Essential W123 guide
Record cars examined On 28 January 1938, driving the Mercedes W125 twelve-cylinder record-breaking car, racing driver Rudolf Caracciola established a world speed record on a public road: he reached 432.7 km/h over a flying kilometre on the autobahn between Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt. A shadow was cast on this success by the fatal accident of a competitor, Auto Union racing driver Bernd Rosemeyer, on the same day. Nonetheless, the fascination for high speed has lost none of its appeal to this day: the record was only broken almost 80 years later, in November 2017. What remains unbroken is the enthusiasm for the aesthetic appeal and technical pioneering spirit of the brand. An exciting cooperation project between the Mercedes design department and the University of Applied Sciences in Munich has concerned itself with the design reinterpretation of such recordbreaking cars – using innovative, cutting-edge electric drive systems. The result is outstanding design concepts for record-breaking cars capable of over 800 km/h.
Test drive initiative Mercedes is focusing on company car drivers by giving them the opportunity to test their new car in the real world, with a new 48-hour test drive initiative. Customers can choose to sample any model from the extensive Mercedes range for 48 hours. Each car is dropped off to and collected from the customer free of charge, and the cost of insurance is also covered by Mercedes-Benz. Rob East, Head of Fleet, Mercedes-Benz Cars UK, said: “Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, so we’ve made getting behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz as hassle-free as possible.” The campaign is designed specifically to meet the needs of end users and company car drivers, as well as fleet managers and leasing companies. The programme is being supported by national Facebook and LinkedIn marketing along with a targeted email campaign to over 200,000 fleet end user customers. 65 years of the Unimog Magazine The Unimog Guide first appeared in 1953 and was directed primarily at customers in the agricultural sector. An article under the heading ‘Time is money’, for example, talked about the higher speed of the Unimog compared with the slow-chugging tractors of the day: “Its speed cuts travelling times in half and by doing so plays a significant part in the rationalisation of farming. Owners of Unimog vehicles are able to cut their working time by a third - or even more - in this way.” In 1964 the Unimog even played matchmaker: a photograph of a young lady at the wheel of a Unimog in the magazine caught the eye of a nursery gardener. His interest stirred, the 34-year-old bachelor obtained her address from the editorial office and the wedding took place a year later - with four children joining them over the years at the family’s garden centre. These days the Unimog Magazine is published in English language twice a year. Some of the historical issues have acquired value as collectors’ items and have been known to sell for as much as 100 euros a copy.

Seven miles of finest racetrack Solitude Revival – a special festival of old motor vehicles and, more particularly, those with links to racing.
‘We present historical heritage on a historic circuit,’ bellows the voice through the loudspeaker system. Experts refer to the circuit on the outskirts of Stuttgart quite simply as ‘Solitude’, the name of the nearby Württemberg Palace. From 1903 onwards, Solitude first hosted motorcycle races, with car racing being added later. After the Second World War, the circuit even welcomed Formula One with all its international flair. In 1965, things then came to an end – to the great regret of many racing fans. Solitude Revival brings the great days of yesteryear back to life in a fun atmosphere – on the original, last-used circuit, which is seven miles in length and is now open to historical racing vehicles from various eras.

It was hailed as a spectacular and memorable commercial when it was shot back in 2012. Standing with two large suitcases to hand and a sports car at her side Dutch model Lara Stone looks like she’s about to make a quick getaway. But the 28-year-old model is posing for a Mercedes campaign to promote its new Fifties-inspired SL Roadster. The commercial was shot by photographer Alex Prager, who is famed for creating moody and visually striking scenes. He chose a desert close to LA as the backdrop with a wind machine used to simulate high winds while Lara was lifted off the ground using ropes. The dramatic shoot evokes scenes from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 film ‘North by Northwest’.

Restoring a rarity When Adrian Gattiker, in search of a special classic car, purchased the 300 SL he had no idea what rarity was hidden in this exclusive car built in 1955.
Experts pointed out the frame number to him. The digits 043 at the beginning normally stand for rare aluminium designs. Gattiker started doing his own research and consulted the experts at Mercedes-Benz. With the aid of the unbroken archive, the professionals were quite certain: the car was indeed one of the twenty-nine 300 SL CoupÊs with aluminium bodywork. When its historical provenance had been confirmed, Gattiker decided to have the car restored. He felt it particularly important that it wasn’t modernised at all but that its original condition should be maintained and the original quality should be revived as far as possible. That is why the Gullwing was taken apart right down to the last nut and bolt. It was possible to carry out such painstaking dismantling and reassembly thanks to the accurately kept Mercedes archive. In the historical documents listed there, every car is catalogued and described in fine detail.

Featured vehicles this month are the Prior Design X-Class, Absolute Motors G 500 4×4² and Carley Vito and V-Class.
Prior Design X-Class Prior Design is among the first to take a stab at customising the Mercedes X-Class by developing a series of aftermarket parts meant to transform the pickup truck into a more aggressive workhorse. The firm has decided to go with the top-of-the-range Power trim level and swap the standard alloys for a black set developed in-house. The body changes begin at the front where the Nissan Navara-based pickup can be fitted with a redesigned bumper hosting significantly larger air vents and a horizontal LED strip
on each side to serve as daytime running lights. The bumper appears to boast vents at its extremities and it has been teamed up with a spoiler lip, which probably won’t take too long until it will be damaged should you take the X-Class off road – which would be ill-advised, you’ll get it dirty. Prior Design has also given the front grille a menacing black look and can do the same thing to the standard bumper by painting the shiny chrome protective cladding underneath in matte black.

Absolute Motors G 500 4×4² Alpine skier Jon Olsson enjoys driving mean, close-to-1,000 horsepower specially prepared vehicles with wide bodykits and lots of carbon fibre details. His latest creation is the ‘Lord Hans’, essentially a Mercedes G 500 4×4² with tons of performance and visual modifications, named after the professional skier’s brother “who loves to explore the wilderness.” It started its life as a ‘regular’ G 500 4×4², but now has close to 800 horsepower (597 kilowatts) thanks to Dutch tuners from Absolute Motors. Aside from the
heavily reworked engine, this G-Class also features a modified suspension, new off-road tyres, and a matching camouflage black body colour with naked carbon fibre accents. There’s also an extensive light package, hiding behind massive protective bars at the front. Oh, and those wires between the bars and the roof are not decorative – they not only look cool, but also protect the windscreen and hold the front bars. A custom Brabus carbon fibre snorkel means you can drive the vehicle in really deep water.
Carley Vito and V-Class Carlex Design’s take on the Mercedes Vito and V-Class turns the vans into luxurious people-carriers with sporty exterior touches. The goal of this conversion, according to the tuning company, is to achieve “a more appealing and glaring look,” thanks to the full aerodynamic body kit with new bumpers, side skirts, rear diffuser with integrated
exhaust pipes, rear roof spoiler, and new five twin-spoke alloy wheels. Once you get inside the cabin, you’ll are surrounded by a luxurious atmosphere with leather seats, steering wheel, and gear shift. The interior is finished in black with many contrasting white stitches, as well as a couple of green stitches matching the exterior stripes.

outh Africa is the southern-most country on the continent where the human race began. The mother country. A direct flight to the only metropolis situated in the middle of a national park. With around four million inhabitants, Cape Town is the second largest city in the country after Johannesburg. And a dream destination for generations. Even the landing approach to the airport is an experience: to the right, the turquoise-coloured ocean and on the left Table Mountain and Lion’s Head at the foot of which Cape Town is situated. Starting from here, I am going to drive through the Western Cape region for the next two weeks. Without a defined destination. Or to be more precise: without a defined travel destination. The aim: just to travel. I have arranged to meet Marcus Hoelper at the airport; a German who earns his living renting classic Mercedes vehicles to tourists, photographers and locals. He is waiting with his 350 SE (W 116) in silver green metallic, but needs to leave soon for the next handover. So his instructions are brief: drive on the left, obviously. It’s a right-hand drive, of course. The spare wheel is in the boot. Oil too. Please check the coolant regularly. Any more questions? No?
Fine. Then have an exciting time. Have a good trip. See you in two weeks.” So here we are; the 350 SE and I. I take a good look at it from all perspectives. Its lines: clear. In contrast to modern bodies, the surfaces are of an almost simple structure. Chrome trims, aluminium, the baroque wheel rims, the wonderfully discreet colour – all that gives it a sovereign and elegant, almost glamorous appearance, even after 38 years. I stow away my suitcase in a boot the size of a cellar and go to the driver’s door … oops, that was the front-passenger door. So over to the driver’s door, I sit down in the armchair-like seats and adjust the mirrors. And start the V8 engine which snarls distinctly for a moment and then turns over rhythmically and almost without vibration. Indicate right and our adventure can begin. Nelson Mandela Boulevard, M2, leaving Cape Town. Past Woodstock. Palm trees waving in the wind remind me of the flailing hair of the hippies during a Janis Joplin concert. The V8 is the rhythm section. A monotonous humming sound, only interrupted by short solos consisting of aggressive snarls when overtaking. The accompanying theme: the rustling of the palm trees in the wind. I pass the exit at Stellenbosch

on the left. Maybe I’ll drive to the Winelands later. For the moment, I’m enjoying the smell of freshly burnt stubble from the fields. Close to Strand, I take the R44 in the direction of Betty’s Bay. On the left the steep mountains, towering up into the heavens. They rise up from the turquoise ocean on the right. In between runs one of the most beautiful roads in the world, which they have named the Whale Coast Route. Spacious beaches, devoid of people, black flags with sharks drawn on them. On the horizon, far beyond the Atlantic blue, you can make out the Cape of Good Hope and the Twelve Apostles in the haze of the day. See you soon, Cape Town. Baboons squat by the side of the road. The older ones gaze stoically towards the cliffs. The ocean doesn’t seem to be their thing. But it is mine. I drive on, mountains to the left, the ocean to the right. After days of sand and sea, of white and turquoise, I am drawn inland. There are many vineyards and fruit plantations and a lot of brown, barren landscape. From the top of the Tradaouw pass, the road is steep down to Barrydale. Putting the automatic into “N”, the downhill race can begin. The 350 SE starts rolling. And gets really fast. The tight bends allow a maximum of 120 km/h. A brief speed rush. And then I arrive in the valley: back to “D”. Drive and dream at around 70 km/h. I drive for what seems like an eternity without seeing a single soul. The road shimmers and my thoughts clear. “Rise early,” I was advised. While the valleys are still dark, the highest
peaks are just being caressed by the first light of the day. To the left lies the Swartberg Pass in the direction of Prins Albert. Gravel. The whole way, uphill, downhill, gravel. For 16 miles. Birds are standing aimlessly around on the road with dassies dozing next to them. Gemsboks are startled because usually no car drives this way at this time. The last clouds are disintegrating above the mountain range. The sky is nothing but blue from now on. It is cool up here. It’s an archaic mountain landscape, rough, barren, brown and black only, untouched. Of a simple, almost overwhelming beauty. Zigzagging steep bends, sometimes bordered by stone walls, sometimes with nothing. And then again and again, there is the view. It must be one of the most enchanting roads that man has ever built. In Prins Albert, I treat myself to a copious breakfast as the sun comes up. Afrikaans houses from the 18th century decorate the main road of the cosy, small town. Before setting off back, I drive to the only fuel station. Here in Africa, the following rule applies: always start your journey with a full tank, with enough oil and with at least 5 litres of water. So, back to the Swartberg Pass. At Eerste Water, a river with crystal-clear, cold mountain water, I have a break. The freshwater crabs as big as a man’s hand and the many small fish which are endemic to the region show no reaction to my feet in the water. Driving uphill, I drive straight into the sunlight: the star on the bonnet seems to melt into the grey-coloured gravel. I’m enjoying every moment.

hey combine powerful performance with sporty style and high efficiency. At their heart lies a new, electrified 3-litre engine featuring twin-turbocharging by means of an exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor. The 6 cylinder in-line engine generates 320 kW (435 PS) and delivers maximum torque of 520 Nm. Its EQ Boost starter-alternator momentarily provides an additional 16 kW of output plus 250 Nm of torque and additionally feeds the 48 V on-board electrics. Other technical highlights include the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and the fully variable all-wheel drive system AMG Performance 4MATIC+. Supported by the EQ Boost starteralternator when moving off, the electric auxiliary compressor builds up a high charge pressure without any delay, for a faster increase in torque for acceleration until the large exhaust gas turbocharger is deployed. As a result the 3.0-litre engine reacts spontaneously without turbo lag.
The power for the 48 V on-board electrical system is generated by the EQ Boost starteralternator. The conventional 12 V network is likewise supplied from the new network – using a DC/DC converter. Thanks to the 48 V battery, the overall battery capacity in the vehicle is increased, enabling more electrical energy to be made available. The 48 V on-board electrical system is therefore paving the way for further hybridisation. An additional advantage: the same power requires only a quarter of the current of a conventional system. The result is that the wiring can be thinner and therefore lighter, which indirectly contributes to saving fuel. The existing 12 V system supplies power to consumers such as lights, cockpit, infotainment displays and control units. Because the belt drive for ancillary components on the front edge of the engine is omitted, the installation length of the new six-cylinder engine is also significantly reduced compared with
conventional six-cylinder engines. This creates space for an exhaust gas after treatment system mounted near the engine, which is therefore particularly efficient. The standard-fit particulate filter is the only part of the exhaust system that is under the floor. Visually, too, the new 53-series models have a distinctive look. A feature common to the models is the twin-blade radiator grille in silver chrome, previously reserved for the V8 Performance models. Instead of the diamond radiator grille with individual pins, the grille in front of the central radiator now features a black lattice pattern. When viewed from the rear, it is not just the redesigned rear apron that stands out, but also the classic, round twin tailpipe trim elements in high-gloss chrome. The design of the sides of the mud flaps improves the aerodynamics at the rear: As a result this provides for better air flow around the wheel arches. The spoiler lip on the boot lid is painted in the body colour, but is optionally also

available in carbon-fibre. The interior of the new AMG models welcomes passengers with model-specific, exclusive appointments, luxurious materials and significantly extended options. On top of this there is the innovative control and display concept with bright, high-resolution displays optionally with 12.3-inch screen diagonal in each case. Visually, the two displays under one shared glass cover blend into a Widescreen Cockpit and as a central element consequently emphasise the horizontal orientation of the interior design. Whether automatic or initiated by the driver using the steering wheel shift paddles, upshifts or downshifts are implemented instantly. Especially in the ‘Sport+’ and in manual driving modes, the transmission is very responsive. Power is transferred to the road by the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, which also comes as standard. This intelligent system combines the advantages of different drive concepts: the fully variable torque distribution between the front and rear axle not only ensures optimal traction, but the driver is also able to rely on high handling stability and a high level of safety under all conditions, in the dry, in the wet or in snow. The transition from
rear-wheel to all-wheel drive and vice versa is seamless, because the intelligent control is integrated into the overall vehicle system architecture. he International Edelweiss Mountain Award is an event that takes place on the Rossfeld panoramic pass road between Berchtesgaden and Salzburg and harks back to the heyday of hill climb racing in the middle of the last century. It was a time when the Mercedes star shone brightly in the various international competitions in this discipline: Rudolf Caracciola and Hans Stuck won the European Hill Climbing Championship for sports cars three times in the years 1930 to 1932. Caracciola, lead driver at the time for the Mercedes racing department, was European Hill Climbing Champion in 1930 and 1931, while in 1932 the title went to Stuck, who became champion of the Alps in a Mercedes SSKL. Mercedes rekindled golden memories by sending an SSK to the event with Jochen Mass at the wheel. Hill climbs were first staged on the gravel
track that runs from Berchtesgaden to Obersalzberg in the years 1925 to 1928. The race, for cars and motorcycles, became known as the Salzburg race. The Rossfeld race marked a revival of this tradition between the 1950s and the 1970s. Jochen Mass was one of those who took part in the race, in 1969 and then again in 1971. In those days, the race also counted as a heat towards the European Hill Climbing Championship. “The Rossfeld has always had a very particular attraction for me”, says Mass of this historic route. “It brings together landscape and motor racing in a very special way.” Meanwhile, Karl Wendlinger took to the wheel of the AMG 300 SEL 6.8 ‘Red Giant’, throwing the spotlight on a younger facet of motorsport history. It was at the wheel of this touring car that Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz won a surprising class victory and second place overall at the 24-hour race
at Spa, Belgium in 1971. The winning car was developed by the then virtually unknown AMG, founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. The modified vehicle was based on the 300 SEL 6.3 which, with an output of 250 hp (184 kW), was absolutely unrivalled in its day. But Aufrecht and Melcher made the fastest German series-production car of the period even more powerful: engine capacity grew from 6330 cc to 6835 cc, and the output of the improved V8 engine increased to 428 hp (315 kW). The win in the race at Spa marked the breakthrough for AMG and was to be followed by further victories. The original car from 1971 no longer exists, but in 2006 the AMG 300 SEL 6.8 was re-developed in a detailed reconstruction. It has been an immensely potent ambassador of Mercedes-AMG history on each of its appearances ever since.

hree decades ago, two exclusive Mercedes models celebrated their premiere: The 190 E 2.5-16 (201 series) prepared the way for the then compact class to become a star performer, while the 560 SE (126 series) combined the top performance of the flagship S-Class model with the more dynamic handling of the shorter wheelbase. It is hard to believe that the first examples of these two models are now 30 years old. All in all, fewer than 7000 examples of these rare Mercedes models were produced after they celebrated their premiere at the Paris Motor Show in September 1988: No more than 5743 units of the 190 E 2.5-16 highperformance saloon were produced between 1988 and 1993. And between 1988 and 1991, just 1252 units of the 560 SE were produced. That makes this short-wheelbase version of the S-Class a much rarer classic than its sister model, the 560 SEL (75,071 units). The 560 SEL is “quite simply the largest, fastest and best equipped passenger car currently produced by Daimler-Benz,” wrote the motoring magazine “auto motor und sport”. So was it not only logical to make this sporty, luxurious performance available in a model with a short wheelbase
as well (2930 rather than 3070 millimetres). This was achieved by the 560 SE of 1988, which was likewise powered by a V8 engine with a displacement of 5547 cc and developed 220 kW (300 hp) at 5000 rpm. With the emissions control system using a three-way catalytic converter, the output was 205 kW (279 hp) at 5200 rpm. The 190 E 2.5-16 was conceived as a sporty high-performance saloon. Its engine was based on the sixteen-valve four-cylinder of the 190 E 2.316. The engineers opted for an increase in the stroke to increase output to 143 kW (195 hp). Externally the sporty high-performance saloon was substantially identical to its predecessor. New features included the metallic paint finishes “almandine red” and “astral silver” as alternatives to “blue black” and “smoke silver”. In its Evolution stages I and II, of which a small series of 500 examples each was built in 1989 and 1990, the 190 E 2.5-16 was the basis for the highly successful Group A racing touring cars which AMG-Mercedes used in the German Touring Car Championships (DTM). Between 1988 and 1993 Mercedes won two constructors’ titles (1991 and 1992), and Klaus Ludwig became DTM champion in the 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II in 1992.

Mercedes-BENT 190 SL This is, or was, a 1961 Mercedes 190 SL. Its owner loved the lines (who wouldn’t?), but wanted a car he could just jump into and drive whenever he felt like it, while retaining the feel of a classic machine. This could only be achieved by ingenuity, hard work and a lot of money. To ensure reliability, it was decided to ditch the original 50-year-old engine with its tricky Solex carburettors, in favour of a Mercedes twin-turbo V12 as found in the SL 600. Trying to fit a V12 into the space allocated for an inline-four was never going to work, so the decision was taken to rebuild the old car around the new engine and cut the body away - easier said than done! To take the newer metal’s place, the 190’s bodywork had to be widened by 6 inches, and another 8 inches were eased into the length, in five separate places along each flank. Naturally, things like the grille and bumpers were no longer the right size, and the door handles seemed out of proportion. So replacements were manufactured. It was a similar story for the windscreen frame, which also required custom glass. At least the retractable three-layer fabric roof was OEM, and many of the modern SL’s amenities could be retained, such as the pedals, electrics and wiring harnesses, gauges, air conditioning and even the satellite navigation system. Behind the ’60s lenses of the front and rear lights is modern SL illumination, subjected to heavy adaptation. Sadly, the
airbags had to go, since they hadn’t been invented when the 190’s body was designed. Elsewhere in the cabin are hand-built bezels and heating vents, along with a custom steering wheel. The seats from the younger car were cut down, reshaped and re-covered to simulate period-correct chairs while preserving their power adjustment and heating functions. The same rich red with hints of terra cotta hide was used to fashion a bespoke luggage set that fills the boot so elegantly. The 20-inch wheels are another custom contribution. Their three-pointed star emblems over the hubs are attached in such a way that they always remain upright. A little touch of gangster can sometimes be a good thing. All the drivetrain work was done by Renntech, the Florida-based tuning house run by Hartmut Feyhl. A German by birth, he grew up in Affalterbach, the village that puts the A into AMG, where he was an apprentice, going on to become a master mechanic and then technical director of AMG’s North American headquarters. An ideal choice, then, to conjure some more power from an engine that leaves the factory with 493 hp at 5000 rpm and 590 lb-ft of torque at

1800 rpm. The ECU and TCU (transmission control unit) were both reflashed with software developed in-house, and the turbo system was augmented by Renntech’s intercooler upgrade programme, which includes a new pump that handles a greater flow of coolant, plus all the attendant plumbing and electrical connections. The stock turbochargers run at 14.5 psi; Renntech boosted that to 21 psi. Measured at the wheels, the new output is 650 hp at 5500 rpm and 785 lb-ft at 2000 rpm, quite enough to get someone into a heck of a lot of trouble while enjoying every second.
Mercedes is a company known for over-engineering. For example, the fivespeed automatic transmission that usually accompanies this V12 can handle its torque and then some. But Feyhl’s AMG background couldn’t stop him from leaving things alone. “With increased performance, it becomes necessary to improve the driveline components,” says Dan Steinhauser, designer at Renntech, “to ensure maximum power goes to the driven wheels without transmission slippage.” Steinhauser says this cannot be done by software alone, but with a mechanical
upgrade to the clutch packs, as well as a complete rebuild using new gaskets seals, O-rings, electrical connectors and a new transmission pan filter. On a serious car with serious performance and production values, one little piece of humour has crept in. The traditional blue-and-chrome Mercedes badge with the laurel wreath has been subverted with a hand-made example. The wording actually says: Mercedes Bent, the name coming about because the old body was bent around the newer engine.

aint protection is perhaps the most common topic we are quizzed on by Mercedes owners when it comes to car care and detailing. In the olden days wax was the only option, a throw-back to protecting the enamel paint used on horse-drawn carriages. Over the last century, automotive paint has gone through many developments: the nitro-cellulose used on Model K Mercedes is, perhaps unsurprisingly, entirely different from the isocyanate-based paint used on a 1970's W114, which in turn, is just as far removed from the water-based lacquers that coat the latest offerings from Stuttgart. As paint has evolved, so have the methods to protect it, leaving the modern Mercedes owner with a potentially bewildering array of options that we will delve into here. As with many good things in life, the forbearer of car wax started in Germany at the turn of the nineteenth century. Fans of history will know that this pre-dated the invention of the motorcar itself, thus these early emulsions of animal fats and naturally-occurring waxes were only later adapted for automotive application. You may have heard of 'Carnauba' - a naturally occurring wax from a Brazilian tree that has been used since 1910 and still forms the mainstay of waxes today. Beeswax, Montan, and paraffin waxes are often blended with Carnauba to form what we classi fy as organic waxes. These provide a high gloss, deep lustre, some filling ability - thus masking swirl marks - and last from one to six months depending on which blend you choose. The next development was in the late 1960's, when paints themselves had already moved on somewhat, with a much more diverse colour palette and even metallic finishes. Polymer Sealants offered longer-lasting protection than waxes and in some respects, were better suited to the lacquers used on contemporary cars. As with waxes, polymer sealants are still widely used now, particularly in the new car protection products offered by car dealers. While some still broadly rely on the technology from the 1970's, they have been developed and honed to offer better gloss and greater longevity. Perhaps the greatest development has been with Silane and Siloxane-based sealants that can endure for well over a year, while simultaneously providing that hydrophobic surface that makes water droplets bead on paintwork. Polymer sealants would have made conventional waxes obsolete if it wasn't for the fact that waxes have been evolving at a similar rate and adopting some of the same polymer technology. Thus we have a range of polymer and hybrid waxes - the
former are essentially a paste version of the liquid polymer sealants. The 'hybrid' wax however, is blend of synthetic polymers, offering improved durability and ease of use, combined with the gloss and depth you get courtesy of organic wax. In the last three years these have spawned what we call a 'ceramic hybrid wax' which combines organic wax, polymer sealant technology, and a smattering of silicon dioxide (SiO2). This brings us to the penultimate paint protection technology - ceramic coatings - which offer years of protection and even an element of abrasion resistance. Also known as glass coatings thanks to the Si02 component, these are best applied by professional detailers but will outlast any wax or polymer sealant. Despite their 'on-paper' advantages, many still prefer the ease of a polymer sealant or the warm lustre of an organic wax - it's just a matter of choosing what befits your needs best. For those wanting the ultimate protection for their Benz, there is a final option, Paint Protection Film (PPF). Like ceramic coatings, this really needs to be applied by a professional, and you are unlikely to get much

change from five thousand pounds for a completely covered car, but the resulting protection is unmatched by any other product this side of armour plating or re-lacquering. The latest generations of PPF are even self-healing - if you get a scratch it can be repaired with little more than a hair-dryer - though obviously if you hit a tree at the national speed limit it won't be particularly useful. One final word on terminology - 'wax' and 'polish' are not interchangeable any more. In the early days when waxes had an abrasive texture designed to restore the rapidly-dulling enamel paint, the terms were more closely aligned - indeed there were products called 'wax polishes'. For those with colour televisions however, a wax - whether organic, polymer, hybrid, liquid or paste, is a substance that coats a surface without altering it. Conversely, a polish, aggressive versions of which are termed 'compounds', physically or chemically abrade the surface, thus changing it. There are 'all-in-one' waxes and polishes, and indeed polishes that supposedly offer wax protection, but that is a huge topic that we won't bore you with today!

The car was just 20 years old when the wealthy bourgeoisie began to expect more: no longer seen as purely a means of transport, it was also supposed to make a good impression.
L
eading the way was indefatigable businessman Emil Jellinek, who in those days played a decisive role in driving forward the development of the motor car. “I am not interested in today’s car or tomorrow’s – I want the car of the day after tomorrow!” was his maxim. In 1904 Jellinek had a touring car built which already embodied some of the fundamental characteristics of a state vehicle. With an engine output of 60 hp, the comfortable and imposing saloon was in the upper echelons of the model hierarchy of the day. As was usual at that time, initially the driver – generally an employee of the owner – had little protection against the elements: only the rear part of the vehicle, reserved for passengers, had side windows and doors. This did not change until some years later, as the closed design of saloons also gradually started to incorporate the driver’s area. Jellinek’s touring car too was fitted with an enclosed driver’s seat around 1912. In those days, the nobility still preferred horses and carriages. Tsar Nicholas, for example, is reported to have been a riding enthusiast who valued old customs and he apparently initially took a sceptical stance towards the motor car. The German Emperor Wilhelm II is also said to have been cool to begin with too. He is reported as having said: “I believe in the horse.
The automobile is only a temporary phenomenon”. Despite his initial doubts, even the German Emperor could soon no longer escape the fascination for the new technology. While at an automotive exhibition in Berlin in 1903, he had the starting procedure for a Mercedes Simplex explained to him by Daimler’s then Head of Design, Wilhelm Maybach. The Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft had introduced the designation ‘Simplex’ to refer to the model’s simple operation, but after Maybach’s presentation the Emperor is reported to have replied: “A truly beautiful engine you have here! But it’s not as simple as that, you know.” In the meantime, an increasing number of prominent personalities began to show enthusiasm for the horseless motorised carriages. As a result, after the start of the 20th century the motor car gradually won over the nobility, and the horse stables were eventually converted into large garages. No other automotive brand has as a long tradition in luxury class motor cars as Mercedes-Benz. Representative vehicles have been an important part of the model range since the origins of the Mercedes brand. Characterised by high levels of comfort, elegance and safety, they have left a lasting impression by shaping the development of the motor car in their respective eras.
