F

ounded in the 70’s by Dr. Joseph Dello Russo, New Jersey Eye Center (NJEC) became the first eye care center in New Jersey that treats all eye conditions by offering specialty doctors, an optical shop, the first ASC in the Northeast, and by having cataract surgery as an in-office procedure. Our ambulatory surgical center was the first of its kind and led the way to the spread of outpatient surgery options in other specialties as well. In 1990, the first Dello Russo LaserVision center was opened within the same site in Bergenfield, NJ, specializing in laser vision cor rect ion. Since 2000, t hree addit ional locations were opened to ser ve patients in and around the Brooklyn, Manhattan and Long Island areas.

Laser Vision Correction Center At our New Jersey of fice, all laser vision correction surgeries are performed in an ultra-

modern, 38,000 sq. f t. surgical center by Drs. Joseph and Jef frey Dello Russo. Our professional team is headed up by surgeon and founder, Joseph Dello Russo, M.D., and his son, eye surgeon Jeff Dello Russo, M.D., who carries on his father’s tradition of excellence in patient care and visual outcomes. The multi-disciplinar y practice (NJEC) is rounded out by a cataract surgeon, a glaucoma specialist, a medical retina specialist, staf f optometrists, operating room RNs, and board certified anesthesiologists to offer our patients the most complete care possible. Dello Rus so Laser Vision and T he New Jersey Eye Center have been national leaders in their fields, helping to pioneer most of the leading technologies in use today. Our laser correction center was centrally involved in the FDA trials of the excimer laser during the 90’s that eventually led to the approval of this technology. During that clinical trial period (1991-1996), the of fice of Joseph Dello Russo, M.D. was the most prominent

of the 10 par ticipating centers, per forming more t re at ment s t h a n a ny of t he ot her st udy cont r ibutors. Addit ionally, in 1997 we gained special FDA approval to conduct unique clinical trials to treat higher degrees of ne a r sightedne s s, fa r sightedne s s, a nd ast igmat ism wit h laser vision cor rect ion, leading to eventual FDA approval for these procedures. Not only have the Dello Russo doctors played an integral role in helping to develop, test, and implement these lasers nationwide, but the Lasik practice was also involved with the adoption of the Intralase laser technology. Our office was the first in the United States to use this new laser, offering blade-less Lasik in combination with Dr. Joseph Dello Russo’s pioneering Down-Up Lasik™ technique. Additionally, we were the first practice in the New York area to use Custom Cornea Wavefront technology for primary and secondary treatment, and we have been pleased to offer this important advance in vision correction to our patients. elcome to the fascinating world of Book Nook, a premier destination for the nurturing of young minds. The cozy home learning environment is located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. It is a modern day “Little Red School House” down the street in the very heart of the Big Apple. It is the brain-child of educator and founder Rina S. Patel, MsEd. “I am filling the gaps between grade levels (Toddlers, Pre-K and Kindergarten). It’s a whole child approach in an organic set ting, building children’s confidence, k nowledge and foundat ion of life. Age specific curriculum is ver y impor tant, and especially effective in small group settings. Within the curriculum, the program teaches kids manners, social skills, greeting/departing skills, patience, determination and etiquette.” In addition, art and music is included in each class. The Book Nook curriculum makes learning literacy an enjoyable experience and kids never want to leave. Also “Book Nook” Prepares your child for kindergarten acceptance with interviewing skills, testing preparation and overall confidence building. Also, there are no electronic devices allowed to aid in t he sylla bus w hich per mit s a disturbance-free set ting. Studies have shown that getting youngsters involved at an early age produces tremendous benefits that aid them on their individual educational path. Forget about the yelling and crying hysterics we encountered ever y time we tried separation in the past — I did not even receive the hug or kiss I was asking for as my girls ran into the class feeling safe and mesmerized. Rina’s excellent reinforcement of structure and routine, combined with an ou t st anding ac ademic met hod of teaching, has transformed my primarily Russian speaking t wins into two year old bilingual smarty pant s. She keeps her cla s ses small to make sure she gives each child a customized learning approach. My kids couldn’t get enough of her, begging to go to school ever y day, and I couldn’t get enough of how much t hey were speaking, underst anding, following directions and enjoying every part of it, that I started using her for private lessons as well. Now I just wish she would star t a preschool because every school I have toured doesn’t even compare with the gem she has built at the Book Nook.” — Sofia Jacob, mother of 3 year old twin girls. “From the moment we set foot inside Book Nook, the warm and inv i t ing env ironment drew my son in. From that day on he has always been excited to go, and looks for ward to seeing what he and his friends will be exploring each week. Obesity in America It’s Getting Worse

D e s p i t e the attention of the health profession, the media, and the public, and mass educational campaigns about the benefits of healthier diets and increased physical activity, the prevalence of obesity in the United States has more than doubled over the past four decades. Add the relatively few Americans who practice the habit of regular physical activity to the many who practice the habit of “super-sizing,” and it is no revelation why this has occurred. o be a leader in health and fitness you need determination and dedication. Those traits are on display at a facility that is as New York as it gets. It’s huge and has everything. If you can’t find it here... they don’t make it.

What’s in a name? Astoria Sports Complex should really be called Astoria Sports Community, because that is what it is: a place that strives to serve and service it’s residents. The massive complex is a labyrinth of “Everything Sports Related.” The familyfriendly facility boasts the gamut of athletic options. There are: swimming pools, free-weights, cardio, state of the art fitness classes, batting cages, basketball courts, indoor soccer fields and much, much more. Astoria Sports Complex also provides: fitness trainers, swimming lessons and intramural leagues along with all full service gym amenities. In addition to complete Party Packages for birthdays or any other celebration, Astoria Complex Catering is about to open in our 4th floor penthouse — a luxurious, fine dining facility with amazing views of Queens and Manhattan, luxurious Crystal 26

chandeliers, marble floors, full bar and a full kitchen. They will cater anything from Baby/Bridal showers, to weddings. We call it the Waldorf Astoria of Queens, without the Manhattan prices. The entire facility has indoor parking on the premises and is secured with a highly trained staff that is both courteous and professional. Astoria Spor ts Complex should really be called Queens’ own Madison Square Garden because that is what it is: a name that has untarnished pride & reputation, a place that strives to ser ve and ser vice its beloved communit y residents.

Looking out for the community They have a saying over here “Your Health is your Wealth”. Just ask proud owner Steve Poliseno, “We

started Astoria Sports Complex over 36 years ago when the site was a former ice house. My family and I love Astoria and wanted a safe and healthy environment for the community. We make improvements each year so that folks here have the most up-to-date equipment on the market.” Our soccer field, Installed by Domenick Carapella, has F.I.F.A. approved astroturf by LIMONTA imported from Italy. We are the only indoor facility in the state of NY with this tu rf system. To go along with the largest hot Jacuzzi in Queens, and his or her saunas, Astoria Sports Complex is looking to expand by adding 4 levels to the existing complex: An indoor ice skating rink; a regulation size indoor soccer field — complete with upper deck stands; and two restaurants, a l l in the near future. You want to go swimming and spend the afternoon doing aquatic sports? You don’t have to go to the Bahamas... they come here. So come on down to the Astoria Sports Complex, it is like going on an all-inclusive dynamite vacation right in the heart of Queens. w w w. m e t l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

Mio Alpha Strapless Heart-Rate Monitor One of the best ways to ma ximize your workouts is to train by hear t rate. But until now, doing so required wearing a watch and a clunky chest strap. By sensing the volume of blood under your skin at the wrist, Mio’s Alpha watch is the first monitor to deliver continuous heart rate readings all on its own. It’s compatible with your favorite Bluetoothenabed devices and is accurate at running speeds up to 12 mph, according to company research. $199 | Mio Alpha Strapless Heart-Rate Monitor

Under Armour Toxic 6 Get deadly serious about running with these poison-dart-frog-inspired kicks. Even though the design is hardcore, they promise to be gentle on your feet: The stretchy neoprene upper and low heel height encourage a more nat ural st r ide, while a symmet r ic al lacing relieves pressure on the top of the foot. $120 | Under Armour Toxic 6

Take the dread out of spinning inside by splurging on a high-tech indoor bike trainer. Not only does the KICKR use a rear-wheel casset te instead of pushing your back tire against a roller (no more ruined tires! Real road feel!), but it’s also ANT+ and Bluetooth 4.0 compatible, with a power meter built into the hub. What does this mean in non-nerd talk? Basically that you can use your iPhone to control and track your ride. Download a videoenabled app like TrainerRoad or Kinomap, which includes simulated race routes and workouts, and you’ve got the next best thing to riding outdoors. You see the actual route and the KICKR adjusts accordingly—meaning you can be climbing a 15 percent grade one second and flying downhill the next. $999 | Wahoo Fitness KICKR Power Trainer

uh? Yes if old Deano was alive he would be singing the praise of this shrine to culinary goodness. A s you pedest r ianly s aunter dow n Mulber r y S t. you sor t of crave Old World flavor, and then maybe some tor tellini to tickle t he t aste buds. But where should you go? There are so many restaurants and cafes to chose from. Well, one trat toria stands out as the bench mark of delectible cuisine both nor thern and southern. Da Nico’s has been around for over 20 years. It’s presence on a block, literally littered with competition only goes to show you that good food and good service, not to mention good cheer, will withstand the test of time as well as the test of trends. The duplex eater y boasts a massive

outdoor dining area that on a warm day, upon first seeing it whether you speak Italian or not you say “Al Fresco!” The extensive menu has everything that you could want that comes from the Boot. Traditional dishes are of fered, along with robust and savor y pizzas (trust me I had one... yummy) and an eclectic array of new favorites.

Above and Beyond All Rivals “Uptown they call it Pasta, here we call it Spaghetti!” says owner Nick. “Our place is your place, we welcome ever ybody to come down and have truly authentic Italian eat s. It is our pride and joy. My great grandmother did not make the oven but some of the bricks from her own oven are right over there.” Nostalgic Nick gestures towards his fier y coal brick oven. The restaurant is available for par ties

and wants patrons to know that things will always feel the same... like home... from the exposed brick to the table cloths to the professional waiters. When you walk in you can chose a Neapolit an feel or maybe Florentine vibe or maybe Rome is your destination. Hold on let me give that some thought. Af ter gorging on my Pizza Margherita I could not but wonder why there are not many more of these places around...But there are, this is the real New York, This is the real Lit tle Italy! Upon leaving Da Nico, this native New Yorker glanced back at not just a meal but a New York experience. One that will remain with him, because it is a reminder of things that have gone by, that have changed, that have passed, but... wait a second... I perked up immediately...Da Nico, is not going anywhere... They’re dug in.

Dining in the Dark

H

ave you ever wondered what it is like to dine in the dark I was asked? You mean by candlelight I answered. No, completely in the dark. Even as I was still unsure of what he was t alking about, my par t y of three and myself were ushered of f to stand silently at a dark velvet cur tain covering a n opening le ading to a n unk now n destination. At t he ent ra nc e we were greeted by a gregarious Tina who is visually impaired who was to be our guide on our gastronomic dark voyage. After being asked about any food allergies, we were lined up single file and led through a cavernous maze of t wists and turns that made me wish I had lef t some bread crumbs behind. Rela x, Tina is here to t ake care of you. After gingerly seating my party with others communally at our tables, I realized that I had no idea where I was, and it was literally pitch black; I could not see

4466

my hand in front of me even when I held it an inch away from my eye. We a ll u n c o m fo r t a b l y i n t ro d u c e d ourselves to one another, talk about a blind date! Tina led us through a series of sensor y adjustment s: How to pour water without spilling.; How to eat with a knife and fork...Yes...I admit it, I used my hands. Hey, who was watching. Maybe the killer in “Silence of the lambs” with his night vision goggles. (Later I found out everybody else ate with their fingers too) First, an appetizer was ser ved along with a glass of wine. It was eer y fun, trying to figure out what I was ravenously eating while testing my vino skills with each savor y sip. Is it chilled Beaujolais or something from the Loire Valley? We all playfully argued about what was what. In the end we were pret t y much all wrong. It did not matter because the food was original and tested the senses. Next was the entree. Same scenario as before. But now I was get ting used to being “In the

Dark” with no touch of grey. This was nice for me because I was with my boss who is not easy on the eyes. At last a delicious desser t was served and then after some wine infused banter we were led ou t by T ina t he s a me circuitous way we came in. As my eyes adjusted to the light it became clearer to me how special an experience this had been. No sighted, we were led over to a tray displaying what we had just noshed on. I was ver y dissapointed in my overall powers of deduction, I was nine out of ten wrong. The only thing I got right was the wine. Not color, region. Yes, I will work on that Bill W. Dans Le Noire is an education unto i t s el f. I t ex po s e d me to my inne r k inest hesia and my overall sense of Being. It made me appreciate many things. The food was out st anding as well, during, and after I found out what it was.

was recently in Venice and I sampled some the best Northern Italian cuisine I had ever had. Each restaurant or enoteca was just glorious, as the sweet smell of garlic wafted through the caffe. I love garlic and it keeps the vampires away. From the owners to the chef to the waiters, professionalism was on display and know how and skill was on the menu. I wished I could find places just like these in New York. Every restaurant I walk by seems to specialize in Southern Italian. Whatever happened to Northern? Like Rigatoni Broccoli Rabe? ew York City boasts some of the finest homes in the world. Creating a high-quality residence, either an apartment or a townhouse, requires careful consideration and a skilled hand. James Koster Architect has been designing unique, world-class buildings, additions and interiors in NYC and beyond for over twenty years. James says, “Our process always begins with listening to our client s. We never impose a st yle on anybody that doesn’t suit them. Instead, we examine the special context of each project, the aspirations of the individual client and the functional and budget ar y requirement s such t hat no t wo projects are ever alike.” Some of their project s convey a sleek, minimal sensibilit y while other designs are rooted in a more familiar, traditional aesthetic. James has developed many techniques for the integration of contemporar y systems and uses into period homes in a way that doesn’t unset tle the old-world appeal.

James says, “I’m definitely not one of those guys who will tell you that ever ything new has to look new… but it can.” His boutique firm allows James to be intimately involved wit h ever y project. James is a stickler for ef ficiency, and he really sweats the details. James likes to say, “Great design ideas only work when we do,” and he explains that translating the big ideas into materials and details is a major par t of this work. James likes a challenge, and he has even been known to say, “Your design challenges are my delight.” James and his highlytrained staff are masters at making difficult tasks look easy. They enjoy the complexity of squeezing central air conditioning into pre-war apartments, coordinating complex systems and assemblies and getting visible changes made in landmark districts. The firm maintains strong relationships with contractors all over the city. James and his staff like to work alongside contractors in a team-oriented approach all the way

t hrough const ruction to guarantee t he satisfaction of their clients. James earned a Master of Architecture from Princeton University in 1992 where he also taught construction technology. James also holds a graduate-level Advanced Profes sional Cer tific ate in Real Est ate Development from New York Universit y. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Design from the Universit y of Pennsylvania where he graduated cum laude.
