25 YEARS OF SEAWORK! Celebrating its 25th anniversary edition in 2024, Seawork has gone from strength to strength since its creation in 1998.

The first edition of Seawork, the leading commercial marine and workboat exhibition, was held in Southampton in 1998.

The Port of Southampton has hosted the event ever since the first edition at the QE11 Cruise Terminal, then at the Canary Islands Fruit Terminal in the Western Docks. In 2016, a move to Mayflower Park provided the ground space to create covered hall space for exhibitors, as well as a larger area on the quayside and room for additional pontoon areas for vessels and on water displays.

“The inaugural Seawork was a great success in 1998, where we attracted over 1,000 attendees.

Back then there was so little opportunity for the European commercial marine market to come together under one roof and conduct business. We knew from speaking with different companies that everyone was experiencing the same frustrations therefore we built the platform to bring the industry together. Berthon welcomes new apprentices Berthon, a multi-discipline marine business providing products and services to the defence, commercial and private marine sectors worldwide, has welcomed its latest cohort of apprentices.

Embarking on their careers at Berthon are Marley Evans (shipwright), Tom Wischhusen (engineer), Max Barrow (shipwright), Ben Simmons (engineer), James Bentley (electrician), William Crane (engineer) and Oliver Drummond (engineer).

Berthon exhibited their vessels at Speed@Seawork, Seawork and took part in the Careers Fair as part of the Careers & Training Day at the event.

Landmark first all-electric tug in Europe Six new Damen RSD Tugs including Europe’s first all-electric tug have been ordered by the Port of Antwerp-Bruges as part of the ongoing renewal of its fleet.

One of the world’s busiest ports, the high-pressure environment of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges will be a thorough test of the new RSD-E Tug 2513, following the lead of the Port of Auckland and others in supporting the development of low and zero emission propulsion systems.

“This is a landmark in the adoption of all-electric tugs as mainstream harbour towage solutions,” says Vincent Maes,” Damen Area Sales Manager Benelux.

“Port of Antwerp-Bruges’s support of our advanced tug solutions plays an important role in introducing them to the wider market and it is, as always, a pleasure to work with a client who shares Damen’s vision of a sustainable future.”

Pod partnership Rolls-Royce Power Systems and ZF have expanded their long-standing partnership in marine propulsion systems to include pod propulsion packages. The integrated solution improves manoeuvrability and propulsion efficiency. Available up to 1,250 kilowatts (1,700 hp), and later also up to 1,470 kW (2,000 hp), the power range is based on mtu Series 2000 engines and ZF’s POD 4600.

New solutions to support emissionsreduction New solutions to support emissionsreduction goals for future vessel designs are on their way thanks to the signing of a Memorandum Of Understanding between Caterpillar Marine and Strategic Marine.

Collaboration signifies valuable milestone Designed and built to service Turkish Petroleum’s requirement for the transfer of offshore personnel and logistic support, the ARES 65 Fast Crew Transfer Vessel (FCTV) is the result of a successful collaboration between global design house BMT and Turkish Shipyard ARES. TIME TO SHINE

The planning stages of Series 4 of the TV series ‘Deep Water Salvage’ are well underway and now is your chance to get involved.

Shown on the US Weather Channel and the History Channel, such was the success of the ten episode Series 3 that David Gilbert of Renowned Films was immediately re-commissioned to produce an extended 16 episode follow-on.

‘Deep Water Salvage’ looks at the world of underwater salvage companies, sunken vessels, marine repairs and recovery,

divers and their work.

Keen to meet relevant companies and learn about their projects, David says, ‘Despite the name, work in anything deeper than your average paddling pool can be of interest.

The series celebrates the work of salvors and divers and the tough work they do in difficult circumstances – all told through the eyes of the divers themselves.’

You will find David and Renowned Films at Seawork 2024 in the new Underwater Intervention Pavilion.

WELLINGTON REGENERATES Work is underway in Dover UK on the re-configuration of the current marina in the Wellington Dock and its replacement with a modern facility, as part of a wider regeneration programme.

Walcon has been contracted by the Port of Dover to undertake the project, which includes the demolition, disposal and recycling of the existing marina followed by building and installation of a new 135-berth facility.

Walcon will be manufacturing and installing the new walkways and piers using System 2000 pontoons, which will be fitted with GRP open mesh decking, and three new access bridges plus bridgeheads will also be constructed and installed.

Walcon’s Road Transportable Rig has been on-site since July providing the necessary lifting capability. The new pontoons will be delivered by the end of the year and the final piles will in by the end of February. The marina is due to be fully operational in April, with the new marina capable of taking boats up to 16 metres in length.

With Dover’s long history, English Heritage is involved and challenges include the possibility of encountering obstacles such as unexploded ordnance on the seabed. When Wellington Dock is completed, it will complement the Outer Marina providing a mix of tidal and non-tidal berths. All this is set against the backdrop of the iconic White Cliffs and the historic Dover Castle.

SEAWORK MEETING LEADS TO CONTRACT Thanks to a meeting at Seawork, Norcom Technology Limited has been awarded a contract from King’s Lynn Conservancy Board to supply SeaTrak, a Windows based AIS Monitoring Package.

We got the order because Paul Bailey the deputy harbour master visited our stand at the show and contacted us shortly afterwards,” said Phil Harris, Managing Director, Norcom Technology.

Racing into 2024 – Speed@Seawork

Speed@Seawork 2024, the sectorspecific feature of Seawork, Europe’s leading commercial marine exhibition, is to be hosted by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) in Cowes, UK on Monday 10 June 2024.

Offering knowledge sharing, networking, exhibiting, sponsorship and demonstration opportunities, Speed@Seawork focusses on the fast vessels, and associated

equipment, that operate at high speed in the field of security intervention and Search And Rescue.

2023 saw an international field of delegates from the defence and specialist sectors take the opportunity to participate in sea-trials, enjoy fast manoeuvre and equipment demonstrations, and keynote presentations from Procurement and MOD personnel.

Sustainability top of the agenda for commercial marine industry Seawork is fully committed to delivering a sustainable exhibition for its visitors and exhibitors. Seawork continues to work with partners and contractors in 2024 to further reduce its carbon footprint and to help the drive towards cleaner, healthier oceans.

The event organisers are fully committed to ensuring that the exhibition is managed and held to the highest standard of sustainability, as well as supporting Big Blue Ocean Cleanup* as the event’s environmental partner they ‘Sparky’- Damen’s first all-electric harbour tug have taken the following steps:

Seawork Careers & Training Day addresses the maritime skills shortage Following a successful event at this year’s exhibition, Seawork will be working with Maritime UK Solent once again, to encourage students to experience all that the Commercial Marine industry has to offer.

The dedicated Careers Fair at Seawork 2023, organised in partnership with Maritime UK and the Solent LEP, brought young people aged between 14 and 19 to see first-hand what a job in the commercial marine industry could look like and to gain some valuable insight on the opportunities available.

Over 160 students from a mix of secondary schools and further education colleges from South Essex to the New Forest attended two dedicated Careers events, taking place in Seawork’s Conference Rooms.

Taking place in the morning of Thursday 13 June, Seawork will run a Careers Fair enabling Students to engage with Seawork exhibitors in a dedicated Careers Fair environment.

Running alongside this will be a series of ‘Commercial Marine has Talent’ sessions showcasing graduates and apprentices across the maritime sector who will share their experiences.

Louise Bateman, Progression Mentor, St Vincent College, Gosport declared, “Great day out – amazing, inspirational talks from students with successful apprenticeship’s. The Lego stand was a big hit! One student that attended is now seeking careers support to look at marine engineering apprenticeships.”

BMEEA Apprentices competition returns in 2024 Twenty-four marine business Level 3 apprentices in 12 teams, from Sunseeker, the RNLI, and Cobra Ribs, took part in the BMEEA (British Marine Electrical and Electronics Association) Apprentices Competition, held as a part of Seawork’s Training and Careers Day in 2023.

Apprentices competed in real time to design the controls for a motor, including necessary calculations and diagrams, and wire up a system using the test rigs provided. Clear marking, neatness, adherence to their wiring diagram and, of course, the fact that it worked were all important factors when it came to the judging, expertly carried out by Ian Lewis of Weidmuller and Dan Cox of Energy Solutions.
