PARKS & RECREATION 2011 Winter/Spring Programs

January - April 2011

The mission of the Merriam Parks and Recreation department is to provide first-class facilities and parks, and enhance the quality of life for all residents and visitors through education, recreation, and cultural opportunities.

MERRIAM PARKS & RECREATION

As 2010 comes to a close it's a good time to celebrate the highlights of the year within the parks and recreation department. Thanks to the efforts of our hard-working staff, there are a number of significant accomplishments to recognize this year. The Merriam Farmers' Market had record-breaking attendance with almost 17,000 visitors. This is an increase of 37% over 2009. We would like to express our appreciation to our market vendors who provide arts and crafts, plants and flowers, and high-quality produce and other edible items for sale each weekend. The Merriam Aquatic Center had record-breaking attendance of almost 27,000 patrons. Revenues increased 11%, while expenditures decreased more than 14% from 2009. Aquatic center manager Amy McClure, who serves Mill Valley High School as a physical education and health education instructor during the school year, was awarded the Outstanding School Health Educator award from the National School Health Education Association. Numerous special events were held in our parks and facilities to engage and enrich our Merriam families. There were evening concerts, art exhibition openings, parties in neighborhood parks, dad-daughter and mom-son dances, Halloween and Christmas events, a spectacular car and motorcycle show and a rain-drenched Turkey Creek Festival. In all, almost 20,000 people attended and enjoyed the events and festivities. Park improvements are on-going and just beginning this year. At Waterfall Park multi-use practice fields were installed and should be ready for use by youth sports teams by fall of 2011. The Turkey Creek Streamway Trail will be extended northward on Merriam Drive from Waterfall Park to Merriam's northern boundary with Overland Park via a 6-feet wide sidewalk extension. Work is expected to be completed in early 2011, resulting in a total trail length of more than 4 miles of trail. We wish you all a happy new year and hope to see you at our 2011 events!
