Team Building
De Vere’s Devonport House in King William Walk became the HQ of the recent team building exercise as a group of local businessmen and women got into teams and took the Greenwich Challenge. All in the name of a venue re-launch party for clients old and new. A clever way of introducing newly appointed General Manager, Kate Fletcher, and Director of Sales, Alexandra Hartley to loyal customers, as well potential clients and showing them what Devonport is capable of in terms of functions and training packages. The day ran in conjunction with Blue Hat, the team building specialists, who suggested one of their most popular packages for this event- a rib boat ride on the Thames teamed with a High Tech treasure Hunt in teams around Greenwich Village. The activity was a great way to get to know the area and discover how many fantastic attractions
are located so close to the venue. When the winning team had been announced back at Devonport everyone tucked into a fantastic BBQ in the private courtyard followed by drinks and networking into the evening. The 30 attendees included Neighbours - Royal Museums and University of Greenwich, plus some of our regular business users Barclays, Ernst & Young and Credit Suisse to name a few.

Second Year Running
Charlton Park Riding for the Disabled Association has been chosen as Greenwich Sainsbury’s Local Charity of the Year for the second year running! Members of the public voted for the charity and the group just can’t believe their luck! “We’re all just so happy to work with Greenwich Sainsbury’s again! Their team have been so kind and generous to us and we have benefitted so much from their help over the past year that we’re thrilled to have another year of support!” says Kat, the RDA’s instructor on a Thursday. Last year, Sainsbury’s part-funded the group’s latest addition - Tiny Tim. They also rounded up staff from almost 20 of their regional branches to help the charity for the day, assisting with riding lessons and sprucing up the facility in Charlton Park. Well Done!

Local History
M
any of the key characters in the history of England have lived on or around the River Thames. In 1929 the MP John Burns once famously described the river as “liquid history”. Choosing as our starting point the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich the site of the mixed-use development by Berkeley Homes comprising of one of the biggest concentration of Grade I and Grade II listed buildings converted for residential use and the new Woolwich Crossrail station which is under construction. This 31-acre site was established as an Ordnance Storage Depot in 1671 and known as the Warren. An ammunition laboratory (the Royal Laboratory) was added in 1695, and a gun foundry (the Royal Brass Foundry) was established in 1717. By 1777 the Arsenal had expanded to 104-acres enclosed within a brick boundary wall constructed by convict labour. In 1805, during the reign of King George III, at the King’s suggestion, it became known as the Royal Arsenal. By this time, Woolwich was already a busy military centre, with the Woolwich Dockyard to the west of the Arsenal. The Royal Military Academy had been originally based at the Royal Arsenal but it moved to Woolwich Common in 1860 and is now a residential development, retaining much of it’s splendid architecture. The Arsenal was a renowned centre of excellence in mechanical engineering, with notable engineers including Samuel Betham, Marc Isambard Brunel and Henry Maudslay employed there.
“The St Lawrence is water, the Mississippi is muddy water, but the Thames is liquid history” MP John Burns , 1929
In 1886 workers at the Arsenal formed a football club initially known as Dial Square after the workshops in the heart of the complex, playing their first game in December that year on the Isle of Dogs. Renamed Royal Arsenal and known as the Woolwich Reds, the club entered the professional football league in 1893 and later became Arsenal F.C., having moved to north London in 1913. Now on the site of Dial Square is the popular Dial Arch pub and restaurant with historic photographs of how it used to be. At its peak during WWI, again the Royal Arsenal was extended and employed more than 80,000 people. The expansion was such that in 1915 the Government built the 1300-home ‘Well Hall Estate’ at Eltham to help accommodate the workforce. For those that want to find out more the Military Museum, Firepower and the Greenwich Heritage Centre are based at Royal Arsenal. From Woolwich Pier you can take the river cruiser to The O2 passing through one of London’s most striking landmarks, the Thames Barrier. The world’s second-largest movable flood barrier with its distinctive stainless steel piers, it spans 520 metres across the River Thames and has been keeping London safe from floods since 1984. At Greenwich Peninsula you can disembark and climb over and across the roof of The O2, 52m above ground. The
spectacular 360 views of the capital will be well worth it. For a different kind of experience fly across the Thames on the Emirates Air Line cable car and stop off for a visit to The Crystal, a landmark building from the electronics powerhouse, and it serves as Siemens’ flagship hub dedicated to urban sustainability. Inspired by London’s Crystal Palace, which showcased the newest technologies of the Industrial Revolution back in 1851, the new Crystal showcases the latest sustainable technologies. The centre is located right next to the Emirates Air Line on the Royal Victoria Dock. Following on from the Greenwich Peninsula at North Greenwich the river sweeps back and you can take a leisurely stroll along the Thames path
stopping off at the Cutty Sark Pub on Ballast Quay. A Georgian free house since either 1695 or 1795, depending on whether you believe the sign outside or the writing in the coloured glazed panes in the front door, this hostelry was converted to its present state in the early 19th century and refurbished earlier this year, and offers a respite for tired legs or to quench a thirst. A short distance away is Trinity Hospital Almshouses founded by Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton. A board near its entrance reads: “Since 1617 it has provided a home for 21 retired gentlemen of Greenwich.” The hospital was rebuilt in 1812 in its present Gothic style, and is still in use run by the Mercer charity. Not far from there is the Trafalgar Tavern built on the site of the Old George Inn in 1837. This stunning late Regency building boasts splendid bay windows with elegant balconies and columns and the interior has an historic elegance. Outside, the specially commissioned statue of Lord Nelson casts an eye over the river. On a warm afternoon music escapes from the open windows of the Trinity Laban students as part of the student cohort of Greenwich University, which has settled into the Old Royal Naval College after the Royal Navy moved out. Apart from the University you’ll find the Painted Hall with its refurbished interior, newly unveiled, and the Chapel renowned for its classical concerts. Not forgetting the Old Brewery, with its bespoke beers and lobster nights in the vaulted restaurant next to the Tourist Information Centre and Discover Greenwich Centre. Standing magnificently in the crest of a glazed wave is The Cutty Sark Tea Clipper, the fastest sailing ship of her day. Restored and offering a taste of more than tea to those that board her. While the Greenwich Foot tunnel offers the perfect view of this part of Greenwich, and is well worth the walk to Island Gardens where you can stand and gaze as Canaletto had done when he painted the Greenwich Hospital c.1750-2. Deptford and Greenwich, are rich in Naval tradition and maritime history. The working wharves here are nearly an extinct species. Instead they have become the new homes for those that desire to live close to the river such as New Capital Quay. A new village of 980 homes will be built by 2014 at Deptford Creek overlooking the Thames by the developer Galliard. The peninsula site occupies a commanding position on a bend of the river and has huge historical significance. In 1513 Henry VIII built his first and most important royal dockyard here; it’s where Tudor ships Mary Rose and Golden Hind were constructed and where diarist Samuel Pepys worked as clerk to the Navy Board; where Queen Elizabeth I knighted Sir Francis Drake and where Tsar Peter the Great of Russia spent three months learning the art of shipbuilding in 1698. Later the dockyard was acquired by the East India Company, then by the General Steam Navigation Company, which ran passenger and cargo ships to the Mediterranean. At the end of August a flotilla of Tall Ships will sail between Woolwich Pier and Greenwich, a fabulous sight only to be bettered by the planned River Thames Regatta next summer. Something for us all to look forward to.

Sweet Dreams... Decorating your child’s bedroom needn’t be a nightmare
By Valerie Breese
A
s children reach school age decorating their bedroom becomes a lot trickier. Not only does the average child own enough toys to stock a small toy shop, but also hordes of clothes, books, school equipment and general stuff they won’t part with. Their room has to multifunction from being a place to sleep to everything from a social club, study area, play room, craft workshop and hideaway. Plus, they will almost certainly have strong design ideas of their own and will want to be consulted before you reach for the colour chart.

Follow a few basic rules and you should be able to come up with a comfortable, practical room that you both love. Young children have amazing imaginations. Watch your children playing to get inspiration for making their room fun. Think bed with drapes to make a den, fit a plain wall with foot and hand-holds to make a rock face, sling a hammock across a corner to transform the room into a pirate ship. For major bits of furniture, like beds and wardrobes, steer clear of teeny versions they will outgrow in a couple of years. Go for a classic
style, and buy sturdy, quality items that have some hope of withstanding the frankly improper use your children will subject them to. Chosen carefully, furniture bought now could last until you send them off to college. Even if the room is for one child, think about putting in bunks anyway. They will be really useful for friends to sleep over or if you want to stick a sibling in their room when Granny comes to stay, but they also make excellent dens and adventure playgrounds for young kids. If you go for a single bed, think about a practical cabin type (with space underneath for a desk, ideal homework station) or invest in an under-bed truckle for sleepovers.
solution at the window if you value your sleep. A blackout roller blind in a neutral shade will see them through to adulthood, and you can add different drapes to pretty it up as the décor changes. A dimmer switch is a good idea for getting the mood right for the bedtime routine and providing a soft night light if they need it.
Opt for plain walls that can be decorated with vinyl cut out shapes that just peel and stick or coloured shelves or storage. Pick a colour or theme and run with it. Use bed linen as part of the theme, which is inexpensive and can be easily changed for a different design or colour in the future. Children of this age group are still prone to the ‘get up at dawn’ routine, so get a serious blackout

The heart of Chislehurst is, today, a quaint but sprightly centre full of high-end fashion boutiques, and unusual shopping opportunities. There is a range of excellent restaurants in the area; you can expect some of the finest dining in south east London, from Indian to Italian. The high street, complete with duck pond, still has the atmosphere of a small village. The pubs are old and timbered inns with lots of space and plenty of character. Just up the road is a large open space of Chislehurst common, providing a much-needed grassy expanse amongst all the wooden groves and treelined streets. This display of metropolitan sophistication and leafy splendor reveals just some of Chislehurst’s charm.

Adding a second bathroom or en-suite can increase the value of the home by up to 10% and will often deliver twice the value of its work.
Jim Buchanan of Beautiful Bathrooms has been in the bathroom business for over 40 years, and offers his top tips for buying a bathroom for all budgets. Buy the best quality you can afford - you don’t have to compromise on quality, even if you are on a tight budget. Always look around a showroom - you can look and feel, and you have experts on hand to answer any of your questions. Opt for a bathroom style that will last for years to come. For our older customers consider installing a modern-looking bathroom, which discreetly includes all the facilities you’ll need as you get older, such as grab rails, seats and accessible
showers rather than baths. Be very wary of buying online, in my experience the Internet and bathrooms don’t mix. Avoid bad experiences, with wrong parts and smashed products turning up or not arriving on time – especially if you’ve hired a plumber for the day with nothing for them to fit. Buying from a reputable company does pay off. There are big name brands who will fit your bathroom, but won’t be there to support you if there are any problems later on. Having a bathroom fitted properly by a professional plumber is just as important as choosing the right suite. Beautiful Bathrooms, www.beautifulbathrooms.net 0800 107 2111, 76-78 Upper Wickham Lane, Welling DA16 3HQ.
DESIGN SERVICES
It is not just about the quantity; it is also about the quality. Potential buyers are looking for high quality, modern features, such as shower enclosures rather than shower curtains or outdated over-bath screens. The perfect space for adding a bathroom could be hiding in a corner that has never been considered before. Even the smallest spaces can provide a sumptuous shower area with the right know-how.

Gardening
A Garden to do List Valerie Breese shares her 10 must-do jobs for August
F
ollowing on from a record breaking July for good weather, August is usually one of the hottest months of the year - making watering essential. Try to use grey water wherever possible, especially as water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer. August is traditionally holiday-time, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden while you are away.
Gardening for bees Adrian Thomas, author of RSPB Gardening for Wildlife: A Complete Guide to Naturefriendly Gardening, gives his expert advice on how to create a bee-friendly garden. It’s hard to go wrong with geraniums - something small like Mavis Simpson at the front, something bigger but compact in the middle like Geranium x magnificum. With your lawns encourage clovers - red or white - to flower on your lawn, and spread the love for bees across a much larger area of the garden. Heathers are sure-fire winners. Something like Erica carnea will grow on most soils and provide excellent early and late season nectar and pollen. It’s hard to beat the the Viper’s Buglosses (Echium family), which produce spires of flowers. Echium ‘Blue Bedder’ is really easy to grow, or if you want drama, try 8 feet tall Echium pininana in sheltered areas. Make sure you grow some herbs because so many are great for bees, such as chives, sage and lavender. It’s very easy to forget trees for bees. If you’ve only got a small garden, single-flowered cherry trees are hard to beat and look great, and for a large garden, Norway Maple hits the spot. Take action and download the free information booklet, 20 things you need to know about bees. Help cover Britain in wild flowers and help bees in your neighbourhood with a Bee Saver Kit. www.foe.co.uk
Enjoy your garden… Timber Decking has experienced a boost in acceptance as a way to improve the look of houses, gardens and to get the best out of your property. Including timber decks in garden designs is a unique and elegant way to enhance the garden and to create enjoyable outdoor space. By integration of features such as wood planters, lighting or outdoor seating, timber decks can become even more individual and interesting. Wooden decking is a relaxing place to sit or to lie. Not too hard but very clean. It is also very practical as it does not only increase the value of your property but it can also turn unused outdoor space into a pleasant area that invites you to enjoy, to relax and entertain family and friends or it is just an attractive place for dining and for children to play. Well-designed outdoor decks are strong, weather-resistant and durable and require little maintenance. Well-planned timber decking designs can extend your living area seamlessly into the outdoors and enrich the appearance of your home. Wooden decking can create a relaxing atmosphere and give you a sense of holiday feeling during the summer months spent at home. Noel Anderton, Landscape One Design Ltd, www.landscapeone.co.uk

ou only have to run a Google search to realise how many mini cab ‘companies’ there are in the capital, and pick up a paper to see how many people have a bad experience. So when you next book a cab, who is out there that you can trust? When it comes to reliability and professionalism, family run cab firm RoyalBorough Cars have kept local residents on the move for the past 8 years; be it through the contracts they have with local schools, hotels and the o2 (their sister company Arena Cars are the official mini- cab service for the o2) or their regular clients who rely on them to get from A to B. Safety First: Owner and local cabbie favourite, Mark Lazarus, alongside his partners Martin Thapa and Prashidha Pradan (pictured), realise how important it is for their clients to feel safe, especially those travelling alone, or the young or the elderly. So Mark vetted each of his 50 drivers personally and has ensured that each driver is CRB checked and has BTEC Level 2; in addition, each car is tracked and monitored. After being in the business for over 30 years, Mark knows what makes a good cabbie and what his clients want to see; “we employ people from every culture, but they all have something in common: they are polite, respectful, presentable and are all very experienced drivers.” Tickets, Money, Passports: If you need an airport transfer this summer, RoyalBorough Cars pride themselves on being an airport transfer specialist and can proudly say that in 8 years they haven’t failed to get a passenger to the airport on time. They are not only punctual, but also think about what their clients may need. And for those travelling with young children, RoyalBorough Cars can also provide
car seats for all ages, or you can bring your own; they can store it while you are away and pick you up with it. Time Management: With a team of 17 admin staff, including a dedicated account manager who over sees the day-to-day running of all corporate and executive accounts, and 50 drivers stationed all around hotspots in Greenwich, Blackheath and surrounding areas – you’ll never wait long for a RoyalBorough Car. Let me break a myth: for a day of feel good fitness, luxury pampering and fabulous food, all under one roof, there is no need to head out to a country retreat or storm into town – just nip over to Reebok at Canary Wharf. It’s 10am on a sunny Tuesday morning and looking out onto the summery Vista of Canary Wharf from Reebok Gym – it’s paradoxically calming. My morning starts with a personal training session; although all personal trainers at Reebok have a different specialism, my chosen PT is completing his Masters in Osteopathy, so we look at posture enhancing techniques, and exercises that strengthen and condition the muscles that deskbound bodies like mine desperately lack. The gym itself is sprawling giving you plenty of space and privacy, but offering 170 top-of-the-range exercise machines, Europe’s largest spin studio and a 13m climbing wall. Depending on your energy levels you can also enjoy the outdoor swimming pool, sauna and sun deck. From there you can graciously wander from the changing areas to a Re:SPA, where you can simply spoil yourself to a huge range of massages, facials, specialist body wraps and more (much more). My Murad ‘Intensive Wrinkle Reducer Rapid Peel’ rejuvenates and hydrates the skin leaving it brighter, firmer and more youthful. A week on I can still see the effects, and I’m still receiving compliments on how bright my skin looks. The whole treatment experience, from the results of the facial to the swanky treatment rooms and friendly staff, is one that really allows you to relax properly and gives you precious space to think.
Following this, what you choose to do for lunch is entirely up to you. But whether you require dash-dining or a leisurely lengthy lunch, The Pearson Room, just opposite from the gym, can be either efficient or relaxed, whichever suits your mood. The staff are as passionate about the food that is served as the chef is, and each and every dish feels as if it has been tended by a loving hand (and eye) before it makes it way to your table. Not wanting to undo the good work from earlier that morning - I plumped for the scallops to start, which my knife slid through effortlessly like butter; rare roast beef salad with sesame brioche for my main and a seasonal fruit and sorbet for a light, sweet and summery finish. Whether you’d like to pace this all out for the entire day, or to sneak it in between the school runs, both options are very, very possible. Do it alone or with your partner or even bring a group of girlfriends for a fabulous day out. Now; I must hurry back downstairs to do some shopping!

the hair strand is coated with a layer of “nanokeratin” molecules, a dissolving substance is vaporized through an additional process. At the end of this process a reaction called polymeriation occurs, filling the hair fissures and making the hair durable and flexible. As a result of straightening and coating the hair with nanokeratin, it becomes straight, beautiful, silky soft, healthier, strong, amazingly shiny and easier to style. Advantages of the Nanokeratin System: It’s a quick process that achieves high quality results, is suited to all hair types, repairs severely damaged hair and makes it healthier. Good Looks are offering all of the three ranges. On the silver and gold range we are offering a 30% discount as an introduction to the treatment. Perfect Nails for the Holidays
Nail extensions are a great way to add length and strength to your natural nails. They are perfect for every daywear, special occasions & weddings. Acrylic is the strongest form of nail extension and is applied at the tip to build up the nails. The nails are then filed and buffed to create a shiny, healthy looking nail. A gel topcoat can then be applied over the top. If you want a nail polish that will last for the entire holiday, Shellac promises smudge-proof nail colour that lasts for weeks without chipping. Gelish is similar to Shellac but you can apply nail art, decorations and colour fades to this polish. Both finishes are high quality, long lasting and perfect for the holiday season. Your nails can become a work of art. Lilly Nails by Selvi, mobile nail treatments in the comfort of your own home. Call 07435 560 966 10% off your first treatment. See ad on page 43
Beautiful Hair
The Nanokeratin System keratin treatment is used by salons such as Vidal Sassoons, Nicky Clarke, Daniel Galvin, Toni & Guy, and is a revolutionary hair styling treatment. This innovative system both straightens and repairs hair. The name Nanokeratin stems from the term “nanomolecules of keratin”. A nano-molecule is 0.000000001 of the size of a regular keratin molecule (keratin is a polymer) thus allowing it to penetrate the smallest fissures in the client’s hair and fill them with keratin (the substance that makes hair strong, shiny and soft). Tea for health and happiness
It was discovering how the naturally grown leaves from Camellia sinensis trees on the hillsides of Yunnan Province were hand picked before being transported down to the valley for drying to create incredibly healthy organic teas that prompted the formation of teacargo. co.uk. Teacargo.co.uk offers three authentic Chinese teas which all come from those naturally growing leaves and are all high in nutrients and antioxidants. The way the tea leaves are dried and prepared creates the different types. Tea Cargo uniquely positions their three teas for a full day’s healthy drinking: Green Tea in the morning to provide nutrients and to kick start the body’s functions; Oolong tea to stimulate the metabolism and Puerh tea in the evening (particularly after eating) to cleanse the system. That these types of natural teas are good for you is supported by many medical studies reproduced on the teacargo website. Just one report is typical in illustrating the benefits where a research study by the USA Agriculture Research Services found that volunteers drinking Oolong tea burned an additional 67 calories a day even compared to other volunteers who drank only water! www.teacargo.co.uk Meridian has 3 mixed (1xGreen, 1xOolong 1xPuerh) boxes of Tea Cargo’s Tea for our readers to try. Blackheath Cricket Club Still batting after 151 years First XI with centre - Graham Lawes, Jones Lang LaSalle and James Fleming, President of Blackheath CC
This year the Blackheath Cricket Club is celebrating its 151st anniversary. Based at the Rectory Field, which has been its home since 1886, cricket in Blackheath started on the open heath. Blackheath has a long history of sport. On the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603, her heir, King James VI of Scotland came to London as King James I and brought his large court to the Royal Palace at Greenwich. Golf had been played in Scotland for some 150 years before King James came to England and it is not surprising the golfers within the court climbed to the higher ground at Blackheath to pursue their sport. The Blackheath Golf Club was instituted in 1608 but it is known golf had been played since the court’s arrival. In 1830, the Blackheath Dartmouth cricket club was formed and played near Dartmouth Row on the west

side of the heath. Blackheath Paragon was founded in 1840 and Blackheath Morden in 1863. In the early 1830s, Blackheath was still home to golfers and the new cricket club. Soon, they were joined by young boys from the Blackheath Proprietary School who ran on the heath with a ball in a game called rugby. In 1858 the Blackheath Football Club was founded by some of the old boys of Rugby School as an open club, and so was born the first rugby club in the world without restricted membership. The keen Victorian sportsmen who played on the heath did not enjoy the predominately-smooth grass we see today. Instead, the heath was uneven, covered in patches of gorse and the surface was broken up by pits where gravel and sand had been excavated. The cricketers and other sportsmen had to clean and
level their own playing area from season to season. In 1886, a new home was found for the sportsmen at The Rectory Field. Charlton Road and The Blackheath Cricket, Football and Lawn Tennis Company were formed. Blackheath Morden took up residence at the new ground and dropped the area name from its title, thus creating the Club we know today. Blackheath Cricket Club has an illustrious record including being used by Kent for County Cricket until 1971. As one of the major clubs in the country, the Club entered the Kent League in 1973 where it still plays today. 2013 is the Club’s first season at the Royal Military Academy’s pitch in Woolwich. The 1st and 2nd teams will still use the Rectory Field for their home matches and this season the global real estate services, firm Jones Lang LaSalle is sponsoring the 1st XI.

Kids' Activities
No two words can grate on parents more than ‘I’m bored’, and during the six weeks holidays, come rain or shine, you’ll need your finger on the pulse to keep boredom at bay. But, with an abundance of activities happening locally, there is salvation. Make 2013 the summer to remember! By Claire Allen
I
f the whole family has varied interests, pleasing everyone can be trickiest of all, but look out for local venues such as Horniman’s and The Hop Farm who are offering a range of free activities including workshops, talks, indoor entertainment and attractions each day throughout the summer holidays, and it’ll be a doddle. If eclectic is what you need then Lollibop Festival (16, 17 and 18 August) at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and, of course, the Southbank are also great options, with something at every turn to keep them on their toes. Crafty Kids: If it’s glitter, glue and sequences that bring a smile to their face, take them along to Crafty Wednesdays at Greenwich Market with Greenwichmums.com; every Wednesday from 24 July – 28 August. While just around the corner, you can pop into Biscuit Ceramic Cafe, browse over a delicious menu and let them loose on blank ceramics that they can paint and take home, or send as gifts. Wild Child: Wild Wednesdays at Creekside Discovery Centre, Deptford, is teaming with wildlife and will keep the most inquisitive of
kids in awe, with bug hunting on 7 August, mudlarking on 14 August, den building on 21 August and crab catching on 28 August - come dressed to get mucky. Get close to nature at Maryon Wilson Animal Park, Charlton, with a tour and a chance to feed, pet and interact with ponies, deer, chicken, sheep and much more. Or simply enjoy beautiful views of London amongst 32 acres of farmland at Mudchute Park and Farm on the Isle of Dogs. Little Stars: Keeping the kids entertained can be exhausting, especially if you are juggling work too, so thank goodness for Summer Clubs. Whether they offer drama, dance and music workshops, sports or adventure activities, the kids LOVE them, and you get a few days of peace. Two shining examples are Greenwich Dance’s Summer Shake Up for 7 – 14 year olds (Monday 12 - Thursday 15 August, 10am – 1pm) and Theatre Bugs, which encourages confidence through creativity with drama, dance, music and dressing up as well as arts and crafts (19-23 August).
BOREDOM BUSTERS Unplug the iPod, ditch the X-box and enjoy these Old Skool boredom busters: • Pack all the family favourites and have a picnic on the park, or if you're feeling Olympic - have your egg and spoons at the ready, get a few families together and organise an old fashioned sports day. • Show us a child who doesn't love sweet things and getting messy! Have your own Great British Bake Off with a cake and cookie making afternoon. Winner gets to lick the bowl. • Get imaginative and hold your own treasure hunt! Remember - the wackier the clues the longer the little monsters will be kept busy. • Take to Blackheath with a kite and learn a new skill, or simply grab an ice cream and watch the pros create a sky show. • For sporty sorts, tackle the Thames Path on your bikes, and stop for a family lunch along the way to keep your energy up! Education
Hurrah for Summer Holidays! ...or are things about to change?
A
former education minister has said the sixweek summer holiday should be scrapped because some children forget what they have learned by the time they return to school. The Government has announced that in future, local councils will no longer be able to tell their schools when terms should start and end. The move, which is contained in the new Deregulation Bill, paves the way for individual schools to introduce longer terms and cut the length of school holidays. Many secondary schools set simple projects for the new year 7s to complete over the summer holiday, mindful of how the long holiday can demotivate some children and that it can take a couple of weeks in the new term to get them back up to speed. An ideal way of occupying some of their free time is by enrolling on a summer course in art, drama or sport, such as the Shakespeare course run by Theatresaurus, taking place for children age 6+ on 5–9 August at St Olave’s Prep School. Ros Johnson, Director of Theatresaurus, who has recently re-established her links with the Royal
Shakespeare Company, believes that the best way to discover the richness and variety in Shakespeare's plays is to DO them. Over the four days, all participants not only rehearse and work on the techniques required for the final performance but also learn Stage fighting, vocal skills and improvisation. For more information about Theatresaurus and other courses, holiday opportunities and weekly, term-time drama club, contact Ros on 07976 710 016 or email: info@theatresaurus.co.uk
Benefits from tutoring Come September your child might benefit from being tutored if results, grades, achievements are lower than expected or your child’s confidence is slipping and they could do with a boost in a particular subject (or across the board). Perhaps they need to improve their grades in order to pass a forthcoming exam. However, it’s very important to talk to your child’s teacher before you make the decision to hire a tutor. There may be extra help that could be provided free of
charge in their school or the teacher may have other ideas about how to help your child. Tutors have different styles and approaches to working. It’s worth thinking about what approach you feel would work for your child, and talking it through with a possible tutor. You should also think about where the tutoring would take place. Some tutors come to you, while others work in their own homes. Whatever would best suit you and your child? It’s vital to make sure a private tutor has had a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check.

Parenting news and views Water - it's enticing but just keep to the rules First lesson - swimming!
On average one person drowns in the UK every 17 hours. Drowning is the third highest cause of accidental death among children with more than half of incidents happening at rivers, lakes, canals and reservoirs. There are many campaigns that highlight the importance of knowledge of water safety awareness and that swimming is the only sport that can save your life. Apart from the importance of learning to swim and having water confidence, children should know how to spot the dangers. Open water like a lake may look tempting and safe, but it can be very dangerous. The water will be very cold, there may be hidden currents or obstacles, and it can be deep and difficult to get out if there are steep, slippery banks. A lot of women also find that swimming helps to ease swelling in their legs and feet, or even sciatic pain as it improves circulation. Swimming also gives you a wonderful sense of well-being and is great for stress-busting and relaxing. Some evidence suggests that swimming can encourage your baby to get into the best position for labour. But before you take to the water just check with your midwife about anything you are unsure of. Learning update New Head Teacher
The Governors of Eltham College have announced the appointment of Mr Guy Sanderson as the next Headmaster. He will succeed Mr Paul Henderson who is retiring in September 2014 after 14 years of outstanding service. Guy is currently Deputy Head at Reigate Grammar School. to the week was a visit from a science boffin who presented an assembly to the whole school showing amazing scientific experiments. The day culminated with a rocket launch in the school playground. www.st-josephs.bromley.sch.uk
Hungry Student Cookbooks
One of the biggest challenges students face at university is fending for themselves in the kitchen. The Hungry Student Cookbook, The Hungry Student Vegetarian Cookbook and The Hungry Student: Easy Baking will take students from fresher’s week to graduation, all on a seriously tight budget. We asked Anna Moss, work experience student for her view, "Gone are the days when vegetarian cooking was confined to chickpeas and lentils. This book is full of innovative recipes ranging from simple pasta bakes and pizzas to veggie jambalaya and toadin-the-hole. Even meat eaters will be tempted. The desert section includes some particularly mouthwatering treats – the baked chocolate bananas are ambrosial, and only require two ingredients."
Masterchef Grand Final at Bethany School
Four Year 7’s all aged 12 took part in ‘Masterchef Grand Final’ and their task was to design and make a two-course lunch to be served in the VIP suite during the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. Professional judge Josemanuel Azevedo, head chef and co-owner at The Swan, Chapel Down Vineyard, Tenterden was so impressed with the standards that he also took 4 recipes from the boys and will feature their dishes in his restaurant. The winner was Sam from Wittersham. His dishes comprised: Pan fried wild pigeon breast with a red onion & port reduction served with new potatoes and steamed baby carrots followed by English Strawberry Crumble & crème fraiche. National Athletics Champion
Anna Barnett, aged 14, pupil at Babington House School in Chislehurst, was placed 1st in the Discus competition at the Independent Schools Association Athletics National Championships held in Birmingham at the Alexander Stadium in June. Anna was one of five pupils from Babington House School selected to represent the London South Team in this major National Athletics Competitions where they all performed extremely well and placed as follows: Esmee Hawkey 3rd in the High Jump; Lucy Puplett 3rd in the Triple Jump; Bibi Brown 4th in the 80 metre Hurdles and Tate Dowding 5th in the Long Jump. Head of PE at Babington House, Mrs Jackson said, “They should all be very proud of this success."
Congratulations Are in Order The Green Scene team at Corelli College has done it yet again! If winning four silver gilts at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show and adding to their previous haul wasn’t enough, the team have gone and exceeded all expectations by winning the Champion Garvinea Bloom (11 – 15 year olds) category in the exclusive Thompson & Morgan School Garvinea Growing Competition. Tracy Nutton and the Green Scene team (pictured below) were invited to Hampton Court to pick up their prize from The Sun’s Gardening Editor, Peter Seabrook.

Playing on the River Ahoy my harties, take to the water!
By Valerie Breese
THE GREAT MAP AT THE NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM
A
s a child I loved to cross Tor Bay on the local ferry from Torquay to Brixham and then across on the car ferry to Dartmouth and back again, it was the highlight of the holidays. I think most children are captivated by water unless they turn green at the thought of stepping aboard any kind of vessel. With Greenwich located on the banks of the famous River Thames it’s a perfect way to while away an afternoon or make a day of it with your children. Take a riverboat from one of the three piers, Royal Arsenal Woolwich, Greenwich Peninsula or Greenwich for a round trip up to Westminster to see the sites. With the many offers and deals it’s cheaper to take a few friends with you plus your child will have company and perhaps another parent will allow you some adult company. But make sure you stop off at the local attractions along the way, as you can purchase a river pass that allows you to hop on and off as many times as you like; and as the boats are sailing later into the evening, it will give you more time to explore and then it will just be home to bed.
Shonibare MBE’s Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle sculpture. Starting at The Great Map in the museum and ending at Trafalgar Square, visit the places where history was made. Ask at the information desk for your copy of the trail. If you don’t fancy the walk, or your children are too young, you can always make your own ship inspired by Yinka’s Ship in a Bottle and find out more about the story of Britain today at the free, daily workshops, which are suitable for all ages. Before you board your riverboat make sure that they stop at the piers required for your route as certain providers offer different stops. Take a map and set sail. A short walk from Bankside Pier is Pickfords Wharf, Clink Street and sitting in a dock you’ll find The Golden Hind or Hinde, a full sized reconstruction of Sir Francis Drake’s Tudor galleon.
Explore this vessel, which offers a unique insight into Drake’s circumnavigation of the globe from 1577 – 1580 with a self-guided tour or experience Tudor life aboard Golden Hinde II in one of the organised workshops. Tower Pier is perfect for anyone wishing to explore two of London's most famous attractions: the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. Other attractions in the area include the museum ship HMS Belfast, St. Katharine's Dock, the Design Museum and the Monument: Christopher Wren's memorial to the Great Fire of London - all of which are less than a twenty minute walk from the Pier. Westminster Pier is one of the best situated piers for many of London's most historic and prestigious landmarks and attractions, including the Houses of Parliament, Churchill Museum, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Cabinet War Rooms and Big Ben, the famous bell at the top of the Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster. From here, it's just a short walk through the many sights of Central London to even more famous locations, such as Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and Covent Garden.
As a guide, you can’t go wrong starting in Greenwich with the iconic Cutty Sark with special family events, as well as the vast hull and deck of this famous tea clipper to explore. Located only a short walk from Greenwich Pier, the Cutty Sark DLR, and Maze Hill BR station is the National Maritime Museum and the Queen’s House. General admission and most of the family events are free unless stated. For landlubbers try their new, free self-guided walking trail for the family (suitable for 6+) exploring the places in London that connect with Yinka

The Hill - a taste of the Mediterranean with a distinctly Latin American twist!
On a balmy July evening I took my daughter to Greenwich to find this Mediterranean cuisine restaurant. Times can’t be that bad as most tables were taken, by contrast, in France earlier this year, restaurants and cafes were empty. The menu is quite short but there is a good choice. She said Antipasto (a bit like abracadabra), so I hovered between seared scallops with Parma ham and warm leaf salad with squid and chorizo. The latter platter proved to be a conundrum as the plentiful squid has a very mild taste, and the chorizo a full, rich bang of flavours but not if both were eaten together. It was filling. I know the huge board of salamis, mozzarella and bruschetta looked enough for a main course on its own, and her Pizza Primavera (with prosciutto, mozzarella and rocket) main made us all laugh, the waitress included, as it was as big as a sombrero and she hadn’t a hope of finishing it. She tried hard, I must say, but took half of it home. I choose too often courses where the first taste is the same as the last, which is okay if the flavour is good, but it can be repetitive. Slow cooked pork with mashed potatoes tasted good and I did enjoy it. There is some prosciutto in there somewhere elusive in the white wine sauce that keeps you hooked. Now, her crème brulee was lovely, but I had the choice course of the night... Churros with Dulce de Lecce sauce, ai Caramba amigos! Okay they’re hot and crisp, a bit like sweet chips but made from a deep fried batter not potato. Heart shaped and the size of sugary bangles they were served with the most delicious chocolatey sauce, so, of course, she helped me eat them, but still managed to keep her brulee to herself. It was a real pleasure of an evening, my wife joined us later so we decided to sit in the lush garden at the rear of the restaurant under the stars while drinking coffee. A double espresso, high in caffeine plus a complimentary glass of Sambucco, perfect. Jolly D. By Michael Breese
Matching Pairs at the Spread Eagle As a couple who love their food and equally regard their wine, a food and wine pairing evening sounded ideal, but also slightly scary, did we know enough about wine? Instead our Portuguese inspired evening it turned out to be one of the friendliest and most fascinating evenings we’ve had in Greenwich. On our arrival we were sat and greeted with a crisp Brut Reserve Cava and three considered canapés: venison sausage with chilli mango relish, smoked salmon with crème fraiche & chive, then five-spiced poached pears wrapped in prosciutto and rocket. With the adage in mind that ‘everyone has to start somewhere’, as we were invited through to the Spread Eagles elegant dining room, we were pleased to be introduced to Peter Bowers, a wine industry veteran of 45 years. Here the nerves disappeared: Peter was charming, knowable and clearly loved to see new faces as much as those who keep returning to these monthly evenings. For starters we enjoyed stuffed clams, oven-baked with breadcrumbs, lemon and garlic, which were paired with a white PE’ Branco 2010 – a refreshing, smooth and citrusy white. Alongside this, a ceviche of tuna tartare in a lime and mint marinade with avocado and cherry tomato - paired with a Esporao Reserva Branco 2011 – the more complex of the two which, gauging the amount of top ups, was evidently very quaffable. For the mains, ( yes, mains plural) we tucked into wild boar cooked in ragu, with pancetta and penne pasta, paired with a PE’ Tinto 2010; the red sister wine of the first white. As with the starter wines, Peter introduced the reds, detailing how each was made and the notes we may detect, before coming to each table individually to answer questions and share his expertise. Our second main - a generous stuffed saddle of lamb, with garlic spinach, rosemary and sauté potatoes in a red wine jus - came this time with a spicy, fruity and mildly oaky Esporao Reserva red 2010 that effortlessly highlighted the natural sweetness of the lamb. Whilst desert: a light, lemon and mixed berry pavalova with Chantilly cream, joined with a brut rosada cava – meant we were sent into the night air with a punch of citrus and sparkle. Whether beginner, enthusiast or connoisseur - for a fun, fine food and wine filled evening and a wobbly walk home, the Spread Eagle is a fabulous opportunity to indulge and time educate yourself in the world of fine wines. Already time to plan the Greenwich Theatre's pantomime says the Artistic Director, James Hadrell
2ND SAT OF EVERY MONTH Although the summer may have finally arrived in style, working in a theatre which offers such a year-round programme means that the seasons all tend to blur into one for us. On Sunday 14 July we teamed up with Greenwich Dance to welcome almost 2500 people to Eltham Palace in glorious sunshine for the fifth Greenwich World Cultural Festival, and then the very next day we were back in the office for our second pantomime production meeting. This is always a special meeting as it’s traditionally the time when the set designer unveils their model of the set for the show, so for this year’s Puss In Boots it was a chance for the team to start thinking about how we create a river, a goblin’s castle, an elf’s shoe shop and more, all on the Greenwich Theatre stage. And then of course there’s our magic consultant. Puss is a magical character and you can’t tell the story of his adventures without having a trick or two up your sleeve. For last year’s production of Robin Hood, Maid Marian had to levitate and disappear. Of course I can’t reveal what we’re planning in magic terms but believe me it was an exciting meeting, and that goblin is definitely going to get his comeuppance! So now the set designs go to the builder, the costume designs (including those classic dame costumes) go to the makers, the writer takes another look at the script and the lighting designer starts putting together a plan. And then of course we go back to thinking about what’s going on now - the 9 productions we’re trying out at festivals around the country before bringing them back here, the launch of our autumn season and a new strand of adult education planned for October. Summer holidays? Not at Greenwich Theatre! Tickets for Puss In Boots are on sale now 020 8858 7755 | www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk The full autumn season will be announced in August

An exhibition that celebrates the ‘genius’ of fans. From the sublime to the bizarre, Curiosities & Quirky Fans offers up an alternative view on the history of fans. Encompassing fans from the 17th century to the present day, the exhibition reveals how fan-makers have combined artistry, imagination and humour to create objects that continue to amaze and delight. Highlights include an exquisite 17th century folding fan which opens two ways to reveal four faces, several patented trick fans including a truly mystifying 'dislocating' example, and a series of 'transformers' comprising: bouquet, parasol, cigar, and even dagger varieties! A short film, produced in conjunction with the University of Greenwich, enables visitors to gain a better understanding of how many of the exhibits operate. Admission to the exhibition includes entry to the permanent collection, which features works by Gauguin and Sickert, and numerous rare extended fan leaves dating from the 17th century onwards. www.thefanmuseum.org.uk Win one of 5 pairs of entrance tickets with cream tea in the Orangery. Theatrebugs Greenwich Summer Workshops. Why not let us take the little ones off your hands for 4 and 5 fun filled days of acting, singing, dancing arts and crafts and dressing up - what could possibly be better? Bina Brown, local mum to 2 bugs and owner of Theatrebugs Greenwich, has been facilitating fun filled classes in Greenwich and the surrounding areas for the past year, and this summer is no different. The 4 and 5 day Summer Workshop costs £94 & £115 and is designed for 3.5 to 7 year olds. “Our holiday workshops are very popular and fill up very quickly!” says Bina, owner of Theatrebugs Greenwich. “We also understand that the majority of mums want their children to take part in a fun activity that will help them make friends and boost their confidence, and Theatrebugs workshops do exactly that! Crossrail Not long now...
C
rossrail will run 118 km from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west, through new twin-bore 21 km tunnels under central London to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. It will bring an additional 1.5 million people within 45 minutes commuting distance of London's key business districts. A funding commitment for the £100m fit-out of Woolwich Crossrail station is expected to be finalised by the beginning of August, according to two stakeholders in the negotiations.
John Anderson, regional chairman for Berkeley Homes, which is proposing to build 2,500 homes above and around the station, told the New London Architecture conference on the London boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham in July that a funding agreement for the fit-out would be agreed “in the next week or so." Meanwhile Sam Richards, head of urban integration for Crossrail, told the same conference he expected “there’ll be positive news in the next couple of weeks." An £80m skeleton station was completed in February, but the fit-out has been dependent on Transport for London, the government, Berkeley Homes and Greenwich council thrashing out a funding package for the fit-out works. Transport for London set a deadline of last month for a funding package to be agreed and did not discount the possibility of trains running through the empty box without stopping if an funding agreement for the fit-out could not be reached. Richards said planning work for the Weston Williamsondesigned station was ongoing, with design
work on the urban realm surrounding the station beginning this month. TfL says the station is needed to serve a local population that is expected to double by 2026. It added that a new station would support local economic growth and improve connectivity to Canary Wharf, the City and West End, increasing the employment chances of Woolwich residents. Crossrail journey times from Woolwich will be eight minutes to Canary Wharf and 16 minutes to Liverpool Street. The key benefits from a Woolwich Crossrail station include: supporting sustainable economic development and population growth by increasing transport capacity and reducing congestion on the transport network. A Crossrail station at Woolwich will not only support the regeneration of Woolwich itself, but will also contribute to economic growth across London. Also reducing crowding on National Rail services into London Bridge by around 30 per cent. With the introduction of Crossrail services from Woolwich, large numbers of passengers would switch from National Rail and DLR services to Crossrail, making it the eighth busiest Crossrail station.
