Get Set for Series 2 of Workboat 2050 Following the success of the inaugural series, Get Set for Workboat 2050 returns for a second series. Session 1 of the new series will take place at Seawork Connect on Tuesday 5 October 2021 at 10:30 -11:30 BST. Peter Collinson Designed to provide autonomous solutions to improve working efficiency on the water, FITZROY can be used for hydrology research, scientific exploration, hydrographic survey, emergency Search And Rescue and other tasks. It uses GPS location tracking to follow pre-set waypoints and mission parameters, navigating autonomously while intelligently avoiding obstacles up to 50m ahead. The vessel communicates with the remote base station via WIFI, 4G and VHF radio.

Big power in a small package

Cummins new 4.5-litre diesel engine boasts big power in a small package with low vibration, complying with EU Stage V, U.S. EPA Tier 3 emissions and regulations without the use of aftertreatment.

The in-line 4-cylinder, 16 valve, 4-stroke marine engine is easy to adapt to not only fit new builds but can easily replace outdated propulsion systems with a quieter, more environmentally friendly option.

Famous Face Gets a Lesson on Surveying

The range of Cygnus gauges is extensive.

Boatyards can always turn up a few surprises but a national treasure is unusual. Marine surveyor John Heath, who has over 40 years’ experience and is also the current Technical Director for the IIMS, was conducting a purchase survey on an ex-passenger vessel on the River Thames.

As he was taking measurements with his Cygnus 4+ thickness gauge, in order to calculate loss of plate, a very famous face approached him; none other than Sir Tony Robinson, a British ‘national treasure’ who is a prolific creator of factual and historical documentaries about the UK, (but is perhaps most famous for playing Blackadder’s sidekick – Baldrick!)

Sir Tony was filming a series for Channel 5 called “The Thames: Britain’s Greatest River” and he and his team were in in the same boatyard where John and his team were working. Delivering the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition – hear how it was done The Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC ), funded by the UK Department for Transport, is part of the 10 Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution supporting the Clean Maritime Plan and the transition to Net Zero by 2050.

Neale Ryan, Senior Programme Manager at Innovate UK, led Innovate UK’s delivery of the flagship Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC); the £23m programme supports the design and development of technologies for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by the UK’s maritime sector.

A total of 55 projects were awarded funding across 2 strands of the competition; 208 organisations were involved including SeaworkConnect exhibitors Teignbridge Propellers, BAE Systems, Wight Shipyard, MJR Controls and Barrus.

Pioneer classified Bureau Veritas (BV), a world leader in testing, inspection, and certification (TIC), has classified the world’s first hybrid-powered Surface Effect Ship (SES), the CWind Pioneer, which features an air cushion, twin hulls and an innovative diesel and electric drivetrain with considerable battery storage onboard.

CWind is a leading provider of project services, crew transfer vessels (CTVs), and training for the offshore wind industry. With a capacity of 24 passengers, the CWind Pioneer is a direct response to the needs of the offshore wind industry for innovative technologies that reduce CO2 emissions and provide cost-effective services to windfarms located further offshore.

The first of its kind with a hybrid diesel and battery electric power system, the CWind Pioneer can operate purely on battery power alongside or at slow speeds, such as when transiting restricted waterways or on standby in the windfarm, helping reduce fuel consumption, reduce [diesel] engine running hours and lower CO2 emissions. Conversely, top speed exceeds 43 kts.

The air cushion motion control system provides significant advantages, with smoother and more comfortable conditions on-board and increased operational days offshore. Personnel are transferred safely and comfortably even in extreme weather conditions with significant wave heights up to 2m, permitting greater operational windows.

The CWind Pioneer is being used at the Borssele 1 and 2 offshore wind farms in the Netherlands.

Alamarin-Jet Oy are a world leading manufacturer of water jet propulsion systems.

Specialising in vessels from 4m up to 30m, Alamarin-Jet are pushing the limits of waterjet design and efficiency, offering the very latest and advanced products available to date.

Going global oneTANK, a subsidiary of naval architecture and marine engineering firm Glosten, has been acquired by global ballast water equipment manufacturer ERMA FIRST which will now bring the world’s smallest and easiest to install ballast water treatment system to the international market.

OneTANK developed a small scale innovative, low-cost, IMO Revised G8 Code and United States Coast Guard compliant system. Based on a patented mixing technology developed by the U.S. Geological Survey, the system can be installed in larger vessels’ aftpeak tanks. It is also suitable for use aboard workboats, tugboats, semisubmersibles, fishing vessels and superyachts.

Suzuki collects Micro-Plastic Suzuki has developed a world first innovation within their outboards - a device that collects micro-plastic waste whilst operating the outboard. It collects micro-plastic waste from seawater pumped through the engine as part of its cooling system.

The device can be easily installed and does not affect the engine performance since it only utilizes the returning water that has already been used to cool the engine.
