Charlton Park Riding for the Disabled Association fell victim to their first robbery in over 20 years last month. On 5 March 16 children were denied their weekly riding lesson after thieves stole up to £500 worth of the charity’s equipment. Chief instructor of the group, Carol Kendall, discovered the break-in that morning after finding a bridal on the path near the pony pen in Maryon Wilson Animal Park, where the charity’s horses live. She wished the thieves a ‘miserable existence’ after their acts forced the instructor to cancel lessons. ‘Some of those children are in wheelchairs, and for them, this is their chance to get out and experience a different viewpoint.’ Local heroes, and sponsors of Charlton Park RDA, Sainsbury’s Greenwich, heard the news and donated Easter eggs to all of the children who missed out on their rides and £100 towards new bridals and head collars for the charity. If you would like to make a donation, or help in any way, please email the group at charltonparkrda@gmail.com

Bromley South Central Facelift A landmark development that will start to transform the town centre this month will provide first class leisure facilities for residents. The under-used 1960’s five-storey public car park on the 2.4 acre application site is being demolished as part of the proposal, along with other existing buildings on the Westmoreland Road site frontage. Developers, The Cathedral Group, plan to include a 9 screen cinema, 200 residential units, restaurants at plaza level, 130 bedroom hotel, lower ground car park with 400 spaces, a new junction onto Westmoreland Road, a bus turning area in Simpson’s Road, 300 secure cycle parking spaces and new civic space with street furniture.
Volunteers, sportspeople and community champions are among those who’ve been recognised and honoured for their outstanding contribution to the Royal Borough of Greenwich – winning a civic award in the first ceremony of its kind for the borough. The awards, made up of 10 categories, have been set up in Civic Week to honour individuals, organisations or businesses that have made an outstanding contribution to the social, economic and physical wellbeing of the Royal Borough. Of 202 nominations there have been 16 winners and 10 letters of commendation. Councillor Chris Roberts, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich said: ‘All of these people are an inspiration and it’s right that we should recognise the work they’ve put in which really does help to make the Royal Borough of Greenwich a better place.’

Ships of Stone: The Islands of Mervyn Peake
S
hips of Stone: The Islands of Mervyn Peake takes a new look at the work of the visionary artist, writer and illustrator by focusing on one of Peake’s lifelong obsessions: islands. This exhibition shows the landscapes and characters of the island emerging in his illustrations for Treasure Island (1949), his novel Mr Pye (1953) and in his descriptions of the metaphorical island of Gormenghast Castle. The exhibition uses audio recordings to bring Peake’s writings alive alongside objects and artworks that span his career, many of which are on public display for the first time. Mervyn Peake was born to Missionary parents in China and grew up there until the age of 11. In 1923 he started school at Eltham College, formerly the School for the Sons of Missionaries. By this point, he had learned Treasure Island, his favourite book, by heart and early stories, paintings and drawings reveal a thirst for adventure and a fascination with islands. The exhibition reveals and explores this ongoing fascination with islands that started in Eltham College and remained with him throughout his career. 23 March - 18 May 2013 Saturdays 12-4pm FREE ENTRY Gerald Moore Gallery at Eltham College, Mottingham Lane, London SE9 4RW Tel: 020 8857 0448, E: info@geraldmooregallery.org W: www.geraldmooregallery.org, T: @GeraldMooreGall The exhibition features many works which are on public display for the first time and is made possible thanks to major loans from The Estate of Mervyn Peake, The National Portrait Gallery and other public collections in the UK.

WALLPAPER CAN create a subtle background or be a bold addition. It allows you to express your individual style and adds instant character to any room –
whatever your design preference, wallpaper has it all. Seen as a ‘better’ alternative to paint, wall coverings are easy to install, maintain and remove. Advances in paste technology allow for easy installation and ensure that paper will adhere to walls for a long period of time. Most people believe once a room is papered it cannot adjust to changing styles and moods. But subtle designs such as stries (delicate patterns of thin tone-on-tone stripes), damask and stripes easily complement differing room styles. For example, a strie in a neutral color can add flair to an otherwise plain room without taking centre stage. Damask, elegant designs that include whimsical scrolling arabesques, add sophistication. The ever-popular stripe is yet another style which adds character to a room. With each of these design types you can change furniture and accent pieces to suit whatever theme you choose to create. Two popular wallpaper manufacturers – one more traditional and one contemporary – have new collections out for the spring, each with its own unique style. Natural forms and textured patterns are enhanced by Farrow & Ball’s traditional
craftsmanship, using real Farrow & Ball paints printed onto ground papers, giving a unique appearance and texture. Inspired by archive designs, these enticing papers are modern yet retain their traditional softness. Tessella (pictured left) is a truly geometric paper, its interlocking mosaic pattern inspired by a 19th century design. Some of the biggest names in design work with Graham and Brown to create stunning cutting-edge styles of wallpaper. Each designer brings his or her own style – from flamboyant Laurence LlewelynBowen to the modern pop art style of Barbara Hulanicki. ‘Goddess’, from the current Spellbound range, is pictured above. Choose the style and create a wall of art for yourself.

Gardening Take care of your…
bloomin’ garden APRIL IS A GREAT month in the garden – the soil is warming up and spring should now be in evidence, with daffodils in flower and blossoming trees. But do keep an eye on the weather forecast though, a cold snap or even snow are not unknown in April, even in the south of England. It is a good idea to keep horticultural fleece on standby to cover delicate plants in case of cold weather. Expect the inevitable ‘April showers’ but the frequent sunny days and rising temperatures too make it perfect gardening weather. It’s an exciting month, with indoor-sown seeds well into growth, and it’s also time to start sowing outdoors. Just watch out for frosts!
TOP 10 JOBS THIS MONTH • Keep weeds under control • Protect fruit blossom from late frosts • Tie in climbing and rambling roses • Sow hardy annuals and herb seeds • Start to feed citrus plants • Increase the water given to houseplants • Feed hungry shrubs and roses • Sow new lawns or repair bare patches • Prune fig trees • Divide bamboos and water lilies If you need to dry out your soil further before sowing seed outside, you can speed up the natural drying process by about two weeks by lightly cultivating the soil. Covering it with fleece, cloches, or plastic, will warm the ground, improving the germination of seeds. The small rise in temperature of the soil can make a big difference. Do remember the weeds are springing into action, so keep the hoe going. Don’t forget, a sharp hoe is the best friend a gardener can have. Just slide it back and forth slightly below the surface of the soil and you’ll stop the weed seedlings in their tracks. Hoeing is also good in the event of drought as the disturbed soil surface stops the water being sucked to the surface by capillary action and evaporating in dry winds. After such a cold, wet winter roll on a dry, hot summer.

Education
BLACKHEATH HIGH SCHOOL PUPIL
Classics
I
n March’s issue of Meridian, it was interesting to read the views of the Headmaster of a local school on the teaching of Classical languages in preference to Mandarin. At Blackheath High School we consider them to be of equal importance. As a school with traditional values, successfully coupled with a forward looking approach to education, we aim to make sure that our girls are well prepared for successful working lives. This includes giving them the opportunity to study both Latin and at least two modern languages, including Mandarin. Some of you may have seen the survey released last year by the CBI which emphasized the importance of Mandarin, reporting that it was second only to French as the language they hoped that potential employees would possess. Mrs Laws, Headteacher of Blackheath High School, says 'We recognise that China plays an increasingly important role in the global economy and that it is vital that
or Mand arin?
we equip our students with the language skills to compete and succeed in the modern world. Since 2005, our pupils have been given the opportunity to study Mandarin as one of their two language choices, from Year 7. However, we also believe that learning Latin is very important. It helps develop English language skills and supports the learning of other European languages. Latin and Classical Greek demand close linguistic reasoning and attention to detail, and the intellectual flexibility to cope with inflected words and word order. It is also very interesting in its own right.' At Blackheath High, girls are taught Latin from Year 6 to Year 9 and can choose to continue studying through to GCSE and A level. Classical Greek is also offered at GCSE. We are delighted that our girls achieve excellent results in both Mandarin and Latin. With around 3,000 characters needed to read a newspaper, many view Mandarin as being very difficult to learn; this myth has been successfully dispelled at BHS. Our girls have found that the language isn’t as complicated as it first appears - there is only a present tense and the structure is quite simple. As it is a tonal language, children are naturally able to hear tonal differences because their hearing is more acute. We give careful thought to tailoring our curriculum to ensure that our pupils are well equipped for the world of work. Current Reception Class pupils won’t start their working lives until about 2030, therefore, we need to prepare them for jobs that don’t yet exist and ensure that they have the skills, competencies and qualities that will make them attractive to employers in a global economy. Learning Mandarin will help with this. For more information visit: www.blackheathhighschool.gdst.net

KING'S ROCHESTER - PRINCIPAL AND PUPILS
King's Rochester A community wher

h
FOUNDED IN 604 AD, King’s has evolved into an outstanding 21st century school for 3 to 18 year old boys and girls with excellent facilities at all levels. Academic standards are high - just look at the Key Stage 1 and 2, GCSE and A Level results - parents celebrate the way King’s supports their children to achieve top academic results - but without being an examination hothouse. King’s is a school with a broad-ability intake and recognises that every child is unique with talents and strengths which may extend far beyond the classroom. With its cathedral links, music is a great strength at King’s but it has also recently acquired the former Stirling Sports Centre on Maidstone Road, Rochester, which, after a half million pound refurbishment, will provide King’s pupils – and the local community who share it – with some of the best sporting facilities in the South East. Principal, Jeremy Walker is proud that the school’s strapline, 'A community that enables individuals to flourish', is central to everything it does. Pupils look forward to showing you around at the school’s next Open Day on Friday 10 May from 4.30pm to 7pm and Principal, Jeremy Walker, will speak at 4.45pm and 6.30pm. There is no need to book, but, should you have any questions please contact registrar, Lynne Davies, on 01634 888590 or email on admissions@kings-rochester.co.uk. www.kings-rochester.co.uk

Urban Chess East Village, Stratford – the first legacy neighbourhood from the Olympic Games – announced its sponsorship for free chess lessons and chess sets in schools across the London Borough of Newham. A total of 14 Newham Schools, in association with Chess in Schools and the Communities (CSC) and Newham Council will be part of The 'Urban Chess' programme, which is planned to expand to all 64 primary schools in the borough by 2015 with the aim of teaching every child in Newham how to play the world's most enduring game. Pic credit: Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, joined the British Champion Grandmaster Gawain Jones to host a morning of chess for local school children and teachers.
ELTHAM COLLEGE
Eltham College sing their way into the final Singers from both the Junior and Senior Schools travelled to the Barbican in early March to compete in the finals of the National Schools Choir Competition organised by Barnardo's. Almost three hundred choirs entered the competition, which is open to schools nationally. The Grange Choir from the Junior School were one of 18 Junior School choirs to be selected for the final, and the Senior School Chamber Choir was one of 6 schools to be selected from the Senior School Category. The Junior School Grange Choir went on to be placed second in their category and crowned national runners-up. Mr Paul Henderson, Headmaster of Eltham College said, “To be selected for the finals was an impressive achievement in itself. Going on to be placed second nationally is tremendous and testimony to the boys’ hard work.”
Colfe's is expanding
COLFE''S SCHOOL
The Pre-Prep department at Colfe’s is due to expand next year. Judged “outstanding” by successive ISI inspection teams, the Pre-Prep has seen demand outstrip supply for many years. The expanded and enhanced facilities will cater for an additional 20 pupils in each year group and provide a dedicated assembly hall, amongst other things. Colfe’s Pre-Prep pupils will continue to benefit from the range of facilities available to the whole school, including the sports centre and full-size swimming pool. Sarah Redman, Head of Pre-Prep and Nursery, was delighted with the Governors’ decision to expand. Waiting lists have been reopened and further information is available from the Registrar, Sarah Walker, admissions@colfes.com
BROMLEY HIGH
Bromley High School girls in Years 5-8 joined forces to take part in an exciting, challenging and funpacked cross-phase curriculum enrichment day. They were able to explore and create in an interdisciplinary manner and learn beyond subject boundaries. The girls were able to make connections between different areas of their learning by getting them to work together on a variety of projects following the theme 'Man and Machine' with some groups focussing on flight, wind farms or code breaking.

Business
Do you know who will take control if you are no longer able to do so? Asks Kalpa Prajapati, solicitor at Blackheath and Greenwich Solicitors, Grant Saw. Usually, if you wish legally to appoint someone else to manage your affairs, you can provide a General Power of Attorney. However, this ceases to be valid if the person giving the power (the donor) becomes incapable of managing their own affairs. So who takes control if you are no longer able to do so? A new type of power was introduced by the Mental Capacity Act 2005 called a Lasting Power of Attorney (“LPA”) (which has replaced the Enduring Power of Attorney), called as such because it “lasts” past the point that the donor loses mental capacity. There are two types of LPA, one in relation to the donor’s property and
financial affairs and another in relation to their health and welfare. An LPA for Financial Affairs gives an attorney the authority to deal with a donor’s property and financial affairs as specified. An LPA for Health and Welfare allows an attorney to make welfare and healthcare decisions on a donor’s behalf when they no longer have capacity to do so, and can extend to giving or refusing life-sustaining treatment, so it can be really useful if you have specific wishes in this regard. Accordingly, it is important that a donor thinks carefully about who they wish to have as their attorney, as they will be making important decisions on a donor’s behalf. It is a way to ensure that the people you trust will be able to make important decisions for you if you become mentally or physically unable to do so yourself. While LPAs are most often used to deal with the affairs of the elderly, if they are prepared much earlier in life they will give the same protection in the case of incapacity due to an accident or illness. An LPA does not restrict your right to control your affairs for as long as you feel able, it just means there is someone else to take over if required. If there is no LPA in place and the donor’s mental capacity has failed, then all is not lost! The alternative is to apply to the Court of Protection in order to appoint a Deputy to manage the person’s affairs, although this can be time-consuming and certainly more expensive to arrange, than putting an LPA in place. Elderly
Future Proofing Make planning ahead work for you, says Nanette Fielding
The buzz phase at the moment is ‘Future Proofing’, adapting your home so as you get older you don’t have to move. When people buy a home they will buy it with their family's needs in mind, but planning for old age and whatever may befall them isn't going to be the first thing they think of. Our homes mean more to us than just bricks and mortar: people want to be able to grow old in their own home. You need a home which changes as your needs change. Many of the homes in the UK have lots of stairs, lowlevel electrical sockets and traditional baths that you have to climb into, which simply aren't suited to an ageing population. Growing old is something most of us avoid thinking about, but we have to face the fact that we will have to re-design our homes to meet our changing needs if we are to remain independent for as long as possible. Maintaining mobility in the home becomes more important as we get older, especially the challenge of moving between floors when stairs become too difficult to use. The Helen Hamlyn Research Centre at the Royal College of Art looked at how older people adapt their homes to suit their changing needs and abilities. Their most recent study will shape the stair lift of the future.
In the United States and Sweden, homebuilders are already designing family homes that will also accommodate the needs of the occupants in later life. In the UK, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has created a number of 'Lifetime' homes in Hull. These have a range of design features such as wider doors and ramps instead of front doorsteps to make life easier. The emphasis is on accessibility and the homes are flexible enough to meet whatever comes along in life. For a relatively low cost you could adapt your home and remain independent for much longer. Kitchens and bathrooms usually need the most work. Transforming cupboard storage into drawer storage avoids bending and stretching into low cupboards, so to will investing in an oven at waist height. Even simple things such as changing the shape of the cupboard door handle makes it easier to grasp than knobs. For the bathroom, a shower fitted with a seat, grab rails and an anti-scalding device can make a real difference. It is never too early to start thinking about future-proofing a home, research has found that if people put it off until they are in their 70s, they then don't want the hassle of builders and workmen in their home. Why not invest in your home while you can, and enjoy an easier life now, and in the years ahead.

hen will spring arrive? Having caught a glimpse of my reflection I can see that the recent wintery weather with cold, biting winds has taken its toll on my face. It looks dull and drawn and those laughter lines are not funny any more. I’ve come to the newly restyled Reebok Spa at Canary Wharf to try a facial that promises to transform my ageing skin into a more youthful appearance. A tall order but my therapist, Frankie is more optimistic. The treatment starts with a steam deep cleanse, the warm steam opening the pores and clearing the congestion. That is followed by a creamy wash with Papaya Enzymes, which gently exfoliates the skin. Then a hydrating toner locks in moisture and helps to soften the skin, preparing it for the facial treatment, which follows. Frankie has chosen the Murad Intensive Wrinkle Reducer Rapid Peel, which is anti-ageing as it reduces the appearance of wrinkles with powerful exfoliators and infused long lasting hydration. The deep exfoliating Glycolic Peel with Vitamin A facial mask is left on for a few minutes and has a tingling sensation. Follow up treatments can extend the time the mask is left on giving a more intense ‘peel’. The removal of the dead skin cells leaves the skin brighter, smoother and firmer. After the mask a rich, non-greasy moisturiser is applied and I’m left to enjoy a relaxing siesta on the heated treatment bed, far from the madding crowds of Canary Wharf’s shopping malls. Bliss… And my skin looks smooth, is line free and definitely looks more youthful. I’m all for pushing back the years, who isn’t? By Valerie Breese

Nothing but the Tooth
Teresa Debono, practice manager at Smile Impressions in Lee, on the importance of dental hygiene
S
ome people think it’s normal if your gums bleed while brushing or flossing. It’s not. This is a leading symptom of periodontal disease and needs to be looked at by your dentist or better still hygienist. Compare your gum tissue to the skin on the back of your hand. If your hand bled every time you touched it, would you ignore it? Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that affects the soft and hard structures that support the teeth. In its early stage, called gingivitis, the gums become swollen and red due to inflammation, which is the body’s natural response to the presence of harmful bacteria. In the more serious form of periodontal disease called periodontitis, the gums pull away from the tooth and supporting gum tissues are destroyed. Chronic periodontitis, the most advanced form of the disease, progresses relatively slowly in most people and is typically more evident in adulthood. Although inflammation as a result of a bacterial infection is behind all forms of periodontal disease, a variety of factors can influence the severity of the disease. Important risk factors include inherited or genetic susceptibility, smoking, lack of adequate home care, age, diet, health history, and medications. Add periodontal disease to the long list of conditions that smoking can cause – cancer, heart disease, strokes and low birth weight infants. If the bacteria that contribute to plaque and gum disease enter your bloodstream through bleeding gums, they can travel to your heart and this could cause blood clots. This can also become a serious condition for diabetics. Many people don’t know they have periodontal disease because they expect it to be painful or have some obvious outward sign. The best way to know if you are suffering from this condition is to visit your dentist/dental hygienist regularly. Periodontal disease causes your gums to recede, loosening your teeth, and if untreated, eventually causes them to fall out. If this happens to you, the good news is that dental implants can be used to replace any teeth you are missing. The better news is that it can often be prevented with the right treatment in the early stages.

The benefits of soft water YOUR STUNNING designer bathroom or kitchen will look amazing only for as long as it takes for the effects of hard water to show. The glass shower enclosure becomes dull, the showerhead clogs and stainless steel units lose their shine. All this leads to hours of extra cleaning with harsh chemicals in an effort to recapture the original look. Hard water, so called because of the quantities of dissolved minerals it contains, is ubiquitous in London and the south east and gives rise to a number of problems – from unsightly watermarks to unseen damage to
domestic appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, irons and kettles. Hard water can also affect our hair and skin: when we wash, it leaves a residue that leads to dull, lifeless and unmanageable hair and can exacerbate skin conditions such as eczema. When hard water is heated, dissolved calcium and magnesium forms scale in pipes which, in addition to narrowing and potentially clogging the pipes, prevents efficient heat transfer. A water heater with just 6mm of scale will increase the cost of water heating by 50%. A TwinTec water softener rids your hard water of unwanted minerals and unpleasant side effects. And, unlike other home improvements, the savings provided by a water softener mean that it can pay for itself within two to four years. HOW IS HARD WATER SOFTENED? The TwinTec water softener removes dissolved minerals by passing the water through millions of resin beads. The minerals are attracted to the resin and are left behind when the water passes through the system, coming out completely free of ‘hardness’.
The resin is then washed clean by a ‘regeneration’ process whereby a brine solution is passed through it, flushing the hard minerals to the drain and leaving the resin refreshed and ready to attract more hard minerals. WHY CHOOSE A TWINTEC WATER SOFTENER? The TwinTec is a non-electrical water-operated system. The obvious difference between an ordinary softener and the TwinTec is that our water softener has two cylinders rather than one. This makes the regeneration process much more efficient. The TwinTec uses the flow of water to operate the control module, which manages fluctuations in water demand in the household. There is no need for an electrical supply, for a programming system or, indeed, any maintenance – other than keeping it topped up with blocks of salt. The quantity of salt you need depends on the level of your water usage. Meridian Water Softeners, 8 The Village, Charlton SE7 8UD | 020 8319 0555. www.twintec.com

COMPETITION
After more than three years of disruption caused by the Network Rail construction project, it has finally come to an end, and Three Crown Square, the largest trading area in the heart of Borough Market has been transformed from building site into one of the most impressive market spaces in the country. The result is a new layout designed to enhance the shopping experience and make navigation more intuitive, but without removing the thrill of discovery. The wide passageways and impressive new stalls of the refurbished Three Crown Square will be devoted purely to produce including fruit and vegetables, meat, fish and cheese, which will make shopping for ingredients far simpler, while the other trading spaces around the Market’s periphery will retain their colourful and eclectic blend of different foodstuffs and flavours from all over the world. Open for lunch Mon - Wed10am – 3pm. Full Market Thurs 11am – 5pm, Friday 12noon – 6pm & Sat 8am – 5pm.

Is 3 years old!
R!
Just our way of saying thank you... Terms and conditions apply.
You know a restaurant means business when, after three years, it has won multiple awards, been given column space in the Sunday Telegraph, and opened its third restaurant. Panas Gurhka certainly can’t be taken with a pinch of salt.
T
his April Panas Gurkha celebrate their 3rd Anniversary; during that time Donald Strachan, travel and lifestyle writer for named the awardwinning restaurant as a personal favourite for truly authentic Nepalese cuisine, they have won the 2011 award for healthy eating, followed by the Just Eat 2012 and 2013 award for high customer service. With this string of successes behind them
a second restaurant - Bombay Dine - was opened in Lavender Hill in 2011, and this year Panas Gurkha's Kitchen opened in Grove Park. As with all fine restaurants, it isn't just the sensational food that makes a memorable meal, but the entire dining experience. Owner Sujan has taken inspiration from working with leading names in the industry, including twice Michelin starred celebrity chef Atul Kochhar and restaurateur Das Sreedharan, from the Naked Chef. Sujan started his cooking career in 1998 when he graduated in India with a degree in hospitality, and has brought his experience and rigorous high standards to each of his restaurants. For diners who want a healthy meal which still punches with flavour, Panas' menu was formed around eating healthily. Quite simply, this boils down to their knowledge and understanding of food and only using high quality, freshly prepared ingredients, and knowing where they are sourced from.
Rather than opting for modern approaches to the dishes served, great pride is taken in recreating traditional authentic cuisine; respecting the history and heritage the vast Nepalese and Indian regions add to a delicious menu. Come along to Panas Gurkha this month, celebrate with them in style and sample the finest authentic Nepalese and Indian cuisine in South East London. 318 Lee High Road SE13 5PJ, 020 8852 9891 www.panas.co.uk | FREE HOME DELIVERY

Travelling recipes Food blogger Chris Scheuer shares one of her favourite recipes with Meridian
THE CAFE SUCRE FARINE
STRAWBERRY BALSAMIC PIZZA WITH CHICKEN, SWEET ONION AND SMOKED BACON THEY SAY THAT ‘NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION’ but for me it might be a bit more precise to change the saying to, ‘Mother Hubbard is the mother of invention’… You see this pizza was created one day when I was feeling a bit like old Mother Hubbard. I hadn't been to the grocery store in quite a while and when I perused the fridge shortly before dinner one evening there wasn't much to be had. I saw one lonely chicken breast, a bit of leftover bacon, a few strawberries and an assortment of condiments, that was it - other than a little cheese. But behold, among the condiments was a lovely jar of Strawberry Jam. Gazing upon the ruby-red sweet jam got my imagination going and the rest of the story is this pizza. I know it sounds quite unique, well maybe even a little odd, but this pizza is truly fantastic, thanks to Mother Hubbard! INGREDIENTS: • 4oz/114gms strawberry jam or preserves, I used my Strawberry-Pineapple Freezer Jam • 2 fl.oz/60mls balsamic vinegar • 1 teaspoon chili sauce • 1 ball pizza dough, your favorite or this recipe or a purchased roll of dough • 8oz/228gms diced or shredded chicken breast, from rotisserie chicken or left over chicken of any kind • 4oz/114gms smoked bacon, cut in 1” pieces, cooked and drained
• 4oz/114gms thin sliced sweet onion • 12oz/342gms shredded Italian blend cheese, or use a mix of Italian cheeses • 2oz/57gms fresh coriander, finely chopped • 2oz/57gms fresh strawberries, diced small DIRECTIONS: 1. Place pizza stone or sheet pan on middle rack of oven. Preheat to 230°C/gas mark 8. 2. Place balsamic vinegar in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer 4 to 5 minutes or until reduced to half of the original volume and mixture is thick and syrupy. Add strawberry preserves and chilli sauce mix well. Set aside to cool. 3. Pat or roll out pizza dough on a lightly floured surface to approximately a 14” circle. Place a piece of parchment paper, slightly larger than your dough on a pizza peel or an upside down sheet pan. Sprinkle parchment paper lightly with cornmeal. 4. Combine chicken with 2 tablespoons of the balsamic-strawberry mixture and mix to coat all chicken with sauce. Pour rest of sauce onto pizza dough and spread to cover. Leave a 1” border all around the edge. Scatter chicken evenly over the sauce. 5. Place about 3/4 of the cheese on top of dough and spread to cover sauce evenly. Scatter bacon and sweet onion over cheese to distribute evenly. Scatter remaining cheese over this layer. 6. Slide parchment paper with pizza on top onto stone or cookie sheet. Bake for approximately 8-10 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and crust is golden brown. Watch carefully, at this temperature it is easy to burn the pizza! 7. Remove from oven and let cool slightly, 1-2 minutes. Sprinkle with chopped coriander and fresh diced strawberries. Serve and enjoy! SPIRIT OF SUMMER FAIR
Al fresco dining is simply ‘eating outdoors’. It adds a lively and enjoyable dimension to dining and gets you out of the house into the fresh, open air, encouraging a good appetite and an appreciation for the slower pace of life. Choose a pretty secluded part of the garden, not too far from the house and set up your table. You don’t need your best china as mix and match adds to the charm. Load the garden chairs with cushions for comfort and warmth, as it can still be a little chilly in the early evenings, add a few lanterns for ambient light and you’re good to go. Just add plenty of food, guests and enjoy. If you would prefer there are plenty of cafés, bars and restaurants that spill outdoors when the weather permits. Though for every sun-trap terrace there's a café with tables plonked next to traffic lights so it helps to pick your spot. Our local Parks make the perfect spot for an alfresco stop and more and more are sporting new cafes with delicious home made dishes, perfect for a tranquil break. Pull up a chair, peruse the menu and indulge in the popular past time of people watching.

Wine tasting at Chapters Carolyn Bosworth Davies drinks up The white wines from Ramon Bilbao, especially the Verdejo from Rueda, had good minerality and zesty acidity, but their reds, I felt, showed better – especially the Limited Edition 2009 Rioja. This is a really delicious and elegant wine made from 100% Tempranillo from 80 to 100 year old vines. It has great strawberry fruit character with good intensity and restrained oak and spice flavours. It was superb with the mini venison burger… so much so that I had to buy half a dozen bottles! From the contented murmurings around me I’m sure many others agreed, and enjoyed the evening enormously. Many will certainly return for the next event in the spring – so make sure you book early! For a short course on Essential Wine Tasting my next five-week sessions start on 22 April at Mycenae House. DESIGN SERVICES
LAST MONTH Chapters All-Day Dining in Blackheath launched a new initiative for its customers. This was what general manager, Philip Urasala, called ‘a different dimension to Chapters’, one that would over the next year, place greater emphasis on the beverage aspect of the restaurant’s offering. This would result in more wine promotions, events and opportunities to buy wine from their independent wine specialists, wines rarely available on the high street, at competitive retail prices. I attended the first wine event, which featured wines from two widely contrasting producers: New Zealand’s South Island winery Mount Difficulty and Spain’s Ramon Bilbao, a producer of both Rioja and Rueda. The tasting was well attended. It was very competitively priced for a tasting that gave 14 different wines to sample, accompanied by some substantial, tasty and beautifully presented canapés. The representatives from the wineries were not winemakers but sales and marketing ambassadors, however their knowledge for what was a wine event rather than a pure wine tasting, was pitched just right for the level of interest of those attending. Clearly the aim of these events is to get people to try wines from different grapes and from varied regions and see how well they match with food. Tasting sheets were provided with all the details concerning the wines, and we were given plenty of time to enjoy the wines, ask questions and make notes. It was a very relaxed and enjoyable way for people to be introduced to new wines and flavours in an informal restaurant setting. Mount Difficulty is a fine Central Otago winery, one of the pioneers in this area, a region on the climatic edge of vine growing. There is a great purity to their wines and I have long been an admirer. On the evening the Pinot Gris showed very well with the food. It is a dry style which has great texture and spice.

We have celebrity chefs, countless books and hours of television programmes on food but you can’t beat the real thing. Meridian has taken a quick bite of the best and new culinary delights plus a reader competition to win either dinner or a take away of the British favourite food: a curry! Jamie's Italian likes to create an environment with a neighbourhood feel and this location in the heart of Greenwich fits well with their ethos of a friendly and comfortable restaurant. The menu at Jamie’s Italian will follow the style of the brand, which is simple and rustic Italian cuisine. The sort of food an Italian would eat at home with a little twist to some dishes to keep things fresh and exciting. Along with a few daily specials, the Greenwich branch will also see the opening of the first Jamie’s Italian London Deli with fresh pasta, cured meats and cheeses.
WIN! MOGUL RESTAURANT and Meridian have teamed up to offer one lucky reader the chance to win a meal worth £50, to eat in the restaurant or from the Mogul Home Dining Kitchen. This offer comes at an exciting time, as the Mogul Restaurant is about to launch a brand new Wine and Spice concept, pairing their food with wines to compliment each other. Or if you want to eat in the comfort of your own home then you can have dinner delivered straight to your front door as a takeaway.
ADMIRAL’S HOUSE OPENS The Old Royal Naval College (ORNC) in Greenwich has launched a new venue for the corporate and meeting market. Set on the banks of the River Thames, Admiral’s House is part of one of the oldest buildings on the site and has since entertained important visitors, including Admiral Lord Nelson. Today the house offers six, newly refurbished meeting rooms, ranging in size for 10 to 70 delegates. Each room is suitable for meetings, training seminars and boardroom lunches and is named after an architect who shaped the ORNC’s world-famous buildings and landscape. Admiral’s House can also be hired exclusively or in conjunction with larger venues, such as the King William or Queen Mary Undercroft. ycling has become a much more fashionable method of transport in London in recent times. This is because it is as expensive as you want it to be, being only the cost of your equipment, which is especially important in today’s economic climate, with the rising price of petrol. Londoners are now being actively encouraged to cycle; this can be seen by the increasing amount of Barclays hire bikes or ‘Boris bikes’ as they are more affectionately known, as well as more designated cycle routes throughout London. Cycling is also a great way to get fit, especially after any resolutions made for 2013, which have probably gone by the wayside already. With all these factors in mind, I decided that it was a great idea to take my bike out and go along the Thames cycle path on what would normally have been a lazy Sunday afternoon. Starting at the Thames Barrier with a final destination of the Cutty Sark took me along a route of about six miles. Going along the riverside was lovely, with the crisp smell of sea air on the nose and it was peaceful
enough to hear the cawing of the seagulls. For people who aren’t afraid of heights, the Thames Barrier is just a stone’s throw away from The Reach, one of the largest indoor climbing walls in the UK, located in the Mellish Industrial Park. Back in the saddle, the route goes past the Greenwich Yacht Club, through Greenwich Millennium Village. Located here is Café Pura, a place to stop for a coffee and to satisfy the needs of a vegetarian. The route continues around the Millennium Dome, with stunning views of Canary Wharf and the surrounding buildings of Docklands. The only drawback was that at the Blackwall Tunnel, the riverside route is on temporary diversion to the inland route, which involves going past the tunnel entrance, always busy with cars. On the upside, it means going past the Greenwich Meantime Brewery, which is open for tours. This also means a chance to explore some of the idyllic back streets of Greenwich, and even unearth a gem of a pub. However, Meridian is not advocating drinking and cycling as it is an

offence to be in an unfit state and in charge of a cycle, but the law is slightly more relaxed than it is with motorised vehicles. The pub in question is the Pelton Arms, a great place to make a quick pit stop; it has an outstanding selection of wines! Nearing the centre of Greenwich means rejoining the riverside for more great views of the Docklands scenery. Then, as the route comes to an end, it goes through the picturesque Royal Naval College and past the ideal place to finish at for a late lunch, the Old Meantime Brewery, located just before the Cutty Sark. Both the restaurant and the café have great menus and when summer finally arrives, the garden will be delightful to dine in, and it obviously has a selection of locally brewed beers.

On stage Greenwich Theatre’s artistic director, James Haddrell, reveals what's on this Easter
If you caught my interview in the last issue you’ll know I’m passionate about children's theatre, so I’ve picked out some of the highlights coming up in the area this Easter. Whether your children want to sit back and enjoy a show or get stuck into a theatre workshop, families really are going to be spoilt this year. The Greenwich Children's Theatre Festival (until 14 April) has become one of the most important children’s festivals in the country, with two world premieres this year and a host of shows across the borough. It’s not just shows, though - on Sat 13 April The Big Workshop Day is a borough wide programme of free workshops for all ages, with everything from puppetry to stage combat.

GREENWICH THEATRE
NICE > The Family Cabaret at Greenwich Dance (13 April) is now an annual feature - there’ll be dance, music and circus acts to entertain all ages, and it’s a great taster for parents who might fancy booking for the 20th Birthday Cabaret coming up in May. Sensacional at The Albany looks set to be absolutely fantastic – it’s an interactive and playful theatre experience designed especially for the very young theatre goer. (21 April) For teenagers, it’s worth seeking out the Throwdown at the Tramshed (4 April), a chance to try your hand as a DJ or a beatboxer, or heading over to the British Music Experience at the O2 where Rock The Ages (8, 9, 12 Apr) an open jam session for young people, will give you a chance to learn from some of the biggest music of the last 70 years. If that’s not enough, later in the month an astounding new production of The Snow Queen is heading to Greenwich Theatre. Fresh from a tour of India, come and see a brand new version of Hans Christian Andersen’s magical tale, and let it transport you to a land rich in colour, music, unforgettable imagery and Bollywood glamour.

Tom Dale Company presents... The production Refugees of the Septic Heart reflects the heartbeat of a nation as it perches on the brink of change. At times philosophical and provocative, six dancers search for a society freed of greed, manipulation and control. Gritty physicality and decaying urban sounds evolve into an optimistic undercurrent of mischievous, spirited and irrepressible movement. Don’t miss out on this exhilarating new dance piece, which is already wowing the critics, as it unites animation, spoken word and inventive choreography in a feast of visuals, movement and music. 19-20 April. 7.30pm.
