WELCOME Letter from the Director

As I sit at my desk preparing this letter it is a great time to reflect upon the year’s accomplishments. In Parks and Recreation these areas cover a broad spectrum. Being responsible for various educational / instructional / social events as well as the facility operations and maintenance, every day presents a new challenge to conquer. It is not uncommon for someone, in the middle of an unusual task to comment, “Can’t wait to tell my family what I did at work today!” Over the course of the year, my staff has touched thousands of people’s lives through special events such as the Turkey Creek Festival, Daddy Daughter Princess Ball, Tim Murphy Art Gallery Opening Receptions, Party in Your Park, Turkey Creek Fun Run, Turkey Creek Car and Motorcycle Show, and Brunch with the Bunny just to name a few of over 23 special events in 2014. In addition, we have operated an aquatic center, farmers’ market and community center and coordinated educational / instructional / social and physical programs to improve and enhance citizens’ lives. Through these facilities and programs, we are able to get to know our citizens better and hear about their achievements. Although we typically measure our successes by the number of participants that attend an event, it is the personal achievements that our patrons experience and share that mean the most. A recent

participant in a weekday aerobic class announced that because of his participation he had lost 20 pounds! Another participant has a goal to improve her “chip-time” in the 2015 Turkey Creek Festival fun run. In the youth programs, we have had parents share that because of a particular program they have seen self-confidence blossom in their child. Yes it is fun to sit back during a special event and watch participants and spectators enjoy the day, but for me, the personal stories of how we have been able to improve someone’s life reinforces why my staff and I love our jobs, making it easy to come to work every day. We may not know what the day will have in store when we walk in the front door, but at the end we know we have touched someone’s life! We look forward to doing so again in 2015! In 2002, he began his return to painting, with commissions and studio work on the side. In the summer of 2010, through a continuing education course at the Kansas City Art Institute, Summers discovered the art of painting on site, outdoors, “En Plein Air”. Combining his love for the land, and the arts, Summers has embraced everything about painting outdoors, the art, the land, and the people.
