“Tagine” is a multi-purpose word in Moroccan culture used to describe the earthen, coneshaped, tabletop cooking vessel used to steam dishes and impart flavor; it is also a category of recipes prepared within the very vessel. Tagines serve as both the cooking vessel and the serving dish for double-duty use.
The reason this cooking method has endured for so long is that tagines allow food to caramelize while cooking and to stay warm for longer when serving. By virtue of slow-cooking meat at low temperatures, effectively braising it until tender, a variety of cuts can be used. Take it from Paula Wolfart, author of “The Food of Morocco.” She writes, “clay pots coddle food, bringing forth bright, natural flavors and an unctuous tenderness. Clay pots produce tender, juicier, tastier meat without basting and often with less fat; they heat evenly; they retain moisture, so the food remains succulent.”
We highly recommend curing your tagine before first use. Scan this QR code for care instructions.

“I am 37 years old, and I have been doing pottery since I was five years old. Most of my family make ceramics—my father and uncle and cousins. I worked for my uncle to start with and started my own business twelve years ago. Now I work with my two brothers.
“My home is in the village of Ourika, which is 45 km from Marrakesh and is at the base of the Atlas Mountains. The workshop is about 10 km away. My village is small and is beside the river where I have a small shop. I supply lots of shops in Marrakesh and also export.
“There are fourteen workers. Some throw the items, others decorate, and others load and unload the kilns. I have just purchased my second kiln which makes me very happy, and it has doubled our capacity. First, we do a bisque fire for nine hours, then let it cool. Then we do a glaze fire for ten hours, then let it cool for eight hours.
“I use the red clay from our area and use lead-free glazes from Europe. I love my work and supply a lot of bisque-fired pottery to other traders who do their own decorations and glazing. I have an artist from France who comes to my workshop, and he does some special decorating which helps me learn.”

Rahab’s Rope
Rahab’s Rope exists to empower women and children in the fight against human trafficking. The founder and her team seek to equip women with the skills to live a life of hope and sustainability. Through the provision of a safe and loving environment, basic education, and vocational training, the artisans are empowered to grow and develop physically, mentally, financially, and spiritually.
Adil is a diligent wood artisan working with an artisan group of Asha Handicrafts Association for many years. As a child, he observed and engaged with artisans who shaped pieces of wood into beautiful, artistic goods.
He discontinued his studies and began to work as a teenager. Learning at a young age, he mastered the skill and it became his passion. He was introduced to the fair trade artisan group by a friend and finally found a place where he could work consistently.
Adil is a daily wage worker and receives timely wages when there is a large order. He desires a steady flow of orders which will provide income for his family on a regular basis.
The income received from his work provides for the needs of his family. Asha Handicrafts Association assists Adil with educational aid for his 11-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter. His family was also provided rations and food essentials during the worldwide COVID pandemic.
In line with fair trade principles, Asha continues to support his children so that they will be educated and have brighter opportunities in the future.

Made by Prodigal Pottery in the USA Handwash only.
The women of Prodigal Pottery handcrafted this ceramic herb stripper dish for Grace Case members. Use the holes to strip the leaves off your favorite herbs. Pull the stem through the smallest hole it will fit through, then use the bowl to store the leaves.
Prodigal Pottery
Just outside Birmingham, Alabama, Prodigal Pottery works directly out of a women’s shelter for those fleeing homelessness and domestic abuse. The organization also partners with a local safe house for women fleeing sex trafficking.
Prodigal Pottery offers employment to women who otherwise may not find it. Many of the women they serve have been trapped in a cycle of chronic homelessness due to felonies on their records, open court cases, or emotional trauma. The women are not turned away based on their pasts but instead employed to help them take control of their futures.
Prodigal Pottery equips women with skills needed to succeed in life, such as financial training, emotional care, professional skills, and assistance in finding a stable residence. Their greatest desire for their women is that they would walk out the doors of Prodigal Pottery every day knowing they are strong, capable, and loved— and that the Lord has a powerful and important plan for their life.
This order of herb stripper bowls was a huge blessing for the women of Prodigal Pottery. The artisans were very excited about learning to make a brand new item. This provided them with an opportunity to be challenged in a different light. It also allowed Prodigal Pottery to hire a new artisan and start making a difference in her life.
Meredith“As a child, I was molested and my mother was a single mom and my father was not present. My mom used drugs for quite some time during my childhood. As a teenager, I also became addicted to drugs. I soon was a dropout and arrested and was in and out of jail. I started a life of prostitution very young when I was only fifteen years old. My family begged me to come home, but the shame and fear kept me bound in drugs and alcohol and the lifestyle I was leading.
“God saw fit that I wouldn’t quit on my own. He intervened and had me arrested for some big charges that would send me to prison if I didn’t testify against my trafficker. I sat in jail for a year because I was so scared of him and what he would do. But the Lord intervened in my life, and I entered a rehab program. I have messed up many times, but God continues showing his love and grace. Because Wellhouse, the program I attended, didn’t give up on me, I am now in school for a degree in exercise science. I have a full-time job at Prodigal Pottery, I have been sober for over two years. The best part is that I have a healthy relationship with my family and friends.
“Today I have hope and love where I was once filled with hate, depression, and suicide. I have overcome addiction and am on a path toward recovery and restoration and I love the motto, ‘one day at a time, even baby steps.’”
