OUTLOOK POSITIVE FOR SEAWORK 2021 Diverse Marine (VB03, VB20, VB21) Isle of Wight, UK launched the BARTech30, Seacat ‘Columbia’ on Sunday 12 June at their Isle of Wight shipyard. This vessel was designed by renowned naval architects, BAR Technologies in partnership with design pioneers, Chartwell Marine Ltd. The BARTech30 has BAR Technologies own FOSS (foil optimised stability system) incorporated, ensuring vastly enhanced seakeeping in addition to ground-breaking fuel efficiency, with emissions 30% lower than conventional CTV designs.. The scheduled final build procedures have been interrupted so that the vessel can be officially launched at Seawork as it was decided that it was so important to show the industry this boat. Once launched, both Seacat ‘Columbia’ and Seacat ‘Cambria’ are set to work alongside Seacat’s existing Offshore Energy Support Vessels. The construction of this vessel involved many suppliers, who are also regular Seawork exhibitors including: SeaCat Services, Diverse Marine; High Speed Transfers Ltd; Aluminium Marine Consultants Ltd.

DEBUT/LAUNCH NEWS

ARTEMIS EF-11 WORKBOAT Artemis Technologies (F52), the global leader in green maritime innovation, has launched to market the world’s first commercially viable 100% electric, high-speed foiling workboat range. Developed and built in Belfast, the zeroemission vessels are thåe greenest workboats on the planet and represent a £12 million investment in research and development. With a top speed of 34 knots and a range of 60 nautical miles at 25 knots cruise speed, the vessels produce incredible energy savings of up to 90% compared to conventional fossil fuel workboats. Powered by the revolutionary Artemis eFoiler ® propulsion system, the workboats fly silently above the water, ensuring an exceptionally comfortable gliding experience no matter the sea conditions and creating minimal wake, making them an ideal solution for traditionally busy waterways. Aimed specifically at the global workboat and crew transfer market, Artemis Technologies’ electric foiling workboat range ensures robustness and reliability that has been developed and tested on the world’s most advanced marine digital twin simulator located in Belfast.

The company, which currently employs 60 people, is developing a range of green transport solutions which it anticipates will create 1,000 jobs over the next decade. Artemis Technologies is a spin-off from the Artemis Racing team that competed in the America’s Cup of which its founder, two-time Olympic champion Dr Iain Percy OBE is a fourtime veteran.

ELECTRIC COLLABORATION - RS BOATS AND CHEETAH MARINE JOIN FORCES British powerhouses RS Electric Boats (VA41) and Cheetah Marine International (VA40) are joining forces to develop a new generation of electric workboats. The companies, both based on the UK’s south coast (RS Electric Boats at Hamble Point, and Cheetah Marine at Ventnor, Isle of Wight), will be working together to accelerate the evolution of dependable electric boats for commercial, and leisure use. The exciting development starts with commercial applications. Initially electric workboats will be developed and delivered under a combination of the RS Electric Boats and Cheetah brands, with electric catamaran adventure boats to follow. The collaboration officially launches in June 2022 and both companies will be exhibiting sideby-side at Seawork. Together they aim to produce electric workboat catamarans suitable for a wide range of applications.

OFFSHORE CONTRACT HOOKED

Leading Norwegian geosciences company PGS has just taken delivery of 20 advanced tow hooks from Henriksen AS (D11) for use by its fleet of geo-seismic survey support vessels. The PGS workboats may be launched from any of the company’s six survey ships and are used to deploy and service seismic streamers being towed, deployed anywhere from Brazil and the North Sea to Norway and the Asia Pacific regions. The hooks are now playing an important part in enabling the boats to recover, tow and release the streamers while minimising risks to their crews.

The hooks have been designed by Henriksen AS to introduce a level of towing safety that is usually only available for much larger towing vessels such as tugs and offshore support vessels. The Henriksen towing hook is important because it features a quick release facility that can be activated by any crew member working on deck or in the wheelhouse. If a dangerous situation develops unexpectedly, a manual cable can be used to release the tow immediately, even while it is still under load.

A new USV design that focuses on hydrography and environmental data collection will be revealed at Seawork by SEA-KIT International (F115), a leading provider of low-carbon USV (uncrewed surface vessel) solutions in active operation across the globe. The SEA-KIT H-class USV, with its retractable gondola and dual sensor deployment options, is a highly configurable design based on a wealth of operational data and feedback collected from the company’s established X-class USVs. Several of these 12m vessels are currently operational in the Indian Ocean, North Sea, Red Sea and the Pacific. Featuring a composite hull for higher transit speeds, giving it greater range and endurance as well as active stabilisers to minimise roll, the new design has 12m and 15m variants, with the 12m version transportable in a standard shipping container for rapid, low-cost deployment. Both variants can be davit launched. SEA-KIT’s H-class USV is designed to MCA Category 0 for extended, over-the-horizon capability and will hold Unmanned Marine Systems (UMS) certification from Lloyd’s Register as well as Lloyd’s Register approval for design and hull construction.

MHO-CO HYBRID VESSEL ‘ASGARD’ UNVEILED AT SEAWORK MHO-Co’s new crew transfer vessel (CTV) (VB22) will be demonstrating the novel technology onboard, diesel-electric operation, low fuel consumption Dynamic Positioning System-mode and new Human Machine Interface (HMI). Two leaders in marine electrification, Volvo Penta (B9), and Danfoss’ Editron division, have worked together to power two of the UK’s first fully integrated hybrid electric crew transfer vessels (CTVs). The new hybrid vessels have been in operation at an offshore wind farm for a month and are already making a positive environmental impact; delivering an impressive 20% emission savings and flexible transport. MHO Asgard and MHO Apollo have ferried over 50 workers and numerous supplies to the Hornsea Two offshore wind farm, which is located approximately 89km (55.3 miles) off the Yorkshire coast. A recent announcement from COP26 was the promise of £160 million in new funding to support the building of floating offshore wind farms in Scotland and Wales. Although this is a significant win in the UK

Maritime Training & Careers Day on Thursday 23 June, the third day of Seawork, is aimed at students aged 16-19 years. The multiplicity of opportunities available in the Commercial Marine world will be a surprise to some and a magnet for those looking for deeply absorbing and rewarding roles (or even a change of career direction). This attractive, multifaceted sector is looking to attract trainees and graduates. Seawork exhibitors will show the huge scope of roles in the industry both on-thewater and shore-based, the opportunities and schemes and assistance available for those with or without qualifications. Philip Hoar, Maritime Apprenticeship and Development Coordinator at UKSA, will present UKSA’s apprenticeship schemes including the UKSA Level 3 Workboat Crew Member Apprenticeship and Level 2 Port Operative programme designed to give the apprentice all the skills, knowledge and behaviours to work on a wide variety of specialist vessels. Anyone aged 18 or over can apply, and there is no upper age limit. Based at Solent LEP in Portsmouth, Lorna Wagner, Programme Manager (Careers and Outreach), leads the careers activity at Maritime UK, working with employers and educators to promote the many exciting opportunities in the sector. She will speak
