WHAT ELSE IS possible?

Welcome, 2023! I love the New Year. New beginnings, new adventures, new possibilities, new choices. A blank canvas for us to perhaps choose something different and create another masterpiece along the journey of our lives.

As I look back over the past 30-plus years I’ve been in the publishing/media business, I realize where I am today is largely because of the choices I have made. Some of them created more ease and more joy in my life and business, and some of them did not.

We are all a work in progress and constantly evolving. There are hundreds, thousands—make that millions—of choices we can make at any given time.

We all are making choices. Every moment in every day there are choices to make. We are choosing what we wear, what we eat, what we do, who we do it with, where we work, how we nurture our bodies or how we don’t. We choose happiness and joy and we also choose sadness and struggle.

What I love about CHOICE is that you always have a CHOICE. If you choose something and it doesn’t work out or you change your mind, you can choose again. When I hear myself saying, “I have no choice,” that is a choice.

Gary Douglas, founder of Access Consciousness, encourages us to choose in 10-second increments. There is no right or wrong choice, good or bad choice. There is just CHOICE.

Ask yourself, “If I choose (fill in the blank), what will my life be like in a year, five years, ten years? (Or perhaps, in keeping with the above admonition, in the next 10 seconds?) Will this choice create more in my life or less?”

Only you can answer that question. My life continues to change by asking such questions. What are you choosing in 2023? And remember: If it isn’t working out or feeling light—choose again!

What else is possible (in the next 10 seconds, 10 minutes, months, years?) That begins with your next CHOICE!

WHO DEPARTED OPERA OMAHA AT THE END OF 2022, LOOKS BACK AT HIS 11 YEARS AS GENERAL DIRECTOR OF OPERA OMAHA AND HIS CAREER IN THE ARTS.

Omaha native Roger Weitz thought he was lucky to land an internship at Opera Omaha between his junior and senior year studying voice at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Not only was he happy to be at home, the experience also revealed a new career path.

“I didn’t love performing and I hadn’t really found my operatic voice… In the summer of 1998, Jane Hill was the executive director and Hal France was the artistic director. And for a summer I just embedded myself; whatever needed to be done, I was happy to do. I had a lot of different kinds of jobs, including with the company’s community engagement programs, which at that time involved lots of run-out performances,” Weitz recalled. “And it was that experience at Opera Omaha as a summer intern that really opened my eyes to the creative world of managing an arts organization.”

After graduation, Weitz went on to serve as the artistic administrator for Chicago Opera Theater from 2000 to 2007, as a Kennedy Center (Washington, D.C.) fellow from 2007 to 2008, and then back to Chicago Opera Theater, where he was general manager until 2011.

Then, in 2011, incredible luck struck again when the top position opened up at Opera Omaha.

“The opportunity for me to do this job—to run the opera company of record in my hometown—is so rare in the field. In 2011, I was looking to leave Chicago and this job became available and I applied. The stars were just lined up in such a unique and amazing way,” he said. “I was a general manager of Chicago Opera Theater, but to be the general director— which is really the not only the chief executive officer, but also the chief artistic officer—to get to run the company, to get to do that in my hometown where I had family and my wife and I were starting a family, that was incredible.”

Repertoire

Under Weitz’s leadership over the next 11 years, Opera Omaha was recognized for diverse and artistically excellent programming, and the company saw impressive growth. Ticket sales, season subscribers, the company’s endowment, and the annual budget all doubled in size. Plus, donations increased every year during Weitz’s tenure, and the company ended all but one year in the black.

Programming expanded, too, during Weitz’s 11 years with the company. Opera Omaha debuted 25 original productions including 19 Opera Omaha premieres and six world premieres. In addition, community collaborations, education and engagement programs, and the number of individuals served have all increased.

“Roger’s diverse talents and aptitudes have enabled the company to achieve prominent excellence, making Omaha a destination for opera,” Opera Omaha Board Chair Elisa Davies said, citing Weitz’s “outstanding leadership in making Opera Omaha artistically vibrant, relevant to today’s audiences, and fiscally responsible.”

“He will leave us in a strong position as we embark on our next chapter,” Davies said.

Weitz chose The Omar for the metroMAGAZINE photoshoot because it carries meaningful memories as the site of a 2014 special event that took place in conjunction with a new production of “Agrippina” by early-music specialist and conductor Stephen Stubbs and stage director James Darrah. “We went to the Omar Baking building because it had lots of unique architectural features with brick and wood and black and skylights and beams and all sorts of creative possibilities for us to incorporate production design—so that the guests, as they moved around the room, felt like they were in an opera. And we had singers in formal attire; the idea was that if they were walking next to you, you wouldn’t know if they were a party guest or if they were a part of the cast,” Weitz recalled, adding that the event garnered positive attention and the associated production signaled a creative evolution for Opera Omaha. “It was an indicator to me that I was on the right track.

Weitz said he sees his most significant professional accomplishments as “raising the bar on our productions inside and outside of the Orpheum Theater and expanding Opera Omaha’s civic footprint to be in true service of our community.”

Opera Omaha’s core programs beyond the Orpheum, its home performance venue, now include the Holland Community Opera Fellowship, the ONE Festival, Amplifying the Black Experience, Opera Outdoors, Student Dress Rehearsal, Opera In Conversation, Poetry and Music Project in partnership with Nebraska Writers Collective, Opera To Go, Classroom Visits by Artists, and more. Weitz’s tenure encompassed the introduction of all of these except the Classroom Visits by Artists program, which was in place when he joined the company.

The Holland Community Opera Fellowship launched in 2017 brings in entrepreneurial artists to help build reciprocal relationships with community organizations, schools, and health care and nonprofit service providers to support inclusive programming and workshops tailored to the groups it serves. In 2018, the ONE Festival (ONE being short for Omaha, NE) citywide event began its first year of celebrating new work and contemporary artists through multidisciplinary performances.

In 2020, artists Chabrelle Williams and Melanie Bacaling collaborated with Opera Omaha to create Amplifying the Black Experience with a vision to celebrate and introduce the multifaceted stories of the Black community through art, music and multimedia. This locally focused programming flourished under the leadership of Opera Omaha’s first Director of Belonging and Inclusion, Andrea Joy Pearson.

“Stereotypes about opera persist: that it is elitist, that you need knowledge of music or foreign languages to understand it, et cetera. We’ve tackled these stereotypes by striving to be one of the most relevant, accessible and innovative arts organizations in Omaha and one with a dedication to producing art and programs that resonate with our community far beyond the typical opera audience,” Weitz said. “Economic pressures, volatility and uncertainty compound issues around financial support for the company. Opera Omaha has wonderful, generous, and loyal supporters that have helped us weather these storms and I could not be more grateful for this community.”

One of those storms was the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It was the biggest challenge I faced as general director. How could we continue to serve the community when it wasn’t safe to gather artists, let alone perform for a live audience?” he said. “We found new ways to deliver programming online and adapted to find creative ways to rehearse and perform in ways that met our constantly evolving safety protocols.”

Finale and curtain call

As pleased as he is to see arts organizations bouncing back, Weitz announced in 2022 that he had made the decision to step down from his position at Opera Omaha, a move that took effect at the end of the year. He was motivated by personal reasons: his 11-yearold son, Freddie, has autism and a seasonal program under which he is thriving is based out of state. Weitz and his wife, Kate (see Common Senses cover story, metroMAGAZINE February/March 2022) will stay in Colorado part of the year so their son can receive the services that are working best for him. Weitz himself will still be involved with opera, he emphasized.

“I currently serve as a director on the board of OPERA America, the national service organization for the field of opera; I am active on several committees and am a co-leader of their new general directors forum. I will term out of OPERA America board service in June but plan to remain active with that organization,” he said.

He added, “I’m going to be looking for opportunities that I can engage with remotely.

I’m signed on as a project advisor for a new opera that is under development. I’m working with the composer and creative team, but it also involves a significant AI component. Now, that’s not my expertise; I’m more on the opera side. I’m going to be supporting that project and helping that come to fruition. And

I imagine, as I do that, that there may be lots of different kinds of projects like that… I love working with artists, I love the creative minds.

I love working with people who see the world in just a slightly different, more creative way.

I just love the creativity of it. So, whatever I do in the future, I want to continue to be supportive of working artists.”

…TO AN ORGANIZATIONAL LAUNCH, IT’S BEEN A BIG YEAR FOR SEVERAL ORGANIZATIONS THAT WORK TOGETHER TO SUPPORT PHILANTHROPY IN THE COMMUNITY AND PROVIDE A MEANS FOR ANYONE TO GIVE WITH EASE.

A lot of good things happened in the local giving sector in 2022.

In May, Pottawattamie County Community Foundation became Community Foundation for Western Iowa (givewesterniowa.org), reflecting an expansion of both services and service area since the foundation launched as Pottawattamie County Community Foundation in 2008.

By late summer, Community Foundation for Western Iowa had partnered with SHARE Omaha (shareomaha.org) to power SHARE Iowa (sharegoodiowa.org), an Iowa-local and regional philanthropic web platform to yield good in our communities. In preparation of the launch of SHARE Iowa and to support the larger footprint, Catrina Trabal became the new Community Partnerships Manager at Community Foundation for Western Iowa.

And late last year, SHARE Omaha’s founding executive director, Marjorie Maas, became the new chief executive officer of Share Good, the growing national nonprofit hub currently powering SHARE Omaha, SHARE Iowa and five other communities (Charlotte and Cape Fear in North Carolina; Greater Lynchburg, Virginia; Detroit, Michigan; and Middlesex County, New Jersey). On November 28, Teresa Mardesen became SHARE Omaha’s new executive director.

“SHARE Iowa is our initiative,” said Donna Dostal, Community Foundation for Western Iowa’s president and chief executive officer. “So, it is something that we are sponsoring and we have not only put our own investment in through the community foundation’s dollars, but also have sought additional funding through the Charles E. Lakin Foundation, Iowa West Foundation, Google, and the Iowa Council of Foundations to bring the SHARE Iowa platform to the nonprofits that we serve at no cost to them… It’s our program that we’ve taken on as a way to better serve and better support the long-term sustainability of our nonprofit.”

The new SHARE Iowa platform, like the SHARE Omaha platform that debuted in January 2019, offers the giving public year-round opportunities to support the nonprofits of their choice through monetary donations, volunteerism, or material good donations from shopping wish lists.

SHARE Iowa can be accessed online from anywhere. “We see this a lot, folks that have moved away from their home communities but still want to support them,” Dostal explained.

Many of the nonprofits that participate in SHARE Iowa were formerly part of SHARE Omaha or serve both the OmahaCouncil Bluffs metro area and surrounding Nebraska and Iowa counties, Dostal said.

“We’re connected locally, but then we also can maximize the power on both sides of the river… We wanted to give our Iowa nonprofits something that they can really own, and have the Iowa name and really be able to embrace that identity and that culture, and all things that make Iowa fabulous,” she explained. “We are so honored and so excited to be able to bring this additional resource to the nine counties in southwest and western Iowa.”

As the new executive director of SHARE Omaha, Mardesen said she continues to be impressed with the local giving spirit.

“People in the metro area have always been extremely philanthropic. Providing the ability to streamline caring/community service—in terms of dollar donations, volunteering and wish list items—is what the Share Good platform is all about. SHARE Omaha and SHARE Iowa pass on that benefit to nonprofits, and the community benefits overall in radical ways.”

In 2012, North Carolinian Kelly Brooks saw the need for a platform to easily connect community supporters to local nonprofits and founded SHARE Charlotte. In 2018, Brooks created Share Good with the intent to scale nationally as a web-based community engagement platform. In 2020, SHARE Omaha announced the acquisition of the Share Good platform.

“Share Good is the national hub for the technology and best practices and services to all SHARE communities across the country,” Maas said. “It’s headquartered out of Omaha and it’s a newly formed nonprofit organization… Share Good really was the uniting factor across the current seven communities, and those span everywhere from the eastern seaboard to Nebraska.”

In her new position, Maas will oversee expansion of the Share Good mission to even more communities across the U.S.

“Probably the biggest honor of my career was to launch and see SHARE Omaha grow,” she said. “I’m leaving but I’m not far away. I still very much get to see all the success and all of the activity and impact that SHARE Omaha gets to have along with SHARE Iowa, and I couldn’t be more enthused to really take the lessons and the case studies that we’ve learned here at Omaha and bring those across the country for more communities to experience… I love that the partnership between two neighboring SHARE communities can be a model for other places in the country.”

csi ANNOUNCES $46M CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

HOPE IS DEFINED AS A FEELING OF EXPECTATION AND DESIRE FOR A CERTAIN THING TO HAPPEN. UNFORTUNATELY, FOR MANY CHILDREN AND FAMILIES, HOPE CAN SEEM UNFAMILIAR. CHILD SAVING INSTITUTE (CSI) HAS A RICH 130-YEAR HISTORY IN THE OMAHA COMMUNITY OF PROVIDING HOPE AND HEALING TO LOCAL CHILDREN AND FAMILIES.

CSI originated in 1892 and was first known as an orphanage to safely house infants that needed a home, later becoming Omaha’s leader in infant adoption and pioneer of early childhood education locally. Today, the organization has evolved to meet the changing needs of the community— continuously providing hope and healing across its 15 programs to more than 2,500 children and families each year. From foster care to mental health services, early childhood education to an emergency shelter, CSI works to help children and families heal, grow and find hope for the future.

While deeply rooted in history, CSI is looking to enhance the future of care in the Omaha community as it plans to expand its services and physical footprint by launching a $46,000,000 capital campaign. CSI’s Campaign for Hope will allow the organization to continue to meet the dynamic needs of those it serves today, and over the next 100 years.

“The Campaign for Hope will allow CSI to continue to provide the critical services to more children and families in need on an expanded campus in a more deliberate, responsive and timely manner. Our community has a need, we are responding,” said Cindy Heider, Campaign for Hope Chair. CSI has diligently evaluated the evolving needs of local children and families including the rapidly growing need for pediatric and adolescent therapy, an expanded emergency shelter, supportive early education services and additional access to high-quality early childhood education.

To expand these services, CSI will nearly double its physical building space centrally located at 45th and Dodge Street. This two-year project will allow for an on-site mental health clinic to be added to the facility, a newly built emergency shelter housing 16 beds for youth, four additional early childhood education classrooms with a STEAM classroom, and innovative treatment childcare classrooms added within its early childhood education center to address the needs of preschoolers unable to attend traditional school environments.

In the past six years, CSI has doubled the size of its mental health services program to meet the growing needs of the Omaha community. Yet, CSI has a waitlist of over 150 children and youth waiting to receive imperative therapy and medication management services. A purposefully designed mental health clinic providing therapeutic space that is conducive to address trauma, promote safety and allow for healing is critical for Omaha’s young population.

CSI's current emergency shelter was originally built for young children, but the older teens who live there today have very different needs. The new emergency shelter will add robust educational services, a physical activity space and allow for youth to have their own bedrooms—all of which are essential to a youth’s successful physical, emotional and mental health.

As a leader in early childhood education for the last 50 years, CSI has evolved with the changing needs of children who need additional support. Unfortunately, there are many vulnerable preschoolers living in poverty and experiencing the impact of trauma in the Omaha community. Their ability to develop healthy relationships—a key element of academic success—is negatively impacted by their experiences and environments, putting them at risk of expulsion. The Campaign for Hope enables CSI to directly provide supportive early education services for preschoolers unsuccessful in traditional early learning environments to help them to heal and prepare them for kindergarten... and for life.

Additionally, the need for high-quality early childhood education continues to outpace the availability on a national, state and local level. Locally, families often experience a ninemonth wait, or even longer, in order to gain access to a childcare facility. The proposed expansion of CSI's early childhood education center would increase its licensed capacity by 25%, enabling more Omaha families to receive high-quality early childhood education services and prepare more kids for kindergarten.

The project directly addresses the growing needs of the community, while also enhancing the day-to-day experiences of children, families and staff members at the organization. CSI has hired Kiewit to serve as the contractor and TACKarchitects to design the facilities.

“CSI is excited to be closing out yet another year with hope. Hope for all children and families living in Omaha despite their current or past circumstances. Together, we truly can build a stronger community. However, we can only do this work with the support of those around us. Thank you for the decades of past support, and we look forward to moving into the future together,” said Jaymes Sime, CSI President & CEO.

As the city’s chief executive since 2013, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert oversees the operations of and financials for 13 city departments including the Mayor’s department and the Omaha City Council. She’s been described as “intense” by the media, and there’s no doubt she’s diligent, conscientious and hard-working. “‘The buck stops here’ is true,” she said. “Ultimately, it’s my responsibility. So, I take that role as chief executive very seriously.”

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert’s job is not easy. Being an elected officials means personal privacy is compromised. She strives to be media-friendly and foster open communication from her constituents, but that also means she’s often approached by citizens who want to talk city issues outside office hours, whether it’s at the gym mid-workout or during a run to the grocery store.

“Sometimes you just want to buy toilet paper,” Stothert said, with a laugh.

She also has to address unavoidable crises like windstorms that cause power outages or blizzards that cover the streets with copious amounts of snow.

“There are a lot of people that would prefer that snow is gone before it hits the ground,” she said, wryly. “The thing that I find the most challenging is when people don’t take time to understand what city government can do—and sometimes cannot do—and how quick we can get it done.”

As Omaha’s 51st mayor, Stothert is the first woman to hold the position and is now in her third term—another first— after being re-elected in 2017 and 2021. Her many accomplishments include reducing property tax rates, improving city services, fostering annexation, and increasing funding for law enforcement.

“I wouldn’t have run again if I didn’t think we were doing a good job,” she said. “I

felt like we have the best team I think Omaha has ever had in my office and our directors. We’ve seen such good progress in the things that are most important to me—namely, public safety, economic development, job creation, the city budget—which I’m all responsible for. I think we are on a good track.”

Stothert said she chose to run for reelection for an additional reason: she loves her job.

“I am not fatigued with this job at all. I’m not one of those people that has ‘Sunday-evening dread’… I look forward to coming to work,” she said. “I said when I became mayor that I represent all of Omaha; I don’t care what political party you’re in, the color of your skin, your gender, your age—I am your mayor and I will work for you. And the most rewarding thing is to help individual people on a daily basis, making their life in Omaha better.”

She may be considered intense, but Stothert also has a sense of humor about her experiences. She chuckles when she shares stories like an airline pilot announcing her as a special guest onboard but referring to her as a “gentleman,” assuming the Omaha Mayor (sight unseen) was “Gene” Stothert. She’s amused when sharing how people often seem compelled when they meet her to say either she looks better in person or looks better

on television. It’s all part of being a public figure, Stothert said, but she also has deep respect for the accompanying responsibilities.

“I often wonder why elected officials get into trouble, why they do stuff that is inappropriate or immoral or unethical, because you’re always going to get caught,” she said. “Everybody knows someone’s always looking.”

Stothert moved to Omaha in 1993 with her family and entered politics in 1997 when she was elected to the Millard Board of Education; she served three terms until 2009 including three years as board president. She was defeated by only 14 votes in a bid for the Nebraska Legislature in 2006. In 2009, she was elected to Omaha City Council, representing District 5 before her first mayoral campaign launched in 2012.

“Way back as far as I can remember, I just truly felt like everybody had a civic responsibility to give back,” she said. Even in high school, Stothert was a class officer, but she entered college to study nursing, not politics. She became a critical care nurse and ultimately served as head nurse at St. Louis University in Missouri. Nursing is not a common path to politics, but Stothert said the two career fields have commonalities from working with teams to communicating with a variety of people about issues ranging from routine to life-changing.

“I think I can apply those skills that I learned, especially when I was a head nurse, to what I do today. It’s a lot of thoughtful, critical decision-making. It’s a lot of getting all the information you can but at the end of the day, making the decision. And then you have to live with it,” she said. “And it’s doing a million different things. I multitask really well.”

Stothert has seen some personal highs and lows during her term, including the birth of grandchildren (her son and daughter are now in their 30s) and the death of her former husband by suicide.

“We all had a hard time when Joe died… You go through every emotion you can imagine; we all did. It goes from acute sadness to anger to frustration, I mean everything, and a lot of ‘Did I do something wrong?’ ‘Could I have done something better?’” she said. “We went through all of that. And yet, at the end of the day, it wasn’t any of our doing, and you can’t change what happened and you have to move forward. And that’s what we chose to do.”

Last spring, Stothert remarried. She uses Stothert professionally, but her married name is now Jean Louise O’Rourke, which she said she recently realized makes her JLO, like tabloid favorite “J.Lo,” singer/ dancer/actor Jennifer Lopez.

“I think that’s funny. I was just writing my initials down one day, and I went, ‘Hey, wait!’” she said.

She’s no diva, but Stothert said if she had to have an official theme song, it would be Petula Clark’s “Downtown” in honor of the current and future redevelopment of downtown Omaha and its great commercial, entertainment, residential, and park and recreation offerings. The song’s lyrics include “Things will be great when you’re downtown; No finer place for sure.”

“If I can fix something and make that day better for that person, that’s rewarding,” she said. “That’s the most special thing about being mayor: it’s on a local level… It’s helping people solve those daily concerns they have that make their life and quality of life in Omaha better.”

Table Grace gathers annually to share mission impact updates and music from a variety of musicians/singers as well as Table Grace’s own Community Choir, and a wonderful meal of hors d’oeuvres, desserts, silent and live auctions and more. Our goal in 2023 is to raise $75,000 to assist in funding operations of Table Grace Cafe and Mobile Grace Food Truck and offer job experience training stipends to 10-day trainees.

workplace culture: BRINGING PURPOSE to your people

Your individual purpose is a driving force that brings value to your life. It may influence your decisions and motivate you in certain situations. McKinsey Global Institute research shows that 70% of employees believe their jobs express their individual purpose. This is good news because employees with a clear purpose are happier and healthier and stay at their jobs longer.

Additionally, organizational purpose is elevated when employees are aware of their individual purpose. As you look at upcoming people initiatives, consider what your company and people managers can do to help employees find their purpose.

Try this three-step plan to roll out at your organization:

1. Introduce purpose. Some employees may not be familiar with the idea of individual “purpose.” It can feel vague or fuzzy. Managers can provide their interpretation and ask employees for feedback on what it means to them. Leaders can provide space to explore this topic through icebreakers, articles and reflection. This is a chance for leaders to be vulnerable and share their purpose, too. Charting time on the schedule for purpose tells the team that this is valuable.

2. Share purpose prototypes. Finding your “guiding light” may feel like a heavy task without some guiding material and examples. Leaders can provide templates, tools and assessments to inspire their teams. Plenty of free resources are available, so don’t let the budget hold you back! Managers can pose questions to get the group thinking about options. (“What is important in your community? What skills do you use for the greater good?”)

3. Apply purpose. Identifying individual purpose is not the last step. Leaders can challenge employees to apply their purpose at work. Could their purpose influence how they do their job? (“I am using my purpose to care for others when supporting our clients.”) Or could it affect the interest groups they join at the company? It may be helpful to show how leaders within the organization use their purpose as an example.

Chances are your team will embrace “purpose.” Additionally, candidates are attracted to purpose-driven organizations, which gives you an edge in a hot employee market.

Many assume that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is something that only applies to veterans who have experienced a trauma in the context of war or service. While PTSD is a significant issue for veterans—and significant attention should be given to the issue—in today’s article, my focus is on the type of trauma that many of us can experience in day-to-day life. That type of trauma is it friendship or relationship trauma. While trauma from relationships ending may seem obvious, friendship traumas can actually be a more difficult to deal with because they are often unexpected.

In recent years, I’ve experienced both a relationship and the friendship that ended in unexpected and hurtful ways. Those experiences have had a significant effect on other relationships in my life. As a result, I decided to become a student of this concept and share some of what I have learned.

Have a conversation with yourself about what your needs are and why you need to make a change. In the end of a recent friendship, I was stunned at the manner in which it ended. My friend of 20-plus years had been through a really difficult life period. She had retired early in hopes of being able to pursue some specific retirement goals that she had. Instead, her spouse became very ill shortly thereafter. My friend became a caretaker and ultimately lost her husband. At that time, a few other friends and I reached out, trying give our friend some special help through that year. After about a year, it was easy to see that our friend needed to make changes in her life and circle of friends to find a new path.

In my mind, the beauty of friendship is that we see who the other is and we let them be who they are. We don’t hurt them with the things we know they are vulnerable to. Acceptance, trust and support are the pillars of friendship.

Early in life, I was taught to see the relationships in my life as being on a wheel of concentric circles. At the very inner circle are those who are safest and most trustworthy. At any given time, it may be necessary to move someone from the inner circle to an outer circle. Sometimes, someone who is generally safe becomes less so because they are going through a difficult life experience. By the same token, there are those who are in the outer circle who may move in toward the center. By using the concentric circle approach, we can observe and be aware of our own needs as well as where others are in their life, and make good decisions about where people are in our life. By using the approach of the concentric circle in my life,

I have rarely felt the need to remove someone entirely from my life.

To be successful at maintaining relationships over the long term, we must be able to talk to ourselves about what is going on in our own world that is requiring us to make a change. Too often, instead of dealing with what we might need and how we are changing, we tend to start finding fault with the other person. We might even start hurting them with things that we have previously accepted. That really isn’t fair, and it is what leaves wounds as we make changes in a relationship.

Express gratitude for what was right. Before I make a change to any relationship, I seek to look at what has been right. I make a list of all the things about the person for which I’m grateful. This is hard to do when we are wanting to make a change, because we are afraid we will go to a soft spot in our heart and not make the change that we need; but finding gratitude and appreciation for someone is so important. We are doing them in injustice otherwise. If we spent 20 years as someone’s friend, there had to be a lot of things right about them.

Don’t tell yourself a false story to make the change you need be okay. I have seen in a variety of cases where someone comes to me and tell me all the reasons they need to change a friendship or relationship. If the comments are “he did,”“she does,” “he didn’t,”“she didn’t,” then the focus has become all the negative things about the other person rather than the fact that the person sharing the story simply needs a change or needs something different at this moment in his or her life.

In making changes to a friendship, a dramatic ending just isn’t typically necessary. Avoid making a big issue out of one email and using that as a way to angrily exit. Have the courage to have a real conversation. When you walk away in anger, telling yourself a story about the other person and being indignant, you miss the opportunity to grow personally as well as to leave the person who sought to be a friend without a wound.

Bless the path of others. When you make changes in your friendships or in a relationship, bless the path of the other. Know that no one learns anything from an angry departure, whether in silence or with angry words. Healing emotional wounds is not an easy process. By providing grace as you make changes, whether you are doing so because you need something different or because the other has changed in a way that doesn’t make sense for you anymore, you can allow healing for yourself and the other.

A stigma continues to exist with respect to mental health. The general reason that a stigma exists is because there is a lack of understanding of what a mental health issue really is. One of the misunderstandings that exists is an assumption that someone with a mental illness or mental disorder as defined by DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, a taxonomic and diagnostic tool published by the American Psychiatric Association) is legally incompetent.

DSM-5 defines mental disorder as follows: “A mental disorder is a syndrome characterized by clinically significant disturbance in an individual’s cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior that reflects a dysfunction in the psychological, biological, or developmental processes underlying mental functioning. Mental disorders are usually

associated with significant distress or disability in social, occupational, or other important activities. An acceptable or culturally approved response to a common stressor or loss, such as the death of a loved one, is not a mental disorder. Socially deviant behavior (e.g., political, religious, or sexual) and conflicts that are primarily between the individual and society are not mental disorders unless the deviance or conflict results from a dysfunction in the individual, as described above.”

To some degree, mental illness may be defined in the sense of being a social construct. There were times when mental disorders have included “hysteria” and homosexuality. To the extent of schizophrenia and manic depression, such disorders are less of a social construct, but there are a variety of mental illnesses that “come and go.”The DSM is revised every 5 to 7 years.

While the differences between mental illness and legal competence can pose some challenges in certain arenas, it is important to note that many people live with mental illness and have functional, competent lives.

Standards of legal competence vary. By way of example, the legal realm has a standard called “testamentary capacity.”This level of capacity refers to the ability of someone to make a valid will. As a general issue, this type of capacity requires that the person signing the will generally understand his or her property and who he or she is intending to benefit at the time of death. A testator is not required to be able to recite his or her entire history and a list of all state capitals. Clearly, it is possible to be suffering from depression or any of a variety of mental disorders and have testamentary capacity.

With respect to health care decisions, significant deference is given to the person whose health is affected. A person may be “incapable” of understanding and appreciating the nature and consequences of health care decisions, in which case an attorney-in-fact may act. The Uniform Law Commission is currently working on a Uniform Health Care Decisions Act to address issues that have arisen since such an act was initially promulgated in 1994.

Another area of legal competence is related to whether someone is incapacitated for purposes of having a guardianship or conservator appointed. The laws on this issue vary significantly from state to state. The law generally presumes competence unless it is proven that someone is not. A mental illness alone is never sufficient for an incapacity determination.

Mental health issues and legal competency issues intertwine in additional ways, and we will follow up on the same in later articles.

I’ve always been a risk-taker. Or, better stated, a risk “experimenter.” I’ve always been willing to try or experiment with an idea, no matter the work involved, to achieve the desired outcome. I love creating new ways to accomplish difficult things while ignoring obvious obstacles and sidestepping barriers. For me, this equals risk.

To be clear, I’m not a gambler. In fact, gambling makes me extremely uncomfortable. I’m not interested in cliff diving or jumping out of an airplane. But when it comes to forging a new path of possibility for myself, my businesses or one of my patients that hasn’t been done before, I will take the risk. I am all in.

Meet Erica

“Smiling, kind, gracious and hopeful” describes Erica in a nutshell. Referred by word of mouth, Erica’s chief complaint was, “I cannot breathe through my nose, and I don’t want jaw surgery. Can you help?”

Before sharing Erica’s story, it is important to say that I am also an extrovert and a true optimist at heart. My outlook 99 percent of the time is positive, and I approach each challenge with a systematic plan for success. I live life with conviction that I will do whatever it takes to accomplish whatever I am working towards for myself, my businesses, my family, and my wonderful patients. And did I mention education? I love, love, love to learn! Through the rabbit hole of continuing education, an open mind, and little fear of failure, my ability to help Erica was born.

Erica had a very narrow upper jaw and a severely vaulted palate. Quick anatomy lesson: the roof of the mouth (palate) is the floor of the nose. If the palate is vaulted/peaked, less air can get in through the nose forcing the individual to mouth-breathe. Mouth breathing is the opposite of healthy. When forced to breathe through our mouth, we literally get sick easier, have disrupted sleep cycles, feel

Erica’s upper jaw had also grown in such a way that the inclination and narrowness was forcing her lower jaw back, also trapping the airway. This diagnosis can be corrected with orthognathic surgery in which both the upper and lower jaws are broken, widened, and moved into a more forward position.

Erica’s case was a challenging, and she knew it. I explained the risks, benefits and alternatives of what was available and what could be possible working together. I approached her journey with a clear objective of helping her live life to its fullest, one beautiful breath at a time. No guarantees, but if Erica was willing, I was in.

Fast forward two years: one TMJ splint to stabilize her joints and jaw position, two orthopedic appliances to “widen” her maxilla (upper jaw), and full braces to secure her bite. We did it!

The experience was long, and I asked a lot of Erica. I fully understand that wearing appliances day and night and full braces with rubber brands, and prioritizing lots and lots of dental appointments is not easy. Erica always had a smile on her face and the best disposition you could imagine. She knew we were in this together and that her ability to breathe more effectively through her nose meant as much to me as it did to her. And I am happy to report, her treatment was a success!

I often write about gratitude, and this article is no different. I’m grateful to my parents who always allowed me to see the positive side of things and believe I could do anything. I’m grateful to Erica for trusting me to guide her on her journey to better breathing and improved health. And I am always grateful to my brilliant mentors who have advanced my education, allowing me to help my patients in so many ways.

In this season of Thanksgiving, I hope all of you are breathing easy, choosing health, and thanking someone in your life for something wonderful that has been done for you.
