Endeavors of Excellence Meredith’s faculty has long been known for their passion for and commitment to teaching. Their excellence as teachers is both reinforced and informed by their equal passion for scholarship, as can be seen by the range of opportunities for professional involvement and success presented in this report. From publishing books and scholarly articles to fulfilling leadership roles in their professional organizations, from serving as jurors and adjudicators to performing and exhibiting original works of art, from winning awards that recognize their academic contributions to presenting at international conferences, Meredith faculty are truly leaders in their fields. Meredith is proud to celebrate the many accomplishments of its faculty. You are invited to share in that celebration by reading this report, all the while recognizing that their greatest accomplishment remains the academic and professional success of Meredith students and alumnae. The achievements of our students and graduates are a direct result of the tireless and enthusiastic efforts of our faculty to share their love of learning—efforts that are rewarded many times over.

Jim Waddelow Assistant Professor of Music Mus.B., Mus.M, University of Central Oklahoma D.M.A., Texas Tech University Joined Meredith faculty in 2007

Why Music? “I have always been interested in both orchestra education and the mediums of operetta and early American musical theater. The string pedagogy stems from my days teaching orchestra in the public schools, while my first professional conducting opportunities were in the theater.”

Current Projects “By creating White Iris Light Opera, I have been able to marry the two subjects I am most passionate about. I am a collaborator by nature, and the idea of bringing Meredith singers, instrumentalists and theater majors together on one project is both appealing and rewarding. I am also conducting research on the area of collaboration in theater from an orchestral conducting perspective, which will culminate in a series of articles.”

Teaching at Meredith “At Meredith I am able to really get to know the people whom I teach. This was not always the case when I worked for a large state institution. I love the fact that the class sizes here almost always ensure that each student gets the material. I also like that by nature the performance of music is a subjective art form. I enjoy the journey of each student, as they each enter with a set of skills, talents, histories and experiences.”

Preparing Students to Succeed “Regardless of what career a woman prepares for, the skill sets that she uses as a member of the orchestra are extremely desirable to employers of any field. Playing an instrument requires self-control, time management, patience and a good sense of humor. On the collective level, each member plays a critical role in the execution of a larger work. The problemsolving and communication skills that come with playing in a symphony have an invaluable carryover. I enjoy teaching something I know students will be able to enjoy and appreciate the rest of their lives.”

Why Economics? “I have always enjoyed economics from the first course I took as an undergraduate. When I started to work after receiving my bachelor’s degree, I noticed that men were mostly in managerial positions and women were in supporting positions. As a student, I don’t think I ever felt any discrimination because I am female, but I definitely noticed gender as an issue in the workplace. I returned to college for my graduate degrees in economics so that I could do research on the labor market.”

Current Projects “My article, ‘Gender Differences in the College and Career Aspirations of High School Valedictorians,’ was published in the Journal of Advanced Academics. This research was also featured in an education blog on The New York Times website and in the publication Education Week. With this research, I showed that equally smart students had significantly different plans for their college majors and careers based on their gender.”

Future Research “I am finishing up an article with Marilyn Dutton, a colleague in the School of Business, on how differences in religious beliefs affect the accumulation of household wealth. We are finding that those who take a more literal interpretation of the Bible have lower wealth. I also would like to research how religious beliefs affect the earnings of wives in dual earner couples.”

Empowering Students “Understanding economics is of vital importance, particularly to help our students open their eyes to a world beyond their own and understand their own world better. While businesses use economics to help them price their products and increase their profits, there is more to economics than that. As we see from this year’s summer reading selection, Half the Sky, women need economic empowerment in order to gain more self-sufficiency

and make their lives and the lives of their families better.”

Monica McKinney Associate Professor of Education B.A., Ph.D., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Joined Meredith faculty in 2000

Why Education? “My scholarly interests and my teaching are closely connected—one informs the other. I am fascinated by the relationship between schools and society. Looking at how schools have attempted to and continue to try to meet the needs of society is a major focus of both the undergraduate and graduate foundations courses I teach.”

Research Interests “Much of my work is related to various aspects of educational reform. My recently co-authored book, Creating and Sustaining Arts-based School Reform: The A+ Schools Program, explores resilience in K-12 educational reform. This publication culminates more than 10 years worth of involvement in a project that studied schools’ initial implementation and the ongoing commitment to an arts-enhanced curriculum reform. These “A+” Schools can be found throughout North Carolina and the program has ventured into other states and abroad.”

Future Projects “One area of increasing tension in our schools is how to support and meet the needs of our immigrant students. I am currently taking classes to earn a master’s-level English-as-a-SecondLanguage (ESL) teaching license. Having this additional expertise will not only enhance my teaching but also open up new avenues for research and school involvement for me.”

Challenging Students “I enjoy challenging my students to think beyond their taken-forgranted beliefs about schools. So many people think they know how schools work because they’ve been there as students, but there is so much more to think about: Why schools look and operate the way they do. Where they are succeeding and where they need to improve. How they hope to address the needs of the 21st century. Helping my students grow into conscientious, reflective teachers who strive to educate the minds, spirits and bodies of their students is very rewarding. Seeing them step into leadership roles that benefit their schools and communities is highly gratifying.”

Gwynn Morris Assistant Professor of Psychology B.S., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill M.S., North Carolina State University Ph.D., North Carolina State University Joined Meredith faculty in 2008

Why Psychology? “I have been fascinated with human development my entire life. As a child, when other kids were claiming they wanted to be astronauts and superstars, I wanted to be a ‘baby researcher.’ As I grew older, I found that I really wanted to investigate questions about human development on a broader scale. Why do we think the way we think? How do we learn to be ourselves? These kinds of questions spark my curiosity and drive my scholarly pursuits.”

Research Interests “My scholarly interests revolve around human development and memory. Memory is the cognitive basis of learning and is critical to our adaptation and survival in our given environments. In fact, there is little that we as humans do that does not involve some aspect of memory. I am most interested in autobiographical memory, defined as a specific kind of episodic memory for personally experienced events.”

Recent Projects “I co-published an article this year in Applied Cognitive Psychology titled, ‘What remains of that day: The survival of children’s autobiographical memories across time.’ This study explored why some early childhood memories remain in autobiographical memory, whereas others fade into oblivion even before childhood ends. I’m fortunate to be surrounded by a vibrant community of scientists here in the Triangle who are interested in development—many of us are part of the Center for Developmental Science (CDS), a collaboration of researchers from area colleges and universities that offers a forum to discuss recent trends in the field.”

Guiding Students “There are many things I enjoy about Meredith students. As a developmentalist, I enjoy watching the freshmen grow into mature women over their four years here. As a researcher, I love seeing students light up with new ideas and then learn the tools to test their hypotheses. As a teacher, I like seeing students apply what they learn in class in real life situations.”

Kassy Mies Assistant Professor of Chemistry B.S., Randolph-Macon College Ph.D., Duke University Joined Meredith faculty in 2007

Why Chemistry? “I became interested in chemistry during my freshman year of college. I had a great professor, and I particularly enjoyed the way that he used chemistry to explain fundamentally how things work by breaking them down to the molecular level. In graduate school, I realized that bioinorganic chemistry allowed me to use chemistry to research medicinal, biological and environmental problems, all of which interest me very much.”

Research Interests “I am currently exploring three different projects with students. We are examining the mechanism of metal induced aggregation of the beta-amyloid peptide in order to better understand the cause of the formation of senile plaques in Alzheimer’s disease; we are exploring the reactivity of natural and synthetic siderophores as potential medicinal therapies in the treatment of iron-overload disease and bacterial infections; and, finally, we have developed and are testing a device that extracts heavy metal ions from a contaminated body of water as a potential water purification system.”

Supporting Student Research “When I work with research students, I love the one-on-one interaction that allows me to get to know them on a more personal level. Last year one of my students presented her work on the mechanism of the formation of senile plaques in Alzheimer’s disease at a national American Chemical Society conference. I was proud of both the work that she had done to be selected to present at the meeting and in her ability to professionally summarize her results and present them to a public audience.”

Engaging Students “I believe that my students have a much greater desire to learn if they can see how the information applies to the real world. I know that I am doing my job well when students stop thinking about what is going to be on the test and start asking how the information applies to something that they have encountered in life.”

Why Library Science? “My scholarly interests arise from my love of challenges and problem solving, and include bibliographic control, information literacy and web usability and design. As a young librarian, I became intrigued by the direct link between bibliographic control and the retrieval of information. Bibliographic control is an area of librarianship experiencing upheaval because of the evolution of information resources and technological advances. For this reason revisions to the current standards, with an eye toward flexibility and adaptability, are being considered.”

Current Project “As a member of the library’s web team, I have worked with the library design team since its first web design project. Library websites, or our “digital branches” as I have started to think of them, must accomplish the same goals as the physical buildings—our web presence should reflect the same research expertise, student engagement and individualized attention that our users expect when visiting our physical libraries. In the next year, we plan to unveil a new design. I am excited by the prospect of connecting with our users in new ways, while providing ease of use and clear paths to information.”

Empowering Students “In teaching information literacy, I help students recognize when they need information, develop the skills that they need in order to locate and evaluate that information, and to use information effectively and responsibly. Information literacy enables students to make more informed decisions about all areas of their lives—and providing students with a skill set that will serve them the rest of their lives is exciting for me.”
