NEW CTVs HELP MEET OFFSHORE WIND DEMAND Two new crew transfer vessels (CTVs) have been launched to meet demand from offshore wind farm operators as the UK and European offshore wind power sector expands. Tidal Transit's 19m South Boatsbuilt vessels come from the used market, having previously been owned by international shipping company Vroon. They have undergone full refurbishment at Grimsby Shipyard Services. Ava Sofie was launched on 22 April and Honor Mhari was launched on 6 May. They join Tidal Transit's existing Mercurio-built CTVs and bring the total number of CTVs in the company's fleet to six. Tidal Transit's commercial director, Leo Hambro, said: "We saw the MAN powered Southboats as particularly attractive additions to the fleet, due to shared common parts, and their design,

project to design and build this new class of barge. They have three times the cargo capacity of typical gas barges.” Two of the barges are 110m by 15m with six cargo tanks holding a combined 4446 cubic metres. The third is 110m by 17.5m with six tanks holding 5538 cubic metres. The barges all use a veth pod-drive
system, rather than the more usual shaft propulsion. A fourth sister ship will be delivered later this year. The build project was managed by Imperial Gas Barging, who will also operate the barges on behalf of INEOS. Construction of the barges was split between two Dutch companies: Teamco Shipyard in Heusden, which subcontracted hull construction to Rensen-Driessen Shipbuilding B.V and then had work completed by partner Stocznia Sp. Zo.o. Shipyard; and Veka Shipbuilding Group in Werkendam, which completed all of the construction in Holland. The gas tanks were manufactured by Barlage GMbH.

A UK harbour board has put a service together to help ease the welfare of crews on lockdown waiting at anchorage outside the port. Aberdeen Harbour Board has launched a special scheme to run during COVID-19 aimed at supporting crews. The scheme allows vessels to book a four-hour 'welfare visit' slot for their vessel in the port, instead of making a full port call booking. The slot allows a vessel to stock up on essential supplies such as foodstuffs, fuel, and critical spares. “Dues for coming into the harbour are normally paid by the company chartering the vessel,” explained the Port's Operations Manager, John McGuigan, “and they book a full port call to allow the vessel to be loaded with cargo. During the COVID-19 crisis, however, when there is less work available, we wanted to support vessel owners and crews who are currently not on charter and to ensure their welfare throughout

ROY TORGERSEN NIDO ROBOTICS
Roy Torgersen, founder of Nido Robotics told MJ there's already been a change of plan: “Today, we're calling it 'robots at your service', providing the ROVs and basic training.” Tomorrow, however, the robot will let you know about its own discoveries. When it started back in 2016, the team focused on the affordability of high-quality visual data “but during the next three to four years, we discovered that a lot of companies were depending on external resources for underwater inspection”, he explained. As a result, while the Sibiu Nano was gaining a sophisticated, eight-thruster 'Pro' sister for 300m depths and the company began picking up development awards, another line of thought began to emerge. “While you can carry out regular inspections, it doesn't entirely stop things breaking down when you least expect it,” remarked Torgersen: “Having the tools onsite makes a big difference.” It can also return surprising savings: “One customer is using them on power plant pipes: they first thought they'd just be saving money on divers,” he explained. But more responsive checks showed that anti-biofouling flushes
weren't required as regularly as previously assumed. This didn't just lower the plant's environmental impact, “it also saved as much as half a million dollars a year” said Torgersen: “Nobody really expected that.” Recently, he's seen increased demand from vessel owners “because you can inspect when you have the opportunity... even carrying out hull cleaning or anode changes with no external resources”. But there are also a rising number of assets being deployed by offshore energy and renewables, which will eventually demand a change of approach: “I think the underwater industry is going to have to make the technology truly autonomous,” he said. It is, he explained, down to the physics: radio frequencies can't penetrate water, so remote, real-time operation - of the kind utilised by airborne drones - is likely not practically achieved. As a result, while there will still be some niche, manual systems, the rest will be intelligent “and capable of navigating, detecting issues and making certain decisions themselves”, he explained. However, the revolution is likely to initially proceed in
While you can carry out regular inspections, it doesn't entirely stop things breaking down when you least expect it. Having the tools onsite makes a big difference bite-sized chunks: for example, the company's next step is a ROV reporting system able to recognise and automatically mark points of interest. “It's an exciting time, in the next 10 to 15 years we are going to see some huge technology leaps,” said Torgersen, and added: “A lot of companies are working on different subsets of this problem, so I believe a lot of issues are going to be solved more or less simultaneously.” In fact Nido Robotics is itself quietly working on a future underwater 'drone garage' principle, providing information upload and recharging capacity. He pointed out: “Robotics today is a little like computing in the 80s: back then, only the big Fortune 500 companies could really afford it - but now you have the same capacity on every desk.”

LAKE LOTHING BRIDGE AGREEMENT REACHED
In Lowestoft, UK, Associated British Ports has announced an agreement with Suffolk County Council (SCC) in relation to Lake Lothing Third Crossing. This agreement addresses ABP's concerns about the impacts on port operations and marine safety, of the project to build a long campaigned for new bridge to deal with Lowestoft's major choke point. As a result, ABP has written to the Secretary of State for Transport
formally withdrawing its objections to the project. Councillor Matthew Hicks, leader of Suffolk County Council commented: “We have successfully worked together to come to this agreement. The removal of ABP's statutory objection to the LLTC proposal is a positive development for the project.” Andrew Harston, ABP Regional Director for Wales and Short Sea Ports, said: “ABP's focus will now turn to planning for further

TERMINAL OFFERS KEY EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES A port terminal development in the UK has provided major employment and training opportunities. Construction company GRAHAM said Forth Ports' GB£200m Tilbury2 terminal, an extension of the port operator's Port of Tilbury in London, operated by Port of Tilbury London Ltd (PoTLL), offers an onsite training hub established to encourage local engagement in the project and introduce local people to careers in construction. A number of work placements and work shadowing opportunities have been provided at the terminal, due to open this year. Engineering apprentices have also been employed at the terminal. "The terminal will promote local jobs resulting in a net increase from 8500 FTE to 11500 FTE jobs currently supported by PoTLL. Of these 700 are direct PoTLL employees and this is expected to increase by several hundred as the
new facility becomes operational," said GRAHAM. Marine work managed by GRAHAM includes a 300Lm sheet pile wall; 15nr new berthing Dolphins; installation of a 350T steel bridge, linkspan and 60x40m pontoon bridge; and the dredging of 110,000m3. The former Tilbury Power
Station site supported 1,400 species of invertebrate, among them 159 species of conservation importance and 31 which are rare or threatened. Significant works was undertaken to translocate species to a newly developed ecological compensation site to ensure these important species were not threatened further.

tight lead time and circumstances within a three-month period. The company will also be supporting the operation of the plough system with its plough operators. “This shows the experience and the “can do” attitude that Pharos Offshore Group is proud to deliver to our client base”, said a company representative. “Our aim is to be the partner of choice for Specialist Equipment, Engineering and Manpower in the Subsea Pipeline, Cable Installation and Burial Industry.”
FLOATING WIND MOORING EQUIPMENT CONTRACT The order consists of 33 hull brackets, which are used to attach anchoring lines to the hulls on the 11 offshore wind turbines that make up the Hywind Tampen wind farm. The company will also provide ROV tools for possible replacement of the anchor lines. For Scana Offshore, the Hywind Tampen project will start immediately, with the anchoring equipment being delivered to Kvaerner in the spring of 2021. “We have a long track record of deliveries to the oil, gas and aquaculture market. Now we are looking forward to delivering mooring equipment to floating wind power as well - a market with great potential. In order to get into offshore wind and aquaculture, we have developed new and cost-reducing technology. The Hywind Tampen contract represents a breakthrough for this technology and provides feedback that Scana Offshore's focus on continuous product development is the right way to go,” says Torkjell Lisland, managing director of Scana Offshore. Equinor is Norway's state oil and gas company, and its Hywind Tampen floating windfarm is a project to offset the high carbon cost of extracting fossil fuels from the seabed at two of Equinor's oil fields. It has courted some controversy and even accusations of 'greenwashing', as many would argue that using renewable energy to extract oil is counter productive overall, if that oil is then burned. It could be lauded however for its early adoption and development of floating wind technologies, that may pave the way for further cost saving developments for future offshore wind farms of an overall greener hue.

HULL FLOOD DEFENCE WORK EXPANDS Work has started on the latest stage in the extensive flood defence work that is taking place along the waterfront of the River Humber, UK Overall this flood defence project is scheduled to cost £42 million and now the focus of the work has moved to the city's historic river frontage close to the point where the River Hull flows into the Humber. Work in this area has seen the construction of a lifting flood barrier on the River Hull and the raising of the flood walls along the river frontage. The current work being undertaken involves the construction of a new steel sheet-pile wall that will be built 2.5 metres into the estuary. This will be located in front of the existing edge of the Victoria Pier and this will help to shore up the quayside area as the existing piles of the pier need to be replaced. This critical work is essential to maintaining and improving Hull's flood defences, and is being carried out in accordance with government guidelines for safe working due to the Covid19 outbreak.
Hull has a long history of being flooded from the Humber Estuary. This was seen most recently in December 2013 when a tidal surge flooded more than 260 properties when the city’s defences were overtopped The work is taking place as part of the Environment Agency's Humber Hull Frontage flood defence improvement scheme which will reduce the risk of tidal flooding to 113,000 properties in the city. Building work has been is under way at a number of locations along the waterfront at Hull, including St Andrew's Quay retail park, St Andrew's Dock, Albert Dock and Victoria Dock Village. Led by the Environment Agency, the Humber Hull Frontages scheme has been an opportunity to review and improve a 19 kilometres stretch of tidal flood defences along the north shore
of the Humber Estuary to better protect homes and businesses that are at risk of flooding in Hull. Helen Tattersdale, the project manager at the Environment Agency, commented “Hull has a long history of being flooded from the Humber Estuary. This was seen most recently in December 2013 when a tidal surge flooded more than 260 properties when the city's defences were overtopped.” The work is being undertaken by contractor BMM JV which is a joint venture between BAM Nuttall and Mott MacDonald and all sections of the Humber Hull Frontages flood defence improvements scheme are expected to be completed in spring next year.

15 hectare site in Amsterdam will support offshore wind The Port of Amsterdam will turn a dredging depot at the former Averijhaven into an energy port to serve as a base for the construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms. The port is carrying out the project in collaboration with the province of North Holland, the municipality of Velsen, Tata Steel, and the Port of IJmuiden. Energiehaven will spread over 15 hectares and comprise both the area of the Averijhaven and Tata Steel's 5-hectare site to set up a public harbour area for offshore wind. The site is located on the North Seaside, in front of the sea locks in IJmuiden.
The location is described as ideal for the construction and servicing of the Hollandse Kust West and IJmuiden Ver offshore wind farms, among others, the port said. Energiehaven will feature a quay of 580 metres, 200 metres of which will be a heavyduty quay with a water depth of 12.5 metres. The remaining 380 metres will be a standard quay with a water depth of ten metres. The work on developing the project will start in 2020. The next steps in the project will be to empty the dredging depot at the former Averijhaven and to carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment for the project.

WORKS IN PROGRESS
HANSTHOLM EXPANSION NEARS COMPLETION The Danish fishing Port of Hanstholm's €55m expansion plan is set for completion this summer and the expanded port is expected to attract 450 new jobs, but not just in fishing industries The three-year expansion project includes a new entry to the port towards the north east, a deepening of its waters and new, larger quays as well as hinterland areas. With the largest concentration of fishing industries on the continent as well as being home to Denmark's largest fish auction, the Port of Hanstholm says it is on course to become Europe's leading consumer fishing port. The expansion will bring a new basin, a new entry to northern Denmark, increased quay area and water depth, better navigation conditions and an expanded hinterland. It is also expected to attract 450 new jobs to Denmark's youngest port in the coming years at an economic hub that already employs 1,000 and another 1,300 people in secondary industries. Niels Clemensen, CEO of the Port of Hanstholm, expects a surge in activities at the port in the coming years: “Alongside the port expansion, we want to consolidate our position in Denmark and set course on becoming Europe's leading consumer fishing port. One third of the new hinterland is already rented out, and new activities and projects are coming into the port. It serves as a boost of confidence to our ambitious plans.”
We hope to attract more businesses that can see the potential in establishing activities in what we consider the northwest maritime gateway to the entire European and Scandinavian market “We hope to attract more businesses that can see the potential in establishing activities in what we consider the northwest maritime gateway to the entire European and Scandinavian market, Niels Clemensen continues.” KEY LOCATION With some of the North Sea's best fishing grounds within range, the Port of Hanstholm boasts an ideal location for a top European fishing port. Fish is sold to customers all over Europe, with rules ensuring that fresh fish from Hanstholm must reach their destinations in the EU within 24 hours of sale. Attracting both foreign and Danish vessels, the fish auction trades more than 40,000 tonnes of consumer fish annually, which amounts to €67m in revenue. Among fishermen, the Port of Hanstholm is well-known for offering the highest prices in Northern Europe. This is not least due to the vast network of buyers in Hanstholm and a state-of-the-art fish auction with a very high quantity of goods.
our newly developed port areas to spearhead their operations in the northern parts of the EU, Niels Clemensen explains. While increasing fishing-related capacity and activity is the major priority, the expansion plan also involves the Port of Hanstholm's other key business areas; cargo, aquaculture and wind energy. The volume of freight transport is increasing across Europe, and the Port of Hanstholm is no exception to this development due to its ideal location on the North Sea coast of Denmark. Hence, an additional 30,000 sqm of space is being made available to the west in the form of a multi-terminal with 140metre-long berth - ideal for freight activities. A key to cargo expansion here is the new northern breakwater, extending out from the shore in a curve to provide protection for the new quay, and with a new spending beach on the south pier to absorb wave energy. The new quays will align with the existing inner breakwater line, enclosing a sizeable hard standing area - adding about one third to the harbour area - suitable for a variety of uses. As a result, the port will now have space to accommodate larger and heavier vessels as well as the storage, assembly, and shipping of wind farm components.

BREXIT QUESTIONS The impact of Brexit, however, could pose both challenges and opportunities for the ambitious Danish port. “Everyone is looking into the impact of Brexit, and our hope is that we shall continue to see British fishing people coming to Hanstholm. In our case, we hope that the attractive location of the Port of Hanstholm could lead to British companies in the fishing or energy industry establishing European subsidiaries on

SSEN SHARES SEABED DATA WITH EMEC Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has shared new seabed data with the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) having completed seabed surveys The new surveys were carried out as part of SSEN's proposal to provide a transmission connection to the main GB transmission system. The collaboration opportunity came to light when EMEC contacted SSEN requesting access to the data to supplement their knowledge of the seabed at their grid-connected wave test site at Billia Croo. Subjected to the powerful forces of the North Atlantic Ocean, Orkney has some of the highest wave energy potentials in Europe, with various prototypes being put through their paces at EMEC to learn how best to harness the vast power of the sea.
As a responsible developer, we want to ensure that our proposals demonstrate value to local communities and stakeholders and I am glad that we were able to provide this data to facilitate further renewable energy in Orkney SSEN are providing EMEC with updated bathymetry and side-scan sonar, which have been captured with state of the art technology providing high resolution 3D views of the seabed. This is supplemented with sub-bottom profiling which will let developers planning to test at EMEC better understand how deep the sand is to support mooring design and configurations. SSEN Project Manager, Peter Jordan, explains more: “We recognise that Orkney is home to some of Europe's greatest renewable resources and there is a clear need to provide a transmission reinforcement to allow Orkney to realise its vast renewable potential.
“As a responsible developer, we want to ensure that our proposals demonstrate value to local communities and stakeholders and I am glad that we were able to provide this data to facilitate further renewable energy in Orkney.” John Skuse, Operations and Maintenance Manager, EMEC, said: “EMEC are very grateful to SSEN for providing us with updated bathymetry and site profiling data covering a considerable area of our wave test site at Billia Croo. This information will allow developers to better optimise their device and mooring designs with the confidence that they will match the seabed conditions. This will support time and cost savings for developers installing new devices in the coming months and years.”

TUG DELIVERIES AND ORDERS ROUND-UP
TSM Ouessant is one of Neptune Marine’s popular EuroTug range, due for imminent delivery to Thomas Services Maritimes. This ‘3515’ ultra-shallow draught variant is the largest EuroTug in Neptune’s range News from Sanmar has seen delivery of the 70tbp RAmparts 2400SX Boğaçay XXXIX to INEOS FPS in Scotland, now operating at Hound Point Terminal carrying the name Queensferry. Because of the Coronavirus situation, Sanmar chartered a private jet to bring its own crew home upon the tug's arrival in the UK. They are now undergoing 14 days quarantine as per Turkish government measures. While not quite yet a delivery, Sanmar has launched another Scottish-bound tug Odin of Scapa, the first of a pair of RAL RAstar 3200SXs for Orkney Islands Council. The launch was on schedule and within budget with the second, Thor of Scapa currently ahead of schedule and around two months behind Odin. We hope to report in detail on these significant additions to the UK fleet in due course. Final delivery to report is from the ways of Turkey's RMK Marine with completion of the ASD tug T. Damla 8 to Dİtaş A.Ş. of Turkey, another example of first of a pair, it joins six previous tugs from RMK for the same owner. ABS-classed T. Damla 8 has a LOA of 25.4m on a beam of 11.8m and offers a bollard pull of 70t and speed 12kn. Damen Shipyards Group has reported delivery of seven tugs and to give these the space they deserve we are holding details

over to next month. The Hardinxveld-based shipbuilder is however first item of news as we look at orders announced recently. In the third mention of Scottish-based operators in this round-up Forth Ports Ltd has signed a contract with Damen for an ASD 2312 to operate as part of the Forth Estuary Towage operation. It will provide towage services at various Forth Ports locations as well as for other external customers in Scotland. The ASD 2312 is one of Damen's “next generation” tugs, notable for its twin-fin skeg arrangement, 86% window coverage and impact resistant safety glass. Perhaps most notable is where the towing winch is enclosed by the accommodation, its location close to the vessel's mid-length point allowing the tow line to be routed over the bow for typical port shiphandling operations and over the stern for conventional towing. Forth Ports required its new tug to be available as soon as possible and while it is under construction Damen Marine Services has provided the ASD Tug 2811 Pioneer (renamed Forth Pioneer) to fill the gap. Finally, Turkish shipbuilder Uzmar has signed a contract with SAAM Towage El Salvador for two newbuild RAstar 3200W ASD escort tugs. The 75+tbp tugs will service the Energia del Pacifico LNG project in El Salvador and for Uzmar follows the similar RAL RAstar 3200W Tsimshian Warrior, Canada's first IMO Tier III compliant tug and in operation at AltaGas Terminal in Canada.

Given the time-lag, reports included here largely predate the pandemic's effect on the shipbuilding industry globally but doubtless all involved between client at the start and builder at the end will have been affected by Coronavirus in some way. Meanwhile, let's take a positive view and consider five recent vessel deliveries and four orders. In 2017 Chinese shipbuilder Cheoy Lee commissioned UK's Macduff Ship Design to produce a small workboat to fit its existing range able to be tailored to specific owners' requirements, the first two 14m stock vessels are now complete and available. A conventional layout of forward wheelhouse and large open deck is adopted with towing via a tow post and 10t SWL tow hook. Optional changes include additional forecastle deck providing higher freeboard and improved accommodation, option for lengthening and addition of winches and a crane. Twin Caterpillar C9.3, 416hp main engines drive 1,250mm propellers in Kort nozzles via Twin Disc gearboxes offering a bollard pull of 10t and speed 10.2kn. TSM Ouessant is one of Neptune Marine's popular EuroTug range, due for imminent delivery to Thomas Services Maritimes. This '3515' ultra-shallow draught variant is the largest EuroTug in Neptune's range and third such example following Ella F for GSS Plant (Neptune Equipment BV) in 2017 and Nora B for Neptune Equipment BV in 2019.

BOLLARD PULL CALCULATOR FOR MARINE PILOTS The app, presented by Captain Baykal Yaylai via Marinepilots.com recognises that pilots call on their professional experience when assessing tug number and power requirements in varying conditions of wind, current and waves: assessments that may raise questions from lawyers with the advantage of time if something goes wrong. The Pilot's Tug Assist Tool is based on calculations and graphs in Tug use in Port by Captain Henk Hansen FNI; first published in 1997 by The Nautical Institute, London with a third edition published by The ABR Company Ltd in 2018. The book explains why a safety margin of 20% is included in the calculations and the app has been tested for over two years now, it reported that “it works in a satisfactory way”.

A smartphone app has been launched providing marine pilots with a tool to calculate the number of tugs and power required in different situational and environmental conditions
assessment to judge height of the main deck above water. Current force considerations are similar to those of wind force, the magnitude dependent on current velocity, hull form, area exposed and under-keel clearance where forces due to currents increase when the clearance decreases. While terminals are usually sheltered from waves, wave action may become important above certain threshold values and guidance is provided in judging this value. Once the parameters have been entered Tug Assist Tool displays the results and the total required bollard pull. A further thrust convertor option converts kW and HP to metric tons for bow and stern thruster and knots to m/sec for wind. Another calculation estimates required tug power to stop sideways ship movements at 30m from the berth, useful for ships with dangerous cargo. For large mass, large displacement ships such as tankers and bulk carriers where wind effect is not so important empirical formula is used to calculate required tug power for that class of vessel.

A number of towing reports are worthy of mention, four highlighted here including three involving Emergency Towing Vessels. France's CROSS Gris-Nez contacted the bulk carrier Sea Hermes after it reduced speed while 6nm north of Cap Gris-Nez on the French side of the Traffic Separation Scheme. The vessel, bound for Gdynia was loaded with 49,000t of soya bean meal and reported they were experiencing machinery problems in strong winds and rough seas. Attempts at repairs were unsuccessful and the French ETV Abeille Languedoc was deployed along with a French Navy helicopter which transferred a marine pilot and one of the ETV's crew. Around six hours after the initial alert the drifting vessel entered UK waters and following advice from UK Coastguard Abeille Languedoc took it in tow with the destination Dungeness Bay. Remaining in the UK, a multi-vessel response followed when the fish-farm vessel

Hydro Pioneer with five crew on board suffered engine failure in adverse weather off the west coast of Isle of Lewis. Another fish-farm vessel towed Hydro Pioneer to relative shelter on the east side of Lewis. Stornoway's RNLI lifeboat stood by while the ETV Ievoli Black which was also tasked took the vessel in tow to Stornoway harbour where it was berthed with assistance from a local workboat. Ievoli Black was called into action again when the general cargo vessel Kaami broadcast a Mayday distress message after running aground on a reef north-west of the Isle of Skye. Portree RNLI lifeboat and the Northern Lighthouse Board vessel Pharos also responded, the eight crew members of Kaami being airlifted to safety by a coastguard rescue helicopter. Resolve Marine Group was reported to have signed a LOF and at the time of writing vessels including Forth Warrior, Forth Guardsman and the tug Multratug 3 were in attendance.

INTELLITUG SEA TRIALS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED Taking advantage of advances in automation in the shipping industry takes many forms including, taking a broad view the potential for remotely controlled through to fully autonomous and unmanned vessels- including tugs. MJ reported previously on the joint project between Wärtsilä and PSA Marine to develop the first commercial Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS) and the PSA Marine owned harbour tug PSA Polaris, retrofitted with a suite of Wärtsilä technology enabling autonomous navigation has completed trials in Port of Singapore waters. Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) reports it is fully supporting industry efforts to enable autonomous ship operations within Singapore therefore offering a MASS-ready port. The project is a collaboration between Wärtsilä, PSA Marine, Lloyd's Register and The Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine Singapore (TCOMS) and is co-funded by MPA's Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund. Trials verified Intellitug's capability to avoid a variety of obstacles including virtual and real-life moving vessels, part of MPA's MASS initiative which includes the aims to promote R&D capability in the field and validate concepts of operations and technologies. This in turn enables technology developers, the research community, and maritime stakeholders to capture future MASS-related opportunities. The trials themselves were carried out in Singapore using the “MPA MASS regulatory sandbox”, established to facilitate testing of MASS and other autonomous technologies in a safe and controlled environment within the port. Trials involved the 27m PSA Polaris being fitted with an integrated suite of hardware and intelligent software sensor systems including Wärtsilä's RS24 near-field high resolution radar and its dynamic positioning system providing autonomous capabilities. Data collection via sensors has been ongoing since the start of the project along with development of a collision avoidance algorithm. A new “smart navigation system” developed in cooperation with PSA Marine's tug masters selected destinations for hundreds of test cases to be carried out, the system allowing the user to easily see the routes plotted including collision avoidance in real-time. The smart navigation system sends track and speed commands to the DP system which drives the tug along the route safely at speeds of up to 10kn. These manoeuvres are expected to follow set behaviours and meet success criteria to reach the destinations. At all times PSA Marine tug masters were able to determine if the tests were safe to continue and had full control to abort testing at any time if required. Wärtsilä describe the project as being: “aimed at developing and field-testing intelligent vessel capabilities and viable pathways towards smarter, safer, and more efficient ways of operating a harbour tug. This is achieved through the provision

Technology group Wärtsilä and PSA Marine have successfully completed initial sea trials for the IntelliTug
of human-centric technology, design-thinking, and manmachine collaboration.” Prior to the trials, integration and system testing was carried out using Wärtsilä's autonomous ship simulator and TCOMS carried out further validation of various data gathered from the sensor suite along with real-time performance of the tug through a digital twin incorporating the physical environment encountered in the sea trials. Lloyd's Register's involvement throughout the project supports development of the trial's safety case, while collaborating on the human factors and technology design process. Peter Chew, managing director of PSA Marine said: “PSA Marine is constantly innovating to redefine the capabilities of our tugs. The achievement seen in the IntelliTug project is a testament that with strong partnership, alignment of purpose and the courage to innovate, ideas can be turned into reality. With the incorporation of feedback and experience from our tug masters, the smart technology developed in the IntelliTug project augments our tug masters' situational awareness and amplifies their capabilities. We will continue to work closely with the stakeholders and look forward to future developments of the project.” For Wärtsilä, Thomas Brightwell, SACA software manager commented: “Wärtsilä has taken a rigorous, staggered approach to the sea trials, first to prove the fundamental safety and accuracy capabilities of the system, and then moving on to real obstacle-free path planning. It has further progressed to more complicated test cases, previously attempted in digital batch testing and digital first-person simulation. The design of the test cases was a collaborative effort involving tug masters and a master mariner, with close review and continuous refinement with MPA throughout the project.”

The 35m newbuilding trawler Nesejente was under tow from Gdansk to Hvide Sande when it capsized around five miles from Hanstholm on Denmark's west coast. Danish salvage company J.A. Rederiet was tasked with the vessel's recovery with its floating crane Sanne A and salvage vessel Susanne A deployed to the scene. The initial plan was to salvage the vessel in the area of capsizing, but a change of plan was decided due to adverse weather conditions including a heavy swell at the site. Compressed air was used lift the vessel and put it on its side to reduce its draft, allowing it to be towed to Port of Hirtshals. Once in the relative shelter of the port, and as the accompanying photos illustrate, the hull was gradually lifted

further and righted to an upright attitude by the Sanne A. While large global contractors usually and understandably grab the headlines with major salvage operations, Stenderup-based J.A. Rederiet are typical of the smaller commercial operators offering salvage and towage services on a local basis often able to provide rapid response with that important ingredient 'local knowledge'. Offering a wide range of services covering the salvage spectrum its fleet includes the similar DP1 diving and salvage vessels Mira A and Susanne A along with the 983t lifting capacity barge Barge A and of course, the self-propelled, fully revolving, spud-leg equipped floating crane Sanne A which as well as a 60t maximum lift main hook has two 125t A-frames.

PLANS FOR NEW CELTIC SEA WINDFARMS GAINING MOMENTUM A joint venture between the French oil and gas giant Total and Simply Blue Energy is planning to establish what will be the first wind farm in the Celtic Sea to the west of the UK writes Dag Pike The planned 96MW wind farm will use WindFloat technology based on the floating wind turbines developed by the company. These tried and tested floating turbines were first deployed off the coast of Portugal nearly 10 years ago. The partners have submitted an application to the Crown Estate for the initial project, which is being developed under the name of Erebus. Patrick Pouyanné, the chairman & CEO of Total, commenting on the deal, said, “This confirms Total's ambition to contribute to the development of renewable energy worldwide. Total would contribute its offshore operations and maintenance expertise to the project, as well as the financial capability that floating offshore wind will require to scale up over the coming decade.” Speaking for Simply Blue Energy, its managing director, Sam Roch-Perks, said, “The company is delighted to partner with Total. Together we will progress the first stepping-stone projects that will allow the local supply chain to build up their capabilities to help deliver the larger projects that will be developed for the 2030's”. This initial venture into the Celtic Sea will be based around the coasts of Pembrokeshire and it is likely to use Milford Haven as a base. According to the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, the Celtic Sea could support up to 50GW of offshore capacity, which would support thousands of jobs in both Wales and Cornwall. The Celtic Sea lies between the south of Wales and the north coasts of Devon and Cornwall. It stretches as far west as Ireland and south to the coast of Brittany. Floating wind turbines could ultimately compete with standard offshore turbines, because they can be constructed on land and towed out to deep waters, reducing installation challenges.
However, Christoph Harwood, who is the director of policy & strategy at Simply Blue Energy, was reluctant to say whether floating wind would ever be cheaper than its fixed equivalent. “You avoid some issues, but then you have to wrestle with others. We are a project developer rather than a technology developer.”

AIR CRASH RESPONSE BOAT DELIVERED Spanish boatbuilder Aister has just delivered a new aluminium rescue and firefighting boat to the Airport of Mauritius, in Blue Bay The vessel tops out at 32 knots thanks to its two 250HP outboard engines, and has been constructed to ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards, and designed for rescue in case of air accident, with all that this implies in terms of safety requirements. The vessel is part of a new range of small boats, with different options of customization, design and development, with a hull length of 10 metres and an overall length of 11 metres. The hull has a rigid contour fender of closed cell polyethylene foam, covered with a polyurethane skin, which gives the fender greater strength. This fender has an evolutionary form that Aister has designed specifically for this boat to the needs of the owner. The boat has a full running deck with a walk-around cabin and fire fighting equipment, which consists of a diesel pump that serves two monitors, one at the stern and one at the bow. The pump is located in the aft compartment with a capacity of 240m3 per hour (1056GMP). The start-stop system is controlled from the wheelhouse as well as the power control, but the monitors are operated manually. The pump's pressure and volume mean they can be used individually or simultaneously without affecting the operation. The location of the pump under the cockpit allows the vessel to present a completely clear deck that facilitates the operation of the crew in both firefighting and rescue of passengers. The central cabin, with 360-degree visibility thanks to its side windows and roof lights, is surrounded by two exterior side passages that allow passage from bow to stern facing the monitor stations. Eight folding crew seats are located in the stern. The cockpit, with a very wide load capacity, includes two rafts for one hundred passengers. It's been a busy season for Aister as the yard had just delivered three new high-speed interceptors at the end of last
year. The RAL-1100-ZSF-OPEN vessels were delivered to the Maritime Service of the Spanish Coast Guard (Servicio Marítimo de la Guardia Civil; SEMAR) for their search operations and intervention in the waters of the Strait of Gibraltar, south coast of the Peninsula and Balearic Islands. These boats will be used by the provincial maritime services of Almeria, Murcia and the Balearic Islands to carry out surveillance missions and fight against irregular immigration. The RAL-1100-ZSF-OPEN model developed by Aister is designed and built for high-speed chases, offering its occupants maximum reliability, safety and manoeuvrability. Aister is a shipyard, located in the Ria de Vigo, Spain specializing in the construction of aluminium boats.

Poor data quality costs time and money, making investment in data management crucial, warns an IT company. Improving data quality offers "enormous financial benefits" and increases employee work satisfaction, said Shipbuilder. Geert Schouten, director, said: “Nevertheless, we see that many maritime companies do not work on data quality and that costs a lot of money and time. Some millions of euros (and a lot of man-hours!) slip away while problems, caused by poor quality of your project data, are being solved.” Taking the example of a ship specification document, to which many people contribute, Einte Kamstra, new business & sales manager at Shipbuilder, said frequent issues with data management include the data not being

THE KEEL BULB THAT’S FILLED WITH AIR, NOT LEAD A stabilizer system for workboats using a canting, air filled bulb keel has been claimed to potentially allow 40 days more per year of offshore operations in rough weather. Dacoma and Tuco Marine have joined forces to test the Airkeel technology on Tuco´s ProZero workboat range. The Airkeel is a novel stabilizer for work- and crewboats for the offshore industries developed and built by Dacoma. The groundbreaking Airkeel-technology will be integrated into a 7m long fast workboat test platform from Tuco and for the first time tested at sea. The Airkeel stabilizer combines increased seaworthiness and comfort at sea with reduced fuel consumption - and so another step towards a sustainable and carbon-free transformation of maritime industries. Dacoma claims its patented Airkeeltechnology based stabilizers increase dynamic and static roll stability for fast work- and crew boats from zero to max. speed, enabling at least 40 days more of offshore operations in rough weather windows. In addition, it is effective against seasickness, it is compact, and it saves fuel. “The great thing about our technology is that

it allows our customers to extend their operations into the bad weather window, while at the same time saving money on the fuel bill. That's unique,” explains Arnd Baurichter, CEO and founder at Dacoma in Svendborg, Denmark. First tests will focus on demonstration of heel compensation and optimization of roll damping in waves. The Dacoma stabilizer is based on the Airkeel, a submerged, air-filled flotation body mounted at the bottom of the hull. A computer-
controlled mechanical drive system moves the Airkeel from side to side, stabilizing the boat against roll motion while at the same time increasing its buoyancy. Beginning in early 2019, the Dacoma team in Svendborg managed to bring their patented stabilizer idea from drawing board to full size prototype within just one year. “We worked really hard on this. And it would not have been possible without help from The Maritime Cluster of South Funen and our sponsors from the Danish Maritime Fund and the Innovation Fund. In Tuco, we have found the right partner, located just 30 km from us and with both the boat building expertise and the market insight to help us launch our product,” said Arnd Baurichter.

A well-known marine design consultancy has launched what it claims to be the next generation hull-form for autonomous operations, the 'Pentamaran'. Designed to meet the specific challenges of long range autonomous operations, this five hulled design has been optimised by BMT to reduce fuel consumption and increase its adaptability across multiple applications The hull form has been designed to reduce drag as much as possible and tests have proven it offers significant improvements compared to conventional hull forms such as mono-hulls, catamarans and trimarans. The vessel features a very slender central hull and two smaller hulls or 'sponsons' on either side. The sponsons are set one behind the other and when the vessel is operating on flat water,
The data gathered through extensive towing tank testing is very compelling. For applications where fuel economy matters, the Pentamaran hull form is more efficient than conventional full forms
PENTAMARAN: THE LATEST WORD FOR EVERY UP-TO-DATE MARITIME GLOSSARY
8 The design has been put forward by BMT as ‘offering a myriad of applications’
the forward sponsons do not touch the water, as they provide roll stability effect in waves only. Compared to a trimaran there is less volume permanently immersed and therefore less resistance through the water. Martin Bissuel, Business Sector Lead for Specialised Ship Design at BMT comments, “Our team have carried out extensive work on this. The data gathered through extensive towing tank testing is very compelling. For applications where fuel economy matters, the Pentamaran hull form is more efficient than conventional full forms, which means that using the same engines and the same amount of fuel, it will go
further than any other, making it an ideal candidate for autonomous applications. Looking at it from a distance it may resemble a trimaran but that's where the similarities end. “Compared to a trimaran hull form, lateral accelerations are lower, reducing g-loadings on the structure as well as the antennae and sensors on deck. The wide deck offers a large working area for multi-role capabilities. It can accommodate payloads or interface with other systems such as unmanned air vehicles.” added Mr Bissuel. A key consideration, when a vessel is operating autonomously for long periods of time, is the reliability of the propulsion setup which is essential to sustained operational readiness. Our engineers have therefore integrated multiple independent power sources to increase reliability as well as survivability. The design has been put forward by BMT as 'offering a myriad of applications for defence and commercial innovators'. The design can be custom configured for military, patrol, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and hydrographic survey work.

GERMAN RESCUERS POSTPONE ONE, BUILD OTHERS SK40 - the fourth in a series of completely redesigned 28m Class cruisers for the sea rescue service DGzRS - was to have been named Hamburg on April19th in the port city's Museumhafen next to the prestigious Elbphilharmonie concert hall. Its on-board tender was being named at the same time after a Hamburg city district. The event was called off because of the coronavirus situation, along with a benefit concert for the DGzRS in the concert hall. “At the moment we do not know when the naming will now take place”, DGzRS spokesman Ralf Baur told Maritime Journal. There was however speculation the newbuild might enter service meantime without ceremony and be presented officially to the public later. The new 28m Class is the powerful successor of the DGzR's 27.5m boats of the 1980s. SK40 has an operational range of 600-800 seamiles and a top speed of 24 knots from a high-performance propulsion system comprising two MTU 16V M72 engines. Also on board are two ZF 5000D456 gearing plants with trolling and a 75kW bow thruster. Other on-board power units listed include a Deutz 1013 diesel and a Whisperpower SQ27 diesel generator. Hamburg's on board 8.2m tender has a Steyr SE 236 E40 engine developing 19 knots. As of the start of April the 28.9m x 6.2m SK40 was undergoing trials after completion at Fassmer Werft. Ralf Baur noted small technical modifications over previous boats which, he revealed, would also be incorporated into later 28m Class newbuilds. Baur said SK40's ECDIS system was now entirely Furono instead of Transas, its fire extinguishing system was equipped with Novec rather than FM 200 fire suppression and the boat's daytime luminous coating was foil-applied instead of paintedon. He also reported that SK40 was fitted with a Raytheon-Anschutz Pilotstar NX auto-pilot with Standard 30 Gyro instead of a Pilotstar D with Standard 22 Gyro.

Key shipbuilder endorsement for fuel-saving foil Having tested two Hull Vanes on the lead vessels in a series of police patrol vessels of two types, Damen Shipyards has now ordered four more. Following a European public tender, Damen Shipyards recently built and successfully delivered a 20m Stan Patrol 2005 and a 25m Stan Patrol 2506 to the Dutch National Police. In the bid package, Damen Shipyards introduced a number of solutions to reduce emissions, such as a light-weight composite superstructure and an exhaust gas after treatment system. To reduce the fuel consumption at patrol speed (20 km/h) and to reduce the wavemaking of the vessels, Damen also included a Hull Vane on both designs.
38 | MAY 2020
8 Hull Vane equipped Stan Patrol on test with the Dutch National Police
Invented and developed by Dutch Naval architects Van Oossanen, the Hull Vane is a hydrodynamic wing-shaped stern appendage
which converts energy of the stern wave and of the ship motions into forward thrust. In addition to patrol vessels, the device is very effective on superyachts, naval ships, fast supply vessels and passenger ships. While the 20m patrol vessels will be used predominantly on inland waters, the 25m will venture out in coastal waters frequently, and will therefore also benefit from the reduced ship motions in waves offered by the Hull Vane. With the performance proven on the first two vessels in the series, Damen Shipyards has now placed an order for four more Hull Vanes, to complete the series of six vessels for the Dutch National Police. These vessels will be delivered during 2020 and 2021.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL AWARD FOR UK-BUILT ROV A compact platform Remotely Operated Vehicle has impressed judges with its suitability and robustness for operating in the challenging area of the educational sector The Saab Seaeye Falcon ROV has been voted best educational ROV 2020 by International Ocean Systems magazine. Captain Marc Deglinnocenti, reporting in International Ocean Systems, said: “Congratulations must go to Saab Seaeye, UK, for heading our list with the excellent Seaeye Falcon DR vehicle. The company ensures that all of its ROVs stay highly competitive, and the Falcon DR is an ROV that represents this philosophy by having a fibre optic tether as just one example. It's priced at the 300-metre ROV level, however this ROV has a 1000-metre depth rating. Its power supply plugs into a simple single phase 110- or 230-volt AC wall socket. That gives it an unlimited dive time that's easy to operate with its touchscreen and joystick controllers. The depth and heading sensors (navigation pod), two LED lights and a high-resolution colour camera are standard equipment. With a customisable data screen and a dizzying array of options, this ROV can provide hours of education and data collection at remarkable depths.

Another option is a multibeam forward scanning sonar. Various types of manipulator arms are also available such as a simple three-prong gripstick, a mini cutter arm, a cleaning brush arm or a sophisticated manipulator arm skid. A
Full subsea robotic inspection offering A subsea robotics specialist, has announced the addition of full in-house inspection services, which will complement the range of underwater robotics technologies currently offered to its clients. With a fleet of 51 ROVs including work class, light work class and observation class, ROVOP now has the ability to provide its clients with a complete inspection service, covering the preparation of inspection procedures, project execution offshore, reporting and inspection and asset integrity data management. Working closely with its survey and nondestructive testing (NDT) partners, ROVOP's capabilities include a full suite of inspection and survey services globally, which includes pre-lay surveys, as-built surveys, metrology, decommissioning, pipeline/structural inspections and underwater inspection in lieu of dry docking (UWILD).

metal thickness gauge, Doppler velocity log for auto station keeping, a laser scale, a CP probe to measure electrical currents, an altimeter to measure the distance above the seafloor, and a GPS tracking system are some more options. Many more options are available. The ROV is built in the United Kingdom, and maintains a high resale value. I operated the Falcon DR at Global Diving & Salvage, Inc. in Seattle, Washington, USA, to see for myself how this ROV handles. The extra large diameter thrusters supplied a remarkable amount of power for its size. The controller functions are adjustable, so you can fight heavy currents with robust control settings and then switch to more sensitive controls for delicate work all within the same dive.”
The new service will be headed up by Inspection Manager Andy Freeman and Inspection Services Project Manager Dan Jones, who between them have nearly 30 years' experience in the industry.
SIOT firm enters new era A major player in the Subsea Internet of Things (SIOT) devices, is embarking on a transformation programme to manage its rapid business expansion. WFS Technologies also aims to capitalise on its range of smart products launched over the last year. To enable this, the company has appointed Peter Sharpe as interim CEO, taking over from Brendan Hyland who is stepping down after founding the firm more than 17 years ago in 2003, but will remain a shareholder. Mr Sharpe, who was formerly a non-executive director of WFS and will be working closely with WFS's existing management team during the transition period, said: “WFS has established itself as a

and has the ability to collect side-scan sonar, multibeam sonar, and lidar data simultaneously. Morgan & Eklund (M&E), a Florida based land and hydrographic survey firm, chose the SR-Surveyor M1.8 because of its shallow draft and multiple sensors onboard. “We designed the SR-Surveyor M1.8 to excel at working in hurricane and storm-damaged areas, without putting manned vessels in harm's way. The SR-Surveyor M1.8 is portable, which is key in difficult to reach areas due to downed trees, submerged vessels and debris limiting access to launch areas,” said Don Darling, president of SeaRobotics. “High-quality data is also critical to recovery efforts – they need an accurate picture of the underwater environment to do their jobs safely and effectively.” The optimised sensor suite (EdgeTech 2205, Velodyne PUCK, SonTek M9, and AML MicroSV) provided accurate data and detailed images of the condition of the waterways, which are crucial to the success of the ongoing recovery effort.

PARALLEL MOTION FENDER SYSTEM Twin parallel motion fenders have just been supplied to Ferry Berth 4 at the Port of Hirtshals, Denmark, helping the port to enhance berthing operations Provided by Trelleborg's marine and infrastructure operation, the project required a fender solution that would produce a low line load on the vessel's belting and avoid contact with the vessel's hull. A challenging range of vessel types coming into the berth all required a fender system offering optimal energy absorbtion. Peter Ydesen, Technical Manager at the Port of Hirtshals, says: “The new Ferry Berth 4 is a significant project, which will allow for vessels of various sizes to enter the port at high berthing velocities, including Fjord Line's new longer catamaran, Fjord FSTR. Trelleborg purpose-designed a highperformance twin parallel motion fender, which compresses and adapts to suit each vessel coming into berth - a technology we haven't used in Denmark until now. We are extremely pleased with the company's solution and were thrilled to complete the project on time.”
Parallel motion fender systems have been installed at many of the world’s ports, including ports in Norway and Sweden to ports in Australia, Qatar and the UK Trelleborg's twin parallel motion fender system ensures that the panel remains parallel at berth to avoid contact with the vessel's hull and ensure contact with the belting only. The panel was designed to be 3.7 metres wide in order to evenly distribute the load from the fender and - using a combination of back-toback cone fenders - the fender system is able to use its soft rubber panel to reduce reaction force as much as possible. Trelleborg's twin parallel motion fender system is claimed to have the ability to absorb twice as much energy compared to a regular cone fender. One fender in the system is made from
a hard rubber compound, while the other is made from a softer compound. This enables the twin parallel motion fender system to accommodate the berthing of different-sized vessels. The system can be applied to a wide-range of cargo berths, bulk terminals, oil and LNG terminals and container berths, as well as RoRo and cruise terminals. Parallel motion fender systems have been installed at many of the world's ports, including ports in Norway and Sweden to ports in Australia, Qatar and the UK.

Standby berthing for pilots and tugs UK gangway and pontoon supplier and installer Walcon Marine has returned to Shoreham Port in south-east England 25 years after it first installed a waiting pontoon to replace it with an all-new facility. Located outside the lock, and so available at all states of tide, the heavy-duty pontoon is a standby berth for the tugs and pilot boats that escort vessels in and out of the harbour. The facility consists of three, 15 metres by three metres, heavy duty Walcon Waliflote pontoons plus an aluminium self-levelling gangway (the angle of the steps change with the tide). waterside facility at Woolston, Southampton, and delivered to the site by road while the Walcon Wizard piling barge removed the old piles and drove in the new ones. “We were very pleased to be invited back to Shoreham Port,” said Walcon Marine Managing Director James Walters. “Our heavy duty Waliflote product is ideal for activities of this type and offers a sturdy, low maintenance solution for commercial operators.” “Our original Walcon pontoon stood the test of time in the tide area of the port, so Walcon's proven track record made them our first choice,” added Julian Seaman, Harbour Master and Director of Marine Operations at Shoreham Port.

NEW KIEL CRUISE TERMINAL IS READY - AND WAITING
Photo Port of Kiel
The new €10 million Ostseekai Berth 28 cruise handling terminal in the German Baltic port of Kiel is ready for service - but when it will handle its first ship is now anybody's guess, reports Tom Todd. Terminal operators Port of Kiel reported the 14,500 sqm Berth 28 terminal site complete and “ready for operation” in early March. Its official inauguration had originally been planned for March 4th when Kiel's Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) had been due to hold its annual reception at the Ostseekai at the same time. The IHK however announced it was postponing the popular well-attended event indefinitely because of the Coronavirus outbreak and as a preventative measure. The Port of Kiel followed suit, postponing the Ostseekai Berth 28 inauguration until April 26th and said the first ship handled there on that date would be the 55,877gt cruise ship Vasco da Gama, of Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV). However, Port of Kiel spokesman Ulf Jahnke told Maritime Journal mid April that MVC had since cancelled all calls including Kiel until May 24th. Other major cruise operators like AIDA Cruises, Costa and MSC had also cancelled all scheduled calls until the end of May, he added. As a result, the start of Kiel's cruise season will be “later in the year” and “a new date for the opening

of the new terminal will be announced at the appropriate time”, Jahnke told Maritime Journal. The Ostseekai Terminal is one of four cruise ship handling facilities in Kiel. The new Berth 28 passenger and baggage handling extension facility serves a 285m long berth on 9.5m of water and was originally due to have opened a year ago in time for the 2019 cruise season at an estimated cost of €7.5 million.

It is attached to the original Ostseekai facility opened in 2007 and located on the longer 355m Berth 27. The new facility however covers an operational area which - at 14,500m2 - is almost twice as big as the Berth 27 terminal. It has a capacity of 4,500 passengers against 5,500 for Berth 27. Last year Kiel handled 803,000 cruise passengers.

NEW FERRIES PROMPT KARLSHAMN EXPANSION New larger ferries under construction in China that will operate on the route between Sweden and Lithuania have prompted the authorities at the Swedish port of Karlshamn to expand the facilities for handling ro-ro vessels writes Dag Pike. Shipping company DFDS has invested a total of DKR 2.5 billion in the construction of the new ferries and these are scheduled for delivery in 2021. To meet the requirements of these new ferries and to provide berthing to meet the increased size of these ferries in comparison with those currently operating the route the port authorities t Karlshamn are investing â‚Ź12.2 million in a series of upgrades at the port. The new Ro-Pax ferries will have a capacity of 4.500 lane metres each for freight and passenger vehicles compared with the current largest ferry which has a capacity of just 2,800 lane metres. The new vessels have a length of 230 metres and the new ro-ro berths at Karlshamn with be matched to this size and equipped with a variable height ramp. In addition to vehicles the new ferries will have a 600 passenger capacity
port and will be meeting 20% of the costs of the forthcoming expansion of the ferry/RoRo-terminal. This expansion will include the construction of a 3rd Ro-Ro berth plus the widening of the current No.2 Ro-Ro berth. To meet the increased capacity of the new ferries there will also be an expansion of the lining-up areas for accompanied vehicles and it is planned to include a shore-to-ship electricity power connection for cold ironing. An important part of the new expansion will be the dredging of the newly created berths to allow access for the ferries in all conditions. Currently two ferries run a daily service each way over the 200 miles route and the limited capacity of the current ferries has led to considerable delays on the route.

TAILORING OIL RECOVERY SYSTEMS TO PREVAILING CONDITIONS Framo has developed an oil skimming system based on its well established TransRec platform that can be tailored to meet different operational requirements writes Dag Pike With oil spills occurring in a wide variety of different environmental conditions Framo recognised that oil recovery systems needed to be tailored to the prevailing conditions. Their new product will allow customers to specify a range of options to adapt and change the recovery characteristics of their systems. The area sales manager for Framo, Jørgen Brandt Theodorsen commented, “Regardless of the offshore environment or the characteristics of the oil, the recovery and transfer system provides the capabilities you need to recover more oil when time is not on your side”. The base model of Framo's new system which underpins the newer model has been supplied to over 250 installations and contains all the essential equipment and features that are required for oil recovery operations under most operational conditions. This includes a portable electric remote-control panel that allows operators to be positioned on board the mother ship to have the best view of the operations.
Regardless of the offshore environment or the characteristics of the oil, the recovery and transfer system provides the capabilities you need to recover more oil when time is not on your side With the new advanced system, operators can add control and sensor packages that are designed to offer greater optimisation of the oil recovery process and prolong the operational windows of equipment operating under harsh conditions, the company said. The Framo TransRec system has a range of skimmers designed to handle different types of oil spills. The Framo Wier Skimmer, which is the most widely used, is designed to operate in conjunction with oil booms and it can recover large quantities of
medium viscosity oil. Then there is the Framo HiVisc Skimmer that is designed to recover very thick oils with a high viscosity. Finally there is the Framo Polaris Skimmer that is designed for oil recovery in ice infested waters which can present a growing challenge. The TransRec systems developed by Framo are claimed to be the longest-established oil skimmer system on the market. The products of the Framo Group cover a wide range of pumps that are purpose designed for shipping, aquaculture and the offshore industry and the company is part of the the Alfa Laval Group. Framo has also combined with Maritime Partner, Norbit Aptomar and NorLense to create an oil spill recovery vessel group to provide oil spill response solutions.

Seabed cleaning using robots and AI The latest research project being undertaken by the Germen research centre Fraunhofer CML is a project that aims at cleaning the ocean seabed using a combination of robots and artificial intelligence. It is estimated that the oceans contain between 26 and 66 million tons of waste with approximately 94% of this total located on the seabed. So far, collection efforts have focused mostly on surface waste, with only a few local efforts to gather underwater waste, always involving human divers. Now a team of researchers in a consortium of eight European partners from Germany, the Netherlands, Croatia, France, and
