A ready-served architectural analysis is provided by the Built environment condition map through the extraction of three main streets and graphically representing their qualities. It is found that there is a noticeable fragmentation and devaluation of façade quality closer to the canal. While a range of new functions WILL BE PLACED into Gowanus, creating a common interest to attract visitors as compared to the current situation, residual change requires the recognition of every single conditions and preserving them in a sustainable, attractive way. Hence fragmentation of built forms will be parallel to the existing architectural quality of Gowanus.

Brief The idea is to redesign the environmental school grounds currently under-used outdoor space to adhere to these strategies: its future outdoor classrooms to resonate with the unique site context, to drive design strategy directly by target user-group of school-aged children, to establish a connection between site configuration and existing teaching schedule and to consider a minimum 50 year span of the environment’s changing context.

Brief The design task consisted of a three stage design development. The first stage initiated by mapping and analysis of the town of Pomona, which resulted in a pod - a 5 x 5 m structure that enhanced public space use and is adaptable to be placed at any strategic point of the town. The second stage acted as a transitional stage between the POD structure and the building’s schematic proposal of the third stage - functions, themes and poetic language translated in a larger built form. The third stage directly responded to circulation, zoning and cultural overlays in a public building designated for communal use.

Building facade operation stages
Stage 2 - Node structure Multiplication of POD structures and the space created in between them has initiated the development of built form. Since the space among pods is external, masterplanning needed a integrative approach to seamlessly connect with the large public space in the centre of the town. The con-

cept of a building facade has been critically investigated in the form of semi-circular structures made mobile along structural connection lines between the two sides of the “building. This established a total functional interrelation between a shading device, a storage/display unit, a fruit pressing tub and a building facade.

Stage 3 - Median Market The conceptual idea for the functional facade of the third stage saw a rethink of the approach: utilize the exclusively Australian character element of the louvre window. The multiplied use of its redesigned form enabled a functionally fully integrated struc-
