“ We love living in Merriam!”

In 2007, we relocated from Missouri to Merriam to be close to our daughter’s family. At the time, we didn’t realize what a special gold nugget that Merriam is.

Supporting local small businesses is important, and Merriam provides almost everything we need with locally-owned businesses, as well as the convenience of larger department stores.

Participating several times in the Turkey Creek Festival 5K and the Turkey Creek Festival gives us the small-town feel that we enjoy.

We enjoy the Merriam Community Center and library, and especially, the always changing artwork at the Tim Murphy Art Gallery.

We love living in Merriam! The yard and large item cleanups, the financial help for property improvements, and efficient maintenance of streets and sidewalks all point to a City Council and administration who really do want the best for the residents. We appreciate our Ward 4 City Councilmembers and the Public Works Department for always quickly answering any questions for us. We're thankful to be part of such a high-quality city.

– Mark and Betty Lou Peckham

HEARTS ACR SS MERRIAM

Hearts Across Merriam is a special extension of our I Heart Merriam campaign, created to celebrate Merriam's 75th birthday. We aspire for this initiative to unite the community, inspiring connection through art and exploration. Local artist Dierk Van Keppel with Rock Cottage Glassworks crafted 75 beautiful, custom-blown glass hearts, each unique and full of character. From January through October, we’ll hide these hearts in various public spaces across Merriam, encouraging residents and visitors to explore the city’s parks, landmarks, and trails in a fun and engaging way.

Each month, a new batch of hearts will be tucked away, waiting to be found. If you stumble upon one of these treasures, take a moment to snap a photo and share it on Facebook or Instagram. Be sure to tag @exploremerriam and use the hashtag #HeartsAcrossMerriam to show off your discovery and share what you love about Merriam. Then, you’re welcome to take the heart with you as a keepsake.

This initiative not only highlights the creativity of local talent but also inspires people to discover the beauty and charm of Merriam. From hidden corners of parks to unexpected city landmarks, the hunt for these handcrafted hearts will take you on a journey to appreciate Merriam’s landscape, history, and artistic spirit.

Join the heart-hunt adventure, share your finds, and be a part of Merriam’s 75th birthday activities year-round! Visit merriam.org/75 or follow our socials above for information to uncover the hidden glass hearts! If you find one, snap a picture and tag us to share with the community!

FROM TRAILS TO TASTES:

WHY MERRIAM IS A MUST-VISIT DESTINATION

Midwest charm is realized in Merriam. As a mom to three, we’ve bounced across the heartland seeking destinations that offer a wide breadth of activities, all within a setting that still feels manageable if you’re corralling little ones.

Merriam hits all the marks. Nestled in the heart of Johnson County, it boasts plenty of places to play, eat, shop, and explore – without the overwhelming crowds you find in some of the metro’s other cities. This blend of hometown warmth and unique attractions easily make it an ideal spot for a day trip or weekend escape for Kansas City locals and tourists alike. Here, you’ll find the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and small-town ambiance that makes Merriam truly special.

ADVENTURE AWAITS ON THE TURKEY CREEK STREAMWAY TRAIL

Whether you’re looking to let little ones run off some energy or prefer a pretty spot to sit and linger a bit, the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail offers a suburban outdoor experience that’s hard to beat.

The nearly 4-mile paved path takes you through wooded areas, grassy areas, along the water’s edge, and right into charming downtown Merriam. Along the trail you’ll find hidden pockets of greenery, scenic overlooks, pollinator gardens, and

The well-maintained paths make it accessible year-round.

SPECIAL EVENTS DESIGNED TO MAKE MEMOIRES

The city hosts events throughout the year, so while you’re plotting out your visit, make sure to check out the local happenings at exploremerriam.com.

If you find yourself visiting in the fall and enjoy live music and local culture, don’t miss Merriam Drive Live. This October event brings the community together for a day filled with entertainment, food, and activities, has a proven track record of being fun for all ages. Catch food trucks, corn hole tournaments, tastings, and performances from local bands. With two stages capping each end of the covered Merriam Marketplace space, there’s very little down time between sets. There’s even experiences geared specifically toward the littlest event goers like face painting and balloon animals. It’s one my girls are *still* talking about.

The event has quickly become a favorite fall tradition, and for tourists, it’s an excellent way to experience the city’s welcoming, lively atmosphere.

CULINARY

Perhaps one of the most pleasant surprises when visiting Merriam is the diverse culinary scene. There are a handful of locally-owned eateries that bring big flavor and are great spots for some family togetherness. One of our favorites is El Pulgarcito. Don’t let a packed dining room deter you. They move fast and the authentic El Salvadoran food is absolutely worth experiencing.

With its proximity to Kansas City, Merriam is an easily accessible destination that offers a quiet retreat, an active adventure, and the chance to experience different cultures — all in a single trip.

ATTRACTIONS FOR ALL

Between hitting the rink at Skate City, catching a movie at Cinemark, or shopping at the state’s only IKEA — there’s no shortage of things for the whole family to do in Merriam. But if you’re looking for a truly unique experience, allow me to point you to Gemini Shop and Salt Spa. This locally-owned spa features a Himalayan salt-lined room where guests can unwind in the most zen, peaceful setting. The therapy itself is known for helping with respiratory issues, skin conditions, and overall stress relief and it’s the perfect place to recharge, especially after a day exploring the city or trails. When your session is over, you can shop crystals, bath salts, and more.

Whether you’re familiar with salt therapy or trying it for the first time, this experience in Merriam will leave you mentally and physically refreshed and ready to take on your next adventure.
