Blackheath Royal Standard

LOVE LOCA L

Blackheath Royal Standard is a hidden gem with a real sense of local community. And equidistant between Blackheath Village, Charlton and Greenwich. The Westcombe Park area is a mix of established period family housing and conversion flats with excellent transports links into the city and docklands. Some parts are within the catchment area of very sought after schools, making it a popular place to live for families. Westcombe Park borders Greenwich Park and Blackheath Common, creating a leafy suburb often described as an ‘oasis’ within London. Westcombe Park is also home to local community centre Mycenae House: the focus of over 60 local societies; ranging from jazz to judo - bridge to yoga. Blackheath Royal Standard is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxed shopping experience, with independent shops, boutiques, cafes, restaurants and cosy pubs.

This December, The Live Nativity - an annual event (Saturday 10 December, starts 3pm outside St John’s Church) involving all the community, with school children, shop-keepers, teachers and locals dressing up to ‘follow the star’ around Blackheath Standard, accompanied by a donkey and sheep from the local Woodland’s Farm - will take place. You can follow the live nativity as it moves around the local area, looking for an innkeeper at a local pub, and looking out for wise men, shepherds and a choir of angels on Old Dover Road. This year the event includes local craft and food stalls, along with mulled wine and other festive activities.

All Change at intu Shopping Centre, Bromley

LOVE LOCA L

Meridian asked intu’s Marketing Manager, Craig Higgins to explain the changes to come and how it might affect shoppers When will the centre change its brand name and what will it be? As the centre will no longer part of the intu group, the centre will need to change its name from intu Bromley. However, we understand from the buyer that they are intending to change the name back to ‘The Glades’. The American company, Alaska Permanent Fund Corp, has bought 85%; who will own the other 15%? Bromley council own 15% of the centre and as such we are currently consulting them in order to gain their consent. Will it alter the rights of customers that have bought or are thinking of buying gift cards or have signed up to the intu credit card? No, cards will continue to be valid up to one year from the original date of purchase. Of course, we have 14 centres other across the UK where you can also use your intu gift card, including: intu Lakeside, intu Uxbridge and intu Watford. Under the ownership of intu, the centre has undergone several new developments including the new restaurant terrace. Will projects like the new cinema still go ahead? That’s a question APFC is best placed to answer. intu Bromley is a great retail destination and whatever their plans for the future may be, they have a fantastic base from which to build.

Cancer Ward to Remain Open

M&S Returns to Woolwich

A decision has been taken to keep the Chartwell Ward open so it can continue its focus on inpatient cancer care at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH).

The new Foodhall will be situated in Cadet House on Plumstead Road and form part of the exciting Royal Arsenal Riverside development by Berkeley Homes.

Nick Moberly, Chief Executive of the Trust, said: “Over the past six months we have carried out an extensive clinical review of the PRUH’s cancer service. We are extremely grateful to staff and partner organisations who contributed to the review for their input.

The store is in the ideal location for local residents and commuters alike with the new Crossrail station set to open, just a stone’s throw away, in 2018. M&S Foodhall Woolwich has created more than 40 jobs, many of which have been filled by staff from the previous Woolwich store.

“We will continue to work closely with The Chartwell Cancer Trust - to whom we remain extremely grateful - to identify further improvements and enhance the care we provide to patients.”

Customers will also be able to enjoy a hot beverage and selection of delicious snacks and light meals in the new café.

All I want for Christmas is a new kitchen...start planning now

Over the Christmas period, the kitchen will see most of the festive action: from being the hub and gathering point for friends and family in the house, to the preparation and cooking of all the Christmas meals. By January, your kitchen may need a deep clean or a total refurbishment. Every home needs a kitchen to suit the family lifestyle...now might be the time to aim for the kitchen of your dreams. Over the past 20 years or so, kitchens started to become living spaces with more time spent in them, where more was done than just cooking. Newer homes were designed with kitchens as living spaces in mind and so these rooms became larger to better accommodate family and friends as an additional space for entertaining. Many kitchens began to open up to other rooms, yet some remained separate spaces. These newer, larger, more accommodating kitchens now had space for large tables, and islands were planned in to create a natural flow for those coming and going. Much more thought was being given to kitchen design and functionality. The idea of the kitchen as a living space was becoming more and more popular and those with smaller kitchens in older homes started

to take notice and enlarge their own kitchen spaces - following the trend both for lifestyle and resale purposes. Before you start planning a new kitchen, the first thing you need to decide is whether you want to update your current kitchen or start totally afresh. Look at what you already have, what you like and don’t like, and what you want to remove, move or keep. If the kitchen layout works, only change it if you can see it will bring a real benefit. Bear in mind that if you’re planning on moving, totally updating your kitchen might not add value; many buyers want to put their own stamp on a place and won’t want to change a new kitchen. In this case, making more superficial changes to refresh it might be best. Kitchen design ideas to bear in mind: If you want an entirely new kitchen, think about the layout and how you use your current kitchen. Ask yourself these questions: What elements do you want to be close together, such as the fridge and cooking station, so you don’t have to make too many trips around the kitchen?

Where will you want most worktop space, next to the hob and oven? How much storage do you need? Think about whether you need more than you currently have and what you need to store. Do you use your kitchen for dinner parties or do you have kids to accommodate? Do you therefore need space for a table or for someone to sit to talk to you while you cook? Where do you want to keep the utensils and dinnerware that you use most? Do you have a lot of gadgets, and will you want these out, so you can use them quickly, or stored away? As they say - the devil’s in the detail, but with forethought and planning you will have your perfect new kitchen in the New Year.

To Airbnb or not to Airbnb Louise Bate gives some sound advice to the would be landlord The rise in popularity of websites such as Airbnb is sweeping the globe, allowing the ordinary man or woman to let out his or her spare room on a short term basis for some extra income. Whilst this might be seen as a step forward in the “sharing economy” in which we now live, others believe there are negative effects on our society. One concern, for example, is that such websites are compounding the housing crisis by making fewer homes available for affordable housing. Whilst lettings for no more than 90 days in any year are allowed without the need for planning permission, if you are thinking about letting out your home you will also need to comply with all legislation applicable to lettings of residential property including having gas and electrical safety certificates in place. You should also check your insurance policy as some contain exclusions for short term lettings. There are further points to consider depending on your interest in the property: 1. Freeholder – As a freeholder, you should check whether there are any covenants in your title deeds that restrict short term lettings. If you have a mortgage,

you need to check whether your lender allows short term lettings. It might be that you will need your lender’s consent. Buy-to-let mortgages will usually require that any tenancy is granted for no less than six months by way of an assured shorthold tenancy.

?

2. Leaseholder – In addition to checking whether there are any covenants preventing short term lettings and whether such lettings are permitted under your mortgage, you need to check your lease. Leases will often prohibit you from letting part of your property and there might be a restriction on the permitted use of the property. In a recent case the lease only allowed the property to be used as a ‘private residence’ and the tribunal ruled that this clause of the lease had been breached because the short term letting amounted to a ‘business use’ and not a ‘private residence’. 3. Tenant under a tenancy agreement – Generally, most assured shorthold tenancy agreements will prohibit the subletting of the whole or any part of the property without the prior written consent of the landlord. Breaching this would leave the landlord open to seeking possession of the property.

Whatever your views are, be sure to consider the legal issues before letting out your home. To find out more, please contact Louise Bate at Beverley Morris & Co. on 020 8852 4433.

The importance of regular vet check-ups for your dog Ideally, your vet should see your dog at least once a year, and more frequently as they get older or if they have special medical needs. These regular visits play a huge part in the ‘prevention is better than cure’ approach; so don’t hold off making the appointment just because your dog seems fit and healthy to you. Your vet will check your dog over, including listening to their heart and lungs, running their hands over their abdomen to check for any unusual signs, checking for skin/coat, eye and ear problems and scanning their microchip to see if it’s all in working order. Another advantage of these annual check-ups is to get your dog used to visiting the vet surgery when they’re well. If they only visit when they’re hurt or ill they can become nervous about seeing the vet, associating their trips with bad times or stressful experiences. It’s a good idea to pop into the vet practice every so often, even if you don’t have an appointment. The receptionists and vet nurses will always appreciate a cuddle and it will create a positive memory for your furry friend. Your vet should send you a reminder when your dog’s vaccinations are due or provide you with a puppy vaccination schedule to help you keep up-todate. The timing will depend on which vaccination is needed but could include: distemper, leptospirosis,

adenovirus, parvovirus as well as parainfluenza and Bordetella (kennel cough). If you’re planning to take your dog abroad, you will also need a rabies vaccination as part of the ‘Pet Passport’ scheme. Another situation where prevention is better than cure is the control of fleas, ticks and worms. Remember that fleas, or at least their larvae, can live year-round in your home and garden, and ticks can transmit nasty diseases. Your vet can advise you on flea and tick prevention as well as how you can avoid tape and roundworm and, if necessary, lungworm. When you’re thinking about how to look after your dog, one of the main things you need to consider is neutering. If you’ve taken on an adult dog there’s a good chance that they will have been neutered already but if you’ve got a puppy or an un-neutered older dog, your vet can tell you about the health

It’s a Dog’s Life Winner

benefits of neutering and give you all the information you need on aftercare (including diet) to keep your dog as healthy and happy as possible. Sadly, obesity is an all-too common problem in dogs, so if your dog is overweight, there’s plenty you can do to help. For example, talk to your vet about a diet and exercise plan or find out if your veterinary practice runs a weight loss scheme. Equally, you don’t want your dog to be underweight so, if your dog has lost weight since they were last weighed, discuss this with your vet, as it could be a sign of a health problem. With regular check-ups and their usual dose of TLC from you, your dog should live a fulfilling long life with you.

Dogs are considered to be ‘man’s best friends’. After all, they are loyal companion animals: they love you unconditionally, always want your company, are always excited to see your face, will follow your every word dutifully and lovingly, and never desert you. From the overwhelming number of images of your dogs sent in its obvious that we love our dogs as much, if not more, than they do us.

Sticking with the Classic Look Which designs become classic? Meridian takes a look at classic fashion, its influences and nail down styles that never go out of fashion like the LBD. Maybe everyone is wearing it, but it doesn’t mean you have to wear it too. “No elegant woman follows fashion slavishly.” A quote by Christian Dior that quite rightly means think before you buy. You have to consider your age, your body, your lifestyle, personality amongst other things. Just because it looks good on a model or in a magazine, it doesn’t mean it looks good on you. The basic principles of achieving a beautiful, elegant look that is timeless are quite simple: stick to simple clean lines and focus on quality. We asked Suzanne Swords of Devernois, Blackheath to explain timeless classics. A classic look never dates and Devernois, with over 90 years of experience, know exactly how to create that look. Established and run by the same French family since the early 1920’s; Devernois have literally been at the cutting-edge of feminine fashion - using their skill to create modern, sensuous and timeless classics. Worn by Brigitte Bardot, Linda Evangelista; photographed by the likes of Gilles Simon and Andre Carra - Devernois is classically French; timeless and elegant. En Devernois, je suis moi (in Devernois, I am me) is surely one of the best corporate branding slogan’s of all time and permeates their collections. By combining sophisticated and fashionable fabrics with the latest technology, and human skills and knowledge that have been handed down over several generations, Devernois consistently create garments that fall perfectly, are comfortable to wear and able to withstand the tests of time and the rigours of modern women’s busy lives. We call them timeless classics. As part of your wardrobe they never date and can be combined or worn separately; dressed up for that sophisticated function or, down with jeans for that cool yet elegant soiree with close friends. When you wear Devernois you are celebrating timeless French elegance, sophistication and know how, as they say - In Devernois, I am me.

Devernois

One timeless item in every woman’s wardrobe is the Little Black Dress. Fashion historians ascribe the origins of the classic little black dress to the 1920s designs of Coco Chanel and Jean Patou intended to be long-lasting, versatile, affordable, accessible to the widest market possible and in a neutral colour. Its ubiquity is such that it is often simply referred to as the ‘LBD’. Available from intu Bromley – Phase Eight Darena Lace Dress £130 Metalic leather shoes with block heel £110.

How to Prepare your Body for Winter

21

Salt Cave

SPECIAL OFFER

As the days close in, its important to know the foods you should eat to keep your body fighting fit

Throughout December: Special Offer - Buy One Get One Free: Mrs Janice J., from Dartford, has suffered from severe asthma for many years, relying heavily on steroid medicines, inhalers, etc. In the last year she has had a few severe asthma attacks, which required calling an emergency ambulance. The last asthma attack left her in a coma for several days.

As the seasons change, there are always nutritional considerations to bear in mind. Our bodies become susceptible to deficiencies in winter. Certain nutrients become scarce, and our eating patterns can change in favour of stodge and comfort food. A little attention in a few key areas is needed to keep your body on the right track and help it fight off winter’s barrage of attacks by infections and viruses. One of the big curses of the winter is the common cold. A healthy immune system will lower your chances of catching a cold. If you are unlucky enough to fall prey to its clutches, there are steps you can take to reduce its duration and severity. Whilst there remains much debate around the efficacy of vitamin C in this context, one nutrient that has shown to be very helpful is the mineral zinc, which is used by the white blood cells in our immune system to help attack dangerous pathogens. Men in particular tend to be low in zinc, as their bodies require much more than women to function properly. Make sure you keep your zinc intake at a healthy level and your body should be in a good state to combat illness over winter. Zinc is abundant in seafood, so one of my favourite ingredients to support immunity is prawns. Other shellfish are equally as rich. For the vegetarians, pumpkin seeds are a great source. Vitamin D A common winter deficiency for people living in Britain is vitamin D. The primary source of this for humans is sunlight, so once the days get shorter and the clouds get heavier, our vitamin D supplies tend to diminish. Vitamin D is one of the most important, under appreciated and overlooked nutrients our body’s need, so a deficiency can cause problems. The vitamin helps as assimilate calcium, which is good for our bones. Recent data have also revealed that it is needed to activate our T cells - the immune system’s killer cells. When levels get low, there are a few sure fire foods that you can call on. The first is full fat milk (shock horror). The fats in the milk are very rich in vitamin D (and also vitamin A). Another great source, and all round food hero, is oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, herrings etc. For those who wish to avoid meat and dairy, try upping your intake of mushrooms, as they can synthesise a form of vitamin D quite easily. Aim to take in one of these foods every day throughout the winter months and stay healthy.

She started salt therapy at Bexleyheath Salt Cave shortly after the last asthma attack. After a few sessions, she noticed improvements and since then she has been feeling much better. Her asthma is now under control and she has started doing daily activities again without feeling tired all the time. She is also using less and less medication. She is very happy with the salt therapy sessions, and says she is much more relaxed and feeling better all the time. www.saltcave.co.uk 020 8166 4100 Email: bh@saltcave.co.uk Salt Cave, 81/87 Avenue Road, Bexleyheath DA7 4EQ.

Refresh Your Soul

Blow away the cobwebs this Christmas. Tamsyn Clarke takes us for a winter walk… If you are looking to blow away the cobwebs this Christmas and make room for some Turkey Sandwiches on Boxing Day, we would like to suggest the Hawkwood Estate as a place to revitalise and refresh the soul. Hawkwood is a hidden gem in the handsome town of Chislehurst, at the very edge of the Commons behind Coopers School and down Botany Bay Lane. The estate is managed by the National Trust and takes in 230 acres of grazed pastures and small blocks of woodland. It borders the more famous Petts Wood but this article is dedicated to the beautiful and surprising Hawkwood. The National Trust suggests two walks around the Estate, a “yellow” walk and a nearby “green” walk, which takes in Petts Wood as well. They can be done in isolation or together if you feel like a longer ramble. We set off on the yellow walk which is just 2.4 miles (we have young kids in tow!) and starts just off Botany Bay Lane, down a steep path opposite an open meadow. Within minutes of starting the walk, you feel you could be anywhere – this is proper rolling countryside yet so close to the urban sprawl. You can feel the grip of city life just slip away. At the bottom of the path, we turn left through the woodlands and around a beautiful, almost hidden pond. It is really still, mystical and somewhat eerie in winter.

Once past the pond, there is a little more woodland before you turn left to take in a gentle flat path alongside ‘Kyd Brook’ – a shallow but active brook, which in winter is ideal for strolling through in wellies if you are brave enough! My three year old was ready to jump in, we will definitely be bringing wellies next time! We see many families enjoying this lovely brook with their dogs dashing through the water with gusto. This is clearly fantastic dog walking country. We’ve also heard that Kingfishers can sometimes be spotted at Pond Wood or along the brook. Definitely one to keep an eye out for! Near Tong Farm, we pause for a short picnic at the low bridge and then we follow the footpath along the railway. This is probably the least picturesque part but the kids love chasing the trains and pause at the railway bridge to see the trains chug past. From the bridge, there is a steep path into Edlmann Wood (part of Petts Wood), through further farmland and yet another pond - Flushers Pond. The children have just enough energy to stroll back towards Chislehurst Common and we trudge to the Crown pub overlooking the Common to enjoy a quick beverage whilst the children play in the courtyard garden. All in, this is a lovely afternoon stroll.

It is the contrast on this walk that sets it apart. From the sweeping meadows to dense woodland, views across working farmland and the gentle stroll along a babbling brook. And all just 13 mile from central London – that’s the real surprise. To enjoy the yellow walk, please visit the National Trust website for more information and their comprehensive map:

Ms White encouraged students to “aim high, be ambitious and have dreams.” Adding that this must be reinforced with lots of hard work, resilience and determination. She also advised the girls to seize every opportunity to gain work experience and network in order to break into their chosen profession.

Charlene spoke passionately about her journey to success in the highly competitive industry of journalism and broadcasting. She told of her experiences growing up in south east London accompanying her mother to local markets and living in a modest household where her parents had three jobs between them to fund her education at Blackheath High School. She recalled honestly how she has had to confront racism and sexism throughout her life and how this has made her stronger, stating that she is: “proud of all experiences because they made me who I am today.”

The school’s theatre was full of students completely enthralled by Ms White’s absorbing and amusing lecture. Sixth Form Student, Ketsia Mukobo, said: “There are not many times in a teenager’s life when they feel moved and transformed by a lecture but this enriching experience truly broadened my vision and mind- set. Alongside everyone else, I was positively affected by her integrity and I know that many students, particularly those who were able to speak to her after the lecture, were greatly inspired.” www.blackheathhighschool.gdst.net

King’s Rochester Celebrates Winning Success in BBC Radio 2 Young Choristers of the Year 2016 King’s Rochester school is celebrating the outstanding success of two pupils in the final of BBC Radio 2 Young Choristers of the Year 2016, broadcast on Wednesday 26th October on Radio 2, with Edward Hyde being crowned this year’s winner. Edward Hyde and Rupert Walker were two of only four finalists in the boys’ category, amongst hundreds of entrants in this national competition, after passing through two highly competitive judging rounds. To have two of the finalists from one choir was exceptional and this was the first year this has happened. Edward is currently Deputy Head Chorister of Rochester Cathedral Choir and Rupert was Head Chorister last year. The choristers of Rochester Cathedral are educated at King’s Rochester Preparatory School, the oldest choir school in the world, and King’s is hugely proud of both boys. At the final, held in Manchester Cathedral, Rupert impressed the judges and audience with his excellent singing of the hymn, ‘I the Lord of Sea and Sky’ and the solo anthem from Handel’s Messiah ‘Come Unto Him’, receiving highly complimentary remarks for his performance.

Rupert Walker (left) and winner Edward Hyde (right) The star of the show though was Edward who sang ‘I Vow To Thee My Country’ and ‘Be Thou My Vision’ to the setting by world-renowned composer (and Chair of Judges) Bob Chilcott. Edward’s singing was outstanding and he showed himself to be the consummate professional in his responses to interview questions from the host, Diane-Louise Jordan. After he was announced as BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year 2016 he sang a duet with the winner of the girls’ competition in the company of special guest singers, The Priests. An exciting year lies ahead for Edward, who is also a member of Junior Academy at the Royal Academy of Music and the National Children’s Orchestras as well as being a Music Scholar at King’s Rochester. He thanked his singing coach, Mr Michael Jamieson-Smith and the Director of Music at Rochester Cathedral, Mr Scott Farrell, in his acceptance speech and clearly has a very bright future ahead!

Sir Colin Blakemore and Terry Waite in Conversation with Dr. Mary Baker It was a huge privilege to welcome Sir Colin Blakemore, Terry Waite and Dr Mary Baker to Bromley High recently. Dr Mary Baker described Sir Colin as the best neuroscientist in Europe. The University of Oxford’s Emeritus Professor of Neuroscience and London University’s Professor of Philosophy and Neuroscience duly demonstrated his passion for a subject on the frontiers of undiscovered science by speaking in a way, which was accessible even to those with no scientific background, elaborating on the concept of neuroplasticity. Terry Waite CBE discussed his work as a hostage negotiator and his experience as a hostage for five years in Beirut, much of which spent in solitary confinement in the dark. His role in establishing the charity Hostage UK in 2004 was an inspiring example of a humanitarian response to appalling personal adversity. A challenging, fascinating and utterly riveting insight into the human brain and a moving glimpse of the depths of the human spirit. www.bromleyhigh.gdst.net

Tower Tandoori

A positive jewel in Bermondsey that evokes a taste of India One of London’s oldest Indian restaurants, Tower Tandoori has occupied the same site on Tower Bridge Road since 1978 and is considered a local institution, a positive jewel in Bermondsey’s culinary crown. At the moment, anyone and everyone will know that Tower Bridge is closed to traffic until the end of December but don’t let that dissuade you from venturing out on a cold night to try one of the best Indian/tandoori restaurants I’ve eaten in for quite awhile.

Attentive staff showed us to our table and left us to peruse the menu, thankful it wasn’t over long. The style of food is authentic, without the modern day pretence, yet the chef has managed to combine new flavours that reinvigorate some of the traditional dishes. The menu reflects the cultural diversity of India, with influences from Parsi, Goan, Bengali, Nepalease and Gujarti.
My partner started with rhubarb prawns, which she said balanced beautifully, the slight tartness of the rhubarb bringing out the flavour of the lightly spiced prawns. I had Malai lamb chops. Quickly cooked in the tandoor, the four chops were deliciously tender and not over spiced with a thick yogurt coating.

I opted for the meat feast, tandoori mixed grill as a main. Mixed grills demonstrate the skills of the chef as the cooking timing must be right. Dark red prawns, with deep flavouring, soft and juicy with a crisp coat. Seekh kebab, a spiced minced lamb skewered sausage, really woke me up, I must have eaten hundreds in the past, but this one was beautiful and subtle. Three pieces of chicken tikka, soft juicy and crisp at the same time, better than any other, and just to remind me, another Malai lamb chop. Top marks. Most often with mixed grills, one or more of the items will be overcooked or dry, not here. I slowed down my eating to savour the sheer taste and quality. Classic chicken Chettinad was my partners

main course, chosen from the chef’s specialities. Described as a medium-hot, the chilli factor was just right and the tender chicken had been marinaded with coconut and turmeric. We shared Bombay aloo, peshwari nan (with coconut stuffing) and keema nan, and aromatic saffron pilau rice. Two Cobra lagers and we had plenty of bite. With papadoms and pickles - a very reasonable £78.00. Michael Breese See their advert for booking details www.towertandoori.co.uk 020 7237 2247. 74-76 Tower Bridge Road, London SE1 4TP.

“My family and I enjoy Carluccio’s because of our love of Italy and Italian food. I believe that my love of good food and new flavours has come from my family, also I have Type 1 diabetes which makes food an important part of my life.

“I enjoy trying new foods and discovering different restaurants! I like Giraffe because it’s a great place to eat as a family. Mum was happy feeding my baby brother there and there was a nappy changing room which was nice and clean.

To start with we ordered some Italian mixed olives, they were infused with herbs and a perfect appetiser before my meal. For my starter I ordered Ravioli Fritti which are crispy pasta parcels filled with smoked mozzarella served with a delicious, slightly spiced honey and mustard dressing. Then came my favourite course - my main, partly because it is the biggest serving! I had Beef Brasato, the meat was so succulent it melted in my mouth. This was also served with polenta and broccoli in a rich wine sauce, delicious! Finally, the chocolate bread and butter pudding is a must for dessert lovers like me and was the perfect way to end my meal.

For starters we shared nachos with chicken and halloumi skewers. I enjoyed the nachos although they could have been a bit bigger. I ordered the original beef burger with monterey jack cheese. It came with ‘skin on’ fries. It was delicious. I had a hot chocolate afterwards with lots of marshmallows. It was really creamy. My little brother James had the children’s menu including a burger and chocolate ice cream. He loved his burger! Mum had the passion fruit cheesecake for dessert, it was big and tasted amazing!

All the waiters were very friendly and attentive, the restaurant is spacious and the décor and lighting was moody and artistic. If like us you would like a slice of Italy on your doorstep, you can always rely on Carluccio’s and the one at intu Bromley is no exception. I am certainly looking forward to trying the Christmas menu! buon appetito.”

I love the theme of the restaurant animals and giraffes. The seats are colourful and there was grass on the wall which was cool. The menu is varied, something for everyone. The restaurant is spacious and the staff welcoming. It was very family friendly. My brother liked the colouring sheet and the word search.”

The Larder

For many, Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a cheese board. It’s a great way to finish off a meal, but its also wonderful on its own for parties or when neighbours pop round for a festive drink.

Bianco43, the Italian restaurant group specialising in traditional pizzas and wine, has been a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the City since it first opened in 2013 by Italian duo, Fabrizio Margarita and Massimo Parodi. Diners can enjoy the simplicities of an authentic Italian menu that embodies ingredients directly from specific regions of their homeland. All wines featured on the menu are authentic Italian blends carefully selected from various Italian wine regions and guaranteed to whet your palette. Amongst Greenwich, Bianco43 can also be found in other areas of London such as Trafalgar Square, Blackheath and the newly opened restaurant on South End in Croydon. www.bianco43.com

Their favoured Christmas cheeses include locally produced Blackwood’s Graceburn and from Europe Winner of ‘World’s Best Cheese 2016’, the Swiss Starnachas. Their wines are chosen from smaller, quality-focused growers and winemakers who aim to create a more individual and characterful product. TANGOWORKOUT This has been a major year for Greenwich Theatre. In the summer we closed for three months to work with the local authority on repairing the roof and rewiring the borough’s historic theatre, to start the long process of refurbishing the front of house areas of the building, and to create a new studio theatre. The launch of the studio was something I had been planning for years. Since the closure of Greenwich Playhouse the borough has lacked a flexible, intimate, professional theatre space. At the same time, our national profile as a home to some of the country’s most exciting emerging theatre companies means that Greenwich has attracted an ever growing number of high quality small shows that need a suitable theatre. This autumn we piloted the new studio with a trial programme of new shows and events, one of which was a public rehearsed reading of the new play, GAZING AT A DISTANT STAR. The audience’s reaction to the reading was so strong that we have decided to produce the show in full to launch the studio season in January. GAZING AT A DISTANT STAR is a play about people who go missing, but more importantly, the people who are left behind. It tells the story of Karen, whose son went on holiday and never came home; of Anna, whose sister disappeared from the school where she taught; and of Arun, whose best friend at work just stopped coming

in one day. Playwright Sian Rowland has written a play about what it feels like to have someone disappear from your life, often leaving no indication of where they’ve gone or why. After this moving premiere we welcome a host of incredibly talented companies all presenting small shows which have received fantastic reviews at festivals and small theatres and are now heading to Greenwich to appear in the new studio. Of course, at the same time, we are preparing for a major season in the main house as well, and one of the highlights is sure to be the UK premiere of the rock musical LIZZIE, transferring to Greenwich from a run in Denmark. Telling the story of Lizzie Borden, immortalised in the rhyme “Lizzie Borden took an axe, Gave her mother forty whacks…”, the show was first discovered in New York and we have been working for a year or more to prepare for this exciting premiere. In recent years the future of Greenwich Theatre has been repeatedly called into question, but we have reduced a huge inherited debt, have changed our business model to allow for cuts of as much as £500,000 per year in funding, and despite all that, have increased our artistic reputation, the number of shows we present, and the size of our audiences. The story of Greenwich Theatre’s recent past is one of success, and of the creation of firm foundations for a glowing future. www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk

Downsizers Find the perfect home in well-connected Woolwich

A home can be more than just a place to lay your head down in the evening. It can be your springboard allowing you to explore and venture out to different locations. For Keith and Anne Hunt, their new home at Royal Arsenal Riverside has opened up a new way of living, since deciding the couple needed to downsize from their three-bedroom property in Islington to a penthouse at Berkeley Homes’ development in Woolwich. Keith and Anne bought their property off-plan, something which they hadn’t done before: “We did a lot of research when deciding to move and were very impressed, not only by what was currently on the development but also by what would be coming in the future. There are not many places that have a train and DLR station within a couple minutes of the front door, or an on-site pier where you can catch the Thames Clipper boat into central London. “From our home we get a view of a beautiful sunset on a clear day and can even see the planes taking off from the City Airport across the

river which is a real sight. In fact the airport is something we were quite excited about as it will make our travels much easier when we look to go away and can get there within two stops on the DLR.” The couple wanted to be able to enjoy London’s attractions at their leisure and knowing that Crossrail would be opening on the development in 2018 was a huge draw for them. “The Woolwich Crossrail station played a significant part in deciding to move and we cannot wait for it to open. We like to go out to the theatre quite often and this service will dramatically cut our journey times and open up other areas of London.” Whilst central London offers a range of sights and entertainment options, Royal Arsenal Riverside itself is a great place to explore with an array of restaurants, bars and cafés, as well as the Greenwich Heritage Centre, which celebrates the rich history of the borough and the military past of the development. A regular Farmers Market takes place on the second and last Saturday of

the month, bringing the whole community together with a range of food and drink stalls and there are often live music performances. Living somewhere that has a real buzzing community was extremely important to the couple. Anne commented: “We can go for a meal in The Guardhouse or Dial Arch pub, have breakfast in the Cornerstone Café or even buy some groceries in Tesco or at the Farmers Market. It is also very convenient to have the O2 close by which has some great shows and a cinema.” Keith and Anne couldn’t be happier with their home and its riverside location: “Throughout the whole process Berkeley Homes were excellent in guiding us through what was happening and allowing us to imagine what our new home would look like. Those expectations have well and truly surpassed: the reality far exceeds what we thought we were going to get.” Find out more at: www.royalarsenalriverside.co.uk 0208 331 7130

New Riverside Collection Launched at Greenwich Millennium Village

The much-anticipated new phase of homes at Greenwich Millennium Village has recently be launched. Iverna Quay offers a stylish collection of contemporary apartments, maisonettes and überhaus™ exclusively situated behind the Greenwich Yacht Club with some apartments overlooking the River Thames. Ever since the first residents moved into GMV, as it is known, more than 15 years ago, the Greenwich Peninsula has been rapidly evolving into a vibrant village community, with plentiful green open spaces and an exciting range of new homes. With night tube services on the Jubilee Line, residents at GMV will benefit from 24-hour services to Canary Wharf, the City and across London, making living here even more convenient. Iverna Quay is a modern ten-storey building with a striking exterior that complements its waterside setting and the surrounding architecture of the rest of the development. To reflect the area’s nautical heritage, the name Iverna comes from the beached Thames sailing barge that was used as the original clubhouse for the Greenwich Yacht Club, when it was founded in 1908. The apartments look out over the sailing boats of the yacht club and many of the homes have riverside views. Chris Bladon, a Director of GMV Limited comments: “Greenwich Millennium Village has matured into a desirable neighbourhood with a reputation for high quality homes in a sustainable setting. Iverna

Quay will not only benefit from village living, but is also right on the banks of the River Thames. Given the success of earlier phases of the development we are expecting strong demand for the homes at Iverna Quay and perspective buyers are urged to enquire soon to avoid disappointment.” All homes at Iverna Quay have their own private outdoor space in the form of a balcony, some of which run the entire length of the property, while the ground floor maisonettes have an enclosed front garden. Interiors offer flexible, light-filled accommodation with open plan living spaces and full height glazing. The upper floor überhaus™ are split over two floors and enjoy sweeping river views. The überhauses offer spacious living accommodation and residents benefit from the services of an on-site concierge. The high quality interior specification includes individually designed contemporary style kitchens with stone grey gloss base and wall units, and a full range of quality integrated appliances. The chic contemporary décor features luxury tiled and oak flooring, while ample storage is incorporated with white oak fitted wardrobes in the master and some second bedrooms. A range of environmentally conscious features makes the homes highly energy efficient, such as the high performance communal heating system and superior levels of insulation. GMV is a joint venture development by Countryside and Taylor Wimpey, supported by the Mayor of

London and has been described as one of the most exciting and innovative residential neighbourhoods in Europe. An array of community facilities is on the doorstep, centred on a village square with shops, hairdressers, Ayurveda spa, nursery, and the ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rated Millennium Primary School. Residents at Greenwich Millennium Village can take advantage of a huge amount of green open space with landscaped courtyards, a 50-acre ecology park with two lakes and thriving wildlife, and a new eco play area. The world-famous O2 arena and all its leisure and entertainment attractions are just a short walk away. Greenwich Millennium Village is also conveniently located for transport links with North Greenwich underground station, just one stop from Canary Wharf on the Jubilee line, with the City and West End also within easy reach. For a more leisurely commute, the Thames Clippers ferry service departs from North Greenwich Pier, while the cable car line provides frequent connections to the Royal Docks. For travel further, afield London City Airport is a 10 minute journey via public transport. Prices at Iverna Quay start from £425,000 for a one bedroom apartment and £555,000 for a two bedroom apartment. For further information about Greenwich Millennium Village, visit www.gmv.london or call 020 8305 2712. The Marketing Suite and Show Apartment are open daily from 10am - 5pm.
