Historic Merriam Moments: Shawnee Friends Mission The early history of this community began between 1826 and 1833 when the Shawnee Indians were moved into the region from their settlements in the more desirable regions of Ohio and Missouri. They established themselves along the banks of the Kansas River and surrounding tributaries, including Turkey Creek in Merriam. Local missionaries worked to convert the Shawnees’ to Christianity. The Quakers (The Society of Friends) had worked hard among the Shawnee in the Ohio Valley, and, as the tribe moved to lands that would become Johnson County, the Quakers followed and built a mission in 1836.

In 1833, a committee of three Quakers visited the Shawnee in preparation for the mission school. They received 320 acres, most of which is within the city limits of present day Merriam. In 1837, Moses Pearson and his wife made the difficult journey by covered wagon to open the school located at what is now 61st and Hemlock St. in Merriam. In 1845, a three-story building was built to accommodate the growing enrollment. The Society of Friends also sought to change the Shawnee by assigning English names to children who attended the school and giving them English-style clothing to wear. The children were clothed and fed completely at the expense of the mission. Although the Quakers forbade the children to speak their

Just east of Merriam along Shawnee Mission Parkway, visitors can stop and enjoy the Shawnee Indian Mission. This site, like many other missions, was established as a
native language, some sources indicate that Shawnee Chief and Methodist Minister Reverend Charles Bluejacket visited the school and read to the children in their native tongue. The Shawnee children lived, worked, and prayed with the Quaker missionary families. They spent six hours per day in the classroom and several hours doing manual labor. The entire community, both Friends and Shawnee, participated in worship, education, Bible study, and meditation together, a style very different from the repetitious method of learning and preaching used at other missions.

School enrollment reached its peak in 1864 with 76 pupils. In its later years, the mission was primarily a school for Shawnee orphans. As the Shawnee gradually left the area, the necessity for a school lessened, and the mission closed in 1870.

Originally built in 1888 to house both black and white students, the school district began segregating students in 1900.

Brown helped organize efforts, which led to the 1954 landmark case Brown v. Board of Education that outlawed segregation in all American public schools.

Making Family Memories in Merriam: A guest editorial by Sierra Redmond
As a military family, we've had the pleasure of living from coast to coast, but no experience is as unique as the heart of the American Midwest. When I think of the Midwest, I think of smaller towns, BBQ to die for, and a family-friendly atmosphere. So, when we had the chance to cross more Midwestern towns off our family travel bucket list, visiting Merriam, Kansas, was a no-brainer for us. Merriam is in the suburbs and a gateway to the Kansas City region. At around a three-hour drive from Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; a two-hour drive from Fort Riley, Kansas; and a 45-minute drive from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, this growing suburb makes the perfect weekend destination for Midwestern-stationed military and families looking to get away.

At first glance, we were pleasantly surprised with the variety of modern offerings tied into such a historical area. Whether you want to shop at IKEA, enjoy a mom and pop dining experience like local favorite Pegah’s, or enjoy an outdoor lifestyle at one of the many trails and outdoor spaces, it’s all here.

Our first stop was the stunning Visitors Bureau. One of the many things that they've done right is hospitality. The Bureau is an attraction within itself. We were welcomed warmly by the amazing staff and invited to stay awhile in the gorgeously manicured public spaces. After a three-hour ride, we were more than happy to take a break and discover the grounds a bit.

Weekends in Merriam are a prime time to visit. There’s no shortage of things to do and see. On the weekend that we visited, we got up close and personal with classic automobiles at the Turkey Creek Car & Motorcycle Show. This was in conjunction with the Saturday Farmers' Market, where we were able to purchase local goods and handmade crafts from local artisans. I was pleased to find families of all ages, from grandparents to toddlers, enjoying the festivities. Merriam makes the perfect destination for a quick generational getaway and much needed bonding time with the grandparents.
The Merriam Historic Plaza and Visitors Bureau features a brief walking path where history and a modern look collide. The outdoor walking path showcases plaques that pay homage to Merriam’s rich history. If you’re a history buff like we are, you may consider downloading the Otocast app for a FREE and easyto-use historical audio tour of the city. There are 12 amazing sites on the app to visit that you don’t want to miss, including Brown Park dedicated in honor of Esther Brown, a civil rights activist who is most notable for desegregation in Merriam and across Kansas. As another option, ask the Visitors Bureau staff about participating in the Sunshine Scavenger Hunt which includes the Visitors Bureau and other locations as stops to discover the city.

I’ve long thought that the best way to fall in love with a city was to stumble off the beaten path and find out what you discover. What makes Merriam most unique is its appreciation for the arts. From the murals to the three public art sculptures, there is art to be discovered and interpreted everywhere. Our weekends are for family time and exploration, so we did just that! End your weekend with a sweet treat at Russell Stover Candy Store. There’s no better way to recap your trip than over ice cream and conversation. If the Midwest and the Kansas City metropolitan area is in your future travels, a stop in Merriam should top your family’s list.

Named a Nextdoor “Neighborhood Favorite” every year since 2017, spending Saturday morning at the market is a summertime staple. With up to 36 vendors each week, easy access from I-35, and plenty of parking, the market is an easy choice for stocking up on the freshest bounty.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE MARKET The market runs the first Saturday in May to the last Saturday in September with vendors ranging from locally grown produce to homemade jams and jellies to handmade fly fishing lures and flies. Toe tapping, live music starting at 10 a.m. each Saturday, plus a variety of kids activities (face painting, planting a take-home flower pot, food fear factor games) on select weekends. EXTRA TREAT You can hop on the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail right across the pedestrian bridge and go for a stroll. There’s also a wonderful sculpture “Planting the Seeds” that is a perfect spot for selfies. MORE EVENTS AT THE MARKETPLACE The Marketplace is also home to several special events such as Flags 4 Freedom, Turkey Creek Car & Motorcycle Show, Merriam Drive Live, and Halloween Happenings.

Waterfall Park
Featured Park: Waterfall Park
is named for its most prominent natural feature within Turkey Creek – a beautiful cascading waterfall. The park offers an observation area, picnic tables and grill, soccer fields, swings, and a playground for the kiddos. An anchor point of the popular Turkey Creek Streamway Trail, walkers and bikers alike can connect to three more Merriam parks by heading south on the trail. Did you know? The soccer fields are named after Julius McFarlin, the first African-American elected to public office in Johnson County. He served from 1973–2000 as Ward 1 Councilmember in Merriam.
Hmmm... The sculpture “Hmmm…,” designed by Colorado artist Joshua Weiner, was created as a playful exploration of place-making and identity. Greeting visitors to Waterfall Park, this nine-foot tall caterpillar stands next to a 12-foot cairn (a stack of granite river boulders) with a butterfly perched on top.

Want a great place to eat? Lisa Feinberg says you must go to Anita’s Cuisine (5816 Merriam Drive) for its El Salvadorian breakfast burrito: “My husband has a sincere love of breakfast burritos. One Saturday morning order was all it took for him to become a regular Saturday customer. All of their food is delicious (not just the chorizo breakfast burritos), and everything they prepare is made with care and served by staff that extends familial warmth and hospitality to their customers.”

Another local favorite is Bilski’s Bar and Grill (5831 Merriam Drive). Julie Mott said the family-owned restaurant feels like coming home. “The food is amazing, home-cooked, and they use produce from their own garden. They are affordable and a staple in our community.”
Gemini store owner Sheila Laureen loves to eat at another El Salvadorian place called El Pulgarcito (5921 Merriam Drive). “The tamales are wrapped in banana leaves that makes them spectacularly moist. The pupusas are awesome and the service is quick and friendly. It’s a fun and clean place to eat in Merriam.”

A Little Gem Nancy Yoakum calls her favorite local store, Gemini, (5807 Merriam Drive) a “little gem.” “Gemini has not only a wonderful assortment of gifts, it’s such a unique store that has beautiful crystals, jewelry, wind chimes, and so much more! She offers classes, and I’ve met some very nice people in the process. My favorite purchase is beautiful angel wind chimes that I have hanging on my back porch.”
Jim Russell says a visit to Merriam Marketplace (5740 Merriam Drive) is a must! “It has an amazing array of events unique to Merriam year-round such as the weekly farmers’ market in summer, the Turkey Creek Car & Motorcycle Show each September, the awe-inspiring Flags 4 Freedom display with more than 1,500 flags and a Fourth of July concert, the beautiful reflecting seeds art sculpture, and Halloween and Christmas events, just to name a few. Best park to visit? Anita Kendall said you need to head to Antioch Park (6501 Antioch Road). “Whether you want to have a picnic, have kids who need to spend some energy, walk a dog, or take a stroll (or run), it's very pretty and just the right size. We've seen several blue herons and other birds, which makes it a nice little gem of nature without having to go far. And, the playground town is the cutest thing ever!” You can see Merriam’s distinctive public art all across the city. “I appreciate all the different public art and sculptures that make our community interesting, unique, and beautiful,” Kendall said. While touring the city, stop by the Merriam Community Center (6040 Slater St.) to see new public art when it opens this summer.
