COVER SHOT Irish boatbuilder Safehaven Marine has recently launched Port Láirge, a new pilot boat for the Port of Waterford, situated on the South Coast of Ireland.

Safehaven Marine’s Managing Director Frank Kowalski said: “Ireland being a relatively small country means we don’t have many opportunities to build new pilot boats for here, so it was wonderful to have built another pilot boat for Ireland, especially as Dunmore East where she will mostly operate out of is only 60 miles along the coast from us in Youghal, Co Cork.

The Belgium based Jan De Nul Group is using only second generation biofuel for maintenance dredging works underway in the German Port of Hamburg.

The fuel contains no petroleum, instead using processed vegetable waste oil as a raw material, an approach in line with the principles of a sustainable circular economy.

Jan De Nul Nassbaggerei und Wasserbau GmbH was awarded the contract for maintenance dredging works in the Port of Hamburg within the scope of a European award procedure. The trailing suction hopper dredgers Kaishuu and Alexander von Humboldt are executing works expected to complete in December, ensuring accessibility to the numerous terminals within the Port of Hamburg.

Thanks to the use of biofuel during these works, emissions of particulate matter and sulphur compounds are being significantly reduced as combustion is much more efficient compared with conventional diesel fuel.

“We have already used this sustainable biofuel for several of our vessels in the Benelux and the UK, said Michel Deruyck, head of Jan De Nul’s Energy Department. “Decarbonisation is at the top of Jan De Nul’s

agenda and is supported throughout the company commercially, operationally and technically. We always strive to go beyond what is imposed on us. We’re going for zero.”

Dredging works are indispensible to ensure the accessibility f the Port of Hamburg and its terminals. It is the only way to ensure that goods can be transported far into the hinterland by sea-going vessels, which are particularly environmentally friendly compared to other modes of transport. Many hundreds of kilometres that do not have to be travelled by truck or by train are a significant contribution to

climate protection. Worldwide, maintenance dredging works are among the most important tasks taking place at large seaports. That this essential task can now be executed in a more sustainable manner will save some 45,000 tonnes of CO2 this year.

There is currently no contractual obligation to use client-neutral fuels because they are not yet available in North German seaports. The dredgers therefore regularly travel to Eemshaven in the Netherlands to pick up the fuel.

Island ferry grants The UK’s Department for Transport is inviting bids for a £1 million grant to boost accessibility for ferries to the Isle of Wight and the Isles of Scilly.

Operators can pitch projects that will help elderly and disabled people travel with confidence on the vital transport links connecting them to the mainland. This funding was initially announced as part of the Government’s National Disability Strategy and reinforces its pledge to improve the network for everyone - no matter the mode of transport.

Bids can either be for equipment, such as wheelchairs

or accessible ticket machines, or building works like ramp levelling or the installation of Changing Places toilets. All ideas will be considered, so long as they are geared towards improving accessibility.

Ferries from the Isle of Wight and Isles of Scilly to the mainland provide vital connections for around 140,000 residents and are crucial for businesses and tourism. There is currently no expectation this funding will be repeated, so the Government is urging operators to come forward now to support this important initiative.

The session will take place as a hybrid event on 3 November at the COP26 International Maritime Hub, hosted by the City of Glasgow College in partnership with Maritime UK.

Full container traffic dedicated to unloading -import- has grown by 42.29% in the month of September at Port of Valencia and cargo -export- has grown by 17.22%.This trend is also reflected in the year-on-year data for the period October 2020-September 2021, when 1,084,356 export containers have been registered, 17.85% more than in October 2019-September 2020.

During this time, import TEUs - or 6.1-metre container equivalent units amounted to 810,735, 16.18% more than in October 2019September 2020.

Maritime technology company ZeroNorth has announced the appointment of Pelle Sommansson as its new Chief Product and AI Officer.

Pelle joins ZeroNorth from Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where he was a Partner and focused on large-scale data democratisation efforts.

Empire Offshore Wind, a joint venture between Equinor and BP, has selected Vestas as its preferred supplier for wind turbine generators for both Empire Wind I and Empire Wind II, one of the largest offshore wind projects in the US. The preferred supplier agreement is one of the largest of its kind to be announced in the US.

Dutch dredging majors Boskalis and Van Oord have been jointly contracted for the deepening of the inner harbour area of Harwich Haven UK in a 50-50 contract valued at €140m.

Under the agreement, Boskalis and van Oord will dredge the Harwich approach channel and inner harbour from 14.5m to 16m to allow the largest containrships to call at Harwich Haven and the Port of Felixstowe. Felixstowe is the UK’s busiest container port, handling some 48% of Britain’s box trade. The ports of Ipswich and Mistley are also accessible through Harwich Haven.

Key to the contract is a specification for the consortium’s use of sustainable biofuel, which can be acquired in different formulations so as to be alike for like replacement for heavy fuel oil, marine diesel oil or LNG and can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40%. Historically, Bosklais has teamed with biofuel supplier Goodfuels while Van Oord embarked on a pilot study in partnership with Shell.

The pressure is on for ports across the UK as Britain adapts to a new regime of post-Brexit customs regulations. This, as well as global disruption brought on

by Covid-19, are forming a one-two punch causing major congestion and increased pressure at ports. A recent report

by Hamburg based global container logistics experts Container xChange points to ‘more complicated dual-Customs regimes’ which are likely to be ‘a factor in logistics bottlenecks’ independent of Covid-19.

A report late last year by the UK Ports Major Ports Group trade association estimated that 22% to 60% of cargo volumes, with reference to 2018 totals, could switch to other ports outside the Calais-Dover corridor and, in doing so, would make the best use of UK port capacity.

Turbine toilets business snapped up Scotland-headquartered offshore equipment specialist, OEG Offshore has made another strategic step in its ambitious growth plans by acquiring offshore welfare and hygiene systems pioneer Pegasus Welfare Solutions.

As part of the deal, PWS founder Dan Greeves has joined OEG as Head of Renewables.

Engineer Greeves’ invention of the world’s first offshore wind turbine intower toilet was hailed as an industry gamechanger when it was released last year. As reported in last month’s MJ the product won a first order by Swedish energy group Vattenfall for a unit for every turbine on its Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm, renowned for its ‘firsts’ and

industry innovation.

OEG Chief Executive Officer John Heiton said Norfolkbased PWS was a perfect fit as OEG reshaped its portfolio in line with the energy transition and expanded its global footprint.

“Dan has developed patented products that have addressed the ‘elephant in the room’ in offshore wind and deliver real results for developers by improving safety and productivity, as well as addressing the important diversity issue in the sector.”

PWS will be retained as a separate brand within OEG Offshore. It is hoped that the introduction of toilets on turbines will go some way to rectify the current gender imbalance in the offshore wind workforce.

This latest purchase brings its wholly owned fleet to a total of 40. This addition to the fleet allows Briggs Marine to extend its remit further into the renewable energies sector and offer another specialised service option for offshore windfarms.

The FCS 2610, one of Damen’s best-selling designs, has proven its excellent safety and performance record in the challenging waters of the North Sea, as well as the Middle East and other locations around the world. A catamaran design featuring a Twin Axe bow, it is designed to carry up to 12 personnel plus crew, along with equipment and light cargo, at speeds of over 24 knots.

Six commercial RIBs contracted Tyneside, UK-based, offshore fabrication and engineering specialist, CFS have taken delivery of the first of six Ballistic commercial RIBs from parent company CEFO Group.

The custom-built and highly specified vessels are being deployed to support all surface, UAV and subsea ROV inspections on a wide range of critical assets and infrastructure, operating in both the coastal and inland tidal environments, in support of a recently awarded nationwide asset inspection contract.

Dockyard infrastructure KBS Maritime has begun work under a new five-year contract to support the Ministry of Defence in the enduring delivery of critical projects and services at HM Naval Base Portsmouth, UK. KBS Maritime, a KBR and BAE Systems Joint Venture, will provide technology-led, data driven Hard-Facilities Management and Alongside Services to support the mission of the Royal Navy. This work includes strategic estates knowledge management, utilities management and operations, design and build lifecycle and new infrastructure, repair and maintenance of assets and locking, docking and berthing.

Alongside the MOD and Team Portsmouth partners, KBS Maritime will help bring transformational change to the Naval Base through a range of strategic initiatives including investment in dockyard infrastructure, the development of digital solutions and carbon reduction programmes, to improve the delivery of Naval Base outputs.

First woman Chair of IET Council Members of the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) Council have selected engineer Dr Carol Marsh OBE EngD CEng FIET as its new chair- the first woman to be elected to this post.

The IET Council is an international body of 28 individuals from across the globe.

It is responsible for advising the Board of Trustees on the direction and strategy of the IET, to be the conduit for its members, and monitor the governance of the IET while promoting continuous improvement.

HEAVY TURBINE LIFT AT LEITH 8 64 turbine parts including blades and tower sections were taken off the vessel

The Port of Leith recently welcomed the arrival of eight onshore wind turbines as part of the 16MW Howpark Wind Farm to be located in the Scottish Borders.

In collaboration with heavy lift specialists Collett Transport, the turbines arrived aboard the 108 metre EEMS Dublin cargo ship into the Edinburgh port from Esbjerg in Denmark.

Using the port’s multi crane lifting equipment and experienced quayside team, the

64 turbine parts including blades and tower sections were taken off the vessel and transported by Collett’s specialist vehicles to the port’s onsite, bespoke renewables storage yard.

Kenny Williamson, Deputy Port Manager at The Port of Leith said: “It is great to see the Port of Leith busy with onshore renewables.

Projects like these demonstrate our flexibility and capability to handle renewables project work.

DATA STEP-CHANGE A key contract has been awarded for the capture of high-resolution lidar Geo-data along Ireland’s southern and western coastline to create a detailed 3D elevation model.

The project, awarded to Fugro, has been commissioned by the Office of Public Works (OPW), the lead agency for flood risk management in Ireland, to deliver a consistent, uniform and up-to-date baseline elevation model of this part of the Irish coast.

Climate change has resulted in rising sea levels and extreme storm events, which impact both built and natural coastal assets, and Fugro is well placed to support climate change adaptation projects for a safe and liveable world. The OPW has commissioned Fugro to deliver a baseline survey of 1798 km² of Ireland’s south and west coasts to identify areas at current or

future risk of coastal change and flooding. Existing and future surveys can also be compared against this important baseline survey to facilitate enhanced risk assessment of coastal change at multiple scales from national to regional level.

While the Geo-data is primarily being captured to support OPW’s role in flood risk management, it is anticipated to also be a valuable resource for stakeholders including local authorities, consultants, researchers, third-level institutions, and those with responsibilities for the management of coastal environmental or heritage sites.

To ensure maximum coverage of the target area, Fugro is currently acquiring the lidar Geo-data using a specialist survey aircraft and highresolution lidar sensor during low tide conditions.

this ensures that we are able to move the large parts safety from the quayside to our new renewables lay down area.”

Concrete floaters BW Ideol has gained an exclusive and long-term access to Scotland’s Ardersier Port for the manufacturing of concrete floaters.

Both parties have agreed to explore the set-up of a serial production line dedicated to the delivery of locally manufactured floating wind substructures based on BW Ideol’s proven Damping Pool technology.

The Ardersier Port site is the largest brownfield port in the United Kingdom. The site comprising 400 acres of port area with access to a 2.2km quay and 350 acres of statutory harbour authority has been identified as one of three sites on the East coast of the United Kingdom with the size, scale, shape, and location capable of being an Offshore Renewable Energy Hub Port. By signing this partnership, BW Ideol is securing a unique access to a strategic asset, unlocking the bottleneck of port infrastructure availability in Scotland. It further confirms its ability to industrialize the manufacturing of its solution and its leading position on the fast-growing Scottish floating wind market.

Dredging works will commence in October with the port targeting a completion by August 2022.

ERICA GREY Mammoet Moving towards a low carbon future for the heavy industries is a hugely challenging endeavour, especially offshore says Mammoet’s Head of Sustainability, Erica Gray.

“Our biggest hurdle is not the technical challenge, but the need to let go of ‘the way we’ve always done it’. I believe embracing change, taking risks and becoming truly entrepreneurial in our approach is the route to creating a low carbon future.”

Over the last couple of years there have been increasing calls for the world to switch to more sustainable economic models and practices. However, there is a big gap between this demand and what is currently practically possible.

The good news is we are not starting from scratch, Erica points out: there is much knowledge and experience that can be ‘reused and recycled’ for more sustainable applications: “For example, the experience we have built up in load-outs and heavy lifting offshore can be utilized for the efficient execution of wind projects - particularly floating wind, where foundations will reach

over ten thousand tonnes. Modularization techniques - used to deliver more efficient construction for conventional industrial projects over the last three or four decades - will also enable the renewables sector to enjoy faster, safer and more cost-effective projects with potentially lower carbon footprints.”

The wind industry can particularly benefit from expertise from conventional industry: “As hub heights increase and wind turbine components grow ever-larger, technologies developed with different industries in mind will make a big difference. Super heavy lift cranes will help to broaden participation in wind energy by making more ports viable for offshore wind projects, while on land they will allow assembly of huge turbine structures and support the provision of the necessary infrastructure for power distribution networks.”

And it doesn’t end there. New facilities such as waste-to-energy plants, biofuel facilities or co-located steel and energy production plants can all benefit from highly efficient modularization techniques, supported by the heavy lifting know-how and equipment that

have moved modules of over 40,000t.

Besides new construction, there are also opportunities for existing facilities to upgrade to more efficient techniques or to include carbon capture.

In addition to enabling new infrastructure through more efficient solutions, heavy lifting and transport companies can help EPCs and owners to bring down the impact of their own operations by switching to low carbon equipment: “Cranes and transport solutions that are hybrid or electrically powered, such as the electric SPMT or more efficient systems such as our Trailer Power Assist, can help bring more sustainable infrastructure online while reducing a project’s carbon impact. This is of growing importance in the civil sector, where carbon emissions are closely monitored in line with governmental requirements to reduce the carbon footprint of publicly-funded projects.”

Working with low carbon fuels, such as biofuels or fuels derived from waste products, can reduce carbon emissions further. Mammoet has already completed its first project using fuel derived from waste cooking oil.

UNMANNED EQUIPMENT FOR RIVER SURVEY Storm Geomatics have used a SL40 USV supplied by Thurn Group in a recent wide swath bathymetric river survey In early spring 2021 Storm Geomatics were approached by an existing client to carry out topographic and bathymetric surveys on the River Aire, at the village of Newlay, northwest of Leeds, Yorkshire in the UK. The survey was required to provide information for local asset recovery works.

In the extremely shallow river the system supplied by Thurn Group, compromising the Ocean Alpha SL40 Unmanned Survey Vessel (USV) equipped with a Geoswath4 Interferometic Sonar and SBG Ekinox IMU, enabled Storm Geomatics to carry out a full bathymetric survey efficiently and safely in a difficult to access and fast-flowing section of the river.

The 250m stretch of the River Aire surveyed comprised of Newlay Weir, the riverbanks, foreshore, and flood defences and was surveyed with no issues due to the USV’s shallow draught and the Geoswath interferometric sonar’s wide swath, which was able to efficiently survey the river bank-to-bank.

A topographic survey was also completed to establish the geometry of the riverbank, foreshore, flood embankments, walls and ground behind the defences. For this part of the work Storm Geomatics used a combination of the SL40 USV and traditional survey techniques, with a total station capturing a 2m grid and the use of a Trimble SX10 laser scanner. The overlapping parts of the manual and USV surveys were then cross-checked in GIS. The results of the 250m long river survey were combined to form a 3D model, drawings, and a hydraulic model in Flood Modeller Pro. This geospatial data delivery informed the engineer of the current topography and conditions at the weir and the model was used to calculate water levels and flow at different rainfall return periods.

Staying in Turkey, news is imminent of the name of the newbuild MED-A2360 (RAmparts 2300-MM) tug from Med Marine for SAFEEN, the maritime services arm of Abu Dhabi Ports. The tug includes coastal towing as well as conventional shiphandling in its repertoire with Caterpillar 3512 main engines, each developing 1,765kW at 1,800rpm providing performance figures of 60tbp and speed 12kn, Caterpillar also supplying two C4.4 86ekW gensets. Basic dimensions include LOA 23m, beam 10.9m and a draught of 5m with deck equipment including a THR Marine EFTW 300kN towing winch forward and Toimil Marine T12505M/3 deck crane providing a SWL of 1.03t and 10.1m. The vessel will be equipped for firefighting and provides accommodation for six persons.

Refloating the stranded container ship Ever Given in the Suez Canal included assistance from the tugs Svitzer Port Said 1 and 2. Svitzer has now extended its current contract with Suez Canal Authority to include two additional tugs to be built

by Cheoy Lee Shipyard. The current two vessels are Robert Allan Ltd RAstar 3200 designs, also products of Cheoy Lee Shipyard operating out of Port Said at the Mediterranean Sea entrance to the canal and the two new tugs will operate from Port Suez at the Red Sea entrance. The 70tbp tugs will be manned by all Egyptian crews and are due to commence operations in Q4 2021.

Returning finally to Damen, the Netherlands-based shipyard has secured a notable order from Fairplay Towage Polska for a 45tbp Shoalbuster 2711 ICE tug. The vessel is under construction in Poland and will be engaged in ‘diverse operations’ including in the offshore wind industry in the Baltic and North Seas. The 27m long version of the shallow-draught Shoalbuster series is a well-established variant of this popular marque and as is common with Damen’s products able to be modified to suit customers’ requirements including nonstandard features. This particular example is said to ‘stand out’ however as it will be the first Shoalbuster 2711 to feature ice class allowing working all year round in Baltic ports, it will also be the first vessel of this type not only compliant with but certified to IMO Tier III emission regulations.

Fairplay Towage Polska, offshore wind project manager Arkadiusz Ryz said: “This vessel will be the first in our fleet of this power that is able to enter Baltic and North Sea ports with limited depths. I am convinced that this Shoalbuster, meeting IMO Tier III emission requirements, will open up new markets for us. She has the potential to play an important role in developing our presence in the emerging offshore wind industry in Poland. A big advantage of the project is the local content - Damen is building the vessel entirely in Poland. She will be the first such vessel built here, though I think she will not be the last one.”

Damen Shipyards Group has in the past delivered 33 vessels to ADNOC Group, a number now receiving a boost with delivery of six Stan Tug 1606 line-handlers to ADNOC Logistics & Services from Sharjah-based Albwardy Damen.

The client is the logistics arm of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and the 16tbp, twin-screw vessels will provide ‘critical marine services across petroleum ports in Abu Dhabi.’

More delivery news from Damen Sharjah involves Boluda Towage Europe and the Port of Zeebrugge receiving a significant boost with arrival of VB Flandes and VB Samba.

Boluda has chosen the high-spec ART 80-32 Rotortug for these new additions to its fleet, the pair meeting Tier III emission standards and certified to the highest firefighting requirements.

SAAM Towage has increased the number of Sanmar-built RAmparts 2400SX tugs in its fleet to three with delivery of Saam Palenque. The 24m long, 72tbp compact tug previously worked at Izmir in Turkey as part of Sanmar’s own fleet and will join its sister Saam Valparaiso in Panama while the third of the trio Albatros is operating for SAAM in Peru. Saam Palenque’s owner states the ABS-classed tug will be ‘dedicated to our operations at the AES LNG Terminal (Costa Norte), the TELFER Tanks Fuel Oil Terminal and the PPC Cristobal Container Terminal.’

Details have been announced of propulsion and deck machinery packages for Crowley’s eWolf destined to be the US’s first batterypowered harbour tug. eWolf is under construction at Alabamabased Master Boat Builders for Crowley Maritime Corporation and destined for operation at San Diego upon delivery planned for mid-2023. Swiss-based ABB has reported it will provide the ‘end-to-end’ electric propulsion system for the 70 ton bollard pull all-electric tug including a 6MWh energy storage system allowing a full day of typical work before Following last month’s news of development of an all-electric tug Vallianz is making more waves in the region’s ship building sector following a tug order for Taiwan principles.

The contract for a 3,200bhp tug has been secured by Singapore-based Vallianz Holdings Ltd for TIPC Marine Corporation Ltd. (TIPM). The client is a subsidiary company of Taiwan International Ports Corporation, a state-owned company that administers and manages ports in Taiwan and operates a fleet of vessels including tugs, crew transfer vessels and deck barges.

Vallianz will build the new tug at its whollyowned subsidiary shipyard PT United Sindo Perkasa (PT USP) at Batam, Indonesia. The vessel will be based on a design by Khiam Chuan Marine Pte Ltd, a consultancy wellknown for its portfolio of tug designs in Taiwan’s tug market. The 35m long ASD tug is due for delivery in Q2 2022 and will provide 40tbp and be capable of firefighting operations. Once in service the vessel will provide shiphandling operations at Kaohsiung Port.

Ling Yong Wah, Vallianz chief executive officer said: ‘This contract with TIPM marks a new and promising partnership for Vallianz, further increasing the group’s international reach. It also builds on PT USP’s growing track record for construction of harbour tugs following our recent awards for three units of Voith-Schneider Propeller tugs and one unit of azimuth stern drive tug in 2020. Additionally, PT USP is one of the few yards in this region with the track record of constructing tugs with Voith-Schneider propellers. This expands not only PT USP’s customer reach but also the value proportion it has to offer.’

Separately, Se Nesttun, Norway-based Corvus Corvu Energy has been selected by ABB Ma Marine & Ports to supply the energy storage system syst for eWolf comprising its 6.2MWh Corvus Co Orca Energy battery. The company is reporting increased tug industry interest for a all-electric propulsion systems with Corvus Energy USA president Sveinung Odegard stating: “We believe this trend will continue globally due to the proximity to shore and opportunities to eliminate emissions within city limits and harbours. We participated in the first all-electric tug in Europe and are excited to be a part of the efforts by Crowley to build the very first one here in North America.”

‘In a nod to quality machinery’, is how US-based Markey Machinery describes its securing of an order for two DEPC-48 hawser winches for eWolf. Markey states that as a

‘one-of-a-kind’ vessel, stakeholders will be closely following how effectively eWolf operates on battery power before deciding to embrace this new technology.

The winches weigh in at 9.29t each and spool 152m of 23cm circumference high strength synthetic line rated at 390 ton/m breaking strength. A pneumatically actuated band-type drum brake will hold the tow line tensioned up to 278 ton/m with a 50hp AC-variable frequency drive geared to produce line speeds to 88m/min with a ‘motormounted encoder’ closing the feedback loop for extended line pulls to 19 ton/m. Several options are included for controlling the winches independently or joining both for in-port mooring. Setting the tension in render/ recovery mode enables the sensor input to monitor line load and continuously adjust the scope of the line as the tug is manoeuvred, while actuating ‘free wheel’ mode disengages the drive allowing manoeuvring unencumbered by hawser tension.

KOTUG TAKES OVER TOWAGE AT PORT HEDLAND Port Hedland is a major iron ore export terminal with five berths capable of handling large ore carriers. The operation has an equally impressive towage provision including nine Rotortugs operated by Pilbara Marine, a subsidiary of Fortescue Metals Group and after three years of successfully working together Westug and Kotug have ‘mutually and amicably agreed to exit their agreement with regard to this operation.’

Both companies have agreed that Fortescue’s Port Hedland towage service will benefit from having a single party managing operations and believe that a single contractor delivery model will have ‘a positive impact on the management of operations and overall responsiveness to the end client.’ Kotug will retain its existing agreement with Pilbara Marine whereby it supplies the tugs along with overall responsibility for delivery of the towage provision at Port Hedland. Operation of the service was previously subcontracted to Westug and under the new arrangement Kotug has assumed control with Westug exiting the business; it was stated that all existing Westug personnel will be transferred across to Kotug as part of the agreement.

At the time of writing AIS data indicates the ‘RT’ prefixed Rotortugs at Port Hedland as RT Atlantis, RT Enterprise, RT Imperieuse, RT Inspiration, RT Darwin, RT Tough, RT Rotation, RT Endeavour and RT Discovery, all powerful 80tbp RT80-32 variants built by Cheoy Lee/Hin Lee (Zhuhai) Shipyards and ASL Shipyard - Singapore between 2011 and 2015 operating at Port Hedland. The arrival of a second Sanmar-built tug to MedTug SA for operation at Sines, Portugal has highlighted the choices for shipowners when selecting a tug operator.

When, for example, a container ship calls at a major port it will typically negotiate with a tug service provider licensed by the port, the tug operator often independent from the port and ship owner itself. Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has been of note lately establishing partnerships with tug owners, also establishing its own tug operating arm MedTugs (not to be mistaken with other similarly named tug owners) operating at several ports where its ships call. There were reports previously that Maersk was similarly exploring employing Svitzer tugs (part of Maersk) when available for handling its own container ships.

ASD 2813 tug Orlando Onorato is now operating for MSC for its MedTug Antwerp operation. Meanwhile the port of Goia Tauro in Italy now has a 50/50 JV between MSC and the Scafi Group operating under the name of ConTug. MedTug Valencia, MedTug Rotterdam BV and MedTugs Las Palmas are recent additions with chartered and owned tugs appearing under the MedTug banner.

Two newbuilds are now in operation for

MedTug Sines SA, MSC’s Portuguese operation mentioned above with the 2019-built Med Antares joining its 2017-built sister vessel Med Altair. Both are RAstar 2800 ASD tugs launched as Sanmar Terminal XXIII and Sanmar Terminal XXI respectively and previously operating in Sanmar’s own fleet.

Described as ‘state-of-the-art escort/ offshore terminal tugs’ they feature a unique-to-class sponsoned hull form that enhances escort performance complemented by foil-shaped escort skegs.

Sanmar states that roll motions and accelerations are less than half those of comparable sized ‘standard’ tug hulls.

An MTU/Schottel main engine and thruster combination develops a bollard pull of 75 tonnes (ahead and astern).

TUGS & TOWING Finnish propulsion manufacturer Steerprop has won a significant order to supply six of its azimuth propulsion units to a trio of tugs under construction at Turkey’s Uzmar Shipyards.

The arrangement comprises six SP 20 WD thrusters to power three Robert Allan Ltd RAmparts 2300 UZM tugs currently in build at Uzmar Shipyard, the units will each deliver 1,610kW of power. Intended to enhance their reliability they will come with Steerprop’s condition monitoring system. The contract was signed earlier in 2021 with delivery scheduled for Q3 this year, Steerprop states that an increase in bollard pull and improved manoeuvrability for the tugs will be achieved with adoption of electrical steering “that enables more efficient use of the main engine’s power compared to hydraulic steering” adding: “The agile electrical steering system in our Z-drive azimuth propulsion increases overall performance and reduced the running costs of the vessels.”

With an eye to the future, the electrical system can also be upgraded with a battery pack to provide further enhancements to vessel performance and of course lowering the system’s environmental performance.

The steering gear is described as ‘robust and accurate’ offering a constant steering speed claimed to be essential while performing sensitive roles including tanker escort duties. Expanding on this aspect,

Donato Agostinelli, sales manager at Steerprop states: “Since the steering uses power only when actively turning, it is very energy-efficient.

In addition, the electrical steering also produces significantly less noise than hydraulic steering systems and requires little service due to its mechanically simple construction.”

For Steerprop, the contract marks its re-entry into the tug building sector. The company provides automation and electrical systems along with support services in addition to a diverse range of thrusters and is well established in the area of large icebreakers , Indeed Rauma, Finland-based Steerprop states it has delivered units to every third icebreaker in operation globally.

Recognising the popularity of the RAmparts series tugs, Mr Agostinelli states: “We identified a clear customer need and saw that we could make the necessary changes to our base design in the short time we had at hand.

We think this is a great reference to make a re-entry in a segment that is not new to us, but in which we have not been present for a while.”

Technology group Wärtsilä has agreed a contract to support two Brazilian river tugs and follows a similar contract with the operator signed in 2017 covering eight vessels in Paraguay.

The seven-year Optimised Maintenance Agreement with Hidrovias do Brasil highlights how technology including improving data connectivity is making remote monitoring possible and enhancing vessel performances through planning and execution of maintenance procedures. Peace of mind for Hidrovias allows it to concentrate on the core business of operating the Wärtsilä 30 main engine-equipped river pusher tugs in shallow waters and remote locations, conditions that make planning and execution of maintenance procedures difficult.

The agreement includes Wärtsilä Datadriven Dynamic Maintenance Planning and Expert Insight programmes delivering remote operational and technical support. This includes an insight into fuel efficiency and the maximising of uptime with maintenance work carried out on an ‘as-needed’ basis rather than based on a set number of operating hours.

This simplifies spare parts planning and coordination along with personnel training.

service that ‘takes predictive maintenance to a new and higher level’ according to Wärtsilä. It utilises AI and advanced diagnostics to monitor equipment and systems in real time.

When abnormal behaviour is detected, it is flagged to Wärtsilä’s specialists who can support the customer proactively with an appropriate solution to the issue. Wärtsilä adds that its expertise allows the safety, reliability and efficiency of the equipment and/or systems to be greatly enhanced.

8 Wirral UK-based Carmet Tug Company has a significant addition to its fleet in the Voith Schneider-propelled CT Oxton previously owned by Forth Ports as the Oxcar.

Carmet operates a fleet of tugs and workboats and is known for its iconic M.S.C.-prefixed tugs offering a diverse range of services around the Manchester Ship Canal area. The tug is described as having been maintained to a very high standard and a strong addition to Carmet’s local fleet. The 30m long tug was built by Dunston (Hessle) Ltd in 1978 and provides a bollard pull of 30t and will be based at Eastham operating on the River Mersey and surrounding ports supporting local tug companies when extra tug capacity is required.

DOWNWIND TURBINE TO MAXIMISE ENERGY YIELDS A Spanish offshore wind developer has ambitious plans to orientate a turbine to the prevailing wind direction by weathervaning X1 Wind’s X30 prototype is now fully assembled in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, ready for installation. Fitted with a specially adapted V29 Vestas turbine, the unique ‘downwind’ system is able to ‘weathervane’ and orientate passively with the wind to maximise energy yields.

SCALEABLE DESIGN The novel tripod-like platform also features greater structural efficiency, with a lighter and more scalable design, while minimising environmental impact on the ocean.

“We are thrilled to complete this latest milestone as we move towards deployment,” said X1 Wind CEO Alex Raventos.

“The rotor assembly represents a symbolic moment in this project, fitting the blades which will ultimately harness the wind and demonstrate our downwind design. Strong summer trade winds in Gran Canaria brought minor delays after the initial load-out, but this exciting period brings the assembly process to fruition. In the coming weeks, we will engage in cable and anchor installations before the platform is stationed at a 50m water depth for final commissioning. From the outset, X1 Wind has been committed to find a more efficient structural approach for floating wind compared to more traditional systems. We believe we have now developed the technology to take full advantage of the marine environment, while respecting the future sustainability of the ocean. Our system will drive greater structural efficiency, reducing loads, especially the bending moments at the base of the tower, allowing for a lighter design.”

X1 Wind’s platform utilizes the best features of a semisubmersible - with a low draft - and the ability to reach deeper waters by a Tension Leg Platform (TLP) mooring system - with a small seabed footprint.

TOWER STRIKES Co-founder Carlos Casanovas said the industry-wide approach for land-based turbines has traditionally focused on upwind rotors to avoid the so-called ‘tower shadow’ effect. However, upwind configurations require specific measures to prevent tower strikes, with the challenge increasing as turbine blades get longer.

“With 100m plus blades becoming more prevalent in offshore environments, significant measures are needed to avoid tower strikes,” said Mr Casanovas. “This typically involves increasing the distance between the blades and tower applying a tilt and cone angle, and designing more costly pre-bent and stiffer blades, which also makes them heavier. However, these measures come with increased manufacturing complexity, cost and potential loss of power generation. Using a downwind configuration reduces the risk of tower strikes, opening up the possibility of using lighter, more flexible and therefore cheaper large-scale wind turbine designs. These are key characteristics which will enable the development of future ‘extreme-scale’ downwind structures with research already being conducted on 200m blades and 50MW power ratings.”

X1 Wind’s X30 deployment is being delivered in conjunction with the ground-breaking PivotBuoy Project backed by a pan-European consortium including leading companies EDP NEW, DNV, INTECSEA, ESM and DEGIMA and world-class research centres WavEC, DTU and PLOCAN. Supported by €4million from the European Commission H2020 Program, PivotBuoy aims to substantially reduce the current Levelized Cost Of Electricity (LCOE) of floating wind. IMCA EXPANDS OFFSHORE WIND REACH

The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) is expanding its reach in the North American offshore wind sector.

Membership of the Business Network for Offshore Wind (BNOW), the organisation dedicated to building a network designed to usher the US into the offshore wind market, is helping the IMCA make more connections in the industry.

IMCA said it expects its network to expand thanks to its participation in BNOW’s International Offshore Wind Partnering Forum (IPF2021) in Richmond, Virginia, on 24-26 August.

Bruce Gresham, IMCA’s engagement director, North America (pictured), said: “I see IPF as a great opportunity to network with companies working in the industry and sharing what IMCA can offer to meet the more stringent safety management system requirements for offshore operations “Joining BNOW is a key factor in our strategic approach to expanding our reach, and by those means, our members’ reach, in the North American offshore wind industry.”

IMCA member companies are very active in the offshore wind industry globally, working at all development stages from feasibility studies to offshore construction. The overwhelming majority of offshore installations have been carried out by IMCA

member companies. The association has had an active Marine Renewable Energy Committee since 2011, comprising developers, contractors, suppliers, and regulators; and has a long track record of improving safety performance in the offshore energy sector.

Guidance documents developed delivered by the IMCA Marine Renewable Energy Committee include ‘Guidance on the transfer of personnel to and from offshore vessels and structures’; ‘Basic safety training requirements for vessel personnel employed in the offshore renewable energy sector’; ‘Research on personal locator beacons’; ‘Walk to Work (WTW) guidelines’; and ‘Boat landing standardisation’.

Schottel Hydro, Sustainable Marine’s German engineering partner, has collaborated with the world-renowned Center of Wind Power Drives at RWTH Aachen University to test its latest generation SIT250 drivetrain.

The key component, manufactured by propulsion expert Schottel, forms the ‘powerhouse’ of Sustainable Marine’s pioneering floating tidal turbine, converting torque or rotation of the blades into electricity.

The ‘accelerated lifetime testing’ was successfully completed in a 6-month period, replicating five years of operation in the Minas Passage, Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia, Canada - home to the highest tides on earth.

SMOOTH MOVE FOR TIDAL TURBINE QED’s self-deploying tidal turbine platform has rapidly moved from Ireland to Wales showcasing the ease of deployment for tidal energy sector

After two years at sea in Strangford Lough, Ireland, QED Naval’s ‘Subhub’ tidal energy platform - capable of delivering 240kW to remote island or off-grid communities - has been towed over 200 nautical miles to Pembroke Dock in Wales, for the fitting of its new Tocardo tidal turbines.

QED Naval’s, self-deploying, submersible, foundation system, ‘Subhub’, is helping pave the way and showcasing a cost reduction pathway for tidal energy globally. Having spent two years evidencing its durability and operational capability at sea, it has now demonstrated its ease of deployment over large distances and ability to cut costs. QED will now go on to evidence its improvements on turbine yields using Tocardo’s proven turbines, a company it acquired in a joint venture in 2020.

UK Companies like QED are fronting the sector globally with such investment, industry-leading research and cost reductions, in anticipation of UK announcing its new green energy strategy and funding initiatives.

The success of this recent operation is yet another important step for the marine energy sector. It shows that submersible, mobile platforms can be deployed without hugely expensive marine operations, seabed impact, shipping and lifting. It has also shown an ability to deploy in relatively high sea states and wind conditions. QED said they were delighted that its selfdeploying system had shown such robustness, operational simplicity, and an ability to both save cost and deploy in weather where other systems would simply be sitting in harbour”.

QED Naval’s Managing Director Jeremy Smith remarked on the significance of Subhub’s journey across the Irish Sea, “This is a major milestone for the Subhub and the EU’s Interreg TIGER project, which will go on to further validate QED’s Subhub, design tools, as well as the energy yields with our new Tocardo tidal turbines”.

As tidal energy continues to show its potential as a predictable energy source, and the UK attempts to maintain its lead, it is important that such systems are well validated. QED’s

operation, held within UK coastal waters, was reviewed by The Marine Coastguard Agency, who gave all necessary approvals and helped QED set operational best practice for the future with load line assessments, surveys, and certification.

Important insurance verification was also achieved through the use of Marine Warranty Insurance Surveyors.

With Wales’s Mainstay Marine providing yard and fabrication services, Williams Shipping was selected for towing operations who, with their operational bases in Pembroke, Southampton and Fawley will help with ongoing operational requirements for QED Naval and its EU TIGER project.

When used in conjunction with the well proven Dutch Tocardo turbines, which have been in operation for over 10 years - including use in the Netherland’s iconic Oosterschelde Dam - QED’s strategy of collaboration and strong partnering is beginning to pay dividends as it secures its sites and supply chain for the future. With a possible £1.4bn tidal energy GVA by 2030 alone, this vision and collaboration will ultimately benefit both the prosperity of the sector and the UK economy as a whole.

This success demonstrates again Bourbon Subsea Services’ expertise in managing Floating Wind Turbines (FWT) installation projects and its ability to propose innovative solutions to achieve new complex technical challenges while maintaining low costs. Bourbon claims to have ‘installed most of the semi-submersible Floating Wind Turbines from 2.5MW to 8.3MW in Europe since 2011’.

HYBRID CREW TRANSFER VESSEL HST Marine has taken delivery of HST Ella, a new hybrid crew transfer vessel designed by pioneering naval architect Chartwell Marine 8 The formal handover of the vessel to HST, took place at Diverse Marine

HST Ella is the first hybrid Chartwell 24 vessel to hit the water, following her completion at local Isle of Wight shipyard Diverse Marine.

Tom Nevin, Chief Executive Officer, HST, commented: “Modern crew transfer operations in offshore energy increasingly require proven vessels with a powerful presence on the water. At the same time, a future-proof fleet consists of vessels with strong green credentials as the goal of emissions reduction continues to move up the agenda.

The HST Ella exhibits performance characteristics of a market leading standard, demonstrating transit speeds of 10 knots on electric propulsion and 30 knots on diesel, while during port operations, the vessel’s electric operation mode allowed for quiet and zero emission low speed manoeuvrability.

This is enabled by the vessel’s unique hybrid propulsion system. An electric motor sits alongside a diesel engine to drive a high-performance changeable pitch propeller (CPP) system, ensuring superior manoeuvrability and operational flexibility. The system is coupled with the vessel’s advanced hull form for reduced frictional resistance, and its use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO30) as fuel - a market first for a new build CTV. Advanced CTVs such as the HST Ella are increasingly expected to perform a range of auxiliary duties alongside personnel transport. The 26-metre vessel is able to carry 24

industrial personnel alongside a maximum payload of 15 tonnes, ensuring maximum versatility when supporting offshore wind operations.

Following its launch, the HST Ella will depart to begin its maiden contract at the East Anglia 1 (EA1) wind farm.

The formal handover of the vessel to HST, taking place yesterday at Diverse Marine, celebrates the ingenuity of the British shipbuilding sector, and the enviable concentration of this expertise on England’s South coast and the Isle of Wight.

NEW QUAY WALL TO SERVICE WORLD’S LARGEST WIND FARM Work has begun on a new 113m quay wall to moor windfarm Service Operation Vessels in the Port of Tyne, UK Southbay Civil Engineering Limited together with their appointed designer GHD, are currently responsible for the construction of the wall on behalf of the Port of Tyne.

The new structure consists of a driven steel pile combi wall which is tied back to the land with heavy tie bars and anchor piles.

The project is being undertaken to enable the mooring of Service Operation Vessels, which will be used to support the operation of Dogger Bank Wind Farm, which once complete will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world. The Operations and Maintenance Base used to service the wind farm will be located within the Tyne Dock Enterprise Park which forms part of the Port of Tyne.

GROUNDWORKS The new section of wall includes a combi wall which consists of 24 1067mm diameter and 15 1422mm diameter tubular piles. The combi wall will be connected to a new anchorage system located approximately 30m to the rear via a series of heavy tie bars. The anchorage system includes 12 1422mm diameter, and 16 914mm diameter tubular piles. Associated groundworks include the construction of an 18m wide concrete ground slab throughout the length of the quay, with a ground bearing capacity of 10t/m2. Once complete, the quay will include fenders, bollards, grab chains, safety ladders, life buoys and all necessary services to accommodate shipping.

VARIABLE BEDROCK GHD have successfully developed the design in accordance with challenging ground conditions including those arising from unknown historic structures, with the existing site previously used for shipbuilding as well as offshore oil and gas module fabrication. As a result, the construction detail of the new quay wall, in particular, the anchorage system, varies across its length to take account of the existing infrastructure.

Due to variability of sandstone bedrock levels, sections of the combi wall have been designed to include a selection of spigots to achieve the required pile depth for stability purposes.

SOBERING MAN OVERBOARD LESSON The Workboat Association & British Tugowners Association Safety Forum at Seawork Connect detailed a real-world MOB situation

Shaun Mansbridge, Safety Manager at Williams Shipping described a situation that occurred within Willliams’ pilot vessel fleet, fortunately with a happy outcome, that could have gone the other way.

A 13m pilot launch with two crewmembers aboard (skipper and deckhand), was delivering onsigners to a ship at the Nab Anchorage in the Solent, UK. It was Autumn with fine weather and light seas and an estimated water temperature of 13-15 degrees Celsius.

The crew onsigning all safely ascended the pilot boarding ladder to the deck, and the deckhand started passing the suitcases up while the pilot boat’s skipper kept the vessel on station.

Unfortunately the deckhand somehow got a finger trapped in the handle of one of the bags, that the onsigned crew had hold of, and a drop of the pilot boat due to swell caused the deckhand to be lifted clear of the deck and placed, momentarily dangling, in a danger area between the two hulls.

The sobering lesson of this experience was learnt when the skipper attempted to remove the MOB from the water using the ladder sling onboard the vessel. The skipper, despite being fit and in his mid 30s, was unable to retrieve the 15 stone deckhand further than just clear of the waterline.

Soon the deckhand’s strength had been sapped to the extent that he was no longer able to aid in his own rescue, such as climbing a ladder.

The happy ending was provided when the ship they were servicing, saw their predicament and launched its rescue craft with 2 crew aboard, one of whom was able to help the skipper pull the deckhand aboard.

The deckhand was warmed up in the wheelhouse and had a change of clothes in time for the arrival of the coastguard helicopter, which was able to evacuate him for treatment of a broken finger.

MORTAL DANGER The skipper had no choice but reverse the pilot launch clear to lessen the mortal danger the deckhand was in, and the deckhand very quickly dropped from the suitcase into the water.

Although a non swimmer, the deckhand was in a lifejacket and appropriate safety clothing. The lifejacket auto inflated without any issues.

The tide soon removed the casualty clear of the ship, and the pilot launch skipper put the vessel into a safe place to perform a recovery and shut down the engines, and put out a Mayday. As discussed elsewhere several times in this

ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS The immediate learning for the business in this case was to fit all vessels in the fleet with a davit and winch system rated to 250kgs, enough for the lightest possible crewmember to easily extract the heaviest possible crewmember from the water, and Shaun went on to say that davits were his big recommendation for all similar operators. A lesson so nearly learnt the hard way.

The two Associations have recently partnered on a poster campaign to provide an easily digestible heads-up on a few simple MOB dos and don’ts to workboat crews.

HVO: WORKING NOW ON A SITE NEAR YOU The first Marine Civils @ Seawork Connect session on Tuesday 5th October took the use of HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil) diesel out of the realm of theoretical discussion and into the real world

With real case studies and actual proven results on display from all speakers, the Marine Civils component of Seawork attracted an audience of interested potential HVO users from tug operators to wet-side port civil engineers.

Following introductions from Andy Powell of CECA (Civil Engineering Contractors Association) and moderator Chris Cassley of CPA (Construction Plant Hire Association), Andy Powell of the Environment Agency introduced his organisation’s bold aim to get to a net zero carbon target by 2030.

For an organisation the size of EA, with its huge variety of activities and lots of machinery, nine years is a very short time. Actual construction activities make up a hefty 54% of the organisation’s footprint, and half of that comes from concrete, so poor is the environmental aspect of this ubiquitous material.

So, EA has been leading several research projects to find the lowest carbon concrete, and has also been looking at reinforcing materials that are alternatives to steel rods. 3D printing of small concrete structures, such as steps, offsite is also a possible option. With 3D printing, concrete structures can be designed using less material, without sacrificing strength or longevity.

But the organisation has not stopped there, with investigations into site office mains connections, site plant and transport, and alternative fuels.

Indeed Andy’s mention of using HVO in all diesel vehicles on a recent large sea defence project at Llyd Ranges, led neatly onto our next speaker.

Simon Lawford is Technical Sales Manager at Crown Oil, and had some interesting updates on HVO. As a main UK supplier,

he was able to confirm the advantages once and for all: 5 Allows a Net 90% reduction in green house gas CO2 emissions 5 Made from 100% renewable and sustainable waste 5 It’s a true ‘drop in fuel’ with RTFO approval 5 Also gives a significant reduction in tail pipe emissions Should it still be required, Simon once again dispelled any myths that HVO has any similarities to ‘biodiesel’ of old. The ester link that causes diesel bug and cold weather waxing problems with biodiesel blends is simply not present in HVO. It mixes perfectly with old diesel, so there’s no need to drain tanks or lines, and it lasts up to 10 years in tanks and is biodegradeable if spilt.

James Maclean of Land & Water Group was able to corroborate much of this. When the group took a look at its carbon usage last year (3846 tonnes- during a pandemic year!), they realised that they would need to plant nearly fourteen thousand trees to offset it and then let them grow for 40 years!

With lots of existing assets, the option of HVO was described by James as “a lever we could pull right now”. He went on to illustrate how at 66-70p per litre, it compares well with gasoil, and in a recent demanding 600 hour test in an excavator on the Rainham Marshes project, it used 14.1 litres/ hour compared with a previous diesel figure of 15.6. That’s quite apart from the environmental benefits, plus the test was conducted in a piece of plant that moved constantly 21 hours a day, replacing drivers as it went.

James is now such a believer in HVO, he has committed to run all the group’s diesel vehicles, from onshore excavators to its marine tugs 100% on HVO by the 1st of November this year.

SPANISH FAST FERRY REPOWERED Rolls-Royce recently supplied MTU solutions for propulsion, automation and digital service on the Avemar Dos ferry Rolls-Royce’s new MTU engines, new MTU ship automation system, and new MTU Go! tool for remote service have well and truly future-proofed the high-speed catamaran Avemar Dos run by Spanish operator Balearia. Four new-generation 20V1163 M84 units replaced the previous 1163 units. Fuel consumption - and with it CO2 emissions - are 8% lower than with the previous propulsion system. Furthermore, the new Series 1163 units deliver the same power output, but with a 33% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions, thereby meeting the requirements of the IMO Tier II emissions standard.

That means that the crew can benefit from an all-round view of the ferry. The new ship automation system brings not only new software, but new

screens and computers with interfaces to other systems on board. The digital platform MTU Go! allows the customer to remotely access the vessel’s operating data at any time, monitor its condition and predictively plan maintenance.

The Avemar Dos catamaran was built in 1996 by the Austal shipyard in Australia. It went into service in 1997 and following several changes of owner was taken over by ferry operator Balearia in 2008. It originally served the Strait of Gibraltar route between Algeciras and Ceuta. Now the new repowered ferry plies beween the mainland port of Denia and the Balearic islands of Ibiza and Majorca. The 82m ferry can accommodate 855 passengers and 174 vehicles.

Besides the Avemar Dos, the Ramon Lull high-speed ferry was recently re-powered using MTU engines - in this case Series 4000 units. Other high-speed ferries, like Nixe and HSC Formentera Direct, have used MTU propulsion from launch.

Multi-wingsail approval Windship Technology’s patented triplewing rig has received a coveted ‘Approval in Principle’ (AiP) status from shipping classification society DNV. This significant milestone in the company’s history is the result of years of design iteration work combined with the use of cutting-edge CFD to refine the wings before extensive wind tunnel testing and analysis by independent third parties. Each wing has trailing edge flaps that allow for optimisation of the motive force produced for a variety of incident wind angles and, crucially, allow the rigs to produce the highest power density of any current wind-powered solution.

Windship Technology claims that with three rigs set, they can produce all the power required to sail an 80,000 DWT ship on the main long transoceanic routes.

HYDROGEN CENTRAL TO ORKNEY’S BOLD PLANS The £2.2 million HIMET (Hydrogen in an Integrated Maritime Energy Transition) project in Orkney will explore solutions for decarbonising ferries as well as shore-side activities

It is one of 55 projects selected for funding under the Department for Transport’s flagship Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. Led by EMEC Hydrogen in Orkney, HIMET will progress an ambitious programme of activities centred on the decarbonisation of two key local maritime sectors: ferry services and cruise terminal operations.

To decarbonise ferries, various solutions will be designed and demonstrated including hydrogen storage specifically intended for use on board a vessel, and the supply of onboard auxiliary power using a hydrogen fuel cell. A conventional ferry propulsion engine will also be tested running on pure hydrogen.

To develop resilient shore-side power for the maritime sector a hydrogen engine will be deployed at Hatston to power crew welfare facilities at the cruise terminal, and microgrid solutions will be explored to consider future power requirements for ferry terminals.

In parallel, HIMET will carry out research and stakeholder engagement activities to establish how decarbonised fuels (hydrogen and ammonia) coupled with technology innovations can best inform the broader maritime energy transition and help overcome regulatory barriers.

HIMET draws upon leading energy system and maritime expertise locally in Orkney and is strengthened by the involvement of leading technology developers and sector experts drawn from across the UK. The consortium includes Aquatera, EMEC Hydrogen, Eneus Energy, OakTec, Orcades Marine Management Consultants, Orkney Islands Council, Ricardo, RINA, Schneider Electric, ULEMCo, and Urban Foresight.

Once project demonstration activities are complete, HIMET partners will help facilitate uptake across the UK and further afield, demonstrating the maritime working practices of the future.

Fixing supply chain delays Diesel outboard manufacturer Cox Marine has decided to bring its PTT production in-house to alleviate pressures caused by supply chain delays and disruptions.

Cox Marine began production of the CXO300 in May 2020 and has seen demand grow strongly for this high-performance

However, the pandemic has had a significant impact upon the British diesel manufacturer’s supply chain - particularly the delivery of the major component, the PTT (power, tilt and trim) system. To resolve this, Cox Marine has taken the strategic decision to bring the production

of the PTT in-house to its headquarters, located in Shoreham-By-Sea, UK. This enables Cox to keep the production of all sub-assemblies in-house, thereby ensuring that the highest standards are maintained throughout the build process of the CXO300 diesel outboard.

REPLACEABLE BATTERY CONTAINERS SAVE RECHARGING TIME

A rapidly switched over battery container solution will enable inland waterway vessels to operate with zero emissions and no range anxiety.

The first order, comprising three units, was placed by ZES (Zero Emission Services) BV, a Netherlands based company founded in 2020

by ING Bank, energy and technical service provider Engie, the Port of Rotterdam, and Wärtsilä. The order was placed and two containers delivered in June 2021.

The Wärtsilä battery containers are installed on a 104 TEU inland waterway container vessel, which has been modified to allow two units to be mounted onboard. The system enables the vessel to operate on full electric power alone, with no carbon emissions being generated. The energy capacity is equivalent to that of approximately 36 electric passenger cars. When discharged, the containers can be exchanged and charged onshore using energy from renewable sources. WORLD FIRST TYPE APPROVAL Bureau Veritas has granted a first of its kind type approval to a Swedish battery company.

Echandia’s battery system, based on LTO technology, is now type approved by Bureau Veritas.

Magnus Eriksson, CEO and founder of Echandia, said: “Echandia is the only company in the world to have a certified LTO battery system for marine use in tugboats. It is a breakthrough for safe LTO technology and as tugboats and ferries in local traffic increasingly become battery-powered, the future looks very bright.”

IN USE BY DAMEN The solution has proved to meet high international performance and safety requirements, as well as meeting the customer requirements for service life and reliability, which means at least 10 years of heavy operation without interruption.

The first to use the battery system was Damen Shipyards, which built one of the first full-size hybridised tugboats.

“Certification for marine battery use is the most difficult to achieve, which is why LTO technology can now be expected to make an impact in several areas.

Echandia already has a type-approval for its E-LTO system from DNV,” said Jacob Zeidler, project engineer at Echandia.

The electrification requirements for workboats and passenger ferries are higher than for leisure boats. Often, they need to be charged quickly and are usually in operation for long periods without interruption. The energy storage systems (ESS) that are being developed are scalable, air-cooled and modular battery systems based on Toshiba’s LTO cells.

Concerted action Recently a report was published by a group of over 40 leading experts and key stakeholders that came together for a three-hour workshop to identify the strategy priorities for wind propulsion development in the near future.

The report calls on industry stakeholders, technology providers, policy makers, finance and the International Windship Association to work more closely together to reduce or eliminate the remaining barriers that continue to challenge the scaling of wind propulsion in commercial shipping.

COLREGS COMPLIANT VESSEL AUTOMATION Robosys’ latest product, Voyager 100, is aimed at commercial and workboat vessels and is currently going through a vigorous system-verification series of tests In real-world testing, the system is avoiding collisions by making safe and COLREGS compliant decisions autonomously.

For more than a decade, Robosys has been providing Advanced Navigation Systems for manned and unmanned vessels, offering a 24/7 autonomous Situation Awareness capability to keep vessels safe from collision with other vessels or objects. Although Covid-19 has impacted some procedures in the last two years, being able to operate as a manned or unmanned vessel has allowed good progress to be made this year to achieve top performance of the autonomous system.

While initial development work can be made on simulators, the ultimate test of any navigation system is on a vessel at sea. With that in mind, Robosys Automation Ltd opted for the challenging location of the Solent and surroundings as a testing area for their software. It has all the ingredients for thorough testing: busy waterway, weather, a wide variety of vessels from large container ships, through warships to rowing boats.

An important feature of collision avoidance is to make sure the avoiding action doesn’t itself cause another collision danger. There is a set of clear international rules giving guidance on this subject called Collision Regulations at sea (COLREGS) and it is important that these regulations are followed. Voyager

BIODEGRADABLE OIL RESEARCH FOR DREDGERS Bakker Sliedrecht, the Netherlands based provider of electrical and automation solutions for the marine industry, is starting research to determine whether biodegradable oil can be used in submersible motors Dutch dredging giant Van Oord is among Bakker Sliedrecht’s submersible motor customers and, if applicable, would like to use this type of oil on more of its vessels.Regulations for the use of oil are becoming more strict because leaks can have major consequences for the environment.

Bakker Sliedrecht, together with partner INDAR, has developed its own electric submersible motor which allows dredgers to operate at depths to 250m despite harsh conditions. Some 200 dredgers have already been equipped with this type of motor, including some operated by Van Oord.

Such motors can contain up to 1,000 litres of oil for cooling and balancing pressure levels when working at depth.

“Van Oord wants to know whether biodegradable oil can also be used in the submersible motors that we have supplied and will supply in the future, say Wim Verlek and Marcel Bakker of Bakker Sliedrecht. “They already have positive experiences with this in other underwater applications.

You want to prevent environmental damage in vulnerable areas. The risk of such a catastrophe is very small but it can never be ruled out.”

The research will be carried out in three steps. First, the electrical and physical properties of the biodegradable oil are examined in the laboratory and compared with the

current oil. They must not differ too much from each other and the properties must remain within a certain range. In the next phase, various parts of the underwater motor are exposed to the new oil. The samples of windings, internal coating, cable insulation and other materials are immersed for several months in biodegradable oil that is heated to operating temperature. It is then determined whether the deviation is acceptable. In the third phase, the rubber O-rings and Simmerings are checked to determine if they are resistant to the new oil. If not, they can possibly be replaced by a different type of rubber.

If all tests are positive, a pilot will be conducted in which biodegradable oil is actually used in the submerged motor of a trailing suction hopper dredger.

Pre-development dredging at Ystad One of Sweden’s largest ferry ports has begun a large expansion program that will result in two new ferry terminals.

In May of 2019, Danish dredging specialist company Rohde Nielsen A/S started the dredging and reclamation project for the port expansion of Ystad Harbour, to accommodate the construction of two new ferry terminals.

In the beginning of the project trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs) Idun R and Thor R were utilised to deliver around 300.000 m3 of sand from an extraction area.

Then BHD Gungner R, BD Ajax R and GD Tjalfe R were utilised to dredge the scope of around 800.000 m3 of clay. The material was unloaded onto trucks or pumped into the

reclamation area, which paves the way for further expansion of the port’s industrial area.

Rohde Nielsen’s hopper barges, barge unloaders, tug boats and survey vessels also contributed greatly to the success of the project. Amongst other things, the scope also included precise mechanical dredging for underwater concrete casting and filling of precast pier heads.

The dredging component of the project was finished in May of 2020.

13 CONTRACTS AND COUNTING FOR 2021 Ampelmann, the Dutch offshore access provider, has signed 13 contracts in European offshore wind in the first half of 2021 With these contracts, the company enables the installation and maintenance of wind farms by providing motion compensated gangway solutions for both personnel and cargo transfer.

“Securing these projects has brought us new opportunities to deliver the highest level of safety to offshore operations,” said Bob Rollerman, Business Developer for Europe at Ampelmann. “It has been a true team effort, with colleagues from across the region working hard to bring those contracts in. We are also happy to be working with both recurring and new clients to make their operations easier on the open sea.”

FLAGSHIP SYSTEM All 13 campaigns feature the company’s A-type and E1000 systems. Two of the projects will make use of the company’s A-hoist add-on, a recent innovation that enables its flagship system, the A-type, to lift and transfer cargo up to 240kg in a safe and efficient manner. This is particularly important in operations where tools and parts need to be brought to and from the offshore platform.

For larger cargo operations, Ampelmann is using the E1000, which can transfer loads up to 1 ton and fully compensate for the motions of the vessel in high sea states.

The A-type and E1000 systems are supporting the installation of several new windfarms, among which the Horn Sea Two, Moray East and Hollandse Kust.

Apart from the installation and commissioning of wind farms, Ampelmann’s systems are also supporting multiple maintenance operations. In either case, having a system that is capable of transferring both cargo and personnel has proven to be crucial.

A large proportion of the 13 contracts have been signed with returning customers - companies that have experienced the value Ampelmann adds to their offshore operations. In order to further improve its offering, the Dutch offshore access provider now also offers access to Ampelmann Insights, its data-driven platform that gives clients a detailed look into their day-to-day operations. This includes the number of transfers they’ve completed, the performance of the system as well as a workability forecast based on sea and weather conditions.

Ampelmann claims it has enabled the safe transfer of more than 22,000 people and close to 1.5 million kg of cargo in these 13 new projects so far.

FIRST PROJECT IN FRENCH WATERS Among the recently secured projects is one in France, a new market for Ampelmann, where it is supporting the installation of the foundation of a wind farm. This also happens to be the company’s first commercial offshore wind project in France.

Motion compensated gangway back aboard ‘Oceanic’ Allseas has awarded Netherlands-based offshore equipment company SMST a new rental contract for a motion compensated gangway.

The contract also includes operating crew, and relates to personnel transfer operations in UK waters.

In July, the commissioning team of SMST mobilized the gangway, the Telescopic Access Bridge M-Series (TAB-M), on board the offshore construction vessel Oceanic. The vessel provides construction support and accommodation for the crew that is preparing the eight-legged steel jacket for removal in this third phase of the project. “After successful operations in the second phase of the decommissioning, we have chosen the reliable gangway system of SMST to assist us once more”, said Jeroen van der Sman, Project Manager at Allseas.

In addition to the deployment of the motion compensated gangway, Allseas is also using SMST to operate the system during this project. “We are very pleased to continue our cooperation with Allseas”, says Menno de Jong, Sales Manager at SMST. The gangway on board Oceanic is installed directly on deck to access the jacket structure, whereas during the previous decom phase the topside was accessed via the gangway on six stacking

modules. Menno de Jong adds: “Also during this project they profit from our modular W2W solution that enables continuous and safe access on various heights.”

Large capacity leg crane NOV has been contracted by Cadeler to upgrade the Wind Osprey vessel with a new, large capacity leg crane.

With a second NOV heavy lift crane, Cadeler ensures meeting future offshore heavy lift market demands.

In 2020, NOV announced the manufacture of the new heavy lift crane on the Wind Orca vessel for Cadeler. Within that contract, Cadeler had an option to replace the main

The replacement is scheduled for completion in Q1/2024 and will be ready in time for the next generation of wind turbines.

More investment in cyber security Ports need to better protect themselves against cyberattacks, attendees of the first digital International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) European region meeting were told.

The theme of the meeting was cyber security and digital trust. Jens Meier, IAPH vice president for the European region and CEO of Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), focused on raising cybersecurity awareness. Discussions centred on the need for ports to secure their organisations more effectively to avoid cyberattacks and to ensure a better response against them.

While looking at the actual cybersecurity risk, the targeted attack against the Port of Barcelona in September 2018 was analysed.

Another antifouling ‘technology breakthrough’ PPG has announced the launch of its PPG Sigma Sailadvance NX coating, which is the latest addition to its Sailadvance range.

The culmination of 10 years of intensive product development by PPG’s resin synthesis experts, PPG Sigma Sailadvance NX coating is claimed to ‘solve the shipping industry’s antifouling technology challenges’ by delivering real linear polishing, a minimal leached layer and protection against a broad spectrum of global fouling conditions.

Formulated using PPG’s proprietary zinc methacrylate controlled surface active polymer (CSP) resin, PPG Sigma Sailadvance NX coating delivers ultra-premium performance with minimal speed loss of 1.0% to 1.5% on average over the operational

period as well as improved fuel-saving capabilities and up to 15% CO2 savings.

The coating uses a binder formulation that provides real linear polishing that is unaffected by changing seawater temperatures and minimizes the development of a leached layer.

Tests and applications with existing customers are claimed to show no performance loss over the period of operation, with the coating reliably achieving 45 days of idle-time protection.

It also contains an ultra-strong biocide package that targets a wide range of global fouling growth conditions, from bacterial slime and soft fouling to aggressive animal fouling.

VESSEL REPAIR & MAINTENANCE Lloyd’s Register and Inmarsat have announced an industry-first collaboration that will address challenges experienced during remote surveys.

The new solution uses LR Remote, a specifically engineered application for remote inspection that enables crew members to livestream video, photos and audio from on board a ship to an LR technical specialist located elsewhere and will be empowered

by Inmarsat’s Certified Application Provider (CAP) dedicated bandwidth service called Fleet Connect, available on the Fleet Xpress digital platform.

Fleet Connect provides an uninterrupted dedicated satellite link between vessels and seafarers, offering users function-specific bandwidth that is independent of businesscritical vessel operations or crew communications. Eidesvik and E&P company Aker BP have jointly announced what will be: “a very exciting and future-oriented project” in the words of Eidesvik CEO Jan Fredrik Meling.

Aker BP has together with strategic partners Eidesvik, Solstad Offshore and Simon Møkster Shipping decided to install batteries on three offshore supply vessels operating on long-term contracts with the company. One of the trio is Eidesvik’s platform supply vessel (PSV) Viking Lady. Eidesvik is also set to invest in a corresponding battery upgrade on its PSV Viking Prince, which is also currently working for Aker BP. When the Viking Prince upgrade is completed in 2022, 11 of Eidesvik’s 12 vessels now in operation will be equipped with hybrid battery technology.

Eidesvik and Aker BP are extending their ‘green’ collaboration further with the establishment of a new project named ‘Retrofit’ that will evaluate various additional solutions for converting existing supply vessels to low-emission units.

Retrofit’s mission is to capture emission reductions of 70 percent or more on selected vessels, making them as climate and environmentally friendly as Eidesvik’s Viking Energy, which will be equipped with an ammonia fuel cell in 2024 as part of the European ShipFC project.

The Aker BP-owned supply vessels NS Orla and NS Frayja, which are managed by Eidesvik, are potential candidates for the ‘green’ upgrades, in addition to others owned by Eidesvik.

“We are now working to map available new technologies from a cost-benefit perspective. This is a big task, with several alternatives already on the table. During the next 12 months we hope to have a good basis in place to make decisions on what low-emission solutions we take forward,” says Meling.

NEW VESSEL LIFT SYSTEM AT MANOR MARINE After a period of installation, commissioning and testing, Manor Marine has opened its new bespoke 80 tonne vessel lift in Portland, UK to all customers.

Manor Marine commissioned the bespoke North Sea Winches (NSW) hoist system as part of the company’s infrastructure improvement program, replacing a restrictive older system originally built in the 1940s.

The new hoist system utilises the latest control technology, driving four synchronised winches connected to the refurbished drop dock platform; reusing the original platform permits the hoist to accommodate the main shed trolley system, allowing internal workshop vessel builds or refits to be launched easily. The bespoke design is complemented by an additional winch also supplied

by NSW to assist with the control of larger vessel launches from the main workshop facility.

Jack-up vessel contract DEME has awarded a contract to increase the lifting capacity of its DP2 jack-up vessel Sea Installer.

Huisman has been awarded a contract from DEME for the delivery of a 1,600mt Leg Encircling Crane (LEC) that will increase the lifting capacity of Sea Installer by 700mt.

Sea Installer will then be capable of installing the next generation offshore wind turbines for the 800 MW Vineyard Wind 1 project, one of the first large-scale offshore wind farms in the US. Huisman will replace Sea Installer’s current 900mt crane with a 1,600mt LEC, increasing the lifting capacity by 700mt, yet with a limited weight impact on the vessel.

SEATRIALS FOR WORLD’S FIRST RAMPAGE 6000 Built in Turkey by Uzmar, the first Robert Allan designed Rampage 6000 in the world is successfully completing its mandatory tests. This new design provides a performance vessel for offshore terminal and oil-field support duties such as ocean towing, buoy maintenance, anchor handling, ROV support operations, oil recovery, oil spill response standby and rescue operations.

60 metres long on a beam of 14 metres and a draft of 5.5 metres (dependant on propeller choice), the vessel can boast impressive bollard pull figures of up to 110 tons.

Propulsion is provided by azimuth thrusters up to 3400mm diameter with either controlled or fixed pitch propellers.

Fire fighting provision is to FiFi 1 with dedicated diesel or main engine driven pumps, and accommodation is provided for up to 16 persons.

PRODUCTION METHOD At Uzmar, from the beginning of a project to the end, each piece of work on the vessel has a shop order planned by the Planning Department and a drawing created by the Design Department with the in-house developed SEM ERP system.

The Production Department is responsible for completing shop orders by using the materials described by design.

During vessel production, responsible foremen enter man-hour and compile percentage data covering each shop order with the ERP system. If there are nonconformities concerning drawings or materials, Uzmar’s foremen and engineers use a change request system and create nonconformity reports. These reports are

closed on the system by the creator when the problems are solved.

This circle continues at each station and generates the “Station Based Serial Production Method” that Uzmar uses for each of its vessel builds.

SAFETY FIRST All safety related management at Uzmar such as; the risk assessments, periodical training, health checks, field exercises, certifications, emergency case management systems, legislation, risk assessments and providing certificated tested safety equipment to all in the shipyard, serves only one simple policy: “To provide zero harm workplace” Uzmar’s human-centered approach is vital to provide good and healthy working and living spaces for its employees, subcontractors and customers.

Uzmar maintains high quality, environmental and occupational health and safety standards with Lloyds Register Quality Assurance certifications, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS. Uzmar’s facilities also comply with the terms of NATO’s Secret Facility Security Clearance Certificate.
