Award-winning actor Luke Treadaway, who plays 15-year-old ‘mathematician with behavioural difficulties’ in the National Theatre’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, presented 25 hard-working apprentices and trainees with their catering qualifications at a celebratory event to mark Adult Learners Week. Each one of the apprentices and trainees has a disability and the qualifications were gained through a specially created scheme run by Unity Kitchen, the social enterprise arm of charity, the Camden Society. Neighbourhood watch This is the sixth year that the Eaglesfield Park Neighbourhood Watch Scheme (EPNWS) has held a fete to help promote the benefits of the scheme and foster community spirit, and will be opened by Borough Commander Detective Chief Superintendent Richard Wood. New attractions this year include a puppet show, miniature trains and the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery. Greenwich Met Police teams will be on hand as well as the Eltham Fire Brigade. Pets at Home Charlton will be providing pet care advice and Woodlands Farm will be bringing some of the farm animals, plus much more. Saturday 15 June. 1pm to 4pm. Holiday for the Walrus The Horniman Museum and Gardens waved off its walrus on his first trip for more than 100 years. The walrus – famously overstuffed by his Victorian taxidermist and weighing around a ton – is on his way to the Turner Contemporary in Margate where he’ll spend the summer taking pride of place in a new exhibition, Curiosity: Art and the Pleasures of Knowing, 25 May – 15 September 2013. The walrus – probably a young male – was bought by Museum founder Frederick Horniman in the early 1890s and has moved no more than 25 feet since the Horniman opened in 1901.

MAYOR OF LONDON Boris Johnson, has committed £300,000 to three London ‘Portas Pilots’ operating in Lambeth, Lewisham and Tower Hamlets. Using the findings of the Mary Portas Review, these projects are designed to promote the Mayor’s key aims to create jobs and growth. The Mayor’s London Portas Pilots were selected for the strength of their proposals to revitalise town centres, recognising the key economic role retail hubs play in the capital’s communities. The London Portas Pilots are being delivered hand-in-hand with local boroughs, town teams and local people. The Mayor’s Outer London Fund is part of a major package of investment which aims to boost local high streets, deliver growth, new jobs and improve lives. The focus of the Forest Hill Fashion project is to create
a lasting legacy of the SEE3 Portas Pilot by bringing increased footfall to the area and creating opportunities for new businesses to start and to grow. Lewisham Council is providing an additional £137,000 to help rejuvenate the SEE3 high streets in Sydenham, Kirkdale and Forest Hill with new street markets, start-up opportunities for new businesses and creative exhibitions. Penelope Else, pictured, right, is the driving force behind these ambitions, is a project manager who co-delivered SEE3’s Forest Hill Fashion Week in February, created the sydenhamtowncentre.com trader’s web portal, and designs and makes clothes herself. She outlines the vision: ‘We have such a wide range of fashion and artistic talent in SE23, and I wanted to find a way to bring it all together so that we could develop it and promote it to the world. With that in place I believe we will attract new boutiques and designer-makers to the area, making Forest Hill an increasingly interesting place to shop for fashion.’ Forest Hill is set to become the most exciting place for fashion in South East London as the first SEE3 legacy project gets underway. The next Forest Hill Fashion Week
will take place in late September, with a catwalk show to be held at Horniman Museum as part of their ‘Museum at Night’ programme. Linda Hughes, Operations and Communications Manager at the Horniman says: ‘We are delighted to be holding this event as it will be an innovative way of introducing a new audience to what Forest Hill has to offer. The evening will be filled with fashion-related events, and will be a wonderful fun night out for all.’ The web portal at www.foresthillfashion.com will be an image-based website that can be searched by clothes type or designer. Local boutiques and designer-makers can showcase or sell their own clothes and accessories, and customers can search the stock before committing to a visit to the high street… or they can order online.

TO TRAVEL LIGHT, first pick a bag, but just one! There are many kinds of luggage, from hard-sided suitcases to collapsible duffel bags. When flying, choose a bag that is able to be a carry-on, rather than one that requires you to check-in. To be on the safe side, choose a piece of luggage that does not exceed 55cm x 35cm x 25cm, though some airlines may be more generous than others. The weight limit of 10 kilos will allow for the bag to go in the airplane’s overhead bin at no extra cost and there’ll be no check-in queues, no waiting for luggage at arrival or checked luggage fees. Secondly, plan your wardrobe carefully. Clothing takes up around 80% to 90% of the space in our case, and we usually carry more than we need. Be smart with the clothing you choose, and you will be able to manage your days traveling with style! Don’t waste space on an item that doesn’t match the other clothes you’re taking, mix and

Minimise your toiletries by buying miniature sizes or decant into small containers available from chemists, which abide by the airport rules on size. A decent smartphone nowadays can replace a laptop, while still offering most of the functions you will need – like a camera. Don’t forget that travel adapter! Historically, there have been the first public viewings of cars from the likes of Mercedes and BMW, such as the BMW X6 and the Mercedes E-class here. Whatever happens, there will definitely be a great mix of cars, from the supercars to the off-roaders, classic cars and luxury cars. There may even be an eco-friendly car, much to the dismay of Jeremy Clarkson! For those that are lucky enough to have a driving licence, remember to bring it with you, there will also be the chance to book a test drive of the cars with a ‘Drive Me’ sign. Most of the cars will also be
available to be purchased at the event. The original concept was designed for office workers to visit a motor show during their lunch hour, therefore not having to take time off work. This was because Canary Wharf began life as solely a business district when the first office buildings were completed in 1991. Development continued and now Canary Wharf boasts a great range of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. This will make Canary Wharf a ‘must-visit’ during the week in June that the Motorexpo is on. There really is something for each member of the family. 2013 will be the 18th year that it has come to London and much like Canary Wharf; it now attracts people from all over the country and is expected to become the most visited motor show in the UK. It will be open Monday 10 June to Saturday 15 June between the hours of 10am and 6pm and on Sunday 16 June, 11am to 5pm. Whatever the weather is like in this week of June, come rain or shine, you will find me visiting the Canary Wharf Motorexpo at least one of the days, if not more! By Kabir Dev

ith an enviable annual average temperature of 22ºC the Canary Islands have for sometime been a major holiday destination. IT WOULD SEEM that we have started to dine alfresco more and more, though unlike our European neighbours across the Channel who, thanks to their summer weather, have mastered the art of outdoor dining, we are still getting the hang of it in between rain showers. Making time for Greenwich

reenwich has well and truly overcome its 2012 Olympic hangover and the town centre is expecting more than 15 million visitors in 2013. Greenwich is internationally recognised as the ‘home of time’ and the location of the Prime Meridian, where the eastern hemisphere meets the western. It is also a World Heritage Site, with architecture unsurpassed in Europe. However, these facts do not limit Greenwich to being an area only for tourists; it is a destination accessible to the whole of London. Public transport links are outstanding; not only are there buses and trains but the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) also goes into the heart of Greenwich. You can even take the cable car – or catch a boat from central London, enjoying the scenic route along the River Thames. The nautical theme continues, as you are able to visit
the newly restored Cutty Sark, the last surviving tea clipper in the world. And the country’s only National Maritime Museum has extended its free Arctic Convoy exhibition to run throughout 2013. The exhibition shows the perils Allied forces faced while transporting supplies to Russia during World War II. If you are more interested in scenery you can walk across the top of the O2, getting 360-degree views of the capital. Or, if you prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground, the arena is a fantastic concert venue. A stroll through Greenwich Park is delightful. Standing by the statue of General Wolfe the view of the Queen’s House and the Old Royal Naval College with Canary Wharf and Docklands in the background is simply breathtaking. If it’s shopping that floats your boat, avoid the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street and drop by the
independent boutiques or Greenwich market, which is open TuesdaySunday. It has a vibrant atmosphere, especially at weekends, and is filled with handmade objects that will appeal to everyone. The market will be renovated during 2013, receiving an upgrade to the cobbled floor and a new roof. Of course, within the town centre you’re perfectly placed to refuel at any of the pubs, restaurants or cafés. There’s something to keep the whole family happy… and if you find yourself loving it so much that you want to stay a while, Greenwich also has hotels and guest houses. by Kabir Dev

It covers a wide range of subject areas and tends to be more hands on than academic qualifications might be. School's I.B. Launch Day Eltham Hill School sets out its International Baccalaureate offering
ELTHAM HILL SCHOOL is the only school in the Royal Borough of Greenwich to be authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme to students at Sixth Form level. From this September, the school will be expanding its provision to include a Post-16 offering, which will be co-educational. On Wednesday 1 May, Eltham Hill School hosted a special event to launch the International Baccalaureate. At the event there was an opportunity to talk to IB teachers, a tour of the school and taster IB lessons for potential students. The event, which took place from 6pm to 8pm, was an opportunity for potential students, parents/carers and the local community to find out more about the IB. More than 90 people attended the event, including the Mayor and Mayoress of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The International Baccalaureate will be central to Eltham Hill's Post-16 offer, alongside a range of A Levels.The outstanding facilities offered by the new buildings at the school ensure that it will continue to provide an innovative and creative approach to learning for the 21st century. Eltham Hill School principal Madeleine Griffin said: 'We are extremely proud that we have been accredited as an IB World School. The IB launch event offered a chance to find out more about the diploma, how the course is structured and answer any questions. The International Baccalaureate gives students the opportunity for a holistic education with high academic standards that also provides an international perspective. It encourages students to develop personally by taking on challenges such as voluntary work for local communities alongside world challenges abroad.' Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Councillor David Grant said of the event: 'It was a brilliant opportunity to go to Eltham Hill School and find out what will be offered to students through the International Baccalaureate. It’s very exciting that Eltham Hill School is the first school so far in Royal Greenwich to be authorised to offer the IB.' Student Caprice Anno-Barnieh commented: 'The IB event really opened up my mind and widened my future as I am thinking of doing the IB course. Method: Mix the ricotta with parmesan and lemon zest. Season with salt and pepper and pour in a piping bag. Gently open the courgette flowers and take the pistil out. Fill the courgette flower with the ricotta mix and twist the top closed. For the batter: Mix the flour with egg and the beer. Slowly add the water till it became creamy.

London's love affair ...with Gin
Where can I find authentic Nepalese food in London?
Carolyn Bosworth-Davies tells us all about it
T
he arrival of June with the prospect of long days soaking up the sunshine is what everyone is yearning for, especially this year. As I write, the supermarket endof-aisle offers are appearing, familiar summer drinks such as Pimms, and their copy cat rivals, such as Sainsbury’s Pitchers ( £12.00 a litre). Sadly, Pimms is not what it used to be – its alcoholic content having been reduced considerably over the years, and the resulting concoctions produced from it, and served at tennis tournaments, and outside catering events, are frankly a rip off. All drinks, both alcoholic and non alcoholic, should have flavours that excite the taste buds, and more importantly in the summer time, be refreshing. Mostly, they are nothing more than sugary, diluted and rather bland. A few years back I came across the following recipe for a homemade Pimms – which has become a firm favourite with the editorial team at Meridian among many others. Here it is again, and though the initial outlay on the ingredients may cost a bit, you will be rewarded by making the effort. Simply take a measure of strong 40% Gin, and for every measure of gin you add to a jug, mix a measure of red vermouth and half a measure of orange curacao (Cointreau can do). Then top up with ice-cold lemonade or ginger ale and garnish with freshly sliced fruit and sprigs of mint. Gin, however, is becoming the increasingly popular spirit of choice, especially with the rising number of premium small scale distilleries in the UK. Sipsmith has led the way in London and Chase (formerly of Tyrells Crisps) in Hereford, with delicious examples that really do have flavours from the botanticals they use, and because of their small batch distilling. Now we even have a distillery on our doorstep in Bermondsey producing traditional old style gin which is perfect for mixing. From this year Jensen's Bermondsey London Dry Gin and Jensen London-Distilled Old Tom Gin will take place in a small distillery in railway arches near London Bridge, on fashionable foodies' market Maltby Street (a trendier version of nearby Borough Market, if far smaller). For more details check www.bermondseygin.com This is a full strength gin at 43% and average retail price is £26.45. Cucumber is often used in long cool summer drinks, especially with gin. In timely fashion Gordon’s have just launched a premixed gin, infused with cucumber called Gordon’s Crisp Cucumber Gin. However it is only 37.5%, and for me a better gin is Hendricks, distilled in Scotland. Hendricks is also small batch distilled with eleven botanicals which uniquely includes rose petals and cucumber. Their website www.hendricks.com has great ideas for summer drinks which will certainly help quench your thirst if temperatures do rise this June.

BERMONDSEY LOCALS may already be familiar with 214 Bermondsey – London’s newest gin and cocktail bar. Here Gin is most definitely in and if you fancy yourself as a bit of a Gin aficionado then their homemade tonic is worth a try. Less of a mixer and more of an accompaniment, the 214 tonic really allows the complexity of the Gins to come through. If it is something more readily accessible you are after, and you like your drinks bitter sweet, then you could try your hand at their 214 Collins, a refreshing take on the classic Gin cocktail the Tom Collins. Mix 2 parts Gin, 1 part Campari and 1 part Lemon Juice with a healthy half measure of sugar syrup. Shake hard and top with Soda for the ultimate in summer refreshment.

Tompkins tapas and wine evening WE’VE BEEN HERE BEFORE and know we are in for a great evening out. Tonight, Tompkins, in Canary Wharf’s Pan Peninsula, is holding an unique tapas and wine pairing event, so if wine balances the love of food, drink on. Quite darkly lit, the bar area holds a throng of people. It’s busy and not a little noisy, yet as we are shown to our table in the restaurant area, the noise is left behind, a background to the more glamorous surroundings and music from a studious young flamenco guitarist. Customers are dressed with some sophistication, wellheeled, not oiled. Shown to our table, our reception is warmed, paradoxically, by a tall glass of chilled Castillo Perelada Cava Brut Reserva. Dry, faintly citrus-scented and made in the champenoise traditional method, this is a welcome palate- preparing fizz indeed. Three starter tapas are served with three wines.
Sanchez Romate Fino Marismeno, aged in solera (an age-blending-in-barrel process) for more than 7 years, is crisp and dry, a typical Jerez fino sherry with a lingering perfect acidity and finish. Also, Tobia Blanco Rioja, clear and brilliant, a pale yellow-green glassful of light fresh citrus flavours followed by Rueda Blanco, Badajo, a lovely wine, the party choice of Embassies. This is all quite a mouthful, but not in the same glass. The main tapas dishes are paired with a selection of red wines; La Cesta Garnacha Old Wines from Catalonia; Five Fincas Tinto Reserva, Castillo Perelada and Rioja Vega Reserva. There is so much to taste and the whirligig of wines brings its revenges. Finally we watch as a glass of Sanchez Romate Pedro Ximenez Cardenal Cisneros is poured over our ice cream dessert… I’m very glad I didn’t drive. Michael Breese. Mogul's wine pairing evening OUR SECOND EVENING was at Mogul, in Greenwich, pairing wines with, on this occasion, main courses, and it revealed a few surprises. Some of the wines featured were the same as those tasted in our review of wines with starters (see Meridian, May 2013), so you don’t have to buy lots of different bottles. They can be bought by the glass too, if you want to try them. We began with a lovely chilled Prosecco, fizzing and clean, welcome even though the weather could be warmer. Imali Machli, (Red Snapper fillets) came first, with Garlic Chili Prawns; both beautifully presented. Snapper is unfish-like. Cooked in the tandoor, the heat affects the yoghurt and spices marinade, not the meat, which stays succulent. The skin becomes smoky and the texture soft. Flavours build in the mouth and stay a long time, to be enjoyed slowly. The slightly sour aftertaste of tamarind is a late surprise. Garlic Chili Asian King Prawns are in pepper sauce, garnished with spring onions and utterly delicious. Paired with them, Chateau de Campuget Invitation Rosé provided a taste of Southern France that you could drink all day, never sharp but gentle and light. Mattar Paneer (Asian Cheese, and peas cooked in a rich tomato and onion gravy), and Aloo Gobi (potatoes

and cauliflower sautéed with cumin and ginger) with naans, arrived next. The spicing is gentle, giving utterly delicious, comfortable eating. Pinot Grigio Ca’ Lunghetta, Botter, (Italy) is suited to these courses, but try Le Bosq Rouge, from Nimes, France, it’s such a surprise and wholly engaging. Both wines improve in the glass; temperature is important, so drink (and eat) slowly to get the best from the experience. Chicken marinated in fresh ginger and garlic and char-grilled (Makhani Murgh) is slightly sweetish, as is the French Gewürztraminer Reserve Laurentz. Do they go together? Excellently… and Rioja Ondarre Graciano, a Spanish flier, works wonderfully well. Then came Rogan Josh with Lamb Biryani. Classically North Indian, Rogan features lamb with mild red chillies, hence the colour to the rich sauce. Two gorgeous courses: Chateau de Campuget Invitation Rose, works perfectly, but South African Boer & Brit Suikerbossie Pinotage Petit Verdot, initially drier, slowly reveals character and takes you over the edge. LEONARDO DA VINCI has gone down in history as an artist, but he was just as much an engineer and scientist; even our own Robert Hooke is known today as a scientist and philosopher while his first work in London was as apprentice to a leading court painter. In the coming months in Greenwich, art and science are set to be intertwined once again in a high profile exhibition and a brand new stage play celebrating the work of astronomers throughout history. From 11-13 July at Greenwich Theatre, Caroline Herschel, one of the only female astronomers working in the 18th Century, is brought to life in the acclaimed new play STELLA by Siobhán Nicholas – a play which has united the arts and the sciences in attracting support from both Arts Council England and the Institute of Physics. During her early career Caroline worked largely in the shadow of her brother, official astronomer to George III, but she is now credited with the discovery of eight comets and eleven nebulae and she became one of the first honorary women members of the Royal Astronomical Society. In STELLA, Caroline’s life is set against that of a fictional 21st century female astronomer, both able to locate their place in the universe but both struggling to understand their place in the world. Meanwhile, from 7 June - 15 September at the National Maritime Museum, VISIONS OF THE UNIVERSE tells the story of astronomical imaging, not through a lecture or a series of experiments, but in an exhibition, ranging from the earliest drawings done by hand to the latest pictures from Hubble and the Mars Curiosity rover. Chapters All Day Dining located in the heart of Blackheath Village has blended the informality and bonhomie of continental cafĂŠ society with the culinary skills of an award-winning kitchen team. Head Chef Alex Tyndall gives Meridian his view on why Chapters All Day Dining has become the perfect neighbourhood restaurant. When did you take over the position as head Chef at CADD? Just over a year ago I moved from our other Blackheath restaurant, Bella Vista but I've been with the company since 2004. I started my career as a pastry chef under Andy McLeish at Chapter One followed by two years at what previously was Chapter Two (Fine Dining), and now the re-banded Chapters All Day Dining! I understand that CADD has won several awards... Yes, the Michelin Bib Gourmand in the first few months of opening, and two AA Rosettes, which is an indicator of quality of food as well as value for money. How do you manage the "All Day Dining" menu from breakfast, brunch, afternoon tea, bar menu and dinner in the evening? It feels quite natural, it's a small kitchen but it works effectively. I start at 7am and the first orders are from 8am. The change of menu throughout the day is fluid, we can move from eggs benedict to fish and chips and then on to the dinner menu seamlessly. It's a well thought out menu - was it designed by you? No, the concept and menu came with the rebrand, before I started. The format for the menu is Modern European, brasserie style. The all-day menu includes a great value plat du jour, as well as a superb Ă la carte range, which offers variation to our many returning customers. Do you source the produce used in the restaurant? It's my responsibility and it can take up a lot of my time, but it's worth it. I know exactly where the produce comes from and as I like to use as much local and seasonal as possible you need to have a good relationship with suppliers such as, Watts Farm, a co-operative of growers, which covers 10 sites in Kent, Essex and Bedfordshire. I also use the Gloucester Old Spot pig for the pork; seasonal venison from Chart farm and fresh fish from day boats via a traditional fishmonger. We hear a lot about the Josper Grill, what makes the difference to grilled food? The Josper grill is an enclosed charcoal oven with a top temperature of 500. Usually fired up to 350 and controlled by two vents - there is no flame. The high temperature caramelises the outer coating of the meat, with no harsh barbequed taste. But it's not just meat, we used it to cook asparagus, it reduces the cooking time and keeps all the flavour With such a demanding job how do you relax? I used to live in Lewisham but have moved out to Basildon with my family. I spend as much free time as I can with my children or working on the house. But I really enjoy eating out and it's good to see what's happening in the restaurant world. Lastly, anything new for the summer? Yes, we're working on a menu for a simple take away box for last minute alfresco dining on the heath or if our tables are fully booked diners can spill out on to the heath and still enjoy our food.

This year’s Greenwich+Docklands International Festival will recapture some of that amazing 2012 spirit which uplifted us all last year. The Festival’s completely free programme boasts the very best of UK and international outdoor arts - there’s nothing more exhilarating than soaking up European-style al-fresco theatre and dance against the incomparable backdrops of Royal Greenwich, Canary Wharf and Island Gardens. Back in 1996 when GDIF was born the idea of a cross-river festival seemed a bit of a wild dream. In those days there was no DLR and the only way of crossing the river at Greenwich was via the foot-tunnel. Sixteen years later the area is transformed and GDIF is now firmly established as one of not just London’s, but Europe’s leading festivals. Highlights this year include 'As the World Tipped' at the National Maritime Museum (21 and 22 June) a spectacular show featuring astonishing staging and aerial performance. The family-friendly 'Greenwich Fair' takes over the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich Park and Cutty Sark Gardens (21-23 June) with a huge programme of street arts including an unfolding mechanical menagerie, dance in a giant steel cage and a 1920s Prohibition Speakeasy. There will also be more street theatre on Island Gardens at the 'Island Fair' (21 – 23 June) with circus and dance on a roof garden and a fiery polemical production full of sway poles and aerialists from Graeae. This year’s Dancing City at Canary Wharf offers the UK’s biggest programme of outdoor dance including daily lunchtime performances (24 – 28 June) as well as the traditional full afternoon of outdoor dance on Saturday 29 June in which every conceivable dance style will come together – from ballet to whirling dervish. Offenbach's Comic Opera Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance brings Offenbach’s highly amusing Orpheus in the Underworld to Blackheath Halls. This irreverent parody follows the journey of Orpheus to Mount Olympus to demand back his unfaithful wife, Eurydice, from Pluto, God of the Underworld. But as Orpheus seeks out his wife, Jupiter also heads down to Hades to compete for the heart of the now bored prisoner. With a colourful cast of gods and goddesses, this comic opera reaches its climax with the celebrated ‘Can-Can’.
