Mayor Andreas Brand

Messe Friedrichshafen is ”Closer to Clients”

AUSBLICKE

Just boarded my comfort zone. More than just a good flight

We don’t believe everything is about having great technology. We don’t just rely on having the youngest fleet of aircraft in Europe, or the most comfortable departure lounges. Or even offering digital services that make travelling so much easier. We rely on our people. It is our people who make the time you spend flying between A and B so much more than that. Because we really want you to leave our aircraft the same way you got on: with a smile.

UP CLOSE TO MESSE FRIEDRICHSHAFEN. The information age has proven to be a mixed blessing. Whereas communication in todays society is faster than it has ever been, the information we can access is, at best, a snapshot of the full picture, not even sharp enough at times to bring out all the details. Our new customer magazine CLOSE UP is different. It aims to give you the full story, in minute detail. CLOSE UP is a term borrowed from photography and provides a fascinating way of seeing things from a totally new viewpoint, a different angle. It means, we will share insider knowledge that will give you a clear view of Messe Friedrichshafen.

”We will take you behind the scenes of our exhibition centre and keep you up to date on what’s happening in our fascinating city.”

practical and pragmatic solutions that will help you get where you want to be – fast. With this in mind, we hope you will enjoy reading our first issue of CLOSE UP and discover many new and inspiring sides to trade fairs ”made in Friedrichshafen”.

CLOSE UP INTERVIEW MAYOR ANDREAS BRAND In Andreas Brand’s opinion, what is it that makes the city attractive? How would he describe its positioning? What does Friedrichshafen’s future look like in his view? And what exhibition does he most like to visit on a private basis? We asked him all these questions.

Situated on the shores of Lake Constance, Friedrichshafen is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in the world. As a popular tourist destination, the small lakeside town is no less a hot spot on the German trade show scene. What makes Friedrichshafen a top venue? Why are the companies here doing so well and what is it about the atmosphere in this area that makes it so pleasantly different?

We put a face to exhibitions! Messe Friedrichshafen stands apart from its competitors with a uniquely customer-focused culture. We listen to our clients and believe in working together to find concepts and solutions that are a perfect fit. This is the message at the heart of our new advertising campaign ‘Closer to Clients’. In a world of impersonal interaction and faceless service, we value personal contact, where senior managers with their established team of experts engage with business partners face-to-face, offering a friendly and attentive service tailored to their individual requirements. Ensuring

continuity in the project teams enables our staff to build and strengthen solid relationships of trust that are second to none in the exhibition landscape. More than that, our in-house consultants act as the interface between the customer and our various internal subsections for exceptionally quick and easy communication. One meeting or phone call is all it takes for our project teams to pull out all the stops until all questions are answered and every problem is solved – straightforward, no-nonsense, professional service without the red tape.

CITY TALK

NEW IN TOWN A QUESTION OF PERSPECTIVE Extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner jumps out of the Zeppelin Just about everyone who saw Felix Baumgartner’s stratospheric leap from an altitude of 39 kilometres back in 2012 was breathtaken. Four years later the one-time world record holder is taking things down a gear and, even though a jump from a Zeppelin can’t be compared with leaping from a space capsule, Felix Baumgartner didn’t want to miss this unique opportunity to ”jump for joy”. On 16 October 2016, at the invitation of the Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei (DZR), the 47-year-old Austrian and 15 other parachutists jumped from the Zeppelin NT which had taken to the air above its hangar and with a view of the Friedrichshafen exhibition centre. DZR is expected to give those who would like to make the Zeppelin jump themselves the chance to do so in June and September 2017. www.zeppelin-nt.de

BON VOYAGE! Travel with ease to Friedrichshafen with the new Flixbus links Many roads lead to Friedrichshafen, the exhibition city at Lake Constance. The successful exhibitions and conferences are definitely worth a visit whether one arrives by plane, car, rail or long-distance bus. Long-distance bus operator ”Flixbus” has expanded its route network in recent months and Friedrichshafen is benefiting too because Flixbus now covers not only Munich, Zurich and Freiburg on its South Germany schedule, but also Nuremberg, Tübingen, Ulm and Heidelberg. Furthermore, buses depart from Hamburg, Berlin and many other places throughout Germany. It’s a great addition to the ways of getting to Messe Friedrichshafen because travelling by long-distance bus saves you money and gets you to your destination comfortably and without stress. www.flixbus.com

ZF-FORUM The ZF Forum in Friedrichshafen creates both indoor and outdoor highlights With turnover in excess of 29 billion euros and 138,800 employees, ZF Friedrichshafen AG is one of the world’s biggest automotive suppliers. Designed in a complex, geometrical style, ZF Friedrichshafen AG’s new head office at Löwentaler Strasse in Friedrichshafen was officially inaugurated on 22 November 2016. After around three years of construction, a good 650 employees have now moved into their new offices. But instead of settling down at personal workspaces, the employees here share their desks. Desk sharing is part of the office concept 3.0 with which the ZF Forum is adapting to today’s digital and mobile working world. Employees here are able to harmonise their surroundings and activities, and can choose from one of the quiet rooms, the library or numerous meeting spaces. Apart from the office design, the head office at Lake Constance has a number of other innovative features such as a 3,000-square-metre exhibition space that presents the company’s history and its current CSR activities using the very latest media techniques. And thought has been given to future employees as well: both a branch of the Wissenswerkstatt Friedrichshafen (Knowledge Workshop) and the Schülerforschungzentrum Südwürttemberg – an institution dedicated to improving learning and promoting school children – have also been integrated into the 90-million-euro project in the centre of Friedrichshafen. Bring on the future! www.zf.com

AIRPORT NEWS www.lufthansa.com

Frankfurt

Lufthansa serves Friedrichshafen Airport with four daily flights from Frankfurt. This means that exhibitions visitors can travel with ease via this hub to Lake Constance from all over Europe and the rest of the world.

To bridge the distances for our clients and business partners, for large trade fairs such as OutDoor and EUROBIKE we are also able to adapt our flight capacities to meet the demand of international exhibition visitors. As such, apart from the Canadair CRJ900 which is usually in use, aircraft such as the Boeing 737, Airbus A319 or similar may also be deployed.

www.bodensee-airport.eu

With Lufthansa as our strategic partner we are also able to offer exhibitors, trade visitors and media representatives special rates on their flights to OutDoor or EUROBIKE. By entering a booking code which is shown on the respective Messe website under ”Travel”, you can save 10–15 % on your flight, depending on which class you have booked.

the planes make their stopover in Friedrichshafen, departing or arriving passengers are welcomed or seen off by the onboard crew. The new connection between Friedrichshafen and Vienna has been operating on the same principle since December: there are daily flights to Vienna in the morning from Monday to Friday with return flights to Lake Constance in the afternoon.

MESSE FOCUS POWER-SAVING WINS AWARD:

Messe Friedrichshafen wins the German E-Planner Award 2016

CYCLING TO WORK As of now exhibition centre employees can lease work bicycles cheaply Messe Friedrichshafen employees have cycling in their blood – not least because of the annual EUROBIKE show. Yellow service bikes are already being used at the Messe grounds to shorten the sometimes quite substantial distances between the exhibition halls, and employees also have the use of e-bikes for official travel in the local area.

Messe Friedrichshafen was already awarded a ”Good Practice Label” in 2014. L. to r.: Steffen Joest, deputy Head of Division Energy Systems and Energy Services Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena) Berlin; Christian Raidler, Maintenance, Energy Management; Stefan Keller, Head of Technical Department, Logistics & Service, member of the Board of Directors

When exhibition business is in full swing at Friedrichshafen, the electricity meter is spinning at top speed too When exhibition business is in full swing at Friedrichshafen, the electricity meter is spinning at top speed too. In order to save electricity, Messe technician Christian Raidler has taken any number of measures in recent years: the resulting annual average electricity savings of eight per cent have been warmly welcomed – and not only in-house. In 2014 Messe Friedrichshafen was awarded its first ”Good Practice Label” by the German Energy Agency for its energy efficient operations. At the time, the key reason for being awarded the label was that the low-voltage main distributor had been connected to a monitoring system, enabling verifiable data about actual power requirements and, consequently, the reactivation of the 400-V-ring. To enhance this measure and achieve acceptable end-energy savings, elements of the technical building systems that were inefficient were 20

localised and removed, and some of the outdoor lighting was replaced with LED spotlights. This year Messe Friedrichshafen was celebrating its success, winning the German E-Planner Awards 2016 in the category of Building Automation/Cross-Trade System Integration with its KNX Visualisation project. The aim of this project was to implement an exploratory human-machine interface on the basis of the Shneiderman Rules. In addition, Raidler succeeded in swapping out several logic functions and integrating relevant consumers into Messe Friedrichshafen’s energy management software (EnergyWeb). Sponsored by trade journal ep Elektro-praktiker, the award was presented on 11 October 2016 and recognises the best planning achievements.

Those who have to commute to work at Messe Friedrichshafen can also opt for an e-bike in lieu of a bonus, so that they avoid traffic and keep fit at the same time. Employees can lease the bicycle of their choice and the monthly fee that is deducted from their gross salary earns them real tax benefits. The scheme has met with great interest and at latest by next spring, lots of employees will be zipping past the peak time traffic jams on their bikes.

New Expo Cabin with real mountain flair

The new Expo Cabin on the west side of the exhibition grounds will be opening its doors on 5 April 2017, just as the world’s leading trade show for general aviation, AERO, is set to embark on its 25th anniversary flight. Replacing the popular catering tent, the 20 m long and 12.5 m wide log cabin will be tantalising visitors’ taste buds with Swabian and Bavarian specialities in an authentic setting. Be it half a roast chicken or the region’s famous ‘Allgäuer Kässpätzle’ (traditional Swabian egg pasta with cheese and roasted onions), ‘Leberkäse’ (meatloaf with a very fine texture), potato salad, a hearty pork knuckle, or perhaps a plate of tasty Reichenau salad – the culinary selection dished up by exhibition caterer KlinkEberhardt promises to be a foodie feast worthy of a chalet shindig. Inside, the heated Expo Cabin offers a typical beer tent atmosphere with solid wood seating for some 150 people, perfectly comple-

mented by rustic decorations with wooden ladders, wagon wheels, milk churns, etc. The glass frontage together with an intelligent lighting concept provide good visibility, as guests help themselves at the bar. An additional outdoor counter keeps trips to the two beer gardens short to ensure that food is still hot when served outside. Two wooden patios (180 sqm each) are designed to line the sides of the Expo Cabin and will accommodate a further 576 guests. The Expo Cabin will be open during the trade fair hours and may be booked for exhibitor parties or corporate events. For enquiries and bookings contact the exhibition caterer Klink-Eberhard directly. LAKE CONSTANCE REGION

WELCOME TO PARADISE. Once you’ve fallen for Lake Constance’s charms, you won’t want to leave. That’s exactly what happened to many of Messe Friedrichshafen’s employees who have fallen in love with the region – either recently or some years ago already.

Once you’ve fallen for Lake Constance’s charms, you won’t want to leave. That’s exactly what happened to many of Messe Friedrichshafen’s employees who have fallen in love with the region – either recently or some years ago already. Hardly surprising given that when the weather is warm there are countless ways on land and on water of savouring the time after work until sunset. Whether swimming, sailing, stand-up paddling, cycling, hiking, golf or simply sitting around on the lakeshore and doing nothing – summer at Lake Constance is incomparable. But the region also attracts plenty of visitors in winter thanks to its proximity to the most beautiful ski resorts in Switzerland and Austria, its magical Christmas markets, and the Swabian version of Carnival, Fasnet. Every year more than four million holidaymakers flock to Lake Constance, taking advantage of the good infrastructure and large selection of hotels – both of which are also of benefit to Messe Friedrichshafen’s clients and guests. The Messe’s business partners equally appreciate the many options that Lake Constance offers them once the exhibition is over for the day. Because no matter whether it’s a business dinner overlooking the lake or an unfor22

gettable client incentive trip on board a ship, against this breathtaking backdrop every side event is transformed into a truly special experience. Lake Constance is rightly considered to be one of Europe’s cultural gems. Centuries-old, perfectly preserved towns offer fascinating tours of discovery. The three islands of Mainau, Reichenau and Lindau also have a lot to offer: the Lindau harbour entrance, adorned with the Bavarian lion, is world-

famous. The entire Altstadt (old town), which accounts for almost 80 per cent of the island, is listed, so visitors have the chance to see a magnificent medieval town. The ”flower island” of Mainau, on the other hand, offers a unique landscape of parks and flowers. The island is ornamented with around 30,000 rose bushes which bear over 1,200 species of rose, as well as exotic pot plants and the popular Butterfly House. Reichenau, the largest of the three islands, is

famous throughout Germany for the and forward-looking city is further enhanced vegetables grown there. Whether tomatoes, thanks to the easy access provided by cucumbers or salad – Lake Constance is on Bodensee Airport. There is also another side everybody’s lips. CLOSEUP INTERVIEW

Andreas Brand Mayor of the City of Friedrichshafen Chairman of the Messe Friedrichshafen Supervisory Board

”… a high quality of life.” CLOSEUP The Mayor of Friedrichshafen is also Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Messe Friedrichshafen and sits on the boards of several other companies – how did that come about? Andreas Brand: Well, firstly, if you look at public utilities up and down the country, it’s not uncommon for the mayor and city chiefs to chair the Supervisory Boards of public enterprises. That said, it’s a fair question given that Friedrichshafen has various other organisations, besides the usual Supervisory Boards, in which the city is heavily invested. As well as Messe, there is the 26

Zeppelin Foundation, which owns a majority stake in ZF Friedrichshafen AG, Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH and Zeppelin GmbH. Since the Zeppelin Foundation is administered by the City of Friedrichshafen, the city as its shareholder is represented on the Supervisory Boards. I admit, it’s a unique arrangement in terms of business and politics tied so closely together – it certainly presents an interesting and challenging business setting. Speaking of Count Zeppelin – his legacy has spawned several companies here in Friedrichshafen which are now global players in their fields with a reputation for excellence on the international market. Most cities would love to have so many high-tech jobs. On the flip side, does Friedrichshafen have a special responsibility here?

Andreas Brand: Absolutely. Friedrichshafen is a city where tradition and innovation meet on a daily basis, confronting us with ever-new challenges. To keep these high-tech jobs in our city, we must make sure that businesses have all the infrastructure they need – starting with good transport links right through to high-speed data connections. Workers similarly expect an excellent infrastructure in their city, whether it be mobility, education and care or properties for rent or sale. It’s all about offering a high quality of life. You moved here from Böblingen when you became Mayor of Friedrichshafen in 2009. Thinking back, what did you find most fascinating about Lake Constance, and Friedrichshafen in particular, in those early days? Andreas Brand:

From day one, my family and I found Friedrichshafen to be an incredibly dynamic city,

Friedrichshafen is one of the few cities in Germany with an ”ISEK”. What does this abbreviation stand for and what is the purpose of the project?

More information about Friedrichshafen:

Andreas Brand: ISEK is an acronym for the German phrase ”Integriertes Stadtentwicklungskonzept”, which translates as ”Integrated Urban Development Concept”, and is a process that we kicked off together with the residents in autumn 2015. Citizen participation is paramount in the ISEK process. We organise workshops, opinion polls, events and online forums on issues that cities need to address, both now and in the future. This includes economic and social aspects, ecology, culture and, of course, urban development. So basically central factors that impact urban development: What kind of future do we want to build for ourselves?

full of life and soul, keen to grow and evolve, to move forward and blaze new trails. I also thought the residents were extremely friendly, cosmopolitan and down-to-earth, not to mention industrious and far-sighted. Friedrichshafen was the only place on Lake Constance to be destroyed by bombs in World War II and so its development took an entirely different path from that of other towns in the region. How would you define your city from today’s vantage point, and what are its prospects for growth and advancement? Andreas Brand: This starting over is exactly what defines our city to this day.

The past brought many challenges, it’s true, but it also presented fantastic opportunities and prospects to grow and change course. Today, Friedrichshafen is a modern and vibrant city with all the trappings of sophistication to help shape our tomorrow. I’m talking, for instance about the digitalisation of society, economy and industry, or the demographic change. Friedrichshafen boasts a strong economy, with high quality of life, and that to me indicates it’s on the right track.

Which Friedrichshafen trade shows do you personally enjoy the most? Andreas Brand: I’m always intrigued by the IBO with its diverse portfolio of products and services. It’s a typical consumer exhibition with a long tradition and good prospects for the future. My son and I also like to go to the Faszination Modellbau – not just to browse, but to buy. What would you recommend as a must for visitors?

Andreas Brand: In summer I highly recommend a dip in the lake – in one of our fantastic outdoor pools. The Zeppelin Museum is well worth a visit at any time of the year. You’ll always find new things to discover here. Possibly the best kept secret, if you’re looking for somewhere to relax after a successful day at the exhibition, is the Stärr Schorsch in Fischbach – which is one of the most scenic beer gardens by the lake.

GUEST EXHIBITION STATEMENTS

A GOOD DECISION!

Why do successful guest exhibitions choose Friedrichshafen? We asked them.

You organise ”all about automation” that will be taking place in Friedrichshafen in 2017 for what will already be the 4th time. What is the main focus of your exhibition? ”all about automation” revolves around systems and components for industrial automation technology. The exhibition specifically addresses engineers, designers and those responsible for automation who live and work in the international Lake Constance region. ”all about automation” in Friedrichshafen offers them a trade forum right on their doorstep. What are your exhibition centre requirements for your event?

Even though this is a relatively small exhibition, optimum access and hall layouts are very important to us. The distances between car park, registration and exhibition hall have to be short, and the infrastructure has to fit with our exhibition concept. And what made you choose Friedrichshafen? The Lake Constance area is an attractive economic region. Friedrichshafen is the most important exhibition centre in this region. To start with, we were keen to stage ”all about automation” in the Lake Constance area – and our choice of Messe Friedrichshafen followed on from that.

You have now been working with Messe Friedrichshafen for over 3 years. How has that been, and what positive surprises have resulted out of this partnership? Professional, flexible, customer-friendly – everything is right about this partnership. There are two things that particularly impress me: the project team that looks after guest events sees itself as a stakeholder in the guest organiser’s success, and not simply as the administrator of the rental agreement. Secondly, the working relationship with service partners – whether it’s catering, utilities or media technology – is spot-on. Here too, the Friedrichshafen project management team sees itself as a central switchboard, and it really is able to influence things. www.automation-friedrichshafen.com

Martin Hämmerle Project Manager TURNING DAYS

You organise Turning Days which will be taking place in 2017 in Friedrichshafen for the 1st time. What is the focus of your exhibition? Baden-Württemberg has the greatest density in Europe of businesses specialising in the production of precision turned parts. These businesses have a high demand for investment goods, operating supplies and knowhow. That is exactly what they will get from the exhibitors at Turning Days. In addition, with the ”Future Factory” – an open forum on the subject of Industry 4.0 – we want to raise awareness of the latest state of technology and the challenges of the near future – always as seen from the viewpoint of the parts manufacturer in a small to medium-sized business.

In relocating, what requirements do you have of an exhibition centre?

And we’d like to sincerely thank the entire team at Messe Friedrichshafen for that!

Over the course of 6 exhibitions, we had ”outgrown” the capacity of the exhibition centre at our old venue in VillingenSchwenningen. Here in Friedrichshafen we have an exhibition centre of sizeable dimensions, infrastructure that is ideal for technical trade shows, and a very pleasant, modern ambience. That means our most important expectations are already met.

You have been working with Messe Friedrichshafen for a couple of months now. How has that been for you and what pleasant surprises have you had so far?

And what made you choose Friedrichshafen? It was the people behind Messe Friedrichshafen who settled it for us. From the first exploratory talks right up to today we have always been welcomed with unparalleled warmth and openness.

I would particularly like to mention the staff’s competence and professional approach. We hadn’t been very pampered at our previous venue, which is why we appreciate our partnership with the Friedrichshafen team all the more. We can be sure that promises will be kept and information will be passed on, and that everybody is making a contribution towards the success of our event. That’s what we call real cooperation! www.turning-days.de

The Guest Events Department of Messe Friedrichshafen organises events tailored to your wishes. Nothing’s impossible. With around 500 guest events per year the exhibition centre in Friedrichshafen constantly puts its adaptability to the test. Whether it is conferences, corporate events or trade fairs, with 12 halls, around 85,000 m² of exhibition space, flexi-size conference rooms, two central outdoor exhibition areas and the Messe Lake, we have unlimited scope for realising our clients’ individual ideas. Any event can be staged here – starting from small rooms to hire for 15 people all the way through to guest exhibitions

with around 1,700 exhibitors. Our clients value this flexibility which is why they include both companies from the local region as well as international firms who see Friedrichshafen as the ideal place to attract customers from Switzerland and Austria. Messe Fakuma, which presents the world of plastics technology, has been a ”regular” at Messe Friedrichshafen for over 30 years. We also play host to the in-house exhibitions BODAN, Movera and Fameba which have been staged together here successfully for around 10 years.

From wedding dress to precision engineering – it’s all here. The broad spectrum of events is also reflected in the various issues tackled every day by the team around Head of Guest Events + Business Development, Thomas Grunewald. From sport, technology and hobbies to meat or bakery supplies, everything runs together in the Guest Events Department, ensuring that Coordinators Eva Knoblauch and Ina Kolenda are never bored. This wellrehearsed trio is already familiar with the wishes of long-standing clients and can deliver exactly the right response. That’s a major advantage because, as the interface between clients, in-house trades and external service providers, solution-oriented action is key.

exhibition centre on 300 days of the year. This presents a logistical challenge too because planning needs to take build-up and break-down times as well as the event organisers’ preferred dates and the Messe Friedrichshafen’s fixed event times into account.

This dedication pays off because events of every size take place at the Friedrichshafen

Whether it’s a new client or an old acquaintance, one thing is certain – everything is in the best possible hands with the Messe Friedrichshafen’s facilitators.
