Blackheath Village

LOVE LOCA L

The heart of the community From the turning on of the Christmas lights and the shops opening extended hours…it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Blackheath Village. Blackheath celebrates the start of the festive season with activities and events for all the family on Saturday 3 December with *Blackheath Village Day. Last year saw the day start with a parade by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, followed by many events, including: Santa’s grotto, a children’s fairground, lantern making, exhibition choirs, musicians and family activities, cumulating in the switching on of the Christmas lights. But Christmas is more than just retail therapy on a manic scale. Blackheath Village offers a range of independent shops that should have the perfect present for the most difficult recipient on your Christmas gift list; saving you from a trip to the crowded West End. Blackheath Village also has a very lively community, which engages with the local residents and enables them to come together at times of need

with fund raising and charity events, as well as celebrations. The Exchange is an inspirational space in the centre of Blackheath with a café, a community library offering a range of services from kids’ reading classes to coffee mornings, adult learning sessions and even the opportunity to learn another language. This unique community hub has gone from strength to strength in the last two years, with a footfall of over 140,000 a year. The Conservatoire was founded in 1881, by local people who wanted to put art and music at the heart of their community; and for over 134 years it’s done just that. Generations of locals have come here to study music or art, including some very famous people like Kate Bush, Gary Oldman and Jools Holland.

Last year, one of their previous students, Eska, was nominated for The Mercury Award for Best Album of the Year. Over the last three years, The Conservatoire has successfully undergone a radical re-imagining of how to best serve the modern and diverse community that they are now part of. Key to this has been transforming from a classic charity model into a social enterprise. The Conservatoire now dedicates most of their fundraising efforts, and the proceeds that are earned from their music and art courses, to fund a number of social outreach projects in the community, especially for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Blackheath Village certainly has that ‘village’ feel, in every sense of the word. * For updates visit www.blackheathvillageday.co.uk

Need Space Add Value Outgrowing your home and need more space, forget moving - make the most of what you have by extending your house up, out or down or simply declutter a room. There are lots of reasons to extend, whether you want to create more space, add value to your home or just love the area in which you live. The increasing cost and hassle of moving combined with uncertainty in the property market makes staying put an attractive prospect. A loft conversion is the easiest way to get an extra bedroom and bathroom and it’s not particularly disruptive, either, as most of the work can be done from outside. The key thing is to make sure access to the loft is easy and that the conversion fits the rest of the house, rather than looking grafted on. You will have to strengthen the floor joists, which will raise the floor level, so make sure you leave yourself with sufficient ceiling height to stand up in. Invest in a loft conversion and you can add an average 12.5 per cent to the selling price. Build a conservatory extending your living space is always a good idea, but the danger is that your conservatory ends up looking like something just bolted on the back. Make sure the conservatory matches the style of the rest of the house. Don’t make it seem as if it’s in any way separate, with its own entrance, for example. You can enhance the feeling of space and flow by installing the same flooring throughout your downstairs living area. It leads the eye on and ensures that the conservatory feels part of the rest of the house. A conservatory can add around 7 per cent to the value, while a full-blown extension adds 11 per cent.

Get rid of the garage and turn it into living space. The fact is, 90 per cent of British garages don’t contain a car, they are a wasted asset that could add value. Creative ways of untilising every inch of space on the smaller scale with clever storage can transform a room and give the sense of more space, less clutter. Bay window seats provide another great opportunity for extending your storage space, the majority of period Victorian and Edwardian homes have bay windows. Building a storage cupboard into this space with integrated seating area will provide an elegant storage solution creating a beautiful clutter free space to relax in. One space-saving trick is to use the area under a staircase, including the steps themselves as storage by fitting drawers into the side of your staircase.

Storage Solutions: Seat with storage baskets This pine seat, with two banana leaf baskets underneath, has been handmade at Owen Pine and Oak in Orpington. This original piece offers a number of storage solutions and could be used in a number of rooms: a seat in the hall with shoes in the baskets; a bench in a kids room and storage for toys; storage on the landing for linen. Furniture such as this can fit into any house and is incredibly versatile. At Owen Pine and Oak such furniture can be made to measure and finished in a number of waxes and Farrow and Ball colours. The Revival of Camden Grove Tucked away in the heart of Chislehurst High Street, you’ll find Camden Grove: a quant, yet prestigious neighbourhood of just 26 Victorian terrace houses, half of which overlook Chislehurst Golf Course. Known for it’s annual street parties and great community vibe, this road is coming back to life. Each house has it’s own personality and character, much like the residents you’ll find behind each wellpresented front door. And just a stone’s throw away from Chislehurst Ponds and the Royal Parade, the location is unrivalled.

After

Meridian asked local builder and property developer, Danny Montila (owner of number 2 Camden Grove), who recently completed a total restoration on the property, about the whole process… Before

Why did you buy this house? Finding Camden Grove was like finding a hidden gem; although the house isn’t that large - it was full of potential. Our vision was to create space and storage whilst simultaneously creating a bright contemporary family home - as well as putting many original features back into the property, such as the period fireplace that was sourced, sandblasted and now a focal point in the living area. As I operate an established development company, Montila Developments it was easier to achieve than most.

What role did you and your wife take on?

I project managed the build alongside my wife Evie, who interior designed this unique yet classic home. Together, we make a quite a team - changing what was an ordinary home into a breath-taking contemporary living space. You can see the passion and love that has been infused into the home.

How would you sum up the restoration of this home?

The finishing touches are what give the property the wow factor and if done well, can add £1000s on to your home. Planning the interior design at the beginning of the project actually saves money in the long run and selecting everything with care and attention allows you to get that ‘magazine’ finish. As you can see, Evie has a natural talent and enthusiasm for this.

After the success of restoring and refurbishing number 2 Camden Grove what comes next?

Our house has literally become a showroom, an example of how you can transform and create space without losing the all-important character of the house. In fact, Montila Developments have gone on to develop many more houses on the same street.

A breakdown of the build...

3 1: Over sized bi fold doors lead out into the low maintenance garden. The tall narrow conifers give the appearance of a wider garden. 2: Open plan living room with Fired Earth parka flooring. 3: Creating more space with a loft conversion, which consists of a double bedroom and en-suite bathroom

1

In order to bring the front back to its original glory, we removed the porch, replaced the fan light and the front door with a traditional style hardwood door that we had sprayed by R Whites decorating services, in a classic Farrow and Ball duck egg green. A black and white tile pathway at the front of the house added to the original character, also three up-lights highlighted the yellow stock bricks around the bay window. The 1980s white render was removed without damaging the bricks underneath and our restoration craftsman did an amazing job of restoring and re-pointing the front of the house with a labour of love and a hand chisel. The carpets were stripped out downstairs and Fired Earth parka flooring was laid throughout. We removed the bathroom from downstairs and re-created a new bathroom upstairs, and then made the downstairs open plan. Oversized, bi-folding doors lead out into the garden to make the whole kitchen area feel light and spacious. An additional roof lantern with Victorian cornicing, made by

hand, on-site, by a local craftsman, Miles and Leigh added to the period look. A reasonably priced kitchen from Howden’s was modified with special added features such as: cooper door handles, marble worktops, exposed brick splash backs, hand painted cabinet doors in Farrow and Ball colours, LED under counter lighting and a breakfast bar designed and handmade in Zinc, added to the contemporary feel. Creating more space with a loft conversion, which consists of a double bedroom and en suite bathroom. Under floor heating was installed in the bathrooms and kitchen and fitted wardrobes were a must for this property in order to maximise space without the clutter. Throughout the house, traditional wooden plantation shutters made and fitted by local company ‘Love Blinds’ completed a clean, uncluttered look. The garden backs onto Chislehurst Golf Course and we wanted to have a low maintenance back garden but still stylish, so we went with a look that would allow us to give the appearance of width by choosing tall narrow conifers - otherwise known as Italian spotter trees.

165 Years and Counting

To celebrate 165 years of practising law in south London, local Solicitors Grant Saw recently arranged an event at the prestigious Trafalgar Tavern on the Greenwich waterfront, for a number of local property agents and surveyors. It gave an opportunity for discussions about current market conditions, especially following the Brexit vote. Whilst there has been a growing trend by legal services providers to attempt to “commoditise” and provide legal services via unqualified lawyers, perhaps overseen by a “lawyermanager”, Grant Saw Head of Conveyancing, Maria Lati is convinced that this is not what clients in Greenwich and Blackheath want, and this was borne out in discussions during the evening. “Most agents were telling us that clients want what we offer: legal services provided by qualified lawyers so that every client is dealing with an experienced solicitor or legal executive who is a “property specialist” and not just a ‘conveyancer’”, Maria told Meridian. With the Government set to trigger the process leading to Britain’s exit from the European Union, the mood of the agents seemed cautiously optimistic. “The weaker pound continues to make London an attractive investment option, which offsets the uncertainties of Brexit and compensates for the new higher stamp duty rates on second properties”, one agent told Maria. With the party in full swing, Maria explained: “Whatever the future holds, clients in this area want a personal service and for their lawyers to empower them to make informed choices. A client is not ‘just a file’, they are a person and we want to build a relationship throughout their lifetime so we can provide legal services that

Advertorial feature

meet their needs. Whether that’s buying their first home, making a will or setting up a business through life’s changing circumstances such a disputes, separation and end of life care.” The practice of law has changed a lot since the days of quill pens, and before typewriters and telephones interrupted the peace of the working day. Grant Saw has recently been investing in IT and online resources to improve quality of work, speed and efficiency. The firm jealously guards its four quality accreditations “because”, says Maria, “they set you apart from your competitors”. She is proud that the conveyancing department achieved second place as Small Conveyancing Firm of the year at the Law Firm Services Awards in 2015. Maria believes that law firms need to focus on being part of the local community. That is why the firm sponsors Blackheath Rugby Club, events at Blackheath Halls and nominates a local charity every year (this year it is Demelza Hospice Care) and it sponsors some local school events too. As the event drew to a close, the firm’s lawyers reflected gratefully on the large and loyal client base that the firm has maintained in Greenwich and Blackheath over the years. Maria mused: “It’s easier to stay in touch with our clients now with our client newsletters being emailed out quarterly or available online. And I do wonder what Mr Saw, back in 1851, would have made of the new instant communication “pop-up” form on our website?!”

NHS Dental Care – dispelling the myths Smile Impressions is expanding, and is delighted to offer 350 new patients the opportunity to have NHS dental care before Christmas 2016, at our Lee practice.

The long-established, family friendly dental practice at 54 Micheldever Road in Lee, is dental home to three generations of local families. Smile Impressions Lee celebrated its 50th birthday this year, which provides an opportune moment to remind residents of Lee, Blackheath, Hither Green and Lewisham that high quality NHS dental care, delivered by a friendly and experienced team, in beautiful relaxing surroundings, is available right on their doorstep. For several years now, they have enjoyed caring for their new and long-standing patients, both on the NHS and privately. The NHS versus private dentistry question has fuelled many a dinner table debate and been the subject of numerous conversations in their patient lounge. This article attempts to provide some clarity about the choices and options you have with Smile Impressions – and there are many! Smile Impressions are committed to providing gentle quality care, which puts you and your loved ones at the centre of everything they do. They want, as much as you, to avoid reparative treatment, and the anxieties that go with it, so they place great importance on their role in helping you to prevent problems in the first place. Their philosophy is simple...“We provide dental treatment for existing problems to a high standard, then work with you on a preventive approach which

keeps you and your family smiling for life.” NHS dentistry offers the full range of functional dental care that is clinically necessary to keep your teeth, gums and mouth healthy. The Smile Impressions group has two practices in south east London – Smile Impressions Lee (SE12) and Smile Impressions Blackheath (SE3), and both are proud to hold NHS contracts.

NHS care does not include cosmetic treatments to improve your appearance that are not clinically necessary. With the technological advancements in cosmetic and advanced dental care, we have seen a growing demand for cosmetic and advanced treatment options such as tooth whitening and adult tooth straightening, to enhance patients’ appearance and confidence.

NHS care in general practice is free if you are:

Smile Impressions’ unprecedented growth prompted the opening of their new two-chair dental centre, Smile Impressions Blackheath at 257 Shooters Hill Road SE3 8UN this year, to deliver private advanced and complex services, including implants, complex root treatments, cosmetic dentistry and advanced gum care treatments.

• Under 18 • Under 19 and in full-time education • Pregnant or you have had a baby within the 12 months before treatment starts • Able to prove another reason for your entitlement to NHS dentistry, as set out on the page titled “Who is entitled to free NHS dental treatment in England” on the NHS Choices website: www.nhs.uk

For all other patients entitled to NHS care, patient charges fall into three bands: • Band 1: £19.70 for asic examinations, X-rays, scale and polish. • Band 2: £53.90 – All treatment in Band 1, plus fillings, extractions, root canals, and denture relining • Band 3: £233.70 – All treatment in Band 1 and Band 2, plus crowns, bridges, and dentures.

In addition to full and weekly boarding, Farringtons is able to offer flexi-boarding in order to help with the busy lifestyles that many families have. 25

Flexi-Boarding is popular with students who have a long journey to school and want to attend before or after school clubs. It is also the perfect solution for pupils who want to prioritise studying around the exam periods or prepare prior to moving away to university. Families can opt for an occasional sleepover at school or choose to board on a regular basis of two or three nights a week. Set in twenty five acres of beautiful parkland in Chislehurst, Farringtons has excellent facilities and offers a wide range of sports and extracurricular activities.

New Head of School St Matthew Academy is delighted to announce the appointment of Miranda Baldwin as the Head of School. Miranda explained that she is thrilled to be at the academy and that she is passionate about working in partnership with the children, staff, parents and management board to continue to develop an exciting, happy and successful school. With over 20 years teaching experience as a Maths teacher, and more recently as Deputy Head at an all through school, Miranda stated that she has high expectations for this academic year and beyond. “We aim to work together as we become a great school that sits firmly in the heart of the community, and one that we can all be proud of. The staff share my belief that our pupils should be given every opportunity to achieve academically and to discover, develop and fulfil their spiritual, intellectual and personal potential – all children will continue to be encouraged to let their light shine in all that they do.” “With the outstanding school site and resources available, I believe the academy has a solid base from which it can grow even further. With changes already introduced to rapidly improve and enhance the teaching and learning, we shall continue to review our practice to ensure that it remains at the highest possible standard.” Come and see our Reception Class. Open days are on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 November 2016, from 9-10am.

With most pupils proceeding to higher education, academic standards are high; each pupil is encouraged to strive to reach his or her full potential. Academic success is due to small classes, dedicated staff and supportive teaching, ensuring each pupil receives the individual attention needed. Academic achievement, as well as the all-round development of the individual, is of prime importance at Farringtons. Full, weekly or flex-boarding is available to pupils at Farringtons in Years 7 – 13. For further information, please visit www.farringtons.kent.sch.uk.

Buenos Aires Café in Greenwich – the perfect place for a cosy night out this winter. The Buenos Aires Café site in Blackheath Village had seen a lot of restaurants come and go in previous years. But when the local Argie favourite arrived, just under a decade ago, they quickly established a loyal following – for their wonderful steaks and chicken, pizza and pasta, but most of all for their excellent, personable service and family-friendly atmosphere. It’s something they’ve recently and successfully replicated in their new Greenwich restaurant, which occupies a prime location and provides the same special food and service but in a bigger space that means they can seat more hungry customers. To do this, the enterprising guys from BA Café built a fantastic Orangery onto the back of the

restaurant, creating a space that’s bright and airy in summer and surprisingly cosy and warm during winter. There’s nothing quite like sitting here on a dark evening amid the twinkling lights while enjoying a sumptuous Argentinian steak with their inimitable homemade fries – or, even better, one of their unique mixed grills, with steak, chicken, homemade chorizo and much more. Join them in Greenwich as the nights begin to draw in… Buenos Aires Café 15 Nelson Rd, Greenwich SE10 9JB 0208 858 9172 buenosairescafe.co.uk

An Argentinian New Year’s Eve Buenos Aires Café Greenwich is a great place for a party – join them on New Year’s Eve for a glass of champagne and a fabulous 3-course set menu for just £50 a head.

A Locale Dish! Meridian gets Locale’s Executive Chef, Paolo Barone to take a break in his busy schedule to tell us about himself and his work at Locale, plus what we can expect on the menu for Christmas… Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background before working at Locale? I have spent the last 26 years being a chef and 11 years with Locale Restaurants as Executive Chef. I worked in several Italian restaurants (in my home, Italy) before moving to London in 1994 where I worked with Locatelli before joining Locale Restaurants from its start, in 2005. I’ve been attracted to working with food since before I can remember! In Italy, food has a very important role within the family. From when I was very young I was always be in the kitchen, watching my mother and helping her out. I decided then, that when I grew up, I wanted to become a chef.

Do you create the menu on your own or with a team? And what influences the changes to the menu, i.e. seasons, seasonal produce? I normally create the menu myself with some inspiration that I obtain from the rest of the team here at Locale. I love to use seasonal produce, which influences each menu to reflect the time of year. I try and look for the current trends in food to keep our menus fresh, exciting and a chance for our guests to branch out and try something a bit different.

What is the Christmas menu like this year? Any new twists or is it traditional, what do Locale diners like? Is there a good atmosphere in the restaurant over Christmas? Our Christmas menu this year has a bit of both: traditional and also a few twists to keep it exciting. We always have a traditional roast turkey with all the trimmings and a few new choices like, braised lamb shank with roasted beetroot and mash potato. Our guests like to have some choice as by the end of December, everyone is tired of turkey! The atmosphere is the restaurant during the Christmas period is always busy and fun, with lots of staff parties, family celebrations and guests really enjoying themselves!

Are the clientele mostly local or do they come from further away? Does the reputation of the chef bring customers in? Our guests are mostly locale but we do have people who come from all over for family celebrations, parties or just to meet up with friends. I hope that my reputation brings guests in, I love food and love being a chef!

What’s your favourite dish that you like to eat? My favourite dish at the moment is the Florentina T-Bone steak, imported straight from Tuscany. This 1kg steak of Chianina beef is a classic dish that you find in Florence and has a stunning flavour when cooked in our josper (indoor barbeque that heats up to 500 degrees celsius) Like I said, I love food!

You will be busy working at Christmas so will you get some time off and will you spend it with family? I will be working most of the Christmas season, as we are so busy it is tough to get time out. But, each year, I do have my parents come from Italy to join me for Christmas Day. I really enjoy this tradition that has been happening since I came to London. I still get to celebrate with my family and feel that I have worked hard throughout December.

INSPIRED BY THE YOUNGEST OF THEATRE MAKERS

BY JAMES HADDRELL, ARTISTIC & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF GREENWICH THEATRE This month at Greenwich Theatre we are set to celebrate some of the borough’s very youngest theatre makers, in two very different ways. First, we present a welcome return for the Shakespeare Schools Festival. Over the course of a week twenty schools, both primary and secondary, will bring half-hour adaptations of Shakespeare to the main stage at Greenwich Theatre, and this week I went to visit one school company – Linton Mead Primary School in Abbey Wood – during their rehearsals. Meeting children preparing to perform is always an amazing experience. I have worked in theatre for almost 20 years and it is easy to forget how magical it is, to get distracted by funding issues or building maintenance, but seeing how excited these children were about performing reminded me just why this industry is so magical. The experience of telling stories, live on stage to an audience, is a very special one – and it is even more special when the story you are telling has come from one of this country’s greatest playwrights. Shakespeare has a bad reputation among many people who think his plays are over complicated, that his language is difficult to understand or that his plots are outdated, but for these children tackling a Shakespeare play with original Shakespearean language wasn’t intimidating or difficult, it was fun. In theatre, that kind of fun is infectious, so when audiences come to see four different short versions of Shakespeare in a single night I know they’re in for a treat.

This week we also sent Steve Markwick, the musical director on our annual pantomime, to visit some of the children at Charlton Manor Primary School and teach them a song, but this was no ordinary music lesson. In the days ahead we will be returning to the school to record the pupils singing that song, and that recording is destined to find its way into this year’s production of Peter Pan: A New Adventure, our all-singing all-dancing new pantomime adventure. Working with children on projects like this is hugely rewarding, but it also plays a very important role in ensuring the future of this industry. Theatre brings millions of pounds into the UK economy every year, but with so many new leisure activities and so much new media vying for attention, there is every risk that theatre in the future will fade away and disappear. However, if children are engaged and excited by theatre at an early age, there is no reason why audiences shouldn’t get stronger and stronger as the years go by, and no reason why the UK shouldn’t continue to be the world theatrical leader that it is now. EMMA HAMILTON SEDUCTION AND CELEBRITY Emma Hamilton was one of the most famous international celebrities of her time and her life is the ultimate costume drama. Now largely remembered as the woman who captured the heart of the nation’s hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson, Emma was an extraordinary woman in her own right.

Emma Hart as Circe c.1782; George Romney 1734–1802; Tate, Bequeathed by Lady Wharton 1945; Photography © Tate, London 2016

Her story is one of female power and achievement in a man’s world, against all odds. Born into poverty in 1765, she rose to be a muse for famous artists, an influential ambassador’s wife, a European cultural icon and Nelson’s mistress – before facing prison and dying in destitution. Emma Hamilton: Seduction and Celebrity traces her spectacular career from rags to riches and back again through over 200 objects, great paintings by George Romney, Sir Joshua Reynolds and Sir Thomas Lawrence, and heartfelt letters between Emma and her lovers. The exhibition also explores the obstacles and social barriers for a woman of her time in the public eye, many of which still resonate today.
