Valerie Breese visits The London Door Company On a crisp morning in February I parked up outside the Penge office of The London Door Company. I wasn’t exactly sure whether I was expecting an Aladdin’s cave of thousands of doors or perhaps a dusty artisan’s workshop. I was, however, pleased to find a clean and crisp modern showroom and a warm welcome. I had arranged to meet James Williamson who runs this most recent addition to The London Door Company’s list of showrooms. Once I was comfortably settled with a coffee in hand, James was happy to explain that all the doors are made to order in the company’s own workshops in Wimbledon, and that the showroom had been carefully set up to show all the various details that can be used to recreate almost any London door style. I quickly learned how different doors suit different periods of house and from the many photos dotted around the room it’s clear the difference a door can make. While we were talking a couple with two young children popped in to take a look. I could see they were not exactly sure what to expect either, but James quickly welcomed the family and set about getting some toys to occupy the children. With a few well thought-out questions from James, the couple were soon shown a door that they agreed not only matched their house but fulfilled the requirements for a particular glass and even paint colour. I could see they were now really getting a picture of exactly what could be achieved. James went on to talk through a range of timbers including Accoya® - which apparently has up to 85% better stability than teak, with the added benefit of being entirely ecologically friendly – the supply and fitting of locks and furniture, the essential draught-proofing and even a choice of paint finishes. After arranging a meeting the following evening for James to pop by and measure up and talk costs it was clear that they were looking forward to their new front door. The approach at The London Door Company is very informative and professional, while being approachable and inclusive. I very much enjoyed my London Door experience and I can see that with 30 years of making doors behind them the passion is still alive. Getting the home ready to put it on the market...

n a buyer’s market doing everything you possibly can to give your house the ‘edge’ over the competition could mean the difference between selling or not. The view from the road is the first impression prospective buyers get and it should be inviting. Your house may need just a quick makeover, from a new front gate, weeds removed from the garden and new plants planted, to a repointing of the front wall or fixing a wobbly flagstone. Do find a way to camouflage the wheelie bins if they have to live in the front garden. After a cold wet winter the paintwork will look dull and painted walls may have a green patina, which should be scrubbed away. A coat of paint will brighten the look of the house and give it ‘kerb appeal’. The front door should look solid and in good shape… and don’t let your windows let you down. If you have maintained your home on a regular basis there shouldn’t be too much to be done, but sometimes we put things off until tomorrow and don’t get round to fixing simple faults that then become larger problems. New buyers don’t want to buy a home that will cost them more money as soon as they move in. Windows tend to be neglected the most; if you have timber frames they are very durable and if taken care of will last for decades, but they will require periodic maintenance. Rattling, ill-fitting drafty windows can easily be remedied, but if the windows are old and rotten it will be time to replace them with new well-fitted sashes. If the box frames are salvageable and in good condition, new doubleglazed sashes can be fitted to the existing frames making a considerable saving. New windows can transform the look of the property inside and out and the cost is an investment in the property, which can be reflected in its price and saleability. Many of our homes are covered by conservation orders or are listed, and period features like windows have to be as original – and that means timber. If the windows are old and rotten it makes more sense and is cost-effective to replace them. If you are drawn to the qualities of PVCu or aluminium, which require very low maintenance, you could replace your old windows, again an investment in your home that makes your property more desirable to a new owner. Spring of course is an explosion in itself, when plants shrug off winter and burst into life with a riot of colour and fragrance. Now’s the time to get ‘hands on’. You don’t have to be a plantoholic to brighten up the dullest of shady spots or make the most out of a tiny space specially reserved for those quiet moments we all need. The best designs, like the paperclip, are the ones, which are the simplest. Sandstone can give a modern edge to a patio or seating area while traditional Yorkstone will provide a timeless quality to period properties, but there are so many materials to choose from you really can make a personal statement that reflects the living space indoors. When choosing plants, be adventurous but take advice on how fast they grow, particularly if you don’t have much room. If you want privacy, before reaching for the hammer or trowel, consider going green and think of hedging first. Not just a cheaper option but the local wildlife will love you for it. Lighting is something some people shy away from under the false impression that it’s not beneficial to the environment but what is more ecologically friendly, being outdoors with a few low wattage LED lights on enjoying the garden, or being indoors watching a huge TV screen? Modern lighting has increased longevity, too, ensuring your investment lasts for years to come. There are few things more satisfying than looking back on your endeavours, knowing you helped the local wildlife and increased the value of your property at the same time. EMILE AZAN OF CHAMELEON DESIGNS discusses colour trends… One of the big trends for interior colour schemes is Cosmetic shades - such as peachy and blush tones. They have a very soft aesthetic that’s warm, calming, reassuring and relaxing, and are now a great way to move beyond standard and slightly pedestrian creams and beiges. If you are feeling more
daring, then go for something a bit brighter, such as apricot or an uplifting coral. In this palette you can also include soft greys and lilacs. At the other end of the spectrum, one of the key colours for spring has been Gucci purple, which is now filtering through to bathroom design. Rich, jewel-like and velvety colours like this help to create a luxurious and cocooning feel. A mistake people make, particularly if they have a smaller bathroom, is to think that they have to paint it white in order to make it feel bigger, when actually this will probably make the space feel cold. What is more important than size is that the room feels like a wonderful place to spend time and relax in, so although a dark colour won’t increase the feeling of space it can make it look extremely sumptuous. Another rule made to be broken is the idea that a bathroom should be blue. We often turn to blues as an easy option and because of its water connotations. If you really want to use the colour blue, make a statement with a Sapphire blue or Turquoise.
