DAVID BROWN President Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce

GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Fighting for Omaha’s Future david brown and the greater omaha chamber NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW there is an army fighting for the city of Omaha and its economic livelihood, growth, and development. This army is the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, ranked as a 5-Star Chamber, an honor only 0.5 percent of US Chambers hold. THE OMAHA CHAMBER FOCUSES ON A BOLD FUTURE FOR GREATER OMAHA BY PURSUING INNOVATION AND COLLABORATION TO FACILITATE THE GROWTH AND VITALITY OF THE COMMUNITY.

“Our mission is the creation of jobs and investments in Omaha, and that represents half of our budget,” says Brown.

“While we saw our share of projects that didn’t go well, we were blessed with great projects that continued,” says Brown.

The Chamber has lobbyists on staff in Omaha and Lincoln constantly fighting to pass legislation that promotes business growth. According to Brown, one of the Chamber’s main goals is to help make Omaha more economically competitive through legislation.

The reason some projects flourished can be contributed, in part, to early planning– most projects were planned back in 2007. Developments like Midtown Crossing, Aksarben Village, UNO’s new school of business, and hospital construction were completed due to timing and commitment, which has also helped keep the construction community working.

In 2004, the Chamber hired KPMG Accounting to analyze Nebraska’s business costs with the six states around them to compare their competitiveness. At the time of the analysis, Nebraska was at the bottom For example, in 2005, Pacific Life was of that list. The Chamber then worked with considering Omaha for a new location and the governor to decrease sales tax, lower told the Chamber they would make the income taxes, lower estate taxes, and deal project larger if the Chamber could help with other taxes that were hindering – Dave Arch, President/Owner make some legislative changes. Brown predicts Omaha will continue to see steady growth, and this prediction is partly based on a color-coded map of the USA that shows the unemployment rate county by county from 2007-2010. While the West and East Coasts are progressively getting darker and darker, the Midwest states are the lightest on the map, making the center of the nation an attractive place to be. “The Midwest is poised to be a new magnet for population and business growth because it is such a stable environment,” says Brown. Sporting a mixture of pride and gratification, he adds, “I like to drive down the street and see projects that we’ve worked on.” When members of his staff question whether they are making a difference, Brown reminds them that more than 20,000 jobs have been created in the Omaha marketplace by their efforts. The Chamber is striving to capture as much growth as they can by creating such opportunities. Among the goals of the Chamber is to see to it that those who grow up here are provided every opportunity to remain here in pursuit and fulfillment of their own goals. “All of our efforts are about creating opportunities in order that when our kids are old enough to decide where they will build a career, they will stay in Omaha.” m

leveraging human capital:

FACTS TO CONSIDER:

INTANGIBLE ASSETS INCREASINGLY ACCOUNT for a significant portion of an organization’s market value (up to 80%). In a global knowledge based economy, human capital is one of the most significant drivers of growth. Achieving success in a global knowledge based economy requires a new set of tools and resources that unlock and fully leverage an organization’s intellectual capital. We help individuals, teams and organizations achieve sustained performance.

We are an Omaha based firm serving diverse clients across industries and geography including Alliance Data Systems, American National Bank, Bridor USA, DocuLynx, infoGroup, Time Warner Telecom, UNUM, Woodmen of the World, and Western Union.

WHAT IS HUMAN CAPITAL? Human capital includes the unique skills, talents, and capabilities inherent in each individual in an organization and how these resources are deployed. Leveraging human capital refers to maximizing the potential within individuals, teams, and organizations. WHY IS THE FIRM NAMED AFTER ARISTOTLE? Over 2300 years ago, Aristotle theorized that it is the nature of an acorn to strive to become an oak tree. The acorn and the mighty oak tree remain an apt analogy for human potential. We help individuals, organizations, and team realize their full potential.

5

WHAT

IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE APPROACH YOUR FIRM TAKES? We combine deep and broad business

expertise with unique skills in the human element of organization performance. Research from renowned universities like Harvard, Penn, and University of Michigan inform our work and provide tools that allow individuals, teams, and organizations to engage and perform at unprecedented levels. 8

4

6

WHAT TYPE OF SOLUTIONS DOES YOUR FIRM OFFER? Our human capital solutions focus on strategies to achieve the mission, vision, and growth objectives of the organization. Coaching solutions accelerate integration and contribution of newly place executives and expand the leadership capacity of existing leaders. The common element in all services is a laser focus on fully leveraging human capital. WHAT SOLUTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR INDIVIDUALS? Many clients engage Aristotle Group for individual coaching; an empirically grounded, systematic, and goal-directed process designed to facilitate sustainable change. We also offer a unique program called Authentic Impact™ providing the opportunity to work with like minded leaders and experienced coaches in achieving expanded capacity. WHAT RESULTS DO YOUR CLIENTS ACHIEVE? The one word clients frequently use to describe their experience with Aristotle Group is transformation. Our empirically based tools and processes result in positive changes that are transformative and sustainable. perfect fit: finding the right Health Insurance

WHETHER YOU HAVE TWO EMPLOYEES OR 5,000, a small family-owned business or a mega-corporation, following these steps can help you find the right health insurance for your employees.

“If I created a company that was paying health claims, I would want it to be just like Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Responsive, accurate and a lot of credibility.

DEVELOP A MULTI-YEAR STRATEGY for your company’s health plan utilizing the expertise of your benefit advisor (Agent/Broker).

REVIEW YOUR PLAN WITH YOUR BENEFIT ADVISOR ANNUALLY to ensure your plan still fits your strategy. It is easier to adjust gradually each year vs. sizeable increases all at once.

“Wherever we have offices, our employees know they have a very comprehensive medical, doctor and hospital staff available to them.”

DEVELOP AN EMPLOYEE COMMUNICATION PLAN with your benefit advisor and health insurance carrier using multiple mediums for communication.

“In Nebraska especially, 100 percent of hospitals are part of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield network. There’s no question of, ‘Where do I go?’ ”

ENGAGE EMPLOYEES IN THE COST OF THEIR HEALTH CARE BY IMPLEMENTING A PLAN: Your plan should promote and encourage preventive/routine care by possibly waiving deductibles. Also, prescription drug plans should encourage generics. If your plan features office visit copays, set them high enough to discourage "unnecessary" use of services. Set deductibles and coinsurance at appropriate levels to ensure your employees share in the costs, but with appropriate coinsurance limits to protect them from catastrophic health care costs.

SIGNAGE

FASTSIGNS

®

Photo caption copy goes here providing a brief, concise description of the image provided or pertinent company information and must be twenty-five words or less.

What do your signs say about you?

make buying a sign simple ARE YOU SEEKING TO GET YOUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES NOTICED? Are you looking to capture attention and boost sales? Does your business need an entirely new image? Whether in need of a simple banner, or a complete visual makeover, well-placed, well-designed signs and graphics are vital to the success of your organization or business.

1

2

WHY DOES IT MATTER WHAT MY SIGNS OR GRAPHICS LOOK LIKE? Signs are the number one way that people learn about a business. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce tells us that 50% of shoppers said they first learned about a business through their sign. If your sign is serving as the first impression of your business to a potential customer, make sure it accurately and positively reflects your business, brand ororganization. HOW

DO I KNOW IF MY CURRENT SIGNS AND GRAPHICS ARE EFFECTIVE? Signage serves three

main functions—to inform, direct and sell. When assessing your current sign and graphics program, make sure each of these needs is being met. To ensure effectiveness, you should also consider basic sign design principles such as readability, visibility, legibility and noticeability. 3

10

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SIGNS AND GRAPHICS? Signs and graphics help with presence—people see and remember you. It costs a lot more to rebuild that awareness after marketing inactivity, than it does if you continue to maintain it at some level. Signs also strengthen a customer’s perception of your business and can even influence brand-switching.

4

IN THIS ECONOMY, ISN’T MY SIGNAGE PROGRAM A LOW PRIORITY? Even during a slow economy, advertising is crucial and it helps create a long-term competitive edge. Consumers may be taking a spending “time out”, but they are still out there. Dollar for dollar, no other form of advertising comes close to matching the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of the on-premise sign.

BANNERS SEEM PRETTY COMMON. IS THAT MY BEST 5 OPTION? Banners are great because they are flexible and easily changeable. However, there are many other appealing options that are just as effective such as architectural signs, full-color posters, vehicle wraps and attention-getting graphics that can be applied to walls, windows, floors and even ceiling tiles. Simply use your imagination! 6

WHAT ABOUT DYNAMIC DIGITAL SIGNAGE? The FASTSIGNS Dynamic Digital Signage program provides a single source solution for providing the right message to the right audience at the right time and place. From hardware installation to creating content to scheduling and storage to managing your entire digital signage network, we use innovation and technology to make the process simple for you.

Sales training alone doesn’t work… – Dave Arch, President/Owner

O

LLY LOCA ED OWN

®

selecting a sales consultant: WHEN A COMPANY IS READY TO MOVE BEYOND the annual “sales training motivational workshop” and get serious about creating an efficiently productive sales culture, they know intuitively that it’s a big commitment both in terms of funding and time. If you’re ready to make such a commitment, here are some questions you’ll want to ask to ensure you’re investing your money and time wisely.

1

2

3

WHEN WE CONSIDER SALES TRAINING, WHAT SHOULD WE BE ASKING OURSELVES? Sales training alone doesn’t work! Make sure your consultant offers to help you determine whether your issues can be solved by training. Hiring practices, compensation plans, your sales managers’ skills and how you bring new hires on-board are some of the other areas that play key roles in the success of your sales efforts. WE’RE CONSIDERING A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT WORKSHOPS. HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT’S BEST FOR US? Our experience shows us that the results from seminars and workshops don’t last. Choose a sales development consultant that offers on-going incremental reinforcement sessions with opportunities for practicing the skills needed to create true behavioral change in your sales people. HOW

CAN WE COST EFFECTIVELY TRAIN A GEOGRAPHICALLY DISPERSED SALES TEAM? Ask the

consulting company if they provide a blended learning solution for both classroom training and online/teleconference training for all members of your sales team. While you’re at it, ask them if they have the same blended learning for the sales managers too. (See Point #5 for more on this.)

4

WHAT

ABOUT MEASURING THE RETURN ON OUR INVESTMENT? Make sure that the consulting com-

pany holds themselves accountable to specific measurable objectives linked to the bottom line profitability of your company and has assessment mechanisms in place both to benchmark and chart the return on your investment. Ask for the results you wish to see in order to ensure a good fit. 5

WHAT

ROLE SHOULD MANAGEMENT PLAY IN THE TRAINING? Include sales management early in the

training consultant’s selection. Their skills in supporting their reps will directly impact the effectiveness of the training. Do inquire as to whether or not the sales consulting company supplies on-going training for the managers as to how best to support the sales training initiative. 6

HOW CAN WE AVOID BEING LOCKED INTO A COMMITMENT THAT FAILS TO YIELD DESIRED RESULTS? Since no business partnership can be a 100% guaranteed perfect fit, make sure there are “off-ramps” built into the agreement so that either party can declare a “no fit” at periodic stages of the agreement in contrast to a multi-year contract that is essentially “for better or worse.”

FACTS TO CONSIDER: We work with companies and individuals who are struggling to maintain consistent sales results, frustrated with their managers’ ability to train, coach, and mentor their direct reports, and are discouraged with each rep doing their own thing (without a unified sales process.) • Although locally owned, Sandler Sales and Management Training is part of a worldwide network of 200+ training centers throughout the United States and in eleven other countries. • With both our sales and management training approved for college credit, funding for the training can sometimes be found at least in part within the tuition reimbursement monies of a company. • We proudly serve First National Bank, The Maids International, Tenaska Marketing Ventures, and Tenaska Power Services as four of our clients.

We are helping hundreds of businesses grow through proven research.

upscale, affordable direct marketing solutions: VALPAK OF OMAHA IS LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED. We sent out our first mailing in 2005 to 50,000 homes in Omaha. Today we mail 180,000 homes in Omaha with more on the way in 2011. We mail 18 high income areas of 10,000 homes each for less than .03 cents per home. Everything we do is research based which is why our client retention is the highest in the market. We have many advertisers who have been mailing with us since the beginning. Valpak reaches more high income homes on a monthly basis than any other advertising vehicle in Omaha. 1

2

3

18

WHO IS VALPAK? We are a franchise of Valpak Direct Marketing Systems who is a division of Cox Enterprises in Atlanta. This connection allows us to provide research that is more accurate and deeper than most providers in Omaha. Because we are part of a network, your mailing is always on time and delivered as promised every month. 9 OUT OF 10 PEOPLE OPEN VALPAK. We know that it is usually the lady of the home in her kitchen or dining room. She goes through every offer and acts on 4-6 of the offers. Sixty percent share offers with others in the home. There are monthly National Sweepstakes, and locally there is a $100 check in one out of every 50,000 envelopes. COUPONS AREN’T MY IMAGE! Many partners who once told us those words have now been with us for 2, 3 and 4 years. Because of how Valpak targets only the most affluent homes, the Return on Investment that Valpak delivers is usually 3-5 times higher than any other advertising product in the marketplace.

4

5

6

RESEARCH? Yes, and lots of it from companies like Claritas, Scarborough and Simmons. We use eye tracking technology to perfect design, PRIZM profiling to target your best customers and prospects, and best practices to ensure a strong return on your investment. We can profile your database and apply it against any market in North America. Nobody else has as many tools to make your efforts successful. WE ARE ADVERTISERS TOO! Valpak sponsors UNO and Creighton Athletics, The Omaha Royals, and The Omaha Lancers. In 2009 Valpak was named The Omaha Food Bank’s Business of The Year for our charitable work. Valpak is very involved in the community, and we are on Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin. WHAT IF I HAVE LOCATIONS IN OTHER STATES? Valpak can mail to your neighborhood or to entire Metropolitan Markets anywhere in North America from right here in Omaha. Valpak mails almost 50 million homes every month in North America, and is the most recognized mail product on the market today.

One less thing to worry about.

just right: finding health insurance that fits IF YOU’RE IN-BETWEEN JOBS, RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS, moving off of your parent’s insurance, or you just want to be covered should anything happen, here’s a few tips to help you find the right health insurance plan for you:

FROM OUR CUSTOMERS: “The first time I flipped over my ID card and called Blue Cross and Blue Shield, I talked to someone with a beating heart, which was very nice.” – Quint Bowsman, Sales Rep., Regal Printing Co.

UNDERSTAND YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE NEEDS. 1 Ask yourself questions such as: How often do I go to the doctor? Am I taking any prescription medications that will continue? 2

3

ESTIMATE WHAT YOU’RE SPENDING ON HEALTHCARE TODAY, or what you may expect to spend in the future (Thinking about starting a family any time soon?)

DO SOME RESEARCH AND SHOP AROUND. Talk to a local insurance agent or trusted advisor, or research online to determine what type of coverage is best for you (high or low deductible, office visit costs or copay, coverage of routine care, etc.)

UNDERSTAND THE BENEFITS and know what your 4 out-of-pocket costs will be. Find out if there are exclusions or waiting periods. Make sure to read and understand the details. 5

6

COMPARE SEVERAL COVERAGE OPTIONS AND GET TO KNOW THE INSURANCE COMPANY. Is it a reputable, trusted company? You can research many companies via the Nebraska Department of Insurance at www.doi.ne.gov. DOES THE COMPANY WANT TO HELP KEEP YOU WELL? Explore what services your insurance company offers that address wellness and preventive service vs. just covering you when you are sick. This will lower your costs in the long run.

BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF NEBRASKA, an independent, locally based and communityoperated insurance company headquartered in Omaha, is committed to delivering the health and wellness solutions people value most. Among recent honors: Highest in Member Satisfaction among Health Plans in the Heartland Region from J.D. Power and Associates, 2008 Integrity Award from the Better Business Bureau, the Platinum Well Workplace Award from the Wellness Councils of America, and one of Omaha’s Best Places to Work two years in a row.

BRANDEIS CATERING HISTORY goes back to the bustling department store days of downtown Omaha to exclusive private soiree’s to catered office parties and picnics to receptions, reunions and fundraisers. Voted best catering company in the metro area four years in a row by B2B magazine, Brandeis Catering, under the direction of general manager, Joe Thallas, has become the premier catering company in Omaha with four exclusive venues.

As part of our service, we provide rectangle and round tables, padded banquet chairs, linens and napkins, china place settings and a basic centerpiece. We also provide audio visual such as standing podium and mic., projection screen, Wi-Fi internet service and ample parking.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR STAFF? We have a 2 unique team made of professional event planners, trained bartending and service staff to a full line of culinary support. Our service begins with our clients. We assess their needs with the event they are planning to the correct location and size. From there we continue with the client to detail the entire event with menu planning, room set-up specifics to executing the event to the conclusion. We want our clients to be assured we have covered the specifics so you can be a guest at our own event. 3

4

HOW

DOES BRANDEIS CATERING STAY UP WITH TRENDS IN THE INDUSTRY? In the past years our

business has changed a lot: competition, rising costs of labor, food pricing, as well as trends. We also involve the staff with local and international organizations in the industry as well as keeping up with monthly trade magazines and internet websites. HOW DO I PLAN FOR THE NUMBER OF GUESTS TO 5 ATTEND? There are a number of ways we can assist with this. R.S.V.P. cards are helpful for weddings, anniversary parties and such. Fundraisers would be based on ticket sales. The good news is Brandeis doesn’t ask for a guaranteed guest count until one week prior to the event. 6

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE BRANDEIS AS MY CATERER? Our service is second to none! We dedicate ourselves to quality customer service and food presentation. Our team is not afraid to go above and beyond to satisfy each of our clients. Besides being voted the best, we want to prove to the Metro area why we are. choose natural gas NATURAL GAS IS THE CLEANEST FOSSIL FUEL and inherently efficient: about 90 percent of the gas produced at M.U.D. is delivered as usable energy. Just 27 percent of the energy converted from coal to electricity reaches the customer. Natural gas – when utilized – emits 45 percent less carbon dioxide than coal and 30 percent less CO2 than oil on an energy-equivalent basis.

1

2

WHAT SHOULD CONSUMERS LOOK FOR IN APPLIANCES? Consider energy efficient appliances and operating costs. Appliances come with an Energy guide sticker that details operating costs. Gas appliances are less expensive to operate and are lower in CO2 emissions so they are a better choice for the environment. Energy Star appliances can save you up to $75 a year in energy costs. IF I

CURRENTLY HAVE ELECTRIC APPLIANCES, HOW HARD IS IT TO CONVERT TO GAS? Converting

4

5

to gas is easier than you think. Simply call your local utility company to schedule a visit from a service technician, and he can get you converted. Visit the M.U.D. website (www.livegreenthinkblue.com) for rebate offers on converting to natural gas. 3

26

IF I ALREADY HAVE NATURAL GAS APPLIANCES, HOW ELSE CAN I SAVE MONEY? Regular maintenance of your heating equipment every few months is a great way to save. It’s a good idea to leave a reminder sticker on your furnace. Dirt and neglect are the primary causes of heating and cooling system failure. Lowering your thermostat during the day can save $180 annually.

6

WHAT IS A CNG VEHICLE? CNG stands for compressed natural gas. There are more than 120,000 CNG vehicles currently in the U.S., and M.U.D. is introducing CNG into the metro for consumers. CNG can reduce automotive emissions of CO (carbon monoxide) by over 90 percent and greenhouse gases of CO2 by 20 percent. There are rebates for the purchase of CNG vehicles. WHERE CAN I PURCHASE A CNG VEHICLE? O’Daniel Honda is the first certified dealer in Omaha, carrying a Honda Civic GX, America’s greenest vehicle. AT&T has deployed nearly 800 CNG and hybrid electric vehicles with the goal of having over 8,000 CNG vehicles in the next 10 years. For those interested in a bigger car, try the Chevrolet Impala. HOW DO I FILL A NATURAL GAS CAR? A-1 HEATING is a certified installer of the PHILL HOME COMPRESSOR. This natural gas filling unit is available for private use and is installed in your garage through a gas line, just like a dryer or water heater. You fill it up at night, and it’s ready to go when you leave for work the next day. The district is actively pursuing a public fill station.

FACTS TO CONSIDER: If your central air conditioning unit is more than 12 years old, replacing it with an ENERGY STAR qualified model could cut your cooling costs by 30 percent. Remember, saving energy prevents pollution, which is something we should all aim to do. By choosing ENERGY STAR and taking steps to optimize the performance of your cooling equipment, you are helping to prevent global warming and promoting cleaner air while enhancing the comfort of your home. FACTS TO CONSIDER:

PVWLAW IS A BOUTIQUE TAX AND BUSINESS LAW FIRM dedicated to assisting closely held businesses and their owners. We combine experienced attorneys with top notch new talent to create an cost effective, top quality service. On its mission to provide innovative services to clients, PVWLaw invests its resources in developing lawyers and staff who understand tax, business, technology, and client service.

• PVWLaw has assembled a talented team of attorneys with tax, business, and financial backgrounds. We understand economics.

WHAT IS THE LAW FIRM’S PARTICULAR EXPERTISE? The law is complex. A law firm should be clear about who it serves and its areas of expertise. Be wary of any law firm or lawyer who is willing to be all things to all people.

• PVWLaw specializes in serving the needs of closely held businesses and their owners. PVWLaw is able to handle most of the business needs of the closely held business as well as the personal legal needs of the owners.

WILL I

• PVWLaw is dedicated to providing cost-effective client- friendly services, an interactive website, and informative blogs.

Very few lawyers will be able to personally handle all of a client’s business and personal needs; however, many clients prefer to have one contact who takes responsibility for overall service to a client. Find out what services will be personally handled by your chosen attorney. Find out how other services will be handled.

• PVWLaw has significant experience and presence in the industries of health care, construction, real estate, telecommunications, information technology, fitness, agribusiness, manufacturing, banking, education, professional services, and retail.

WHAT SHOULD I ASK ABOUT LAW FIRM PRICING? A law firm with business savvy and experience can tell you what it will cost to provide you the services you need. Ask whether the firm provides flat rates and estimates. Ask whether the flat fee is all-inclusive or whether there are extras. Many firms charge for photocopies, faxes, local travel, long distance phone calls, etc.

4

5

HOW DOES THE BILLABLE HOUR WORK? Be careful in shopping hourly rates. Many clients make the mistake of assuming that a low hourly rate will be less expensive than a high hourly rate. Most of the time, an hourly rate reflects experience. Often, that experience is specific to a particular practice area. An experienced attorney with a high hourly rate may well be less expensive than a less experienced attorney with a low hourly rate. HOW DO I TRUST A LAWYER NOT TO OVERCHARGE ME? Your lawyer should openly discuss how much your project will cost. It is sometimes difficult to estimate the total cost of a project but an experienced lawyer should be able to quote an appropriate range.

6

WORK WITH ONE LAWYER OR WILL I BE TALKING TO A DIFFERENT LAWYER EVERY TIME I CALL?

IS YOUR LAW FIRM TECHNOLOGICALLY INCLINED? Check out the law firm’s website. Ask whether you will have electronic access to documents. Does the law firm have a blog? An e-newsletter? Client webinars?
