Klaus Wellmann, CEO Messe Friedrichshafen
Big anniversary: The 25th AERO
We don’t believe everything is about having great technology. We don’t just rely on having the youngest fleet of aircraft in Europe, or the most comfortable departure lounges. Or even offering digital services that make travelling so much easier. We rely on our people. It is our people who make the time you spend flying between A and B so much more than that. Because we really want you to leave our aircraft the same way you got on: with a smile.

Klaus Wellmann
CLOSEUP INTERVIEW
CEO Messe Friedrichshafen GmbH
11 YEARS – 11 QUESTIONS CLOSEUP
1
Mr. Wellmann, you have been running the company now for eleven years. As a former citizen of Cologne, does the number eleven have a special significance for you? Klaus Wellmann: Yes, you could say that. One encounters the number eleven in Cologne in so many different ways – be it 4711 eau de cologne, or the start of the carnival season on 11.11. at 11:11 a.m. Instead of a 50th birthday, Cologne natives like to celebrate their 55th to bring the number eleven into play. That is why I am also particularly happy to be celebrating my eleventh anniversary with Messe Friedrichshafen.
2
You moved to Friedrichshafen from Cologne eleven years ago – which place do you now think of as home? Klaus Wellmann: For me, home means mountains – that has always been the case and it was defining for me from an early age.
But for me and my family, the Lake Constance region is home. This is where our children were born as well, and we feel completely at home.
3
Before you came to Messe Frie drichshafen, you already knew that you wanted to live in the Lake Constance re gion. How did you arrive at this decision? Klaus Wellmann: I was looking for a combination of mountains and water, but also wanted to live and work in a thriving economic region. In my opinion, the Lake Constance region with both global businesses and fantastic recreational options is a fabulous all-round package.
WE ZOOM IN
6
9
Marking Klaus Wellmann’s eleventh anniversary as CEO of Messe Fried richshafen GmbH we ask him eleven questions.
Klaus Wellmann: With over 20 trade fairs a year, we obviously cover a wide diversity of themes and that means plenty of variety. Something else I greatly enjoy is that I am involved in the short-term and long-term strategies for every event, and I can be in direct touch with our clients during ongoing trade fair operations. Ultimately, trade fair business is a sales business and it is only in this way that we can find out how the individual industries work, and successfully mirror them as partners
Klaus Wellmann: I most enjoy spending my free time with my family, hiking, cycling or skiing in the mountains.
4
Since you started in 2006, what were your biggest challenges and suc cesses? Klaus Wellmann: I would see the ongoing development of the regional infrastructure with our partners as an ongoing challenge which has always been and remains very important to me. The same goes for strengthening Friedrichshafen as a location: we want our trade fair city to be recognised as a leading and right location for the respective industries not only in Germany but also in Europe and worldwide. Of course, we must always ensure that we meet the high expectations of our clients..
When we achieve this and I talk to our satisfied clients after a successful trade fair, these are precisely the great results that get me motivated again to tackle the next challenges.
5
What part of your work do you enjoy the most?
You have a demanding job – what’s the best way for switching off?
That’s the great thing about the Lake Constance region – you can be in Switzerland, Austria or Liechtenstein in just 45 minutes or be climbing mountains in nearby Allgäu – or exploring them on a mountain bike.
7
As the years have passed, have you become particularly attached to any of the trade fairs? Klaus Wellmann: Because of my hobbies, I naturally have a special private connection with the products at the OutDoor and EUROBIKE. Unfortunately, while the fairs are on, I never have the chance to look at the latest bicycles and outdoor items because I’m usually talking to our clients. Apart from that, every trade fair has its particular charms: the TUNING WORLD BODENSEE, for example, which is strongly oriented to young people, is very good for our region, and AERO, as the world’s leading fair for general aviation, is also a very attractive event in logistical terms.
In your opinion, what are the most important qualities for the CEO of a trade fair centre to be successful?
8
Klaus Wellmann: I have the good fortune to be working here with excellent colleagues and I see it as my duty to bring together the individual activities of the management team so that each person can play fully to his strengths.
Klaus Wellmann: There aren’t very many places but I’ve never been on the crest of the roof of the Rothaus Hall A1. One of my favourite spots is, however, the atrium with its water garden.
Is there anywhere in the exhibi tion centre that you have never been?
10
What awaits the father Klaus Wellmann when he gets home in the evening? Klaus Wellmann: If I get home in time, our two wild boys are waiting for me. Then I still get to put them to bed before I do this or that for the Messe in peace and quiet.
11
What do you wish for your next eleven years as CEO of Messe Friedrichs hafen? Klaus Wellmann: I would like to continue working with the same people for many years to come, and continue to strengthen Friedrichshafen as a trade fair location, together with my colleagues.

LAKE CONSTANCE AN ECONOMIC POWER
Lengthy tradition of innovation When he built his airship in 1908, Graf von Zeppelin laid the cornerstone for Friedrichshafen’s industrial development. Aircraft developer Claude Dornier and mechanical engineer Karl Maybach were also able to benefit from this new industry, and settled in the region as well to share in the success of the Zeppelin airships with their metal structures and engines. This gave rise to global corporations such as ZF Friedrichshafen AG, MTU (RollsRoyce Power Sys¬tems AG) or the ZEPPELIN Group. © Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei GmbH
8
Precision work at the automotive supplier ZF Friedrichshafen AG
The region is defined not only by the aviation industry but also by automotive, machine engineering and electronics. Today’s ZF Group which has its head office in Friedrichshafen meanwhile has turno ver in excess of 35 billion and, with 136,800 employees – 14,500 of whom are engaged in research and develop ment – is one of the world’s biggest automotive suppliers. Neighbouring Austria, Switzerland and the Duchy of Liechtenstein however also play a major part in the overall high rate of em ployment with 2.2 million people in work and one of Europe’s lowest un employment rates – 3.4 per cent – as well as an above-average gross domes tic product of around 106 billion euros – more than 46,000 euros per inhabit ant. The potential and resources of no fewer than four highly developed countries come together in this dynamic economic region with international appeal.
Global players and hidden champions such as LIEBHERR, HILTI, Doppelmayr, DIEL Aerospace or WÜRTH – to name just a few – and highly specialised medium-sized companies such as the EUROBIKE exhibitor CarbonSports GmbH are as much at home here as are science and research. In addi tion, the region enjoys great economic and innovative strength with an index value of 51.4, putting the Lake Con stance region in fourth place in Baden-Württemberg. For students too, the Lake Constance region is an attractive place to study: The Alliance of International Lake Constance Universities numbers 29 third-level institutions of which the private Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen and the Dual University Ravensburg/Friedrichshafen alone have over 2,500 students enrolled on technical courses.
In short, Lake Constance is not only a heavenly holiday destination but also a highly developed economic region with strong industry. A combination that makes living and working here so unique!

Veloring Friedrichshafen: a heart for cyclists As home to the cycling fair EUROBIKE, the city of Friedrichshafen has already had a heart for cyclists for over 25 years. Now cycling in Friedrichshafen will be giving residents and tourists even more pleasure, and cycling as a mode of transport will be promoted thanks to faster cycle path connections. The idea: a seven-kilometre “Veloring” that will span the city centre with a semi-circle of six-metre-wide cycle paths. The starter’s shot for the nine-million-eu ro project was fired at the beginning of March 2017. Work started immediately on the first of five sections which was already completed at the end of June 2017.

Cyclists will have to be patient until the Veloring is fully operational but from February 2019 they’ll be able to freewheel through Friedrichshafen!

Cooling system for the exhibition halls Messe Friedrichshafen has invested 5.2 million euros in an optimised cooling system for the exhibition halls In the event of future heatwaves, the Messe has taken some cool counter-measures: Once the outside temperature starts rising again, at least visitors can be sure of a relaxed working atmosphere indoors. The existing cooling system in the exhibition halls has been technically opti-
WiFi: free in the exhibition grounds Thanks to state-of-the art WiFi technology, exhibitors, visitors and media representatives can directly communicate the latest trends online, right on site. In 2014 a wide-range WiFi system was installed with 104 extremely effective access points in the outdoor areas, foyers, conference centres and all halls. Record usage was recorded at the EUROBIKE 2016 when some 10,000 users were all online at the same time.

Contract renewal for Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus Wellmann ”We wish to continue Messe Frie drichshafen’s successful trajectory to gether.“ This is the stated aim of Andreas Brand, Mayor of the City of Friedrichshafen and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Messe Friedrichshafen. That is the reason why the Messe’s contract with CEO Klaus Wellmann (53) who has been responsible for Messe business in Friedrichshafen for eleven years, has now been renewed early and for an indefinite period. Because the working relationship during this time has been “exceptionally target and results-oriented” on behalf of the Messe Supervisory Board Andreas Brand has sent out “a clear signal of continuity”. MESSE FOCUS
AERO Project Manager Roland Bosch and Messe CEO Klaus Wellmann are pleased with the success of the 25th aviation exhibition.
AERO 2017 THE BEST EVER!
The 25th anniversary edition of the international aviation exhibition breaks all records Flying connects not only individual people and cities but also an entire industry, as was very evident in April at the anniversary edition of AERO. With record attendance – 707 exhibitors and an unprecedented 34,200 trade visi tors – the international aviation exhibition was a hotspot for pilots from all over the world. In its function as a trend barometer and industry compass, the AERO showed premieres, new products and trends in general aviation, thus further cementing its reputation as an innovation driver.
History meets future It wasn’t only exhibitors, visitors and organisers who were floating on cloud nine during the four days of the exhibition but also the jubilee airshow pilots, who were able to take off in the very best 24
flying conditions. Just once, and only for the 25th edition, modern e-aircraft, stunt planes and the historic Klemm 25 all took to the skies together under the motto of History meets future.
“GARMIN chalked up an enormous success at the 2017 show. Our stand was very well-attended on all four days.” Trevor Pegrum, Sales & Marketing Manager GARMIN

40 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE 900 GUESTS
The Gala Evening was held in the Zeppelin NT hangar, one of the biggest self-supporting halls in southern Germany. Dining directly beside one of the zeppelins was a unique experience for the guests. Dieter Morszeck, CEO RIMOWA FLUGZEUGWERKE AG with around-the-world pilot Amelia Rose Earhart
On the Saturday evening of the show, 900 invited VIPs and exhibitors celebrated the big birthday party for the 25th AERO at the Zep pelin Werft, surrounded by the history of aviation.
The evening was hosted by pilot Amelia Rose Earhart, who successfully flew around the world in a single-engine PC-12 in 2014. With the kind support of RIMOWA and JEPPESEN the international guests enjoyed a stylish party with artistic aerial acro batic acts at dizzying heights, historical reviews, formal speeches and a firstclass buffet – all in the breathtaking setting of the Zeppelin Werft. This was the perfect venue in Friedrichshafen for guests to celebrate themselves and the aviation in-
dustry in general, given that, a good 40 years ago everything started here from very small and modest beginnings with only 14 exhibitors and pilot equipment, as a part of the then “Racing, Motor, Leisure” show. The subsequent years brought constant expansion and AERO became a stand-alone exhibition in 1993. Today it is the world’s leading B2B trade fair for general aviation – a success story Made by Messe Friedrichs hafen!

MESSE FOCUS
NEW NAME, NEW PARTNER From 2018 the KLASSIKWELT BODENSEE classic car show will be known as the MOTORWORLD Classics Bodensee, thus promoting the mobility experience even more Different name, same passion Among the classic car shows in Germany, the KLASSIKWELT BODENSEE is famed for its particular charm and great event character. Even Friedrichshafen, where it is staged, is steeped like nowhere else in the history of mobility – in the air, on land and on water. A new partnership has now been put in place with the aim of further expanding the successful concept: in 2018 Messe Friedrichshafen GmbH and the MOTORWORLD Group will be staging the exhibition together for the first time in 2018.
The next chapter of the successful classic car story will be the MOTORWORLD Classics Bodensee. Klaus Wellmann, CEO of Messe Friedrichshafen GmbH (l.) and Andreas Dünkel, Chairman of the MOTORWORLD Group.
Attractive added value for exhibitors Mobility experience and style of the good old days The new partners wanted to further expand the mobility experience. The MOTORWORLD Classics Bodensee’s additional event offers will leverage further potential in terms of targeting the public. The organisers want to immerse them in a fascinating world that takes in every means of mobility. Classic vehicles of all kinds will remain central, and there will be even more highlights of the classic and modern classic scene, a fascinating programme, and the now traditional racing and air shows. In addition, as already in place at the sister fair, MOTORWORLD Classics Berlin, the theme of lifestyle will be writ large at the adventure show at Lake Constance. Exhibitors and visitors alike will be encouraged to become part of this world of classic mobility in terms of matching look and feel.
For the exhibitors too, the increased focus on mobility as an experience at the MOTORWORLD Classics Bodensee will provide additional incentives. Beyond the trade and insider public, new target groups can be addressed, customers acquired for the first-time purchase of a classic or modern classic vehicle or of the necessary parts and accessories. In addition, the arc of suspense between the MOTORWORLD Classics shows in Berlin and Lake Constance and between the entire MOTORWORLD Group opens up attractive added value for the exhibitors. Whether lessees of the locations or other partners of the group, there are diverse synergies and they open up new opportunities to make valuable business contacts through the network and infrastructure of the MOTORWORLD Group and to be visible to customers, and thus a real part of the scene. MOTORWORLD Classics Bodensee will take place from 25 – 27 May 2018. CLOSEUP 27
Belle Époque night Should one stop at the most beautiful point? Certainly not!
This year KLASSIKWELT BODENSEE extended the most beautiful part of the day and hosted an exclusive evening on board the Lake Constance ship, the “Sonnenkönigin” (Sun Queen). On a sunny May Saturday during the KLASSIKWELT BODENSEE classic car show, some 500 guests were greeted with the words “welcome to the fa bulous glittering world of the 1920s”. Dressed in the style of the Roaring Twenties, after embarking, lovers of the past enjoyed a welcome drink beneath a blue sky at the open-air bar on deck. This was followed by a first-class gala dinner, accompanied by the outstanding live band, the “Sazerac Swingers”, and an artistic burlesque show, while the “Sonnenkönigin” made her way from Friedrichshafen to Meersburg. Once back in Austrian waters, the DJ urged guests to make a musical leap forward to the ‘50s and ‘60s. The dancing, partying and immersion in the glamour of days gone by went on until well after midnight – what a night!

CAN SWEETNESS LIKE THIS BE A SIN? Love is sweet! Cake lovers will be thrilled by the new fair for cake design and creative baking On 3 and 4 February 2018, Messe Friedrichshafen will be whipping its own event out of the oven: my cake will introduce the trendy themes of creative baking and decorating to the four-nation region. For our successful recipe we’re mixing a pound of shopping pleasure with a good handful of workshops and demonstrations, seasoned to taste by well known cake artists. And the cherry on the cake of this event? A creative cake baking competition!
See the stars of the baking scene live From cakes to baking ingredients and decoration to course offers, the new event’s spectrum leaves no wish unfulfilled. SOCIAL MEDIA Communication is everything!
In an age of digitalisation, Messe Frie drichshafen is increasingly engaging with social media communication and partnering with bloggers. The two major recreation fairs OutDoor and EUROBIKE in particular, are active on all of the important channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Xing and LinkedIn. In recent months this has contributed both to positive image-building and to a growth of the online community. All services relating to social media work are handled in-house by the Messe Friedrichshafen’s Communications Department. Mirjam Reisch, the Coordinator Online Communication, knows exactly how relevant these “new” media are: “For us as a trade fair company, social media communication opens up new opportunities and ways of networking with our customers and communicating with them all year round.” In addition, all Twitter, Facebook and Instagram posts by visitors that are linked with the hashtag are displayed during the fairs on outsize screens known as Social Walls in the very busy East Foyer for all to see. But 32
it isn’t only the visitors who post live from the fair: Apart from trade journalists and the dailies, influential outdoor and cycling bloggers have meanwhile also joined the ranks of accredited me dia representatives at the leading fairs. In this way, publicity can be gained on the social media channels in addition to general media reporting. There are obvious advantages for bloggers and the respective industries too because more and more companies are now working at marketing level with bloggers in order to present their products to their target group directly and authentically.

The trade fair offers both sides the perfect opportunity to talk to each other and discuss potential cooperation. Digital influencers also have the chance to work in peace and network with like-minded bloggers at Blogger Bases which have been specially set up. In addition, special side programme items such as guided tours, lectures or blogger breakfasts are organised. One of the highlights of the OutDoor Blogger Base this year was the British adventurer and blogger Alastair Humphreys, who gave a keynote speech about his work, inspiring and enthusing his international blogger colleagues and others as well.

PORTRAIT OF THE TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT
SECRET HEROES In order to offer our exhibitors the best possible support, the Messe Friedrichs hafen’s Technical Department, headed by our Division Manager Stefan Keller, stands on three solid pillars: Logistics & Service (Head: Gebhard Witt), Construction & Maintenance (Head: Roman Bodenmüller) and Technical Event Set-up (Head: Matthias Kohler).
MATTHIAS KOHLER Head of Technical Event Set-up
In the latest issue of CLOSEUP we would like to introduce you to our Event Technology team – because without them, fair preparation doesn’t happen. MARIO LAUBENBERGER Coordinator Technical Event Set-up
To start off with, it’s all still relati vely easy.
BERND ‘THEO‘ HOFFMANN Coordinator Technical Event Set-up, deputy Head of Technical Event Set-up
Before the trade fair planning really ramps up for the Technical Department, Messe Friedrichshafen’s event engineers are busy with sketches, drawings and technical lists. Their job is to implement the exhibitors’ wishes and plans as a service provider and service partner, and to coordinate the external trades so that afterwards everything is where it should be.
“We make things possible that appear unachievable at first glance,” is how it’s summed by Matthias Kohler, Head of Technical Event Set-up who, together with his colleagues Theo Hoffmann and Mario Laubenberger is responsible for all event technology at Messe Friedrichshafen. Each of them is assigned to different fairs and they are familiar with the challenges presented by the various industries. “For AERO, we worked with the air port to move over 300 aircraft that had to be in place punctually in time for the start of the fair. Naturally, ex hibitors and visitors should never real ise that the weather sometimes causes us real problems here,” says Theo Hoff mann, talking about his experiences at this year’s 25th AERO. 34
286
calls a day – techs, we have a problem!
But it isn’t only the aircraft and special exhibitor wishes that present the team with real challenges each time: “This year we also had the AERO anniversary cele bration with 900 guests at the Zeppe lin Werft. I was the main contact there for artist, in-house technicians and ex ternal service providers.” A truly mammoth project alongside normal trade fair business – it takes strong nerves, particularly when on the day before the show starts, one’s mobile rings exactly 286 times, each call bringing a new problem. The in-house tradespeople often step in at this point as they are on site and can provide fast, straightforward help with regard to electrics, floor coverings, water pipes, painting work or carpentry.
Nothing works without them – The Technical Event Set-up Department pulls the strings behind the scenes
Lockheed P-38 stunt plane had to be brought here, for instance, for the airshow. The technical team however also provided extensive customer care to the many small, semi-professional exhibitors who presented their products in the parts or traders’ hall.
We’re the fire brigade! We turn up to put out fires! The bigger the trade fairs the more professional the exhibitors. “At some small trade fairs for which we also handle stand and scenery construction, we sometimes have to hold inexperi enced exhibitors’ hands a little so that everything works out right,” says Mario Laubenberger, Coordinator Technical Event Set-up. But then again, that is precisely what makes service at Messe Friedrichshafen so good:
Solution-oriented, creative and committed, the technical team push out the limits of what’s possible. Every trade fair has its own charm and its own challenges, and that also goes for the KLASSIKWELT BODENSEE which celebrated its 10th anniversary at the exhibition centre from 19–21 May. The Flying Bulls’
Making sure that everything not only runs smoothly, but looks good too, can be a challenge to the creativity of the event engineers. For example, for the OutDoor Trade Fair in June, Matthias Kohler, Head of Technical Event Set-up, came up with some very special highlights: “We turned huge wooden cable drums leftover from upgrading our air conditioning system into urban seating and a bar in the new “Lifestyle Collection” trend area. And we rustled up a rustic campfire space for the “HangOut Area”, to emphasise the feel-good atmosphere outdoors.” There are many great ideas – after all, the team looks after many trade fairs each year, and knows best what materials they have and what projects they have already implemented. That allows them to not only create trade fair structures that are unique, they are sustainable too.
Once everything is up and running and everyone is satisfied after the final inspection, the guys from the Technical Event Set-up Department can finally pause for breath.
Until the next
trade fair ...
