently preparing to deploy its groundbreaking PivotBuoy® technology at 1:3 scale in the Canary Islands after successfully completing the assembly and load-out. The fully functional (X30) prototype is equipped with a Vestas V29 turbine and will be stationed at a 50m water depth at the PLOCAN test site with full exposure to open ocean conditions.

“Following a rigorous application process, we are delighted to report our successful bid for EIC Accelerator funding,” said X1 Wind CEO & Co-Founder Alex Raventos. “This is the result of a tremendous team effort and represents a major vote of confidence in our technology which has matured significantly in recent years, now offering a truly unique and disruptive form on floating wind energy. The cash injection will be specifically used to fast-track the detailed design and certification of our first large-scale floating wind unit. We are currently in the process of evaluating potential precommercial sites and projects, in order to continue driving momentum following our current demonstration project in the Canary Islands.”

The system is connected to a single point mooring system in a downwind configuration - creating a ‘weathervaning’ solution which maximises use of passive systems.

The start-ups and SMEs selected for the EIC Accelerator Pilot come from 18 countries. All of which underwent a highly competitive evaluation by external experts. After whittling down thousands of entries the highest scoring 134 applications were invited to pitch online to an independent jury of experts, investors and entrepreneurs. As well as the financial support, the benefactors also have access to coaching, networking and business acceleration services to help build their businesses.

Wave energy developers can now apply for new funding to realise innovative projects.

The EuropeWave project is inviting wave energy developers to apply for funding via its pre-commercial procurement (PCP) programme. The five-year collaborative programme opened its call for tenders on 5 July, which will see several wave energy projects selected for the first stage of ‘concept development’.

A partnership between Wave Energy Scotland (WES), the Basque Energy Agency (EVE) and Ocean Energy Europe, EuropeWave will provide almost €20m to procure the most promising wave energy technologies from across Europe and beyond.

Tim Hurst of WES, said: “EuropeWave is designed to pick out the technological frontrunners and propel them - and the sector

as a whole - towards commercialisation.”

The programme will focus on the design, development, and demonstration of cost-effective wave energy converter (WEC) systems for electrical power production that can survive in the harsh and unpredictable ocean environment.

A three-stage process will award R&D

service contracts to companies or consortia who are involved in the development of wave energy converters (WECs) and their components. After each stage is completed, the best of the competing solutions will be selected from within the group to progress to the following phase.

The best performers will be demonstrated in Basque and Scottish open waters at the end of the programme.

EuropeWave’s PCP model provides a structured approach, fostering greater openness, collaboration and sharing of risk between the public sector and technology developers.

The call will be open until 1 October 2021.

MARINE RENEWABLES Nova Innovation and Sabella have recently joined forces to develop tidal energy projects in French and UK waters.

This freshly inked Memorandum of Understanding will accelerate development of tidal energy sites for both Scottish and French companies, combining expertise to drive rapid scale up of installed capacity in the tidal energy sector in both the UK and France.

The alliance will include co-operation across French and UK sites, driving down costs, catalysing opportunities for funding, and delivering economies of scale to tackle the climate emergency.

In November 2020, the European Commission published the European Offshore Strategy setting out the challenge of delivering marine energy capacity targets of 100MW by 2025, and 1GW by 2030. The move spurred talks between Nova Innovation and Sabella on how to combine efforts to meet the targets, resulting in the signing of this transformational MoU. Fanch Le Bris, CEO of Sabella, said, “We welcome this MoU between Sabella and Nova Innovation, and we can already see significant benefits from our teams working together to build capacity for tidal energy across France and the UK and making tidal energy a commercial reality.”

MARINE RENEWABLES Purchase of Cornish wave test site Deep water wind power developer Hexicon has purchased the Wave Hub test site from Cornwall Council, UK. The deal will see Hexicon through its UK subsidiary, TwinHub Limited, acquire the assets of Wave Hub Limited from the local authority, Cornwall Council, for an undisclosed sum, a move that has been welcomed by local renewable energy innovation body Marine-i.

The Wave Hub test site lies 16km off the north Cornwall coast. Hexicon intends to develop the site for a 30-40MW floating offshore wind project and deploy their innovative twin-turbine floating foundation.

OFFSHORE WIND ACCELERATING More than 200GW of new offshore wind projects have been announced since the beginning of 2020.

This is according to the 2020 Global Offshore Wind Annual Market Report issued by the Renewables Consulting Group (RCG). These new projects account for more than 44% of all global capacity at the pre-construction or early development phase.

RCG’s COO, Dr Lee Clarke, said: “This year’s Annual Market Report is an invaluable data source and its findings clearly demonstrate that global offshore wind continued to its impressive growth in all sectors during 2020. With a steady and predictable framework, we continue to see positive developments emanating from emerging markets, such as in the APAC and the Americas regions.”

Global investment for offshore wind set new highs last year as investment reached US$30bn, surpassing the previous high of US$22bn set in 2018.

New projects exceeding 500MW in capacity were announced in Spain, Ireland, Norway, Taiwan, South Korea, Italy, Brazil and Vietnam through to early 2021. The Americas also show future promise, found the report.

However, there remain significant challenges to the industry in meeting ambitious targets and enabling the realisation of projects in the pipeline beyond 2030.

Supply chain constraints across all regions, as well as undefined development frameworks and route to market mechanisms, will limit deployment of capacity across the sector through to 2030.

PROFESSIONAL GRADE FIRE BOAT FOR LUCERNE The Swiss lake town of Lucerne has welcomed a state-of-the-art aluminium-hulled fire and rescue launch to replace a 28-year-old outgoing boat The Finnish builders of the boat, Kewatec, participated in the recent hand-over of their new Serecraft W14 FiFi fireand rescue boat. Named Thor in a festive ceremony held in the presence of numerous honorary guests, the boat will be maintained by Shiptec AG from Lucerne, with whom Kewatec cooperates closely.

The 13.9m vessel is powered by a pair of Volvo Penta D6380 diesels, giving a maximum speed of 35 knots.

The new fire and rescue boat will replace an earlier 28-year-old boat called Donner, which had large traces of wear and use and outdated equipment. Paul Winiker, a member of the Board of Directors, and a fire brigade pastor symbolically baptized the new boat with water. Martin Merki, Director of Social Affairs and Safety says: “With this procurement, our fire brigade will once again have a modern and needs-based emergency boat at its disposal.”

“The fire and rescue boat is not only used for rescue and firefighting work in the event of fires on ships or boats,” says Fire Brigade Commander Theo Honermann. “It is also used to put out fires in buildings near the area’s beach.” In addition, fire and rescue boat is used to control water pollution, such as spilled oil.

Markus Magnusson, Project Manager at Kewatec said: “We are proud to have delivered this boat to the fire brigade in the city of Lucerne. We have long experience in building fire- and rescue boats and are convinced that it meets all the necessary requirements.”

After delivery, training for boat drivers will begin. The old fireboat will remain operational until all boat drivers have completed their training by October 2021 and thus the new fire- and rescue boat’s operational readiness is achieved.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the project progress has been steady, and the vessel was delivered on time on 31 May 2021, three years after the signing of the shipbuilding contract.

The 149.9m long and 31m wide vessel boasts over 10,000 tons of cable load capacity and is fitted with state-of-the-art instruments for cable transport, installation, and protection.

Once launched, CLV Nexans Aurora will lay export cables for offshore wind farms and interconnectors around the world like for the Seagreen OWF in Scotland, the Crete-Attica interconnector in Greece and the Empire Offshore Wind project in US.

FIRST GERMAN METHANOL RESEARCH SHIP UNDER BUILD The construction of Germany’s first sea-going research ship with methanol propulsion is underway as details of some of its principal components are revealed, writes Tom Todd The 35.7m long, 9m wide coastal research and training cutter Uthörn II is also the first methanol-fuelled ship to be built at a German shipyard. And that shipyard, as with so many previous pioneering German shipbuilding projects, most recently Atair - the world first LNG multi-purpose search and research ship - is Fassmer on the Weser.

The keel for Uthörn II was laid in June and the Governmentowned newbuild is for handover in October 2022 to operators the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmhorst Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven.

The newbuild will not only “set new standards for sustainability in German shipping” but will also be “the first sea-going German vessel equipped with an environmentally friendly and particularly low-emission methanol drive”, declares the AWI. Germany’s Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has put up €14.45 million for the new ship. It will replace the 30.5m x 8.5m training and coastal research cutter Uthörn, powered by MWM TBD engines and in service in the German Bight out of Heligoland since 1982. Uthörn will be 40 years old in 2022 and what will become of it is not yet known. The BMFB has however has already said that Uthörn II will operate in the same general area as its predecessor.

Last August after the Berlin Government placed the order for Uthörn II, yard MD Harald Fassmer said Atair had been challenging and added that in that respect nothing had changed as far as Uthörn II was concerned.

“The implementation of new drive technologies in special shipbuilding requires extensive system expertise on the part of the shipyard”, he said. “This applies to this new building in particular” he added noting that at that point relevant regulations and component type approvals were still being co-ordinated.

A year later, with construction underway, design plans are clearer and more advanced - as the AWI’s Michael Klages revealed to Maritime Journal.

As things stand, two Scania DI 16 diesel engines each of 300kW/1500 rpm and modified for operation with methanol are planned. They are being modified and supplied especially for the project by ScandiNAOS and will drive two compact AC 400v PM electric motors - type Ramme or similar - with Danfoss or comparable frequency converters. Two variable pitch propellers of unspecified make will be five-bladed to minimise underwater noise and will provide 10 knots.

Cutting-edge equipment planned for the Uthörn II, says AWI, includes an extensive working deck with dry and wet labs, crane jibs for trawl nets and water samplers. Already certain and ordered from Hoppe Marine in Hamburg is Uthörn II’s roll-damping system.

Michael Klages told Maritime Journal that scientific sonar systems under consideration for the methanol cutter include a fisheries type Kongsberg Type EK80 multi-frequency echosounder, which will locate and identify fish-swarms. An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) - type Ocean Marine from Teledyne Marine or equivalent - as well as a

multi-beam Kongsberg EM2040 echo-sounder or equivalent and a sediment profiling sonar system Type Innomar SES 2000 or equivalent are also on the list, he revealed.

AWI Director Professor Antje Boetius said that “the most interesting aspect” of Uthörn II remains its methanol propulsion system. One major advantage, she noted, was that once methanol production was combined with renewable energies the newbuild could operate virtually CO2-neutral.

The AWI said it plans to conclude a supply contract for green methanol so that CO2 neutrality is possible from ship handover in 2022 and says that medium-term it may also be possible to produce methanol in Bremerhaven.

Michael Klages is confident that against this kind of background and once Uthörn II is in service, a planned application for the award of Germany’s coveted Blauer Engel award for environmentally friendly ship design is likely to be accepted.

NEWBUILD TERMINATION Plans for newbuild windfarm vessels have been terminated by a UK marine technology firm

No formal quote or build schedule Referencing InfraStrata’s stock exchange release from 10 December 2020, Triumph said it has “not received any formal commercial quotation and or vessel build schedule, therefore based on not receiving this vital information that forms part of a shipbuilding contract, no contract could be agreed or signed”.

Referring to InfraStrata’s stock exchange release from 4 May 2021, Triumph said: “The requirement to execute ‘Placing and Open Offer’ to raise funds to be able to execute a contract the size of Saipem’s clearly demonstrates that InfraStrata may not have been financially capable of executing the contract with Triumph.”

A section of InfraStrata’s stock exchange release from t30 June 2021 said the LoI “has been set aside for the time being as we do not have a high enough level of confidence in this project progressing to speculatively invest heavily in it at this time”.

Triumph stated in response: “Triumph has cancelled the LoI and has no intention of executing any vessel builds with InfraStrata and or any of its shipyards.”

“The other key point is that this was posted on the London Stock Exchange website at 0700hrs on 30th June 2021, this was before the validity expiration of the LoI and without stating that Triumph had actually issued a termination letter to InfraStrata.”

InfraStrata strikes back In a statement published on its website on 5 July, InfraStrata countered: “We note that in a recent statement Triumph Subsea

Triumph Subsea Services said it has formally cancelled the December 2020 Letter of Intent that was issued to London Stock Exchange-listed firm InfraStrata plc regarding one firm and one optional ST designed 200m x 35m Windfarm Development Vessels (WDV) due to be built by InfraStrata subsidiary, Harland & Wolff (Belfast) Limited.

The company said its “decision to cancel the LoI has not been taken lightly” but it was left with “no other option”.

Services Ltd (Triumph) have made various claims amongst which they claim to have terminated the Letter of Intent (LOI) entered into in December 2020 for a new build vessel.

“As noted at the time of updating the market, the LOI was non-binding on either party, had an expiration date of 30 June 2021 in the event a contract was not entered into, and therefore, by default there is nothing to terminate. Further, Triumph were informed by the Company in April 2021 that the Company had set the LOI aside following due diligence on the credibility of Triumph’s proposal.”

Crew transfer vessels contract win Marsun Shipyard in Thailand has won a contract to build two crew transfer vessels (CTV).

The two Inertia M3 high-speed trimaran CTVs will be built for U-Ming Marine Offshore Company Limited (UMO), a joint venture between U-Ming Marine Transport Corporation and World Marine Offshore (WMO).

“Marsun Shipyard has worked diligently to win the contract in strong competition with numerous international shipyards, and with this contract Marsun is securing a strong position as a high-quality builder for the international offshore windfarm Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV) market,” said the company.

BALTIC YARD POSTS MORE E-BOAT ORDERS A spate of new home and foreign orders for electric and solar-powered boats is keeping German Baltic shipyard Ostseestaal busy and the interest is not expected to decline soon, reports Tom Todd.

The Stralsund yard and its design partner Ampereship have just added an order from operators BSB on the Lake of Constance in southern Germany. BSB said the electro-solar catamaran Artemis would be 33m x 9m and see service from summer 2022. An option for a second ship for delivery 2025 has also been secured.

Ostseestaal Technical Director Thomas Kühmstedt said: “We are entering new dimensions in electric-solar ship business” and described the BSB order as “challenging”.

Ingo Schillinger, the responsible project manager at Ampereship was quoted as saying the newbuilds, for 300 passengers, were bigger and more powerful than any previous all-electric passenger ferryships designed or built by Ampereship and Ostseestaal.

Drawing 1.26m they will have a top speed of17km/h. Each will boast battery capacity of 960 kWh and be driven by two unspecified

75kW rudder propellers. Schillinger also reported building starting on three electric passenger ships for Swiss operator ZSG on the Lake of Zürich.

ZSG spokeswoman Wiebke Sander told Maritime Journal they were for service from summer 2023 and would be the first fullyelectric passenger boats for the ZSG. Equipped with two 55kW Kräutler KRP 75 rudder propellers, the ships are 22.5m x 3.8m with a side height of 2.35m and will carry 61 passengers. Sander said Ostseestaal won the contract because of price, which she put at about SFr 6 million, as well as “experience and

optimised hull design”. No further E-ships are currently planned for ZSG, Sander said, but she noted that the new trio alone would reduce annual CO2 emissions by 100 tons.

Being finished off by Ostseestaal meanwhile for service from August was a 14.65m x 4.5m electro-solar ferry for a local German operator.

It will link the German mainland with the island of Usedom on the Polish border to the east.

Solar panels rated 4.3kWp and 80kWh batteries drive a 60kW rudder propeller and provide a service speed of 8km/h.

Ostseestaal was also readying a 21m electro-solar catamaran.

NEW BOATS UP RHINE POLICE CLOUT A powerful new 17.3m patrol boat has joined the German police fleet monitoring international shipping along 900kms of the central Rhine and its linked canals, reports Tom Todd.

WSP 11 was handed over for Rhine service out of Emmerich, on the border with the Netherlands in northwest Germany.

Emmerich is part of a 900kms long North Rhine-Westphalia waterways police (WSP) district. It covers the Rhine from the Dutch border to Duisburg and includes the Dortmund-Ems, Weser- Datteln and RhineHerne canals.

Police spokesman Stefan Hausch told Maritime Journal WSP 11 was the third of four modern newbuilds being introduced to replace boats now more than 20 years old.

Identical sister WSP 12 was already patrolling the Rhine out of Duisburg after completion last year. The first of two planned, smaller 13.86m patrol boats, WSP 15, was also already in operation out of Münster and monitoring canal shipping traffic as a sister was being built, Hausch reported.

All four new boats are from Siemer Yachservice in Hunte/Ems and are among more than a dozen built by that yard for police in several German states.

WSP 11 is 17.3m loa, 4.4m wide, draws max.1.25m and is powered by two six-cylinder FPT 2004/26/EC marine turbo engines Type C87ENTM 62.11(C90-620).

Each engine is of 331kW output and between

them provide an impressive 50kms/hour.

The two smaller Siemer 13.8 canal monitoring newbuilds are 4m wide and draw max.1.10m. They are also powered by two six-cylinder FPT 2004/26/EC marine turbo engines of a different Type N67ENTM 45.10.

Each is of 257kW output and together provide 45 kms/hour.

Hausch said the technology on WSP 11 was very different to that on previous police boats.

He gave no details but reports spoke of unspecified radar, camera and sonar technology. The old boats also had steel hulls with aluminium superstructures whereas the

Currently the fleet of the North RhineWestphalia WSP consists of ten canal patrol and 12 Rhine patrol boats along with two small boats on trailers.

HARBOUR WORKBOAT IS BERGEN’S ‘SILENT WORKHORSE’ When acquiring a new workboat, both range and environmental credentials were important factors, says Johnny Breivik, Harbour Director at the Port of Bergen The speed and range of the new Sydnes, an Alusafe 1500 MPV from Maritime Partner, meet the first requirement and the battery pack ensures the second requirement are met. -We are taking an important step towards an emission-free port.

“From now on we will be able to work in the inner harbour and along the quays on batteries only. The boat will be able to operate silently and run completely emission-free”, said Breivik.

“When sailing in the fjords, Sydnes will engage the diesel engines, and the range increases considerably. We have a large district that stretches from Fedje in the north to Bjørnafjorden in the south, so getting there quickly means a lot”.

The Alusafe 1500 MPV is fitted with a large work deck in front, bow ramp and crane as well as a spacious wheelhouse.

It is suitable for most tasks a modern port requires. The boat will operate in a large area, so it needs to have both speed and capacity to cover the necessary distances. With the crane and hydraulic winch, the vessel is equipped to handle a variety of tasks: maintenance of port installations, towing of boats, personnel transport, rescue missions, as well as the possibility to assist in oil spill operations.

The boat is equipped with 110kWh batteries from Corvus Energy and 2x510hp diesel engines connected to water jets.

Using batteries only will give the boat a two-hour range at 4-5 knots. Running conventional engines gives a further 5 hours of sailing at 27 knots.

A US boatbuilder has secured a deal to build the full line of SeaArk Marine commercial boat models.

North Carolina-based US Watercraft has entered into an exclusive licensing agreement with Arkansas, US-based- SeaArk Marine to utilize the complete portfolio of its commercial fire fighting, military, survey, and work boats.

“The SeaArk Marine models will be the marquee products for US Watercraft,” says Randy Borges, managing director of US Watercraft. “We are excited to offer new builds of the highly respected and proven designs, as well as providing service to the many dedicated SeaArk Marine customers.”

Dauntless and Commander SeaArk Marine is best known for its Dauntless and Commander lines of aluminium fire and patrol vessels, both featuring the deep-v hull form developed by world renowned naval architecture firm Ray Hunt Design.

Additional excursion, cargo, and shallowdraft work boat models are also included in the agreement. The Hunt design office will consult with US Watercraft on engineering

Over two thousand batteries installed in tug Damen is constructing the fully electric RSD-E Tug 2513, named Sparky, for New Zealand’s Ports of Auckland.

Recently, Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam installed the tug’s 2,240 batteries, totalling 2,784kWh. Sparky will carry out two or more berthing/unberthing operations with up to 70 tonnes bollard pull on a single charge.

Following, it will take just two hours for the tug to recharge to its full capacity.

For redundancy purposes, the batteries are arranged in strings. If one battery in a string were to fail, the others would simply carry on the work.

Ports of Auckland placed the order with Damen in August, 2019. The port’s intention is to be fully zero emissions by 2040. To achieve this, they needed a zero emissions tug.

Damen has delivered seven fully-electric Ferries 2306 E3 for the City of Copenhagen in Denmark, and a fully-electric Cutter Suction Dredger 650 for an Australian client.

The shipbuilder is also constructing fully electric ferries for Ontario, Canada; a Road Ferry 6819 E3 & Road Ferry 9819 E3, as well as six hybrid Road Ferries 8117 E3 for BC Ferries, British Columbia, Canada. The hybrid vessels are being prepared for future conversion to full electric.

Additionally, Damen is constructing nine waterbuses for Blue Amigo to operate in the Netherlands. Three of the vessels will be fully electric, while the remaining hybrid waterbuses will be prepared for future conversion to full electric. Damen has delivered electric vessels with a total of 20 mW of battery power to date.

Work continues on Sparky and Damen anticipates delivery to be end of this year.

Elkon has joined the recently established Co-Programmed Partnership on ZeroEmission Waterborne Transport under the framework of Horizon Europe that was set up following an MoU between the European Commission and the Waterborne Technology Platform. Elkon, with offices in İstanbul and Norway, has become the first engineering company from Turkey to join the partnership.

8 Echandia Marine will supply Damen with LTO batteries for three fully-electric waterbuses

Echandia will supply lithium-titanate-oxide (LTO) batteries for three fully electric ferries that will operate in the Netherlands.

The contract with Damen Shipyards will see the Swedish energy systems supplier provide rechargeable LTO batteries for the first fleet of electric and hybrid ferries for Rotterdam’s public transport network.

“This is an exciting project. The Waterbuses have been designed to deliver an excellent passenger experience. They are also extremely fuel-efficient due to optimal weight, design, and configuration of onboard systems,” said Echandia’s CEO, Magnus Eriksson.

The three vessels are all-electric, steel ferries, to serve ferry routes between Dordrecht, Zwijndrecht and Papendrecht. The ferries are

designed to increase energy efficiency and reduce wake-wash. They will be fast charged at regular intervals, providing uninterrupted service. Echandia’s E-LTO battery system was chosen for its optimal weight and safety, as well as its competitive pricing.

This is the fourth contract Damen has awarded to Echandia and the second part of a project to supply batteries for a total of nine waterbuses.

LTO is understood to be the safest maritime battery chemistry in the market - resilient to external heat and other abuse, preventing thermal runaways. It does not form dendrite like other lithium-ion chemistries, avoiding short circuits and increasing battery safety over time.

E-LTO requires no active measures for water cooling or fire suppression.

A consortium of 26 leading companies and associations, led by DNV, has launched the ‘Handbook for Hydrogen-fuelled Vessels’ to address the uncertainties surrounding hydrogen as ship fuel.

The MarHySafe joint development project (JDP) aims to create a knowledge base for safe hydrogen operations in shipping.

“Green hydrogen is one of the zero carbon fuels that could be vital to meeting the IMO GHG goals, but as with other new fuels, there are still significant challenges regarding its safe and wide-spread implementation,” said Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO DNV Maritime.

Some of the main challenges for hydrogen operations in shipping include the current regulatory framework, which is open to interpretation by different stakeholders, existing knowledge gaps on the safe handling, storing and bunkering of hydrogen, as well as the unique properties of hydrogen that make it challenging to work with.

“This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of what companies need to consider with a hydrogen-fuelled vessel, as well as areas that require further investigation and testing before this technology can be taken up on a larger scale,” said Nathaniel Frithiof, Senior Consultant, Environment Advisory at DNV Maritime and Project Manager for Phase II of MarHySafe.

POWER & PROPULSION Japanese big hitters partner on hydrogen push Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., Yanmar Power Technology Co., Ltd., and Japan Engine Corporation Xxxxx have formed a consortium of Japanese engine manufacturers to pursue joint development of hydrogen fueled marine engines for ocean-going and coastal vessels.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries will develop medium-speed 4-stroke engines, Yanmar Power Technology will focus on medium- and high-speed 4-stroke engines, and Japan Engine Corporation will embark on the development of low-speed 2-stroke engines. A hydrogen fuel storage and supply system will also be developed.

Partly because of this high voltage, Vision is only offering this electric outboard with their own battery package and control system. The batteries have a capacity of 60kWH, enough to give an electric boat a useful range.

In addition to the ongoing marketing campaign, Vision’s team is further developing its distribution channels to support the demand for parts and services throughout North America, Australia and in select countries in Europe. “Our mandate is to disrupt the legacy internal combustion engine boat market with competitive green energy electric boats.”

Whilst this Vision Marine electric outboard produces 30 more horsepower than the electric outboard offered by the Norwegian company Evoy which was claiming their electric outboard was the most powerful in the world, it would appear that Vision may only hold their title for a short while because Evoy already has under development outboards that will produce 300 and later 450hp.

These will provide a direct challenge to the current powerful petrol and diesel powered outboards.

PEM FUEL CELL SOLUTION FOR GROUNDBREAKING VESSEL Future Proof Shipping has appointed Koedood Marine Group as their chosen supplier for the provision of a complete PEM fuel cell system FPS are retrofitting their inland container vessel the Maas to hydrogen power, as previously reported in MJ. The system supplied by Koedood will comprise fuel cell stacks and technology from Nedstack fuel cell technology.

The FPS team has led and guided the vessel’s zeroemissions retrofit design in close cooperation with Koedood, Nedstack, the shipyard and their other main suppliers.

Sealing their commitment this month, FPS gave the green light to Holland Shipyards Group (HSG) to procure the complete PEM Fuel Cell system from Koedood.

Koedood will build three fuel cell units (3x 275kW) and subcontract their partner company and stack provider of choice, Nedstack, to supply the fuel cell stacks for each of the fuel cell units as part of their co-development partnership for inland navigation. During the retrofit later this year, HSG will install the fuel cell units onboard the Maas. The 110m x 11.45m inland container vessel will be retrofitted at their yard in Hardinxveld in 2021and is planned to be zero-emissions and hitting the water 100% on hydrogen power by the end of this year.

The PEM fuel cell system is necessary for converting hydrogen into electricity and will be installed in the cargo space of the Maas. The fuel cell system is triple redundant with 825kW capacity to supply propulsion and auxiliary power.

Proton Exchange Membrane or PEM fuel cells are considered to be the most versatile type of fuel cells currently in production. They produce the most power for a given weight or volume of fuel cell, they are also lightweight with a high power-density and cold-start capability.

A historic wooden ferry that has undergone a hybrid conversion will be part of the G7 summit in Cornwall, UK. Fal River Cornwall’s (Cornwall Ferries Ltd) 1934-built Kingsley II was modernised by engineers from REAPsystems, supported by battery manufacturer GS Yuasa as part of the Innovate UK-supported HEVIMA (Hybrid Electrical Vessel propulsion with Integrated Motor Assist) project.

Chairman of Fal River Cornwall, Tim Smithies, said: “We have found passengers enjoyed the quieter engine operation and also were fascinated by these steps we are taking to address the UK zero carbon goals in the marine sector.”

The HEVIMA project, led by REAPsystems, used the ferry as a test bed for a new electric and diesel hybrid engine backed with lithium-ion batteries. This is the first

hybrid diesel electric engine to be retro-installed on a passenger ferry of this scale in the UK. GS Yuasa worked with the project teams to deliver a safe battery suitable for marine integration and approved by Lloyds Register and the Maritime & Coastguard Agency for commercial use. The Kingsley II also features a HEID Antriebstechni bespoke

clutch that connects directly to the engine, saving space.

Following the installation, the ferry was successfully commercially operated in the summer of 2019 along the River Fal between the ports of St Mawes and Trelissick.

The propulsion system operates on electric power in the Special Area of Conservation in St Mawes and in the upper reaches of the Fal, reducing carbon emissions and noise pollution.

From 9 June, during the G7 conference the Kingsley II will be alongside in Falmouth and available to the press and VIPs for demonstrations and cruises.

There will also be interview opportunities with key stakeholders.

SOME LOOSE ENDS TIED UP IN DECARBONISATION WEBINAR In the final instalment of the first series of the Commercial Marine Network’s Workboat 2050 decarbonisation webinars, our speakers were forging slightly different paths to the common goal of zero emission workboat operations Over the duration of the 5 webinars, an audience of over 2000 registered in total, and our speakers covered a wide range of practical subjects, from early wins that can be made from drop in bio-sourced diesel fuels to full zero emission workboat operations with hydrogen fuel cell or fully electric solutions.

ELECTRIC TUG It was the latter that our 5th episode was tackling, with Cansu Tuncer, Business Development Manager, Navtek Naval Technologies Inc., kicking off proceedings with an introduction to Navtek’s Zeetug project. For followers of marine electrification, Zeetug will need little introduction, as it is the World’s first zero emission all electric, rechargeable harbour tug. It was delivered early in 2020, and has now been working cleanly and effectively in Turkish waters for 14 months.

While Cancu was quick to point out that all electrification projects are unique, and that ‘off the shelf’ solutions are unlikely any time soon, she did point out that the technology, broadly speaking would be adaptable for many short journey vessels.

What came across in the presentation was there’s a lot more to it than just the vessel motors and batteries. Navtek has also invested significantly in its Quick Charging Station, and STEMS, it’s Smart Tug Energy Management System.

HYDROGEN ROUTE Willem Van Der Wel, Managing Director, Windcat Workboats BV, described Windcat’s industry-leading investment in Hydrogen-powered offshore wind crew transfer project. A zero emission H2 powered catamaran CTV is in build as we speak, due for completion later this year, but that is one vessel within a large fleet, and other vessels will be making more pedestrian progress towards the zero emissions goal.

Like all our speakers, Willem was quick to point out that going straight from where we currently are to zero emission operations in one step is neither practical not desirable.

Windcat are looking at a three stage process. Firstly a dual fuel (diesel and hydrogen) technology to reduce emissions by around 60%, then hydrogen only as an internal combustion fuel, for a 98% emissions reduction, compared with current full diesel operation. Finally Willem suggested hydrogen, being used via an onboard fuel cell to power motors, as the full zero emission solution, but one that would require some further technical improvements to make it fully feasible.

CMB, Windcat’s parent company, is working on the dual fuel engines now, and these potentially have the ‘quick win’ benefit of retrofitting into the existing diesel powered fleet.

INFRASTRUCTURE Any true zero emission workboat operations solution of course depends very heavily on the port infrastructure to support it, and Windcat’s first hydrogen vessel will require a road tanker that CMB has also developed to refuel it, at least for its first few years of operation.

Tying the first two strands together, Stuart Barnes, Regional Partnership Manager, The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult presented ORE Catapult’s recently published paper ‘Decarbonising Maritime Operations In North Sea Offshore Wind O&M’.

ORE Catapult has conducted a detailed consultation within the industry to try to work out what risks and barriers are stopping operators taking the plunge into early adoption of decarbonisation technologies. The conclusions make interesting reading, varying from the obvious (high CAPEX costs, doubts over which technology to back), to the less so.

Who knew, for example, that operators want clearer regulation, targets and deadlines in this area? It seems that having some kind of timeline on what needs to be done, by whom and by when, actually makes the job easier.

ORE Catapult are pushing strongly towards technology demonstrations at port scale. Grimsby has been identified as first choice location, as the World’s largest O&M port for offshore renewables. A project here could demonstrate and evaluate key technologies such as onshore and offshore hydrogen production and storage, and offshore electrical charging.

Dutch shipbuilder Royal IHC has signed an ‘approval in principal’ (AiP) from classification society Bureau Veritas for the design of a hydrogen fuelled trailing suction hopper dredger

In an innovation partnership with the Dutch government’s ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat), Royal IHC is exploring a new type of vessel referred to as the LEAF (low energy adaptive fuel) hopper.

The fuel type was chosen based on its emissions reduction potential, the availability of the fuel and the readiness of the components, including fuel cells and fuel storage. following analysis, hydrogen was found to fit best with the timeline of being operational in 2024. The Rijkswaterstaat has set itself a target to be CO2 neutral by 2030. To achieve this, it sought cost effective solutions for its coastal protection projects to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from 2024.

The project’s next step is to “form a consortium with dredger operator(s) and to define conditions together with the Rijkswaterstaat”, Royal IHC’s Leonard den Boer told CEDA industry News. Project research began in 2019 and, before hydrogen was agreed as the fuel of choice, other options such as methanol and ammonia were considered as possible zero emission fuels for the dredger. The exact capacity of the LEAF hopper is still under discussion.

In a statement, Royal IHC said: “The AiP from Bureau Veritas means that the proposed design of the vessel, encompassing its features and specifications, has been deemed acceptable in this early stage and that the hydrogen system has been safely integrated.”

According to the company, minimal CO2, SOx, NOx and particulate matter is released during the construction of the LEAF hopper, and when operating, like other hydrogen fuelled vessels, it will release only water vapour. Additionally, many design features on the LEAF hopper contribute to low energy consumption, including an electric drive train and energy recovery systems.

Royal IHC has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with India’s Cochin Shipyard to work together in order to provide a trailing suction hopper dredger to be built locally for Dredging Corporation of India (DCI). The agreement aims at designing and building an advanced 8,000m3 and/or 12,000m3 capacity hopper dredger to meet increased demand in India for port maintenance and other dredging services. Vessels of such capacity have never been built in India before.

IADC dredging and reclamation seminar An IADC seminar focussed on Dredging and Reclamation has been planned to take place at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands from 8 through 12 November 2021.

Since 1993, IADC has provided five day seminars especially developed for

NEW INVESTORS FOR ROHRIDRECO DREDGING SYSTEMS Anders Invest, the Netherlands based investment company that focuses on partnering with tech orientated Dutch SMEs, has acquired a minority stake in ROHR-IDRECO Dredging Systems Anders Invest provides financing for both minority and majority interests and has investments in 23 profitable and expanding businesses.

Active since 1960, ROHR IDRECO specialises in the design, engineering and production of wet mining and dredging systems. Its fully electric vessels include suction dredgers, bucket ladder dredgers and clamshell vessels, with maximum working depths of up to 180m. The company also offers a line of pumps developed in-house and suitable for applications both inside and outside the dredging industry.

The systems can be fully automated or operated remotely and are deployed worldwide on a variety of applications, including sand and gravel extraction and dredging of hydrodam water reservoirs. ROHR-IDRECO employs some 80 people and has manufacturing sites at Doetrinchem in the Netherlands and Mannheim, Germany. There are sales and service locations in France and the USA. In 2019, Fulco Vrooland Lob (CEO), Meindert Lodewijks (CFO) and two external shareholders acquired the company.

Anders Invest will acquire its minority stake from the two external shareholders.

Lob commented: “Anders Invest’s focus on sustainable value development based on fair and transparent business is in line with our mission and vision. With this powerful new shareholder on board, we want to give further impetus to our growth ambitions.”

Anders Invest’s managing partner Gert-Jan Huisman added: “Sand is, after water, the most traded commodity worldwide.

With its progressive and zero-emission extraction systems, ROHR-IDRECO is a wonderful asset to our Industry Fund. We look forward to actively assisting the company for the longer term, with knowledge and, where necessary, with capital.”

Lob and Lodewijks continue to be closely involved in the company as directors and shareholders.

Earlier this year, ROHR-IDRECO gave Germany based SL Pumping Solutions sales rights to its proprietary iPump, ranging from 200mm to 1,100mm suction diameter, for applications in the power and gas, mineral and mining, tunnelling and special heavy construction industries.

The iPumps are wear resistant for an increased lifespan, have optimal suction characteristics, are energy efficient, and can be adapted to a wide range of tasks.

First project for Jan De Nul’s largest CSD Jan De Nul’s new mega-cutter suction dredger ‘Willem van Rubroeck’, which features a total installed power of 41,346kW, has started work on its very first assignment in Mauritania.

The vessel is working for developer ARISE Mauritania in the port of capital city Nouakchott where it is deepening the access channel, the port basin and the new berth alongside the new ARISE port terminal.

Willem van Rubroeck pre-cuts the hard sea bed which in turn is removed by the trailing suction hopper dredger James Cook.

These two vessels, assisted by the barges Pinta, Boussole, L’Aigle and Le Guerrier, will remove a total of 3 million m3 of hard soil.

the more northerly port city of Nouadhibou to dredge rock banks in the 3 km long outer channel for mining company Societe Nationale Industrielle et Miniere (SNIM).

In September and October both vessels will return to Nouakchott to complete the works for ARISE.

Both projects are largely carried out in the open sea, where the 151.3m long vessel can withstand difficult conditions such higher waves and challenging weather. Jan De Nul’s largest cutter suction dredger has three 8,500 kW dredge pumps, 8,500 kW of cutter power and can dredge to depths of 45m.

Willem van Rubroeck was lauched in 2017 at the Uljanik shipyard in Croatia but its delivery was delayed as the yard struggled before going bankrupt. In 2020 it was taken to the Remontowa shipyard in Poland where it was completed.

Norwegian davit supplier Vestdavit has so far this year supplied more than a dozen of its unique modular docking head - an anti-pendulation device installed on a davit to counter swing motions of a boat during launch - to both the commercial and military markets, and that is already twice the tally sold in 2020.

The sudden surge in demand can be attributed largely to the need for safe and reliable davit launch systems for workboats servicing the offshore wind sector, according to Vestdavit sales manager William Goodall.

This market trend looks set to accelerate given an estimated 1500 support vessels will be needed over the next decade to carry out wind turbine installation in Europe where investments in new wind farms are set to rise from last year’s record €26.3 billion ($32.1 billion) towards the continent’s goal of 300 gigawatts of installed capacity by 2050.

Maritime data analytics specialist METIS Cyberspace Technology has launched an Electrical Power Profile application that offers a data-based evaluation for feasibility studies covering alternative electrical power sources.

It can measure, report and visualise energy and power consumption across any operational status in the user’s preferred format, offering shipowners greater insights into vessel management excellence.

“A statistical analysis can be generated based on electrical energy consumption

distribution during each operational activity,” said Serafeim Katsikas, chief technical officer at METIS. “With this kind of analysis, a user could evaluate - for example - whether its operations within the port or ECA zone would be made more cost effective by installing a power pack.”

Data acquired automatically Calculations are based on data acquired automatically by vessel sensors, without any human intervention, with even the detection of the ship’s operational status drawing on an advanced algorithm that is

part of the METIS AI platform. This app responds to growing market interest in the benefits of installing alternative electrical power sources to auxiliary engines as a cost-effective and sustainable way of covering energy needs during port operations.

The new functionality builds on the company’s Fuel Oil Consumption Profile Overview, which harvests the vast amount of data available to METIS analytics to quantify all factors affecting a vessel’s fuel consumption based on three months performance and machine learning models.

A vessel monitoring and control system is marking its 20th anniversary this year.

Bakker Sliedrecht’s Integrated Monitoring and Control system (BIMAC) plays a central role in managing the alarm, monitoring and control of vessels, but with the increasing importance of data acquisition and data-usage, BIMAC is anticipated to act as a main data broker in the future.

The communication protocols combined with the capability to store vast amounts of data in a redundant configuration places the BIMAC software in a central position in Bakker Sliedrecht’s Condition Based Monitoring solution. Acquisition, storage, access, visualisation and sharing of vast amounts of data has been a recent focus point. BIMAC can act as collector, making all data available on a single interface for the operator. Trending and analysis can also be undertaken directly.

Another development is the harmonisation of the (visual) front-end of the various automation solutions supplied by Bakker Sliedrecht, reducing the number of dependencies. Robosys’ Voyager autonomous navigation systems software takes information from the onboard chart system, radar, AIS and imagery to plan and execute a safe route entirely in accordance with the collision regulations (COLREGS). It can be calibrated to support any power-driven vessel. It can be incorporated into an unmanned system, or enhance an existing autopilot.

AUTONOMY + WATER JETS = REDUCED MANUAL WORKLOAD New Zealand-based jet drive manufacturer HamiltonJet has signed an agreement with Sea Machines Robotics to develop what it calls a new pilot-assist product By combining the capabilities of Sea Machines’ autonomy platform with HamiltonJet propulsion systems and vessel controls, the partners will be able to offer a helmbased system that reduces manual workload, automates navigation control, increases safety and manages many aspects of routine while allowing crew to focus on the unique, complex and high-value activities.

“HamiltonJet and Sea Machines have developed a concept that utilizes on-board autonomy with enhanced situational awareness (through cameras, radar, AIS, GPS, etc.) in a way that is highly desirable in many manned applications. But we knew it had to be well integrated at the helm and easy for mariners to use. The skipper experience is foundational to our products, so we saw that by partnering, we could deliver a HamiltonJet-branded solution that feels like a native part of our controls,” said HamiltonJet’s Ben Reed, managing director. “We work with a variety of autonomy providers around the world, but we feel Sea Machines is the best partner for this product due to their commercial focus and rapidly expanding technical capabilities.”

An end-to-end management system for maritime operations has announced a significant update to its software platform.

CrewSmart’s ‘CrewSmart v2.0’ offers new tools that support compliant, effective maritime operations. These include an industry-first ‘Compliance Score’ system that gives managers and senior teams an instant view of compliance across vessel and equipment certification, inventory, planned maintenance and safety management.

ANOTHER VESSEL AUTONOMY MILESTONE FOR SEA-KIT The first ever Unmanned Marine Systems (UMS) certificate has been awarded to SEA-KIT International by Lloyd’s Register, representing an important milestone SEA-KIT has worked closely with Lloyd’s Register since early 2020 in a concerted effort to achieve the highest standards for the Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) sector, culminating with their latest 12m X-class USV for leading geo-data specialist, Fugro, being awarded the new UMS certification on 28 June 2021. Not only is this an important achievement for SEAKIT, but it also represents a significant recognition

by Lloyd’s Register for the wider maritime community.
