Cleaner, crisper and (we hope) altogether more pleasing; we’re hoping you’ll love the redesign as much as we do. We’ve also waved the magic wand over our new-look website too. Take a peek at meridian-magazine.co.uk, where you can read our issues online, anytime. Our December issue starts with a very warm WELCOME IN. Editor, Valerie Breese talks creating kerb appeal, showstopping entrances, open fires, festive drinks and even party bags to make certain your visitors’ feel at home this Christmas. As we’re all too aware, December isn’t conducive to keeping it cheap and cheerful. In REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL, Claire McKinson picks 5 free, local events which will get you out of the house and into the Christmas spirit for next to nothing! It’s boots and belts, coats and cardigans in FASHION this month. In IT’S A WRAP we show you how to layer your favourite winter-warmers to keep you toasty and still looking stylish. We’ve also been snooping around to find some great last-minute gifts. Plus, WIN! An iPad Mini. KEEPING IT LOCAL - we have all the details of the festive fun events at Canary Wharf

Whether you can’t face cooking this Christmas, or you’ve already planned to prepare a festive feast, we have something for both sides of the table. EAT IN dishes up some meat-free options, and if Locale’s ‘smoked black pepper and basil margarita’ cocktail recipe doesn’t tempt you, the competition will: WIN! A case of wine for Christmas from Theatre of Wine! Pulling you away from a Christmas overload, our area focus this month is ELTHAM. Once favoured and frequented by Henry VIII, it’s now a great choice for families wanting more house for their money. Nicola Berry investigates. All this, plus the latest local news round-up, and education, health & beauty, lifestyle, arts & events, business and property updates from in and around the local area.

Welcome in… Entertaining this season? Give family and friends a warm welcome to your home with our easy updates for an instant festive feel in every room.

Think about whom you will be entertaining for the festive season then decorate accordingly. No Christmas party would be complete without the obligatory mistletoe. Hang it above the front door to get guests into the party spirit as soon as they arrive. It’s been called the most wonderful time of the year, and the Christmas season certainly has a warmth and joy all its own. Start by creating a seasonal ‘kerb appeal’ for your home by decorating the pathway to your house with warm white pea lights intertwined in shrubs or small trees. Next, the front door.
The wreath is one of the most time-honored of Christmas decorations. The ancient Romans created wreaths out of bay laurels as a sign of victory or out of pine or holly to symbolise immortality. Early Germanic winter traditions involved the making of evergreen wreaths to symbolise the life soon to return in the spring. Wreaths were historically an element in decorating for any type of celebration, often being ornamented with food and candles. Today’s Christmas wreaths are often constructed from the same evergreens and holly that the ancients used, but some are much more elaborate with dried fruits or ornaments. Hang a wreath on your front door to welcome your guests, or place wreaths inside your house as a traditional decorative touch.

If you are having a largely grown-up Christmas, a showstopping entrance is the thing to aim for. Keep the look sophisticated by using colour coordinated decorations and accessories to unite the space. For instant impact, create a central display of baubles in classic urns and bowls and make the most of windowsills and decorative wall hooks; a sprig of aromatic foliage here and there will enhance these often over-looked features. Whether in the hallway, kitchen or the reception room, now is as good a time as any to do a quick repaint. Lots of people like to paint during the spring and summer, but why not do it before you have the entire family over for dinner? Grab a lovely can of paint and get to work. A powdery blue, silvery grey, a crisp white or a key lime green are colours that look great year-round and give any space a quick and easy refreshment.

In the reception room, if you have an open fire, light it. It not only adds warmth but a satisfying glow. Plush velvet sofa and armchairs in shades of fuchsia and damson look sumptuous against the dark backdrop, with metallic accessories and a gilt mirror over the mantel adding an extra touch of luxury. If your sofa has seen better days, a quality throw will transform it. By adding a mirror or two, you will create space and reflect light from candles and fairy lights, adding to the magic. Your guests will have dressed up so make sure your home is adequately attired too. A striking arrangement of baubles above the dining table will add a sense of occasion. Accessorise with a cluster of taper candles for added drama. Festive drinks are always a hit. Try spiced cider for an alternative to mulled wine. Henry Westons Mulled Cider now makes it possible to enjoy exceptional mulled cider at home and the handy 2.25 litre box makes it ideal for entertaining. Serve in pretty glass tumblers and garnish with sprigs of herbs for a festive flourish. www.westons-cider.co.uk For a retro Christmas party, why not present your guests with a party bag when they leave. Perfect for rewarding well-behaved children and they’re always surprisingly popular with adults too!

The Grey Market, New Homes and Happy Christmas! So what is the grey market? No it doesn’t mean its winter and the skies are grey. We are valuing properties all the time and there are times when the owners don’t want to publicly market i.e the internet, but they would consider selling, and it is those properties that we say are on the ‘grey market’. They do tend to be the higher priced properties, although not exclusively. So if you have a specific requirement or dream home that you are looking for, do please contact me, as we have had the privilege of seeing some amazing homes. On the new homes side of our business, I have seen a couple of fantastic show homes in the last week. The first has just been launched at £3,450,000. Tucked away at the end of a cul de sac on the Bickley Park Estate, for that price tag you would expect something amazing and it doesn’t disappoint. It is one of the most impressive homes I have seen and I have been fortunate enough to see a good number of the best homes in the Chislehurst and Bickley area over the years. The second is the show house for the Hampton Grange Development which is on

the Chislehurst side of Bromley on the old Holy Trinity Convent site. With prices from £1,450,000 there is a collection of eleven detached 5-bedroom houses adjacent to beautiful parkland. Though I know every agent says this, you definitely have to see the show house to appreciate how nice these homes are, they certainly outdid my expectations. And finally a little tale: I had a client pop into the office today to pick up some details of a property we were marketing, yes people still come into estate agents! He was a charming gentleman and on chatting he told us how he had lived on the same street in the heart of Blackheath Village for over 70 years. He recounted the tale of when the circus used to come to town, it arrived by train and they unloaded the animals in the goods yard, now the station car park, and the animals were led through the village up to the Heath. Imagine the health and safety implications today! On that note it only leaves me to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Same Greenwich, new view The Royal Borough of Greenwich is currently undergoing extensive regeneration and evolving at a rapid pace. Barratt London’s Enderby Wharf, located in Greenwich, SE10, is playing a significant part in this advancement by not only providing new homes for the community but it is also opening up 200m of the Thames path walkway and refurbishing Enderby House, once home to Samuel Enderby, an ambitious maritime entrepreneur and explorer who founded a shipping company in Greenwich in the 18th century. The development will comprise 616 apartments with a mix of studio, one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments and duplexes (each with a balcony or terrace) stretching across metres of untouched river frontage, offering beautiful west-facing views towards Canary Wharf and the City. Launched in June 2014, the development has proved incredibly popular, with all one beds in the released phases sold. Greenwich is perfectly located for the busy Londoner who desires access to unique boutiques, rustic pubs, bustling historic markets, the high-flying life of the City with its various bars and eateries, and the West End for entertainment. Greenwich Market, popular for its market stalls and fantastic food, is located moments away, as are the National Maritime Museum and Cutty Sark, both of which are famous attractions, and the majestic 183-acre

Greenwich Park. Located ‘across the water’ are Canary Wharf and the City of London with their cosmopolitan feel, where you can enjoy fine-dining and cocktails after a day in the City. Enderby Wharf capitalises on all of these contributions and offers more. The development offers extensive leisure facilities, including the reinstated Grade II listed Enderby House and resident’s only gym. There is also planning permission granted for an International Cruise Liner Terminal and Hotel. change this to read; The development incorporates a ‘same Greenwich, new view’ theme which will see transformation of an industrial site into a stunning new project, with the opening of the Thames path for local residents to enjoy the far reaching views. Enderby House, a Grade II listed building built in the 1830s, will be revived and remain a primary feature of the development, blending the modern elements of 21st century London with Greenwich’s historic fishing and maritime precedent. Creating a striking juxtaposition for the area, each apartment at Enderby Wharf enjoys thoughtfully arranged layout, designed to adapt to the varying demands of contemporary lifestyles, which stands in contrast to the contextual history of the area. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide generous light, enhance the interior space and frame the enviable

waterfront views which many of the apartments will enjoy. In addition, residents will benefit from private landscaped gardens and an enhanced public realm along the river, together with our exclusive 5 year warranty, a car club and management of the development by Barratt London’s in house agents BRAM. Gary Patrick, Regional Sales Director at Barratt London, comments, “Enderby Wharf epitomises modern London living. The development captures both the culture and history of Greenwich, whilst equally reflecting London’s modern style. With its enviable location, transport links to the economic hub Canary Wharf, and host of amenities, we are expecting a strong interest from both owner occupiers and investors. We look forward to Enderby Wharf playing its part in the broader Greenwich regeneration.” With North Greenwich underground station under a mile away, the Jubilee line will deliver you into Canary Wharf in two minutes, London Waterloo in 11 minutes and Bond Street for the West End in 17 minutes, Enderby Wharf is very well-connected. Another modern transport attraction located at North Greenwich is the Emirates Air Line, which transfers you to Royal Victoria Docks, via a spectacular cable car ride, in just a few moments. Cutty Sark DLR provides overground links to London City Airport in 18 minutes for international travel. For car transport, the Blackwall tunnel is minutes away, providing swift access to the north of the river and beyond, while car parking (available with some apartments), as well as 24-hour concierge services, will be available on-site. From 8th December, 2014 to 12th January, 2015 the sales & marketing suite and show home will be closed. But don’t worry, you can still view the development from our temporary site at No.1 The Avenue, Devas Street, Bromley-By-Bow, London, E3 3LS. To book an appointment to view, please call 0844 811 4334. Enderby Wharf Christchurch Way, Greenwich SE10 0AG

Coats Coat - Investing in your winter coat is a smart fashion buy and a real winter wardrobe essential. In fact you’ll probably need more than just one coat to get through the season. The different fashion houses don’t appear to be as united about anything as they are about the dimensions of the coat. Solid shapes, generous volumes and strong lengths set the tone and give originally classic shapes, the XXL allure. This season make a statement in faux fur, print or bright and bold colours. Any length goes, from the maxi length military styled trench coat to the short boxy shape or try a cape this winter, perfect over chunky knit jumpers, for that country style look.

It’s a Wrap, in more ways than one… Weather-forecasters have warned that we shouldn’t be lulled into a false sense of security by the recent mild conditions and that we can expect a bout of extreme weather with heavy and persistent snow, freezing gales and sub-zero temperatures this winter! So wrap up… Staying warm is not directly proportional to the thickness of your clothes. Several layers of body conscious knits, plus a neck-warming scarf, can be as cosy as your favourite, chunky fisherman sweater. Layer-friendly fashion essentials are the building blocks of a solid, stylish wardrobe that will get you through even the coldest of cold weather. The combination of natural fabrics like silk, cotton and wool garments not only look great but feel good to wear. Winter accessories are the perfect way to give your look a new season update without splashing out on a whole new wardrobe. From hats and gloves to faux fur clutches and stoles, we’ve got everything you need for winter. Winter boots are one of those things that, come autumn, you (reluctantly) start thinking about - and now the weather’s turned, they’re a must-have. The ankle boot is the best shoe investment to make for the autumn/winter season chose from heels, wedges or flat biker style. If the weather is as bad as they forecast, knee high boots may be the order of the day. Gorgeous black boots are a winter style must-have, period. Wear your heaviest of sweaters, scarf, and hat, tuck in your trousers in to your boots for an ageless fashion statement. Bags, with the right arm-candy in tow, an outfit can be instantly lifted and refreshed. These are not your average everyday bags, these are the must-have, lust worthy bags we aspire to own and are on every woman’s ‘Santa’s wish list’.

Clever faux fur scarfs and collars have arrived this season and can be worn with most jackets and coats with the maximum chic and extra warmth at the same time. A sleek fedora streamlines an oversized coat and is more flattering than a woolen beanie. Belts – A fashion feature for this winter is the soft leather Corset-style Belt. Create the perfect hourglass figure by clinching in the waist with a thick belt is a favourite fashion trick. Try it with a sweater dress, chunky cable-knit jumper or fine cashmere polo. Leather goods – Nowadays it seems everyone is equipped with the latest technology from tablets to iPhones. Ensure your gadgets are keep safe and protected at all times with the latest designer leather goods for ipads, iphones, purses and oyster cards.

School Entrance Examinations – Preparation is Key

With the January school entrance examinations almost upon us, how can you best prepare your child? Entrance exams for independent schools, just like the grammar schools’ 11+ assessments, can be tough and getting your child into these top schools is a competitive business. As we all know, there is often a vast oversubscription for places. The exam cannot usually be retaken and gaining a high enough mark is often a major determining factor in securing a place. The leading academic and state schools in the area, such as Babington House (Independent 3-18), Eltham College (Independent 11-18), Bromley High (GDST 4-18), Newstead Wood (state grammar 11-18) and St Olaves (state grammar 1118) all have challenging entrance tests for their Year 7 entry and they all have highly selective Sixth Forms as well. As a parent, it is important to prevent your child getting too overwhelmed by the stress and worry of the exam process – keep calm. Visit schools in the area and ask them about how their entrance exams actually work. At Babington House, for example, it is possible to take assessment tests for entrance into Year 7 during a taster day while your child is in Year 6. This makes the whole experience less stressful and as the Headmaster, Mr Lello, said “it also gives us a chance to see the wider talents and gifts of our prospective pupils”. Babington, like most other schools, also have a single day when the entrance tests can be completed. When choosing a school for your child, it is important to keep a sense of perspective. Your child has several choices for schools, talk to them about the positives of each one so that they don’t feel the heavy responsibility of being accepted at their first choice school. Next comes the difficult question of how much to prepare. Some children are comfortable doing practice papers independently, but others may need more support. Focus on your own strategy, tailored to your child to achieve success. Babington House School, Grange Drive, Chislehurst, Kent BR7 5ES 020 8467 5537 www.babingtonhouse.com

Practice is crucial Ensure that all subjects are practiced – for instance, English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning – but divide attention according to strengths and weaknesses. Reward effort, not necessarily attainment, with small and frequent incentives. Do not over prepare, most private schools cover the test subjects in the lessons and give homework so your child is able to do well in these tests. Ensure your child practices timed papers in a quiet environment so they are comfortable with exam conditions. Encourage your child to read widely to increase vocabulary and help with written work. If there is an interview, prepare by making sure your child has several mock interviews with different adults. Prepare some current affairs knowledge in the week leading up to the exam; also the reason for choosing and wanting to gain entry to a particular school. Make sure that your child has a question ready so that, if asked, there won’t be an awkward silence. In the examinations, remind your child to read the questions twice before they begin to answer them. Don’t spend too long struggling with an answer – remind them to go back to that question at the end and check all their answers, if there is time. Above all, it is vital that you ensure that their preparation is as healthy and enjoyable as possible for all concerned. Good luck!

Eltham was quite the place to live in the 16th century and it’s still a great choice for families wanting more house for their money. Nicola Berry takes a closer look.

The childhood home of Henry VIII (now off Court Road) is something of a ‘hidden gem’. It may be hard to imagine, but from 1305 to the late 1500’s, Eltham Palace was an important royal residence. Initially home to the future Edward II, its famous ‘Great Hall’ was built in 1470 by Edward IV and Henry VIII spent much of his early life here. Once King, however, Henry favoured the more glamorous surroundings of the newly rebuilt Greenwich Palace and Eltham Palace began a slow decline, finally ending up as a barn on a gentleman’s estate (now Blackheath Golf Club). 1 In 1933 wealthy textiles heir, Stephen Courtauld and his wife Virginia, acquired the lease of the palace site. Planning regulations were obviously more relaxed in those days and the Courtaulds were able to build a fabulous Art Deco mansion. Thankfully, they incorporated the ‘Great Hall’ - then all that was left of the old palace except for the 15th century bridge in the garden - into their design. This amazing house is now in the protective care of English Heritage, who have just announced an exciting new restoration project costing £1.7 million. By next spring they hope to unveil a brand new visitor centre, shop and café in the former glasshouses, five new rooms and a multimedia tour to help visitors guide themselves around the house. They’ve also uncovered a very rare 1930’s ‘map room’ which for decades had been hidden under wallpaper, and have launched an appeal to raise the £25,000 needed to renovate it. 2 Court Road is also home to some of the most expensive houses in the area, many of which back on to the road’s other most famous resident, the Royal Blackheath Golf Club. Its origins are complex but it’s reputed to be the oldest golf club in the world. The beautiful, 18 hole course has hosted many tournaments and is famous for its array of trophies and medals, including the prestigious Royal Blackheath Spring Medal. Their elegant 17th century clubhouse, Eltham Lodge, makes a prestigious wedding and party venue.

3

So, what about modern-day Eltham? Well, the High Street is, shall we say, functional, but new investment has seen a number of unattractive buildings demolished to make way for luxury apartments. Simon Hughes, from Conran Estates, reckons that Eltham is actually “a well-kept secret”. He says that compared to prices in Greenwich or Blackheath, Eltham offers real value for money. Good schools and excellent transport links are also the reason why he thinks more young families are moving into the area. 3 bed semis in upmarket Eltham Heights are £450,000 whilst the larger, very desirable Corbett houses are half the price of similar properties in Blackheath at £550,000. 2 bed flats in Tarnwood Park are around £250,000. My final ‘hidden gem’ is the unusually named Well Hall Pleasaunce (meaning pleasure-garden), which is a haven of formal gardens, ponds and woodland. Well Hall was owned by Sir Thomas More’s daughter, Margaret Roper, and the 16th century Tudor Barn (now a popular restaurant) was once an outbuilding. The original house was demolished in 1733 by Sir Gregory Page, who built Page House in its place. The most famous tenant - and its last - was the author Edith Nesbit, who wrote The Railway Children and The Treasure Seekers here. 3

Finally, an article on Eltham would not be complete without mentioning the wonderful work of the Demelza Children’s Hospice, which is situated just off Eltham High Street. Their traditional Christmas Carol Concert is at The Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich on Thursday 11th December at 7.30pm. It’s an important fund-raising event for the hospice, which relies on donations to carry on its good work, and tickets are available for £12 per adult and £6 for children. www.demelza.org.uk

Peyton & Byrne What would you recommend as a good start to the day? Georgiana, manager of this new bakery on the block, Peyton & Byrne, suggested the breakfast muffin with apple, pumpkin seeds, carrot, courgette, poppy seeds, a gorgeous combination and really moist texture, a perfect morning starter. Served with an espresso and l’m ready for the day. The café offers a bright interior with plenty of room for buggies for mums to lunch and the post school home run for hungry tums. Really popular for lunches and the only place that has salad boxes for lunch, freshly made with seasonal produce, for the health conscious. Christmas will see hampers, gingerbread men and sweet treats, ideal for gifts or even a few selfindulgences. Go on, spoil yourself.

New Neighbourhood The all-day dining menu, starting from breakfast through to the evening, will utilise fresh, quality produce, lovingly sourced, with provenance at its heart. The focus of the menu will be heavily on meats cooked on a rotisserie, together with fish and meats on a large Robata Flame grill, with an interesting selection of small plates, complementary salads and side dishes. The menu has been thoughtfully created to be enjoyed with friends and shared in groups – making it ideal for grazing and sharing whilst whiling away the hours.

With panto season upon us, Greenwich Theatre has once again been transformed into a glittering fairy-tale world where anything can happen. This year, that means a young boy will climb a magic beanstalk to defeat a giant, with a lot of singing and dancing along the way. Theatre, I’ve always thought, can do two things. It can help us understand the world we live in, or it can transport us away from that world to somewhere else. Usually, shows fall somewhere in the middle. Pantomime is closer to the second model, taking us to a fantasy world, but even Jack’s magical adventure has a lot to say about courage and standing up to adversity. More traditional drama can relate more directly to our own lives but will usually have some element of fiction driving the story. There is one form of theatre, however, that comes closer than any other in its bid to show us the world around us. Verbatim Theatre is a form that is based on interviews with real people, with their own words used to create the final play. While some practitioners of verbatim theatre will add words, and some will edit interviews, fundamentally they will present to an audience a play formed of the very words that their interview subjects have used. Verbatim Theatre has surged in popularity in recent years, particularly after Alecky Blythe’s LONDON ROAD in 2011, a musical built from interview

transcripts which told the true story of a serial murderer at work in Ipswich, and which played at the National Theatre. This year, we teamed up with West Yorkshire Playhouse to commission a new play from acclaimed young theatre company The Paper Birds, a company already causing quite a stir with their verbatim work. The company created a show, took it to the Edinburgh Festival where it sold out and secured a string of rave reviews, and now we are preparing to bring it back to Greenwich in January. The finished play, BROKE, explores just what it means to live in debt, in a society that sees mortgages and credit cards at the heart of every day life, while the country itself exists in a state of enormous national debt. In Hamlet, Shakespeare’s tragic prince explains the role of theatre – it is, he says, “to hold as ‘twere the
mirror up to nature”. There can’t be a more accurate mirror than that offered by verbatim theatre, and BROKE is all the more challenging, funny and moving because of it. James Haddrell BROKE opens at Greenwich Theatre on 22 January 2015 Box Office 020 8858 7755 www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk

GLORIOUS GOLD Gold is the most eye-catching of all metals and its beauty is celebrated in the new exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery. The Rillaton Cup from the Early Bronze Age to a goblet made of gold and enamel in 1978 by George Benney, each item signifies a period in history. An Indian tiger’ s head from the house of Tipu Sultan, the 18th-century ruler of Mysore, who had it as his personal symbol, was acquired by Paul Storr and W. Seabrook who gave it later additions. Many of the paintings are associated with medieval monarchs whose work features gold haloes and backgrounds. The sovereign who commissioned gold in abundance was George IV whose items include one of only six books ever printed of the Ceremonial of the Coronation, and a massive tray, again one of only six, decorated by the royal goldsmiths with one of every badge of the Order of Knighthood to which the King belonged at the time of his Coronation in 1821. The exhibition is at the Queens Gallery at Buckingham Palace, London SW1 and runs in conjunction with Cairo to Constantinople: Early Photographs of the Middle East by Francis Bedford who accompanied the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) in 1862. An admission charge applies and both shows run until 22 February.

He is perhaps best known for the album sleeves he photographed and designed for 4AD (Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, Lisa Gerrard, etc.) under the name 23 envelope with his then partner, Vaughan Oliver. These have since been hailed by the likes of Catherine McDermot and Rick Poyner as among the most important designs of the eighties and early nineties. In 2000, after a successful career directing music videos (Black, David Sylvian, Robert Plant, The Beloved, etc.) and TV commercials (Volvo, Seiko, Co-op bank etc.) in both Europe and America through Limelight production company, he gave up commercial work completely in order to pursue his own photography. He has had one man shows in America and Japan, and has both photographs and album sleeves in the V&A collection.
