This summer will be one to remember! The Merriam Community Center opens this June, and I plan to be first in line to see it on opening day and greet you at the door!

I’ve waited years to see this community center come to fruition.

Construction crews are working tirelessly to make sure our building is complete on time and on budget. And, I do mean OUR building. You helped get us here by passing the ¼-cent sales tax that funded the project in 2017, and made sure the building was just right for our community through your participation in the design process along the way.

This project has always been about building community and giving Merriam a place to come together. I hope you’ll join us this summer in our new facility and experience it for yourself.

New City Councilmembers There are two new faces on the Merriam City Council. Whitney Yadrich and Bruce Kaldahl took the oath of office in January.

Yadrich and Kaldahl succeeded outgoing councilmembers Al Frisby and Nancy Hupp. Frisby served on the City Council since 2011 and Hupp since 2003.

The City of Merriam is excited to open our new 66,000-square-foot community center to the general public on June 8! We'll welcome in charter members for a soft opening beginning June 1.

Membership provides full access to the facility, including an indoor pool with slides, lazy river, lap lanes, and a warm water therapy pool; outdoor pool with lap lanes, diving boards, and zip line; industry-leading fitness equipment; walking/jogging track; full-size gym with options for basketball, volleyball, and pickleball; and space to gather and host events.

Pools will open according to Johnson County COVID-19 phased reopening plan.

The City is partnering with Roeland Park and Mission outdoor pools to give all Merriam residents, MCC charter members, and summer members free access to a pool Memorial Day through June 7 – just show your proof of residency or membership card.

Boy Scouts will help us take down the American, Kansas, and City of Merriam flags, which we'll transfer to the new community center the next day. Stop by the Merriam Community Center on June 1 at 9 a.m. as we raise the flags with the help of the Merriam Police Honor Guard. Enjoy coffee and donuts while supplies last!

Tucked in the South Park neighborhood, this shelter provides picnic tables and a large grill­– perfect for all events. Amenities include a playground and swings, walking trail, basketball court, pickleball court, and open green space.

This 5.25-acre park provides access to the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail. The pavilion has picnic tables and a large grill. Amenities include a playground and swings, open green space, and paved parking.

This facility is perfect for corporate picnics, family reunions, and other gatherings. Amenities include a bridge to the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail, electrical hookups, playground equipment, and a sand volleyball court across the street.

Tables and chairs are not provided.

This park houses Julius McFarlin Fields. There are soccer fields available for team practices. Fields are reserved by the hour.

Outdoor Rental Spaces

Merriam Voters Approve the Renewal of 1/4-Cent Special Sales Tax Merriam voters in January said "yes" to renewing a 1/4-cent special sales tax with 80% support. The tax pays for the City’s street and stormwater projects.

More than 2,000 residents cast their ballots with a 28% voter turnout.

The special sales tax can only be used to fund street, bridge, and drainage improvement projects in Merriam.

More than $20 million in planned projects are eligible for funding through 2030. These projects include Merriam Drive from Johnson Drive to Shawnee Mission Parkway, Carter Ave. from Merriam Drive to 67th St., and nearly 52,000 linear feet of storm drain rated poor to fair. The City will also use funds to continue maintaining roads and residential streetlights, sidewalks, and small drainage projects across Merriam.

"Thank you for entrusting us to use your money to provide the high level of service you deserve and expect from our city," City Administrator Chris Engel said.

67th Street Improvements Construction crews recently completed work on 67th St. Crews repaved the entire road from Switzer Lane to Antioch Road, added new sidewalks and curbs where needed, and added new streetlights. They also placed a new pedestrian bridge across Turkey Creek.

The project was funded by the Âź-cent street and stormwater sales tax and matching grants.

Johnson Drive Improvements In April, construction crews will begin a long-term road improvements project on Johnson Drive from the BNSF train tracks to east city limits. This project includes repaving the entire roadway, new curbs and sidewalks, new streetlights, and ADA compliant ramps. There will be partial lane closures throughout the entire project, which should be completed by mid-October, weather permitting.

I-35 Expansion and Detours The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) recently began widening I-35 between 67th and 75th streets.

KDOT closed the southbound I-35 on- and off-ramps at 75th St. through July. Traffic should detour to Shawnee Mission Parkway.

The northbound I-35 on-ramp at 75th St. will be closed mid-July through November, when KDOT anticipates the project will be complete.

Fall Tree Sale The City of Merriam will offer a tree sale in September, with an order deadline in mid-August. Choose from a variety of trees, including maples, oaks, elms, flowering crabapples, and more! Merriam residents will receive a $15 subsidy on the first two trees purchased.

Fill Out the 2020 U.S. Census When it Arrives in Your Mailbox Everyone counts in the 2020 Census!

By mid-April, you'll receive the 2020 U.S. Census. You can fill out the paper form and return via mail or complete the census online or by phone.

The 10-question form is from the U.S. Census Bureau. The bureau collects information from all persons in the nation every 10 years.

Participation is mandatory, but your answers will be confidential. You'll have to count everyone who lives in your home, including kids and extended family.

Information collected determines how much money Kansas gets from the federal government.

Kansas distributes this money to county and local programs that likely affect you.

The 2020 Census is safe, easy and important.

Data collection begins March 2020 and continues through August 2020. You will receive a letter with instructions for completing the census beginning in March 2020. Mitchell Fowler has lived in Merriam for 70 years. He’s an engaged community member who’s spent time on both Merriam’s Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) and Planning Commission.

He’s currently a Comprehensive Plan 2040 committee member. Mitchell has two daughters and three grandchildren.

How did you end up living in Merriam?

My grandparents moved to Merriam in 1932. I graduated from Shawnee Mission North in 1964 and attended Kansas State College of Pittsburg for one year before I was drafted into the U.S. Army in December 1965. I would have to say

my two years serving my country has made me appreciate Merriam.

What do you like about public service and why is it necessary?

I like public service because it gives me the opportunity to give back to my neighbors and the community. I’ve been involved in the BZA and the Planning Commission for about 10 years.

Public service is a must for resident safety, maintenance of our streets, and fire and police protection. Being a public servant, to me, is having a personal appreciation for living in Merriam – the best city in Johnson County.

You’re working on the Comp Plan 2040. What’s that experience been like?

My involvement in Comp Plan 2040 started last fall with the intent of having as much input in my hometown as possible.

Merriam residents’ pride should elevate with the ideas the Comp Plan leaders and volunteers have for moving our city forward.

Why is the Comp Plan so important?

The Comp Plan Advisory Committee helps develop the vision of residents’ input and suggestions and goals of the City of Merriam. We are working hard to make our city first class in every way.

Block Party Grants Now Available Plan an awesome block party and get to know your neighbors!

Back by popular demand, the City of Merriam will reimburse residents up to $200 to host a block party.

You can use the Neighborhood Block Party Grant to help cover party-related expenses such as food, paper goods, party favors, and to hire entertainment/performers.

New Firetruck to Serve Merriam Residents Overland Park firefighters recently dedicated a new fire truck in Merriam. The ceremony included firefighters washing the truck’s wheels and then manually pushing Truck 46 into the fire station bay – a tradition when putting a new truck into service.

The City of Merriam bought the truck that Overland Park Fire Department crews will operate. It will serve Merriam and northern Overland Park residents.

Sgt. Brokaw Promoted to Captain Sgt. Chris Brokaw was promoted to captain in March. Brokaw started his career with the Merriam Police Department in 2001. As a captain, Brokaw will oversee the department’s support services division. He said he’s excited to move into this new role with the police department.

2019 Merriam Police Officer of the Year – Capt. Chris Brokaw Since 2001, Cpt. Brokaw has held a variety of positions and special assignments at the Merriam Police Department. He worked as a patrol officer, detective, as a sergeant of the investigation’s unit, and was recently promoted to captain.

In 2019, the Merriam Police Department faced numerous challenges when two officers were diagnosed with cancer just days apart and six other officers left the department for a variety of reasons. Brokaw was one of many officers who pitched in and went the extra mile during this difficult time. He helped organize numerous fundraisers for both officers with cancer. Brokaw also took on additional responsibilities in his role as a detective supervisor to test and assist with hiring replacement officers. He did so each day with a positive attitude and a sense of service. Congratulations and thank you for your service, Capt. Brokaw!

A native of Mississippi, Detective Kristin Jasinski started her career with the Merriam Police Department in 2015. She was promoted to Master Police Officer in 2018 and became a detective last year. Jasinski served eight years in the United States Army. She completed her degree in Law Enforcement from Metropolitan State University and the Minnesota POST Academy in Minneapolis. She and her wife, Rose, love spending time with their families and traveling. Jasinski is the recipient of two Life Saving Awards.

How did you end up working at the Merriam Police Department?

While in college and completing the POST Academy, I worked full time for IKEA as a manager with the Minneapolis Safety and Security Team. Many of my close friends and coworkers transferred to the Merriam store when it was built. I visited frequently and jumped on the opportunity to work for Merriam.

What do you like about the Merriam Police Department?

There’s a community and family that we’ve built

within the department. We are blessed to have a culture that brings us closer together, while also instilling the importance of doing the right things for the right reasons.

Merriam has a community-oriented police department – what does that mean to you and how do you participate?

This was a major factor that drew me to Merriam.

Working hard to earn and have the support of our community makes a world of difference in this profession. It makes our jobs easier and, ultimately, safer when the community has our back. I love getting out and letting people see us beyond the uniform!

What are you involved with outside the department?

My wife and I are very involved with War Horses for Veterans in Stilwell, Kansas. We help out as law enforcement mentors with War Horses’ new First Responder Program. It’s a super cool organization that does incredible work. Everyone should look into it!

ID Card Admission

The Merriam Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Irene B. French Community Center. The Board is comprised of one representative from each of the four City wards, three at-large positions, and one youth representative. Fitness center patrons must show a photo ID card with proof of residency. If no ID is available, an ID card can be provided with proper documentation for $5. Residency information must be updated annually.

Register Early!

Please register at least three working days prior to the start date of a class to prevent cancellation due to low enrollment. Many of our classes fill early due to popularity.

Scholarships

A limited number of recreation scholarships are available to help defray the cost of class and membership registration fees.

Refund / Cancellation / Transfer

The City of Merriam Parks and Recreation Department prides itself on providing first-class recreational opportunities to Merriam residents. Although patrons desire to attend all sessions for which they are registered, there may be circumstances that prevent them from completing programs. Recognizing the need to provide assistance in these situations, programs, memberships, and rental refunds will be handled in accordance with the policy posted on the website and available at the Irene B. French Community Center (IBFCC). All refunds are processed Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.– 5 p.m. For purpose of point of notification, written requests that can be verified by date will be accepted during all hours of operation at the IBFCC front desk. Refunds for transactions paid by credit card, regardless of the amount, will be credited to the account on the day the cancellation is approved. Transactions paid by cash or check will be reimbursed by check, if more than $10. Please allow up to three weeks for payment. Refunds of less than $10 will be reimbursed with cash and will require a signature from the person eligible for the refund.

Administration reserves the right to review and alter policies as needed. Policy changes and notifications will be provided in writing on the website and posted at the IBFCC front desk.

Facility users are expected to respect IBFCC property and fellow users. Destruction of property, profanity, and abusive behavior won't be tolerated. Violators will be asked to leave the facility, and repeat offenders will have privileges permanently revoked.

The use of tobacco products is prohibited in the IBFCC and within 10 feet of all entrances.

The IBFCC isn't staffed to provide individual child supervision.

Please don't drop children off and leave them unattended.

Children 8 and under must be accompanied by a responsible person age 14 or older. No person under the age of 16 is allowed to participate in, or attend, adult fitness classes.

Sharing in Your Community’s Future

Established in 1988 as a means to provide support for Merriam's recreation facilities, programs, and parks, the Merriam Parks, Recreation, and Community Center Foundation has provided more than $175,000 to support the Parks and Recreation Department. The Foundation’s largest fundraising activity is the annual Flags 4 Freedom event, held during the week of July 4. Recent programs include an annual donation from the Heartland Artist Exhibition to the Merriam Parks and Recreation Department permanent collection; scholarship assistance for Merriam Parks and Recreation programs and memberships; new benches at all playgrounds; and assistance in the renovation and expansion of the Tim Murphy Art Gallery.

Congregate Meals Monday–Friday Participate in the Johnson County Nutrition Program. This meal program is offered at 11:30 a.m. each weekday. Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (AFEP)

Pickleball

Keep moving with this low-impact physical activity program proven to reduce pain and decrease stiffness. This recreational, chair-based exercise class includes range of motion exercises that are suitable for every fitness level and ability. $3 donation suggested. Registration not required.

Pickleball is so popular because any age, gender, and athletic ability can play. It has a unique quality where both friendship and activity are on the court together. It's fun, easy to learn, and uses little equipment. The game combines pingpong, tennis, and badminton.

Turkey Creek Streamway Trail 75th St. to Antioch Road

Trails are a popular and inexpensive way for everyone in the family to enjoy some level of physical activity and focus on health and wellness.

Regardless of what activity you're participating in – walking, jogging, biking, or skating – everyone should follow the same set of guidelines.

Below is a list provided by the International Bicycle Fund.

▶ Be Courteous – respect other users regardless of their mode, speed, or skill level.

▶ Be Predictable – travel in a consistent manner and always look behind before changing positions on the trail.

▶ Don’t Block the Trail – use only half the trail if in a group or with pets.

▶ Dogs Must Remain on a Leash – please clean up after your pet.

Waste stations are located along the trail for your convenience.

▶ Obey All Traffic Signs and Signals – use extra caution where the trail crosses the street and use cross signals when available.

▶ Give Audible Warning BEFORE Passing – use voice, bell, or horn and allow person you're passing time to respond.

▶ Keep Right – except when passing. ▶ Pass on the Left – yield to slower and oncoming traffic, pass with ample separation, and move back to the right when at a safe distance. Remember kids and pets can be unpredictable.

▶ Stopping – move off the trail and beware of others approaching from behind.

▶ Always Exercise Due Care and Caution. ▶ No Motorized Vehicles.

Following these guidelines will allow everyone to have a safe and enjoyable experience on the trails!

There's approximately four miles of paved, multi-use trail running from 75th St. to Antioch Road in Merriam.

The Turkey Creek Streamway Trail passes through wooded areas, a butterfly garden, the AT&T pocket park, and several larger neighborhood parks. Paved parking and access points are provided at the 75th St. entrance, Chatlain Park, Campbell Park, Merriam Marketplace, and Waterfall Park.
