MAYOR’S MESSAGE Now that warmer weather is near, I’m ready to get out and breathe some fresh air. I’m sure you are, too! And, as COVID-19 vaccines become more readily available this spring and summer, we may have the urge to travel. But, before we fly across the country, let’s explore something more local. We know Merriam is a great place to live, but it’s also a fantastic city to play. Ideas for this summer: ▶ Check out Summer Staycation in Merriam ideas on page 10. ▶ Enjoy a wonderful lineup of family-friendly events in July during National Parks and Recreation Month. ▶ Buy a summer membership at the Merriam Community Center, and enjoy both the indoor and outdoor pools. ▶ Host a physically distanced Neighborhood Block Party and get reimbursed up to $200 from the City. There’s no better time to start planning for this summer. Just remember to be responsible – wear a mask when appropriate, physically distance at least six feet, and stay home if you or your loved ones are sick. Here’s to a better and brighter year. Your Mayor,

Ken Sissom

Meet Tad Twidwell

Tad Twidwell is the branch manager for the Johnson County Library Antioch branch. When he’s not working on strategic planning initiatives, Tad hires and manages staff and oversees facility maintenance. Tad’s worked in public service for 17 years. He graduated from Ottawa University and received his master’s degree from Emporia State University. If he’s not at the library, you can find him spending time with his family.

What’s your favorite part about your job?

My favorite part of my job is collaborating with other great public service professionals who’re passionate and dedicated to their work while getting a chance to serve the community in a meaningful capacity.

How has COVID-19 changed your operations?

COVID-19 has changed certain operational models for us. We now quarantine library materials when they’re returned to ensure safety, have limited inperson services, and have moved to more virtual programming.

What do you think about the Antioch branch soon moving to Merriam Municipal Plaza?

It’s an exciting opportunity not only for the Johnson County Library but also the Merriam community. I hope this new location and structure will pique community curiosity and bring new people through our doors to see what services we can offer.

A New Library is in the Works! A fixture in the Merriam community for more than 60 years, the Johnson County Library Antioch branch is moving. The new location – just down the street, next to the Merriam Community Center – will be designed to best meet your needs. Stay connected online at jocolibrary.org and @jocolibrary on social media to find the dates and times for upcoming public input sessions. We can’t wait to hear how Johnson County Library can serve our community for another 60 years!

What are you looking forward to the most with the move?

I think being in a new space and having a chance to serve the public in a new environment.

How do you think it will better serve our residents?

The new location is next to other highly-trafficked businesses and the new community center. This could make it a more convenient location for residents to drop-in and visit us.

Downtown Merriam Project Begins Working to improve one of Merriam’s main roadways, the City is studying Merriam Drive between Johnson Drive and Waterfall Park. The City will look at land uses, traffic, and street design with the goal of making downtown Meriam a more desirable place to live and work. The study also will look at ways to better connect Merriam to Overland Park, Mission, and Kansas City. Look for multiple ways to get involved about future uses for downtown Merriam and to tell us what you think. Find more information at merriam.org/downtown.

Comprehensive Plan Update The City is finalizing the Merriam Comprehensive Plan 2040. This plan addresses the City’s land use, housing, development, sustainability, transportation and mobility, parks and recreation, and facilities and services across our community for the next 20 years. After receiving resident input over the past two years, the plan was adopted at the March Planning Commission meeting. The City Councilmembers considered the plan at their March 22 meeting. View the Comp Plan, and find the latest outcomes at merriam2040.org. SUMMER 2021 ▶ 7

Birthday Parades

Let the Merriam Police Department help celebrate your child’s birthday. Officers will drive by your home with lights and sirens blaring! Contact Capt. Chris Brokaw at 913-322-5566 or cbrokaw@merriam.org to schedule a police parade.

2020 Police Officer of the Year Described as someone with a positive and caring attitude, Det. Jared Ruby was named the 2020 Merriam Police Officer of the Year.

Officer Castaneda on the left with Merriam Police Chief Darren McLaughlin

Life Saving Award In November, Officers Rashad Castaneda and Justin Bilyeu saw a man sitting on the edge of the bridge at 75th St. over I-35. The man told Castaneda he was going to jump off the bridge. As Castaneda talked with him, he saw an opportunity to pull the man from the ledge. The man was transported to AdventHealth Shawnee Mission for mental health assistance. Castaneda’s actions saved the man’s life.

8 ▶ MERRIAM HIGHLIGHTS & RECREATION

Ruby spent much of 2020 training new officers and instructing his peers on the range. But, his greatest achievement was saving a life. In August, Ruby performed CPR and used a defibrillator on a man who had stopped breathing. His quick actions helped the man, who was able to fully recover. Capt. Chris Brokaw said Ruby “constantly represents our department core values by demonstrating ‘courage, sacrifice, and compassion.’” The department’s Officer of the Year Award is a peer-nominated award.

As the Merriam Visitors Bureau director, Karen Crane has welcomed guests to Merriam since 2003. Karen does it all from coordinating motor coach group tours to writing content for the annual visitor guide publication. When she’s not working, Karen is finishing a DIY project at home, walking her dog, Chief, or exploring the surrounding metro with her husband, Linn, of 22 years.

What do you do as Visitors Bureau Director?

I oversee the annual tourism objectives, budget, and Merriam Historic Plaza facility while marketing Merriam as an ideal destination for people coming to the metro area.

How do you try and get people to visit Merriam?

We appeal to the affordable price point in Merriam and the close proximity to other metro area attractions and points of interest. We do that through targeted marketing in leisure and group publications, visitor guide distribution across the state, booths at trade-shows, one-on-one appointments with tour and meeting planners, and word-of-mouth referrals.

What does Merriam have to offer visitors?

Merriam is perfectly situated just a short drive from anywhere in the metro, so we’re a great match for people coming to Kansas City for meetings or conventions, sports teams playing on nearby fields, or leisure seekers looking for an affordable spot to hub out of for a weekend. We also have some really unique places to visit – K.C. Strings Violin Shop and Strawberry Hill Povitica Bakery are one-of-a-kind local makers, and they’re right here in Merriam!

How can Merriam residents benefit from a staycation?

There’s no better way to explore your own city than by being a tourist yourself! We know people are itching to travel after being cooped up for so long, but we also realize many were negatively impacted by the pandemic and may not feel comfortable traveling just yet, or maybe their budget is limited. We created the Merriam Staycation so residents can explore eight suggested spots across Merriam this summer – right in their own city, and most of the options are free!

What do you think is Merriam’s best-kept secret?

I would say one of our best-kept secrets is the pupusas at Anita’s or El Pulgarcito. These tucked-away little restaurants on Johnson Drive are authentic, delicious, and so incredibly welcoming. SUMMER 2021 2021 ▶ ▶ 11 11 SUMMER

Swim Lessons

Swim lessons are all-inclusive and specific for each child’s skill set and include lifesaving and safety techniques. Register your child based on age. For preschool and youth lessons, class levels are used to ensure your child is successful. Children are evaluated at the beginning of each session and placed in the appropriate class level. Children should be able to work with an instructor and participate in swim lessons independently and willingly.

Parent/Child: 6 months–2 years

This lesson is designed as an introduction for parents and children alike. Learn safety tips while your child becomes familiar in the water and picks up basic water movement taught through songs, dances, and other fun forms of teaching. Parents must be in the water with their children. This class takes place in the indoor warm water therapy pool.

Preschool: 3–5 years old

Adult: 13+

Your child will learn basic water safety skills while also growing more comfortable in the water. Students will learn how to safely enter and exit the water, blow bubbles underwater, float, kick, and work on arm movements.

Adult lessons are designed to help each participant reach personal goals. Whether you want to be a proficient lap swimmer, learn to float, or acquire water safety skills, instructors will work to ensure your success!

Private and Semi-Private Lessons

Youth: 6–12 years old

Beginning swimmers are introduced to basic stroke movement and will learn how to be more comfortable in the water. More advanced swimmers are instructed in stroke technique, endurance, and safety skills. CLASS
