Classics in Japan
n the final days before the opening of the classic-car area in Shinagawa with adjoining workshop and service centre, Toshido Suda, President of the largest Mercedes-Benz branch in Japan, has his hands full. In addition to looking after the normal business, he pays regular visits to the new outpost. The still young branch with its lounge and restaurant area in a trendy new district of the city is unrivalled in the whole of Japan. Not as big, nor as opulent as Suda’s dealership in the heart of Tokyo, the new branch, just a few miles from Disneyland Tokyo, is quite different. Here, the atmosphere is cosy; people meet, read and simply relax in front of the open fireplace. In early November, the new workshop with adjoining ALL TIME STARS area opened for business, just a few hundred metres away from the outpost in Shinagawa. The new building is much more than just a stateof-the-art workshop with seven lifting platforms and its own car wash on the first floor. On entering the building, one is struck by photos of classic
Mercedes-Benz racing cars and the legendary Mercedes Simplex on the walls. In the showroom, visitors are greeted by a Mercedes 300 SE, 126 model series in elegant dark blue with colour code 904. Immediately next to it is an example of the 140 model series not often seen in Europe. In the early 1990s, the Mercedes 600 SEL AMG was the worldwide benchmark – there was nothing sportier or more luxurious. With 294,000 kilometres behind it, the black Mercedes-Benz S-Class looks as if it has just rolled off the production line. ‘In Japan, we’re seeing a growing demand for high-quality classic cars. Japanese customers are very discerning and want vehicles that are in pristine condition,’ explains Patrik Gottwick, responsible for ALL TIME STARS at Mercedes-Benz Classic. ‘That fits excellently with our philosophy and ambition. And there’s more. Standing in front of the entrance is a stylish grey W124 in tip-top condition. And resplendent behind the mighty glass front, set against the ALL TIME STARS scenic wall, is a facelifted Mercedes E 320 Estate in silver metallic with grey leather seats.

BLACK FOREST
SLEEP-OUT Mercedes stages a very special outdoor event “The sky is important. When you’re lying in bed, you’re looking up at it.” Gunther Holtorf knows what he’s talking about. In 1990 he built a bed into his car and spent the next 26 years on the road. Over 500,000 miles, through 177 countries. On his journeys Holtorf never spent a single night in a hotel. “We couldn’t leave Otto alone,” he explains, laughing. Otto is his Mercedes 300 GD, built in 1988, practically a member of the family, a Guinness world record holder and probably the most famous off-roader in the world. When Mercedes invited him to the Sleep Out, he was happy to accept. A dozen or so car fans met up for this very special trip into the heart of nature, and a night in a vehicle in the great outdoors. It also marked Otto’s final trip before heading to the Museum. Also present: three bloggers and three colleagues from the press. Journalist Ulrich Dolde even brought along his own off-roader: a Mercedes 914 all-wheel-drive truck, which he had single-handedly converted into a camper van. Vehicles are provided to the other journalists – there are three Unimogs, an Actros, a Zetros, a Marco Polo and a G-Class to choose from, each model a specialist in its own right and ideally suited for the great outdoors. The meeting point is the gravel pit at Ötigheim, site of the Mercedes all-
wheel-drive test ground. There is a lot of man-made nature and plenty of mud. Steep slopes, excavated watercourses, scree and potholes simulate almost every area of application. Some of the artificial hills have gradients of up to 110 %, which is equivalent to an angle of just under 50 degrees. Then the expedition heads into the Black Forest proper. The convoy works its way along the Kinzig valley, heading upwards – and at 280 metres they are in the middle of nowhere. Finally the group finds a spot to camp: on a grassy elevation with a magnificent view. The vehicles form a corral, a camp fire is started and the barbecue gets underway. And, of course, there are stories to tell from around the world: Gunther Holtorf has plenty – at least one from every place on earth. The others chip in with their experiences, too. Apoorva Prasad, founder of India’s Outdoor Journal, tells stories of climbing in the Himalayas. The muchtravelled Katrin Lehrwho writes a travel blog gets a few tips for her next trips through South America and Africa. There are plenty of things to bear in mind when you’re travelling alone in these areas. When Holtorf tells how patiently he waited for his entry visas to North Korea and Cuba to come through, the group have even more respect for him: After all, Otto was the first car with a foreign licence plate to go to either place.

AMERICAN CHAMP
Racing driver Paul O’Shea won his second title as US sports car champion in the 1956 season driving a Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing. He went on to defend his title again the following year, this time driving a 300 SLS, the racing version of the 300 SL Roadster.
M
ercedes backed O’Shea in the US sports car races to promote sales of the company’s sports cars in the important export market. This reflected the maxim that a brand instantly benefits from racing victories by selling production cars (“win on Sunday – sell on Monday“). Accordingly, the representatives of the company closely monitored what cars the race spectators arrived in: At the Cumberland National Sports Car Race they counted around 100 Mercedes passenger cars in the car park, mostly sports cars. Even more impressive was the result of the parking lot analysis of the 12 Hours of Sebring Race: Among the approximately 15,000 spectator cars were an estimated three hundred 300 SLs, plus many hundred 190 SLs. The correlation between involvement in motorsport and vehicle sales also was a topic in a board meeting: ‘Under the favourable influence of the races’, according to the minutes, ‘sales of our 190 SL model increased from 824 in 1955 to 1691 in 1956’. This represents a doubling in sales in one year. Racing manager Alfred Neubauer was busy arranging the cars for the following season. There was a 300 SL with ivory paintwork and red leather, and a second 300 SL painted silver grey with blue leather. Mercedes decided against vehicles with aluminium bodywork as the company wanted the works racing cars to remain on a technical par with the customer sports cars. The two 300 SLs were ready right on time for the important ‘National Races’ on the racing calendar of the SCCA. The season comes to life in the reports to the parent company in Stuttgart. About the Cumberland National Sports Car Race on 20 May 1956, which ended in a one-two-three
class victory for the 300 SLs led by Paul O’Shea, O’Shea was particularly praised by many other drivers for his excellent driving technique. He took the lead in last quarter of the 45-minute airport race, followed by his team-mate Dick Dungan, and Charles Wallace. ‘As a result, the entire race – especially the first 40 minutes – was led by three Mercedes 300 SLs, ahead of a Corvette’. It was the first victory of the season for O’Shea. Prior to one race, extensive trials were conducted with the 300 SL on a racetrack hired specifically for the purpose of testing a modified air vent with O’Shea, running both clockwise as well as counter-clockwise. That such an effort pays off was apparent in the Giant’s Despair Hill Climb in Laurel Run, Pennsylvania in which O’Shea finished with the class victory: ‘We were able to set the best time here in the D Production racing class, and were even three seconds faster than the next higher class, in which a Corvette held the lead’, the report stated. The Chevrolet sports car developed into a formidable opponent for the 300 SLs that season. This was also demonstrated in the Breakneck Hill Climb Race in August: ‘During the practice day, the times of our Mercedes 300 SL and the Corvette were clearly quite close. There is no need for me to say anything more about all the other vehicles, because they were pretty far behind our recorded times’, the summary reads. The race ended with a one-two-three class victory of the 300 SLs with O’Shea in the lead. In all, O’Shea competed in 14 races in 1956. In October, the racing driver clearly led the standings for the informal title of National Sports Car Champion. Despite winning the last race of the season in Palm Springs, California, in November, Carroll Shelby was unable to wrestle this position away from him.
With that, Paul O’Shea confirmed the high regard Mercedes had for him for the second year running. An internal report stated: ‘Paul O’Shea is fully on our side and has complete control of his vehicle. Also very important is the fact that he uses his head when he drives and observes all signals we give him during the race. It must also be said that he pushes our 300 SL to the utter limit if needed.’
THE OLDEST SL
The original SL was shown to a stunned press on 12 March 1952 on a motorway between Stuttgart and Heilbronn. The first 300 SL no longer exists; it was property of the factory and was eventually scrapped. However, the second car built, with chassis number 194 010 00002/52 still exists and has remained in the property of the firm ever since it was built. It was painstakingly restored for the 60th anniversary of the SL.
T
o do this, the Mercedes Classic Centre in Fellbach dismantled the vehicle and examined every part, before setting about the task of renovation. The work was based on one clear principle: to preserve substance and patina, whilst regaining the look and feel of a vehicle from the early Fifties. Thus, the second 300 SL ever built shines again in renewed splendour, while still displaying traces of its long and exciting life with pride. The roots of the SL lie in motor racing: in the early 1950s, Mercedes developed the 300 SL, W194 series racing car. It was a unique blend of three ingredients: lightweight construction, aerodynamics and reliability. Chassis number ‘2’ is one of two cars that share a special production history: numbers 1 and 2 were built by hand in Rudolf Uhlenhaut’s StuttgartUntertürkheim racing workshop. The following
eight vehicles, which were used mainly in the racing events of 1952, were manufactured in the Sindelfingen factory. In those days it was usual to build racing cars more or less as individual items, because each one was designed with its specific task in mind. And during a car’s assembly, too, the basic design was modified again and again in order to achieve the best results. This made a unique specimen of each W 194, the first two having an even stronger handcrafted one-of-a-kind aura. The special character of Number 2 is visible in many of its components, for instance the welding seams clearly show that they were hand-made, whilst the exhaust system, fuel tank, windscreen washer fluid reservoir and seat frames are all recognisably individually crafted. Its lightweight design was a great asset. This can be seen in its aluminium-magnesium sheet
metal body, which in this vehicle is very thin. It is also evident in the various components that are made lighter by means of perforations, for example the front axle, and even the handbrake lever. Every gram is skimped on, and that’s why such an expensive material as magnesium is used, for instance, on the transmission bell, and steering gear housings. Components made from aluminium include the fuel tank, washer fluid reservoir and main brake cylinder. All this effort is worthwhile: the ready-to-drive W 194 had an unladen weight of just 1060 kilograms. Restoration of the original bodywork was complex and demanding. Made from thin aluminium-magnesium sheet metal, it was by its very nature delicate. In addition, time has left its marks on it in many places, including evidence of earlier partial restoration. In some places the bodywork was very deformed.
The oldest SL » 21

The engine was derived from the power plant of the Mercedes 300 W186 luxury saloon. For this reason, the engine block of this SL has the number ‘186’ embossed on it, while the modified cylinder head, on the other hand, bears the number ‘194’: for its use as a racing car, the engineers boosted the engine’s output to around 170 bhp (125 kW), employing among other things three Solex sports carburettors and a sports camshaft. The sports engine was equipped with dry-sump lubrication and installed in a position canted 50 degrees towards the left so as to be able to fit under the flat bonnet. Number 2’s original engine was completely overhauled. On a modern-day test rig it was run for around 10 hours, confirming as it did, the original output specifications. The reconditioning of the two electric fuel pumps, for which today no replacement parts exist, was complex. However, the Classic Centre engineers were also able to recreate these true to the originals. The engine also shows individual character, for example the air filter housing is visibly made-to-measure by hand, and between the housing and the closed bonnet there is not even enough space for a person’s hand. The chassis was completed in the course
of several months. Each component was painstakingly cleaned and examined and, if necessary, reconditioned. The mechanics thus often advanced two steps, only to have to go back one – at times an arduous business. But one that in the end was successful, as the 1952 racing car was recreated piece by piece anew. One exceedingly fortunate circumstance was that the vehicle was virtually complete. The large Mercedes star on the radiator, for instance, can be seen to be handmade, as evidenced by the small irregularities it displays. It was polished and reattached, as was the original ‘300 SL’ lettering. The original rear license plate ‘W59-4029’ still exists, too, while the front number plate was faithfully reproduced. The wooden steering wheel, the gearshift knob, the instruments, the switches: all present and correct. The front axle was reconditioned. It was entirely nickel-plated, a method in use in those days to enable potentially safety-relevant hairline cracks to be easily detected on the racetrack. The rear axle showed, in particular through the state of its mechanical components that Number 2 had not been subjected to excessive strain, since all the gear wheels were in virtually new condition. The original Alfin brake drums were tested, trimmed
and reinstalled; the original riveted wheel rims were clad in Dunlop D8 tyres. The interior of the W194 breathes the air of those days. The seat covers, made from the characteristic blue tartan pattern, are new, while the roof lining and the rest of the cover fabric had been preserved in their entirety; they were cleaned and replaced, now gracing the vehicle again. And the aluminium seats under the fabric were also able to be used without excessive work having to be carried out on them. A special bravura piece was re-creating the car’s paintwork. The original nitro-lacquer was called ‘silver bronze’. Today it is no longer available and due to the environmental regulations in force, may no longer be used. Thus, the paint supplier of 1952 now undertook exhaustive research based on contemporary photographic and film material in order to recreate a paint colour as close as possible to the original, producing a precise formula for a water-based paint. With this matt silver paint the sports car now shines once again as it once did many years ago. Restoration work on the oldest SL in existence took a total of around nine months. But the effort was certainly worthwhile: the car is now radiant in all its erstwhile beauty.
Rendezvous with the delivery robot L
unch break at Daimler’s main plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim: Workers streaming from all directions make their way to the canteen in Building 128. Those who already had their fill enjoy the sun outdoors over a chat with colleagues. Or they relax on one of the modern seats in the forecourt. It is the usual lunchtime scene here, weather permitting. But today a stranger is moving through the crowd: 6D63 confidently mounts the kerb, politely lets a group of pedestrians pass and then rolls straight for the stairs on the side of the building. He has a rendezvous there, with Jasmin Hagg.
The marketing intern at Mercedes-Benz Vans is one of the test customers of 6D63, the delivery robot of Starship Technologies. Just a few minutes ago she was informed via smartphone that her order is about to be delivered. Walking down the stairs, Jasmin Hagg spots the six-wheeled vehicle with the cute proportions waiting exactly at the location her smartphone is showing her. She unlocks the vehicle’s cargo space using a smartphone app, removes the package and hurries back to her workplace. 6D63 meanwhile makes his own way back to the mother ship, a Sprinter designed to hold
a range of packages and up to eight delivery robots. What Mercedes-Benz Vans is trialling here on the company’s own premises as part of the ‘Robotic Delivery Systems’ project could soon become reality for parcel delivery services: At the beginning of the shift, a Sprinter drives to its target area. Having arrived at the location, the delivery man no longer delivers the parcels one by one. Instead, eight customers, who have previously agreed to a just-in-time delivery, receive simultaneous deliveries by the robots. This represents an enormous boost in terms of efficiency. In the meantime the delivery man
Rendezvous with the delivery robot Âť 23

handles the more difficult jobs involving unwieldy packages or prepares for his next stop. As part of the Robotic Delivery Systems project, transporters and delivery robots interact with each other intelligently at both the software and hardware level. On board the Sprinter, the lower deck is the reserved parking space for the robots. The upper deck accommodates the cargo hold for the parcels. What’s more, the Sprinter always knows where all his delivery robots are at any time. The robots themselves navigate using GPS and numerous cameras. The vehicle constantly checks its surroundings to ensure that its autonomous locomotion is safe. Starship Technologies has already successful tested its robots in the UK, in Switzerland and in Germany,
for example with the parcel delivery company Hermes and the electrical appliance retailer Saturn. The next step: Connecting the robots with a transporter as a mobile hub. Mercedes-Benz Vans and the Sprinter are the first to rise to this challenge. Interdisciplinary teams work on innovations, making use of the opportunities a networked and digitised world can offer. This way, the van becomes an integrated solution for the transportation of goods and people. That is also the kind of thinking that drives the two Starship founders. The Dane Janus Friis and the Estonian Ahti Heinla are popular in the start-up scene: They were involved in the development of the communications service Skype and the file sharing platform KaZaA. In 2014, the two went
on to establish Starship Technologies, aiming at nothing less than revolutionizing last-mile delivery. “I am certain that the use of robots will result in some significant changes, says Athi Heinla. “Ships will navigate in automatic mode, trucks will drive autonomously and delivery robots will become part of everyday life on our streets. It is not going to happen overnight, but more quickly than many people think. Soon Sprinter and robots will also deliver normal parcels containing shoes, clothes or books on public roads. The simultaneous delivery via robots out of the Sprinter – a system solution of Mercedes-Benz Vans that is going to make parcel delivery services sit up and take note.

INNOVATION FOCUS:
S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet

As members of the successful S-Class family, the Coupé and Cabriolet will soon benefit from the same extensive innovations that have been introduced on the saloon. These include extended driving assistance systems, the modern control and display concept with widescreen cockpit and a new generation of steering wheels, integrated comfort control and the latest infotainment generation. Exclusive to both of the two-door models and part of the standard equipment specification are innovative OLED tail lamps.
T
he further-developed models are designed for sportiness while showing off technical expertise. S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet feature front aprons with chrome-plated front splitter and voluminous air inlets. The dynamic looks are enhanced by restyled side skirts and chrome-plated twin tailpipe trims with a V12 look. The AMG Line also features new front and rear aprons. Especially striking at the front end are the large three-dimensional air inlets, which each include two chrome-plated fins. Innovative OLED tail lamps are a new feature of the models. With this technology (organic light emitting diode), wafer-thin layers of organic
materials are printed on a glass plate and made to illuminate. The total of 66 ultra-flat OLEDs act like floating elements inside the tail lamp; in addition, they emit a light pattern in all directions and form a unique day and night design. Locking and unlocking the vehicle is achieved by an animated light sequence with subsequent dimming-up of the tail lights. Of course, the OLED tail lamps also employ the usual Mercedes multi-level technology with different levels of intensity for brake lamps and turn signal indicators depending on the driving condition and ambient brightness (day/night). The interior features two new high-resolution
displays, each with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. Visually, the two displays under one shared glass cover blend into a widescreen cockpit and as a central element consequently emphasise the horizontal orientation of the interior design. Both models have Touch Control Buttons on the steering wheel. They respond to swiping motions like the screen of a smartphone. They enable the driver to control the functions of the instrument cluster and of the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. steering wheel is another new feature. ENERGIZING comfort control (optional extra) links various comfort systems in the vehicle together. It systematically uses the functions of the climate control system (including fragrancing) and the seats (heater, ventilation, massage), the panel heating as well as lighting and musical atmospheres, and enables a specific wellness set-up tailored to the mood and need of the customer. As a result, wellbeing and performance levels are enhanced. All S-Class models are equipped with the latest-generation infotainment system COMAND Online, starting a new era in digitisation and connectivity. Near Field Communication transforms the smartphone into a digital vehicle key. The coupé and cabriolet are taking a further large step towards autonomous driving and are moving to the next level with new or functionally considerably extended Intelligent Drive assistance systems. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist now provide even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of bends, junctions or roundabouts, for
example (country-specific variations may occur in terms of the individual functions). For this purpose, for example, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC makes considerably greater use of map and navigation data than hitherto. In 2014 in the S-Class Coupé, the optional MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension with curve tilting function was a world first in a standard-production car. The body tilts to the inside of the turn by up to 2.65 degrees and thereby reduces the transverse forces perceived by the passengers. This innovative system recognises bends with the help of a stereo camera behind the windscreen, and a lateral acceleration sensor of the ROAD SURFACE SCAN suspension. In the new coupé, this suspension control is further improved: the system’s new stereo camera has a much better performance and works at speeds up to 40mph. The S-Class Cabriolet is fitted as standard with the fullsupport AIRMATIC semi-active air suspension featuring infinitely variable damping control. The new V8-biturbo in the S 560 Coupé and S 560 Cabriolet is one of the world’s most economical V8 petrol engines and consumes up to eight percent less than its
predecessor. To lower the fuel consumption, four cylinders of the new V8 are deactivated simultaneously under partial load with the help of the CAMTRONIC valve-lift adjustment system (Coupé only). This reduces the pumping losses while improving the overall efficiency of the remaining four cylinders by shifting the operating point towards higher loads. The turbochargers positioned in the V of the cylinder banks represent another special feature. The new V8 has an output of 345 kW (469 PS) with a peak torque of 700 Nm. The coupé with V6 petrol engine and a rated output of 270 kW (367 PS) is now called the S 450. A new gliding function contributes to efficiency under real driving conditions. When the driving situation and charge level of the battery allow, the combustion engine is decoupled from the powertrain and runs at idle, so that the vehicle can coast freely. The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is another new feature of the S 450. The broad ratio spread of gears one to nine allows a clearly perceptible reduction in engine speed and is a decisive factor behind the high level of energy efficiency and ride comfort. The S 450 is equipped with a petrol particulate filter.
In 2014 in the S-Class Coupé, the optional MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension with curve tilting function was a world first in a standardproduction car. The body tilts to the inside of the turn by up to 2.65 degrees and thereby reduces the transverse forces perceived by the passengers.

tylish aesthete, robust off-roader or extrovert SUV – the new Limited Edition G-Class models exemplify how versatile the all-terrain icon still is just before the end of its period of manufacture. A special feature is the embossed emblem of a test scene “Schöckl proved since 1979” on the centre armrest. Comprehensively equipped both inside and outside, the special models are each limited to 463 units in line with the internal model series code. The exclusive special models are now available for ordering and will reach the showrooms in January 2018.
At 1,445 metres, the Schöckl is far from being the highest peak in the Alps. And yet the local mountain of Graz is both famous and infamous, especially among off-road fans: for many years, not far from where the G Class is produced, Mercedes has used an extremely challenging test track on the mountain. This is commemorated by the embossed Schöckl badge on the centre armrest of the G-Class Limited Edition – a special kind of Alpine accolade. The emblem is bordered by the lettering “Schöckl proved since 1979” and “Limited Edition 1 of 463”. Another feature shared by the three special models is the “Limited Edition” inscription as an emblem on the body on the A-pillar. The G 350 d Limited Edition is the aesthete among the brothers. Its paint finish is in designo mocha black metallic. A particular eye-catcher is the outer protective strip with an exclusive trim insert with a brushed aluminium look. The interior of the G 350 d Limited Edition indulges its passengers with upholstery in saddle brown designo nappa leather. The seats are in this single colour, while the dashboard and AMG Performance steering wheel feature a two-colour scheme in saddle brown/black. Matching this is contrasting topstitching in light brown. The G 350 d Professional Limited Edition is positioned as a robust offroader. The paint finish of this special model is in china blue. The external distinguishing features include a steel front bumper, protective grilles for the front turn signal lamps, front mud flaps and Professional Off-road package including roof rack.

Exclusive to the interior of this special model is the fabric covering of the centre sections of the seats in the classic diamond design of previous G-models. The standard specification includes heated seats for driver and front passenger, heated windscreen, Loading Protection package and auxiliary heater including remote control.
Limited edition: Special G-Class Âť 31
The role of the extrovert is embodied by the G 500 Limited Edition. Its paint finish in designo platinum magno contrasts with black add-on parts such as the trim insert in the outer protective strip. Painted in magno black are three louvres of the radiator grille and the spare wheel cover.
The special interior features include upholstery in black designo nappa leather with white topstitching, AMG Performance steering wheel in black Dinamica microfibre/nappa leather, black designo piano lacquer trim, Chrome package, Exclusive package and leather-covered grab handle on the roof liner.

The road from dreary
MONOCHROME P
sychologists, neurobiologists, and advertising consultants are constantly developing studies of personal colour preferences in order to delve into the customer’s psyche. Black, for example, represents power, while owners of white cars are said to be conscientious; red is dynamic, and yellow is sporty. Colour designers are fighting an ongoing battle to change car buyers’ preferences. We don’t see much colour on the roads, roughly 55 percent of all new cars are bought in 2016 were grey and black. Such a lack of colour would have been unthinkable in the 1970s and 1980s, when popular colours included yellow, orange, red, and even with stripes and prints. People wanted to get away from the conservative post-war colours. They wanted to stand out. They might not make much of an impact in the statistics, but sports cars have always been more colourful and creatively finished. Colours tend to be rather exotic: more than one colour, bright orange or shimmering colours – anything goes. The goal is simple: to stand out at any price. Audi, for example, has expanded its colour chart for the R8 to allow buyers to individualize the body. This finishing process usually begins with a bath: The so-called cathodic dip painting primes the bodywork. This is followed by a filler paint to protect against stone chipping and UV rays, after which the base coat of pigments and effect materials is applied to give colour. A transparent lacquer is then applied as the top protective coat, which is just 0.1 to 0.2 mm thick. Audi has developed a special powder that is blasted onto the surface and roughens the clear lacquer to a depth of just a few thousandths of a mm.
Light hitting the surface is then reflected by the individualized surface areas. Paint looks its best when it has been polished to perfection. Daily wear and tear, however, presents a major challenge, with dirty roads and weather conditions diminishing the shine. Help is on its way. UltraTech International sent a Nissan Note, coated with “Ultra-Ever-Dry” nanopaint onto a mogul slope riddled with deep potholes and mud holes. The special nano structure creates a protective layer of air between the paint and the environment, effectively repelling mud, rain, and other dirt from the surface. This means the cars doesn’t have to go into the car wash very often, which would only dull the shine of the paint long-term anyway. Trends come and go. But while changing your wardrobe or redecorating your apartment is easy, changing the colour of your car is not. If you do want to make a change, however, you don’t have to opt for expensive repainting. “Car wrapping” is a rapidly growing industry. Traditionally used to wrap taxies and police cars, wrapping has become increasingly popular among end customers. But getting back to painting: Graffiti artist René Turrek has developed a special kind of paint that can change colour over and over again. Applied using only spray cans and markers, the paint magically changes colour or can even reveal a hidden design or image when it comes into contact with water. The trick also works when the paint is subjected to a change in temperature. Turrek got the idea from the legendary Matchbox cars that change colour under running water. But what if you could change the colour of the paint simply by pressing a button? If you think of a Ferrari, you’d probably picture a red one. The colour goes back to an old FIA rule that meant
each country had to paint its Grand Prix racing cars a certain colour. The colour originally allocated to Germany was actually white, before it became silver – which gave rise to the name Silver Arrows. Advanced nanotechnology could easily put an end to this tradition: serious black for business one day; red the next, or even bright yellow for the weekend. Electrical impulses enable colour pigments to restructure themselves over and over. This changing light refraction makes it possible to transform the colour of the paint in a matter of seconds. What about driving at night? No one can see the beautiful paintwork. Nissan has developed a solution, in which UV rays are absorbed during the day to give the paint a fluorescent finish for up to ten hours during the night. The Japanese carmaker benefits from the know-how gathered by start-up by the creators of the “Starpath” concept of glowin-the-dark paths. The process is the same as in fluorescent lamps – but with one key difference: no electricity is needed. Soon paint will even be able to generate its own power. It is quite possible that, in a few years, solar panels will look more like thin films or paints than the panels we see today containing silicon solar cells. This could have far-reaching implications: Millions of cars would become miniature power stations, helping to power themselves and releasing any excess power to the grid. Paint could have so many uses beyond its original purpose. In just a few years we could be choosing between paint with solar power and self-cleaning paint – naturally with an unlimited colour palette. When we buy a car in the future, we won’t just be asking about the look and feel and colour of the paint: we want to know what it can do for us.
OASIS OF BLISS As soon as you pass through the entrance gates at the northern end, you find yourself immersed in an almost surreal world. Pebble Beach is something else.
E
vents such as the Tour d’Elegance, the Concorso Italiano, The Quail, Legends of the Autobahn are just part of the buildup to the highlight of the glorious Concours d’Elegance on the Sunday. To be invited here is to have made it in life. Dress ‘de rigueur’ is a navy blazer, beige trousers and preferably a light-coloured hat. The ladies dress for a summer garden party and sip champagne as conversation hops between the millions paid at the previous day’s auctions, domestic staff issues and of course the sun, which tries to break through the clammy fog as the morning advances. Genuine fans will not miss the opportunity to join the in-crowd at the ‘Legends of the Autobahn’ event on the Jack Nicklaus Golf Course. The star
this year: the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster with its very special blue-grey paintwork. As it nearly always is at Pebble Beach, the weather on this early Sunday morning is raw and damp. Mornings and evenings, the cool Pacific Ocean brings a strong influence to bear on the local sub-climate. Golfers like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer or Tiger Woods all have their own tales to tell about that from their record-breaking rounds on the legendary Pebble Beach Links. The US Open has taken place here five times so far – it will be returning in 2019, and with it what is arguably the most difficult finishing hole on the whole of the American continent. Not that the other 17 holes of what is one of the most exclusive golf clubs in the world present much less of a
challenge for the pros. On this Sunday morning, however, the talk is not about putts, birdies or bogeys, for the crowd here represents the world’s classic car elite and has been gathering since about 5.30 a.m. near the 18th hole. On this occasion it is not golfers but the world’s most exclusive vehicles that will be subjected to the eagle eyes of jury members and, later on, of a knowledgeable public. At six o’clock in the morning it’s still an exclusive crowd, but by eight things will be filling up, while from 10.30 a.m. onwards the big crowds will be rolling in, having paid 375 euros a ticket to attend this beauty contest. The most determined fans will have secured themselves one of the best places in front of the show ramp early on with a wellpositioned towel or rug. Shades here of the much-

berated Teutonic sun lounger baggers of Rimini or the budget holidaymakers on Majorca. The attention to detail shown in the Mercedes 300 SL Roadster is almost obsessive. The restoration took more than a year and a half before the car was revealed to its enthusiastic admirers in the USA. Of course on this cool morning, the favourites don’t arrive alone. Classic cars worth millions, from the polarising Ferrari 250 GT Boano, superb pre-war Packards and elegant Isotta Fraschinis through to elite limousines by Voisin and Delage, closely watched by their owners and service teams, roll at walking pace onto the hallowed turf that, today at least, represents the non plus ultra of the automobile world. Once in position on the meticulously marked-out parking area,
the cars are chamoised, polished and cleaned once again to absolute perfection. Here a little more wax, there another puff of air to dispel the brake dust and, inevitably, everyone keeps a cloth close to hand lest the perfect impression be ruined by a few droplets of fog. Many collectors have had to wait years for their personal pride and joy to be admitted to the Concours d’Elegance. This year once again among the line-up of exclusive gems: several rare classics from Mercedes-Benz. One of the most spectacular among them is the MercedesBenz 300 SL Roadster of 1957, which looks more at home here at Pebble Beach than ever as it celebrates its 60th birthday. ‘We wanted to bring a special vehicle to Pebble Beach to mark this birthday’, explained Patrik Gottwick, head
of the All Time Stars retail division of MercedesBenz Classic, ‘After what I feel sure has been an exciting life and several previous owners, this 300 SL simply deserves its place in the Concours d’Elegance.’ The recently restored luxury sports car, originally built in Sindelfingen, is a car like no other. The combination of blue-grey exterior paintwork (colour code 166) and mid-blue leather (colour code 333) in conjunction with the blue soft top and perfect chrome finish is probably unique – and certainly a glorious sight. Shortly after its arrival at Monterey Car Week, the open-top sun-worshipper created a sensation at the Tour d’Elegance in Carmel, before going on to win a special award in the Legends of the Autobahn concours.

GROVE HOUSE – NORTHUMBERLAND Grove House is situated in the heart of the coastal village of Bamburgh in the North East of England. Just a short walk from the jaw dropping Bamburgh Castle, wonderful beaches and golf course. Grove House as shown on the www.cottagesinnorthumberland.co.uk website, looks amazing. The owners have carefully developed and tailored this refurbished 19th Century property to create, real character. The modern elements are neatly styled into the raw interior of this old house, providing a superb sensory experience! The size of the property is one of the most surprising elements as it seems to go on forever. More doors lead to more luxurious rooms, with the property able to comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests for a large family or group of friends. For those seeking a breakaway for some privacy and luxury whilst able to enjoy some outdoor exploring, Grove House in Bamburgh has it all. The house has 4 stunning bedrooms, includes two large king size bedrooms with wonderful en-suite shower rooms. The third bedroom has a “zip and link” king size bed, which can be made up as two single beds upon request and the fourth bedroom has two single beds. The family bathroom has a bath with a shower over and there is an additional cloakroom with full laundry facilities. My personal favourite room in the property is the glamourous kitchen, which is fully-fitted with a range of modern facilities and a breakfast bar which resides at the rear of the property so you can look out to the delightful, conservatory and garden room. This area must be perfect on a hot day for you to unwind with a BBQ. A separate dining room just around the corner from the kitchen has a wood burning stove with plenty of wood on tap for those wanting to stoke up a fire and a spacious dining table to seat all the guests. The lounge at the front of the property, overlooks the village and also has a wood burning stove which provides a great room for all the family to relax in after your days out. To protect your Mercedes-Benz, at the rear of the property, the house has a large offroad private parking area for up to 4+ cars. In Bamburgh village itself, you can view a range of independent shops, tea rooms, cafes and renowned restaurants, as well as the Grace Darling Museum, St Aidan’s historic church and a fantastic golf course! Bamburgh was the historic capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom
of Northumbria boasting the king of Castles. Believed to have been occupied for over 10,000 years, the castle has evolved from a wooden palisade to the formidable fortress it is today. The first castle in England to fall to canon fire as the Wars of Roses drew to a close. It was also one of the world’s first ‘coastguard’ stations and the site for the development and testing of the World’s first ‘lifeboat’. Under the ownership of the Crewe Trustees it housed a school, hospital and was the centre of its own mini ‘welfare state’. Bought by the First Lord Armstrong in 1894 it is still owned by the Armstrong family who play an active part in its operation and maintenance. Alongside the castle resides the wonderful coastline, this open expanse of untouched North East coastline with wide sandy beaches is enjoyed by those wishing to take a stroll or see their dog enjoy the freedom of the beach. Even on a cold November day we saw surfers braving the sea, rather them than me. I would highly recommend walking on the beach just to cast an eye back inland to see the castle from the beach, which is quite a sight. Seahouses village, is just down the sea front road and includes an interesting harbour offering boat trips to the Farne Islands nature reserve and seabird sanctuary (National Trust). Kippers, fresh seafood and local shopping. Nearby is the historical town of Alnwick, renowned for its own dramatic historical castle, and thanks to a certain Harry Potter, it has become a must see for tourists and fans. Other local towns include Beadnell, a small coastal village with a lovely beach and water sports. Berwick offers a large market town with a variety of shops to peruse. Overall, Grove House provides the best in luxurious private accommodation in a wonderful village that has so much to see and do. It also offers a great base to visit other areas in the North East. A trip I will be personally be making again and again… MBO Member offer: Enjoy 10% off a 7 night stay at Grove House during 2018. To take advantage of this offer, please call the Cottages in Northumberland office on 0191 231 3020 quoting: MB17. Bookings must be made before 31 March 2018.
