“PET LOVERS” NON-PROFIT SPOTLIGHT ARTICLE & PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF PUG PARTNERS.

PUG PARTNERS OF NEBRASKA IS A 501C3, NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION COMPRISED OF DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE COMMITTED TO RESCUING AND RE-HOMING PUGS IN NEED.

PUG-O-WEEN! ALL PUGS DESERVE a chance to be loved and to love a human companion. The majority of rescue pugs come from what is called a puppy mill (a mass breeding facility). Pug Partners is dedicated to these special dogs and providing them with the life they deserve. Their main purpose is to provide all of their rescue pugs with a loving foster home, quality dog food, medical care, and any other need that they may have while under care. The ultimate goal is to place each pug into a forever family that will continue to show the pug love, attention, and provide the care that they each deserve. Pug Partners strives to educate adopters and the public about this wonderful pug breed. Although pugs are quite different from most breeds, they want to show people how amazing these small dogs can be, and how they make great companions.

Signature event: PUG-O-WEEN WHERE: National Guard Armory 72nd & Mercy (6929 Mercy Rd Omaha, NE 68106) WHEN: October 28th, 2012 12pm-4pm WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT? Omaha’s largest annual pug gathering! Fun for the whole family including, kids halloween games, raffle items, pug kissing booth, silent auctions, costume contests, pug races and local vendors! You won’t want to miss this fun event!

WHO CAN COME? Everyone! All breeds are welcome to attend! ABOUT PUG PARTNERS OF NEBRASKA Volunteers make it happen. They couldn't do what they do without all of their awesome foster homes, volunteers & donators. To date they have rescued 350 pugs. Their medical bills per pug are typically $350-$400. All of these pugs are spayed/neutered and upto-date on their shots before they are adopted. The adoption process starts with an adoption application on the website, followed up by reference checks, and a home visit by one of their volunteers. When they intake pugs, they first go to the vet, and then into a foster home. From there they are placed on the website for adoption and are at the adoption meet-n-greet events. The biggest health issue they run into with pugs are their eyes, followed by luxating patellas, ear infections, and allergies. It was due to Pug Partners that The Green Spot was created. They have been working together with Pug Partners since 2009. Two years ago during Pug-O-Ween prep the principals were discussing future plans, and discovered that they shared the same dream of owning their own store; soon they were busy going about the process of opening one. One of their greatest passions is rescue, therefore they are very grateful for the experiences shared through the efforts of Pug Partners, doing whatever they can to help all rescues in need with support through The Green Spot.

OCT/NOV HAPPY HALLOWEEN/THANKSGIVING

REPUBLISHED WITH PERMISSION FROM DOGTIPPER PUBLISHERS PARIS PERMENTER AND JOHN BIGLEY

halloween recipe: Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treat NOW THAT IT’S OCTOBER,

[we’re featuring a] special Halloween dog treat recipe. Whether they’re just for you to enjoy at home or whether you’re headed to a doggie party this month, these treats feature seasonal ingredients and, as always, just take a few minutes to make! Ingredients

whole wheat flour • 21/21/2cupcupspumpkin • 1/2 cup peanut butter • (organic if you have it) cinnamon • 21 teaspoons teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 cup water as needed •

The pumpkin you’ll need is canned pumpkin… but not pumpkin pie filling (which has too many spices and too much sugar). You’re looking for just plain, ol’canned pumpkin. Mine was in a 15-ounce can so there’s plenty more in the refrigerator now for the next batch of treats.

Each week PAEMag selects a cute, cuddly companion as our Pet of the Week! Winners are announced on PET & ANIMAL ENTHUSIAST Facebook page & our website.

To enter visit www.PAEMagazine.com LIKE US ON FACEBOOK 8 | pet & ANIMAL enthusiast

Mix all your ingredients except the water then add it sparingly. Depending on the amount of oil in your peanut butter, you may need the entire 1/2 cup…or not. The dough should turn out sticky but not dry; if it feels dry, you need a little more water. If it’s too sticky (if it’s sticking to your fingers), you need a little more flour. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface; I then used pumpkin-shaped cookie cutters but you can use any shape. I cut the treats out and placed them on a greased cookie sheet. I started subscribing to Martha Stewart Living recently so I was inspired to take a few extra minutes and get a little fancy with the treats (I think Martha would be proud of me!) I bought a set of tiny Halloween cookie cutters… and used them to make indented shapes on the top of the treats: Next, the treats were ready for the preheated 350 degree oven: After baking for about 20 minutes, they were ready to take out and cool. Be sure to cool

the treats completely before serving or refrigerating. And be warned: the smell of these treats baking is frighteningly good! You just might have to test one before giving it [out.]

halloween safety: TOP TEN

Tips for protecting your Favorite “Little Monster” No Scaredy Cats This Halloween: Top 10 Safety Tips for Pet Parents

Stay At Home Dogs, LLC

Attention, animal lovers, it's almost the spookiest night of the year! The ASPCA recommends taking some common sense precautions this Halloween to keep you and your pet saying "trick or treat!" all the way to November 1.

6

1

If you do dress up your pet, make sure the costume isn't annoying or unsafe. It should not constrict the animal's movement or hearing, or impede his ability to breathe, bark or meow. Also, be sure to try on costumes before the big night. If your pet seems distressed, allergic or shows abnormal behavior, consider letting him go au naturale or donning a festive bandana.

No tricks, no treats: That bowl of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not for Scruffy and Fluffy. Chocolate in all forms—especially dark or baking chocolate—can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also cause problems. If you do suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

2

4 5

Wires and cords from electric lights and other decorations should be kept out of reach of your pets. If chewed, your pet might suffer cuts or burns, or receive a possibly lifethreatening electrical shock.

8

A carved pumpkin certainly is festive, but do exercise caution if you choose to add a candle. Pets can easily knock a lit pumpkin over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned or singed by candle flames. Dress-up can be a big mess-up for some pets. Please don't put your dog or cat in a costume UNLESS you know he or she loves it (yup, a few pets are real hams!). For pets who prefer their “birthday suits,” however, wearing a costume may cause undue stress.

Call Today: 402-850-6089 brookeflamig@cox.net www.stayathomedogs.com

7

Popular Halloween plants such as pumpkins and decorative corn are considered to be relatively nontoxic, but they can produce stomach upset in pets who nibble on them.

3

Licensed & Insured ■ Home Visits ■ Pet Sitter ■ Dog Walker ■ Overnight Stays

Take a closer look at your pet’s costume and make sure it does not have small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that he could choke on. Also, ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, leading to injury. All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room away from the front door during peak trick-or-treating hours. Too many strangers can be scary and stressful for pets.

9

When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, take care that your cat or dog doesn't dart outside.

IDs, please! Always make sure your dog or cat has proper identification. If for any reason your pet escapes and becomes lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip can be a lifesaver, increaing the chances that he or she will be returned to you.

PET CONTEST FINALISTS

TOP 10 Quinn Alley

Quinn is a rescue. When she was spayed, she had so little fat on her body that the stitches wouldn’t hold. She is amazing because even though she lived her first few years in a puppy mill, she loves people. She also sits on her hind legs and waves her arms up and down while she smiles. It’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen a dog do.
