local N E W S A two-year joint venture between Bromley Council, The Froglife Trust and a local Friends Group to preserve the habitat of native amphibians has been successfully completed. A grant of £5,000 from The Veolia Environmental Trust, through the Landfill Communities Fund was awarded to the London Borough of Bromley. Bromley’s Ranger Service, the Friends of South Hill Wood and Kingswood Glen, and The Froglife Trust who then prepared the site so that an extensive programme of de-silting could commence. The woodland, listed as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC), has been home to five of the six native British amphibians, including the highly protected Great Crested Newt (pictured). The project’s completion means the ponds are now a safe and attractive habitat for wildlife, ensuring Bromley’s continued ecological diversity. For more information visit www.bromley.gov.uk

Park’s £550m transformation The Olympic Park, off limits since the end of the London 2012 Games, has reopened for short visits. So far 20,000 tickets have been sold to people wanting to see the site in Stratford, east London. The ‘Park in Progress’ tours will run at weekends and during school holidays until 23 June (visitors must wear hard-hats, as the venue is a construction site). The visit involves a bird’s-eye view from the ArcelorMittal Orbit tower (pictured) next to the Olympic Stadium. The site will reopen as the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, with housing, businesses, parks and venues for sporting, entertainment and community events. Trees and shrubs will make it a greener space ahead of the concerts and track events to help mark the anniversary of the Olympic Games on 27 July.

Local museums shortlisted for major award The Art Fund has announced the ten museums in the running for the UK’s largest arts prize, the £100,000 Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year. There are three London museums in the shortlist – the Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill; Dulwich Picture Gallery and the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow. The prize highlights the innovative and creative ways museums bring objects and collections to life, looking specifically at activity undertaken in 2012. As well as the £100,000 prize for Museum of the Year, the Art Fund will give one of the ten finalist museums £10,000 for the Clore Award for Learning, which recognises achievements in learning programmes for children and young people. Both winners will be drawn from the ten finalists in June.

Maryon Wilson Animal Park in Charlton recently saw its first major event since the takeover from Greenwich Council. Even before the event started there was a queue to join the Easter egg hunt, and it wasn’t long before hundreds of families and children were off enjoying the hunt and other activities. Children sat around on hay bales engrossed in fascinating animal tales from storyteller, Rich Sylvester (pictured left) while the resident deer paraded around their pen in the background. The animals in the care centre were out for visitors to pick up and cuddle and the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) opened their pen for the public to go in and meet the horses. Considering that it snowed twice during the event, Maryon Wilson Park has never been so busy. It was lovely to see local people and their families enjoying the park. Skate Jam in Kidbrooke More than 100 skaters, BMXers and scooters converged at the Skate Jam on the OneSpace youth and community centre in Kidbrooke recently to show off their skills on a specially constructed half pipe and the many grinds and ramps around OneSpace. Greenwich Mayor, Councillor David Grant presented 10-year-old Isaac Maxwell with a ‘best skate’ prize for showing amazing skill and technique on the half pipe. Prizes were also awarded for the BMX high-jump competition and best tricks on the grinds for both BMXers and skaters. The Skate Jam was organised by the Greenwich Skateboard Co-operative who are campaigning for a better skate park facilities in the Borough of Greenwich.

ART OF DRAINAGE

THE ART OF DRAINAGE WAS DELIGHTED to be involved in a recent episode of the popular DIY SOS TV programme. The feature involved the creation of a wet room for a local person who had been severely injured in a motorbike accident and had become housebound as a result. Stephanie Britnell, Business Development Director said: ‘When we were contacted, we jumped at the opportunity to assist and sent a team to site for a few days to carry out a complete installation of the drainage works. We felt very privileged to be able to give something back to our local community within the area in which we operate. We always enjoy working under pressure and managed to complete the works within the tight deadlines put on us and in terrible weather conditions’. Ian West, Director commented: ‘The team at the Art of Drainage were present at the showing to the house owners and it was a very humbling experience which we were delighted to be part of’. The show is out in the autumn but the Art of Drainage are available to deal with any drainage SOS 24/7! Contact us on 020 3322 5544 or visit www.artofdrainage.co.uk

Painting weather

by Valerie Breese

T

he ‘great’ British weather can be very demanding on the exteriors of our homes with long damp months of mist, fog and rain, not to mention the recent very cold winter. So what do weather and climate actually do to exterior walls? Common problems that occur on house exteriors can be loose, blown, cracked or hollow render, cracking Tyrolean render, loose and cracked pebble-dash, loose or missing pointing (mortar joints), spalled or defaced bricks or blocks, and loose and hollow stucco. Your home is under constant attack and all these issues can cause damp and water ingress. This penetrating damp allows water to soak into brickwork or substrate, and excessive blown render can make your home feel very cold inside. In extreme cases, if the loose or hollow render is not dealt with and repaired, it will fall away exposing the weakened brick beneath. Damp is not only unsightly but it can damage your health. If you or any member of your household suffers from a respiratory illness such as asthma, damp in your walls will make it worse, or in serious cases, actually cause asthma. Mould propagates itself and spreads by releasing tiny spores into the atmosphere of your home. These are airborne and are breathed in by whoever is in the house. If you have black mould inside your house, you must buy an anti-fungal treatment or damp wall treatment and get rid of it as soon as possible. After this, it is most important to locate the source of the damp and have it repaired to stop it happening again.

THE SERVICES WE OFFER ARE VARIED AND INCLUDE:

Protecting exterior walls from the effects of the weather means regular maintenance. Painting the surfaces with quality exterior paint will protect newer properties but older houses may already have signs of damp. In some cases, solving a damp problem and ongoing maintenance to a house can be a legal requirement, for example, with listed buildings, buildings in a public area, or a conservation area. There are several coating systems that eliminate the need for frequent repainting and maintenance of exterior walls on the market. A resin and polymer-based solution that is sprayed onto your walls provides a coating up to 20 times thicker than the ordinary three coats of traditional masonry paint. The chemical compounds in the coating are formulated to withstand wide variations in temperature, impacts and weather conditions, including ice. The chemical composition and the method of application allow this material to block out water from the exterior but still allow water to escape from the interior. And the colouring of the coating is designed to have a high stability so will not fade with UV radiation and it is resistant to both algae and mould. This advanced wall coating solution can be applied to all kinds of existing wall surfaces, including render, masonry paint, brickwork, tyrolean render, pebbledash, roughcast and stucco and usually have a 10-15 year guarantee. Don’t put off today… what might be damp tomorrow.

Gardening

DESIGN SERVICES

The potted garden Y

our house is on the market, your in-laws are visiting or you’re having a party. You need an instant garden. We all love the idea of pottering about in the garden but as ‘time poor’ individuals, we never quite get round to the trug and secateurs. For those who want truly instant results, forget sowing seeds, digging holes and clipping hedges. Instead head for the nearest garden centre or enlist a local gardener for inspiration. The quick answer is pots of colour. Containers look great on decks and patios, but also right in the middle of garden beds to add height and colour. Don’t be modest when buying containers: go for big, dramatic pots. The biggest mistake gardeners make with containers is buying too small. Oversized ones are bolder, exude confidence and fill more space. Set out pots in clusters of several sizes, placing a large one in the back, a medium one before it and a low bowl in front. Colour is arguably the most important element in container plantings and in gardening overall. It is also a good starting point when thinking about designing a container planting. Bright or subdued, analogous or contrasting, the colours chosen for a container planting (including the pot itself) all

interact with each other in important ways. Whether those colours work is entirely up to the creator. It’s amazing how great a garden looks after a quick grooming. The job is instantly satisfying because it makes things look so ‘pulled together’. Walk the garden, casting a critical eye on the beds, If you have dead foliage, just clear it out. Snip off dead flower heads and cut back tatty looking perennials that are not blooming. Then rake beds and paths clear of weeds. Apply bark; even if there’s no colour in the beds, a covering of bark mulch makes the garden look dressed up. Great gardens rely on structure: unchanging elements such as trees or garden sculpture, screens and fences, birdbaths, carefully placed groups of big rocks, arbors or free-standing columns. Even artfully placed garden furniture or salvaged garden or farm equipment can instantly bring life to a landscape. Most of us are so busy that we don’t get to enjoy our gardens until after dusk. That’s why you should consider garden torches, strings of decorative lights and outdoor fixtures to extend the use of an outdoor room into the evening. And there you have it: a garden to be proud of. by Valerie Breese

If you’ve ever sat at home watching Strictly Come Dancing and thought you’d like to give that a go, but never quite got round to it – then now is the time! Greenwich Dance is bringing a six week celebration of dance across the borough as part of The Royal Greenwich Festivals. Following last summer’s Big Dance, which attracted over 30,000 people to free activities across south east London as part of the London 2012 Festival, Greenwich Dances will once again be animating local streets, parks, libraries and community centres with a host of fun workshops and inspiring performances from some of the UK’s leading dance artists. Kat Bridge, Interim Artistic Director at Greenwich Dance said: “As Greenwich Dance celebrates its 20th birthday, this year’s festival will be bigger and better than ever! Whatever your age, whatever your style, there’s something for everyone, from the small and intimate, to the big and bold. Among the many activities lined-up, there will be Yoga and Tai Chi in parks, Grease at a Pop-Up Cinema in Well Hall Pleasaunce, street dance in General Gordon Square and a 100 hour dance marathon at The Borough Hall. And if you’ve ever thought about trying one of Greenwich Dance’s many courses and classes, make sure you head down to The Borough Hall for Open Doors, Open Dancing on 8 June. As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, Greenwich Dance is throwing open its doors and for a whole day of free activities. There will be taster workshops for all ages from pre-school to over 60s, as well as pop-up performances and a social dance. Kat added: “After 20 fantastic years at The Borough Hall, we’d like to say a big thank you to our local residents. Whether you’ve never visited us before or

you’re a regular, come and experience all we have to offer. Dance has many benefits - not only is it great exercise, it can build confidence and it’s a fun way to relax and de-stress. It’s also very sociable and great way to meet new people. Greenwich Dances runs from 17 May – 27 June. For full details and event listings visit www.greenwichdance.org.uk

An introduction to mindfulness and meditation

WE KNOW THAT TOO MUCH STRESS IS BAD FOR US, physically and mentally, yet we are applauded if we are busy people. Being too busy, rushing from one appointment to the next, thinking about dinner when we are having lunch, all mean we live in a state of perpetual anxiety and disconnection because - life happens in the moment, in the present, and if we are in our heads fretting about yesterday or worrying about tomorrow, we cannot fully enjoy what is happening right now. Local author Joy Davies helps us to realise this and encourages us to stop and engage with nature, daily, wherever we are. When we stop and focus, with an open mind, we start to connect with nature and the bigger picture, we start to de-stress, we stop thinking and start being: we experience the beauty right in front of us and connect with it. When we do this it allows us to connect with our own inner beauty. We gain a whole new perspective on life. Joy's book, Too Busy To Live Your Life? takes us on a 28-day journey, based on the well-proven theory that it takes 28 days to establish a habit, with stunning images of nature showing us what to look for, how to see the extraordinary in the ordinary and connect with it. Her words help us to reflect, accept and be grateful for what we have, find clarity and learn to really know what is important. Try her gentle and very practical introduction to mindfulness and meditation with this breathing and centering exercise. • First, sit down, preferably in a chair, which supports your back upright. Put your feet flat on the floor directly below your knees. Rock from side to side to locate your ‘sitting bones’ beneath your buttocks. • Close your eyes. Imagine a thread coming from the top of your head gently lifting up your spine. Drop your shoulders and allow your head to fall forward slightly. • Breathe out, completely emptying your lungs. Breathe in from your abdomen, counting slowly until your lungs are filled – 3 or 4 should do it – hold it for a couple of seconds, then… exhale slowly, counting out to the same number. Breathe in and out twice more. If thoughts come into your head, just let them float on by. If you want to continue the breathing exercise for longer you could set a timer for 1-2 minutes. Allow yourself 2 minutes to start with and progress to 5 over the next few days. Too Busy To Live Your Life? is now available exclusively from Waterstone's in Greenwich, priced £14.95.

You normally see scum around the basin, shower and bath but this sticky deposit not only adheres to the sanitary ware but onto your body when you bath, wash your hair and even on the fibres of your clothes and bed sheets. Soap manufacturers add lots of additional chemicals in an attempt to combat these problems, which can exasperate the problem of dry skin. After bathing with hard water a large number of people complain of dry, itchy skin. Using softened water and less soap will leave your skin softer, silkier and feeling that you have used a moisturiser. Your hair will no longer look dull and be full of residue products but look healthy and shinning. In todays modern world more and more people are being diagnosed with dermatological conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis, which present from just small patches of dry skin to large, painful inflamed areas of skin anywhere on the body. Eczema affects babies and the young while psoriasis affects more adults. Skin care of babies and children, who typically will have a more delicate skin, can be more readily irritated by excessive use of soaps and detergents which can lead to eczema often causing great distress for parents. Hard water has been attributed or linked to eczema for many years. A study carried out by Nottingham University carried out research, which identified that eczema was more likely to affect people living in the areas of the country receiving hard water. Using a water softener in a hard water area can have a beneficial effect on the treatment of eczema. Using less soap to clean the skin also appears to benefit people who suffer from psoriasis. Using soft water not only helps your skin stay healthier, some even say that their complexion and hair improves to make them look younger, too.

Fever pitch

WE'VE WAITED SO LONG FOR THE WARMER WEATHER AND NOW IT'S HERE… BUT SO IS THE HAY FEVER SEASON! Hay fever is a common allergic reaction to pollen that affects up to one-in-five people at some point in their life. Pollen is a fine powder released by plants as part of their reproductive cycle; it contains proteins that can cause the nose, eyes, throat and sinuses to become swollen, irritated and inflamed. When a person has an allergic reaction to pollen it causes sneezing, a runny nose, and itchy eyes. You can have an allergy to: tree pollen, released during spring; grass pollen, released during the end of spring and beginning of summer; and weed pollen, released any time from early spring to late autumn. There is currently no cure for hay fever but most people are able to relieve symptoms with treatment, at least to a certain extent. Treatment options for hay fever include antihistamines, which can help prevent an allergic reaction from happening and corticosteroids (steroids), which help reduce levels of inflammation and swelling. Many cases of hay fever can be controlled with over-the-counter medication available from your pharmacist, but if your symptoms are more troublesome it’s worth speaking to your GP as you may require prescription medication. For persistent and severe hay fever there is also a treatment called immunotherapy where sufferers are exposed to small amounts of pollen over time in order to build up a resistance to its allergic effects. See your GP if you have any concerns.

Meaning f ul Leisure Time

L

eisure time is a must, and a necessity. It gives you energy and time to unwind and recharge your batteries. We all need leisure or free time spent away from business, work and domestic chores. Men surprisingly have more leisure time than women, but a little ‘Me Time’ is important in a relationship and leisure time can reduce stress and put the joie de vivre back into your life. In asking the question 'what is the best way to spend your leisure time?', you will undoubtedly get a variety of different answers. Some people might even reply 'What leisure time?' Not really a surprising response considering most of us live such busy lives. In most instances you spend your free time with your friends and families, which is good. You may also choose to play, read, or fulfill your other hobbies and interests. There are many ways to spend your leisure time creatively, just look at our listing pages for inspiration. • Join a course for creative writing and learn how to write and create your own stories. If you don’t want to commit to a course, start with keeping a diary or writing a journal, explore your inner-most feelings and put them into words – for your eyes only. • Painting or drawing are the most relaxing ways of spending one's leisure

time. It gives a 'natural flow' of thoughts and even if you think you can’t draw try a beginners course and see if it’s for you. • Cycling with family or friends on a fine sunny day along the Thames Path is good for your health and a fun way to exercise and relax at the same time. • Walking or Rambling is a great way to meet new people, discover more about the area or just an opportunity to get some fresh air, especially if you spend most of your working day in an air-conditioned office. Just pace yourself and see where it takes you. • Dancing is growing in popularity. Put a pin in the list of dances and let your feet do the dancing, whether it's the tango, salsa, waltz, or zumba. • Singing can also help you manage your stress levels and has a ‘feel good’ factor. Many singing groups are now open to everyone, so while you concentrate on your breathing and lyrics you’ll forget all your worries, at least for a few hours. On the other hand, many people enjoy simply doing not much of anything, they might catch up on some much-needed sleep. There really is no 'best' way to spend your leisure time. It is all a matter of your own personal choice and preferences. It's your free time. Just enjoy it!

Personalise your wedding Valerie Breese knows just how to make your special day unique

BECKY, TAYLOR'S FARM

any weddings follow the same old format, and while there's nothing wrong with tradition, just now and again it would be exciting to be invited to a wedding with a 'wow' factor. Start thinking outside the box to make sure your wedding will set the benchmark. The hippy wedding in the televison series 'Jam and Jerusalem' started a craze for alfresco weddings, angel wings, hay bale seating and hog roasts. Why not take a theme and run with it: make it your own. What is your favourite book or film? Could it work as the basis of a wedding theme? Alice in Wonderland perhaps? or The Secret Garden‌ and, if the budget can stretch to James Bond, arrive by helicopter followed by a gold themed reception. Choose a 'shaken, not stirred' signature cocktail and give it a memorable name. Be original when it comes to the 'Save the Day' cards. Have an engagement party photo shoot and use the best image as an invitation. Why use paper, when you could use plywood, fabric or even balloons (the invitation appears as you blow up the balloon) or printed on tea-towels and fridge magnets. Challenge the norm by wearing a non-white wedding dress. Soft blush and pastel shades are in fashion this season. Why not turn the wedding day on its head? Instead of starting the day with the ceremony, begin with dinner the evening before. This way you get to greet all your guests, and you'll feel much more relaxed as you walk down the aisle.

JUSTINE & NICK'S WEDDING, KATA TENTS

If your guests will have to walk from the ceremony to the reception, consider providing them each with a single-coloured helium filled balloon that matches your colour scheme. The vision of dozens of balloons all 'walking' their way through a country lane or a town centre (great way to make sure your guests don’t get lost!) is fantastic and makes for great photos. Once all of your guests have arrived at the reception, you could have someone ready to arrange them into two rows for you to walk through. As you reach each guest, they release the balloon into the sky, another picture for your photo album! If you're having a Christmas wedding, ask each of your guests to bring a bauble for a Christmas tree. You'll use them on your tree every year, and it'll be a fantastic annual reminder of your wedding. Arrange family wedding photos, going back as far as you can, in vintage frames and display them at your ceremony or reception – it will provide a talking point for guests and create a lovely decorative feature. Lastly, let your guests send you packing with 'honeymoney'. Honeymoon gift list sites can be a smart way to have guests contribute to your honeymoon. This can save you money on what could be a very pricey trip, but you can also personalise your own web page and have your guests contribute to different parts of your trip, making it truly unique. 'Energy healing is a wonderful form of holistic healing, working on your mind, body and spirit' says Michelle Sands, Psychologist and Energy Healer at BlissKi, who specialises in Reiki, Chakra Balancing, Crystal Healing and Spiritual Healing. Unbalanced energies can cause physical or emotional illness and various techniques are used to restore this balance and release blocked energy channels, replenishing the body’s own strength and ability to heal. Michelle has been practicing various forms of energy healing for more than 20 years. By using the Japanese Byosen technique, Michelle scans the body and can sense any imbalance in her hands. The Blisski philosophy is that each client is individual, so they require a unique therapy programme. SARAH AT B~BROWN REVEALS HER TOP SPRING BEAUTY TIPS The sun has been shy this Spring, so for those starting to work on their beach bodies, Sarah suggests short, regular sunbed sessions to build up a base tan and prepare your skin for the holiday sun. (Remember you must still apply a high SPF sunscreen when in the sun to protect your skin). And why not treat yourself to a pedicure and wax for that flawless beach body! If you are getting married this spring, Sarah also suggests sunbeds over spray tans; especially if your dress is silk, satin or lace as spray tans can rub off on these materials. For those girly nights out, or for brides on their big day, a callus peel removal (a quick 30-minute treatment) will prevent that burning, pinching feeling by removing a build up of hard skin on the balls and heels of the feet – making sure you’ll be dancing till dawn. 020 8293 3939, www.b-brown.co.uk, 8 Old Dover Road, SE3

Business

The Bank of Mum & Dad By Beverley Morris

W

ith days of 100% mortgages long gone, parents often need to give their first time buyer offspring a helping hand onto the property ladder. This may be achieved in various ways. They may decide to release equity in their home by way of a mortgage or a re-mortgage. A gift out of savings, whilst reducing the donor’s estate, will nevertheless be taken into account for inheritance tax purposes if the donor dies within 7 years of making the gift. If they have other children, they may wish to consider changing their wills to take into account the fact that they have benefitted one of their children during their lifetime. Usually a solicitor has to inform the mortgage lender if a buyer is not funding the balance of the purchase price out of his or her own money. This is because the lender wishes to see some commitment on the part

of the buyer and that the buyer can save up money for their first home. However, the gift is a deprivation of assets on the part of the parents and renders the purchase “a transaction at an undervalue”. Creditors or a trustee in bankruptcy on behalf of creditors may apply to the Court within 5 years of the gift being made to have it set aside under the Insolvency Act 1986. A fraudulent motive is not necessary. Similarly, the fact that a gift is given as a present for a birthday or other celebration or event does not prevent it being open to challenge under the Insolvency Act. A bankruptcy search would need to be made against the donors of the gift, otherwise there would be a presumption of insolvency. In some circumstances, a declaration of solvency may be required or, alternatively, insolvency insurance may need to be taken out, especially if the gift is a

large amount or a large amount in relation to the donor’s assets. If the child has a partner and the purchase is to be in joint names, a loan rather than a gift should be considered in order to ring fence the money in case the child and his or her partner split up in the future. The loan would be secured by a second charge on the property to which the consent of the first mortgage lender would be required and the donors should also consult their own solicitor. Another possibility is that the parents take a beneficial interest in the property, ie they acquire a stake in the property which will increase or decrease depending on the state of the property market. BABINGTON HOUSE SCHOOL'S HEADMASTER & PUPILS

at d a e H New ol o h c S e Hous n o t g n i Bab

I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY to introduce myself as the new Headmaster of Babington House School. Having spent the last eight years as Deputy Principal of Queens College in London, I look forward to becoming part of this community. Babington House, as I am sure you know, is an outstanding school in every way and my biggest challenge is to maintain its development, so as to ensure our boys and girls receive a first class education in a nurturing and supportive environment. We select children on their all-round ability, personal qualities and special talents – I happen to think everyone has some – as well as their academic potential. Once here, they are expected to surpass their own expectations; it is amazing what young people will jump over if you set the bar high enough. Within its caring and supportive environment, Babington sets a brisk academic pace. This is something we develop, not just to encourage a love of learning for its own sake but to prepare our boys and girls for the highly competitive nature of the schools they move onto after Babington House. Babington House has high standards of behaviour, dress and conduct, benefiting from smaller class sizes and a strong sense of community. We are also committed to outstanding sport, music, drama, and the arts in their broadest sense, and we offer an eye-watering array of clubs, societies and extra-curricular opportunities which go on before, during and after school. Within our nurturing environment we also provide plenty of opportunities for leadership and responsibility. Perhaps most importantly, our academic, social and sporting endeavours are underpinned by core Christian values which include a respect for others and an awareness of a purpose greater than ourselves. I am immensely proud to lead such a vibrant community and encourage you to come and see for yourself. Display of public speaking talent STUDENTS AT BLACKHEATH HIGH SCHOOL were entertained by Hardeep Singh Kohli, renowned writer, comedian and radio and television presenter, when he visited their school to judge their annual ‘Greenman Public Speaking Competition’. All girls from years 6 to 13 enter the competition and Mr Singh Kohli judged the final round. The students gave speeches on a range of topics and he was clearly very impressed with their efforts, commenting that he was 'blown away by the calibre displayed, even from the youngest 11 year-old girls. It is an honour to be here and I would gladly hire you all as writers!' Announcing Sarah Oladele, aged 15, as the overall winner for her speech on the topic ‘If you couldn’t kill it yourself, you shouldn’t eat it’, he said; ‘you were totally charming and compelling with very confident delivery. I felt I knew you after just a few minutes and that is a very difficult thing to achieve with an audience.’ Shauna Clark Fitzpatrick was awarded the Lower School Prize and Head Girl Buffy Eldridge-Thomas was the Upper School winner. Blackheath High School has an excellent reputation for Public Speaking and Debating with students taking part in national competitions, including ‘Debating Matters’ and the English Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition, each year. Wine

Spring is in the air Wines for a new season with Carolyn Bosworth-Davies

A

t last we have shaken off winter and with May we can look forward to changes in what we eat and drink. For me the seasonality of food is all-important. I love English asparagus in May, Kentish strawberries in June, and the smokey smells of the barbeque in the garden, all of which have the quintessential aromas of summer. With the new season the demand for fresher, lower alcohol and unoaked wines begins to rise. It is a time when I seek out lesser-known grape varieties dotted around Southern Europe, white varieties such as Picpoul, Assyrtiko, Vermentino, Falanghina, Verdejo, and reds such as Nielluccio. Many of these grapes are not end-of-aisle supermarket fare, and you have to look carefully on the shelves, and often at more specialised wine shops or online specialists. But they are not obscure and will certainly reward you for the search. Picpoul is a variety that translates as ‘lip stinger’ for its lemony and refreshing acidity. Grown among a sea of red vines towards the Mediterranean coastal town of Sete, it is perfect with seafood, salads and sushi. Labelled commonly as Picpoul de Pinet (Pinet is the place name) it is a wine from the Languedoc region that hopes to gain its own appellation shortly. Majestics offer a good example at £7.99, or try independent wine merchants Stone Vine and Sun's Domaine de Creyssels 2011 at £8.25 – limey fresh with some weight on the palate. www.stonevine.co.uk. Assyrtiko is a Greek white variety that is widely planted on the dark volcanic soils of Santorini. The wines have concentrated mineral and stony flavours with assertive searing lemon acidity, absolutely perfect with grilled fish or salads. Try the excellent example at Waitrose or Theatre of Wine from producer Hatzidakis at around £11 per bottle. The Vermentino is sometimes referred to as Rolle in the south of France, but is an Italian variety found in Sardinia and Liguria. Recently producers are making single variety wine from Vermentino, and it is appearing under the new vin de pays category, Protected Geographical Indication, IGP D’Oc. One of the best exponents is Laurent Miquel and his Vermentino L’Atelier 2011 costs £9.99 at Waitrose or Ocado.com. It has no oak, but has herby floral notes backed with citrus fruit. Falanghina is an Italian grape grown around Campania, north of Naples. It often has more stone fruit character while still offering lots of freshness on the palate. Prices vary enormously – especially for examples from Irpinia – however Asda’s Extra Special 2011 Falhangina from Pulia, futher south, at £6.98 (on offer at £5) is terrific, with exotic flavours and a good concentration of melon and nectarine fruit. With asparagus many people recommend Sauvignon Blanc, but the Spanish Verdejo has some similarities with it, and can be much better value. Found in the vineyards of Rueda, Verdejo has mouth-watering acidity with pithy white grapefruit flavours and grassy notes. From the Wine Society, try the Las Olas Verdejo at £7.25, grown from organic vineyards and an ideal wine for the season’s asparagus, with salads, or just on its own. Finally, the wines of Corsica are becoming more available with the Wine Society recently putting together a range for the spring. The star in terms of value and personality, was the simple varietal Nielluccio – a version of the Tuscan Sangiovese grape produced by the Terra Nostra co-operative on the east coast of the island. At £7.50 this too is unoaked, with herby and spicy red fruits, and has warming ripe and rounded flavours that just make you feel as though the sun is shining down on you. Get some in for your first barbeque, you will love it. www.thewinesociety.com

GREENWICH THEATRE

Greenwich Theatre’s artistic director, James Haddrell, talks Christopher Marlowe and the area's historical connections

When preparing to bring a show to Greenwich there is always an added level of anticipation when that show is linked to the area. This season excitement is focused around the rarely produced DIDO Queen of Carthage, produced by Lazarus Theatre Company and written by Christopher Marlowe. While the tragic story of a doomed Trojan love affair may transcend time and place - fans of Marlowe will know he is strongly linked to this area, as at the age of only 29 the writer who came closest to rivaling William Shakespeare was murdered in Deptford. The circumstances surrounding the death of Marlowe remain the subject of fierce debate. Although official court records say he was killed in a fight over a bill at a Deptford pub, conspiracy theories abound. Marlowe's killer, whilst reported to have been attacked by the writer, apparently only had superficial wounds, insignificant enough to have been self inflicted in a bid to lend weight to the tale of the fight. So, maybe there was more to his death than a simple pub brawl…. There is certainly no shortage of potential conspirators. At the time of his death, Marlowe was suspected of being a dissident and holding heretical views, and as a result was followed by government agents. Sir Walter Raleigh has been cited as a suspect in the planning of the murder. He is known to have led a secret group of free thinkers - The School of Night - of which Marlowe was a member, and Raleigh would likely have ended up under investigation if the pursuit of Marlowe had continued. Even Queen Elizabeth I has been considered as potentially complicit in Marlowe's murder. Of course everyone loves a conspiracy theory, and I've no doubt that Marlowe would have revelled in the celebrity status it granted him. It has even been suggested that he wasn't killed at all, but staged the fight and substituted a corpse for himself at the last minute. Maybe Marlowe's remains lie in Deptford, the result of a fight, a murder or a political assassination; perhaps it was just one more act of theatre from one of the greats of the English stage. Whatever the truth, there will certainly be an extra level of excitement when DIDO Queen of Carthage, and the spirit of Christopher Marlowe, return to Greenwich this month. Dido Queen of Carthage plays at Greenwich Theatre from 14 May - 1 June. Box office 020 8858 7755 | www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk

MOGUL

Demystifying the myth by Michael Breese

W

CAROLA

ine tastings with food at Indian restaurants are relatively unusual. At the Mogul restaurant, in Greenwich we sat around a huge table in a very hireable upstairs room with a view of St. Alfege’s with Paramjit Dev, owner of Mogul, and wine promoter, Costanzo Scala, with a small group of diners. The evening’s intention to taste Mogul’s starters paired with chosen classic European wines to demystify the myth that wine doesn't pair with Indian cuisine. Potato cakes dressed with spicy chickpeas and tamarind chutney was presented with a French Gewurztraminer Reserve Laurentz. Gewurz means spiced, and the effect of the wine on spicy chickpeas, modified with tamarind chutney is an absolute eye opener. Gewurztraminer is a pink-skinned grape variety producing some of the most distinctively aromatic wines in the world. Fans of Gewurztraminer adore its highly perfumed scents and slightly spicy flavours, but seldom with food like this. Not so unusual with Indian food, Rioja Ondarre Graziano, an intense Spanish ruby red wine held balsamic aromas of mint and aniseed. It is medium to full bodied, rich and elegant, black fruits with a soft finish also. Chateau de Campuget is a splendid Invitation Rose, which relies on the best grapes Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Marsanne and Roussane, planted in the stony soil of the Rhone near Nimes, easternmost appellation of the Languedoc in Southern France.

The red wine also served, Suikerbossie, from Western Cape, South Africa, tasted rich as a red fruit salad, juicy and fresh with soft tannins. The purpose of these two excellent wines was to counter gorgeous king prawns in a light sauce, presented on a crisp deep fried whole wheat bread, a prawn Poori. The result is unexpected, as the prawn poori is already a full flavour burst, but with the wine a new dimension is achieved. Haryali tikka is chicken marinated in green herbs and hot spices, and Kali murgh, chicken marinated in fresh cream, with cashew nut and black pepper sauce. Both are cooked in the tandoor oven. They look wonderful. With the arrival of an Opal Ridge Gewurztraminer Verdelho, from Australia, a medium wine with a lovely, fresh, floral character balanced by crisp acidity works well with the spices. Where the chicken ends and the wine takes over is melded, and it is easy not to trust your palette. Le Bosq Rouge, another excellent expression of flair and individuality from the Languedoc arrives with it. We might be still standing (sitting, of course) but it is incredibly easy drinking, full of Southern French style and with a fresh aroma of cherries, underpinned with fresh cream, with cashew nut and black pepper sauce! Sheekh kebab and Gilhouti kebab appeared with another Opal Ridge Gewurztraminer Verdelho and a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon. The rich flavours of the meat counterbalanced by these two wines. Better call a cab, a wonderfully enlightening evening, but way over the limit. www.mogulindian.co.uk
