Peter and Madeline made the pilgrimage in aid of the charity, Music in Hospitals, and hope to raise £2,500. ‘Music has changed my own life, and I know the power it can have on people who find themselves in an alien environment dealing with the most difficult of circumstances.’ Peter Harris commented. ‘Working at BMI the Blackheath Hospital and having strong links to the local NHS I hope that the money my daughter and I have raised will be able to benefit the local south London community we serve and that music in hospitals will be able to aid in the treatment of people within our local community.’ To donate visit www.justgiving.com/peter-harris15

Hither Green Village & Lee
Area Focus
A look at Hither Green Village/Lee Conservation Area - by Nicola Berry
Tim Keeler
The word ‘community’ could have been invented to describe life in the area that runs from the shops in Staplehurst Road down to Burnt Ash Road. The Hither Green & Lee news blog lists no less than 12 different local societies and associations and even has a daily calendar of events and activities for children and adults. Some sound great fun such as the recent Hither Green Wine Club and Green Door’s Eurovision Supper Club (an evening of great food, wonderful wine and Eurovision live on a large screen). Beards anyone?
How did Hither Green get its name? There were several greens in Lewisham; one was called Hither (nearer) Green, the other Further Green. Where to live? In 1870 Lee was described as “a resort of merchants and wealthy families from the metropolis; and many handsome residences have been erected in Lee Park, Manor Park and Lee Road.” Add to this the attractive streets of Victorian houses that Archibald Corbett built after purchasing 278 acres of North Park Farm in 1896 and the area’s desirable housing stock was assured. James Nicol from Stanford Estates says that the close proximity of several ‘Outstanding’ primary schools is a deciding factor for many young families, as is the short commute to London. Attractive two and three bed cottages are dotted all over roads such as Ennersdale and Longhurst (£500,000 +), together with larger three or four bed terraced and semi detached houses in Manor Lane Terrace (£750,000+ ) and Micheldever Road (£1m +) respectively. There are also plenty of period, two bed conversion flats within walking distance of the station for £280,000 (rental £1,300). Transport: It’s an easy 15 minute train journey from Hither Green to London Bridge Station. Local landmarks: Generations of local children have taken their first steps in Manor House Gardens. On a hot, summer’s day the lake is a joy to walk around, whilst children love the excellent play area and tennis courts. At the heart of the Gardens is Pistachios In The Park, a friendly café, and a walled flower garden. The Friends of Manor House Gardens are an active group of volunteers who work hard to maintain the flower beds, and the annual Garden Festival (Saturday, 21st June, 12 noon – 9pm), is undoubtedly the highlight of the year. Overlooking the Gardens is Manor House Library, a Grade II listed, Georgian house which was once the home of the Baring family. It’s been a much valued local library since 1902.
Schools: Lee Manor Primary School has been rated as “Outstanding” by Ofsted, along with neighbouring Brindishe Lee and Brindishe Green. The three schools form a partnership serving the communities of Hither Green and Lee. St. Winifred’s is a popular RC primary school split across two sites in Effingham Road and Newstead Road. There’s also the voluntary aided Trinity Church of England School in Taunton Road, which is the smallest secondary school in the Borough with just 600 pupils. Not far away is Colfe’s, a well-regarded independent school which has a Nursery, Prep and Senior School. Zoom Nurseries, which takes babies from 3 months and has a dedicated baby unit, has recently been awarded “Outstanding” by Ofsted. Where to shop? Friends and Users of Staplehurst Shops (FUSS) keep this attractive parade of shops looking good. Vintage style abounds at coffee shop and florist You Don’t Bring Me Flowers, whilst Education Interactive is a real treasure trove of specialist maths games and puzzles including one which teaches children how to manage their finances/pocket money. Andrew Tapponníer, who runs Create, is a specialist in renovating and extending the local Victorian homes. He offers a one-stop service which manages the initial design right through to build and completion. Where to eat? The Station Hotel is, as the name implies, right by Hither Green Station. It’s a handsome building and serves great food and real ales with the added bonus of a courtyard garden. Hither Green Deli is the place for a very reasonably priced Panini. What’s New? Archibald’s coffee shop has just opened in Manor Lane. Next month our area focus will be on Blackheath Standard. If you have a favourite shop or business that you think deserves a mention then email editor@meridian-magazine.co.uk before 13th June.

Lewisham Gateway A more vibrant better connected, Lewisham Confluence Place
New Homes
The initial site preparation work has now been completed at Lewisham Gateway, the single largest development within Lewisham town centre. Work on the repeatedly delayed £250m regeneration scheme, which will transform the area around Lewisham station, will be getting underway this month. The scheme involves the removal of the roundabout opposite Lewisham’s railway and DLR stations, to be replaced by a new road layout and a new development, which will make it easier for pedestrians to get back and forth from the stations to the town centre. When complete, Lewisham Gateway will include up to 800 new homes, designed by award-winning PRP Architects, shops, restaurants, bars and cafes plus new leisure facilities. The creation of new green space is in the shape of Confluence Place, a park where the Ravensbourne and Quaggy rivers meet, and a town square opposite St Stephen’s Church. Lewisham Gateway is being brought forward in a series of phases. The first phase is now underway, and involves the redevelopment of land close to the stations. Until very recently, this land was also the location for the bus terminus, now relocated to a purpose-built facility on nearby Thurston Road. This phase will see the construction of what is currently known as ‘Building A’ (marked with an ‘A’ on the site plan right) along with landscaping to the adjacent area to create Confluence Place. ‘Building A’ comprises two blocks (25 and 15 storeys) providing 193 new homes, along with ground-floor shops and restaurants/ cafés. A further building which forms part of this phase (marked with a ‘B’ on the site plan right) is still subject to detailed planning consent, with discussions due to commence shortly.
8 | www.meridian-magazine.co.uk
This phase also includes changes being made to the roads and rivers. As much as possible will be done to minimise lane closures, diversions and delays during the construction period. All bus services will continue to run, although there are minor changes to some routes passing through the area. For this regeneration to be effective the roundabout will need to be removed and the road network relocated around the site. This will allow the creation of an exciting new development at the heart of Lewisham town centre, creating new jobs and homes for local people. Map of Masterplan corresponding to numbers below: A

Diary of an Estate Agent Mortgages, Open days and a footnote about Leases!
As you may have seen in the news, Mortgage lending criteria changed on the 26th April and the new Mortgage Market Review (MMR) rules came into play. This will affect all future lending in the UK. How will this affect you? Lenders’ focus is no longer simply on multiple of income. Their attention is more focused on the individual’s “affordability” rather than their income. In order to access your affordability, lenders will need to see evidence and proof of all outgoings including costs of such items as gym membership, satellite TV subscriptions etc, all of which could reduce your borrowing power. So it is now even more important than ever before to check how much you can borrow before you set your heart on your next home. We work with Hays Financial Centre at our Blackheath office so please contact us if you would like to speak to one of their advisers. Open days have been getting a lot of press recently and are not everyone’s cup of tea. The reason why so many properties are being marketed this way is that it is easier for the owner in
Lee
terms of only having to tidy up for, hopefully, one day. It also means that if a number of people are interested, buyers are asked to submit a best and final offer. So, good for the owner, but frustrating for those that are not successful. I have heard that some agents are just letting prospective buyers come along say between 10 and 12, without an appointment so you can end up with loads of people in the house at once. At jdm we try to make the process a little more civilised by giving everyone a time slot, however you do get some overlap as some clients on the day are early and others late, but hopefully it’s not such a bun fight! I do think as the market becomes a little less frenetic we will start to see fewer open days, which will please buyers. Finally, a request: should you have a leasehold property, with a lease of less than 85 years, do seek some advice on extending it. Selling a property with a shorter lease can become a real headache. I will expand upon this next month.

No Job Too Big Or Too Small…
Interiors
If you can’t face home repairs or improvements find a man who can Summer is a great time to focus on the exterior of your home, as well as your lawn and garden. Painting the exterior of the home sounds simple enough but if you don’t have a head for heights…
When buying a home, most people probably first think of the financial responsibility. Don’t forget, however, about the time and labour that home ownership also requires. Just like regular oil changes for your car keeps your engine running smoothly, keeping up with regular home maintenance tasks will keep you from future headaches and wasted money. The typical man takes six-months to get around to all the ‘little jobs’ in the house, new research has revealed. A study commissioned by Homebase, found a lack of time, knowledge or enthusiasm is often the reason for the failure to carry out little tasks such as repairing squeaky floorboards, hanging pictures, even replacing lightbulbs. Other jobs such as touching up paint and mending leaking taps regularly wait six-months or more. Even small repair jobs can seem quite daunting and over time can lead to more serious problems. Knowing how to tackle small jobs is key to staying on top of things, and can mean they take less time to put right. It is understandable that many people are unsure how to fix certain little problems that crop up in home and the best way is to seek advice and practice. Some information is vital, such as knowing where the stopcock is situated, so next time the tap washer perishes and your sink or bath is overflowing, you can at least turn the water supply off. The potential cost of a project can put property owners off too, but fixing problems early means they won’t cost as much as many of us would expect. Remember, always obtain at least three quotes for any work required, and the cheapest isn’t always the best in the long run.
Researchers also found 41 per cent of homeowners put off their home improvement task because they didn’t know how to tackle the job. And then there are those that start a project that might seem at first to be uncomplicated, only to need the help of a professional to complete the job or even start again from scratch. However, if a job needs a professional, don’t try to cut corners especially if it involves electricity, which needs to be signed off by a qualified NICEIC approved electrician once the work has been completed. Larger projects may need Building Regulations approval, especially if it’s a new home or involves almost any new building work (such as a new wall), or structural alterations, such as a loft conversion. Projects that are exempt from Building Regulations include: porches (not exceeding 30m²); car ports (open on two sides and, again, less then 30m²); conservatories (having a floor area of less than 30m², have at least 75% of the roof and 50% of the walls glazed with a translucent material; and maintain the existing walls, windows and doors that separate it from the main house, with no new additional openings created); most detached sheds and greenhouses (under 15m² floor area, or under 30m² and at least 1m away from the house). Not only do you have to comply with the regulations, you also have to be seen to be doing so. Without the inspections and final sign off, you could be fined up to £5,000 and/or forced to re-do the work. You’ll also find it nigh-on impossible to sell the completed house - lack of compliance will emerge in local authority searches carried out in the buying process. So in general, if it’s structural work, it needs approval. If in doubt, check with your local authority website, or give their Building Control department a call. Nannette Fielding

Sydenham Garden
Red House
Culverley Green
Red House, the only house commissioned, created and lived in by William Morris, founder of the Arts and Crafts movement, is a building of extraordinary architectural and social significance. When it was completed in 1860, it was described by Edward Burne-Jones as ‘the beautifullest place on earth’. There is a simple garden and orchard surrounding the house.
Culverley Green, The gardens here form a triangle at the junction of three roads and were originally laid out as part of plans for an early Edwardian estate, now a conservation area. The planting scheme comprises informal groupings of shrubbery set in a lawn. The spring bulb-planting scheme has continued with the planting of more bulbs in the autumn of 2013 and some raised beds.
Red House, Red House Lane, Bexleyheath, DA6 8JF. Sat 11am–5pm, Sun 11am–5pm. Activities: Tearoom and shop. House can be visited for an additional entry fee (National Trust members free) after 1.30pm. Guided tours of the house from 11am to 1.30pm by prior booking only.
Culverley Green, Culverley Road, Catford SE6 2JZ. Sun 2–5pm. Activities: Garden fête on Sunday afternoon. Teas and homemade cakes and jams, local honey (from surrounding roads). Plant stall, local crafts for sale, raffle, face-painting, games for small children and music.
Sydenham Garden is an award-winning charity providing gardening, nature conservation and creative opportunities for the well-being of local residents. It provides a place where local people, particularly those coping with ill-health, can gain confidence and self-esteem through work and community. The garden includes a pond, nature reserve, raised-bed vegetable growing area, Victorian-style greenhouse and planted beds. Sydenham Garden, 28A Wynell Road, Forest Hill SE23 2LW. Sat 10am–5pm, Sun 11am–4pm. Activities: Refreshments (drinks, cakes), plant and art and craft sales.
The Secret Orchard
Winsford Gardens
Once the private gardens of Winsford House, the garden still retains many original features, including ornamental shrub beds, fruit trees, rose gardens and lawns. The gardens were open as a public park but neglected until local volunteer group Penge Green Gym breathed new life into them, transforming the site into an exciting, attractive community space and wildlife garden. Winsford Gardens, Croydon Road or Garden Road, Penge SE20 7RN. Sat 11am–4pm. Activities: Children’s crafts including making bird feeders, bug hotels and a treasure hunt, Plant sale. Lawn for picnics. Informal guided tours of the garden with Penge Green Gym volunteers. Refreshments stall.
Charlton Manor Primary School
Hidden away behind Charlton Manor Primary School is a secret garden. A number of years ago it was derelict and overgrown. Today it’s a haven that includes raised beds, vegetable plots, fruit trees and vines, a large heated greenhouse, wildlife area with pond, bird hide, chickens and an observation beehive. Charlton Manor Primary School, Indus Road, Charlton SE7 7EF. Sat 10am–5pm, Sun 10am–4pm. Activities: Tea, coffee and homemade honey cake made from the school’s own honey. Pond-dipping. Talks and explorations of the observation beehive. Tours of the garden with staff available to answer questions.
The features of this garden include a soft fruit area, a newly planted urban orchard with heritage pear varieties, apples and cherries, and an espalier wall planted by Café Crema and the London Orchard project. Visit the wildlife pond, meet the ducks and look around the greenhouse and potting shed (which has a small reference library and lots of gardening magazines). The Secret Orchard, New Cross Road, New Cross SE14 6AF. Sat 10am-5pm. Activities: Fully licensed vegetarian and vegan café. Local honey and homemade cakes and lunches on sale, Fairtrade and organic teas and coffees. Freshly laid duck eggs from our Indian Runners (subject to laying mood). Come and feed the ducks. This riverside garden is run by and for the neighbours of Ballast Quay. It was a wharf until the 1960s. For the weekend it will have sculpture on sale by blacksmith Brian Greaves and Kevin Herlihy, who designed and made the goat memorial.

Tour de France 2014 is coming to London With the Giro Tour of Italy just finished at the end of May Stage 8 of the The Pearl Izumi Tour Series at Canary Wharf on 5 June, and the Tour de France starting in early July it’s going to be quite a busy cycling time. This year the first three stages of the 2014 Tour de France take place in the UK from 5-7 July. During the first two stages the riders will circumnavigate Yorkshire and London will again become the focus for the last stage. The stage starts in Cambridge and finishes in London passing such landmarks as the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace to a spectacular finish along The Mall. Let’s all hope it’s a home stage win for Mark Cavendish and that he will be wearing the famous Yellow jersey as the tour leader when the race leaves the UK that evening for France. The Tour is one of the most exciting free sporting spectacles on Earth. For more information visit www.visitlondon.com/things-to-do/event/28528358-tour-defrance-grand-depart-2014-third-stage During this time Cycles UK stores will be entering into the spirit by dressing windows and having some special Tour purchase lines available in store and on line Visit www.cyclesuk.com Happy cycling – John Malcolm Cycles UK with stores in Greenwich, Orpington, Kent and Essex visit www.cyclesuk.com
For those who do get along to the event there are four jerseys that you must keep an eye out for. The Yellow - General classification jersey is for the overall race leader; The rider who has completed the race in the shortest time wears this.
The Green - Points classification is better known as the Sprinter’s jersey and is worn by the rider who at the start of each stage has the greatest number of points. Points are awarded daily to the rider who is first to reach the end of the stage or a determined place during any stage of the Tour. The Pokka Dot – Mountains classification points are awarded to the rider who is first to reach the top of each categorised climb. Points are also awarded for riders who closely follow the leader up each climb. The number of points awarded varies according to the hill classification, which is determined by the steepness and length of the particular hill. The White - Young rider classification is restricted to the riders that are under the age of 26.

Swimming is a great form of all-round exercise Swimmings ideal if you want to be more active and stay healthy, whatever your age or ability. Regular swimming can reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 Diabetes and stroke. It can also boost your mood and keep your weight under control. Swimming is a lifelong skill that could save a life. If you can’t swim, it’s never too late to learn. Most pools cater for a variety of tastes and abilities, such as womenonly classes, parent and toddler groups, and lessons for different age groups. Before you start For most people, swimming is a safe and effective form of exercise. If you’re worried about an existing health condition, see your GP before you start swimming. Don’t worry if you’re afraid of the water or panic when you think about the deep end. Beginners’ lessons focus on building confidence in the water. Wearing a pair of goggles is a good idea to avoid the stinging sensation caused by chlorine in the water and to see where you’re going under water. Starting out The best place to get started is at your local pool. You’ll find information on classes for different age groups and levels, women-only sessions, timetables and prices. To find pools near you, use Find services: sport and fitness or contact your local authority. Most pools offer adult-only beginners’ lessons, which focus on building water confidence and improving your stroke.
Recommended physical activity levels Adults (19-64 years) should do 150 minutes every week Older adults (65+ years) should do 150 minutes every week If you’re unsure about starting lessons, ask if you can watch a class or two to get a better idea if it’s for you, or ask to speak with one of the teachers. A 30-minute session of moderate to vigorous-intensity aerobic activity at the pool on one or more days a week will count towards your recommended weekly activity. As a guide a 60kg person burns in 30 minutes: Running (6mph): 300 calories Tennis (singles): 240 calories Swimming (slow crawl): 240 calories Cycling (12-14mph): 240 calories Aerobic dancing: 195 calories Fast walking (4mph): 150 calories

Parenting News
The rapid rise of the ‘Uber-mum’! ‘Super-mum’, the very phrase immediately conjures up exhausting images. It’s also over-used and places unnecessary pressure on mothers and their expected roles in society. So what exactly is a ‘Super-mum’? SM’s are expected to raise perfect, adorable and well-mannered, healthy children, effortlessly juggle the demands of family life, cook like their life depends on it, look fabulous at all times and maintain that gorgeous size 8-10 figure. Just how is it possible to sustain or obtain this godly ‘Super-mum’ status? Gradually, more and more mothers are waking up to the reality that this existence is simply not possible in the real world. There is an emergence of women who seem to be a little more discerning about the ‘real’ parenting and lifestyle deal. The mother who has less of a ‘try-hard’/’must-do’ attitude and one who is more motivated by a gentler balance in her life which enables her to truly engage with life and enjoy parenthood at the same time. She doesn’t conform to any one category or feel pressure to be this or that. Move over ‘Super-mum’ and all hail the rapid rise of the ‘Uber-mum’! Lisa Boughton, Director and Co-Founder from Angelfish Consumer Market Research Agency www.thisisangelfish.co.uk stated: ‘’Uber-mums’ are savvy and resourceful, making the very most of their precious time to find a healthy balance between work, family and self. We are finding that many of our market research respondents are actually stay-athome-mums who contact us to boost their family income and make extra money by taking part in our paid-for market research groups’.
It’s estimated that some 9,000 new foster families will be needed by the end of this year to cope with the number of children needing care

Education News Round Up
Education
Focusing on Personal Development Focusing on the importance of personal development for our wellbeing is not a new trend or phase, indeed the Greek Philosopher Aristotle noted that this leads to ‘human flourishing’ or ‘living well’. Personal development is all about learning who you are and what you can do. Being exposed to as many experiences as possible in a school setting allows a child to build self-awareness and self-knowledge in a protected environment. Eltham College is proud to develop well-rounded individuals; the wealth of extra-curricular activities on offer and the level of participation by our pupils was recognised recently in the Independent Schools Inspection. Their report states: ‘Pupils are excellent learners at every stage, showing a willingness to work on their own initiative and displaying positive attitudes in class. The range and levels of participation in extra-curricular activities are extensive; pupils develop exceptional skills and are able to use their many talents.’ At Eltham College, our aim is to educate within a Christian environment, to encourage personal integrity and consideration for others, and to promote community service in both the local and wider world to create better mutual understanding. The spiritual awareness, moral awareness, social development and cultural awareness of our pupils are all described as excellent by the inspectors: ‘Pupils are tolerant of each other’s different backgrounds, they behave in an orderly fashion, running clubs on gender equality and ecology in response to their own concerns; the house system enables pupils of all ages to mix together and many assume leadership roles within activities, such as directing and stage managing plays.’
Budding Engineers and Physicists from Bromley High School come face to face with a Nuclear Collider! Recently sixth form students from Bromley High School had the opportunity to visit and attend tours around CERN (the European Organisation for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland. Head, Louise Simpson, commented: ‘A large hole in the ground in central Europe might not be everyone’s top choice for a weekend destination, but our budding engineers and physicists clearly had a fantastic and very valuable time at CERN. The opportunity to see the Large Hadron Collider in the flesh was inspiring for them all and will have had a huge impact on their approach to their studies. The trip, which coincided with the Organisation’s 60th anniversary year, was designed to supplement the studies of the Physics AS and A2-level students, while branching out and introducing to them the ways in which the basic principles of Physics that they were learning in class formed the basis of significantly more advanced science research.
Over the last ten years, universities have also been following guidance to provide a process to reflect upon learning, performance and/or achievement and to plan for their emotional, educational and career development. The school inspectors commented on the high levels of personal development of our pupils, which will give them solid foundations for the rigorous requirements of university and future careers. ‘Senior School pupils achieve an exceptionally high level of personal development. Their responses in discussions and in their self-assessment on their reports demonstrate a sophisticated level of emotional maturity.’ The key message to our community and from the inspectors is clear. One should not judge a school on its examination results alone – personal development is the key to future confidence and success. Successful schools should provide opportunities for children to discover themselves and build those soft skills, which are crucial in the world beyond. Paul Henderson, Headmaster, Eltham College.
Parachute Regiment Drop Into Bickley Park Four soldiers from the Parachute Regiment visited Bickley Park School to help the boys understand about life in the modern British Army. The visitors comprised a Captain, a Sergeant Major and two Sergeants. The soldiers had been involved in conflicts in Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan. A lot of what they spoke about was the battle to win hearts and minds in conflict zones. Sergeant Walker spoke about how the army were involved in community building projects in the Middle East, such as drilling wells to provide accessible fresh water supplies for local people. The soldiers spoke about the huge diversity within their working lives. Sergeant Walker used to be part of the Red Devils parachute team and was involved in displays all over the country.
‘All the girls really enjoyed seeing physics in action and linking what they learn in the textbook to real life. They all had an amazing time!’ Johan Viljoen, Head of Physics, Bromley High School.
Over a dozen Bickley Park School teachers and parents, including the Headmaster, will be undertaking tandem parachute jumps on June 7th to raise funds for the Parachute Regiment charity, which supports injured soldiers and the families of those killed or injured in conflict zones. The event will involve 70 participants and is intended to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Arnhem and D Day, two battles in which the Parachute Regiment played a major part.
The trip gave great insight and inspiration to the sixth-form physicists looking to pursue STEM-field careers, and was a very rewarding experience indeed. To find out more about what we can offer your daughter please visit us at our Open Morning Saturday 4 October, 9.30 am 1.00 pm or contact admissions@bro.gdst.net.
Boys at Bickley Park School are marking these important anniversaries and the centenary of the start of World War I in a series of events, which include meeting a D Day veteran, hearing a remarkable escape story from Singapore when it was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and a talk about World War I by Bickley Park old boy, Anthony Seldon, Headmaster of Wellington College.

Some Summertime Wines
Food & Drink
The light dishes and delicate flavours of summer call for crisp and lively wines that won’t knock you out for the whole afternoon. Here are some of our ideas to enhance your summer table. Paella and Rosé d’Anjou Paella has not always been the seafood extravaganza beloved of sun-seeking tourists; it was traditionally a way of combining available ingredients, most notably hare. This version combines tiger prawns, chorizo and chicken and in combination with the delicate spices you need a light and delicately fragranced wine to lift the ingredients and not overpower them. This rosé from the lower Maine valley, with its hot salmon pink colour brings vibrancy to the table but delicacy to the palate with a refreshing kick of citrus acidity adding extra zing to the next mouthful of paella. Rosé d’Anjou Domaine des Flines £10.50
BBQ
Bruschetta and Pissaladière with Alsace Pinot noir Bruschetta and its Provençal cousin Pissaladière can, like Paella, present a smorgasbord of flavours so need a wine that is flexible and supple enough to cope with contrasts of taste and texture. The pinot noir has pleasing fruit aromas and is well-balanced and refreshing and not too dry, offering a great contrast to the sweetness of the tomatoes and the saltiness of the anchovies or chorizo. Alsace Pinot noir Domaine L. Hauller 2012 £11.50
Nothing says British summer time like wheeling out the barbecue between showers. Here is a whistlestop summary of our suggestions: grilled lamb chops or kofte with a burgundy pinot noir, chicken with Chablis or a Sancerre, salmon or tuna steaks with an Alsace Riesling, steak or beefburgers with a Cotes-du-Rhone. For accompaniments - the Muscadet would work brilliantly with a minty tabbouleh or the Rosé de Loire with pistachio and date couscous.
Joe le Snaxi and Crozes-Hermitage A Sloppy Joe burger re-imagined as an amuse-bouche of our own invention. The Crozes-Hermitage is light but structured and flavoursome enough with hints of pepper to stand up to the heat of the chilli. Crozes-Hermitage Les Perdigolles 2011 - £11.50
Waldorf salad and Muscadet aged in chestnut barrels This wine is a one-off. Pascal Drouard; one of 4 winemaking brothers at the head of this vineyard, has had the inspired idea of ageing his best Muscadet in locally-made chestnut barrels. This brings a delicious nuttiness to this Muscadet balancing the characteristic pearl on the tongue and adding another dimension to a light and refreshing wine. The lightness and acidity lift the yoghurt and mayonnaise dressing; the herbaceous notes complement the salad, whilst the chestnut echoes the walnut perfectly. Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Fief de l’Ancruère £9.90

Too much to do? Pressed For Time Can Help.
London and the South East is a hard water area. Fit a Twintec water softener and start feeling all the soft water benefits:
Pressed for Time is a small, family-run, cleaning and ironing business based in Sundridge Park, which is owned and run by Anne Say. The Company started life some 14 years ago providing an ironing service for busy people, but it wasn’t long before Anne began receiving requests from customers to clean their homes as well. It seemed that many preferred the comfort of using a local company who they knew and trusted, rather than relying on the services of an individual. To get the business off the ground, Anne spent three years working alongside her team of cleaners, which gave her the chance to develop the bespoke level of service that Pressed for Time now offers. “I wanted to provide my clients with the same luxury standard of finish that they would expect when staying in a five star hotel. This means beds turned down, toilet rolls neatly folded at the ends and towels perfectly arranged in the bathrooms.” Anne uses all her own products and she and her staff are experts when it comes to caring for high specification bathroom and kitchen surfaces. Marble, granite, stainless steel... they all receive the same care and attention that leaves them polished to perfection. Before taking on a new client, Anne will visit their home and speak to them personally about their requirements. Some people want cleaners on a regular basis (thanks to such a high finish, Anne says that many customers only require a twicemonthly visit), whilst others want a one-off ‘deep clean.’ Anne then allocates a team of two or three staff, so that they become familiar with the property and its owner. “I am a firm believer that a better standard of cleaning can be achieved by a team who work together, rather than one person working on their own. This is particularly true in larger houses, simply because it’s physically difficult for one person to work at full speed for three or four hours. It also means the job is done in much less time.” Prices reflect the higher level of service and range from between £45 - £55 for a two bedroom flat, £80 for a four bedroom terrace/semi and a £100 plus for a large five bedroom house. To date, Anne has customers in Greenwich, Blackheath, Chislehurst, Bromley and all areas in between. Anne is the first to acknowledge that the success of her business depends on her staff, which she describes as a close-knit team. The Company is fully insured and has full public liability, which is particularly important when it comes to the growing number of requests she receives to clean offices and communal areas of flats. However, whether the job is big or small, each receives exactly the same high level clean. To ensure standards are maintained, Anne regularly carries out spot-checks on her properties and is always available should there be any problems. New customers can either call or visit the shop in person to ask Anne for a quote; she can normally get a team round to clean in a matter of days. Greenwich Open Studios This year’s Greenwich Open Studios art trail is going to be one of the most interesting yet. Twenty-three professional artists, all with different visions and styles, are opening their houses and studios to the public. Our acronym GOS is well known. We have been exhibiting every summer for 32 years. While GOS’s membership has changed over the years its ethos remains the same. All of us work and live in Greenwich and we organise collaboratively. Our work for sale but is not affected by the percentages taken by galleries and dealers. You don’t have to buy but if you want to you can get some remarkable bargains. However the most important thing about GOS is that it offers a great summer experience. There are few better ways of spending a weekend summer afternoon following an art trail of studios looking at top quality work and talking to artists themselves. We are open 14-15 and the 21-22 June. Go to gosartists if you want to find out more. John Bangs. Greenwich Gallery: Season of Street Photography – On Our Streets. From July The Greenwich Gallery will be holding a season of photography based on a single theme. June at Greenwich Printmakers sees two new featured artists. Until 15th June is Nikki Braunton whose prints are snapshots, moments and observations about life; things that happen to her or people she knows. They express everyday thoughts and feelings, which are comical but often have a darkness and sadness to them, sometimes exorcising her own demons. See Nikki’s picture in our advert below. Libby Carreck follows until 29th June with her beautiful botanical etchings (shown here) and magical woodland birds. Her love of colour and natural forms is combined in her intricate depictions of flowers, shells and landscapes. The Greenwich Market gallery has a fantastic range of original hand-made prints and cards, and you can find out how an etching or a linocut is made from the artist on duty.www.greenwich-printmakers.co.uk. 1a Greenwich Market SE10 9HZ. 020 8858 1569.

Turner Contemporary offers an exclusive UK viewing of the first exhibition to consider the significance of colour during Piet Mondrian’s early career. Mondrian and Colour explores Mondrian’s (1872-1944) practice, tracing the painter’s use of colour from figuration to early abstraction. Bringing together around 50 paintings by the artist from the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and other collections in Europe and the USA, the exhibition will demonstrate that Mondrian’s abstract works were not simply mathematical exercises in form but also expressed his search for a new universal harmony. Mondrian and Colour until 21 September 2014. The Rendezvous, Margate, Kent CT9 1HG.

A SKIPPING EXTRAVAGANZA IN THE PARK! The Big Dance festival returns this summer with lots of events around the UK, and something extra-special is happening in Greenwich. As the Big Dance Hub for South East London, Greenwich Dance has commissioned choreographer Jorge Crecis to create Through & Out: Skipping Extravaganza, a largescale, free outdoor performance of dance and rope skipping in Greenwich Park on Saturday 12 July, as part of the Royal Greenwich Festivals. Hundreds of dance-skippers, including professional dance artists and a local community cast from across South East London, will unite in electrifying motion. An immersive audio experience with an original soundtrack will take you into the heart of the action as audience and performers converge in one epic event in the iconic surroundings of Greenwich Park. Kat Bridge, Artistic Director at Greenwich Dance said: ‘We are delighted to be producing one of only 16 national Big Dance commissions this summer. This is our most ambitious projects yet in terms of the number of performers and it feels great to celebrate South East London in this way as part of a fantastic summer of cultural events for The Royal Greenwich Festivals.’ If you are interested in being part of it, visit greenwichdance.org.uk to find out more.

Greenwich Theatre’s Artistic Director, James Haddrell In the first week of May a major row broke out in parliament and the Speaker of the House of Commons had to call for restraint, but the cause of the outburst was not the economy, or education, or the health service – nothing that you might expect. It was about the proposed reburial of a single human skeleton, found two years earlier buried underneath a car park in Leicester. The remains, it was thought (and it has now been proved) were those of King Richard III, the last of the Plantagenet Kings and the last English monarch to have died in battle. Thought to have been buried under a church in Leicester, long since lost, Richard died at the Battle of Bosworth, defeated by Henry Tudor – a battle which brought a new line to the English throne. The discovery in Leicester sparked a bitter debate, finally resolved by the High Court in May this year, about whether Richard should be buried in Leicester where he died, or be returned to York where he grew up. The debate may finally be settled, with a high court ruling that he should be reinterred in Leicester, but the excitement around the discovery for historians and theatre lovers alike has not abated.

ONGOING
Arguably Shakespeare’s most popular history play, King Richard III is one of Shakespeare’s most powerful villains, a true gothic figure, his twisted body serving as a sign of a twisted personality. Shakespeare’s Richard describes himself as ‘Deformed, unfinished, sent before my time / Into this breathing world, scarce half made up’ and elsewhere as a ‘hunchback’. The discovery of his skeleton, proved to be his thanks to a DNA match with a family descendent, demonstrated that Shakespeare’s description was far more that simple poetic license. With a badly twisted spine, which today would be diagnosed as scoliosis, Richard would certainly have seemed deformed to his contemporaries – and the sight of the twisted skeleton somehow brought Shakespeare’s character vividly back to life for anyone who loves the play.

Whatever memorial is now raised to him in Leicester, and however the City of York decide to honour his birth, one of the greatest reminders of his reign will always be Shakespeare’s unforgettable play. Later this month when the play is revived here in Greenwich by Custom/Practice, the knowledge that Richard has been rediscovered, and that his reign truly was characterised as much by his iconic twisted body as by his violent rule, is sure to give that description of a “Deformed, unfinished” king an even greater power. Richard III plays at Greenwich Theatre for a strictly limited run from 20-22 June. Box Office 020 8858 7755 www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk

Belshazzar Trinity Laban opera returns to Blackheath Halls in July, with Belshazzar, one of Handel’s most colourful, if rarely staged, works. Based on the Biblical account of the fall of Babylon and the subsequent freeing of the Jewish nation, Belshazzar is musically rich and contains universal morals on excess, the abuse of power, faith and tolerance, offering parallels with political situations throughout the world today. Belshazzar features some of the best opera students the UK can offer, led by directing sensation Emma Rivlin. The conductor is the award winning Nicholas Kraemer, fresh from his recent successful staging of Belshazzar in Norway. www.trinitylaban.ac.uk

Stunning New Homes Launched at Blackheath Quarter
Berkeley Homes is presenting buyers with further opportunities to own a home in highly sought-after Kidbrooke Village with the launch of Merlin Court. The latest release within Blackheath Quarter will provide 132 new homes in a building overlooking the beautifully landscaped Cator Park. Merlin Court comprises contemporary, individually designed, one, two and three bedroom apartments with high-specification, luxurious interiors and views of luscious parkland. All homes come with either spacious balconies or terrace areas.
themselves surrounded by green open space; in total, the village has 136 acres of open space, made up from the established Sutcliffe Park nature reserve, the newly created Cator Park, and numerous green pathways between the buildings. Cator Park will offer residents a number of outdoor recreational activities all year round as well as providing an idyllic setting for summer picnics with water features that run into a green river that flows through the village.
Within this collection, a select number of three bedroom apartments will feature an additional room, ideal for use as a home office, allowing owners to benefit from flexible working. Those that wish to work from home will also have access to private working spaces in a business suite located in Blackheath Quarter Clubhouse. The unique suite, complete with boardroom, affords Blackheath Quarter residents with the opportunity and freedom of working from home without the distractions of creature comforts – perfect for those with young families who want to spend less time commuting and more time with their loved ones.
Blackheath Quarter is one of four neighbourhoods which make up the Kidbrooke Village community, along with Meridian Gate, Kidbrooke Village Centre and City Point – all arranged around parkland and open space. The 270-acre site, a £1 billion regeneration scheme, is considered one of Europe’s most ambitious housing projects and second only in the UK to the Olympic Village. The former government body Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) has described Kidbrooke Village as “an exemplar for sustainable suburbs with social and environmental sustainability at its heart”. When complete, Kidbrooke Village will provide more than 4,000 new homes, and a central square lined with shops and eateries.
Blackheath Quarter Clubhouse is an excellent space which combines work and play. As well as having access to executive business facilities, residents have the opportunity to relax by the pool, blow off steam in the gym or watch a film with the family in the private cinema room.
Whilst Kidbrooke Village already boasts a number of amenities on site, including a health centre, primary school, community centre, as well as a Sainsbury’s Local, coffee shop and other retail facilities – the neighbouring picturesque village of Blackheath additionally offers a wealth of restaurants, pubs and attractive shops.
However, if residents need to commute into central London, Kidbrooke railway station runs regular overland services into London Bridge in just 15 minutes and London Victoria in less than 30 minutes. Merlin Court residents will also find
The Merlin Court apartments will launch on Saturday, 14 June. For more information about Kidbrooke Village, visitwww.kidbrookevillage.com or call 020 8150 5151.
