HEAP’S COMPETITION WINNERS
The winners of the recent Heap’s sausages competition enjoyed their evening workshop making sausages with host, Martin Heap. Due to the success of the evening its been decided to run the workshop on the last Friday of the month (in Sept, Oct and Nov). The restored Cutty Sark has won a Royal Institute of British Architects Regional Award for 2013. The RIBA Awards programme celebrates the best of British architecture and this year 57 buildings across London were shortlisted for a 2013 RIBA London Award. Circle Line Challenge
Wifi for Canary Wharf
Members of the Rotary Club of Woolwich recently raised over £3000 by a sponsored Circle Line Challenge dressed as various Superheroes and Villains. The funds raised will be split equally between Guy’s Hospital and the Charlton Riding for the Disabled Association.

rom sunbathing, refreshing walks, to family picnics, there's always a good reason to visit one of our local parks. Valerie Breese finds out what’s not to be missed in our parks this summer. Parksfest, part of The Royal Greenwich Festivals, is a programme of free summer events across local parks in Royal Greenwich during June and July. The annual festival of outdoor performing arts includes theatre, dance and street arts in most of the parks. For July there are events in Eaglesfield Park – 13 Jul, Eltham Park South - 7 & 21, Fairy Hill Park – 6 Jul, Well Hall Pleasaunce - 14, 28 Jul, and Winn’s Common – 21 Jul. For more information visit www.parkfest.org/venues Greenwich Park is the oldest of the Royal Parks and offers spectacular views over the river Thames. It's the perfect place to take a break between visiting Greenwich's other attractions, and boasts three cafes, a children's playground, and a bandstand with Sunday concerts throughout July from 2pm. If you're lucky, you might spot the small herd of fallow and red deer that live in the park or visit the ‘Drop In’ at the wildlife centre near the south end of the lake on 27 July between 1-3pm and find out more about the deer and other wildlife in the park. Across the Thames in Bow, Victoria Park known locally as ‘Vicky Park’, was London's first public park. As well as canals, ponds and a pavilion, it also has tennis courts, a sports ground and an outdoor theatre. Some of London's biggest events are held at the park, including the annual Lovebox Weekender on 19 – 21 July. One of London's best-loved summer festivals, and this year's line-up includes Goldfrapp, Plan B, Annie Mac, Hurts and Azealia Banks. With plenty more acts across multiple stages, plus theatrical and art installations. Lee Valley Regional Park stretches 26 miles (42 km) along the River Lee, from East India Docks, past the Olympic Park and up to Ware in Hertfordshire. This huge park offers green spaces, nature reserves and ample opportunity for sports, such as the Lee Valley White Water Centre built as

Save Your Energy Within five years landlords of less energy-efficient commercial property may not be able to let it unless they make improvements... ...says Ray Crudgington, Managing Partner at Greenwich & Blackheath solicitors Grant Saw. You would think that, with all the vacant shops and offices at present, the Government would be focused on ensuring that they can all be let but other, greener, concerns are also in play.
If you have bought or sold property recently you will know that in almost all cases you need to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) which tells you on a brightly coloured chart how energy-efficient your property is. Under Section 49 of the Energy Act 2011 plans are afoot to force landlords of poorly-rated properties either to bring them up to standard or to have the maximum package available funded under the “green deal” (which means extra costs on utility bills for those occupying the building for years to come). Landlords who fail to comply will be breaking the law if they let their property after (probably) 2018. This could be a potentially significant state intervention into the private commercial lettings market and a boon to suppliers of energyefficient heating systems and double-glazing salesmen everywhere. Would the Government dare to do something similar for residential property? There is no evidence of this yet but if they chose to do so, owners of buy to let property had better beware.

Summer of Sport The summer of 2013 is going to be packed with exciting sporting events around the whole of the country.

Canary Wharf is not going to miss out on this, with several sporting events showing on the big screens appearing for the summer in Canada Square park.
T
he screens will be showing a range of sports, beginning with live coverage of the tennis from Wimbledon until its conclusion on the 7 July. There will also be complete coverage of the British golf open championship from Muirfield, Scotland for the entire four days, 18-21 July. As well as these events, there will be highlights from the Scottish Golf Open between11-14 July, and of the Prudential Ride London 3-4 August amongst other sporting occasions (www.canarywharf.com). This will be a great way to spend some time in the sun with friends or family, throughout the summer! Having seen thousands of runners already, as it was the location of miles 18 and 19 of the London Marathon, Canary Wharf is not just showing events on the big screen, it is also hosting several other events. The first of these was the Pearl Izumi Tour Series; a world-class cycling event held in June, which not only featured the ten best professional UK cycling teams but also an amateur section. For the first time ever, Canary Wharf will also be hosting a beach volleyball competition to raise money for Action for Kids, a charity that supports young people with physical and learning disabilities and their parents and carers. This takes place between the 8-19 July and is open to anyone wishing to enter a team or to just have some fun at the beach that has been specially created,
at Wood Wharf. Each team that enters will receive two hours of coaching from a qualified Volleyball England coach. There will also be Paralympics-style sitting volleyball tournaments running concurrently. Finally, the table-tennis competition, Ping! will be returning and again it will be open to all abilities and all ages on 2-10 August. This will be an all weather event in the Canary Wharf’s Jubilee Mall Place. Ping! Will also feature professional coaches on hand to iron any kinks out in your backhand and there will also be sporting legends competing, in showcase matches, against each other. Not to be outdone by Canary Wharf, the £429 million Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford is hosting the London Grand Prix for the first time. This is part of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) diamond league athletics events and was previously held in the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. It is set to be held on the weekend of the anniversary of the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony on 26-28 July. Tickets were sold out in the first two days, the Friday and the Saturday, of this event in less than two hours after they went on sale. This is very unsurprising, given that the likes of Mo Farah, Usain Bolt and Jessica Ennis are all hoping to compete. The Sunday will feature at least fourteen medalists from the 2012 Paralympics, including four gold medalists. Although there will not be any amateur participation, like the events at Canary Wharf, all these events will be highly anticipated. By Kabir Dev

We all love the healthy glow from our summer holiday tan, but living in the rainy British climate means that tans can start to fade from the moment we step off the plane. However, a little preparation and care can help to prolong a tan, without having to fake it. Firstly, it’s important to exfoliate. This should be done before your holiday to ensure that skin is hydrated and prepped. Dry skin can lead to peeling, and in some cases an uneven tan, so slough away dead skin cells with a gentle exfoliator. Wearing sunscreen is vital when exposed to the sun, not only to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, but also if you want a long-lasting tan. Not only is it dangerous to avoid wearing sunscreen due to skin cancer risks, but burning your skin can lead to premature ageing and red, peeling skin, rather than a sexy golden glow. Moisturising is key to a healthy and long-lasting tan, to ensure skin is hydrated and smooth. The face is the first area where tans usually fade, so remember to use a good quality face moisturiser as well as a body lotion. Avoid waxing if you want your tan to last, as it will remove surface skin cells, therefore stripping away the top layer of your tan. Your skincare routine should continue after your holiday – make sure you moisturise on a daily basis to keep skin hydrated

So summer has finally arrived – and with it the shock of exposing those pasty white and, dare we say it, hairy legs again! Education update Two teams from Blackheath High School have secured places in the 2012/13 Jaguar Maths in Motion™ Challenge National Final, beating off stiff competition from schools across the country. They are one of only two schools to be represented in two different age groups and, this year, are two of only three allgirl teams in the Final. For the 2013 National Final, teams will have just ninety minutes to prepare their cars. The competing teams are categorised into three age ranges - Primary, Secondary aged 11 to 13 and 14 to 16 - with the winners from each age group fighting it out for title of ‘Overall National Champions’. Head of Blackheath High Junior School, Sarah Skevington, is delighted that the girls have made the final, commenting, “It is a joy to see the girls so inspired and excited by the Maths in Motion Maths™ Challenge. It is exactly this type of innovative and creative activity which promote Maths and Science and contributes to the enthusiasm our girls have for these subjects and the success they enjoy in them.”

Art and Science Week at Sydenham High Junior School GDST had pupils flying high and reaching for the stars with a range of a lessons, projects and experiences on the theme of Up! A highlight of the week was an opportunity for the girls to see and hear about some of nature’s most magnificent flying machines with a visit from Eagle Heights and his birds of prey, including a bald eagle and an owl. After the presentation some of the girls were brave enough to have their pictures taken with the birds. The finale to activities was an opportunity to explore the solar system and take a virtual journey to the moon inside a mobile planetarium, specially brought into school by Guiseppe Nicolosi of Science Dome. ‘MATHS IN MOTION’ NATIONAL FINAL
BROMLEY HIGH CELEBRATES 130TH BIRTHDAY WITH THEIR COMMUNITY We are delighted to be celebrating our 130th birthday this year and in June we held a Community Festival. Past and present Bromley High School pupils, parents, relatives, friends, governors, together with visitors from other local schools, members from our local elderly, business and community services, all mingled together on this happy occasion. In the morning, the Junior School sang to our elderly guests as they enjoyed tea and conversation with the senior school girls. From the stage, various performances entertained the festival guests throughout the day, including a cheer leading demonstration, a gymnastic display and a fabulous range of instrumental and vocal performances from the Junior and Senior School musicians. There were many exciting activities taking place across the day, many of which raised monies for the school’s chosen charity, Marjorie McClure School. Staff and Year 9 girls organised a Sports Day for Year 5 pupils from Bromley High and other local primary schools; fun face painting and potato printing; an Eco Swap shop; fairground games, Tai Chi and Circus Skills workshops and an extremely popular ‘Sponge the Teacher‘ stall. Other highlights of the day included a Climbing Wall, a mobile farm and a farmers’ market, selling local produce and gifts. The Fire Brigade brought their fire engine with them and the younger visitors had a brilliant time sitting in the front seat and learnt about the job of the fireman and women. Community Police Constables attended too and the children had fun trying on police equipment and learning about the work that they do. “What a fabulous event! It was wonderful to be able to welcome primary school children from Bickley, Bromley, Raglan Primary, and St Mark’s Church of England schools to Bromley High for our 130th Anniversary Festival. t Bromley Schools’ Collegiate we offer teacher training routes for Infant, Primary and Secondary teaching in local schools in the Bromley area. We are currently looking to recruit for our next cohort of trainees for September 2014. We are an established provider with 20 years’ experience in Initial Teacher Training. We offer practical training in outstanding schools, with experienced practitioners to mentor you through the course. Our schools offer excellent opportunities for future employment, with over 60% of trainees appointed to their first teaching post in a partnership school. Trainees are based in two schools within the consortium, observing lessons and gradually building up to planning and teaching lessons themselves. Trainees attend weekly Professional Studies sessions to support their work towards academic assignments and to consider the practical application of theory to teaching and learning. The Training Programme is personalised to meet individual needs and all trainees are fully supported by both the central office and the placement schools.
Trainees are required to build an E-portfolio, which records their professional and subject knowledge development in order to demonstrate that all standards required for Qualified Teacher Status have been met. The Importance of staying in Education post 16 It is no longer a sensible option for a young person to leave education for good at 16 in order to seek work. The great majority of young people already do stay on beyond 16 and there is a risk that it will only be the more vulnerable and lowerachieving who drop out at 16. Yet
they are precisely the group who have the greatest need to stay on – so that they can achieve useful skills which will prepare them for life. There are very significant benefits to young people from staying in education or training until at least the age of 18. They are much more likely to improve their qualifications and skills. This will be valuable to them financially because they will be more likely to be employed and to get jobs paying higher salaries. For example, on average a young person getting five or more good GCSEs earns more than £100,000 more over their lifetime than one who leaves learning with qualifications below level 2. There are also much broader benefits: they are more likely to be healthy and to have good social skills.

< PLAYTIME Time-poor, self-doubting, technology obsessed London parents are in danger of developing play amnesia, as they spend less than an hour a day playing with their children. Young children and toddlers are losing out as the average busy parent spends just 55 minutes a day playing one-to one-with their child. Even parents of children as young as 0 – 2 years of age play for an average of only 62 minutes. Research of 3,000 parents found that 32% of mums and dads polled in the region spend just 30 minutes or less on quality playtime. Instead many parents rely on high-tech toys to keep their kids amused with well over a quarter admitting they put on a DVD instead of playing with their children. Almost 1 in 5 put them in front of the games console and 19% give them a smart phone or tablet to play with. Parenting expert Dr Miriam Stoppard, spokesperson for Galt Toys, which conducted the research, said: “These findings are incredibly sad. A parent is a child’s first teacher and playing

Lively Whisky Bar and more Kabir Dev dines and reports back... ‘Fine dining’, in my opinion, is a term that is given to restaurants far too easily. However, Boisdale in Canary Wharf is definitely a restaurant that fits in to anyone’s category of ‘fine dining’. The evening started in a somewhat surreal fashion as to get to Boisdale in Canary Wharf, you have to enter into a specific set of lifts to take you to the restaurant, as there is not an entrance on the ground floor. However, surreal soon transformed into sublime as we were shown to the bar for a pre-dinner cocktail. I chose a Perfect Lady and my companion chose a Tommy’s Margarita, these are both elegant twists on classic cocktails. Once we had received our drinks, the head barman, Ernest Reid, who combined passion and knowledge when describing the drinks, gave us a tour of the bar. This was a tour of the most comprehensive and interesting whisky collection, on the numerous shelves of the bar, I have ever seen. After this, we were shown to our table, which was in the window, overlooking Cabot Square fountain and part of the Motorexpo (a feature in last month’s Meridian). To start with, we had foie gras and the retro classic, Prawn Cocktail, which was even served in a tall glass. We were recommended wines to pair with our food and the starters were delicately paired with a white wine, Sancerre Cuvee Caillottes 2010. It was incredibly well balanced and refreshing and was also extremely complimentary to the first course. The main courses arrival coincided with the first song of Lizzie Deane, the resident soul singer. Her music provided the perfect atmosphere for our steaks, fillet and sirloin. Boisdale pride themselves on their steaks being sourced from only Aberdeenshire. These Scottish steaks are traditionally and naturally reared and this is really shown in the taste. The steaks are both tender and packed with flavour, a joy to eat. They were accompanied with chips of course but also, spinach that was creamed with black truffles, which was simply to die for! The wine, which had been paired to the steaks, was Vacqueyras Grenat Noble 2006, a red that is rich enough to stand up to the steaks and still be delicious. To wash down our dinner, which had been spectacular, we had a whisky each, personally recommended by Ernest according to our preferences, who by this time, seemed like a personal friend. meal at Carola, and not just because of their genuine Italian warmth which welcomes you before you even arrive. If like me, you were lucky enough to dine at a little, well-known Pizzeria in the Elephant and Castle throughout the 90s and until mid noughties, I’ll let you into a secret....we’ve found Pizzeria Castello’s head chef! With good memories to live up too, the stakes really were high. Being a sunny mid-week evening, we head out back to the breezy garden area. Our waiter tempts me with a refreshing sounding parma ham and fig salad from the special menu. Lavished with fresh figs and salty sweet parma ham, accompanied with a torn basil, mint and rocket salad, it resulted in a fresh and summery starter, which was surprisingly aromatic and both complex and rewarding. A requested tricolore salad was rustled up with no fuss and was devoured with equal delight. We were off to a good start. While we waited for our mains, our waiter engaged and entertained us with easy conversation making us feel as if we’d eaten here many times before. Curious to find out if our memories had served us right, my partner ordered the Siciliana pizza. While I wait for his reaction I tuck into my Agnollo alla Mostarda: a generous rack of soft, flavoursome lamb – laced with a gentle bite from the mustard and served with fresh seasonal vegetables and the most skilfully sautéed potatoes I’ve tasted. I spot the look of approval on my partners face and try a slice of the sciliana for myself. Let me tell you - we have searched for pizza that tastes this good for years, coming close once in Edinburgh, but this wins hands down. It’s light, with a golden crisp to the edge and perfectly doughy at
THE PEARSON ROOM - Canary Wharf must have been designed to be seen on sunlit evenings. The Pearson Room’s panoramic windows look out onto Canada Square with Canada Tower backlit in the evening light. The restaurants’ interior has a comfortable 1950’s feel to it. We sat at the large zinc bar with dry Martinis, neat gin with a measure (or less) of Martini Extra Dry, with green olives served ice cold, stirred, not shaken, of course. From the wide ranging eclectic menu we chose a platter of Antipasti to share. With Prosciutto di Parma, Salami di Milano, Bresaola (made from cured beef fillet), Speck and Ventricina, a large salami strong in paprika from Teramo, not unlike chorizo, but bigger.
Following a full refurbishment, Apple n Orange greengrocers is now under new management, but you’ll still find the same familiar faces on hand with their expert advice. New opening times, Monday to Saturday 8am – 7.30pm, mean you can pop in after work as well as weekends, and they now offer a self-service option or the staff will be happy to serve you as before. Alongside their high quality seasonal fruit and vegetables, they have introduced items like: extra virgin oil, balsamic vinegar, plus a variety of olives, peppers, and nuts. the centre, its boldly flavoured and tastes even better than we remembered. If you can’t resist, the desert menu offers all the classic Italian favourites, and is washed down with a chilled complimentary homemade limoncello. A perfect finish. At Carola you’ll find a real mix of diners: faithful customers engaging in playful banter with the staff, groups of families celebrating, cosy couples and new customers soaking up the wonderful atmosphere and wondering how they haven’t eaten here before now. With it, excellent breads with olive oil and sweet, thick Balsamic vinegar (made from cooked Trebbiano grape juice and not a vinegar in the usual sense). Pickled vegetables; tiny cornichons, celeriac and artichoke were also included. This with a glass of a sexy Pinot Noir. Next to this, our salad with creamy-soft Buffalo Mozzarella featured several different kinds of tomato, roast red pepper and butternut squash with fine croutons to take the oil. Very high quality ingredients, served at the height of good condition by very competent, knowledgeable and affable people who know how to present their food. I chose a ribeye steak, the centre and best portion of the rib steak without the bone. One of the most flavourful cuts of beef, it’s soft, as it doesn’t have to work hard, and especially tender if taken very rare. Thick cream dressed the upper surface and melted into the meat juices, which coated the fantastic Cassava chips (new to me, this South American root vegetable makes an interesting change). The best waiter in the world insisted his mother would not be happy without mange tout and Kenya beans in butter to give us rich iron (my guard was down). My partner had Romney Marsh Lamb with a host of seasonal vegetables, and set about it with vigour. Mendoza Malbec 2007 from Brazil was lovely with an engaging aromatic headiness. It came from a separate list which features several expensive (but good value) world wines and French First Growths including a Margaux but featuring Chateau Haut-Brion, an exceptional Pauillac. My cheeseboard, huge and ranging near finished me. Gorgonzola Dolce (sweet), from Piedmont, is neither cooked nor pressed which results in a higher moisture cheese, which allows a more open texture and its unctuous blue-green veining. Pecorino Sardo with black truffles, and Ubriaco from the Veneto, bathed in sparkling Prosecco to extract the complex flavours. Red and green grapes, biscuits and bread, with a slightly spritzig Moscato from Piemonte, too good. This year we’re cold-shouldering the early-morning airport dash and leaving the passports unearthed somewhere we’d have to destroy the house to locate, in exchange for a calmer but equally as spectacular - staycation. This summer, being bored is banned. With a plethora of venues, activities and events to choose from in south east London and Kent we couldn’t list them all, but here is Meridian’s bitesize guide to get you started: GO LOCAL: The first rule of a good staycation is to keep it local - saving travel time and expenses. So when the weather is good and there are staycation gems on your doorstep, why not walk, cycle or scoot there? Open to the public since 1820, Firepower, the Royal Artillery Museum, in Woolwich offers a fascinating day out, revealing 700 years of world Artillery that kids and adults alike adore; and throughout August it will be a hive for summer holiday activities. For those with a penchant for furry friends, how about farming in the city? Surrey Docks City Farm boasts 2.2 acres of farm land just by the south bank of the Thames in Rotherhithe. They say animals are great stress relievers and here you’ll find pigs, cows, sheep, donkeys, ponies, rabbits, bees and much more. And for the indoorsy types, what beats scrambling about 22 miles of mystery at Chislehurst Caves? Enjoy a lamp-lit tour while you learn about the caves integral role in housing thousands of locals during WWII and its spooky Druid, Roman and Saxon past.
BE A TOURIST: Millions travel from all corners of the world to visit our beautiful city each year, but so many of us bypass these attractions without a second glance. Don your rain poncho, wear your camera around your neck and relax into tourist mode. If museums are your thing, you’ll be pleased to hear that the much-loved Imperial War Museum will partially reopen at the end of the month, following a refurbishment. While at The London Transport Museum they are celebrating 150 years of the London Underground with an exhibition showcasing the pioneering poster art that has brightened many a dull journey. For a staycation with opulence, splash out at The Shard and enjoy the experience of 360° views over London, 800 feet high; then spoil yourselves to dinner afterwards at Aqua Shard opening this month or at some of the heavenly SE1 eateries. M25 BECKONS: Sometimes, as much as we’d like to avoid it, a great day out calls for fully pumped tyres and sandwiches in the back of the car, but you don’t have to go too far to find a special day out. Leeds Castle in Maidstone, aptly subtitled ‘the loveliest castle in the world, really can please the whole family, with its sensational gardens and sprawling historic buildings, but did you know you can also play golf there, roam leisurely on a segway and even hire a hot air balloon? For those looking for real adrenaline, head over to Go Ape and get white-knuckled with tree top zip wires, tarzan-style swings, rope crossings and obstacle courses for adults and children. And with stunning awardwinning holiday parks dotted about Kent, such as Thirftwood Holiday Park in Stanstead Village, Sevenoaks or Fox Hunter Holiday Park, Ramsgate, - sleepover and savour the moment. On stage Greenwich Theatre’s Artistic Director, James Haddrell, encourages us to get involved...
At Greenwich Theatre we are lucky enough to host some of the best theatre companies from around the UK and, this autumn, audiences will be able to look out for a treat heading to Greenwich from Los Angeles as well. However, some of the most rewarding work that we see at the theatre is not professional – it is the open workshops that we offer, giving local people the chance to get involved and try out theatre in a whole new way. Thanks to funding from Youth Music UK this includes Ultraviolet, our open access teenage choir, which already has 20 young singers and which is now recruiting more performers from Greenwich, Lewisham and Bexley. The choir meets weekly after school, it is entirely free to join and there are no auditions. The group has already performed at Blackheath Halls, Sadler’s Wells and the O2, and new members will get the chance to perform at a range of events over the coming year. Having built an enviable reputation for our awardwinning work with children and young people, this year we have joined forces with Montage Theatre Arts and extended our workshop programme to include theatre workshops for older people. With a weekly performance workshop every Thursday morning, we have now taken the advice of the many regular participants and are launching Performance Lab, our first ever Summer School for older people. From single day workshops in movement, voice and improvisation to a three day theatre workshop on the Greenwich Theatre stage, the Summer School is open to all older people with no previous experience required. For us at Greenwich Theatre, whether you are in the audience, in the workshop studio or on the stage, we want you to feel at home – so come on in and make yourselves comfortable! Cockney Rebel opens up! It’s possible there isn’t a living soul who doesn’t know the 70s superhit ‘Make Me Smile’, but what about the man behind the music? Claire Allen talks to Steve Harley before he headlines Greenwich Summer Sessions later this month.
S
teve Harley was born in Deptford, South London, on 27 February 1951, the second of five children. As a child, Harley suffered from polio, spending four years in hospital up to the age of 16. While in hospital recovering from surgery, Steve was first introduced to the poetry of Eliot and Lawrence, the prose of Steinbeck, Wolf and Hemingway, and the music of Bob Dylan and realised that his life was likely to be preoccupied with words and music. Harley started out playing in bars and clubs in the early 1970s, mainly at folk venues on open-mike nights. He also busked around London on the underground and in Portobello Road. While auditioning for folk band Odin in 1971, he met violinist John Crocker, with whom he formed Cockney Rebel in late 1972. One Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel single, Make Me Smile (come up and see me), reached number one in 1975 in the UK and many European countries and is regularly voted among the top singles in the history of the charts, which covers six decades of releases. The performing rights society has confirmed Make Me Smile one of the most played records in British broadcasting. The song has been covered more than 100 times in seven languages and has been featured in several movies including The Full Monty (whose soundtrack album went triple platinum in the UK, and platinum in the USA and Australia), Velvet Goldmine, Best and Saving Grace. The song has also been used on more than twenty TV and radio advertising campaigns around the world.

You now live in Suffolk but you were born in Deptford and grew up in south east London Yes! I have fantastic memories of growing up not far from Millwall’s Old Den, who my dad incidentally played for during the war. I attended Haberdasher’s Askes’ on Telegraph Hill, so when my wife and I were driving through Greenwich recently I excitedly pointed out all my old childhood haunts to her. I learnt to swim just up the road from the Borough Hall, where we'll be performing, and shared a few cheeky snogs near there when I was a kid - so that’ll be a slightly different experience when I go back there.
Literature was a big inspiration for your early work with Cockney Rebel, is that still the case with your most recent albums? Nowadays it’s drawn from my family, and the people and things going on around me. A lot of our fans have grown with us, so they connect with this too. There is one song, Journey’s End, which is about a father sending his daughter off to university and that definitely resonates with the crowd; you even spot grown men shedding a tear from time-to-time.
What else can we expect from the Summer Sessions gig? There’ll be a blend of the classics (Make Me Smile will, of course, be on the set list) and a selection from the last two albums, so there will be fresh songs for fans to hear too.
What do you think makes good music? Oh, words. My desert island discs would be anything by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell or Leonard Cohen – I’d be quite content with just them. And I might be the only person in the world to think this but ABBA would be my absolute nightmare, with their bubblegum lyrics and non-existent harmonies.
Can you describe your music in just three words? (Pauses) Now that is hard... I could think of a hundred words to describe what I love about other artists. I’d say, well-intentioned. Can I go with one hyphenated word instead?
And if you had to suggest an album to introduce someone to your music? The Quality of Mercy for my solo stuff, and the second Cockney Rebel album: The Psychomodo.

Schemes for dreams Why rent when you could buy with a little help asks Nannette Fielding
T
he Help to Buy scheme expands a previous scheme, FirstBuy, which was aimed solely at first-time buyers. It enables all purchasers to put down a 5% deposit on a newly built home, much less than some banks now demand. Up to 20% of the cost of the home will be funded by a shared equity loan, which will be interest-free for the first five years. This will in effect see the government taking a stake
in the value of borrowers' homes. It plans to invest £3.5bn in these loans. The value of the shared equity loan is linked to the property's value. So, for example, if the value of the property has doubled by the time the shared equity loan is repaid, the amount the borrower has to repay will have doubled, too. In year six, borrowers will have to pay a 1.75% annual fee, which will rise by 1% above the Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure of inflation every year after that. The remainder of the value of the property is paid for with a standard mortgage, to cover up to 75% of the loan. Whereas the previous scheme FirstBuy was only open to first-time buyers, this one will be available to all buyers of newly built homes. Previously there was also an income limit of £60,000 a year, but this will no longer apply. It will cover newly built homes up to the value of £600,000.
The Help To Buy mortgage guarantee scheme will be open from January next year and run for three years. It will enable you buy a newly built home or an existing property with a deposit of only 5% of the purchase price as the Government guarantees 15% of value of mortgage. Help To Buy mortgage guarantees will be open to both first-time buyers and home movers. You won’t be able to get a Help To Buy mortgage guarantee if you’re planning on renting out the property. To qualify for a Help To Buy mortgage guarantee, your new home must be: Priced £600,000 or less, your main home (you can’t use Help To Buy to buy a second home or a buy-tolet property) and owned fully by you (you can’t use Help To Buy for shared ownership or shared equity purchases). And you must be either a UK citizen or someone with the right to remain indefinitely in the UK. You don’t have to be a first-time buyer and there’s no limit on your level of income. But you can’t use Help To Buy with any other publicly funded mortgage scheme. More information from www.gov.uk/affordablehome-ownership-schemes
