Gary, who still works from a studio in the SFSA artists’ community in Woolwich Dockyard, won the award for his 2012 mosaic encrusted sculpture ‘Entwined Histories’. Saved The Con FOR THE PAST 132 YEARS the Blackheath Conservatoire has fostered quality art and music in the community for generations of local residents. Like many charities, the Conservatoire has struggled to survive the recession and was under threat. But with the generosity of the local community they have raised £200,000 in less than six weeks, surpassing its target of £175,000 and avoiding the threat of immediate foreclosure. ‘The community response has been simply amazing says the Conservatoire’s Chief Executive, Sydney Thornbury.

HAIR TRENDS Simple and striking are two ways to describe the tightly wound knots of hair seen on the runway at London fashion week. To achieve the low chignon style yourself, first master your twist, blow-dry hair straight, create a clean centre parting, if wanted, and secure hair into a firm ponytail at the nape, spritzing with shine mist. From there, you can wrap the tail into any number of looks - a loop with the ends pointing up or tucked under, a round ballet bun, or the classic double knot - all sealed with a shot of anti-frizz spray. With long hair there is an increased demand for beautiful plaits – whether it’s simple or intricate, for a wedding or a walk in the park, plaits will continue to be a sought after hairstyle. Don’t think that every plait has to be perfect; in fact, the idea of the ‘messy plait’ is here to stay! Vintage hairstyles are on the way and perfect for mid length hair: the look is elegant and classic and can be 'glammed up' for a beautiful wedding hair do or made casual with a headband or scarf! We’ve been waiting for pin curls to make their comeback! While there will still be plenty of ladies growing out their locks ready for the summer there has been a sharp increase in the number of short hairstyles since the premier of Les Miserables, whether it’s the softer Ann Hathaway look or the 'hard rocker' look, like Miley Cyrus. Call your hairdresser now!

B~BROWN In this day and age, there is no need to grow old gracefully. There are many treatments available on the market which reduce lines and wrinkles, but nothing is as quick or targeted as anti-wrinkle injections (botox). At B~Brown we offer this treatment administered by a doctor in our discreet, private beauty rooms. Or if you’d like to treat your skin to some pampering after a harsh winter, come along and try our new Dermalogica® facial. Even your skin tone, improve its texture and feel radiant this Easter.

Print crazy A burst of colour announces the arrival of Spring… Followers of fashion want to know what they will be adding to their wardrobe this season, Says Nanette Fielding AFTER BANISHING the winter’s dark colours, prints emerged on the spring/ summer catwalks, hot hues to striking monochrome stripes, and florals in every incarnation from delicate buds to exploding blooms, as well as fashion’s newest innovation – techno prints, inspired and influenced by computer generated designs as technology and textile design collide. The phrase ‘something for everyone’ comes to mind as this season's fashion statements will suit everyone. Fans of colour will be delighted as spring/ summer13 is bright with vibrant shades of blue, orange, yellow and green – worn on their own, or combined. If you like 1980s neon or sugary pastels, then this is for you. Silhouettes have been relaxed, even modest: fluttering blouses and floral print trousers, easy jackets and pretty pencil skirts. If sportswear was an influence, it was miles away from the unforgiving bodycon of previous seasons. The retro sports look seen on soft jersey varsity bombers and denim sweat dresses continues to be popular. If those digital prints are too OTT for your style, take spring’s big, bold, uncomplicated stripes for a spin instead. Marc Jacobs kicked off the whole thing with his monochrome stripes. Other designers were thinking linear this season and squares and checkerboard prints were the result. Stripes with denim, and they’re all-American; with navy, they’re nauticalchic; and worn head-to-toe, they’re just plain cool. As an added bonus you’ll definitely be able to wear them for seasons, even years to come as they’re a classic. Louis Vuitton bags were petite, square boxes in matching stripes, and shoes were either kitten heeled or completely flat. 'Mod' and 'sixties' were the buzzwords – think Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton for the look. The good news is that most of the stock is in the stores now. The bad news? Will it be warm enough to wear it?

DESIGN SERVICES

Cashbrokers Bromley opened its doors last October and ever since have been helping the people of Bromley with their financial needs. The shop is run by local people, ensuring that the personal touch is given to everyone who walks through the door. Cashbrokers focuses on alternative lending services for those who do not wish to use or can’t use high street banks and do not want to go down the unadvisable route of using loan sharks. Pawn broking is just one of the services they offer, which is the lending of money for up to 6 months, secured against your gold and jewellery, meaning you can get no further in to debt as it is against goods you already own. Pawn broking has provided a service to those in need of short term lending for centuries, dating back as far as 1450 where the Franciscan Monks provided a service to the people of Perugia, Italy. It is also a known fact that Queen Isabella of Spain pawned items to fund the travels of Christopher Columbus to the Indies. Cashbrokers also has a modern form of lending known as buyback, which is the lending of cash on lesser value goods such as electricals to cope with modern day technologies and the luxuries the general population now own. Cashbrokers are specialist gold and jewellery buyers and, with the

Valerie Breese visits The London Door Company On a crisp morning in February I parked up outside the Penge office of The London Door Company. I wasn’t exactly sure whether I was expecting an Aladdin’s cave of thousands of doors or perhaps a dusty artisan’s workshop. I was, however, pleased to find a clean and crisp modern showroom and a warm welcome. I had arranged to meet James Williamson who runs this most recent addition to The London Door Company’s list of showrooms. Once I was comfortably settled with a coffee in hand, James was happy to explain that all the doors are made to order in the company’s own workshops in Wimbledon, and that the showroom had been carefully set up to show all the various details that can be used to recreate almost any London door style. I quickly learned how different doors suit different periods of house and from the many photos dotted around the room it’s clear the difference a door can make. While we were talking a couple with two young children popped in to take a look. I could see they were not exactly sure what to expect either, but James quickly welcomed the family and set about getting some toys to occupy the children. With a few well thought-out questions from James, the couple were soon shown a door that they agreed not only matched their house but fulfilled the requirements for a particular glass and even paint colour. I could see they were now really getting a picture of exactly what could be achieved. James went on to talk through a range of timbers including Accoya® - which apparently has up to 85% better stability than teak, with the added benefit of being entirely ecologically friendly – the supply and fitting of locks and furniture, the essential draught-proofing and even a choice of paint finishes. After arranging a meeting the following evening for James to pop by and measure up and talk costs it was clear that they were looking forward to their new front door. The approach at The London Door Company is very informative and professional, while being approachable and inclusive. I very much enjoyed my London Door experience and I can see that with 30 years of making doors behind them the passion is still alive. So for lovely doors, expert advice and a warm welcome visit or call for an appointment. The London Door Company 67 High St, SE20 7HW 020 8634 4080 www.londondoor.co.uk

Getting the home ready to put it on the market...

I

Kerb appeal

n a buyer’s market doing everything you possibly can to give your house the ‘edge’ over the competition could mean the difference between selling or not. The view from the road is the first impression prospective buyers get and it should be inviting. Your house may need just a quick makeover, from a new front gate, weeds removed from the garden and new plants planted, to a repointing of the front wall or fixing a wobbly flagstone. Do find a way to camouflage the wheelie bins if they have to live in the front garden. After a cold wet winter the paintwork will look dull and painted walls may have a green patina, which should be scrubbed away. A coat of paint will brighten the look of the house and give it ‘kerb appeal’. The front door should look solid and in good shape… and don’t let your windows let you down. If you have maintained your home on a regular basis there shouldn’t be too much to be done, but sometimes we put things off until tomorrow and don’t get round to fixing simple faults that then become larger problems. New buyers don’t want to buy a home that will cost them more money as soon as they move in. Windows tend to be neglected the most; if you have timber frames they are very durable and if taken care of will last for decades, but they will require periodic maintenance. Rattling, ill-fitting drafty windows can easily be remedied, but if the windows are old and rotten it will be time to replace them with new well-fitted sashes. If the box frames are salvageable and in good condition, new doubleglazed sashes can be fitted to the existing frames making a considerable saving. New windows can transform the look of the property inside and out and the cost is an investment in the property, which can be reflected in its price and saleability. Many of our homes are covered by conservation orders or are listed, and period features like windows have to be as original – and that means timber. If the windows are old and rotten it makes more sense and is cost-effective to replace them. If you are drawn to the qualities of PVCu or aluminium, which require very low maintenance, you could replace your old windows, again an investment in your home that makes your property more desirable to a new owner. Gardens to inspire

ADAM S BAILEY

AS WE ENDEAVOUR TO THROW OFF THE SHACKLES OF WINTER and look forward to some much needed spring sunshine, now is the time to start planning for the long, lazy summer days spent enjoying your garden. At Landscape One Design we are providing our clients with the gardens that they want to spend time in. We offer services to help invigorate a tired-looking garden right through to a full design and construction. From planting schemes, decks and water features to complete makeovers, we can offer the solutions to make an outdoor space your dream garden. Contact us at: gardens@landscapeone.co.uk 0800 848 8053 www.landscapeone.co.uk

It’s your space, make it unique GARDENING IS A FORM OF ESCAPISM, a way of switching off from the technological demands of modern life. While there may be hundreds of apps offering gardening advice, design tips and the best plants for tricky places, nothing beats the real feeling of getting outside and leaving the gadgets indoors. Growing something isn’t just a way of making fresh food for the kitchen or helping local wildlife find food after an incredibly wet winter, it’s also food for the soul, a way of reconnecting with the very things which give us the air we breathe – plants.

LANDSCAPE ONE

Spring of course is an explosion in itself, when plants shrug off winter and burst into life with a riot of colour and fragrance. Now’s the time to get ‘hands on’. You don’t have to be a plantoholic to brighten up the dullest of shady spots or make the most out of a tiny space specially reserved for those quiet moments we all need. The best designs, like the paperclip, are the ones, which are the simplest. Sandstone can give a modern edge to a patio or seating area while traditional Yorkstone will provide a timeless quality to period properties, but there are so many materials to choose from you really can make a personal statement that reflects the living space indoors. When choosing plants, be adventurous but take advice on how fast they grow, particularly if you don’t have much room. If you want privacy, before reaching for the hammer or trowel, consider going green and think of hedging first. Not just a cheaper option but the local wildlife will love you for it. Lighting is something some people shy away from under the false impression that it’s not beneficial to the environment but what is more ecologically friendly, being outdoors with a few low wattage LED lights on enjoying the garden, or being indoors watching a huge TV screen? Modern lighting has increased longevity, too, ensuring your investment lasts for years to come. There are few things more satisfying than looking back on your endeavours, knowing you helped the local wildlife and increased the value of your property at the same time. Time for a spring refresh What are the latest trends for the home?

DESIGN SERVICES

EMILE AZAN OF CHAMELEON DESIGNS discusses colour trends… One of the big trends for interior colour schemes is Cosmetic shades - such as peachy and blush tones. They have a very soft aesthetic that’s warm, calming, reassuring and relaxing, and are now a great way to move beyond standard and slightly pedestrian creams and beiges. If you are feeling more

daring, then go for something a bit brighter, such as apricot or an uplifting coral. In this palette you can also include soft greys and lilacs. At the other end of the spectrum, one of the key colours for spring has been Gucci purple, which is now filtering through to bathroom design. Rich, jewel-like and velvety colours like this help to create a luxurious and cocooning feel. A mistake people make, particularly if they have a smaller bathroom, is to think that they have to paint it white in order to make it feel bigger, when actually this will probably make the space feel cold. What is more important than size is that the room feels like a wonderful place to spend time and relax in, so although a dark colour won’t increase the feeling of space it can make it look extremely sumptuous. Another rule made to be broken is the idea that a bathroom should be blue. We often turn to blues as an easy option and because of its water connotations. If you really want to use the colour blue, make a statement with a Sapphire blue or Turquoise.

S

pring is a time of renewal, after a winter of hibernation it seems nature comes back to life – and with it comes an abundance of energy and colour! Green is tipped to be a hot colour in the home this spring and no wonder, it is synonymous with this season of new beginnings - the grass becomes greener and the trees start to bud again. If you want to play safe just introduce the colour into the soft furnishing in the room like these chairs from Sofa Design.

BICKLEY PARK SCHOOL

Education

Making the Right Choice ONE OF OUR MAIN AIMS AT BICKLEY PARK is to produce well-rounded pupils who are equipped for the challenges that they will undoubtedly face at senior school. In many schools throughout the country pupils make the transition from primary to secondary schools when they are 11. However, prep school parents are fortunate to have a choice about whether they want their child to go on to senior school at 11 or to stay on until 13. At Bickley Park we can’t give you a simple answer to the question of what the right age for a child to join senior school is. However, it is well known that adolescent growth in boys tends to come later than in girls and by the age of 13 they are better equipped physically and socially to deal with the challenges of a senior school. This greater confidence makes them more able to network and communicate as individuals. In addition, the challenging Common Entrance curriculum that we offer provides outstanding preparation for GCSE and further study. Indeed, many of our Year 8 boys find themselves with a real academic advantage over their counterparts at senior school. If you think our outstanding preparation for senior school may be just right for your son then come along and visit us. Call 020 8460 9800 to make an appointment. You may also want to consider sitting your son for our Year 7 Scholarship tests on Thursday 14 March. Bickley Park School, 14/24 Page Heath Lane, Bickley, Bromley BR1 2DS.

STUDENTS FROM BETHANY SCHOOL took to the stage for three sell-out performances of the School’s musical production “We Will Rock You”, which features songs from the band Queen. The 70 strong cast from Year 7 through to 13, performed at School in the Assembly Hall, which had seen a complete transformation into a rock venue. Sarah Boyle, Bethany’s Head of Drama said, “I am immensely proud of our talented cast. They successfully juggled their schoolwork with lengthy rehearsals many of which have been over weekends. Well done to one and all.” Bethany School. Curtisden Green, Goudhurst, Cranbrook, Kent TN17 1LB Tel: 01580 211273.

Ships of Stone: The Islands of Mervyn Peake

S

hips of Stone: The Islands of Mervyn Peake takes a new look at the work of the visionary artist, writer and illustrator by focusing on one of Peake’s lifelong obsessions: islands. This exhibition shows the landscapes and characters of the island emerging in his illustrations for Treasure Island (1949), his novel Mr Pye (1953) and in his descriptions of the metaphorical island of Gormenghast Castle. The exhibition uses audio recordings to bring Peake’s writings alive alongside objects and artworks that span his career, many of which are on public display for the first time. Mervyn Peake was born to Missionary parents in China and grew up there until the age of 11. In 1923 he started school at Eltham College, formerly the School for the Sons of Missionaries. By this point, he had learned Treasure Island, his favourite book, by heart and early stories, paintings and drawings reveal a thirst for adventure and a fascination with islands. The exhibition reveals and explores this ongoing fascination with islands that started in Eltham College and remained with him throughout his career. 23 March - 18 May 2013 Saturdays 12-4pm FREE ENTRY Gerald Moore Gallery at Eltham College, Mottingham Lane, London SE9 4RW Tel: 020 8857 0448, E: info@geraldmooregallery.org W: www.geraldmooregallery.org, T: @GeraldMooreGall The exhibition features many works which are on public display for the first time and is made possible thanks to major loans from The Estate of Mervyn Peake, The National Portrait Gallery and other public collections in the UK. Restaurant Reviews

LOCALE

SITUATED A SHORT STROLL FROM THE RAILWAY STATION, STATION Locale specialises in classic Italian flavours using fine Italian produce. Enticed by the promise of divas and divine Italian cuisine we ascended the sweeping stairwell to the main dining room of Locale in Blackheath. Downstairs there is a large function room to cater for weddings and other private hire celebrations. The palazzo-like dining room is decorated with candelabras and gilded mirrors and has a cocktail bar to the side, an open kitchen galley area opposite and a feeling of grandeur enhanced tonight by the Yamaha baby grand piano. Greeted by the maitre d’ we are shown to our table and appreciatively sip our complimentary aperitif of prosecco (*) and mull over the varied menu. Meanwhile the group of young opera singers begin their repertoire, accompanied by two pianists; the high ceiling enhancing the acoustic and letting their talents fill the room without overpowering the diners. We began our meal with deliciously prepared ravioli parcels the pasta light and perfectly cooked in a classic rich sauce of butter and sage. My partner delved for pan fried scallops wrapped in pancetta on a bed of pureed peas flavoured with a hint of garlic and mint – the cooking again delicious and precise.

Choices for main meals encompass pasta, meat and fish dishes but the speciality of the house catches our eyes – “da dividere” a platter for 2 to share of a rack of Gloucester old spot pork with trimmings – too good to resist. Four thickly cut chops accompanied by dark roasted figs, and a creamed horse radish sauce. The pork itself was surrounded by a crisp, golden girdle of fat: the meat succulent, the flavour deep and rich. The side dishes complemented perfectly, rosemary roast potatoes, buttered marrow and crunchy, fresh beans. The cooking truly served the excellence of the ingredients. We shared a bottle of the light, honeyed Malvasia Salento wine from the south east coast of Italy. The room soon filled with the hum of diners’ conversations interspersed with well known arias and duets of Puccini, Mozart and Verdi. The waiters flitting busily between the tables, we settled easily into the atmosphere. After a suitable pause we passed on the array of sweet desserts favouring instead to share a cheese board. The kitchen again surprised with the excellent pecorino sheep’s cheese, the fruit bread and pot of honey washed down with a glass of ruby port. The meal and the music were well matched and delivered with flavour and flourish. The bill for two was £95 with service. More opera nights are planned once a month throughout 2013 – we recommend you reserve your seats up in the Locale stalls. *Free glass of prosecco when booking a table at an Opera Night. HAVING GROWN UP EATING AT MANY RESTAURANTS around London, as my family are in the restaurant business, eating at Panas Gurkha that specializes in Indian and Nepalese cuisine on Lee High Road, made a very pleasant change to traditional curry restaurants. It was a chilly Friday evening when a friend and I were shown to our table that had a ‘reserved’ place card on it. The restaurant is very intimate with 45 covers and steadily filled up whilst we were there. It had a romantic feel, with the soft buzz of conversation and a candle on our table. The ordering was, not surprisingly, left up to me and I played it relatively safe by ordering the recommended dishes on the menu along with Cobra beer. The starters that arrived, after obligatory papadums, were Momo, lamb dumplings, a very popular dish in Nepal and Sadeko Kukhura, shredded chicken that was served on a bed of salad, a signature dish. The first course was a great start to the meal and left both of our mouths watering at the prospect of the main dishes being of a similar standard.

The main courses that I chose did not disappoint. They were two chef’s specials, Choyola Chicken and Jhaneko Masu (lamb), accompanied with rice and naan. The dishes were dry, meaning they did not have a curry sauce and were presented in a spectacularly simple way. A curry sauce was not necessary as both were delicately spiced and very tender. It was a refreshing change to a normal curry. All the dishes are part of the Panas award winning healthy eating menu, which revolves around using minimal oil and ghee in the cooking.

Why the best things in life only get better? CHAPTERS ALL DAY DINING

By Sudi Piggot

H

ands up, who has a favourite winter jumper to cosy up in? A book they read again and again? A dish they never tire of eating… And a restaurant they always want to return to, knowing they'll get a warm welcome, a menu they read with hungry and pleasurable anticipation whilst being reassured that a good few, much loved dishes are never off the menu. Odds are that Chapters regulars (and there are many, even weekday lunches buzz with animated chatter) will recognise this sums up their local all-day-dining brasserie with a splash of affordable luxe admirably. And, the extra good news is Chapters just keeps on evolving and getting better. It's a very different proposition to the predictability of neighbouring chain restaurants that frankly simply don't offer the same winning equation of creativity, superior quality, seasonality and individuality. Proud recipient of the only Michelin Bib Gourmand in South East London, Chapters Head Chef Alex Tyndall has an impressive CV. He has previously worked at the 4-star

Queens Hotel in Leeds and was head hunted by Master of Wine John Hoskins for his Huntingdon based restaurant. His association with Chapters Executive Chef Andrew McLeish goes back to 2004, where he worked at Michelin starred Chapter One for 6 years before taking the helm at Chapters. Tyndall believes the perfect local restaurant should always be gently evolving, so that there's always something extra and different to tempt. Right now he's seasonally mad on game, lightly spiced haunch of venison with sautéed potatoes, bok choi and mulled fruit compote and slow roast pork belly served with colcannon, caramelised apple and cider velouté. And there are some incredibly enticing new cocktails ahead of the curve in recognising that cocktails with dinner are very definitely hip. Try “Moulin Rouge” with vodka, passion fruit, fresh strawberries and raspberries, topped up with sparkling wine. Yet the recognisably familiar, delicious favourites remain too, such as Chapters fish and chips and Josper hamburger that will never be off the menu. Why not? Come and try them to find out why they're irreplaceable. Talking Jospers, and a lot of people do, as Chapters have Blackheath's only Josper Grill, they're a cult gleaming beast of a charcoal oven with incredible heat and impart incredible, subtle smoky flavour. Jospers are considered a must by all the best Mayfair steak restaurants who charge a great deal more than Chapters for steaks of the highest order. What's more, Chapters offer a steak to suit every connoisseur. A choice of ultra-supreme British grass-fed Herefordshire rib of beef or premium USDA grain-fed beef from Great Omaha. Yet, the Josper is not only about steak. It's used for best-selling starter Josper grilled quail with choucroute, cashew nuts, carrot and vanilla puree. And children really do appreciate their Josper-grilled chicken and chips served with de rigour fresh, seasonal vegetables for under a fiver too. There's an astonishingly reasonable menu du jour (3 courses for £14.95 at lunch, £17.95 at dinner) with three enticing choices at each course. Smoked haddock risotto with crème fraiche followed by whole plaice with lemon, almond and parsley sauce, sautéed potatoes and green beans and poached plums with honey ice-cream on the blackboard went down a treat earlier this week.

“It's all about consistently demanding the finest ingredients and just letting their flavour shine through,”

...explains Tyndall, sneaking out of his busy kitchen to cast a watchful eye over a buzzing midweek lunch, that is seamlessly seguing into the afternoon with many a cheeky glass of champagne being ordered. Sartorially speaking, Chapters is a crowd puller/pleaser too. A relaxed yet sophisticated mix of bare brick, wooden floors, caramel coloured leather banquettes and lovely natural light from its huge windows overlooking the heath. Service too deserves special mention. It's well-informed, helpful and professional yet friendly, and thrives on creating the special buzz among customers – young, old, couples, families and friends having a good time, whatever the occasion. Chapters is quite simply the culinary equivalent of a literary best-seller that will never go out of print. New wine trends

F

ood and wine matching has become a hot topic in recent years, and ‘Tasting Menus’, with wine pairings in leading restaurants have become a gastronomic high in eating out. For some, this kind of experience is sheer decadence, and as we continue to live in economically more difficult times, ethical issues, rising alcohol taxes, and changing weather patterns, will lead to a change in what we will be buying, both food and wine. The saying of ‘Eat and Drink less, but better’ will become more important than ever. The important message that food and wine pairing sends is that wine is not for glugging down like beer, but is to be enjoyed with food. Too many of the high street wines are sold with lots of alcohol and residual sugar that make them so easy to swig down on their own. Wines with acidity and tannins are not appealing on their own, and people are put off by them, but with food they come alive. These wines though are much better for you, as they are better balanced with lower alcohol levels. Alcohol does not give flavour to wine just texture. Winemakers are now consciously trying to find vineyards, and grow vines sustainably and organically to produce grapes that do not have excessive levels of sugar, that create alcoholic fruit bomb styles of wines. Australian Chardonnay may have led the revolution for the easy style of drinking wines over here, but a series of tastings I have been to recently have presented a ‘new’ style of leaner, fresher and vibrant Chardonnay, which illustrates these new trends. The accepted consumer image of Australian Chardonnay, which is full of tropical fruit and oak, is dying at the level around £8.00 a bottle upwards. Having been guilty of joining the ABC (Anything But [Aussie] Chardonnay) brigade, because of the overdose of industrial style examples that dominate the high street, I have to admit to have fallen in love with Aussie Chardonnay all over again. This is because these leaner Chardonnays are full of fruit, supported by some subtle oak, if any at all, and have good acidity. Importantly they are much more suited with food, and when Chardonnay is like this then it is a safe bet for food and wine matching as it can compliment so many foodie flavours with ease. Top Australian exponents are ‘Ten Minutes by Tractor’ from Mornington Peninsular south of Melbourne available from wine merchants www.bancroftwines.com, or the single vineyard wines of ‘Giant Steps’ available at www.owleb.com. Made at the ‘Innocent Bystander’ winery in the Yarra Valley, their more affordable wines are available at Waitrose, under the name of Willing Participant Chardonnay 2010 at £11.99. This along with ‘McWilliam’s’ Isabelle Chardonnay 2011 from the cool climate zone of Tumbarumba £10.49 (Waitrose) and ‘Wakefield Estate’ 2011 Clare Valley Chardonnay £10.99 (Majestic) all demonstrate this move to a fresher, purer, and gentle stone fruit character of Chardonnay, that is so delightful and explains why Chardonnay is such an exciting and elegant grape. JAMES HADDRELL

» Art, Drama, Music, Language & Wine

Exciting Horizons Claire Allen talks to Greenwich Theatre's artistic director James Haddrell When you took over as artistic director five years ago; what was your original vision? There wasn’t one single vision - which was challenging. I wanted to bring more children’s theatre to Greenwich and to commission more approachable theatre for families, which wasn’t just the Christmas panto. I also wanted to acknowledge the change in demographic in the community by creating a programme which didn’t just rely on adaptations of classic dramas and texts, but instead appealed to people of different ages, ethnicities, professional backgrounds and financial positions. So we reduced ticket prices, made the theatre more comfortable and began working with new and emerging theatre companies. What makes Greenwich Theatre so exciting right now? Every year we take on young theatre companies, and have a reputation for attracting them and helping them along their way. For Greenwich Theatre audiences this means seeing interesting and high quality productions, which end up in the West End and cities like New York, Dublin and Madrid, before anyone else. We’ve now reached a point where there is a great variety on show, and something different to see each week. Helen Mirren, Ali Smith and director Lucy Bailey have all recently been made patrons of Greenwich Theatre, but what are your personal highlights? There was a point last year, when I was number crunching, and realised the symmetry in our audience numbers having doubled though our funding had halved. Having achieved that in five years felt like a very pure outcome. At the same time we do owe a huge thanks to Royal Greenwich - it is our additional funding which has reduced so drastically, not that from the local authority. While the arts across the country struggle with reducing resources, with some county councils cutting arts funding altogether, Royal Greenwich has bucked a national trend in maintaining our funding despite major reductions from other sources. Hopefully our increased audience figures prove them right in having such faith in what we do. What can audiences expect from Greenwich Theatre in 2013? Our annual Greenwich Theatre’s Children’s Festival returns this Easter, and having scooped two Broadway World awards for Rent last year, look out for news of another big musical heading for Greenwich this autumn. We have a huge range of shows coming up, so come and see a production you’re sure you’ll like, then come back and take a risk and see something completely different. Trust us.
