Jazmin Bustos
Planner, Community Development Department I would start the morning with a delightful cup of Caribou Coffee, perhaps opting for their delicious pumpkin chai. Our day would kick off with a leisurely stroll along the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail. Following our scenic walk, we’d head to the Merriam Farmers’ Market, which takes place on Saturday mornings, to pick up some fresh, locally sourced produce.
Jeremiah Waters
Captain, Merriam Police Department Depending on the time of year, you can find different types of activities and events all across Merriam. My favorites are the Turkey Creek Car & Motorcycle Show in September, and, during the holidays, it’s fun to watch Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive by sleigh to the Merriam Community Center and interact with the kids.
Margo Allen
Recreation Assistant – Programs, Merriam Parks & Recreation Saturdays are for the girls! Let’s start off by grabbing some farm-fresh produce and pastries at the Merriam Farmers’ Market. Then, we’ll head to IKEA for hours of giggles, new kitchen gadgets, and lunch from the IKEA restaurant. Lastly, grab a swimsuit and your favorite book, and let’s pop over to the Merriam Community Center to relax around the outdoor pool – or indoor pool if the weather isn’t cooperating!
Roby Bielak
Foreman, Public Works Department I’d kick off the day at IKEA for some cinnamon buns while we explore the store. Next up, we’d swing by Cinemark for a movie. After that, we’d head to Anita’s Cuisine in downtown Merriam for some Latin American lunch!
Sheila Sheridan
Court Administrator, Merriam Municipal Court Since my life basically revolves around my dog Winchester, I love taking advantage of the many parks to walk with him. HISTORIC MERRIAM
B-24 BOMBER CRASH On July 26, 1944, during the height of World War II, the United States was deeply embroiled in conflict. A military aircraft, a B24 Liberator Bomber, departed from nearby Lincoln, Nebraska, for one final round of routine test flights to Kansas City and back before its impending deployment overseas.
lines in the neighborhood. This unfortunate incident resulted in the loss of three crew members’ lives and injuries to three crew members and three civilians. People on the ground rushed to aid a crew member who had been ejected from the plane while still attached to his flaming seat.
The pilot in command was Second Lieutenant Kenneth Keech. Granted the liberty to select his flight path for this test, he decided to take the bomber over Merriam. He chose to showcase the aircraft to Merriam residents because his wife, Wilma, was staying with her parents in the area.
Astonishingly, the pilot was also ejected but survived, albeit with severe injuries. The impact of the crash extended beyond the immediate casualties, as five homes and many buildings were damaged or destroyed completely with debris scattered over a mile. The body of the plane came to rest between two Merriam homes.
However, during this fateful flight, the aircraft was flying at an alarmingly low altitude, making it incredibly challenging to make necessary corrections due to its immense size and weight. Eyewitnesses recounted that the plane was only slightly above the roofs of houses, and they could see crew members waving from inside. Tragically, the situation took a dire turn when one of the wings clipped a roof on a street below, leading to a catastrophic crash into another home and contact with multiple power

While this historic event transpired some 80 years ago this July, it remains etched in memory through a historical marker established near the crash site at 55th Terrace, on the west side of Antioch Road. Additionally, an artistic representation of this plane crash is immortalized in a mural adorning downtown Merriam. It was created by Michael Young and is on display at the Merriam Community Center.

MERRIAM PLAZA LIBRARY Discover the new Merriam Plaza Library – a welcoming community space that houses more than 65,000 items, inviting areas for meeting, studying, or simply unwinding, and engaging activities for the entire family! Located at 6120 Slater St., Merriam Plaza Library shares a campus and parking with the Merriam Community Center. It replaces the beloved, but aging, Antioch Library facility, which served the community since 1957. Antioch Library permanently closed in January 2024 in order to transfer materials, equipment, and staff to the new branch ahead of Merriam Plaza’s spring 2024 opening. While the closing of Antioch Library is bittersweet for many, the approximately 15,000 square-foot Merriam Plaza branch offers exciting features befitting a 21st century library. The new drive-thru lane offers a convenient way to check out items on hold or return materials; flexible seating spaces both inside and outside the building provide many options for work or play; and, well-equipped meeting and study rooms offer wireless A/V connections. Spacious windows and sculpturelike roof monitors allow an abundance of natural light, and a green roof features more than 7,000 plants, which preserves the roof’s lifespan and helps with HVAC efficiency while providing a place for pollinators and native vegetation. Like many Johnson County building projects, 1% of the overall project budget was allocated for public art, which includes exterior metal sculptures by artist Sage Vaughn and a fourwall interior mural by Kansas City artist Emily Alvarez. The anticipated total project cost is $13.68 million, funded by the Library's mill levy as part of the Comprehensive Library Master Plan. Merriam Plaza Library is also Johnson County Government’s first all-electric building and is anticipated to receive LEED Silver certification. The Library’s YouTube channel offers behindthe-scenes looks of the entire building project, which began in January 2022. Monthly time-lapse videos show the project from start to finish, and the “How to Build a Library” episodes highlight project milestones.

FOR THE L VE OF LITTLE LIBRARIES Public libraries have long been regarded as treasure troves of knowledge, offering a vast array of books and resources to foster reading, learning, and community interaction. However, in recent years, a new phenomenon is taking shape across neighborhoods and communities around the world. Little libraries have begun to sprout up on street corners, in front yards, and outside businesses. These miniature repositories of books enhance the availability of literary riches within a community. The concept of Little Libraries, also known as Free Little Libraries or Little Free Libraries, was born out of a desire to promote literacy and community engagement. The idea is simple yet powerful: Take a small, weather-resistant box, stock it with books, and place it in a public space where anyone can take a book to read or leave a book for others to enjoy. The movement began in 2009 when Todd H. Bol, inspired by the spirit of generosity, built the first Little Library in Hudson, Wisconsin. Today, there are over 150,000 registered Little Libraries in more than 120 countries worldwide. Neighborhoods wholeheartedly embraced the Little Library movement, and residents recognized the potential for these mini-libraries to bring people together and promote a love for reading. Soon, these charming little structures started sprouting in front yards across the city. This initiative not only encourages book sharing but also invites community members to become stewards of these tiny treasures.

They’re symbols of a commitment to literacy, community, and the joy of reading. These tiny treasures have brought neighbors closer together, enriched lives with literature, and transformed everyday spaces into hubs of connection and culture. The city’s residents continue to nurture these small but significant symbols, reminding us all that the simple act of sharing a book can have a profound impact on a community’s spirit.
