The Green Chain Walk Shows You the Countryside on Your Doorstep
LOVE LOCA L
It may be grey and cold outside but if you wrap up and set off for a bracing walk along one of the Green Chain Walks, you’ll discover how green our local area is.
Nordic Walking
The Green Chain was set up in 1977, within local authorities, and is a network of over 300 open spaces in south east London that stretches from Erith Riverside in Kent to the more urban green spaces of Peckham and Nunhead within inner London. The partnership is core funded by the local authorities of Bexley, Lewisham, Royal Greenwich and Southwark. The Green Chain has sometimes been compared to a mosaic or a patchwork quilt because within it there are such a wide variety of open spaces to discoverfrom ancient woodlands and wild nature reserves to playing fields and golf courses. It even has a park reserved for dinosaurs. Much of the Green Chain is on the urban fringe; so called because the open spaces are located on the edge of town. The term ‘Green Chain’ means that the open spaces that comprise the landscape of the Green Chain are collectively protected through the local authority planning policy, having the same protected status as the Green Belt land. Despite housing growth and urban expansion, thanks to the foresight of our town planners and community stakeholders, south east London has managed to retain a surprising amount of green space. The Green Chain alone comprises over 7 square miles of open space- that’s seven times the size of the City of London.
The Green Chain Walk is the name of the signposted network of footpaths that link the open spaces together and bring a sense of cohesion to the wider landscape. The walk is 50 miles long, so you would not be expected to complete it in a single day. Most people complete it in chunks of up to 5 miles or so and is conveniently linked to train stations nearby. There is a wide variety of activities available for all age groups throughout the Green Chain, including; walking, cycling, horse riding, visiting local beauty spots, etc. A quarterly calendar tells you about organised events and activities taking place on the Green Chain - a godsend for busy parents. Get into the action with a Green Chain Healthy Walk. All walks are led by a trained volunteer to help whether you are a complete beginner or just wanting to get back to a healthier lifestyle. Tailored to a level that suits your needs and ability, you might choose a healthy walk for lots of reasons. Maybe to improve your health, enjoy the natural environment or just to meet friends for a chat. Each of the five Green Chain boroughs: Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, Lewisham and Southwark have a dedicated Healthy Walks Co-ordinator who can keep you informed.
Nordic Walking is a terrific way to take an average daily walk to the next level. Walking “with attitude” gets you moving without the joint pounding often associated with higher intensity exercise. Poles protect your knees, ankles, hips, and spine as they reduce the stress on them, especially on downhill. Anyone who enjoys the outdoors will feel the benefits. Kids leap and hop, while adults can improve performance; hiking with poles is a skill that will keep you moving and enjoying the outdoors at any age. De-clutter!
We all seem to hoard things, especially after Christmas, but as it’s the New Year - new start, let’s be brutally honest, if you don’t need it or want it anymore then it goes...
Starting with the living room: with too much furniture, even the most spacious living room can feel like a furniture showroom, making it hard to walk through the room. Ease congestion by sticking to the basics: a sofa, a comfy chair, an end table, coffee table and bookshelf. Arrange in a way that there is a clear unimpeded traffic flow. Piles of magazines: be ruthless and save only the last two issues. Cut out any interesting articles and keep in a binder to refer to later. Remember the coffee table should be just that and aim to keep 75% of it clear. Styles with shelves or drawers below the surface are handy places to store TV remotes and chargers. Smaller items like vases and candles can be corralled on a tray, ready to lift off to make space when guests arrive. Keep the number of cushions under control and an ottoman can provide storage for blankets and faux fur covers as well as providing extra seating. Having too many rugs across a floor can visually chop up a room; layer a statement rug over carpeting or wooden flooring.
Even ardent book fans can learn to de-clutter with streamlining strategies. Be selective, you don’t want to hang on to every book you have ever read, just those that have had an impact on your life. Bookshelves also seem to be a magnet for other objects, there is a rule of three to help restrict the number of items per shelf. Their sizes and shapes can vary, but relate the pieces by colour or theme but no more than three per shelf. If you have children its hard not to have clutter but encourage neatness and keep kid’s playthings in baskets on low shelves and make a game of putting the toys away at the end of play, return the room to an adult environment for the evening. Kitchens are so easy to clutter as we are gadget mad and probably had a few latest kitchen aids as stocking fillers. Large drawers can swallow them up, so organise items within the drawers or you’ll never see them again. Bulky pots and pans can quickly gobble up valuable cabinet space so put them on display with either hooks or shelves. Have a purge on plastic containers and if there isn’t a lid, it’s of no use. If the
kick space below your units is high enough, obtain a quote for storage drawers and utilise the empty space. Hallways can become a dumping ground for coats, countless pairs of shoes and bags, let alone junk mail. Keep to the rule of just one coat, outdoor shoes and school /work bag. Subject every piece of paper that comes into the house to the ‘two Fs’ test: if you can’t file it (bills, bank statements) or frame it (kid’s artwork) bin or shred it. Bathroom cabinets tend to be like Dr. Who’s tardis and be crammed full of beauty products galore. Time to rationalise and throw out anything that is almost empty, make space for the new toiletries from Christmas. And if the towel collection is out of control, remove any of the old faded ones to the rag bin. Finally the bedroom and if your wardrobe door won’t stay closed then its time to sort into seasons and bag up summer items for the loft and anything that no longer fits or you wouldn’t be seen in again, send off to the local charity shop for a good cause. Job done, you’re ready to face the New Year with a uncluttered home.

Be Inspired by Denim Drift. Dulux’s Colour of the Year 2017 A shade of grey-blue is timeless and versatile. Ream helps you discover ways to work with 2017’s new colour.
Denim Drift is a soft, diverse foundation for 2017’s trend palettes and underlines the theme of “life in a new light”. Representing the times we live in with different textures and materials to stand out and take centre stage. 10 tonal colour palettes have been developed featuring a spectrum of blues and tones to complement Denim Drift. Ways to work with Denim Drift in your home... Two tone: Dennis, Ream’s Kitchen Designer in New Eltham says: “The versatility of Denim Drift is everywhere. In the kitchen, utilising deep rich blues on the base cabinets or central island offers a statement piece. Dennis adds, “warm the grey-blue colours up with soft browns from rustic timber and natural earthy colours too. Future Plans An overview of the transport changes taking place, and the benefits and impact they’ll have on the local area
ME R IDIA N LIFEST YLE
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, outlined his commitment to providing greener and more public transport-focused river crossings in the east and south east of London; with a package of new river crossings to be built in the next 5-10 years that will vastly improve travel across the capital, while supporting new affordable homes and business opportunities in the area. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “It’s no secret that London has long needed more river crossings in the east. With new homes and economic growth across east London, it becomes even more important that we deliver new greener transport links that allow Londoners to cross the river quickly and more easily. “But we don’t want these to have a damaging impact on our environment, and that’s why I’ve reviewed and improved plans for Silvertown Tunnel and why I’m pushing forward with crossings that encourage public transport, walking and cycling.” These include: A series of enhancements to be made to the proposals for Silvertown Tunnel to make it greener and more public transport-focused, and exploring further benefits for local residents who use the tunnel. A DLR crossing between Thamesmead and Gallions Reach, helping support the development of around 17,000 new homes across Newham and the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
Silvertown Tunnel Scheme The latest update on the progress of the controversial Silvertown Tunnel: the six-month public examination of the Silvertown Tunnel scheme, which will be finished no later than 11 April 2017, will then be passed to the Planning Inspectorate, who will have three months to make a recommendation to the Secretary of State for Transport. Thereafter, The Secretary of State would then have three months to decide whether or not to grant the application that was filed in April last year by TfL, to build the Silvertown Tunnel. With approval, the earliest the Silvertown Tunnel could become operational is in 2022/23.
Regeneration in Abbey Wood Crossrail is helping to transform Abbey Wood, as the prospect of significantly better transport links attracts new businesses and investment in the area. The railway line and the Harrow Manor Way flyover currently dominate the local environment, dividing Abbey Wood and making it difficult for pedestrians to get around the area. The new Crossrail station and the urban realm enhancements will lead to significant improvements and make it much easier for local people to get from one side of the railway to the other. A new Sainsbury’s supermarket has opened and planning permission has been granted for 220 new homes and a new library and public square close to the station.
The new tunnel would: Reduce the impact of unplanned incidents at the Blackwall Tunnel by providing a nearby alternative route.
In addition, Peabody is building 1,500 new homes as well as new retail units and open spaces, linking the south Thamesmead estate with Abbey Wood station. The new railway will halve journey times to many central London destinations.
Cut down on queuing at the Blackwall Tunnel and approach roads.
www.crossrail.co.uk
Include user charging at the Blackwall and Silvertown Tunnels to manage demand and provide a source of revenue to help build and maintain the new tunnel. Provide an opportunity to create new cross-river bus links in east London. Improve road connections to and from Docklands and east London from south London. Improve journey times and make travel, deliveries and servicing more reliable. The ‘No to Silvertown’ campaign has highlighted public concerns dealing with the charging plan for use of the tunnels, unclear modelled scenarios produced by TfL, monitoring and mitigation, plus the local impact.

London City Airport was given planning permission last summer for the expansion of the terminal, which will increase annual capacity to 6.5 million passengers. The expansion plans come as part of the City Airport Development Programme: a £344 million project to enhance the airport to cater for increasing passenger traffic. Plans are in place to build seven new aircraft stands and a parallel taxiway, and also to extend the passenger terminal. The expansion will allow for an extra 32,000 flights from the airport by 2025. Airlines will also have more opportunities for long-haul flights to destinations such as the Middle East or the east coast of the United States. Expansion at London City Airport will create more than 2,000 new jobs in east London, add muchneeded aviation capacity in the South East, and generate an additional £750m per year for the UK economy. www.londoncityairport.com Aircraft Noise Campaign for noise levels at City Airport www.hacaneast.org.uk

The Soft Option
Banish hard water and say hello to big savings… and an easier, healthier life
Your stunning designer bathroom and kitchen will look amazing only for as long as it takes for the effects of hard water to show. The glass shower enclosure becomes dull, the showerhead clogs and the stainless steel u its lose their shine. All this leads to hours of extra cleaning with harsh chemicals in an effort to recapture the original look. Hard water, so called because of the quantities of dissolved minerals it contains, is ubiquitous in London and the south east and gives rise to a number of problems – from unsightly watermarks to unseen damage to domestic appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, irons and kettles. Hard water can also affect our hair and skin: when we wash, it leaves a residue that eads to dull, lifeless and unmanageable hair and can exacerbate skin conditions such as eczema. When hard water is heated, dissolved calcium and magnesium forms scale in pipes, which in addition to narrowing and potentially clogging the pipes, prevents efficient heat transfer. A water heater with just 6mm of scale will increase the cost of water heating by 50%.
A Twin Tec S3 water softener rids your hard water of unwanted minerals ad unpleasant side effects. And unlike other home improvements, the savings provided by a water softener mean that it can pay for itself within two to four years.
How is hard water softened?
The Twin Tec S3 water softener removes dissolved minerals by passing water through millions of resin beads. The minerals are attracted to the resin and are left behind when the water passes through the system, coming out completely free of ‘hardness’. The resin is then washed clean by a ‘regeneration’ process whereby a brine solution is passed through it, flushing the hard minerals to the drain and leaving the resign refreshes and ready to attract more hard minerals.
The Twin Tec S3 is capable of handling the needs of up to ten people.
Where can I locate the water softener?
A cupboard below the kitchen sink is the most common site for placing the Twin Tec S3 water softener; here it can be easily attached to the incoming mains water pipe. All the water coming into the house goes through the water softener before continuing through to the rest of the house. As the system needs to drain, the unit can share the same drain as the sink. An overflow outlet is required for safety reasons and the sink drain can also be used for this. If using the kitchen is inconvenient for any reason, the Twin Tec S3 can just as easily be positioned in a garage, or outside in a discreet waterproofed enclosure.
Why choose a Twin Tec S3 water Does softened water taste salty? softener? No, salt is not added to the water. The salt is The Twin Tec S3 is a non-electrical water operated system. The obvious difference between an ordinary softener and the Twin Tec S3 is that the Twin Tec S3 has two cylinders rather than one. This makes the regeneration process much more efficient. The Twin Tec S3 uses the flow of water to operate the control module, which manages fluctuations in water demand in the household. There is no need for an electrical supply, or a programming system or, indeed, any maintenance – other than keeping it topped up with blocks of salt. The quantity of salt you need depends on the level of your water usage.
used to create a brine solution and flush the resin through to get rid of the hard minerals that have been removed from the water. It does, however make sense to retain a drinking water pipe before it reaches the water softener. With a softener and a hard water mains tap you have the best of all possible options.

Spa Day or Spa Break Just pamper yourself, you deserve it‌ ...With a chance to win a spa day for two.
ME R IDIA N HEALT H & BEAUTY We all know that treating ourselves now and again makes us feel good. With the stress of day-to-day life taking its toll, sometimes all we need is a bit of me time.
19
MyDetoxDiet opens UK’s juice bar and spa in Blackheath
In our busy lives we often find it difficult to carve out the time to actually treat ourselves, and looking after ourselves usually slips to the bottom of our list of priorities. In case you need more persuasion, here are the top reasons to pamper yourself with a spa break, or even just one treatment: A massage improves blood circulation and can also provide pain therapy for chronic conditions such as back or neck pain. Spa treatments can also reduce stress that presents itself through anxiety and emotional distress. Massages can reduce blood pressure, increase alertness, and improve sleep. Spa therapies aid in increasing your body’s immunity, and as our body ages its ability to fight illness reduces. As the skin is the largest human organ, spa treatments can provide excellent detoxifying benefits. Therapies which promote sweating help the body rid itself of toxins, making it perfect for a New Year detox after too many glasses of Prosecco. Speaking of over indulgence, the festive season can cause chaotic skin reactions. A facial is the perfect way to wash away the evidence. Facial therapies leave your skin glowing and youthful, and you’ll feel instant happiness with the result. Body wraps: The way to look and feel slimmer. Body wraps are a staple at spas, and are considered an effective, all-natural way to enhance and moisten your skin, making it look softer. Wraps are designed to improve the texture and appearance of the skin by helping to rid the body of excess fluids and toxins. Benefits of body wraps may include detoxification, boosting of the lymphatic system and metabolism, body contouring, temporary inch-loss, skin tightening, and skin softening. Benefits of exfoliation: While regular skin cleansing is clearly beneficial, exfoliating on a regular basis - once or twice a week for mild exfoliation, once or twice a month for more intense treatments - can improve the results of your skin care routine and help rejuvenate your skin. Whether you have dry, normal, oily or sensitive skin, exfoliation can bring new life to your complexion.

COMMUNITY CAT CHAMPIONS: Use your people skills and powers of persuasion to help spread the word about neutering, and encourage cat owners to take up our offer of free neutering and microchipping. SHOP ASSISTANT: We raise funds for our cat care through our lovely charity shop at 18 Old Dover Road, SE3 7BT. We employ two shop managers, but rely on volunteers to make up the rest of the workforce needed to keep our busy shop running smoothly. Volunteering in our shop not only helps us to raise vital cash, it’s also a great way to meet people and make new friends. Full support and training is provided for all our volunteers, and we also hold regular social events.
Here are just a few of the ways in which you can help... FOSTERING: We urgently need people who are willing to care for a cat (or cats) in their own home while the cats are waiting for adoption – all expenses are paid by us.
If you’re interested in any of the above roles, or would like to discover other ways to help our local cats, pop along to Charlton House on Saturday 4 February to find our more – it would be great to see you there.

For the last few months, Meridian publisher Joy Johnston and Meridian writer Lucy Husband, have teamed up to create a brand new school magazine for the school in Bexleyheath where Lucy works – Upland Primary. The school decided to start the magazine to give the children an opportunity to write for a purpose, instead of just as an exercise in a book, and the children have relished the challenge. The first issue of Upzine was published this month with the help, support and sponsorship of Meridian magazine and the children hope to publish a magazine independently every half term. This would not have been possible were it not for the help of Meridian.

DINN FOR T ER WO
Al Pancino’s Restaurant
There’s something quite special about a privately run restaurant in a sea of sameness that are high street restaurants today. Aqua Bromley is one of those special places, as I found out when I went for a meal there and met the owner, Dasos. Dasos runs Aqua Bromley, as well as Aqua Croydon, Blackheath and Petts Wood. I asked him how he got started in the restaurant business and he told me a charming story of how it was all down to a woman with a white parrot on her shoulder. He went on to explain that he never chose the restaurants, but that they, ‘chose him’. Could this be the reason why his businesses are successful, I wondered? But, continuing to talk to him, it was obvious that it was down to a lot more than gut instinct. Dasos has designed all the interiors of his restaurants. Bromley, Croydon and Blackheath all share the same kind of muted, sophisticated interior but Dasos has taken a bold step with his new restaurant in Petts Wood. It is colourful, bright, sophisticated with a beautiful outdoor terrace – fantastic in the summer. All his restaurants have a similar menu, but they are changed regularly to reflect the season and the individual styles of the chefs.
All Aqua restaurants have set menus and half price steaks on a Monday. The food is consistently attractive and delicious. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, are the staff at Aqua. Many have been with Dasos for a long time – allowing customers to build up a rapport and trust with them, to the point that regular diners request the same waiters every visit. All this then, as well as the fantastic personality of Dasos himself, is infused throughout the Aqua restaurants, and is why a visit to them is a must if you truly Love Local. Children from Upland Primary School took part in the recent restaurant review competition, run by Meridian in partnership with Intu Bromley. This competition asked children to write their own restaurant reviews for Project Pie, Byron, Ed’s Diner, Giraffe or Wagamama. The lucky winner of a £100 Intu voucher was Year 6 student, Evie Pearson.
Ed’s Diner
In the half term I went to Ed’s Diner with four of my family members. I ate a kids ‘puppy dog’, with an Oreo milkshake, which was heavenly! The whole restaurant was made to look like an American diner, with mini duke boxes on the table. The service of the restaurant was very fast and we had eaten within the hour. The price was not too expensive and would be good for anyone on a budget. Overall, I would go to this restaurant again on a regular basis. I rate this restaurant a 4.5 out of 5, it is amazing!” By Evie Pearson, Year 6 Saturn, Upland Primary School

HI-TECH THEATRE TELLS A HUMAN STORY BY JAMES HADDRELL, ARTISTIC & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GREENWICH THEATRE At the end of this month, Greenwich Theatre is set to welcome a truly unique theatrical production: a show performed by three actors and a state-of-theart robot. SPILLIKIN (A LOVE STORY), brought to Greenwich by Pipeline Theatre, tells a story that begins in the 1970s with the romance between pop-music loving Sally and robotics fan Raymond. As is so often the case, opposites attract. The couple fall in love and enjoy a long but childless marriage until Sally’s Alzheimer’s takes hold, and Raymond’s progressive motor neurone disease overcomes him and he dies. However, before Raymond dies he creates a robot and uploads his memories to it to provide Sally with some company when he’s gone. The play cuts between the young couple’s life together and Sally’s subsequent relationship with the robot, a companion capable of patience in a way that few people could be, and an endless source of memories. When I am programming a new season I always look for theatre that crosses boundaries, that looks for new ways to tell a story. At the same time I have always been a fan of science fiction, but only when it tells a human story, where the predicted developments in science create a fresh context for a story about people’s relationships, the challenges they face and the dreams they have.
Dementia in its many forms must surely be one of the most frightening challenges facing our society, as medical science gets better at tackling other physical conditions and our life expectancy increases. Like any major social phenomenon, dementia is now increasingly scrutinised by the arts. The huge success of books like Elizabeth Is Missing or films like the Oscar-winning Still Alice, prove our ability to empathise with and our desperation to understand conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. With the same astonishing success, Pipeline Theatre have used theatre and a science fiction context to explore what it means to live with Alzheimer’s, the things you lose, and to propose a possible way to retain some of those memories and experiences. The robot in the show may be state-of-the-art now, but this production invites us to imagine that this kind of companionship may not be far away. As in all of the best science fiction, whether that is a good or a bad thing is left up to us to decide. Spillikin plays at Greenwich Theatre from 26-28 January Box Office 020 8858 7755; www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk All performances are followed by a free Q&A with members of the company, and a chance to meet and find out more about the robot in the show.

Pop Up Exhibition Peter Kent: A Retrospective
Painter, draughtsman, chronicler, river-watcher, and local institution: for over 50 years, Peter Kent, from his riverside studio, has drawn and painted the landmarks and the changes that make our environment. He is particularly synonymous with the River Thames and Greenwich: where the presence of history and the pace of change are the equal of anywhere in London.
formidable technique have led him to be compared to Paul Hogarth and Hugh Casson, but he is very much his own man: “Life is about people and places,” he says, “and I happen to love both.”
The exhibition runs from 7 - 30 January.
This long-awaited retrospective is a fitting tribute to an artist who, at 83, is always looking forward and as productive as ever.

Redevelopment of the Covered Market at Woolwich
Spray Street A contract to acquire the old covered market on Woolwich’s Plumstead Road, in south east London, part of a major regeneration plan for the area, has just been signed by St. Modwen, Notting Hill Housing and the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Redevelopment of the market is central to the £200m plans for the mixed-use regeneration of the area around Spray Street, in the town centre. The proposal includes approximately 600 new homes alongside a cinema, shops, restaurants and business space. St. Modwen and Notting Hill Housing have also signed contracts to form the Spray Street Quarter Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), a 50:50 joint venture to deliver the project. The new Spray Street Quarter project forms an important part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s regeneration masterplan to enhance the centre of Woolwich, helping to contribute towards its future as a new metropolitan town centre, with a vibrant mix of residential, leisure and employment uses. 35 per cent of the homes planned for the new site will be affordable, with the remaining housing built for private sale or built for the private rented sector (PRS). Woolwich is a major transport hub, and the Spray Street Quarter development sits directly across from the new Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) station that will open in Woolwich in 2018, bringing faster transport connections to Woolwich from the City, West End, Docklands and beyond. The site
also sits between Woolwich’s existing DLR and National Rail stations and is well-served by bus connections. The development will also open up new pedestrian routes and create new areas of public realm. The partners will work to assemble the remainder of the site through commercial agreements. A Compulsory Purchase Order Indemnity Agreement has also been entered into with the Royal Borough of Greenwich should the partners be unable to acquire the necessary land through private treaty negotiation. Tim Seddon, Regional Director for London and the South East at St. Modwen, said that the partners would now work up their detailed plans for the development: “With excellent connections to central London, our proposals are set to meet local and London-wide demand for homes around key transport hubs. The leisure and associated uses will make Spray Street Quarter an exciting new destination within Woolwich, complementing the extensive and successful regeneration that is already underway at the Royal Arsenal. “With these agreements now in place we are working up detailed proposals for a second public consultation, prior to submitting a planning application during the summer of 2017.” The Royal Borough of Greenwich first selected the partners as preferred bidders for the project in
2014, on the strength of St. Modwen’s track record as the UK’s leading regeneration specialist and Notting Hill Housing’s position as one of London’s leading affordable housing providers. John Hughes, Group Development Director at Notting Hill Housing, added: “The contract signing marks a key milestone for the regeneration of the Spray Street Quarter and the ongoing revitalisation of Woolwich town centre. Following our initial public consultation earlier in the year, Notting Hill Housing now looks forward to the next stage of local engagement to shape the area into a vibrant new place to live, shop and spend time.” Councillor Denise Hyland, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “The Council has a long-held vision for Woolwich to become a thriving metropolitan town centre where people can live, work and enjoy themselves. The Royal Borough is open for business and this announcement demonstrates that investors and developers share our aspirations to create great places where people want to live and work. Woolwich is undergoing significant transformation with lots of new developments such as the Royal Arsenal, Thomas Street and the regeneration of the former Connaught Estate. Spray Street, together with the opening of the Elizabeth Line, will further bolster the area’s growing reputation.”
