Offutt Air Force Base served as the headquarters for the former Strategic Air Command (SAC) for more than 40 years, from 1948 to 1992. Operations moved in 1957 to an underground bunker with 24-inch-thick walls and base floor, 10-inch-thick intermediate floors, and roof that ranged in thickness from 24 to 42 inches. It also contained a war room with the capacity to fully sustain up to 800 people underground for two weeks.
Omaha is the nation’s 41st-largest city by population and covers 130 square miles. Since its first annexation of the town of East Omaha in 1857 to its controversial 2007 annexation of Elkhorn, Omaha has steadily expanded its boundaries by assimilating smaller neighbors. Today, what used to stand as separate communities are now known as neighborhoods or districts within the city of Omaha.

Father Flanagan established Boys Town nearly a century ago as an orphanage, and it now gives at-risk children and families the love, support and education they need to succeed. Boys Town serves more than two million individuals a year through a dozen sites around the country, a national hotline, publications and online resources, and a national research hospital.
The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge crosses the Missouri River between Omaha and Council Bluffs. The curved bridge opened in 2008, and its path spans 3,000 feet with Big Muddy only 60 feet below. A line marks the division between Nebraska and Iowa so visitors can stand with one foot in each state.

The Gerald R. Ford Birthsite and Gardens marks the location of the house near Hanscom Park where the former president—born Leslie Lynch King Jr.—lived for few weeks after his 1913 birth. The Victorian mansion owned by Ford’s paternal grandparents was razed after a 1971 fire. Dedicated in 1977, the site now includes a portico, pagoda, rose garden, and the Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center. 42

Since 1977, Gene Leahy Mall has been an oasis of green space and water in the midst of downtown, stretching from 10th to 15th Streets between Farnam and Douglas. A recent renovation improved water quality in the manmade lagoon, provided a new trail around the lagoon and brought in new lighting so all can enjoy for years to come.
Fort Omaha now serves as the North Omaha campus of Metropolitan Community College, but its diverse history dates back to 1868 and many of its buildings appear much the way they did in the 19th century. The authentically restored home of General George Crook, now on the National Register of Historic Places, features furnishings and decor from the 1880s.

Memorial Park, which covers 67 acres near 60th Street and Underwood Avenue north of the UNO campus, was created as a memorial to honor servicemen and servicewomen from the area. President Harry S. Truman dedicated the site in 1948. Today the park is also known for its rosebushes, flag-lined drive, winter sledding, casual warm-weather recreation activities, and annual summer concert and fireworks show.
The George and Sarah Joslyn mansion is officially named Lynhurst, but locals know it as Joslyn Castle because of its distinctive architecture. Located at 39th and Davenport Streets, the structure was built in 1903 to reflect the couple’s affluence. The Castle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and designated an Omaha landmark in 1979.

Papillion Creek is a tributary of the Missouri River with many branches and a watershed that encompasses more than 400 square miles in Washington, Douglas and Sarpy counties. Dam and reservoir projects have reduced flooding risks but have also come with some big bonuses for the community such as recreational areas and hundreds of acres of new wildlife habitat.
The historic Old Market district of downtown Omaha—framed by 10th, 13th, Farnam and Jackson Streets—features brick-paved streets from the turn of the century and period architecture that give the area a unique charm. Its diverse and dense mix of restaurants, retail shops, pubs, galleries and entertainment make it a great year-round destination for visitors and locals alike. 43
