Our History...

O

Our history began in 1826 when the Shawnee Indians were moved into this region from their settlements in Ohio and Missouri. Local missionaries were intent on upgrading the Shawnees’ lives by converting them to Christianity. As the tribe moved to lands that would become Johnson County, the Quakers followed and built a mission in 1836. A Tennessean, David Gee Campbell, bought acreage from Mary Parks in what is now known as Merriam. In 1864, he moved his home to the south side of Johnson Drive near Turkey Creek. In honor of our founder, the town was named Campbellton which included approximately 20 homes and a few businesses. Railroad development played a major role in the settlement of this area with a route from Kansas City through the Turkey Creek basin to Olathe. The railroad, at that time, was known as the “Kansas City, Fort Scott and Gulf.” In 1870, the first station in Campbellton was built, and by 1880, the name of the town was changed to “Merriam,” in honor of Charles Merriam, a one-time secretary and treasurer of the railway. As Kansas City became the focal point of trade, communication and transportation, railroad executives saw the need for a large, well-planned amusement park and thus purchased 40 acres in Merriam. Merriam Park was completed and dedicated in July, 1880 by former President Ulysses S. Grant.

MERRIAM PARK WAS A GRAND AMUSEMENT IN 1880. COSTING 25 CENTS TO ENTER, THE PARK ATTRACTED MORE THAN 20,000 VISITORS PER DAY. One of Merriam Park’s superintendents, George Kessler, went on to plan the park and boulevard system of Kansas City. By the turn of the century, Kansas City constructed its own amusements and Merriam Park went out of existence. Another popular recreation

area in Merriam was Hocker Grove. Running along the trolley line, Hocker Grove existed from 1907-1919 and contained a picnic ground, baseball field and pavilion. Merriam became the biggest town in Northeast Kansas around 1930. Four grocery stores, two hardware stores, four gas stations, three drug stores, two dry goods stores, three restaurants, a bank, two garages, two barber shops, a beauty shop, two feed and coal yards, two taverns, a lumber yard, chicken hatchery, two realty businesses, a dry cleaning store, insurance agency, two churches and a grade school all called Merriam home at this time. One of the most recognizable historic movements in Merriam was Webb v. School District 90, a lawsuit filed on behalf of 39 families whose children were rejected from the white-only school, known as Merriam’s South Park Elementary. Corinthian Nutter, a true pioneer in desegregation, was the key witness in the lawsuit that helped create history and pave the way for the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision to permanently remove segregation from the public school system.

“SCHOOLS SHOULDN’T BE FOR A COLOR. THEY SHOULD BE FOR CHILDREN.” -- CORINTHIAN NUTTER A leader in the development of the Kansas City area, Merriam was the site of the first Bell Telephone office in Johnson County in 1908; the first public library in 1956; the first major park (Antioch Park) in Johnson County in 1956; the first fullservice hospital (Shawnee Mission Medical Center) in 1962; and the first home to Johnson County Community College from 1969-1972. Today, Merriam is a vibrant and growing community within the Kansas City metro region.

Booming Business...

I

Shawnee Mission Medical Center

In Merriam, we’re working to ensure our community remains an innovative, forward-thinking place for generations to come. Our city is a dynamic commercial hub within Johnson County, ranking as one of the highest “pull factor” communities in the State of Kansas (3.16 FY 2012). Of the $561 million taxable retail sales in Merriam in 2012, roughly $400 million comes from non-resident spending inside our community. Healthy retail spending, low cost of doing business, unparalleled convenience to the Interstate and a relatively low unemployment rate all contribute to Merriam’s thriving business culture and are the reasons so many companies locate in Merriam.

Merriam’s Employers As we move forward, major investments, new businesses bringing new jobs, infrastructure improvements and a proenterprise atmosphere will undoubtedly solidify Merriam’s prosperity and growth. Merriam’s commitment to sustainable development will span many years and help maintain our position as an appealing place to work, live and play.

The sight of Old Glory waving majestically in the breeze on a beautiful 4th of July will quicken one’s heart and bring a tear to the eye. Now multiply that beautiful sight by over 1,200 American flags and you have Flags 4 Freedom in Merriam, Kansas. Located on Merriam Drive, this patriotic flag display thrills thousands of visitors each year. One group helping to place those 1,200 flags is Boy Scout Troop 162, a group of 28 scouts ages 11-18 from Overland Park, Merriam, Mission and Shawnee. Together with their scout leader, Mike Jones, these young people have been helping with Flags 4 Freedom since its inception in 2006.

According to Mike, “The greatest reward from helping with the flags is meeting the people for whom the flags are set up for. When the young men hear stories from parents or spouses that currently have family serving or have lost family members in service, it brings home the reality of the true costs of our freedom. We want the youth to understand the tremendous ongoing sacrifices that are made to allow us to continue to enjoy the freedoms we have. We also want them to see the healing the flag displays bring to those who are missing or mourning a loved one. Our small actions of appreciation bring comfort to family members and that is why we help with the displays to begin with.”

“I can’t thank you enough for all your help arranging the surprise trip in October. The timing was perfect. What can I say about Anton and Dan----they are masters! So different, so unique--people couldn’t pick a favorite stop. We are all still talking about what we saw--the instruments, the loft, everything. The ice-cream sundaes at the soda fountain were also perfect. We did make a stop at the rec center and some did visit the lovely art gallery. Thank you again! Your itinerary is the best! We all highly recommend it!!!!”

STRAWBERRY HILL POVITICA

ROCK COTTAGE GLASSWORKS

Pova-teet-sa. You don’t need to be able to pronounce it once you stuff your mouth with the delicousness known as Povitica. This popular swirled dessert bread (dating back to Grandmother’s original recipe in the early 1900s) is widely known across the world and sells out regularly on QVC. Lucky for you, it’s sold right here in Merriam---and the best part is you can come in and try samples for FREE. With 11 flavors and growing, your tastebuds will thank you. povitica.com | 913.631.1002

Beauty seems such a small word for these artfully inspired creations by Merriam’s Dierk Van Keppel. Combining the ancient craft of glassblowing with the modern approach of fusing glass since 1981, Dierk’s vision culminates in an artistic expression of color, form, clarity, opacity and depth. Check out “Trinity” at Merriam’s Shawnee Mission Medical Center or consider a unique piece for your personal collection. rockcottageglassworks.com

VALOMILK

K.C. STRINGS VIOLIN SHOP Pretty string instruments lined up in perfect rows. A beautiful sight yes, but the sound--exquisite. And, these instruments are created for the young beginner all the way to professional, symphony musicians. K.C. Strings is the only American maker of violins, violas, cellos and basses. Each custom piece is made to create a classic Italian sound—no wonder the greatest musicians come to K.C. Strings. kcstrings.com | 913.677.0400

Chocolate—the universal word for “more, please.” Add a gooey marshmallow center and things go quickly to the next level of food coma. Sifers Valomilk has been a staple in downtown Merriam for over 20 years and everyone local knows where to find these little pieces of candy heaven. Each Valomik package contains two milk chocolate flowing marshmallow cups---one for you and one to share (or not). Go online to locate retailers who offer Valomilk! valomilk.com

Where do I go when I get sick? Shawnee Mission Medical Center

Shawnee Mission Health provides access to quick, quality health care at several locations throughout Johnson County. Although one of the best ways to maintain good health throughout life is regular check-ups with your primary care doctor, accidents and illnesses sometimes occur when your physician isn’t available. If you’re like many people, you may wonder when you should see your primary care doctor, when you need to go to urgent care or when visiting an emergency room is best. Consider the following guidelines: • A primary care provider is your starting point for non-emergency medical concerns. For example, if you are experiencing flu symptoms, need a vaccination before going on vacation or are interested in learning more about preventive medicine, a doctor is your best bet. You not only have that familiar face, but you also don’t have to start from scratch to explain your medical situation. • Urgent care can address non-emergency medical concerns, such as respiratory infections, sprained ankles and skin irritations, and is often available when most physician offices are closed. • A visit to the emergency room is necessary if you begin experiencing symptoms that require immediate medical attention. For example, crushing chest pain, head trauma or difficulty breathing require immediate care.

For locations and hours, visit ShawneeMission.org/whenigetsick. For answers to your health questions or to find a doctor, call the ASK-A-NURSE Resource Center, 24/7, at 913-676-7777 or visit ShawneeMission.org.
