Walk for Tom becomes Run for Tom Courageous Greenwich resident, Zoe Ayling, limbers up to compete in the Virgin London Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 13 April.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has joined forces with the AHOY sail training centre, to offer a brilliant free opportunity for young people in the borough who want to try their hand at sailing, ahead of the Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta. The Greenwich-based AHOY centre is offering free sailing taster sessions for 15-24 year olds from the borough during the Easter school holidays. The sessions will be of particular interest to any young people in Greenwich considering signing up for the experience of a lifetime crewing a Tall Ship during the Falmouth to Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta, which is coming to London this summer. Royal Greenwich is the final host port for the magnificent regatta, taking place between 28 August and 9 September. It’s the first time in more than 25 years that such a major Tall Ships event has come to London. For young people in particular, crewing a Tall Ship offers a real opportunity to gain some valuable skills working as part of a team in a unique, exciting and challenging environment. These sessions are also an opportunity for young people to gain a sailing qualification – a brilliant way to gain a new skill and get a qualification which will look great on a CV. Anyone interested in signing up to the sessions should call 020 8293 5355 or email katy. mcardlecastle@cact.org.uk

After five years of raising funds for Charlton Park RDA with the annual Walk for Tom at Charlton FC’s Valley ground, Zoe has taken on this incredible challenge, dedicating the past few months to early morning training sessions, come rain or shine, to prepare for her marathon feat. Charlton Park Riding for the Disabled offers horse riding lessons to special needs children and is staffed solely by volunteers. Carol Kendall, Chief Instructor at Charlton Park RDA said: ‘We are the last Riding for the Disabled group in London who offer free lessons to the children. The only reason we can achieve this is thanks to amazing people, like Zoe and the Walk for Tom team, who do amazing things to raise funds for us.’ Walk for Tom was started in memory of Tom Warren, a fun-loving, lively, cheeky and spirited 10 year old who loved music, football and supporting Charlton FC. He had cerebral palsy from birth but rarely let the fact he was dependent on his wheelchair get him down. Tom’s favourite activity by far was riding the horses at the Charlton Park Riding for the Disabled centre. His favourite horse was honey. Sadly Tom died in November 2008. Tom is much missed by his family and friends who want to keep his memory alive by raising money for Charlton Park RDA, as this was a charity very close to Tom’s heart. So please dig deep for a great cause and give what you can to support Zoe and Charlton Park Riding for the Disabled at http://www.justgiving. com/Run-For-Tom-2014

Building Genie The Secrets Most Door, Window & Home Repair Companies Don’t Want Customers To Know For years doors, double glazing and home repair firms have had it their own way. Often charging customers thousands for new doors, windows and installs when a replacement part is all they need. And that’s hitting households hard at a time when every penny counts. Fortunately that era has come to an end. With BuildingGenie, a reliable London based window, door, conservatory, roofline and general home repair specialists, local homeowners have access to a real money-saving option. One that will reduce what could be an alarming bill in the thousands to an honest one in the low hundreds – or even lower than that. For example, the average single repair or replacement undertaken by BuildingGenie is less than £75. James Douglas, who previously established a specialist local window company, owns the business. After 2 years, the firm has re-launched with an expanded range of services to include a number of additional home repairs. BuildingGenie aims to give local homeowners access to a one-stop shop for all their home repairs. ‘There’s nothing else quite like BuildingGenie in the UK,’ he adds. “We offer a practical solution that other trade companies simply can’t – or won’t – provide. And while saving money is the biggest draw, we’re an environmentally friendly option too. We take the stress out of a situation that worries a lot of households, with many repairs usually completed within a couple of hours”

Great news for those home owners tired of peering through misted up windows, or parents with broken handles that have been swung on one time too many, all putting off calling out window firms for fear of the costs and upheaval involved. ‘Everyone wants to save money, but nobody wants to compromise on quality,’ says James.By fixing only the broken parts, and using like-for-like replacements, our customers get something that is as good as new and saves a small fortune in the process. BuildingGenie is committed to excellent customer service with a team passionate for home repairs. Contact BuildingGenie today on 0800 975 0175 or visit www.buildinggenie.co.uk

Stepping onto the Mortgage Ladder

Business

Rod Smith offers advice

A

re you a renter looking to step on to the property ladder? Are you anxious about the low returns on your savings? Do you own your property but want to get a better rate on your mortgage deal? Are you asset rich because of house price increases but struggle for income? Mortgages can come in many guises including first time buyer, buy to let, remortgages and equity release. At any point in time there may be thousands of deals and choices available in the market. Do you know what is best for you? Do you have the time to sift through all the information and offers? If you don’t then you may need the services of a professional regulated adviser. It has now been 5 years since the Bank of England set the base rate at its lowest ever level of 0.5%. Now that there are signs of an economic recovery the only likely change is up. Mortgage rates will inevitably follow. It’s a question of when, not if. It may be sensible to assess your options now rather than later, especially if you have a fixed, tracker or discount rate ending soon.

You can currently deal directly with lenders but there are new regulations in place from 26th April. These are in direct response to the financial crisis. They will mean that all future face to face and telephone based mortgage sales will need to be on an ‘advised’ basis. There are very few exceptions. In fact advised sales will be mandatory for those deemed high risk such as equity release. Lenders will have the responsibility for assessing affordability. Self certification of income will no longer be viable. Advice will become even more central to securing property finance. Mortgage intermediaries are required to have specialist qualifications. Some, however, can still restrict themselves to giving advice on one or a limited number of lenders. Others such as Lighthouse Financial Advice provide solutions and recommendations based on the whole market. If in doubt always ask if there are any restrictions. Some advisers such as Lighthouse, can also make recommendations on wider issues such as protection for you and your family in the event of illness,

accident or death and savings towards clearing some of the loan early. Not all can. Once again if in doubt; ask Of course there are other essential parties to any mortgage. You may need the services of surveyors, accountants, your employer, conveyancers and solicitors. However, a good mortgage broker acts as the hub. He or she ensures that the process happens as smoothly and efficiently as possible. For more details contact Lighthouse Financial Advice on 0208 425 0852 or email rod.smith@lighthousefa.co.uk

Diary of an estate agent (age 50)

Five 0, Zambia & 50% off ! For those that were paying attention, you will have noticed that I have gone from 49 3/4 to 50 by the time this publication comes through your door, not that I want to make a big deal of it! To celebrate, I am off to Zambia at the beginning of May with 11 school friends, to meet up with a friend who went off to Zambia not long after school and we have not seen him for over 30 years. As well as reminiscing, a safari and visit to Victoria Falls, we are going to do some charity work for a couple of days so we can do our bit! Should be fun! The market continues to be just as busy with still more buyers than sellers, so we have had a number of those best and final offers happening again. We have also had success with our selective marketing strategy (the cunning plan I mentioned last month) and have agreed a sale with a delayed completion, hence giving the owners time to try and find their next home.

Chislehurst Common

I have seen an amazing selection of properties in the last month, from a house in Woolwich, needing work at around £250,000, to a mansion in Bromley that will be coming to the market in excess of £6,000,000. There are also some ‘off market’ opportunities especially at the upper end, for example we have a beautiful arts and craft house in Bickley at £3,500,000. We have had success with helping clients who live in Blackheath and the surrounding areas who want to move to the borough of Bromley and get more for their money, as we have 4 offices in the Bromley area, so we can give you that extra guidance and help. As an added bonus if you instruct the Blackheath office to sell your home in April, we are offering 50% off our sole agency fee, so it will come down from 1.5% If you would like to chat through any to 0.75% plus VAT. Focus interview

To get a job done, ask a busy man… So, Meridian asked Gary Parker, MD of CNT Associates, Councillor for Charlton and involved with several local Community projects, how he fits it all in?

First of all, thank you for finding the time in your busy schedule to talk to us. How long have you been a councillor in Greenwich and was this your introduction to community projects? I have been a councillor for Charlton Ward since 2002, I was familiar with community projects and how they are managed and funded prior to this through my professional work. I have worked or liaised with a wide range of local organisations over the last decade or so. You are very involved with the local community. Is that because you have a social conscience and a desire to help people in the borough? Having a social conscience is important, but from a practical point of view, I view it as essential to work with and support local organisations and people who you could be making decisions about, either directly or indirectly. If you have no links to the community, you will inevitably make flawed or wrong decisions. You actively get involved in local community groups. At the moment, which groups are you working with? Some of these are local others cover a wider area, others are community campaigns. These include: Central Charlton Residents Association, Neighbourhood Housing Panel, Charlton Society, Charlton Rail Users Group, Big Red Bus, Rectory Fields Residents Association, Charlton Community Gardens, Chares, Total Wellness Project, Federation of Small Businesses and a number of specific community campaigns, such as the local Play Streets group, a group working to improve facilities on Charlton Park, a local Nepalese community support group and many others.

Your involvement with Central Charlton Residents Association, can you explain what the lasting benefit will be? I am working closely with the Central Charlton Residents Association on a range of issues, the main one being around local planning issues. I meet regularly with them discuss key issues, make regular representations to the council, clarify key issues and deal with individual representations from residents. The benefits from this are that local residents are more informed, they can make more effective representations to the council and they can alert the council to issues before they escalate into major problems. Do you want to involve more people in these projects, so that they succeed and become part of the community as a whole? I think we need as many civic organisations as possible. They enrich the fabric of the community and can support vulnerable and disadvantaged people they can give a voice to the voiceless, through individual and collective empowerment. With your specialist knowledge in fund raising, do you get involved in accessing funding that might be available for these projects? I tend to give advice in this area. Many local groups are volunteer projects and don’t actually need much money, but they certainly need support and advice and this is what I try to provide.

The latest trend -Vintage and Shabby Chic

Retail

Owen Pine and Oak, is a family run business based in a rural setting in Chelsfield, specialising in contemporary, reproduction, and antique pine and oak plus a selection of antiques. Perfect for anyone wanting to revamp a room. Wood is a beautiful natural product and it has never been more trendy to have a contemporary solid oak dining table in the same room as some vintage or shabby chic. This mix and match allows you to add style to a room without spending a fortune. Both pine and oak can be finished in a number of ways to get that shabby chic look A paint-wash finish can also bring out the grain, giving it a subtle seaside or vintage look. A spray paint finish totally covers the wood but over time the grain will show through. A particularly popular style at the moment is to have the base painted using a Farrow and Ball colour and leave the top as natural wood. If you need any help or advice on styling your furniture or choosing the right colour and finish then please do contact us here at Owen Pine and Oak, where we are only too pleased to help. www.owenpine.co.uk. 01959 534645. Is your Conservatory too cold in the Winter and too hot in the Summer? With over 50 years combined experience in the conservatory business, the directors of iCon know a thing or two about temperature differences and how to solve the problems many people experience. They pride themselves on carrying out conservatory and building work to the highest standard with all work undertaken by fully trained staff, giving you total peace of mind. They also promise to give potential customers a free, no obligation quotation along with no-nonsense conservatory roofing and insulated ceiling advice.

An iCon replacement conservatory roof is solid, thermally efficient with an outstanding low ‘U Value’, delivering astonishing results, keeping conservatories much cooler in the summer and much, much warmer in the winter. The standard polycarbonate or glass roof system found in almost all UK conservatories has virtually no insulating properties, even if roof blinds are installed. This means most of the sun’s heat is conducted in the summer, making the room unpleasantly hot for everyday use. Conversely, in the winter months, it can be impossible to keep most conservatories warm, because the same lack of insulation

allows most of the heat to quickly escape. iCon Roofs can either install a new highly insulated lightweight complete replacement roof, refurbish your existing or provide an insulated under ceiling that reduces the level of heat conductance found in an unaltered roof, making it vastly more efficient in matching the temperatures found in the rest of your home. If you are serious about solving your conservatory temperature blues, then you have just discovered the best solution on the market today! iCon Replacement Conservatory Roofs & Ceilings. 0800 00 33 55.

Cerberus Doors Discreet Security with Bespoke Design Statistically, the most frequent point of a ‘break-in’ remains the front door Family run business Cerberus Doors, Lee High Road, has just celebrated its first year at their showroom, which offers high quality, security front doors for both homes and businesses. Owner, Darius Virokaitis and his daughter Victoria, explain how this successful company made the transition from Europe to the UK. The company originated in Vilnius, Lithuania in 1992 and for twenty years was one of the Lithuanian market leaders in the production of security and armoured doors. Manufacturing of the doors still takes place in Lithuania, but five years ago they decided to move the sales side of the business to the UK. Having discovered a niche in the UK market for security doors that looked like any other door, and yet had all the strength and locking devices to deter even the most experienced burglar. When you think of a security door, you think of an ugly grey metal door and a series of locks, but with Cerberus Doors that concept is far from true. The company offers the highest quality, certified doors on the market today with a comprehensive range of designs, sizes and colours that would grace a period property or equally a modern building. Security doors can look like any other door, the only difference is in the construction. Between the external door panel and internal panel there are a series of components, which will not only offer security and peace of mind they will also reduce noise and help to insulate the home. The external door panel can be made to reflect a certain period such as Victorian, Georgian, traditional 1930’s or a 21st century town house. For those that prefer a solid wood door, Cerberus Doors offer a range of oak doors made from premium, engineered oak. With a wide choice of designs to choose from or as with some clients they may wish to replicate the original door that is to be replaced. Cerberus Doors is more than happy to work with a client’s design. They also make backdoors and French windows to complete your home security.

Premium Range Since 1992

There are several glazing options from clear, tinted, frosted, mirrored or with the help of our designers you can design an individual stained glass for your door. All security doors are glazed with Pilkington ‘Optilam’ P6B double glazed panels as standard and bulletproof glass also available on request. Lock-night latch and a multipoint locking mechanism are standard in all Cerberus doors, while biometrical and other electronic locks can be installed on request. The fitting of these high quality, tested security doors can enhance your home and reduce your home insurance. All doors are guaranteed for ten years and locks for three years. With a flexible manufacturing process, the doors are made individually for each customer, allowing the client to have exactly what they are looking for. www.cerberusdoors.co.uk. 020 8480 8078. A Room to Suit any Season

Interiors

As seen on Channel 4’s Double Your House for Half the Money

B

en and Eloise wanted a new kitchen, dining and living area that delivered the wow factor. As with most big decisions, the pair had mixed opinions when it came to the design of the kitchen. Ben wanted a modern minimalistic look, whereas Eloise was after something contemporary with a warm feel, but they both agreed that space was an important thing to consider. The couple decided to chose Ream, as they were able to offer a design that met their needs perfectly. White gloss acrylic doors with glass-effect edging creates a modern, stylish look and adds extra light to the room. Ream’s kitchen designer Lara notes that: “white flat doors allow your kitchen to be timeless, your kitchen can be simply refreshed by changing the colour of your walls if you feel that you want a change, as white really does go with everything”. This combined with a wrap effect using textured matt wooden panels, adds the homely feel that Eloise was looking for. The dining area enhances the design, with a luxury table to match the wood wrapped around the white gloss kitchen doors. Under-stairs storage features a bookcase and handy cupboard, while stylish wall-hanging shelving system for a TV and digital box completes the look. This creates a relaxed living area where the couple can entertain guests and enjoy quality time together. The flowing kitchen layout includes a handy peninsula with room for two stools – perfect for working from home or enjoying breakfast and informal dinners together. Karonia’s Mistral worktops are perfect to achieve the breathtaking, sleek finish. These clever designs are curved to suit the kitchen layout. Ben said: ‘the acrylic worktops really add the wow factor and bring a classy touch to the kitchen. You really can’t see any joints and they are excellent quality’.The luxury vinyl tiles supplied by Karndean Flooring offer a contemporary finish to the space. Designed to replicate stone, the Urbus tiles from the Opus range are both softer and warmer underfoot than natural stone flooring. Hardwearing and easy to look after, the ontrend large format tiles were the perfect choice.

Commenting on the final design, Ben and Eloise said: ‘our new multi-functional area is everything we could have hoped for and more. Sometimes we have to pinch ourselves and think: is this really our home? We love the design and spend most of our time in here. The final product is a unique room that offers amazing functionality and will never go out of fashion’. Change your Diet and Slow Down Ageing Want to slow down the signs of ageing? Then ditch the sugary, processed food and change your diet. That’s according to model and nutritionist, Katherine Elyse Blake who claims food is one of the most important factors in how young, youthful and radiant our skin looks. She believes sugar is one of the ultimate skin stressors, leading to skin complaints like acne and can increase the appearance of wrinkles. Poor nutrition results in thinner skin, reduces regeneration, increases damage that leads to signs of ageing and reduces the levels of the protein collagen. Katherine claims a few simple changes to diet and lifestyle can slow down the onset of lines and wrinkles, and among those changes are drinking more water, avoiding processed foods, and switching to wholegrain carbs. Katherine says: ‘Ageing is a natural and inevitable process but there are precautions we can take and lifestyle changes we can make to help slow it down. ‘Your skin is your largest organ and it’s extremely important to keep it healthy, nourished and hydrated. By following the tips you’ll be taking the right steps to improve your overall health and slow down the signs of ageing.’

Here are Katherine’s tips to keep the wrinkles at bay: Try to avoid adding sugar to sweeten food and drinks such as cereals, and tea and coffee. Instead replace with natural sugars like stevia. Reduce the amount of refined and processed white carbohydrates in your diet and replace then with wholegrain carbs like brown rice and lentils. Squash and sweet potato are also great replacements. Drink plenty of water. Keep a bottle with you at work and carry one around in your bag. It’ll keep you skin nicely hydrated. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for healthy skin, keeping your skin strong and full of moisture. Great omega 3 rich foods include avocado, oily fish, olive oil and raw coconut oil. Green tea is a must for skin renewal. The catechins found in it help prevent collagen from breaking down and reactivate dying skin cells. Berries contain potent antioxidants, which protect the skin from damage. Try to eat a handful a day. Brazil nuts are packed with selenium which helps produce antioxidant glutathione, which can help repair skin cell damage. Selenium is also great for keeping the skin clear and breakouts at bay. Kale is full of iron, which boosts collagen and fends off wrinkles. Try eating it raw or lightly steamed to preserve its antioxidants. Melon is great for skin elasticity. A 175g serving contains your RDA of vitamins A and C, which stimulate collagen. Eat with salad or as part of a smoothie.

Yoghurt is great for glowing skin. Dull looking skin can be due to imbalances in the digestive tract. Try and eat a tub a day or have a pro /pre biotic drink. Make a few simple lifestyle changes – try to keep stress to a minimum, exercise when you can, and if you smoke, quit. Look after your skin. Even when the weather’s bad, wear a moisturiser with an SPF and when it is sunny, make sure you put on your shades to protect the delicate skin around your eyes.

Tomatoes are packed with lycopene and Vitamin C which is great for collagen support and skin protection.

New Thrills as Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Opens Up

This spring, at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, one of the most exciting areas will open to the public - the new parklands in the south of the Park. From the 5 April, you can take advantage of worldclass sporting venues made famous during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, including the Aquatics Centre. The spectacular London Aquatics Centre, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, provided the breathtaking backdrop to countless world records and Ellie Simmonds’ dramatic swim into the history books. Designed for swimmers of all abilities, from absolute beginners to Olympic and Paralympic champions, London Aquatics Centre offers a wide-ranging programme of activities, from fun and family sessions, lane swimming, diving, swimming lessons, diving lessons, community swim sessions and other aquatic disciplines. The facilities are second-to-none – so much so that Tom Daley has made it his new training ground. Now everyone will be able to feel the thrill of swimming under that familiar wave-like roof, and enjoy some of the best community swimming facilities in the country for the same price as local

leisure centre swimming pools. And, with a total seating capacity of 2,500, watch out for world class events taking place in future, starting with the FINA/ NVC Diving World Series. Cyclists of all disciplines will be able to use the Lee Valley VeloPark, this world-class facility for track cycling, road racing, BMX or mountain biking, however you get your two-wheeled thrills. Centred on the iconic, award-winning, 6,000-seat Olympic Velodrome, where Sir Chris Hoy and his Team GB and Paralympics GB compatriots set the 2012 Games alight, Lee Valley VeloPark also offers a brand new one-mile, floodlit road cycle circuit, the remodelled and floodlit Olympic BMX track and 8km of mountain bike trails. No wonder the world’s top cyclists can’t wait to flock to Lee Valley VeloPark to train and compete. Get a new perspective on London from the ArcelorMittal Orbit, the UK’s tallest sculpture at 114.5 metres. This extraordinary attraction is the result of

a creative collaboration between world-renowned artist Sir Anish Kapoor, designer Cecil Balmond and ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel and mining company. With two observation floors, at 76m and 80m, the ArcelorMittal Orbit provides visitors with stunning views over the Park and across London’s famous skyline. It is both a work of art and a thrilling experience. Walk four new interactive trails covering the London 2012 Games, nature and biodiversity, education and art and culture Let your children run free in new play areas offering everything from climbing walls to sandpits and giant fountains. Designed to be a bold, new space for local children to play, the Tumbling Bay playground features rock pools, sand pits, tall treehouses, and wobbly bridges, as well as slides, swings and plenty of space to run about. All this makes for a perfect day out.

Discover the Joie de Vivre At Your Leisure

Leisure

We have so little time for ourselves or feel guilty when we do, but leisure is one of life’s luxuries that shouldn’t be scrimped on. Whether you want to boost your heart rate, indulge yourself or just escape for a while take pleasure in leisure.

Laid back

Full-on action

Ease yourself into an outdoor pursuit and explore the greener side of Greenwich with a Green Chain walk, enjoying wildlife, nature reserves, parklands and formal gardens. Join their events mailing list too and take part in anything from guided walks to monthly movie nights and cycle workshops. www.greenchain.com For therapeutic relaxation, nothing beats working with clay. Try a pottery course at Maze Hill Pottery. Visit www.mazehillpottery.co.uk for start dates.

For some, leisure time isn’t about pulling into the slow lane, it’s fuelled by adrenalin. So, for the more energetic and thrill seekers among us, you might like to drop-in to the newly open London Parkour Academy at Trinity Buoy Wharf and see if freerunning is up your street. If you need to bring your pulse rate back down afterwards, make sure you visit the Longplayer next door in London’s only lighthouse and delight its strange but beautiful sounds and the solitude of the lighthouse.

If you’d like something more indulgent, Meopham Valley Vineyard tours tick that box. Wander the vines of Happy Valley with a personal tour and finish with a wine tasting, or volunteer to be involved in their next harvest and be rewarded with a harvest lunch on the vineyard! www.meophamvalleyvineyard.co.uk

You’ll soon find exhilaration harnessed in the air and scaling the walls at south east London’s largest Indoor climbing wall, The Reach www.thereach.org.uk. With regular socials, it’s a great way to meet new people, keep fit and learn a new skill; all in the pursuit of leisure. If you prefer something on ground level, however, take advantage of being so close to Mother Thames with a huge variety of water-based activities at the Royal Docks. Try zorbing and prove it’s not just hamsters who have fun inside a plastic ball, or take a refreshing RIB river ride and zip across the Thames, sail with the family or see how stable you are on a wakeboard.

Getting warmer Now the weather is brightening up, dive in to Charlton lido and get in shape for the summer or perfect your serve late into the evenings at their floodlit tennis courts. Then sit back and relax with a good book (or your favourite magazine) on the sun terraces, which opens this Easter. If it’s a regular escape you’re in need of, or if you secretly harbour a fascination for Glee, book a free taster at Rock Choir in Blackheath or join their weekly choir practice. What could be more Joie de Vivre than singing your heart out to a power ballad? www.rockchoir.com Continue expressing your lust for life at Blackheath Conservatoire. Now that they’ve teamed up with City Lit, be leisurely with a pencil, paintbrush, or garden spade in your hand. Courses range from traditional art classes to flower arranging, photography, and creating your own garden haven. www.citylit.ac.uk/courses/blackheath

No sea legs? Then take to two wheels and follow the Thames path, stop off at any of the pubs along the way for a well-earned rest and enjoy the views. Don’t own a bike? No problem. Cycles UK www.cyclesuk.com have a range of off road bikes to make it a smooth ride. The list really is endless for ways to enjoy your leisure time locally, so just get out there and enjoy life! HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN BENEFIT YOUR DENTAL TREATMENT? It is incredible how sensitive the mouth is. Most dental patients can feel a difference that is 1/5 the diameter of a human hair. So a little too much filling in a tooth or a poorly fitting crown is really noticeable.

Our microscopes offer 20x magnification, so our team of dental specialists are able to work with greater precision and dexterity than would be possible with the naked eye. This inevitably improves the success of the treatment and its longevity.

By introducing the most up-to-date operating microscopes into dental surgeries, We can also offer nervous patients the latest patients will receive more precise treatment technology in 3D virtual reality video glasses. and a better diagnosis. You can then watch a film or your favourite TV programme whilst having your treatment. At Finn Dental Specialists we use operating microscopes for all of our examinations and procedures. They allow us to see minute defects, elusive cracks and obscure root canals and help us to diagnose problems in the earlier stages of a disease process.

FINN DENTAL SPECIALISTS So if you have a niggling dental problem that needs solving or would like a comprehensive dental examination then our warm and friendly team are happy to help. Our services range from check-ups to full mouth reconstruction, including implants, implant retained dentures, root canal therapy, crowns and bridges, tooth whitening and cosmetic dentistry as well as hygienist treatments. Just call 0208 658 1230 or email info@finndental.co.uk Finn Dental Specialists, Backwoods, Kelsey Lane, Beckenham BR3 3NE www.finndentalspecialists.com

Another benefit is that via a TV monitor, our patients are able to see the images captured during an examination. These are an excellent way of helping patients to better understand their diagnosis and why certain treatments may be necessary, especially for problems or conditions that produce no obvious symptoms.

Education News round up

Education

Thought-provoking production Recently Bromley High School enjoyed a fabulous Senior School production of Edward Scissorhands. The production involved over 100 girls acting, singing, dancing and supported throughout by live music from The Scissor Band. This show was outstanding, not just in the quality of the drama and music, the professional nature of the production and the outstanding performances, but also in the thought- provoking nature of the story. Edward is a ‘misfit’, an unfinished automaton created by his inventor father. The chattering housewives in town cannot understand him and certainly do not understand the family that takes him in. They cannot see why they would accept his differences and celebrate what he is able to achieve. His adoptive mother and father take Edward into their home to live with them and their family and protect and encourage him, accepting him for what he is. They plan exciting initiatives for him to use his fabulous talents and see through the scissor hands to the boy inside. Their children struggle to understand him but eventually accept Edward for who he is, developing a deep affection for the boy who does not fit in. The ending is not a happy one unfortunately, but does ask us to consider how we treat those who do not fit the mould and perhaps encourages us to look at those around us differently. When choosing a school for your daughter I would urge parents not to look at data tables, but at the pupils who leave the school. It is their personal development, their determination to succeed, and their attitude to life, which are indicators of the success of a school. I would welcome you to come and meet our girls at any time, and look forward to meeting you. Louise Simpson, Head For 4+, 7+, 11, 13+ & 16+ Entry in September 2015, please visit us at our Open Events on Thursday 1 May, 2.15 pm - 3.45 pm, and Saturday 4 October, 9.30 am 1.00 pm.

Please contact the school via our website: www.bromleyhigh.gdst.net or our admissions office on admissions@bro.gdst.net or Tel 020 8781 7000 to arrange a visit.

A community where individuals flourish Founded in 604, King’s Rochester has evolved into an outstanding 21st century school for 3 to 18 year old boys and girls with excellent facilities at all levels. Academic standards are high, resulting in an outstanding 2013 inspection report (ISI) and parents celebrate the way King’s supports their children to achieve top academic results - without being an examination hothouse. King’s is a school with a broad-ability intake and recognises that every child is unique, with talents and strengths which may extend far beyond the classroom. With its cathedral links, music is a great strength at King’s and Rochester Cathedral is regularly filled with the sound of our concerts. The School’s recent acquisition of the newly named King’s Rochester Sports Centre now provides King’s pupils – and the local community who share it – with some of the best sporting facilities in the South East.

Girls showcase their creative talents Fashion week wasn’t the only recent event celebrating new creative talent in London, as girls of Blackheath High school sashayed down their own catwalk, wowing their audience, to showcase the creative talents of GCSE and A level students in their annual Fashion Show. The show, modelling garments they have conceived, designed and made themselves.

Pupils look forward to showing you around at the school’s next Open Day on Saturday 10 May 2014 from 9.30am to 12noon. Booking is not required but please contact Registrar, Lynne Davies, 01634 888590 or email admissions@kings-rochester.co.uk with any questions or for more information.

Exciting time at Babington House School This is a really exciting time for Babington House School with the arrival of a lot of new children. We are now accepting boys to the age of 11 in our co-educational Nursery and Preparatory School. The Senior School is now academically selective with an Entrance Examination for Year 7 entry. One interesting area we are developing at the moment is a small Sixth Form starting in September. Initially, focusing on subjects such as Psychology, Law, Maths, Business Studies and Government & Politics, with a real focus on work experience and our students’ future career path. Tim Lello, Headmaster says, ‘This is a modern school with traditional values where self-discipline is highly prized, where bright pupils benefit from carefully monitored and well directed learning and where each child is known as an individual’. We are also running Holiday Clubs at Easter and in the summer, offering fun and exciting activities for children 3 to 12 years. See website for details and to make a booking.www.babingtonhouse.com

Healthy Snacks Encourage your children to snack on fruit instead of biscuits or other sugar laden treats. If your child won’t eat fruit, keep trying different types and presenting it in different ways. Keep a large fruit bowl with a wide variety of fruits and make it a special treat to choose which piece they want. If they won’t touch fresh fruit, try them with bags or rolls of dried fruit. Berries and yogurt: give your child a small pot of vanilla yogurt and a little tub of berries – like strawberry wedges – and encourage them to dip the berries in the yogurt. Popcorn: make up a batch of popcorn – it takes 5 minutes, is dead cheap and a lot healthier than crisps. Just don’t add salt to it. Bake some homemade mini muffins – adding fruit where you can – and freeze them. When they’re after a treat, just defrost one in a microwave. Smoothies: blitz up a bunch of different fruits with some yogurt, add a straw and voila, a healthy, energy giving snack.

Dyscalculics - just because you can’t count doesn’t mean you don’t count Whilst 4% of the population are severely affected by dyslexia and have problems with words, few people realise that 5% of the population have similar problems with numbers. Dyscalculia, as it is known, is a real disability. It is not some fancy fad, an excuse for performing badly. As the Government’s Chief Scientific Officer, Sir John Beddington, wrote, ‘Dyscalculia is currently the poor relation of dyslexia, with a much lower public profile. But the consequences of dyscalculia are at least as severe as those for dyslexia.’ Professor Paul Moorcraft has suffered from acute dyscalculia since primary school although, like most people, he didn’t realise there was a name for being seriously lousy with numbers. It is wrongly assumed that people with maths problems are either lazy or stupid but often the opposite is the case. ‘I thought I was just lousy at maths. It has affected my whole life. Nevertheless, I went from school to teaching at ten universities around the world; from primary to professorship.’ Professor Brian Butterworth, the world’s leading authority on dyscalculia says, in his foreword to the book, ‘This book will help to raise the profile of dyscalculia, and should be required reading for all sufferers, all parents of sufferers, and all teachers, not to mention ministers and officials in the Department for Education.’ It Just Doesn’t Add Up: Explaining Dyscalculia and Overcoming Number Problems for Children and Adults ISBN‐13: 978‐1‐908691‐85‐9

Food & Drink

Tom’s Kitchen Spring may have sprung but the evening was cold. A welcome sight was the bar at Tom’s Kitchen, a modern British twist on a French brasserie where we stopped to study the menu over a drink. Taken through to the sizable, 130-seater restaurant, we took a table with a view onto the fully-lit stainless temples of commerce, relaxed into our comfort zone and ordered Mackerel Pate, black olive tapenade with a choice of terrific sourdough breads while we decided on our main order. The menu offers British, comfort food and the ethos is to use UK suppliers, a good start. Beef is a very important menu feature. Black Label Premier Turton’s of Devon beef fillet, hung for 21 days, is as good as it gets. To taste the real thing, I was drawn to steak Tartare. All raw for the carnivore, the meat is pale with tiny flecks of cornichon (gherkin to me), surmounted by a saucy deep-yellow raw egg yolk perched on a presentation spoon with beautiful green, peppery rocket. With gently toasted sourdough bread and a little butter, the plate whispered ‘eat me!’ The texture is silk-smooth and light, and the taste must be worlds better then the inventive Tartars enjoyed, having placed raw beef under their saddles before riding all day to tenderise the meat. The Butternut Squash soup with spiced honey and Brioche croutons arrived for my partner, it’s rich colour matched by the rich, smooth flavour and hint of honey, real comfort food. St. Patrick’s Day put Irish stew with Colcannon firmly on the Specials menu and on my plate. The meat is lamb, cut from the neck, not fillet or scrag, but thick end. Satisfying, with plenty of rich gravy. Colcannon brings chopped spring onions and cabbage sublimely into mashed potato, and you’ll know that you’ve eaten it. I thought about a Guinness, but decided on a carafe of Tempranillo Candidato Barrica 3, La Mancha 2010. Slow roast Pork Belly (I heard the crackling) with roast vegetable mash, her chosen main, was complemented with a glass of Whitstable Bay Blonde Lager. Desserts chosen, old favourite, hot chocolate pot with pistachio ice cream, the perfect combination of hot and cold. Trio of Sorbet, passion fruit, blackberry and pink grapefruit was so incredible that I near bolted it, suffering brain freeze only revived with a wonderful glass of golden Tokayi. Tom’s Kitchen, Westferry Circus, Canary Wharf. Michael Breese.

The Prince of Greenwich The little run of shops and pubs in Royal Hill is a hidden gem in Greenwich and well worth a stroll through when the weekend hordes descend. It’s a pretty street with an array of flower, cheese, tea and antique shops that are beautifully presented and filled with unusual finds, perfect for a quiet wander. Set in the middle of these is The Prince of Greenwich pub and if you’re looking for a peaceful drink in friendly surroundings, this is the answer. I love a pub dog, and Bongo, their resident retriever, greets all newcomers with a quizzical sniff and nod before returning to his snoozing position. It’s a friendly, relaxed place that plays good music and is clearly maintained with a lot of pride and love (not a sticky table surface in sight). The bar staff are friendly and gracious and genuinely interested in their regulars. The regulars in turn are chatty with newcomers; it’s a lovely place to be. Their menu has good, solid pub food with interesting twists and they also offer bar snacks with plenty of homemade options from between £3 and £4 if you’re in a rush. I couldn’t order from the evening menu until 6pm, which left me time to explore the wine list and settle on a nice Montepulciano and the papers. This is definitely a pub that you can relax in and I’ll be returning to try the rest of the menu. I chose their 8oz Lincolnshire Pork Burger, with hand cut chips, rocket and salsa, which was delicious and enormous! Everything is clearly made with pride and well presented; they could easily give Gourmet Burger Kitchen a run for their money at The Prince. So, if you want to find a peaceful retreat this weekend whilst out and about in Greenwich, take a stroll along Royal Hill and settle in at The Prince. Tamsin Steer.

Nepalese New Year

Food & Drink

Nepalese New Year falls on April 14, and ‘Sindur Jatra’ as it is known, is celebrated to welcome the advent of spring. The Nepalese celebrate spring and the New Year by throwing vermilion powder over each other during the Sindur Jatra Festival. Sat between India and China, Nepal has a unique food heritage that has been inspired by both countries. Much of the cuisine is a variation on Asian themes. Other foods have hybrid Tibetan, Indian and Thai origins. Momo—Tibetan types dumplings with Nepali spices—are important in Newa cuisine. They were originally filled with buffalo meat but now also with goat or chicken as well as vegetarian preparations. Also special foods such as Sel Roti and Patre are eaten during festivals.

Greek yogurt 2 tbsp. lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seed 1 tbsp. crushed chilli 2 pieces whole red chilli, spring onions for dressing

Picturing British Trees – Present 5th April – 7th June 2014

“Many artists from all periods of art history have chosen trees as a primary subject for different reasons: compositional device, structure, pattern, abstraction, narrative, symbol, or metaphor. As in the past, it will continue to be a subject of rich possibilities and one to which successive generations of artists will inevitably return.” A short and selective survey of the tree in (mainly British) art history Tim Craven David Nash, Ash Dome 1997, charcoal and pastel on paper, 41 x 58 cm Copyright The Artist, courtesy Annely Juda Fine Art, London

Under the Greenwood Picturing British Trees - Present, the new exhibition at Gerald Moore Gallery, South East London, looks at how artists working today are still drawing inspiration from the British tree. This group exhibition features thirty two of the country’s leading contemporary artists and explores the iconography of the tree within contemporary British culture. From our collective habit to “instinctively venerate the Oak as the Heart of England” to the shattering ecological tragedy of ash die-back, edging “insidiously across Britain” we owe so much of ourselves to the greenery around us. The artists include Turner Prize 2011 nominee George Shaw and Old Elthamian Jemma Appleby. Each of them has been invited to contribute a work which shows how trees figure in their art practice. The exhibition examines their different approach from the digital manipulations of Dan Hays, Christiane Baumgartner and Katsutoshi Yuasa to the plein air paintings of Michelle Dovey. David Nash’s Ash Dome takes on new meaning in the light of the latest fungal threat to our native trees; George Shaw revisits the childhood mysteries of a patch of urban woodland, while Ann Arnold, Graham Arnold and David Inshaw imbue the Wessex landscape with a sense of magic and wonder. Hannah Maybank, Mick Moon, Anthony Whishaw and Paul Winstanley explore the threshold where, as the light fades, familiarity and reassurance meet otherworldliness and doubt. Others artists bringing their own personal approach, technique and viewpoint to this fascinating subject include Jo Barry, Philippa Beale, John Blandy, Tim Craven, Abi Kremer, Ffiona Lewis, Elizabeth Magill, Fiona McIntyre, Paul Morrison, Howard Phipps, Michael Porter, Lisa Ryuter, John Salt, Nick Schlee, Celia de Serra, Lesley Slight, Alice Stepanek, Steven Maslin and Clare Woods. In conjunction with the show there will be workshops, lectures, and special events. Additionally, a fully illustrated catalogue covering this exhibition and its sister exhibition, Under the Greenwood Picturing British Trees - Past and Present, is available from Gerald Moore Gallery priced £15.

Hannah Maybank, The Visit Courtesy of The Artist and Gimpel Fils, London

The exhibition is open free of charge to the public from Saturday 5th April until Saturday 7th June 2014, 12-4pm. Developed by St. Barbe Museum and Art Gallery and produced in partnership with Southampton City Art Gallery. For more details visit www.geraldmooregallery.org

One area of the theatre industry that I find our audiences are often unaware of is the thorny topic of theatrical stage rights - the need to secure permission to stage a particular play or musical when the writer is still alive, the work is still in copyright or the rights are held by a particular writer’s estate. While you might expect writers to want their work staged as often as possible it is not always that simple. For example, we recently requested the rights for Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. The show wasn’t playing anywhere in London and we thought it would make a great addition to the line up at the theatre. However, another producer had secured them ahead of us. Even though they weren’t producing the show at that time, they had snapped up the option to produce the show should circumstances become right for them, and had secured exclusivity, preventing any other production from taking place in London and using up their perceived potential audience. We had more success with our production of Momo, the musical adaptation of the book by Neverending Story writer Michael Ende (just coming to the end of a London tour now), for which we had to negotiate with the Ende estate in Germany. In that case it was us holding the exclusive London rights. Given the competition to secure permission to stage the big modern titles, we have just received some exciting news. For a strictly limited run in May, at the Brighton Fringe and then here at Greenwich Theatre, we have been granted the rights to stage the American musical The Last Five Years by multi-award winning writer Jason Robert Brown, and we have secured a stellar cast. The musical, written for just two performers and telling the story of a romance both forwards and backwards, will star Danielle Hope (winner of the BBC’s Over The Rainbow and subsequently star of The Wizard Of Oz at the London Palladium) and Jon Robyns (star of hit west end shows like Avenue Q and Les Miserables).

Aqua Comp

What’s more, this will be UK audiences’ last chance to see the show live on stage for a while, as the rights are being withdrawn after our production to make way for a major film version of the show. That means no matter how successful the show becomes, there can be no more than the agreed 3 performances in Brighton and 4 performances in Greenwich - but for that limited time, in the poker game of theatre rights, we hold all the cards... The Last Five Years plays at Greenwich Theatre from 15-17 May.

Greenwich Hospital’s New proposals

A new public open space with a pavilion for a food market

Covered Market

Investment programme to improve Greenwich Town Centre’s historic assets and enhance the local economy.

Fry’s Court Greenwich Hospital is not only an ancient Crown charity providing charitable support to serving and retired personnel of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and their dependants, but it is also responsible for an impressive property investment portfolio, which includes the historic Greenwich Hospital buildings and the nucleus of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. Greenwich Hospital subsequently acquired the site of much of what is now the commercial centre of Greenwich surrounding the Market area. The Hospital also owns the Promenade at Greenwich Pier. To the east of the Old Royal Naval College buildings Greenwich Hospital owns a number of core residential premises in Park Row, Eastney Street and Crane Street.
As landlord of the Greenwich covered market, Greenwich Hospital have completed an extensive public consultation and are waiting for the outcome of the planning department to the proposed changes to the market and surrounding area. The Greenwich enhancements include the appearance and quality of shops and restaurants on offer within Greenwich, to create a unique high street rather than a typical high street elsewhere in London. By working collaboratively with the Royal Borough

of Greenwich, local residents, retailers, traders and stakeholders have a long term strategic investment programme to improve Greenwich Town Centre’s historic assets and enhance the local economy.

Living above the shop Greenwich Hospital has also refurbished apartments above some of the shops in Nelson Road to provide luxurious accommodation in central Greenwich, close to all the amenities.

Their proposals include: The fabric of the covered market to be retained, cleaned and the existing steel structure, painted. A new glass and solid roof, retaining the existing cobbles
and new granite paving to replace modern brick. New in-ground services, new lighting
including an updated fire alarm system and Improved maintenance and cleaning. Fry’s Court will become a new public open space with a pavilion for a food market and occasional events, together with the addition of a new storage building and lift access into the existing building. There will be granite paving with in-ground services and new lighting plus the planting of silver birch trees and soft planting alongside residential access. The existing building on the south side of Durnford Street dates from the early 20th Century. This new proposal seeks to retain and refurbish this interesting building to provide high quality retail space. Meanwhile, 1 Durnford Street will be retained and restored with a new modern stone clad retail space to the rear. A new concealed service yard will service Greenwich Market, Durnford Street will be resurfaced and there will be new signage for the market.

As part of plans to create homes for the urban village with more local permanent residents, Trehearne Architects has delivered a development of new townhouses and apartments on Old Woolwich Road, which are available to rent. The development of four two-bedroom townhouses and three two-bedroom apartments is situated in a quiet corner of Greenwich just off Park Row and Old Woolwich Road. Built on a small patch of land that was previously used as a car park, it is just a stone’s throw from Maze Hill station, Greenwich Park, the riverside and the historic town centre. Rents start from £1325 pcm. For further information, please contact Charlotte Russell at Jones Lang LaSalle on 020 8463 6741.
