A cancer patient drives more than 310 miles to have one of the Midwest’s leading surgeons give her the best chance at a cure. This is just one example of the reach of the state’s leading surgical center, Methodist Hospital, which performs more surgeries than any hospital in Nebraska. In order to keep up with the growing number of surgeries, make room for technological advancements, and train and keep the best and brightest surgeons in our state, we must renovate and expand Methodist’s surgical suites. We are fortunate to have an anonymous donor who will match all gifts up to $20 million. Your gift can have twice the impact because whatever amount you choose to donate will be doubled. Please consider making an investment in excellence by calling (402) 354-4825 or by going to MethodistHospitalFoundation.org. Your gift will pay dividends for our children, our grandchildren, and beyond.

FROM THE
UBLISHER
ETTING INVOLVED. CATCHING THE SPIRIT.
Publisher Andrea L. Hoig Once again, we at metroMAGAZINE are proud to present the latest edition of The Event Book & Giving Guide which, paired with our website at SpiritofOmaha.com, offers our community a very powerful, comprehensive and constantly updated package providing detailed information on giving opportunities and needs related to local non-profits. Together, these products offer very comprehensive information on a wealth of charitable and non-profit organizations in the greater Omaha metro, including their missions and how one can get involved in the important work of each.
The Event Book & Giving Guide is one of our ways of “Giving Back” to the philanthropic community which we have heralded with such esteem, affection and admiration for the past 20 years. We trust it proves to be a most helpful tool to the members of that community and those who wish to become members. However, regardless of how useful our products may be, regardless of how proud we are of the commitment to excellence they represent, it is the institutions and individuals we are committed to serving, that truly epitomize genuine excellence: the many event chairs, volunteers and corporate sponsors that continue to enrich the metro with their spirit of Charity and Culture. It is to them that this endeavor is offered and dedicated, and we trust that both the content and style of this publication do their efforts justice.
As always this beautiful coffee table print edition includes an initial calendar of galas and fund-raising events for the upcoming year. It is my hope that our efforts continue to inspire many others to “Get Involved” and embrace the passion of the individuals and organizations featured in these pages, further contributing to the welfare of a community that does so much for so many.
Each of the charities featured in the pages of The Event Book & Giving Guide are deserving of your consideration. Each carries out a variety of extraordinary events each year, from luncheons to golf tournaments to special engagements to black-tie galas. The immense dedication and creative energy that is invested in these functions represents a mere fraction of the year-round commitment made by our friends and neighbors. It is an important part of our mission to honor that commitment by preparing a compendium of Charity and Culture that is intended to inspire as well as inform and educate. But the greatest honor I can imagine, which I hope will be the lasting fruit of our labors in preparing and presenting this publication, will be an expansion of volunteers and contributors, with an intention to assist these organizations in meeting and exceeding their goals.
This year’s edition will once again be featured online at SpiritofOmaha.com, which is continuously and robustly updated with our up-to-the-minute non-profit resource guides, and many additional resources and specialty services for upcoming events in specific categories, including (but not limited to): • Charitable Events • Event Planning featuring 365/24/7 Calendars • Ticket Purchasing • Photo & Video Store • Events Promotions • 101 Things to Love about the metro online • The Event Book & Giving Guide online SpiritofOmaha.com features an Event Planning Resource Guide along with tips for creating spectacular events from local experts.
I trust you will enjoy this 2013 edition of The Event Book & Giving Guide, and that it will prove as instructive and uplifting as we intended to make it. Most of all I trust it will once again serve to promote a successful and meaningful philanthropic season.
SpiritofOmaha.com features an Event Planning Resource Guide along with tips for creating spectacular events from local experts. That which remains unchanged throughout our line of products and services is our commitment to an elegant, distinctive, quality presentation which has always distinguished our approach.

VENT PLANNING TIPS
VENT PLANNING 101
• What can help transform a good event into a great one? For those who attend many events, there are plenty of opportunities to see everything – the not-so-good, the good and the great. When asked to describe what makes for an amazing event experience, guests often can’t quite pinpoint what it was that made the event extraordinary. It’s not coincidence that this often occurs because the event experience was so well orchestrated, so smooth and flawless, that guests were able to focus on their own experience, rather than any distractions. Attention to detail, creating spotless spaces, providing exceptional guests services with a seasoned event and catering staff as well as fully establishing the event theme through branded décor and signage, create a sense of immersion for event attendees. Remember, you’re not only planning an event, your creating an experience for your guests. That guest experience is paramount and enhances your ability to achieve your goals, whether they’re about setting a tone that encourages more generosity at a fundraiser, or creating a dazzling, memorable entertainment occasion. Great events focus on creating a total atmosphere where each guest is not only attended to in all aspects, but also immersed in the event theme and message, coming away with an indelible understanding of your event “brand.”
• Where do you find inspiration for events? Just as in other walks of life, every event experience can be an opportunity for inspiration. Attending events and making note of the things that “worked” for you can serve you really well. STEP Group advises travel as a wonderful form of inspiration for what they do as event planning professionals. Any form of travel allows you to be on the receiving end of the creativity utilized at new establishments and locales, where you may be taken outside of your comfort zone or permitted to take in new sights and experiences firsthand, and that holds potential for inspiration. STEP Group recommends following industry trend-setters on Instagram and Facebook as well as Tumblr and Pinterest, or simply window-shopping and checking out merchandise displays. You’re likely to find yourself inspired when you’re out taking in the latest styles, fashion and the themes that designers and marketing professionals apply to their establishments and merchandise. This is a great way to make shopping excursions pay off in more than one way.
• What’s a good host/hostess gift? When it comes to host gifts, STEP Group encourages supporting Omaha’s local businesses and thinking outside the box. Share a gift of artisan chocolates from Chocolatier Blue perfectly paired with a hand-selected wine from Brix. Note cards are an essential for any great host; RSVP in Rockbrook will help you customize chic stationery made-to-order. For the host with a pooch, consider gourmet doggie treats from Three Dog Bakery in Midtown Crossing. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best: treat your host to dinner for two at their favorite restaurant. A few other STEP Group suggestions: Grey Plume (farm-to-table cuisine in Midtown Crossing), Dante (wood-fire pizzas at Shops of Legacy), Jams (the Omaha standard at 78th & Dodge).
• What are the on-trend event color palettes for 2013? Curate with color when styling an event. Out with the old and in with the new, Monaco Blue has replaced Tangerine Tango as Pantone’s “Color of the Year.” Monaco Blue is the look to incorporate in 2013 and STEO Groups encourages having fun by working this hue into a first or second quarter 2013 event theme. This striking blue looks great with a variety of other colors and is perfect for incorporating into corporate productions, gala fundraisers and spring and summer birthday soirees. Don’t forget other colors like greens, poppy red, lemon zest, African violet and aubergine as these will be in for 2013. And you can never go wrong with classic black & white or sleek metallics.

• More about how Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook play a role in event planning. Social media is critical for modern events. You don’t want to miss an opportunity to share event details online for those who want to plan ahead or remember the moment, and especially for those who missed out. Pinterest is great for compiling inspirations onto boards that reflect your taste and style. This can include event elements like a “tablescapes” board to capture centerpiece ideas or an “invitation” board of creative ideas for sending guests the first glimpse of your event theme. During the initial stages of your event, you may want to create an accompanying “Facebook Event” to promote and update your friends and fans on event details, allowing them to “export” the event from Facebook to their iCal or Outlook calendar to keep them notified of event updates. It’s terrific for getting the word out as guests invite their friends. (People are often bombarded by Facebook Events, so be sure the title of yours clearly identifies your brand, company or organization and notes the real-life event title – keeping your event brand consistent online and in the real world is key! You want to share your experiences as they’re happening, so be sure that you and your staff snap pics with your mobile devices and upload them to Instagram with different filters. Don’t forget to use the event hashtag (Example: #BIGevent, #gala2013) and toggle “Share to facebook/twitter/tumblr” to reach your friends and followers.
• After months of planning, how do we make the most of our event while in the moment? This is where hiring an event professional really pays off. You want to make the most of your event by being present, connecting with your guests, your clients, your employees and/or supporters. Hiring professional event producers allows you to outsource the details of the event (including delegating the stress to someone other than you and your team!) Hosts realize the full potential of your event production services when you are able to calmly ensure that event attendees are enjoying the experience while sharing that experience with them. It frees you to be on-task and on-point delivering your message.
• What’s the best way to ensure staying on budget for an event? Don’t underestimate event expenses and make sure to establish your objectives prior to any planning. Here’s some important basics to start with: - Why are you having the event? - Who are you trying to reach/attract/entertain? - What can you afford? If you are trying to raise money, it’s important to keep costs down, however, you don’t want to sacrifice the guest’s (and prospective donor’s) experience. After you decide your event goals and look at your budget, concentrate on what elements of the event are critical: perhaps catering, entertainment; then others that are necessary or nice: free drinks, compelling invitations, etc. This can help you decide how to spend. Once you have your budget in mind, consult professionals you may already have relationships with. Not just event producers, but graphic designers, restaurants, and venues to determine which services and features they offer that will suit your event presentation goals while matching yhour budget.

EVENT TYPE:
Gala Fundraiser
Fashion Show
WHAT'S INVOLVED:
Fundraisers take the form of many types of events nowadays: afternoon teas, luncheons, black tie evening affairs; so it’s important to check the scheduled time of the event before determining your look.
Omaha Fashion Week, local boutique’s trunk show, designer collection unveiling, other fashion show fundraisers, etc.
ATTIRE:
Evening: Event invitations will mention “black tie” if it’s a formal event.
Fabulous. This is the opportunity to let your personality and style shine. Be vibrant and take risks; seldom in our fair city do you get the chance to make a fashion splash. If you’re headed out to a red carpet fashion show like Omaha Fashion Week’s Saturday Night Finale show, go all out. If you’re headed to an avant garde show that features a singular designer, anything goes, so long as it’s expressive of you and your fashionaspirations! Keep in mind, this is a great time to try out new, local and emerging fashion designer talent to have a look custom made for you.
Luncheon/Daytime: Take cues from the invitation (if no attire is listed) – is it a “backyard BBQ” or plated luncheon? Consider the organization who is hosting – is it an affair for the Nebraska Humane Society (with an open invite to man’s best friend?) or a Women’s Fund leadership event? You will want to be sure you’re seasonally appropriate as well and your shoe choices honor the venue’s terrain.
FOR HIM:
Formal/Evening? Suit. Luncheon? Suit or sport coat/jacket and slacks. Summer/outdoor event? Linen suit, if you don’t mind the inevitable wrinkles. Appropriately complimentary shoes a must.
At a fashion show, you’ll see everything on men: from Converse All-Stars with denim and a jacket to sleek designer suits. Point being: be bold and be yourself – just make sure what ever the look, it’s well-tailored. Also – if you’re really into looking chic, consider a new hairstyle or experimenting with styling products to take your look to the next level.
Black tie? You guessed it: black tie (tuxedo) – you can get fashion-forward if that’s your taste and find a sleek, modern tuxedo suit.
FOR HER:
Formal/Evening? step up a cocktail look with luxe fabrics, noteworthy accessories with sparkle, high heeled pumps if you dare. Luncheon? Check the invite and consider a wrap/shawl/jacket as indoor daytime events may be chilly with climate control. Hemlines vary and pantsuits are acceptable (depending on event theme).
If you’re walking the red carpet, remember this: you can act like fashion royalty! Let your best pieces shine and you can even try playing with “more is more.” Have a statement necklace? Pair it with a bold frock and sky high heels. Is your hemline high? Rock it, if you’ve got it! Remember – the best bold looks become fashion wins when they fit your personal style, physical form and flatter your best assets.
Summer/outdoor event? keep it seasonally appropriate and don’t make the mistake of wearing heels to an event on grass! If you need/want the height, try sleek wedges.
WHAT TO AVOID:
NO JEANS. Also, consider the weather – no velvet in the spring/summer, no linen in the winter. With galas/fundraisers running the gamut of formats, there is never any shame in calling the point of contact (either at the hosting organization or the chairperson) to inquire!

Don’t be something you’re not and be sure it’s you that shines through! Yes, we’re talking about “over the top” attire for a fashion event, but if you’re not into taking risks, keep it simple and make one statement at a time – color-block pumps, fuchsia lips, colorful eye shadow huge earrings – and keep the rest simple & clean. 2013

VENT PLANNING TIPS
Our thanks to the event professionals at STEP Group for their assistance in preparing these Event Planning resources
Art Opening
Cocktail Party
Corporate Function
Gallery show, opening of a museum exhibition, Bemis Center Annual Art Auction, Old Market or Benson First Friday gallery crawl, etc.
Holiday party, open house, campaign event, engagement party, pre-party/cocktail hour, etc.
CEO visiting town, corporate awards ceremony, big presentation, important sales pitch
A seriously cool event to attend, know that you’ll see everything at an art event. What you wear should suit the vibe of the venue and the style of art on display. Studio spaces in a hip, downtown neighborhood will call for a very different look than an opening at the Joslyn Art Museum. Keep your look “artistically inclined,” and as with a fashion show, let your personality be your [style] guide.
A cocktail party is often held during a transitional time between work and dinner, social hour prior to another evening event or just a time to mix and mingle in a freely social environment. Take note of the event – is it a holiday party (i.e. you can get away with more sparkle and color), is it on a Fri. or Sat. night where you’ll be headed out on the town after (in which case, go ahead: be sexy!)
Easy: wear a suit.
Mix it up – Jackets are always sleek and can be paired with jeans in this instance. Though be mindful of the venue and event timeframe – are you attending a museum exhibition? If so, leave the jeans at home but feel comfortable in a sport coat or sans tie.
Read the invite: Is “Jacket Required”? If so, follow suit (pun intended). Feel free to wear a suit jacket/blazer with sharp complimentary slacks, dark/sleek denim (only if it’s a more casual affair) or a suit without a tie. Add colorful socks or a pocket square if you’re feeling fashion-forward.
Pretty simple: suit & tie. If you’re in a creative industry, a colorful pocket square and/or stylish socks may be appropriate. Take cues from your boss/peers, but don’t hesitate to be a fashion overachiever and dress for the position you want (not the position you have)!
Note the theme here: Again, take a lead from the invite, the venue, the art or hosting organization. You’ll want to be conscientious of your surroundings – are you going on an art crawl (i.e. will you need flats or shoes you can walk in?) If you’re indoors, maybe you’ll want a wrap rather than having to carry a jacket around with you. Make your purse easy to carry while you mix & mingle, keeping hands free to hold your cocktail and to purchase art!
Subtle, yet sexy & sophisticated, the cocktail dress can take many forms. Most importantly, select a style that compliments your features. Short dresses are welcomed, bare legs or sheer hoes are both excellent options with heels. If you go bold with a bright color, keep the rest of the look simple, while if you choose to go with a LBD, play with accessories or a bold lip.
Power suits in dark colors still reign supreme when it comes to stepping up your corporate clout. Keep hair sleek and simple and makeup fuss-free. Select a purse or laptop case that complements your look – accessories matter! Jewelry at a minimum, but you might want to play with some color or shine, if you feel it’s appropriate. If you go with color in a blouse or jewelry, be sure it compliments your skin tone and highlights your facial features as you’ll want to be sure when you’re hobnobbing or presenting, attention is on your message and professional conduct.
Back to the jeans issue… Be cautious if you choose to go with your skinny denim – pair it with a top that makes you look like you’re shopping for art (not for groceries). Don’t forget jewelry or other artistic accessories. Don’t be high maintenance with hair & make-up – let the art be the center of attention.
It’s always better to err on the side of over done than under done. Also, you may inquire of the host/guest of honor to be sure the outfit you have in mind is appropriate (also, it’s a convenient way to avoid a “who wore it better” moment in case you were planning to wear same thing!)
Avoid a poor fit – tailor your suit so well that no matter the brand or price tag, you look like $1M.Ladies: NO open-toe shoes, colored suits, separates, low cut blouses or buttondowns that pull. Get thee to a tailor and have that suit fitting flawlessly!

Service-learning refers to “helping” activities undertaken by students as part of the regular school curriculum. Servicelearning offers young people opportunities to try new tasks and to take on new roles. It is active learning in the familiar environment of the local community. (And often, it gives you a terrific chance to compete in job markets after graduation.)

Ask some volunteers why they work without pay. They’ll probably say they work for the fun of it. Yes, volunteering is usually fun. Remember, volunteers have chosen their jobs carefully and are appreciated for their contributions. They’re doing something for the love of it. Volunteer at a music festival and you’ll meet people who love music. Volunteer at a hospital and enjoy the rewards of giving comfort. Volunteer with a community theatre and exercise your talents- not just in acting but in lighting, sound, construction, directing, costumes, makeup, sales and promotion.

ET GOOD GROW
EVERYONE HAS A ROLE TO PLAY IN HELPING OMAHA GROW by Michael Leighton, CEO, Omaha Community Foundation
E
S
VERYONE HAS A ROLE TO PLAY in helping Omaha grow – in making this a stronger community and an even better place to live. Our role is to help you. We see charitable gifts as investments in the future of Omaha. And we immerse ourselves in every aspect of philanthropy – local needs and nonprofits, philanthropic trends, tax codes, financial tools – to help our donors invest as wisely as possible. The greatest service we offer our donors is simplicity. When you open an account with the Omaha Community Foundation, we smooth the path between our donors and their charitable goals. We keep track of the financial details – much like a bank account, with online access and statements – and we make sure our donors have all the paperwork needed come tax time. We also help donors receive the greatest tax benefit from their gifts, whether that involves donating property or appreciated stock, or simply making a deposit to a Foundation account whenever it makes the most sense financially. Making an anonymous donation is easy, too. This flexibility allows our donors to be more thoughtful about their giving. They can make a donation and qualify for the tax benefits, then decide later what they would like to accomplish with it. The Foundation has been active in the charitable community since 1982, and we’ve invested more than $855 million in Omaha and southwest Iowa. We truly understand local nonprofits and what they’re trying to accomplish in the community. No matter what type of account or fund our donors choose, we provide ongoing guidance. Think of us as a charitable support staff. You tell us what you want to accomplish – or just what you care about – and we’ll help you focus your resources. We don’t mind the footwork or the paperwork. We research charities for our donors and help them compare various organizations and approaches. If it makes sense, we connect them with other donors who share the same interests. And we keep our donors updated on relevant local, regional and national news.
TRENGTHENING OUR NONPROFITS We believe that strengthening nonprofits strengthens the whole community. Simply put, a good nonprofit organization has a strong board that hires capable staff that runs quality programs. The board and staff ensure that capacity is constantly being built and is never stagnant. This solid and growing organization is supported by donors and volunteers. A community will be more prosperous and peaceful when its nonprofit sector is made up mostly of these kinds of mature groups, which feed the hungry, put on arts events that delight and challenge, nurture youth in afterschool settings, and provide a myriad of other services that we all use. To do this, we must build capacity in our nonprofits. Capacity is the infrastructure that an organization relies on to fulfill its mission. This infrastructure encompasses a wide range of capabilities, knowledge and resources – such as technology, board development, financial management and fundraising – all the things that strengthen a nonprofit’s ability to have greater impact. In reality, all nonprofits are either continuously building capacity or are remaining stagnant. The former is the model for continued success. The latter can result in the slow and painful death of a nonprofit. In 2010, the Omaha Community Foundation launched a Nonprofit Capacity Building Initiative. We also changed the focus of the Fund for Omaha, our largest competitive grant program, into the “Greatest Need Grants to allow applications for not just the traditionally funded project-oriented grants, but also operational and capacity building grants. Through these efforts we are hoping to encourage other funders to focus more on what will help nonprofits best fulfill their mission and achieve organizational success. If you are interested in learning more about capacity building, you can read our latest online issue of Connect the Dots – a series that serves to raise significant issues for our community and provoke discussion. If you have questions or want to discuss nonprofit capacity building, contact us at community@omahafoundation.org or visit omahafoundation.org/improving-our-community.

first home-town charitable agency?
In 1875, leaders of eight local churches decided to pool their resources in order to create a more efficient response to the needs of the many children and families who came to their doors pleading for help. The historical record tells us the first activity of our then-named Christian Workers Association was a Thanksgiving dinner attended by more than 300 “. . . newsboys, bootblacks and other children of the more neglected class.” For many decades our agency was the primary provider of social services in Omaha. Today Heartland Family Service continues to help the most vulnerable individuals, children and families of our community. Our focus on professionalism leads us to continually search for effective methods and measure the most appropriate outcomes to improve our programs. With a rich history of service and 136 years of proven success, we have earned a reputation as a leader in the human services field — identifying societal trends, anticipating client needs and creating solutions for the most urgent human challenges to our community.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Heartland Family Service Friends Guild - women who plan and conduct annual events and activities to support our clients.
21•40 Heartland Young Professionals - young adults who want networking, volunteer and professional development opportunities through service and advocacy. Junior Friends - high-school teens who want to deepen their commitment to volunteerism. Program Activities - individuals and groups who help with daily operations of the programs. One-time and repeating activities available, times negotiable.
We are driven by the success of the people who ask for our help: women and children from abusive homes, youth who can be redirected from a life of crime, families who face hardship and homelessness, individuals who struggle with chronic mental illness and seniors who find healthy lunches and friendly companionship at our senior center. We are challenged by the realization that the need is far greater than the resources, yet encouraged by the compassion and generosity of those who are willing to help as volunteers and donors.
Providing Solutions for Community Problems: Child Abuse • Domestic Violence • Juvenile Delinquency • Poverty & Homelessness • Early Childhood Education • Addictions • Mental Health • Community Services and Centers
We are grateful that Heartland Family Service was founded in this community.
When life improves for one of us, life improves for all of us. We all matter.

EARTS UNITED FOR ANIMALS “Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill animal shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization dedicated to the relief of suffering.”
H
EARTS UNITED FOR ANIMALS is a no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization dedicated to the relief of suffering. The shelter is located on 65 acres between Nebraska City and Auburn, Nebraska, just one hour south of Omaha. Founded in 1993, Hearts United has grown over the years to house 400 dogs and 25 cats while they await adoption. Those who cannot be adopted stay forever as Sanctuary Sweethearts. The shelter and sanctuary has attracted global recognition for its outstanding programs and services. Hearts United specializes in the rescue of dogs from puppy mills, where they are kept confined for years in small wire spaces freezing in the winter and sweltering in the summer with no human interaction or kindness. Hearts United for Animals has rescued over 10,000 dogs from puppy mills.
GIVING OPPORTUNITIES: Your donations make the difference between life and death for many dogs and cats that are injured and in need of immediate rescue and care. Hearts United for Animals receives no government funding and relies solely on the generosity of the public to rescue dogs from puppy mills, city pounds, as well as hoarding and abandonment situations. Donations also help with our low cost spay/neuter clinic and emergency medical funding for pets of low-income families.
Hearts United for Animals is home to Tia’s Place, a refuge for pets of families fleeing domestic violence in Nebraska. Often family members are reluctant to leave very dangerous situations because domestic violence shelters for people will not accept pets and the people will not leave knowing that their pets would be in grave danger if left behind. Hearts United houses these pets at no cost until the families are able to get back on their feet. This program has saved the lives of many Nebraskans in need and the lives of their pets as well.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers are always needed to help walks dogs and socialize dogs just arriving from puppy mills. Many volunteers come from the Omaha area to help give the dogs and cats a little extra love and that love goes a long way to enrich the lives of the animals. In the summer the dogs make trips via the Canine Caboose to one of several play yards to enjoy the great outdoors. In the winter they have big indoor rooms to romp around with their newly found human and canine friends. Please contact lori@hua.org if you are interested in volunteering. We must warn you, it can be addictive! Many of our volunteers say visiting HUA and helping the animals is by far the best part of their week.
The HUA low cost spay/neuter clinic, serving families of limited means, has altered over 10,500 animals since its inception in 2003. The clinic has prevented an estimated one million puppies and kittens from being born into conditions of suffering and overpopulation. Hearts United for Animals provides emergency medical assistance funding for low-income families who could not otherwise afford to save their pets lives when critically ill. Situations can be as small as providing antibiotics or pulling a tooth, or as large as providing surgery for cancer, hip dysplasia or herniated discs. Often times the elderly and indigent have only their pets to rely on for companionship, and they are so very devastated and heartbroken when they cannot provide necessary care.

IDLANDS MENTORING PARTNERSHIP
M
“Because Mentoring is a results-oriented strategy that improves the lives of young people, the staff and Board of Directors of the Midlands Mentoring Partnership are dedicated to improving the number and quality of mentoring matches in our community.”

EBRASKA CHILDREN’S HOME SOCIETY
“ Through 9 statewide offices, Nebraska Children’s Home Society provides safe and loving care to children of all ages. Services include pregnancy, parenting, adoption and post-adoption services; foster care; teen parent services; community outreach; and early childhood programming.”
T
ALK ABOUT UNIQUE! The Nebraska Children’s Home Society has the distinction of being the only agency in the nation that has never charged fees for its adoption services for more than 119 years. It primarily relies on donors to continue this tradition. While adoption is a big part of its mission, it is only one among many child-focused services the Children’s Home offers at 9 locations across the state. In fact, about 2 out of every 3 women who turn to NCHS for assistance with an unplanned pregnancy receive services to support them as parents. The organization offers no-cost pregnancy services, foster care, oneon-one services to young parents, early childhood education, and teen programs that focus on prevention of pregnancy and life skills development. Since 1893, thousands of children, women and families have relied on the Children’s Home for help at times of crisis and hardship. Without the Children’s Home many children would remain in homes where they are abused, neglected or unwanted; teens and young women with unplanned pregnancies would be without help in making safe decisions for their unborn children; and couples would lack expert guidance in navigating the adoption process. But fortunately, thanks to continued community support, the organization continues to grow as a statewide resource for children and families. In 2009, the organization opened the Children and Family Center in North Omaha to help parents struggling with poverty, challenges in completing their education, and difficulty finding quality early childhood education services. The Children’s Home increased the number of foster children in its care by 81% over the previous year and 223% over two years. NCHS provides services that help safely reunify children with their biological families, and if that is not possible, children are adopted by their foster parents. With a firm commitment to the belief that a child’s needs must come first, Nebraska Children’s Home Society, engages in advocacy for vulnerable and at-risk children. All children deserve safe and loving care. Because 60% of the Children’s Home budget depends on the generosity of donors, assistance is needed. Get to know the Children’s Home on Facebook: facebook.com/nebraskachildrenshomesociety

MAHA COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE “We Enrich Our Community through Great Theatre.”
T
HE OMAHA COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE is the largest community theatre in the nation! Founded in 1924, the visionaries who started the Playhouse set our course to be different from the typical community theatre. Now in our 88th season, the Omaha Community Playhouse has taken community theatre to a level previously unachieved and unimaginable. From our national-caliber productions to a magnificent state-of-the art facility, Omaha’s playhouse has been the product of hard work, creative talent and continued generosity. Our professional staff works side-by-side with emerging theatrical talents and thousands of community volunteers both onstage and backstage to produce year-round entertainment. We are also supported in this mission by community individuals and corporations who consider their generosity an investment in the culture of our city. This partnership between OCP and the greater Omaha community has given Omaha a unique position in the world of community theatre. While we celebrate the success of this theatre season after season, we remain always mindful of the community volunteers, local corporations, and, of course, our loyal audience members and donors who brought this theatre to “Number 1.” This theatre has certainly come a long way since 1924, but the original commitment to presenting compelling work for the stage has always been and continues to be, the number one priority of the Omaha Community Playhouse.
“The Omaha Community Playhouse isn’t a mere building. It’s the spirit that’s been put into the Playhouse by thousands of volunteers over the years.” ~ Henry Fonda

PERA OMAHA
“•To provide quality opera entertainment through a community-wide organization •To provide an operatic showcase for the promising vocal talent in the region •To be a cultural resource to our community.”
O
PERA OMAHA, the only professional opera company in Nebraska, began in 1958 as the Omaha Civic Opera Society, a volunteer association. With tremendous community support, it became a fully professional opera company by 1970. From the beginning, Opera Omaha was instilled with a spirit of adventure, producing premiere productions at venues all over the city, including Omaha’s historic Orpheum Theater. Opera Omaha is internationally known for productions of eight world premieres and four American premieres of classical masterpieces. Today, Opera Omaha continues to strive for the highest quality in operatic performance to both preserve and advance this important art form.
Opera Omaha’s first production in 2013 is the Midwest premiere of a stunning new production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, designed by Omaha’s world-renowned artist, Jun Kaneko. In April, Opera Omaha presents an epic Bluebeard’s Castle, with the title role performed by one of today’s most celebrated opera singers, Samuel Ramey. Opera is a unique synthesis of music and theatre with a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Collaboration is, by nature, an essential ingredient of opera. Opera Omaha is proud to partner with other arts organizations in the community including the Omaha Symphony, Ballet Nebraska, Film Streams, KANEKO, as well as individual artists working in multiple disciplines. Opera Omaha is highly regarded regionally for an education and outreach program that reaches thousands from elementary school through adulthood. Last season Opera Omaha introduced over 8,000 grade school students to opera with school performances of Hansel and Gretel at the Rose Theater. Ongoing partnerships and collaborations help bring opera to the community with outreach efforts coordinated with schools and organizations such as Girls Inc., Boys and Girls Clubs, the Omaha Public Libraries, Boys Town, and many others.

OPE CENTER FOR KIDS
OOD BANK FOR THE HEARTLAND
“Committed to providing emergency and supplemental food to people in need in Nebraska and western Iowa.”
The mission of the Hope Center for Kids is to faithfully inspire hope in youth and children in Omaha’s inner city through Faith, Education, Employability and Collaboration.
OR OVER 30 YEARS, Food Bank for the Heartland has been feeding the hungry in our community. We distribute food to people in need across 93 counties in Nebraska and western Iowa through our network of over 325 pantries, emergency shelters, after school programs and other nonprofit partners. In addition, we operate our own programs targeting vulnerable populations: BackPack, Food for Seniors, Fresh Produce, Kids Cafe, SNAP and Mobile Pantry. In 2012, the Food Bank distributed nearly 9 million pounds of food, serving over 250,000 different individuals.
HE HOPE CENTER FOR KIDS serves the needs of at-risk, inner city youth by offering year-round afternoon programs including education, employment, nutrition and recreation. Youth and children ages 5-19 years old have a safe, supportive place to be every weekday afternoon until 7 p.m. A nutritious meal, with a multitude of activities and training, are offered nightly. The new Hope Employment and Learning Academy equips youth with the skills necessary to successfully graduate high school and pursue a career. Other programs are offered between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to meet the needs of young men and women ages 19 – 29. More than 1,000 youth and children are served by the Hope Center annually. The Hope Center offers an inspiring, faith-based alternative to the hopelessness of idleness, poverty and crime.
GIVING OPPORTUNITIES: Virtual Food Drive Using the virtual food drive on the Food Bank’s web site, donors select items from the shelves as if purchasing food at the grocery store to donate. As items are scanned at the cash register, they see the multiplying factor of their donated dollars translated into meals for the hungry. Host a Food and Funds Drive Individuals or organizations can collect nonperishable food items and monetary donations. Sponsor a Program Support one or more of our programs that feed vulnerable populations in the community.
GIVING & VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Time for Hope Volunteering your time at the Hope Center will change your life as much as it will the children you are helping! Opportunities such as tutoring, mentoring, employment, coaching and serving meals are an investment that will help us reach more youth in need of Hope. Talent for Hope It takes many talents to ensure success for the hundreds of youth served at the Hope Center. A few key talents needed are leadership skills on our Board of Directors, planning skills on the Hope Center Guild for youth activities and events, and those who have specialized talents with maintenance, cooking and lawn care. Treasure for Hope If you would like to be a part of giving children hope, there are many ways you can help a child. You may make a one-time gift, start a monthly pledge as a part of our Seeds of Hope giving community, attend an event or leave a legacy through a planned gift. Please call the Hope Center or visit our website for more information. Every gift helps change the life of a child.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: The Food Bank could not operate without the support of our volunteers. We can accommodate individuals, families, school groups and companies for a one-time visit or ongoing volunteer experience.
