The Making of Merriam
A snapshot of Merriam’s humble beginnings which paved the way to become one of the “Top 100 Small Towns Across America” and “The #1 Place to Start a Business in Kansas.”
1
FULL STEAM AHEAD
The railroad opened up vast opportunities for business and recreation in Campbellton (Merriam), namely with the opening of Merriam Park, in operation from 1880-1900 and visited by 20,000 people per day.
3 TRANSPORTATION ON THE RISE Interstate 35 was built through Merriam in 1956 which spurred business growth, residential appeal and convenience to the metro region for trade and commerce. Today, more than 150,000 vehicles pass through Merriam each day.
2 EDUCATION
Merriam was the town where the landmark case (Webb v. School District No. 90) began, ultimately resulting in the Supreme Court’s decision (Brown v. Board of Education) to end segregation in schools. Today, Merriam is part of the awardwinning Shawnee Mission School District.
4 HEALTH CARE FINDS A HOME
In 1962, Shawnee Mission Medical Center landed in Merriam building a 65-bed acute care hospital and medical office facility. Today, Shawnee Mission continues to serve patients at the same location, but with expanded acreage, new technology, increased services and the largest medical staff in the Kansas City region.
SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP
5 THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Merriam has always maintained a very active and diverse blend of recreational offerings for residents to enjoy. From the Turkey Creek Festival to jogging on the Streamway Trail, Party in Your Park events, to the variety of fitness classes and activities, Merriam’s resident and visitor recreation is always top-of-mind.
10 | MERRIAM COMMUNITY & VISITORS GUIDE
In 1998, the Merriam Town Center project was the largest redevelopment in the state of Kansas. Today, IKEA has joined the ranks of retailers, and, sprinkled with our thriving automobile industry, hotels along the frontage roads, small businesses in our downtown and other new developments, Merriam continues to earn one of the highest pull factor ratings in the state of Kansas.

Insider’s Perspective
While we know it’s helpful to learn how to obtain a garage sale permit from City Hall or where the local schools or grocery stores are located, we also know that consumer habits are driven by other people’s experiences and recommendations. It’s what makes TripAdvisor the industry leader in travel sites. Take a peek at these resident insiders’ perspectives on why they continue to call Merriam HOME! 1. What is your favorite Merriam amenity? Our city’s Public Works Department does a great job of keeping our city beautiful. Also, with all of the shopping venues nearby for groceries, furniture and clothing, you can’t beat Merriam. Plus, you’re only 10 minutes from other great destinations in the Kansas City region. 2. If entertaining out-of-town visitors, what would you include on the itinerary? IKEA, Union Station, Nelson Atkins Museum, some Kansas City brew locations and a professional sporting event if possible. 3. Merriam landed on the “top 100 small towns across America” list recently? Why do you feel we earned this designation? Because of the hometown feel where everyone knows their neighbors, the approachable civic leadership and living on the edge of a big city. 4. What do you wish the future to hold for Merriam residents and visitors 20 years from now? To be a more walkable and bike-friendly community.

1. What is your favorite Merriam amenity? We’ve been in Merriam for over 13 years. Our favorite amenity is the Merriam Marketplace where so many community events take place. 2. If entertaining out-of-town visitors, what would you include on the itinerary? They’d have to visit places that are uniquely “Kansas City” like the National World War Museum and at least one BBQ place per day, but also places that are uniquely “Merriam” like K.C. Strings and Strawberry Hill Povitica. 3. Merriam landed on the “top 100 small towns across America” list recently? Why do you feel we earned this designation? Merriam packs a big punch for residents: an awesome park system, an enviable trail, and tight-knit neighborhoods. It’s also positioned well for visitors: instant transportation options, diverse commercial areas, and one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. 4. What do you wish the future to hold for Merriam residents and visitors 20 years from now? In my magic genie bottle, Merriam visitors would enjoy the biggest/baddest children’s museum in the Midwest (think something like the Smithsonian for kids) while Merriam residents set a new standard for cohesiveness and community in inner-ring suburbs.
Hello! I’m Robbie, a 7-year-old Beagle. I’ve called Great Plains SPCA my temporary home since November 12, 2015. Don’t let my age fool you; I’m still quite the explorer! You see, I went on an adventure and was eventually picked up by a nice Animal Control Officer who could tell I had nowhere else to go. Great Plains SPCA has taken great care of me ever since, giving me medical care, shelter, and lots of love and affection until someone gives me a fur-ever home. I do love it here, but a fur-ever home sure sounds nice! I love the City of Merriam because they are super dog friendly! They have great parks and trails for plenty of canine adventures, and the new doggie disposal stations throughout the parks are über convenient! If someone were to come visit me at Great Plains SPCA, I would love to take a field trip to a nearby Sonic for a doggie ice cream cone–I hear they’re delicious! Speaking of trips and events, the Tail-Waggin’ on the Trail event is right around the corner, and I CANNOT wait! Come meet my friends and me to find your fur-ever friend at Great Plains SPCA!

What do you enjoy most about Merriam? In spring
and summer, I really love the flower baskets that hang on all the light poles. It’s those little touches that make a city feel like home!
2 If entertaining a visitor,
what would be on your regional itinerary? There is so much
to see and do! I am a big fan of farmers’ markets, so we would definitely visit the Merriam Marketplace. Strawberry Hill Povitica is so unique and delicious, so that would be on the agenda, too.
3 What’s your favorite attraction, restaurant,
store or recreational spot in Merriam? There are so many great options on every corner. I think K.C. Strings is a really unique attraction in Merriam, and I would love to tour it. Merriam Public Art Initiative The northwest corner of Johnson and Merriam Drives will soon feature a new and fascinating addition to the downtown Merriam landscape. “Still Time,” represents the first phase in a five-year placemaking initiative to enhance public spaces in downtown Merriam and surrounding areas. The new sculpture resembles a tall, stone tower with a church bell tower like those built on town squares for centuries. A large wind chime inside “Still Time” will ring gently in the breeze like a supersized version of the wind chimes that many Merriam residents enjoy at their homes. “Still Time” was created through a collaborative effort between Architect Dan Maginn of DRAW Architecture+Urban Design, who led the design effort, and construction by Zwei Baume. To produce sounds specific to its Merriam location, Maginn partnered with Dr. Paul Rudy, professor of music composition at UMKC.

I built my glass
blowing studio behind my house between a nice neighborhood and a light industrial area. This location has allowed me to flourish and I know many artists and craftspeople who have chosen Merriam as a good place to live and make their work from their home studios.
2 If entertaining a visitor, what would be on your regional
itinerary? The Leedy Voulkos Art Center, Union Station and The WWI Memorial have always been favorite places for me, along with our park and boulevard system. Shawnee Mission Park in Johnson County and Antioch Park in Merriam are also favorites.
3 What’s your favorite attraction, restaurant, store or recreational spot in
Merriam? Turkey Creek Streamway Trail is the most important amenity to me. The trail has become very popular and leads from behind my place to downtown Merriam which I have loved since I was a kid for its history–especially the old school house.

Top 10 Did You Knows About Merriam Historic Plaza
1 2 3
Merriam Historic Plaza, built in 2006, pays homage to the late 1800s when Merriam Park was the grandest amusement west of the Mississippi. Former President Ulysses S. Grant dedicated Merriam Park in July, 1880. The bear sculpture (Motherhood by Kwan Wu) represents the mama bear and cubs who lived in a den at Merriam Park; rumor claims the superintendent had to coax them back to their den when they would escape and roam the grounds.

Because Merriam is a historic rail town, part of the metal supporting the interpretive signs on the outdoor walking path comes from recycled train track materials. The roof of Merriam Historic Plaza incorporates an on-site rainwater detetion system which reduces water runoff by 50-60 percent. Merriam Historic Plaza offers a meeting room for business functions during regular office hours of the Merriam Visitors Bureau. Seating for up to 50 is available with rates starting at $40 per hour.
7 8
Since opening in 2006, Merriam Historic Plaza has greeted over 5,600 walk-in visitors to its facility. Installed in 2010, Merriam Historic Plaza is the first city building to house solar panels which help reduce the facility’s carbon footprint. To-date, these panels have produced enough energy to power 400 houses for one full day. The Visitors Bureau offices are housed at MHP and although we’ve only been in this location since 2006, we’ve been serving visitors to Merriam since 1996. There’s a geocache on-site at Merriam Historic Plaza called “Maps & Guides & Bears, Oh My!” Can you find it? If you’re a techie treasure hunter, this activity is the perfect seek and find adventure.
