UK fishing company Waterdance has taken delivery of the first new netter to be built for a UK company for many years. The 20.40 metre LOA, 7.70 metre breadth Amanda of Ladram has been built at Parkol Marine Engineering for Waterdance and will fish from Newlyn, landing primarily hake, but also fishing for monkfish, turbot and other target species. An addition to the company’s fleet, Amanda of Ladram is the third newbuild for Waterdance in recent years, following the deliveries of potting vessel Nichola of Ladram and beam trawler Georgina of Ladram last year, underscoring the company’s

confidence in the future of fishing in the South-West of England. Amanda of Ladram was delivered on time, despite the challenges presented by the Covid pandemic, and arrived in Newlyn just in time to take gear on board and catch the last few days of the neap tides to complete its first trip before an exceptionally large spring tide kept the new netter tied up for a few days. 8 We’ll take a closer look at Amanda of Ladram in the June issue of WF&A.

COURT UPHOLDS PULSE BAN Any expectation that an outright ban on pulse fishing could be avoided has been ended as the Court of Justice of the European Union unequivocally rejected a request by the Netherlands for the ban to be reviewed. There had been 84 Dutch fishing vessels using this method of fishing, and the fleet had come to rely heavily on pulse fishing. There is now no question over whether or not the method will be prohibited, as the fleet is now in the last stage of phasing out pulse gear. “Proven environmental benefits do not appear to be sufficient to allow a new fishing technique. This ruling increases the risk of investing in innovation, while innovation is crucial to be able to meet the European ambitions in the field of environmental conservation and more selective fishing,” stated Dutch industry bodies Visned and de Nederlandse Vissersbond as the court’s decision was announced. “Unfortunately, the scientific facts did not give sufficient reason for the court to reverse the decisionmaking on legal grounds.”

Outside the Netherlands, the decision has been welcomed, notably by fishermen in the Hauts de France region. “This is excellent news,” said Olivier Lepretre President of the CRPMEM Hauts-de-France. “French fishermen find it difficult to understand that we can defend practices that endanger artisanal fishing and the sustainability of the fishery resource.” 8 Continued on page 9
