INSIDE ACCOUNT: MESSICK’S PARTS
Day in the Life of a Parts Technician Kurt Ebersole unit is down, and others where the customer is preparing for the season ahead of time. One of the most important things I’ve learned is the need to be a good listener, and to ask questions, both are essential to provide the best solution for the customer. Whether it’s just a simple part that is needed, or addressing a situation where we did not provide the service promised and expected, it is my job to make sure the customer, at the end of their transaction, feels they are valued, and were provided with exceptional service.
As a parts technician at Messick’s, my job involves a variety of tasks. These tasks include answering phones and emails, helping walk in customers, looking up parts, picking orders, and keeping our showroom clean and well stocked. Much of the day is spent problem solving. Whether answering the phone or working with a customer face to face, the challenge is deciphering what our customer is looking for. At times parts terminology varies from the customer to the parts catalog, which can be challenging. There are situations where a customer’s

Oil Science
Dave Shaw, Mount Joy Parts Synthetic, semi-synthetic, and mineral oils are three types of lubricants commonly used in various applications. These oils differ in their composition, properties, and performance. Mineral Oil: Derived from crude oil after refining, it’s cost-effective and suitable for basic lubrication but has lower high-temperature stability, often used in older vehicles.
Semi-Synthetic Oil: A blend of mineral and synthetic oils that balances affordability and performance. It can extend drain intervals and reduce over all costs versus straight mineral oil. Synthetic Oil: Engineered through chemical synthesis, it excels in high and lowtemperature stability, ideal for high-performance engines and demanding conditions.
In summary, the choice among synthetic, semisynthetic, and mineral oils depends on factors like application, budget, and performance requirements. Synthetic oils perform exceptionally well at higher engine temperatures, semi-synthetics offer a compromise, and mineral oils provide cost-effective lubrication for less demanding uses.

An inline oven draws each blade individually, which relieves internal stresses and improves ductility and quality. Brinell or Rockwell tests measure hardness to ensure resistance to wear. Tested for elasticity under load by applying pressure to the blade—the propensity of the blade to return to its original shape afterward is a measure of its ability to resist impact. WWW.MESSICKS.COM

CUSTOMER STORY
A Dream Realized on Land in Hanover: How the Right Equipment Changed Everything Betty’s dream of land ownership For Betty Vancott, the rolling hills of Hanover, Pennsylvania, were not just a backdrop to her life; they were the canvas of her dream. As she embarked on her farming journey, the challenge wasn’t just in the land, but in finding the tools to bring her vision to life. Her search led her to Messicks Abbottstown, where sales consultant Kevin Dotterer would play a pivotal role in turning her dream into reality. Betty’s first challenge was finding the right tractor, an endeavor that ended with the Kubota L3301 - a machine that promised reliability and versatility. However, it was the pursuit of the perfect mower that became her real conundrum. Initially, Betty grappled with a traditional rear rotary mower, its design forcing her to constantly look back, complicating rather than simplifying her work.
18
The breakthrough came with the introduction of the Lane Shark LS-3 attachment. This innovative tool, recommended by Kevin, was a game changer. Mounted on the front of her Kubota, it eliminated the need for constant turning and significantly expanded her brush cutting capabilities. Suddenly, Betty was not just mowing; she was effortlessly clearing brush along her driveway, trimming hard-toreach branches, and tackling tasks that were previously out of reach. What made the Lane Shark particularly appealing was its ease of attachment and detachment from the tractor, a feature that transformed Betty’s approach to farming. Gone were the days of wrestling with unwieldy equipment. Now, she could seamlessly switch between tasks, making the most of her time and her tractor.
Betty’s story isn’t just about finding the right equipment; it’s about the impact of understanding and empathetic service. Kevin Dotterer at Messicks wasn’t just selling a product; he was helping a dreamer find her wings. It’s a testament to the power of the right tools in realizing dreams and the difference thoughtful guidance can make. Betty’s journey resonates with many who seek to make their mark on the land. It underscores the importance of not just the tools we use, but the people who help us choose them. In the vast fields of Hanover, a farmer and her tractor are doing more than just cultivating land; they’re cultivating hope, powered by the right decisions made in a dealership in Abbottstown.

EXPERT ADVICE
6 Tips for Finding the Right Attachment Rob Dewey, Business Segment Director, Woods Equipment Company Finding the right attachment can be overwhelming, especially for new tractor owners. There are a lot of factors to consider and it’s wise to do some research ahead of time even before you walk into a dealership. To help with the process, here are the things you should know before purchasing a new attachment: 1. Know Your Tractor: Understand the specifications and capabilities of your tractor and check if the attachment is compatible with your tractor’s make and model. Attachments typically come with compatibility guidelines provided by the manufacturer. To help take the guesswork out of the process, the Woods website has a “Match My Tractor” tool for compact tractor owners that can help you select the correct attachment based on your tractor. 2. Determine the Application: Will this attachment be used in a heavy-duty, commercial application or for managing a smaller, personal property? How many hours do you expect to run the attachment annually? More hours, more acreage and more rugged applications will need more durable, heavy-duty equipment. In addition, some attachments are engineered to accomplish a single task. Other attachments can handle a variety of applications or offer optional features that allow you to do several tasks in a single pass. Knowing the job to be done, terrain conditions and duration of use will help you get the right equipment for the job. 3. Ease of Connection: You don’t want to waste time and energy simply trying to connect the attachment. So be sure to ask about how easy the attachment is to connect and disconnect from the tractor. For instance, the Woods Batwing® BW15 rotary cutter features the SmartLift™ System an exclusive feature designed for easy tractor hook-up, and Woods 3-point attachments are quick-hitch ready from the factory. 26
4. Evaluate Quality and Brand: Invest in attachments from reputable manufacturers known for quality and durability. Cut quality is often ranked as an important feature and indicator of overall quality. Look for proven superiority in evenness of cut and material distribution, backed by technology and testing. In terms of durability, low-quality attachments can lead to breakdowns, increased maintenance costs, and take more time to get the results you want. Look for brands with a longstanding reputation of performance that are tested and proven to withstand tough conditions. 5. Ease of Maintenance: Choose an attachment that’s easy to maintain and has features designed for simple upkeep. Look for models that have lubricated blade pins from the factory and are easy to lubricate in the field. 6. Warranty and Support: Check the warranty and after-sales support offered by the attachment manufacturer. Some warranties can be complex with a lot of fine print, which may contain exclusions or restrictions. To the contrary, the Woods Cut Above™ Warranty is simple, straightforward and on a single page. Compare manufacturers for the duration of coverage and whether the warranty covers parts, labor and freight. PARTS HOTLINE : 87 7.260.3528
