A Zero stress approach to Home Renovation

S

tudies have shown that home renovation can be extremely stressful. In fact, many relationship counselors have stated that some couples end up in divorce after remodeling their home: the decisions that have to be made regarding style, design and even color have left many people utterly aggravated and stressed out. So before your remodeling situation gets so inflamed that you fall off the wagon, go into therapy, or see a marriage counselor, contact this local Staten Island design firm. They will help professionally coordinate your creative efforts, and make this difficult undertaking as painless as possible. Yours, Mine & R’s Home Improvements i s a b o u t i q u e d e mi u rg i c s h o w ro o m located at 93 Main Street in the hear t of Tot tenville. The customers are making extremely sensitive decisions about their homes, which in the end, let’s face it, are basically set in stone.”

In addition, it sells bathroom furniture, faucets, bathtubs, sinks, tiles, windows and doors. In other words the company runs the gamut of domestic dwellings. Spring Allergies Advice from the office of Dr. Gadi Avshalomov M.D. Do you suf fer from nasal congestion sneezing or sinus infections? Does spring bring about the familiar itchy eyes, or wheeze? Do you f ind t hat your t hroat feels sore a lot during those bright spring mornings? If so, you could be suf fering from pollen allergies. Pollen allergies are often the cause of a lot of headaches, itchy eyes, wheezing, and coughing. During the spring, the source of allergens is usually gra s s a nd t ree pollen —f loat ing r ight outside your window. Pollen may be seen as a green-yellow coating on almost anything outdoors, the spring pollen season star ts in late March and goes into early July.

consistently rates as the most difficult time for allergic patients. How can you tell if you’re a victim of spring allergies? If you notice that your symptoms tend to occur suddenly as the season changes ever y year. If you’re the one who is wheezing through Easter or that Passover sinus infection never passes you over, then you probably have springtime allergies. If you get that familiar itch in the corner of your eyes ever y April or May then you most definitely have pollen allergies. Itchy red eyes are one of the most characteristic symptoms of spring

seems to be on the rise. Many people that suf fer from allergic Asthma in the spring frequently suf fer from Asthma at other times of the year; so good control of their Asthma year round translates to easier breathing in the spring. If this sounds like you, there are some things that you can do.

allergies; the reason for this is that tree pollen is ver y irrit ating to the lining of our eyes causing allergic conjunctivitis. Allergic conjunctivitis is ver y common amongst allergic patients and at times it can be ver y annoying, resulting in eyes swelling shut or even permanent changes in vision (keratoconus). Although itchy eyes are the most common allergic symptom suf fered during the spring, it cer t ainly isn’t the most severe, dif ficulty breathing and shortness of breath (Allergic Asthma) however can become ver y severe, maybe even life threatening. Allergic Asthma af fect millions of people ever y spring in the United States and its prevalence

This may seem like a lot of work just for a stuf fy nose or itchy eyes, but allergies should not be taken lightly. Not only are they uncomfortable, they can lead to many more serious problems like recurrent sinus infections — which untreated, can lead to other complications — and serious, asthma at tacks. In the end its safe to say that even people with pollen allergies can salvage some of those beautiful spring days, but it takes some planning and ef for t. So take your allergy medicine, run your air filters and try to make the best of it, because before you can blink those swollen itchy eyelids it will be fall.

Spring Allergens Just as winter comes to an end and the snow starts to melt the gears of the spring allergy season are set into motion. This abundance of water in early March will feed both the outdoor molds and the swelling buds on the trees, by early April daylight will be long enough to stimulate growth in the trees and wake them from their winter hibernation. The first growth of trees and grasses are the buds, these are the buds that throw of f pollen into the air. Most buds open af ter dusk and close at dawn; this is why people with pollen allergies should never sleep with open windows. Although the pollen season star ts in April it continues to build on itself until it peaks in late may or early June, when the buds dye of heat or lack of rain. Pe o ple t hin k t h at h av in g s e a s o n a l allergies is “normal”. One may frequently hear people say “all I get is some sneeze or cough and itchy eyes for a few weeks”. What most people don’t realize is that lurking beneath those few common symptoms is a very complex immune reaction, which may result in sinusitis, eczema and even asthma in a few years. Unfortunately many patients dread the beginning of springtime. Spring

Tips for surviving allergy season • Find out what are you actually allergic to, i.e. Tree pollen, grass pollen, mold… • If you are allergic to pollen close your windows through the pollen season. If you must open them then only bet ween sunrise and sunset. • Limit your outdoor exposure and when you enter your house change your clothes. Take your showers at night t his will prevent the pollen in your skin and hair from accumulating in your bed. • Change the filters in your air conditioner, and run a H.E.P.A. filter in your bed room • Tr y to avoid outdoor activities and mowing the lawn • See your family doctor or Allergist and start treating your allergies a week or t wo before your symptoms usually star t. If medication don’t help much ask your doctor if allergy shots are right for you.

I have ever ybody from the police to firemen to the people at Verizon coming by. I could of sworn I saw Ralph Kramden the other day. And my father John (original owner) comes by everyday and helps out everyday too. We wouldn’t have it any other way.” Luckily I was within earshot when I heard what they were cooking up next. The Sweet taste of Brooklyn

T

hey say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. It is safe to say you can improve on perfection, however. One local bakery is proof that you can always move forward to new heights without ever forgetting the past or what got you there.

75 delicious years Cuccio’s bakery has been around since 1937. To say it is a neighborhood landmark is an understatement. The pastr y parlor is celebrating 75 years in t he busines s of concocting delicious delectables along with some absolutely mouth watering breads. Cuccio’s is a third ge ne r at ion la bor of love and its owner John Cuccio, (who incidentally to his credit was an Emergency Medical Technician for eight years) could not be any prouder. “It has been great being par t of this community”, he gushed ”When you have generations of customers coming in over the years it makes you so proud, and puts a smile on your face”.

Into the Future The tasty haven has gone through an extensive remodeling. As Cuccio puts it, “to bring the place into the 21st centur y, without surrendering it’s old world charm.” The shop will always turn out a full line of breads, pastries and of course their world famous jelly and cream doughnuts. In addition to gastronomic Italian staples like

48

M e t r o p o l i ta n L i v i n g

spumoni and rainbow cookies, the baking haven is also of fering French pastries like eclairs and croissants. “We want to be more international” says the proud owner. To keep up with the competition the baking mecca is experimenting with an ever growing range of signature cakes. “We have been tr ying out various recipes and designs so that we can make what ever cake a customer wants without having it break the bank”. Cuccio goes on to emphasize that wedding cakes are another specialty. “Wedding season i s u p o n u s ”, c h u c k l e s Cuccio, “We can produce a cake that is made to your own specifications and we guarantee your guests won’t be disappointed; in fact they will probably ask you for the recipe”.

Heart & Soul of the Community Locals love to savor all of the bakeries scrumptious of ferings and can’t get over how friendly and old-school the place is. “It’s great that with all the fancy-schmancy stuf f popping up all over the cit y” one customer s aid, “we have a real place that never let’s us forget the past and still provides a great doughnut at a great price. We can’t let these places ever leave us. They are our heritage.” Another loyal customer, Frank from Tottenville, exclaims “my grand k ids just love it here, but shhhhhhhhh don’t tell my daughter because she will now know I am spoiling them. But hey, what else does a grandfather do”?

I d o l c i s o n o m a g n i f i c i. Il p a n e è assolutamente meraviglioso! Non vedo l’ora di provare i dolci Cuccio nuovi ... Yum! That is the bat tle cr y at this Kings County mainstay. If you just take a gander at the lines of people waiting to buy some pastries, it looks like Cuccio’s is not going any where. In fact expansion might be something to think about so that ever y borough has a cake shop that dispenses sweets so fantastic it makes your taste buds want to scream.

Cocktail Pools

Small Wonders for the Space-Challenged Environment By Bob Blanda President, Mill Bergen Pools, Brook lyn, New Yor k 718-763-5500 w w w.millbergenpools.com

T

he 20-foot by 40-foot or larger swimming pool has long been the dream of many subur ban homeowners wit h a large back yard and plent y of room to spare. Here in the nor t heast, however, and in ot her areas of the countr y where a growing number of homeow ners are c h o o s in g t o li ve in urban environments, quite a different pool i s b e i n g s e l e c t e d. That pool is the “c o c k t a i l ” o r m i n i p o o l. I t i s a s f u l l y accessorized and as elegant as it s larger count r y cousin, but set in a cit y, town or s m a l l-l ot s u b u r b a n lo c at io n. I t i s t r ul y a gem to look at and to use. The cocktail or mini pool is growing in popularity because many people—tired of the long commute, paying high fuel prices or bot h — want to live closer to wor k, but do not want to give up t he lifest yle t hat includes a pool and beautiful landscaping. The size of t he pool does not mat ter as long as it is in proper propor t ion to t he rest of t he yard. For many, t he cock t ail pool conjures up images of family and friends rela xing a ro u n d t h e p o o l e nj oy in g d r in k s w i t h t h e b a r b e c u e g o i n g. T h e p o o l i s t h e foc al point of t hat environment: it is for rela xation, enter t ainment and a place to cool of f on a hot day. It is a treat for the

eye from inside the house looking out or from t he yard; it of fers t he sight s and sounds of r unning water; it is t r uly an oasis in an urban environment.

How Big Is a Cock tail Pool? I have of ten been a sked how big is a cock t ail pool, compared to t he more t r adi t ion a l s i ze d pool? I c on s ide r a ny pool t hat is 24 feet or les s in lengt h to

be a c ock t a il pool. W hen you include s tep s into t he pool, i t is not t y pic a ll y one in which you c an jump in and swim laps. Yet even in this space-constrained set t ing, if swimming laps and exercise is on the agenda for you, a swim stream — a water jet t hat allows t he swimmer to swim against t he cur rent — c an be incorporated along with speakers below water level so that the swimmer can enjoy his or her favorite music while doing laps. On my pool projects in urban set tings, t he lot size dic t ate s w hat I c a n build. In t he ci t y, t he set back s a re f ive feet from the back proper t y line and five feet

from t he t wo sides, so if I have a 35foot long lot, I c an build a 25-foot long pool. Many pools are smaller bec ause the client wants to incorporate extensive landscaping and room to entertain around t he pool.

Fully Accessorized Environments W hile t he pool may be sma ller, t he p a c k a g e t h a t a c c o m p a n i e s i t i s n ot. Yo u c a n c re a t e a n oasis in the midst of cit y living that is complete with special lighting, water ef fects and elegant t ile designs and f inishes. Unlike i t s l a rge r s ubu r b a n cousin where t ile is often used only along t he water line, in a cocktail pool that tile or pebble f inish c an be incorporated into the entire interior sur fac e to cre ate a magnif icent set t ing. For many client s, small can mean incorporating a deck of granite or natural stone, LED 4 color light ing t hat slowly changes color to shade s of blue, green, magent a or w hi te. I t a l s o a llow s for t he s ound of r ushing water w it h c a sc ading st re ams of water, water falls, bubbling fount ains or da z zling sprays. W hile we may be hired to build t he p o o l af t e r t h e b ac k y a rd h a s a lre ad y been designed by a landscape architect, mo s t of ten i t is our job to c re ate t he ent ire environment. us to create a t hree-dimensional living, “breathing” picture, complete with sound & visual ef fects to create an exact replica of what the yard environment will be. You can pick and choose the elements that you want, and you c an visualize what t hose element s will be like once t he project is done. You see it all projected before your eyes in living color. But more t han t hat, when we create a computer design, you can take a virtual tour around the pool and spa and view it from the deck, from inside the house looking through a window, from t he second stor y or even over head. You can see the pool with the sun shining on i t in t he day or at night wit h t he moon ref lect ing on the water. You can see and hear t he crackle of a fire pit, the sounds of the water feat ures and even t h e b ac kg ro u n d s o u n d s of your environment, whether it is urban or suburban.

Af ter a quick visit New Wave determined that her Bromine levels where too high”. “It’s so nice when a company is helpful and this professional” said Stella, “now my summer bar-b-q’s won’t smell like the YMCA”. That type of access and precision is what New Wave is all about.

Why is service: the number one priority? Because New Wave underst ands how impor t ant your pool is to you and your k ids. re you tired of looking for just a regular butcher? Are you getting stymied by long lines at the local gourmet garage? Is it frustrating that the person slicing up your meat seems to care more about landing a part on Broadway than cutting the Capicola as thin as you like it? If you answered yes than there is a certain place you need to know about. This meat lover’s mecca is the leader, hands down, when it comes to proper handling artistry. A & S Pork Store is authentic to the bone. T he ow ners, a fat her and son team, are not actors these are guys who eat and sleep... me at. T he Avenue X chop shop ha s be en around since 1966 and has been per fecting its cuts through the years. If you need any type of comestible (99% Italian)...these guys are there to help. They offer ever t ype of meat and cut imaginable: Beef, Por k, Veal, Saus ages and the list keeps growing. In addition, delectable sandwiches and hot food is prepared fresh daily for your enjoyment. Ever y thing from Chicken and Eggplant Parmigiano to enticing Meatball hero’s. “I have been here almost fifty years”, said Joe Sr., ”this place has been my life and I am so happy to pass it down to my son. Even my mother-in -law was happy...Thanks again A & S you are a real life saver. The family run Meat Mansion just wants locals to know that they are there for them. A & S will go that extra slice...I mean mile...to accommodate a customer’s whims. Locals always pop in and say

come in they are always playfully arguing with one another, which I don’t mind because the more they argue...the better the meat is..” said Al from Bay Ridge. The catering business is what Brooklynites are really raving about. “I wanted to throw a family Bar-B-Q and I did not want to do the cooking,” lamented Gail from Coney Island, “I went in to A & S, spoke with Joe Jr. and presto my

I want to thank my wife (Roseanne) for all the things she has put up with.” They have been married almost 50 years...I am sure A&S Pork Store will be around for another half a centur y. Let’s hope.

Diva Dance: The Beginnings Of Dreams And Careers

ivas to the dance floor please! You may have heard that command echo over the loudspeaker while at a cavernous nightclub, but this time it’s a little different. It’s a happy-go-lucky battle cry that is emanating through all of Kings County! These divas are young in age, but they certainly pack the same punch...I mean step! So where can you channel your inner Isadora Duncan? Or are you the next Gelsey Kirkland? Or can you learn to jete like Nijinsky? Where can you learn the pirouet te moves so you can be noticed and be the next winner of “Dancing with the stars? No...it’s not at some ultra stuf fy school like a Julliard...Quite the c ont r a r y...i t ’s a loc a l (da nc e) studio that has some serious legs.

“Where dreams come true” That’s the slogan for the Diva Dance Center located on Avenue S in Brooklyn. To say it’s a ones t o p-h o p f o r a l l y o u r d a n c e needs is not a hyperbole. The studio caters to ever y age range from one and a half years old to adult. Diva Dance of fers a wide variety of classes, from beginner to advanced. All styles are taught by Award Winning professionals! Classes include Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Belly dancing, Salsa, Hip-Hop, Acro, Broadway Ja z z / Tap, and also boys classes. In addition, mothers are provided with t wo choices of special classes. There is Mommy and Me, and Mommy Jazz funk. June Cleever and the Beaver would be rocking out. The gam galler y prides itself on the simple ar t of “teaching”. O w n e r/ i n s t r u c t o r Ta r a W i l d e,

You don’t have to go to Manhattan anymore “T his place ha s been great ” exclaimed

You always hear t hat t he best dance teachers are in Manhat tan. That may have been true a long time ago-But Diva Dance is kicking up it’s legs and jumping and leaping to the forefront for it’s cur t ain c all.

The perfect afterschool activity Denise from Sheepshead Bay had this to say, “My kids get out of school at around three in the afternoon and it’s terrific that they have this studio to go to. I can’t tell you how wonderful the teachers are, and both my girls just can’t get enough of the place.” S o i f yo u r c hild h a s g ot t h e dancing bug, whet her it be new age or t he clas sic s, Diva Dance S t u d i o i s re a d y a n d w i l l i n g t o heed the call. “We are so excited to be a par t of the Brooklyn community,” gushed owner Wilde, “Diva Dance Studio is (all) about family so having all these parents a nd k ids da ncing in a nd ou t is just ter rif ic.” “Where dreams come true” may be their slogan...but it’s seems more like just a plain fact of life. House of Crabs: Where Fresh is Guaranteed

A

re you tirelessly looking for quality seafood? Did you just get back from down south and wish you could find fresh shellfish closer to home? Are you tired of driving two hours to New Jersey to sample some mouth-watering crustaceans? Yes...you say...then you are exactly like the owners of a brand new crab house on Hylan Boulevard. After feeling the same “hunger” pain, this husband and wife duo decided to do something about it. Construction began and a new destination restaurant has been created. House of Crabs is ex ac t l y w h at i t cla ims to be, a, no muss, no fus s, aqua joint t hat is dedicated to ever y thing with fins, shells and legs. The Eatery prides itself on everything crab offering a smorgasbord of salivating samples. Chose from King Crab Legs, Snow Crab Legs, Dungeness Crab and Rock Crab. Or you can dive into a variety of other seafood dishes that are both fresh and cooked to per fection.

usually (in my experience) one of them is always crabby. Families and friends have a ball as they pound and smack their way to fresh meat that has been per fected in both hot and spicy boils. Ginger scallion

was missing really fresh crab and then I stumbled onto this place. I went in, sat down, and now I know where to go when I get the urge. Thanks for recognizing what Staten Island was lacking and filling

sauce sound good to you? I thought so!

If it is crab you crave ... it is crab you get

Owner Marty Blustin and wife Biatta are excited that they could bring this seafood experience to the people of Staten Island. “We live here and we always wanted to recreate the typical Crab House here in the borough’, said Blustin, “this is a labor of love for both of us, and we just wanted to share our food with the community”. After the grand opening, local folks seem to be coming by the droves to feed there crab addiction. “I just got back from Florida last week”, said Steve from New Dorp, “I

a need.” Always bashful, the owners just want locals to come on down to kill t wo crabs with one stone. Diners can bash the crab out of it’s integument to take out frustration, while get ting stuf fed on the lit tle delicious bellyachers. “I have four boys”, said Ramona from Todt Hill, “this is a godsend...I bring them down here and they can get full, tired, and make a mess and I don’t have to worr y about it, or clean up.” Thank you House of Crabs. So pay a visit to The House of Crab. You won’t be disappointed until you get your cleaning bill. But hey, anything this wonderful will come at a price. Good thing the menu is reasonable so it’s not that big a deal.

House of Crabs suggest s you come casual because things can get a lit tle messy. You will be provided with a bib, a mallet, a hammer, and all the utensils you will need to crush crabs shells, extricate the savor y meat and dip it into one of House of Crabs delectably infused sauces. Yum! There is also a section that is set aside for couples...which is good because

Entertainment Guide Meadowlands: Racing at its Best

T

he Meadowlands Racetrack is a horse racing track at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, United States. The track hosts both thoroughbred racing and harness racing. It is known popularly in the region as “The Big M.”

History Opened in the mid 1970s, Meadowlands Racetrack held its first-ever harness race on September 1, 1976 while thoroughbred racing commenced on September 6, 1977. With the exception of the opening season of 1976, autumn has been dedicated to the thoroughbreds, while the rest of the year features standardbreds, or harness horses. The advertising campaign that accompanied t he st ar t of t horoughbred racing at the Meadowlands in 1977 was highly sophist ic ated and well-received, and was chiefly noted for its use of the song “Racing With The Moon,” originally 116

p o p u l a r i ze d i n 19 41 b y b a n d l e a d e r Vaughn Monroe (alluding to the fact that the racing was to be conducted at night - a circumstance that still per tains, although af ternoon programs during long holiday weekends are occasionally put on). More recent adver tising campaigns have included a direct and catchy approach to attending live racing — “It’s All About Being Here – The Meadowlands!” With its sweeping curves and wide stretches, the “Big M” has been known for exceptional times for harness racing. Opening night at the track featured the fastest harness mile run in New Jersey to that time, 1:55 by Rambling Willie. The world record for a mile by a standardbred, 1:46 by Holborn Hanover, in rein to George Brennan, was established at the track on August 5, 2006 in a division of the U.S. Pacing Championship. The Meadowlands Racetrack has been the site of the Hambletonian, the second leg of the Trotting Triple Crown, since 1981.

The 2010 Hambletonian was won by Muscle Massive, driven by Ron Pierce, in a time of 1:51. Leading drivers in recent seasons have included Ron Pierce, Brian Sears, George Brennan, and Tim Tetrick. The track is operated by the New Jersey Spor ts and Exposition Authorit y, also the operator of Monmouth Park. Sam McKee and Ken Warkentin are the current race callers and announcers for the Meadowlands. Veteran spor tscaster Dave Johnson, the track’s lead public-address announcer from its opening until the early 2000s (dec ade), st ill does promot ional event s for the track as it s “senior track announcer.” In July 2009, the Meadowlands Rail Line opened for event ser vice, but is expected to run daily upon completion of the nearby American Dream Meadowlands. r ac et r ac k s, h a s lo ng h ad hi s s ight s o n Meadowlands Racetrack for possible conver sion into a shor t t rack venue for NASCAR events in the New York Cit y area. His mo s t re c ent of s ever a l at tempt s to purchase the track failed in the late 1990s. A repor t is sued in Januar y 2010 by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie discussed the idea of closing the Meadowlands Racet rack and selling it for commercial development or converting it into a NASCAR facilit y. Governor Christie has considered selling or leasing the racetrack to a private operator or closing it altoget her. The New Jersey Spor ts and Exposition Authority currently intends to privatize the racetrack, however a leasing arrangement to Jeffrey R. Gural of Newmark Knight Frank

has been held up in court. The privatization would include $100 million of improvements consisting of a new 2,250-seat grandstand built on the site of the current backstretch, which is expected to open by 2013. The existing grandstand would then be kept until at least 2014 so it could be used as an event space for Super Bowl XLVIII.

Physical attributes Like many racecourses in the United States, the main (dirt) track at the Meadowlands has a 1-mile (1,609 m) circumference; inside of this is a turf course (used by the thoroughbreds only) which is 7 furlongs (1,408 m). With a span of exactly 3 ⁄ 16 miles (302 m) from the top of the stretch to the finish line and a distance of exactly 1⁄ 16 miles (101 m)

from the finish line to the beginning of the first (clubhouse) turn, the dimensions of the track are considered “typical” or “standard” for an American racetrack. The main track is 90 feet (27 m) wide, while the width of the tur f course is 80 feet (24 m). The track is equipped to race at night and most of its races are at night. The Meadowlands Racetrack, including the main building, horse barns and site, was designed by the Philadelphia architectural firm of EwingCole (now known as Ewing Cole Cherr y Brott), who also designed a number of other track facilities around the world as well as Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia (with Populous). In the middle of the track is a lake, intentionally to resembling the state of New Jersey.
