As governments around the world start to approve the use of COVID vaccines, this signals the start of the end of the pandemic. At least we can look forward with certainty to better times and return to some normality in 2021. And 2020 has certainly been a very difficult year with COVID-19 dominating just about every activity and having a significant effect on us all, both personally and in business. With just a few working days left until the Christmas break and the end of 2020, our thoughts turn to the plans for dealing with Q1 2021 and then beyond. We are fortunate to the extent that the underlying activity of the commercial marine business remains good. While activity has been affected by the downturn, they are not completely dependent on the state of the economic cycle, there are ports and coastline to maintain, ongoing security and safety, and windfarms to service. In fact, some sectors of the commercial marine business can look forward to a boost from the increased infrastructure spending as governments start to reflate their economies. With respite on the horizon, we can already start to see businesses emerging from ‘Lockdown’ mode and start to

consider growth and advantage. It is an easier time to swing market share than the top of the cycle, for the more nimble and brave. The team have missed not producing Seawork this year. After 22 editions there are many regulars and friends amongst exhibitors, sponsors, speakers and visitors that makes it such an enjoyable time. Nearly a year of screen meetings of one sort or another, if nothing else has shown us the value of live interaction with other people. There is nothing like the anticipation and excitement of a live event. Exhibitions generate an energy when a like-minded group of people get together to talk about business. We can demonstrate a piece of equipment or the service provision we have on offer. We can ask questions to find out what our clients really need and pick up on the nuance of nonverbal cues. It is really only by meeting and talking to people can we demonstrate the value and character of our businesses. We can learn the unexpected. Let’s look forward to meeting up at Seawork & M&CCE in June 2021. Best wishes and happy Christmas, Andrew Webster Chief Executive, Mercator Media Limited
